THE WHACKY BIKERNET WEEKLY NEWS for January 9, 2025

I don’t know what to make of it…

Hey,

As you know, we are rebuilding Bikernet and it’s almost killed us in the process. But there’s hope. I’m working with the museum and the staff didn’t like anything I proposed until it came to our 1st Raffle effort with Danial James art. There’s hope.

Our government is a mess, but there’s hope. I faced a hip replacement but broke a crown, but there’s hope, I hope.

I fired my Knucklehead after a leaky gas tank, and ran into an electrical issue. I solved it, then wasn’t happy with my clutch lever. I solved that and ran into a shifting issue, solved. I’m ready for a road test but it’s snowing.

Bottom line, everything takes work and preparations. We can’t give up on anything, just keep working until it’s right and rolling.

Let’s hit the news.

The News was provided by the Bikernet Team including: Wayfarer, the Redhead, Bob T. Sam Burns, Laura, Barry Green, El Waggs, J.J. Solari, Amy White, Jenn and the rest of the crew.

The Bikernet Weekly News is sponsored in part by companies who also dig Freedom including: Cycle Source Magazine, the MRF, Iron Trader News, ChopperTown, BorntoRide.com and the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum.

NEWS FROM THE WALLS OF ACCURATE ENGINEERING–

Man, I never know what might show up here. I may not have a large motorcycle collection but the Hallowed Walls of Accurate Engineering’s World Headquarters houses a fantastic assortment of motorcycle culture people of all persuasions.

These walls don’t house a bunch of Hobby Lobby stuff. Nope. There is a story behind every doggone piece in this old place. Warms my pea-pickin’ heart, too. This morning, I received a care package full of sentimental goodies from none other than that champion racing legend, Chris Rasile. How stupendous is that?

Magazines with his XR-1000, XR-1200, the Kosman Pro Gas bike (Sweet), and a picture of everyone’s favorite the Fast Lane Cyckes/Cycle Engineering tanker framed dragster. In the famous words of Ron Popiel, “Wait, there’s more”!

I recently was gifted two OHV manifolds for a custom build and the 5-Ball Racing Assalt Weapan Panhead. Well, Chris took note and sent me the 1-inch spacer for those S&S Two Throat manifolds. I’ve been looking for one f-o-r-e-v-e-r.

To top it all off, I am now the recipient of an O-Phishul Fast Lane t-shirt. The magazines will now reside in my Virginia and Jerry Greer Library. The framed picture will hang with the likes of Elmer Trett, Warner Riley, Jay Springsteen, Joe Smith, Glen Kerr, T.C Christenson, and many others to keep him company. The t-shirt will hang from the Hallowed Rafters next to Charlie Hausler ‘s Fried Rice.

Yes, I wear them on special occasions but because most are signed I don’t wash’em. Thank you so very much, Chris. I love these treasures. Fan For Life. Much Love my friend.

LANE SPLITTING FREEDOM RULES–
Lane Filtering on a motorcycle is now legal in France

Filtering through a traffic jam on a motorcycle has finally become legal in France. After 26 years of fierce fighting this already well-established practice is recognized. French motorcyclists’ organization FFMC – a member of FEMA – calls it ‘A major step forward that marks a decisive step in road sharing and user safety’. Legalization means regulation.

The legalization of filtering is accompanied by precise rules, defined by decree, to guarantee safe and supervised practice. Here are the main points to remember:

  • Filtering is allowed for drivers of motorcycles (category L3e) and motorized tricycles (category L5e) with a maximum width of 1 meter.
  • It is allowed on motorways and dual carriageways separated by a central reservation with at least two lanes in each direction.
  • It is allowed in the event of dense traffic on roads with uninterrupted lines.
  • When the speed of other vehicles is limited to 50 km/h maximum, with sufficient space between vehicles, on a clear road (no roadworks, snow or ice) and respecting specific speed limits:
    • – 50 km/h maximum if traffic is moving forward,
    • 30 km/h maximum if traffic is stationary,
  • with the prohibition of overtaking another filtering motorcycle.
  • When traffic flows again, re-join traffic without delay.

Penalties for non-compliance:

  • 4th class fine (€135).
  • Suspension of license for up to three years (with possible limitation to non-professional journeys).
  • Loss of 3 points on the license.
  • A well-deserved victory

FFMC said: “This major step forward is the result of collective work carried out with perseverance by the FFMC, with the FFM and Mobilians for 26 years. If the official recognition of filtering is above all a victory for road users, it is also a recognition of the long-term work carried out by the FFMC.

We have demonstrated, year after year, that filtering can be synonymous with fluidity and security, provided that it is well supervised. This decree marks the triumph of dialogue and pedagogy over prejudices and misunderstandings. FFMC does not intend to stop there. This legalization is a foundation on which we will continue to build a safer and more shared road for all users. Motorcyclists, motorists and cyclists, together, we are moving towards a future where common sense and sharing the road make sense.”

100 WORD FICTION RETURNS–New City by Wayfarer

Like waking up from a hangover, his head throbbed at the novelty and strange visuals on the road and roadside. He liked the pretty women, though, not so much how they ignored him and his loud pipes. He went in behind a couple of youngsters through double-swinging doors. He sat at the counter and ordered a shot of rum.

The man at the counter panicked, then looked around, then said, “Monsieur, isss café. Only cafés.”

He almost hit the kid snickering behind him, but then remembered, “I have a motorcycle–these pricks have miniature cars the size of my commode.”

OIL IMPROVED LIFE ON EARTH 101–On January 10, 1901, a drilling derrick at Spindletop Hill near Beaumont, Texas, produces an enormous gusher of crude oil, coating the landscape for hundreds of feet and signalling the advent of the American oil industry.

The geyser was discovered at a depth of over 1,000 feet, flowed at an initial rate of approximately 100,000 barrels a day and took nine days to cap. Following the discovery, petroleum, which until that time had been used in the U.S. primarily as a lubricant and in kerosene for lamps, would become the main fuel source for new inventions such as cars and airplanes; coal-powered forms of transportation including ships and trains would also convert to the liquid fuel.

Crude oil, which became the world’s first trillion-dollar industry, is a natural mix of hundreds of different hydrocarbon compounds trapped in underground rock. The hydrocarbons were formed millions of years ago when tiny aquatic plants and animals died and settled on the bottoms of ancient waterways, creating a thick layer of organic material. Sediment later covered this material, putting heat and pressure on it and transforming it into the petroleum that comes out of the ground today.

In the early 1890s, Texas businessman and amateur geologist Patillo Higgins became convinced there was a large pool of oil under a salt-dome formation south of Beaumont. He and several partners established the Gladys City Oil, Gas and Manufacturing Company and made several unsuccessful drilling attempts before Higgins left the company. In 1899, Higgins leased a tract of land at Spindletop to mining engineer Anthony Lucas. The Lucas gusher blew on January 10, 1901, and ushered in the liquid fuel age. Unfortunately for Higgins, he’d lost his ownership stake by that point.

Beaumont became a “black gold” boomtown, its population tripling in three months. The town filled up with oil workers, investors, merchants and con men (leading some people to dub it “Swindletop”). Within a year, there were more than 285 active wells at Spindletop and an estimated 500 oil and land companies operating in the area, including some that are major players today: Humble (now Exxon), the Texas Company (Texaco) and Magnolia Petroleum Company (Mobil).

Spindletop experienced a second boom starting in the mid-1920s when more oil was discovered at deeper depths. In the 1950s, Spindletop was mined for sulphur. Today, only a few oil wells still operate in the area.

CARDO LAUNCHES ‘Your Ride– Your Recharge.’ Campaign,
Championing the Mental Health Benefits of Motorcycling

Cardo’s new cause-marketing initiative encourages motorcyclists to boost their “happiness batteries” while staying connected through cutting-edge communication devices.

Cardo Systems, the global market leader in wireless communication systems for powersports riders, today launched the ‘Your Ride. Your Recharge.’ campaign. This new cause-marketing initiative encourages riders to prioritize recharging their mental and emotional health, while also supporting the Motorcycle Relief Program—a nonprofit dedicated to helping veterans and first responders cope with PTSD and stress through therapeutic motorcycle adventures.

Additionally, the campaign emphasizes keeping communication devices ready for the road.

As part of its commitment to the riding community, Cardo is supporting The Motorcycle Relief Project (MRP) with a $10,000 donation and 10 PACKTALK EDGE devices. Based in the United States, MRP helps veterans and first responders heal from trauma through therapeutic motorcycle rides. The organization’s mission is to honor and encourage military veterans and first responders by providing recreational ADV motorcycling experiences that offer relief from life’s struggles and the challenges of reintegration.

“Motorcycle Relief Project relies on effective communication between our volunteers during Relief Rides, which is why we choose Cardo devices,” said Mike Bobbitt, President of MRP. “With Cardo, our lead rider, chase vehicle, and sweep can stay always connected, ensuring a seamless and safe experience for participants. This technology is vital for monitoring rider progress and adapting the day’s plan as needed. Thank you, Cardo, for supporting our mission.”

NEW AT THE STURGIS MOTORCYCLE MUSEUM–

The 1950 Triumph Thunderbird marked the debut of the iconic Thunderbird line and was the first 650cc model, kicking off a legacy that endured until Triumph’s closure in 1983.

Legend has it that Edward Turner, the visionary engineer behind the bike, named it after a U.S. motel he visited on a business trip. Known for his flair for style and color, Turner boosted Triumph’s sales as early as 1935 with his design innovations.

For the Thunderbird, Turner chose a unique blue-gray shade called “Thunder Blue,” though it turned out to be less popular than expected.

QUICK, BEFORE IT’S TOO LATE, OPEN THE BANDIT’S CANTINA BAD JOKE LIBRARY–

I have been in many places, but I’ve never been in Cahoots.

Apparently, you can’t go alone. You have to be in Cahoots with someone.

I’ve also never been in Cognito.

I hear no one recognizes you there.

I have, however, been in Sane. They don’t have an airport; you have to be driven there.

I have made several trips there, thanks to my children, friends, family and work.

I would like to go to Conclusions, but you have to jump, and I’m not too much on physical activity anymore.

I have also been in Doubt. That is a sad place to go, and I try not to visit there too often.

I’ve been in Flexible, but only when it was very important to stand firm. (Refused trip to Gimmies)

Sometimes I’m in Capable, and I go there more often as I’m getting older.

One of my favorite places to be is in Suspense!  It really gets the adrenaline flowing and pumps up the old heart! At my age I need all the stimuli I can get!

I may have been in Continent, but I don’t remember what country I was in. It’s an age thing. They tell me it is very wet and damp there.

Life is too short for negative drama and petty things. So, laugh insanely, love truly and forgive quickly.

WHAT’S HAPPENING WITH THE 85TH STURGIS RALLY—

Find out here. The 85th Sturgis Rally set for Aug. 1-10, 2025 is potentially going to be the largest rally yet, however, some wonder how the Sturgis City government’s recent unrest, budget cuts, and unprecedented turnover will affect the 85th Rally.

It won’t.

Why?

Black Hills area businesses are at the helm, as they always have been.

“What’s great about the Sturgis Rally is that no single entity owns it,” said Randy Peterson, owner of Sturgis.com, the original go-to source on everything Sturgis Rally. “It’s not a government-run event. It’s put together by individual businesses, clubs and communities all around the Black Hills. Each entity puts on their own rally experience to cater to our visitors, and they handle their own planning, staffing and events. The Sturgis government is struggling right now, but the rally won’t.”

FREEDOM OF CHOICE CHALLENGES GOING FORWARD–

The changing landscape in Washington, D.C., will have a trickle-down impact on policies and regulations state governments implement. One area where we will likely see friction between the federal government and state governments will center on electric vehicles and the survival of the internal combustion engine.

A flash point in this area will be how and if states decide to link their policies to those enacted by the state of California. A recent story out of Oregon caught our attention and should serve as a warning about what may be coming down the road.

Daimler Truck North America (DTNA) announced it is pausing sales of internal combustion engines in Oregon. In their press release, DTNA cited uncertainty around Oregon’s Advanced Clean Truck rule.

What’s troubling about the move is that DTNA is doing so because they believe Oregon is implementing parts of the new rule differently than how California has proceeded. This is important because federal law allows states like Oregon to copy California’s emissions rules. Yet, in this case, Oregon appears to be making its own emissions policies.

All those committed to preserving the internal combustion engine should understand how state and federal laws are evolving. If states like Oregon can create mandates, we could see an expanding battleground. A patchwork of laws and rules would create problems and confusion for manufacturers and consumers.

The fight to allow consumers options regarding their engine choice is heating up. The Motorcycle Riders Foundation is engaged in this fight in D.C. and you must remain active back home.

IMA MEETS OUTSIDE EXPO SHOW–

I am pleased to invite you to a legislative update in Las Vegas in February, courtesy of the Independent Motorcycle Aftermarket (IMA).

With over five decades working in and dedicated to the motorcycle aftermarket I am proud to lead the fight to protect our right to repair and modify motorcycles, preserve our options to choose internal combustion engines as our power source and ensure that proper fuels are available to riders.

While many have recently become aware of dangers to the growth and longevity of our industry, the IMA has been working our ground game for over two years and we are ready to introduce legislation.

I’ll be conducting the legislative update along with our lobbyist detailing who, what and how we may all be affected by pending laws restricting motorsports and those that can protect our interests. We will take your questions, as well. I look forward to meeting you and addressing any concerns you may have.

NEW VA RESOLUTION–

Please add your support for H.R. 210, the Dental Care for Veterans Act. This bill would require the Secretary of the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to furnish dental care in the same manner as any other medical service and defines a 4-year implementation plan beginning with veterans in Priority Groups 1 and 2.

Currently, the VA only provides full dental care services to a limited number of veterans enrolled in its health care system, which includes those who have a service-connected dental disability, are 100% service disabled and those receiving Total Disability for Individual Unemployability (TDIU).

In total, only about 500,000 of the 9 million veteran enrollees in the VA health care system have eligibility for dental care.

Studies show that poor dental hygiene can lead to a number of chronic health conditions, including infections from decaying and dying teeth, which can be life-threatening if not treated.

Dental care has been proven to be an important part of overall health care. VA is considered a comprehensive health care system for veterans and the lack of basic dental care is a major gap in the whole health model VA care subscribes to.

This legislation is consistent with DAV Resolution No. 41, which calls for the provision of comprehensive dental care to all service-disabled veterans within the VA health care system. Therefore, DAV strongly supports this bill.

Please contact your Federal Elected Officials and ask them to support this bill.

EUROPE’S ENERGY DEBACLE–Is a Warning for U.S.

By Vijay Jayaraj

When it comes to global energy policy, few narratives are as instructive — and as cautionary — as Europe’s.

Why?

Their ill-fated experiment with wind and solar energy.

The continent’s self-inflicted woes contain lessons that should be taken to heart by those formulating U.S. energy strategy for the incoming administration.

Europe’s Misplaced Trust in Wind and Solar

Europe’s embrace of weather-dependent power generation, particularly in Germany and the United Kingdom, was a profound miscalculation.

These nations embarked on an ambitious energy transformation, predicated on the assumption that wind and solar could replace traditional fossil fuels. The result has been a catastrophe, as predicted by many.

Germany, often celebrated as the champion of “renewable” energy, should be crowned king of incompetence.

The country’s heavy investment in wind and solar has not only failed to deliver promised reductions of carbon dioxide emissions — the bogeyman of climate alarmists — but also has destabilized its once robust industrial economy.

Germany’s manufacturing sector — historically, the economic powerhouse of Europe — has been brought to its knees, with energy costs rendering many industrial processes economically unviable.

Reporting on prices in the second week of December, Robert Bryce says that “Germany’s wholesale power market came close to $1,000 per megawatt-hour, the highest level in 18 years.”

The fundamental problem lies in the inherent unpredictability of renewable sources.

Wind power demonstrates acute vulnerabilities during critical periods.

Winter presents a perfect storm of challenges: Reduced wind generation coincides with peak energy demand, creating grid instability, and heightened risk of blackouts.

Additionally, so-called renewables are unreliable and expensive despite claims to the contrary.

The Myth of Levelized Cost of Energy

Policymakers and renewable energy advocates have long relied on Levelized Cost of Energy (LCOE) as the primary metric for comparing energy sources.

However, this misleading construct benefits only hucksters.

LCOE fails to account for the massive infrastructure investments, backup generation requirements and costs for grid stabilization associated with intermittent sources.

These make the true cost of wind and solar much higher than the advertised price and destructive to the economics of businesses and households.

“What we have in Europe is a disintegrating electric grid deliberately created by politicians who want to be seen as green as an emerald,” says Thomas Shepstone, a U.S. observer of energy markets.

“They have delivered, what can only be described as a green slime that threatens to engulf and smother them all.

“Electric prices are out of control, blackouts are approaching and yet, the ideologues want to press even harder.”

U.S. Must Avoid the European Disaster

The European experiment offers a clear warning: Ideological aspirations — especially like the “green” transition rooted in fevered ravings about a supposed climate crisis — must never supersede technological and economic realities.

The United States has an opportunity to chart a more responsible, pragmatic course — one that balances economic necessities and energy security with innovative technologies:

Natural gas, made plentiful through hydraulic fracturing, already has not only lowered electricity prices but also provided a competitive edge to energy-intensive industries like chemicals, steel, and manufacturing.

Highly vilified coal should be allowed to make a comeback with currently available technology — like that being used in Japan and elsewhere — to reduce emissions to harmless levels.

Nuclear power appears to be on the rise.

Policy Recommendations

  • To avoid replicating Europe’s mistakes, some things the United States should do are:
  • Prioritize reliability and affordability in promoting energy sources.
  • Encourage investment in grid resilience and away from wind and solar, especially in regions with harsh winters.
  • Use realistic metrics for assessing energy costs.
  • Make industrial competitiveness a primary consideration in developing energy policy.

The likelihood of the U.S. pursuing this line of thought is much enhanced by the election of Donald J. Trump, as the nation’s 47th commander in chief; although this matter is too important to take anything for granted.

IT GOT SORTA CRAZY AROUND THE NEIGHBORHOOD–

Well, was the news wild or what. Back to Museum projects tomorrow. We will share them all in the near future.

Hell, it don’t know what might happen next, but I’m trying to get ready.
