Everything today is time sensitive. Hell, if you buy a coffee maker, it has a time sensitive carbon filter, that must be replace on time or… Then there’s every political pitch you receive on your phone or in your email. I’m concerned the funds never reach the candidate.
Of course, there’s climate doom and if we don’t fix everything on time, we’re doomed. I just started to read a college presentation by Alex Epstein. We are very fortunate to have him. So, a student at Gettysburg College asked him about Bill McKibben’s book Economy Class. It’s a book about all the negative side effects of Fossil Fuels from an economic perspective. Of course, this book is all about doom.
Alex pointed-out the major flaw in Bill’s book. It doesn’t cover the positive side effects of using fossil fuels, which are massive. The fact that he only covers one side of the issue, basically throws his book out the window.

Culminating 18 months of planning and fulfilment, the MRF ended Meeting of the Minds 2022 by reviewing input from over three hundred attendees.

Bikers inside the Beltway 2023 was a total success because of the work the MRF does at the Meeting of the Minds addressing the needs of members and our partner SMROs. The feedback we received from MOTM 2022 put us on track with new workshops, more workshops, and new presenters with topical presentations.
This year, we added four workshops for a total of sixteen! Although some workshops are updates of annual presentations, we’ve added ten new presenters and a slew of new topics.

LIVEWIRE RESULTS DOWN—
With 63 units sold globally for Q1, LiveWire ONE electric motorcycles sales were off 13% and consolidated revenue was reported to be down 25% year-over-year.
Electric Motorcycles revenue was down 36% in the first quarter, due to lower unit sales of LiveWire ONE units and the inclusion of Harley-Davidson LiveWire units in Q1 2022 prior to the accounting carve-out.

STACYC’s operating loss for the first quarter was negative $0.1 million versus operating income of $1.0 million a year ago, driven by lower volumes.
First Quarter 2023 Business Highlights:

• Continued development of the Del Mar platform during the quarter to ready Del Mar for production ramp-up with first deliveries targeted for Q3 2023.

Iconic Design, Redefined

Pinnacle Performance
The new 121-cubic inch V-Twin Milwaukee-Eight VVT 121 engine establishes a new benchmark for factory-installed torque and displacement available in a Harley-Davidson Touring motorcycle and features optimized liquid-cooled cylinder heads with a new cooling system, variable valve timing (VVT), a new intake tract and performance exhaust system.
Dry weight has been reduced significantly – by 31 pounds for the CVO Street Glide model and by 35 pounds for the CVO Road Glide model – compared to the models they replace.
High-performance front and rear SHOWA suspension components promote confident handling and provide a dramatic improvement in rider comfort compared to previous CVO models, with rear suspension travel increased by 50 percent. Premium Brembo braking components offer outstanding braking feel and performance for added rider confidence.
For the first time the CVO Street Glide and CVO Road Glide models offer selectable Ride Modes – Road, Sport and Rain – that electronically control a specific combination of power delivery, engine braking, Cornering-Antilock Braking System (C-ABS) and Cornering-Traction Control System (C-TCS) settings.

BIKERNET BOOK OF THE WEEK CLUB–Publisher: Veloce

An in-depth engineering analysis of the twin-cylinder motorcycles produced by Veloce Ltd: the Roarer, the Model O and the LE. The book looks at the design features that are common to all three twins, as well as the design influences of the LE.
Although development of the LE was flawed, the honesty and ingenuity of the design is duly recognized.
The Veloce company is well regarded for producing some of the best single-cylinder motorcycles in race form and for private use.
It is not so well-known that Veloce Ltd also produced some twin-cylinder machines: the Roarer, for racing, and the Model O for production. These bikes had many engineering features in common, such as twin contra-rotating crank shafts, inline cranks, shaft drive, and swing arm rear suspension.
The supercharged Roarer was never raced because of the advent of war; this also put paid to the development of the Model O, which would have been the first so-called “Superbike.”
After the war, the Goodman family, owners of Veloce Ltd, focused on the production of a “Motorcycle for Everyman” – an idea that had featured in their production bikes since the formation of the company. They drew on the ideas embodied in the Roarer and the Model O to produce the twin cylinder LE range of motorcycles. These, however, were not well received by the motorcycling public, and many blame the production of the LE for the eventual demise of the company.
The purpose of the book is to present, from an engineering perspective, an analysis of the Roarer and the Model O, comparing and contrasting the methods adopted by their designers to meet the different design specifications of these bikes, and to illustrate how the ideas developed in this exercise appeared in the LE range of motorcycles.
The authors, Brian Agnew and Ivan Rhodes, met in the 1960s when Brian worked at Rolls-Royce Derby. They spent their weekends tinkering with motorcycles, and both have an intimate knowledge of the Velocette twins both from their time spent together and from their personal projects.

Dewey Simms’ 1919 Indian Daytona “Big Valve” Single
Authentic documents show that dirt track racer Dewey Simms created this bike using a mid-‘teens frame and a 1919 Indian Daytona V-Twin engine. But he blocked off one cylinder so the bike could compete with other 30.50 machines, 500cc bikes. In the photos at the end of this story you can compare the engine in this racer to the standard V-Twin Daytona Racers in the Board Track Racing display at the Museum.
Factory competition was fierce and expensive in this pre-Class C era.
As long as the machine was of the class displacement anything could be raced, hand built or serial production. Using a state of the art Daytona side-valve engine, Simms assembled a dropped factory racing handle bar, narrow unsprung race forks, a ‘teens frame and wheels and built a competitive machine.
The full loop style frame lowers the engine and rider for better handling. Controls include spark advance and compression release, both controlled via the twist-grips, also a throttle and a kill switch. Racing carburetor design made engines work best wide open.
The rider had to work the pump on the oil tank every so often to send a charge of lubricant to the main bearings. As with this machine, racing machines of the era ran power through a “jack-shaft” which allowed for some gear reduction.
Rider accommodations were minimal; the seat is not sprung and fork and frame are a rigid design. No brakes were allowed on dirt and board track bikes until the 1960’s by F.A.M. and later, AMA rules.
This storied Indian racer is on loan from Dave Ohrt of Iowa. It is currently displayed as part of the Early American Transportation INNOVATION exhibition featuring numerous rare early motorcycles, bicycles and cycle cars plus the 1911 Steco bi-plane.

TENNESSEE GOVERNOR SIGNS EXHAUST NOISE BILL INTO LAW–
Win in Tennessee! Governor Bill Lee signed into law SAN-supported legislation (S.B. 434) to reform the state’s motor vehicle noise laws.
Based on SEMA’s model legislation, S.B. 434 would now implement a fair and objective method for determining compliance with the law, replacing a system that relies on subjective judgments on whether an exhaust system is too loud.

NEBRASKA HELMET LAW REPEAL–Let Those Who Ride Decide – State #33
On June 1st, Nebraska governor Jim Pillen signed into law a motorcycle helmet modification bill, which allows riders to choose if they wear a helmet. Congratulations to the motorcyclists in Nebraska, ABATE of Nebraska and all the groups in Nebraska who for years fought to have helmet choice in the Cornhusker State.
Nebraska State Senator Ben Hansen originally introduced the language, which was included in a larger transportation bill that passed the legislature at the end of May. Effective January 1, 2024, an individual age 21 and older, who has completed a certified motorcycle safety course may now choose whether or not to wear a helmet, provided the rider uses protective eye equipment.
In 2020, Missouri passed a helmet choice bill leaving Nebraska as the sole state in the Midwest that required all riders to wear a helmet. With this new law, Nebraska now joins its neighboring states and becomes the 33rd state allowing helmet choice.
For 34 years riders in Nebraska have sought the freedom to decide whether to wear a helmet. This victory is a testament to the handiwork, determination and passion of all those involved. The Motorcycle Riders Foundation (MRF) has long championed the belief that “those who ride should decide.”
When hearing the news, MRF President, Kirk “Hardtail” Willard said, “Grass roots activism at its finest, it is encouraging to see that there are still politicians and bureaucrats in this great country of ours that bend to common sense and the will of the people. Given the nanny state of our society today, it is an outstanding achievement by ABATE of Nebraska and other involved motorcyclists in earning their freedom of choice.”
This message from “Rouge,” State Coordinator for ABATE of Nebraska, Todd C. Miller should inspire us all. “It is hard to explain what this bill means to me. I was mentored and encouraged by so many. I am turning 60 and had the privilege to ride in this state prior to the mandatory helmet law enacted in 1989.
“Over the years, I have lost many friends, colleagues, brothers and freedom fighters who were on the frontlines of this fight. It is hard to encourage a group of young riders that have never ridden free in Nebraska, for us, that was anyone under the age of 50!
“So, in honor of all of those we have lost, I am very proud to say the next generation of riders will know what it means to ride free in this state. I pray they make memories, enjoy the ride here in Nebraska and become emboldened with the same desire I, and so many others, had to defend our rights in the years to come. We all know the fight is NOT over.
“I would like to Honor my Board of Directors/State Officers both past and present for sticking with the plan… and making it happen. My legislative officers over the years who helped keep us focused and get us there one step at a time, including Charles Thomas, Scott Lucey, Gary Neeman and my current Legislative Representative Randy Geer. SEMA Pickup Report
It’s no secret that American’s love pickup trucks but did you know that In the United States, pickups, SUVs, and crossover CUVs constitute over 50% of all vehicles on the road? Based on projections in the latest edition of “SEMA Future Trends,” it’s anticipated that by 2027, the light-truck segment – encompassing pickups, vans, SUVs, and CUVs – will represent approximately 80% of all new-vehicle sales. In this projection, pickups alone are expected to account for close to half of all new vehicles sold!
Healthy truck and SUV sales generally augur well for the automotive aftermarket. Parts and accessories for pickups alone account for 31% of specialty equipment sales, according to the latest “SEMA Pickup Accessorization Report,” with $16 billion in annual sales. Throw in SUVs, crossovers and vans, and that sales number grows to more than $30 billion yearly…

RIGHTS OF THE PEOPLE and Communist idiocy—
The ruling Communist Government in the State of Kerala (India) believes more than two people are safe on a two-wheeler, including children.
Editor’s Note: India is a unique democracy where communist parties are also given freedom to contest elections and become lawful representatives of the citizens if they win. That’s “too much democracy” for Western nations but the incredibly liberal constitution of India allows it.
The so-called most literate State of Kerala needs to be educated that two-wheelers are not designed to carry more than two people.
Not prudent to allow more than two persons on two-wheelers: Centre
This response comes even as the ruling LDF government in Kerala was mulling whether to approach the Centre to amend the Motor Vehicles Act to a limited extent for permitting one child to travel with parents on a two-wheeler as being demanded by many in the southern state.
The Centre has made it clear that it was “not prudent” to allow a third person to travel on a two-wheeler as the same was prohibited under the law and motorcycles or scooters were universally designed to carry only two people.
This was Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari’s response to a plea by CPI(M) MP Elamaram Kareem requesting that children up to the age of 10 years be allowed to travel as a third person on two-wheelers on following necessary safety measures, like wearing helmets.

She called during rush hour in Phoenix. Hot enough to melt asphalt, Mudd straddled his Dyna and slid into traffic.
Had to get to his pregnant girl on time. Only one thing to do, twist his throttle to the stops. Lane splitting still wasn’t legal.
Mud didn’t care, as he tore between frustrated, honking drivers. Taking out a sideview mirror, he nearly went down. Police sirens blared. Angry motorists cut him off. An accident ahead stopped all movement. He kept his throttle pegged as he darted the onto Highway winding into Scottsdale. He squinted against the glare, braked, screamed, screeched but slid into the hospital parking lot on time.

FIRST QUARTER MOTORCYCLE SALES OFF—
The Motorcycle Industry Council announces the Q1 numbers are in. Most market segments are off the Q1 2022 pandemic bubble record highs, but still trending well ahead of the 2020 mark. Total On-Highway motorcycle sales in Q1 were 64,940 units, down -7.4%. Scooter sales took the biggest hit down nearly 43%. However there were a couple bright spots.
The newly reported Dual Sport/ADV segment was up +7.9% (18,703 units). Traditional Off-Highway motorcycle sales were also up +6.5% (38,561 units). This is certainly good news to John Hinz, CEO of KTM North America, Inc., and newly elected MIC vice chair. He believes knowledge is power and there is real value in data.

XDA Racers Power to Record Performances at VMP—
The XDA’s 37th Annual MTC Engineering Summer Nationals delivered record performances and a flawless event to Virginia Motorsports Park again.
The biggest and best show in motorcycle drag racing gave the east coast an action-packed event under cooler-than-normal skies that allowed the performance numbers to outshine the glassy surface of the VMP 1320.
The rider talent and tuning in Orient Express Racing Pro Street reached a new level turning out the quickest field in history! With twenty-two entries, Jason Dunigan earned the number one qualifying spot with a 6.430 at 230.80 mph, while Jordan Angelo held the sixteenth position with a 6.815 at 211.06 mph, the quickest bump spot in history. With an all-six-second field, the competition on Sunday was set to be phenomenal, with a forecast in the mid 70’s.
During qualifying, Aruba’s Jayson Geerman with Team DME ran his personal best of 6.755 to move him into the top forties of the Orient Express Pro Street GOAT list. Geerman lined up next to Williford twice during qualifying and outran him both times. But that would prove to be a big mistake as Geerman drew Williford in round one of competition. Overnight, Williford turned his program around and ended Geerman’s weekend with his best run of the weekend at 6.428.
Brandon Litten also improved his personal best performance in qualifying, running a 6.613, and he would continue his decent on the GOAT list into eliminations with a 6.580 run in round one eliminations and a win against James Waugh. Litten would, unfortunately, be taken out in round two by Jason Dunigan with a 6.638 run.
Mark Renduluk with Team DME also made strides in his second outing in Pro Street when he lowered his ET to 6.533 during qualifying. He then became the fourteenth rider ever to enter the 6.40’s when he ran a 6.484 at 229.04 against Darion Payne in round two of eliminations. He improved that time in the semi-finals with a 6.473; however, that ET would be no match for Williford who ran 6.459 to advance to another final round.
Jason Dunigan and Rodney Williford are no strangers to each other in a final round. The last time these two met was last November at the Haltech World Cup Finals where Dunigan took his first win over Williford.
As the bulbs flashed, both bikes shot out like rockets, and you knew right away it would be a great race. Williford’s Hayabusa was out in front of Dunigan easily, but Dunigan was gaining on him, and by the finish line, Dunigan’s front wheel had caught up with Williford’s rear wheel. It was an incredibly close race, with Williford winning, running a 6.448 to Dunigan’s 6.457.
Williford remains undefeated this season at XDA…. for now.
DME Racing Real Street was a slugfest among former-class champions. David Stewart reset the records to a 7.435 at 198.47 mph in the first round of eliminations. Tech Inspector Will King tore his bike down to the studs and deemed him officially legal, earning him ten additional points.
Stewart would face 2021 champion Mark Hylton in round two and take a loss on a hole shot despite running a quicker 7.472 to Hylton’s 7.495 with a .007 reaction time.
Hylton would then take out David Fondon in the semi-finals with a 7.516. Hylton suffered motor damage during Saturday’s qualifying session. Still, his team stayed up past 2 am getting his Hayabusa back up and running to compete on Sunday, so heading to a final was satisfaction for Hylton and his team.
On the other side of the ladder, 2018 Champion Spencer Claycomb took a first-round win over George Cross. Cross ran a personal this best over the weekend with a 7.920 during qualifying and is already planning some upgrades to sharpen his program before the WPGC Bike Fest at Maryland International Raceway in July.
Claycomb went on to win against Anibal Merced and Rickey Gadson before getting to his first final since June of 2021.
In the final, Hylton looked to be the favorite for the win with his quicker ET’s during eliminations compared to Claycomb. But as the pair rolled up the starting line, Hylton had a problem, and XDA Starter Mikey had to start a countdown for a timeout.
Hylton’s team rectified the situation, and he rolled into the pre-stage beam with seconds to spare. The bulbs dropped, and Hylton cut a .059 light on Claycomb’s .096 but the advantage was short-lived as Hylton’s bike lost power at the 330′, and Claycomb flew past him to take the win!
Tommy Saxon led the MaxxECU Pro Xtreme class of eight riders qualifying with a 4.042. Saxon, John Collins and Dale Leeks took easy first-round wins when their competition suffered catastrophic failure during qualifying, keeping them from making the first round. Points leader Chris Cutsinger won over no-bar bike racer Chris Theodoridis.
In the semi-final, Saxon won over Dale Leeks with a 4.096 to a 4.168 and John Collins took out points leader with a hole-shot win with a .055 reaction time and 4.148 to Cutsinger’s .088 reaction and 4.125 ET.
Collins would gain the starting line advantage in the final with a .031 light to Saxon’s .054. Collins had the total package running 4.000 to the eighth mile at 184.62 to Saxon’s slower 4.044 ET.
MaxxECU Pro Xtreme is presented by Billy Vose Racing, Fast by Gast, Dunigan Racing, DME Racing, Grothus Dragbikes, Harley Haul, Rob Bush Motorsports, Robinson Industries, Schnitz Racing, Timblin Chassis, and Worldwide Bearings.
Curtis McDougald dominated HTP Performance Super Stock, qualifying number one with an 8.858 and making it to the final round. There he found Mike Davis, who desperately needs a wedding dress. In 2021 Davis made it to two finals that resulted in runner-up finishes. In 2022
Davis made it to four final rounds, leaving him a bridesmaid again with all runner-up finishes. Davis needs a win this season. Unfortunately, it would not be this past week as he went red at the tree with a -.017 to give the victory to the 2022 class champion Curtis McDougald.
Craig Edwards debuted in the turbo power-adder class of Boosted Bulls aboard ’99 Problems’. He left round one with 100 problems as Malcolm Phillips on ‘Billy Mays’ easily dispatched him out of competition. Craig Elliot on ‘Cotton Mouth’ left Geoff Godfrey on ‘Minion at the tree as he took off for the eighth-mile finish line. Godfrey couldn’t catch up, and Elliot would face Phillips in the final.
In the final Elliot would once again grab the starting line advantage; luckily for Phillips, his bike was tuned to catch up and power past Elliot to take ‘Billy Mays’ to its second consecutive win in the season.
APE Nitrous Bulls had stacks on stacks in play during round two of eliminations when Malcolm Phillips on ‘Strip Tease’ went up against Lavar Delee on ‘High Roller’. Delee forgot to have someone blow on his dice and had no luck keeping his front wheel down as Phillips powered on past him for the payday and the advancement to the finals.
Teasley on ‘Unhinged’ took out ‘Mister Jay’ piloted by Ronald Benjamin in round one. He then broke the beams in round two of eliminations with an earned bye to give him an easy path to the final. In the final, Teasley had no problems keeping ‘Unhinged’ under control as he left Phillips’ newly fat pockets at the starting line to rocket to the win.
Michael Thyen on ‘The Prisoner’ was on a winning spree at other events, but Josh Eubanks on ‘Belmont’ ended his good time when he took him out of action in round two. Eubanks went on to win against Ken Alston on ‘Leather Face’ and advanced to the final.
Mike Burkhart on ‘Atilla’ took wins over David Page on ‘Pickin Pockets’ and Brandon Tyree on ‘Made Man’ to line up against Eubanks in the final. Eubanks had problems with the throttle and leaves before the tree was activated to give the win to Burkhart.
Brandon Litten made a statement this past weekend in Tommie’s Motorsports DMV Bulls when the seventeen-year-old took ‘Butch Cassidy’ to a final after defeating Mark Blake on ‘Bounty Hunter, Alex Kupetz on ‘Money Business’ and Cody Lowe on ‘Plan B’ to land in the final opposite of Jeremy Teasley.
Teasley brought Rock Sanders on ‘Geronimo’, Derek Sobiech on ‘Night Stalker’ and Aubrey Valentine on ‘Stunna’ to the hall of the slain before his final stop at the finals.
Litten got the jump on Teasley at the tree, but Teasley quickly caught him and cut him down on ‘Valhalla’ to take his second win of the night.

The Man Who Invented the Trillion-Dollar Coin
An Atlanta lawyer was just spit-balling on a financial blog. He didn’t expect Washington to listen.
About a dozen years ago, a pseudonymous commenter on a financial website, writing under the name Beowulf, presented an unusual solution for a debt-ceiling standoff: If the federal government was at risk of default, and Congress couldn’t agree to either cut spending or raise the borrowing limit cleanly, couldn’t it simply mint a trillion-dollar coin?
“Congress screwed up,” Beowulf wrote. By passing the law, it had given the president the authority to direct the secretary of the Treasury to mint a coin of any value — say, $1 trillion — and deposit it in the Federal Reserve, which would be legally obligated to accept it.
Ultimately, the coin’s deposit would result in $1 trillion in government revenue or, with a coin of a different denomination, however much was needed to continue to pay its bills and avoid a default. “The catch is, it’s gotta be made of platinum,” Beowulf wrote. “Ditto the balls of any president who tried this.”
Minting the coin, in a strict sense, would cost a trillion dollars. What will be the cost, Mucha might argue, of not minting it?

That off my chest — I’m waiting on my Paul Cox primary drive to align the Knucklehead and perform final alignment with Irish Rich.
Speaking of Irish Rich and Shamrocks Customs. He’s building a very cool blacked out chopper. “But it’s a variety of black textures,” Rich barked at me. The frame is gloss black powder, whereas some elements are textured black powder and some are heated wrinkle-black.
I fixed Vickie’s clutch hub, with the broken bolt in the hub. Rich and I will grab Mike’s R.I.P. last year Shovelhead and re-install the primary, drive and clutch. We will the return the running Shovel to Vickie.
I’m behind Rich with my Knucklehead project, the VL, XA, FL until it’s aligned and final welding takes place. I made a coil mount bolted to the Paughco Knuck top motormount. It took some digging. I didn’t want it too high to block the frame or too low to block access to the carb and intake manifold.
I brazed the pieces together, because of the variety of thicknesses and less heat required.
A clean and sober brother smokes herb for pain. He said this is the shit. Ya got me.
Frankie, is working hard on opening his Venice shop. This is all gold and silver leaf. Nice.
I bought a trailer for Bonneville. I’m having E-tracks installed, and I need to have 5-Ball stickers made at Quick Signs. I will to start on the next World Report for Cycle Source Magazine tomorrow morning. Outlaw Justice is out for final corrections. I have two book projects floating around, and I’m waiting for action on my screenplay, Splintered Road about board-track racing.
