Well, now the holidays are over and I’ve caught up on all the other winter projects, sold the convertible, and put up enough copy to keep Bikernet readers happy for at least another week, it’s time to get back into the rigid project.
Although the engine from Custom Chrome came with an ignition system, I wanted an upgrade. With all due respect to our sponsors, it just wasn’t up to par for me on this one. Instead, we’ve procured another Custom Chrome product – a Crane Fireball Single Fire Ignition System.
A couple of major components needed to be set up for this system. The timing module, the coils and basketry, and a set of plug wires.
A hint about ignition systems. Before you buy, you are best off to call the factory, or a dealer and find out what type of coils and wires you will need. Unfortunately, many times the warehouses do NOT have this information in the catalog. This can cost you a bit in returns if you get a coil or wire setup that isn’t impedance matched to your system.
First, we obtained a dual coil bracket from Custom Chrome to mount in the center of the bike. Although this one camewith a key switch and starter button assembly, I’ve got alternate switches and buttons to use – so one of the holeswill be used for the choke as seen near the top of the assembly.
For this project, 2-3 Ohm coils are recommended. We started by wiring up the coils with some 14 gauge wire toget power from the key switch to the coils, and from the coil negatives to the ignition module. A soldering iron andheat gun will be required tools for this project.
Once the coils have been wired, they are fit into place on the bracket. Now, we’re on to the pickup and ignition module.
