THE LEADER BIKERNET WEEKLY NEWS for May 19th, 2022

Hey,

As you know life is nuts and has been headed downhill fast. When I’m forced to sit and ponder this American trial, I come to one major conclusion: Leadership. We need leadership, but we don’t need just political leadership. We need media leadership and this news item popped onto the screen today. Sounded like a breath of fresh air and maybe scientific transparency will abound. We can hope. Here’s a clip:

New CNN president announces different direction for network, vows to be a ‘beacon’ for journalism

Perhaps no company has had a worse year than CNN, but according to its new president, Chris Licht, the network will be turning away from cable news “extremism” in a bid to become a “beacon” for journalism.

Speaking at the Warner Bros. Discovery upfront presentation at the Theater at Madison Square Garden on Wednesday, Licht announced a new direction for the embattled network, who’s multi-million-dollar CNN+ streaming service folded just weeks after it launched, Variety reported.

Licht stated that he saw the mega-merger between Warner Bros., formerly CNN’s parent company, and media giant Discovery, as an opportunity to chart a new path in a sea of cable news competitors, such as Fox News Channel and MSNBC, who Licht sees as partisan.

“The next chapter in CNN is one where we aspire to be a beacon for the kind of journalism essential to a functioning democracy,” he told attendees. “At a time where extremes are dominating cable news, we will seek to go a different way reflecting the real lives of our viewers and elevating the way America and the world views this medium.”

BIKERNET NEWS RELEASE–Keith Ball’s Bikernet Blog Website Breaks into World’s Top 25 Motorcycle Sites

Deadwood SD – May 16, 2022 – Bikernet.com’s Blog, the brainchild of publisher, writer and freedom fighter Keith Ball, reached #25 in Feedspot’s list of the 100 top motorcycle blogs and websites earlier this year.

The Bikernet Blog, which celebrated its 25th anniversary last year, was one of the first sites to focus on the custom motorcycle market. It now includes not only custom bikes of all brands, but also technical material, travel information, legislative updates and commentary on issues of importance to motorcycle riders. Bikernet’s editorial approach is to provide the perfect mix of motorcycle hardware and culture, along with imagery that captures the artistry of custom and performance motorcycles and the people who ride them.

“Bikernet has consistently been ranked in the Top 30 sites on the Feedspot list, and this year we made it to #25 in the rankings, ahead of many well-known titles,” said Ball. “We don’t care if we’re considered relevant or not. We just do and publish what we love, and hope to ride free till the end.”

Ball’s background is as varied as the site. He’s a Viet Nam-era Navy veteran who served as an electronics technician on a heavy cruiser, then, upon his return to civilian life, he was a staffer and editor at a host of motorcycling and automotive titles. He eventually became Executive VP for Paisano Publications. His understanding of motorcycles and the motorcycling culture helped him develop and lead publications like Easyriders and In The Wind, which became the top newsstand titles in the industry, along with Hot Bike, Hot Rod Bikes, Quick Throttle, American Rider, Street Chopper and several other titles.

Ball’s resume is lengthy. He drove the founding and growth of motorcycle rights organization ABATE and was appointed as National Director of the organization. His motorcycling experience has made him a draw for top TV shows including roles as a team member in Monster Garage and as a judge on American Chopper. ABC News interviewed Ball for newsmagazine show 20/20. His racing resume includes being part of four successful motorcycle land speed record attempts and his honors include induction into the Sturgis Museum’s Hall of Fame (2006), Las Vegas Motorcycle Hall of Fame (2016), the Motorcycle Riders Foundation Hall of Fame (2018) and the Cycle Source Man of the Year (2006).

“Breaking into the Top 25 is a great honor for our site,” Ball continued. “But our mission won’t change. We’ll continue to provide a great mix of bikes, racing news, tech and opinion pieces to entertain people who love building and riding custom bikes.”

NEWS FROM THE NMA–Motor City should be Renamed Speed Hump City

The city of Detroit recently identified more than 2,000 new speed hump locations. The plan is to install 3,000 of the traffic obstacles by the end of 2022.

That is in addition to the 5,500 humps added throughout the city in 2021. When this street obstacle program started as part of Detroit’s Complete Streets program, the city only had 400 in place. If plans meet expectations, Detroit will have more than 10,500 speed humps to disrupt traffic before 2023.

Should Detroit’s nickname be changed to reflect the new reality?

Speed humps are different than speed bumps and cushions. They are generally 12 to 14 feet long, spanning the width of the road and ranging from three to four inches high. The shapes can be parabolic, circular, or sinusoidal. Speed humps are typically placed on residential streets, mid-block between intersections. One is often deemed insufficient.

A series of two or three speed humps set 350 to 550 feet apart are commonplace to prevent drivers from speeding up between them. Warning signs are typically displayed ahead of the road hazard. Even with the signs, the lower visibility conditions of bad weather, or dawn/dusk can cause some very unpleasant surprises for drivers on speed hump streets.

This graphic comes from California Member Stacey Charlton, who wrote How to Fight Speed Bumps, Humps, and Cushions Part 1 and Part 2 that was featured in December 2021 on the NMA’s Driving in America Blog.

Detroit’s public works department uses the following criteria for the placement of speed humps:

  • Local residential streets with speed limits of 25 mph or less
  • Nearby schools and parks
  • Streets with a record of speeding and traffic accidents
  • Streets with cut-throughs to or from arterial roads
  • Areas with block housing density
  • Areas with numbers of children present
  • Resident support on the block and a valid request made to the city

While some neighbors might like the speed humps, not all do. Detroit resident Pamela Foster exclaimed, “It’s too many of them…they’re putting them in spots that we don’t need.” Often the residents reconsider after the humps have been in place for a while and have to be dealt with daily. Be careful what you wish for.

It will be interesting watching for reactions by Detroit commuters as the hump count continues to grow.

Is this a safety measure or motorists profiling in the wars on cars, which includes motorcycles.–Bandit?

CHIX on 66 Presented by Harley-Davidson–
Teams Up with Road Guardians/Accident Scene Management

Riveter Chapter of the AMCA welcomes Road Guardians/Accident Scene Management as a Chix on 66 ride sponsor. As a result of this sponsorship, Chix on 66 will be able to provide live entertainment for an event taking place during the ride on Sunday, June 12, in Pontiac, Illinois.

Chix on 66 is a cross-country ride being held June 11-25, comprising 40 women that will follow the entirety of Route 66 from Chicago, Illinois, to Santa Monica, California, adhering to the original alignment to the extent possible.

For every day of the two-week, 2,500-mile journey, the group will begin and end together, but each woman can make the journey into what she wants it to be. The route will cover anywhere from 100 to 300 miles per day, with most days around 200 miles, allowing for an easy pace and ample time to stop for photos of the iconic points of interest along the Mother Road.

Riveter Chapter President Karan Andrea says, “I am doubly pleased with the support we have received from Road Guardians/Accident Scene Management. While the company leads the industry in accident scene training and motorcycle safety, co-founder Vicki Sanfelipo is a Riveter Chapter Board member.”

Accident Scene Management is the leading motorcycle trauma training organization in the world and the only accredited non-profit Bystander Program in the U.S. Road Guardians is a membership program that supports Accident Scene Management’s mission to reduce injuries and fatalities to motorcyclists through first response education.

Co-founder Vicki Sanfelipo states, “Road Guardians is proud to support the AMCA Riveter chapter’s Chix on 66 ride. Being a part of something groundbreaking and so fricking cool gives us great joy, and I will be joining the group on a portion of the ride. As an organization, we look forward to following the adventures on WomenRidersNow.com, Facebook, and Instagram.”

WHEELS THROUGH TIME MUSEUM OPENING–Dale’s Wheels Through Time is open for the 2022 season, and we can’t wait to see you! The museum’s hours are Thursday through Monday, 10AM to 5PM, and closed on Tuesday and Wednesday.

When you visit this year, one of the first new things you’ll see is the “Kennybuilt 9-Wheel Harley Rig.” A completely custom-built machine, it pays homage to the familiar Harley-Davidson Factory Semis.

Many of you have probably already seen the video where we took the Miller Light plane out of the museum, fired it for the first time in museum history, and Matt taxied it through the parking lot. If you haven’t seen it, be sure to check it out on our YouTube page. After filming, we placed the plane into an all-new exhibit that displays it in a way that pays honor to its history and purpose. We have also enhanced our “Homemade in America” exhibit, which features a variety of custom-made machines and inventions powered using Harley and Indian motors.

And of course, our newest exhibit, “The King of Old Motorcycles: Dale Walksler, The Man Behind the History,” has had an overwhelming response! Giving you a chronological look at the life of Museum Founder Dale Walksler, this exhibit features never before seen photos, a biographical timeline, and select motorcycles that were keystone moments in his life.

SEMA ACTION NETWORK NEWS–Court Allows Lawsuit Protecting Off-Roading at Oceano Dunes to be Heard

A San Luis Obispo County Superior Court judge ruled in favor of the nonprofit organization Friends of Oceano Dunes, allowing a “quiet title” lawsuit against the California Coastal Commission (CCC), California State Parks, and other government groups to move forward. The suit contends that off-roading and camping access to Oceano Dunes is protected by an “implied-by-law dedication” since off-highway vehicle (OHV) enthusiasts and campers recreated on the land for decades before the government entities acquired the properties.

A quiet title lawsuit is usually brought against a private landowner in a dispute over who owns the land. Friends of Oceano Dunes, however, is not disputing who owns the land but rather that the land was specifically designated for use for beach driving and camping. The case is set for trial in March 2023.

LADIES – START YOUR ENGINES!
— ROYAL ENFIELD BTR ROAD RACING KICKS OFF AT VIR–

Fifteen women ready for 2022 BUILD. TRAIN. RACE. opening round this weekend at Virginia International Raceway.

Milwaukee, WI (Tuesday, May 17, 2022) – Women racers and builders are reaching new heights in road racing in 2022, where the groundbreaking Royal Enfield Build. Train. Race. (BTR) program is getting ready to ignite the biggest season yet. Fifteen women from across the country from different age groups and varied backgrounds will come together for the six-round exhibition series, starting this weekend, May 20-22, as part of the MotoAmerica venue at Virginia International Raceway in Alton, Virginia.

“This is a landmark year for Build. Train. Race.,” said Breeann Poland, Marketing and Communications Lead – Royal Enfield Americas. “Last year was incredible; we received such support from fans and the industry. And this year, everything is twice the size—our field of riders, our schedule and our presence in the MotoAmerica paddock. We’re really going to wow people with a full grid of riders from all levels of experience. Among our new and returning riders, we can already see that the level of competition has come up. These ladies are going to put on a great show this season.”

From the excruciating process of handpicking participants over the winter, including new and returning racers, the BTR crew assisted each woman in the “Build” phase of the program. Generous sponsorship comes from Parts Unlimited, S&S Cycle, Harris Performance, Dunlop, Maxima Racing Oils, BOXO USA, Öhlins USA Suspension and Arai Helmets.

Each of the 15 participants received a Royal Enfield Continental GT 650 motorcycle that they spent three months designing and building. The “Train” phase included a recent test session at Barber Motorsports Park with Sportbike Track Time, where the BTR Road Race women all got on the track together for the first time.

With some guidance and mentorship from Melissa Paris, racers were able to dial in their Continental GT 650 motorcycles, and the entire field demonstrated that they are ready to race.

“It was so nice to get to meet all of my new teammates and see the returning ladies, who have become close friends of mine,” said returning rider Trisha Dahl (31, Minneapolis, Minnesota). “I’m proud of how fast I’ve progressed, but this new crop of ladies has far more experience, and it shows. Our first race is coming fast, and competition will be fierce, but we’re all coming together as a team to represent Royal Enfield North America, and it will be a beautiful sight when we all line up on that grid for the first time this season.”

For first-time participants such as Jessica Martin (38, Savannah, Georgia), the upcoming VIR race is fast arriving. “The opening round seemed so far away, now it’s here and I’m overcome with emotions,” said Martin. “The Build and Train portions were very encouraging and confidence inspiring. You could say I believe in me more than I ever have. The camaraderie among the team is what stands out most. We are here to help each other reach our goals, while also competing. It’s very amazing, intense and enlightening. And now, it’s go time!”

Above all else, the Build. Train. Race. paddock represents an atmosphere of support and encouragement for women racers, nurturing talent and inspiring both new and veteran riders to get out on the track. In a hotbed of national-level competition, the inviting nature of BTR continues to attract the attention of fans, industry and sponsors to the unique concept, now in its second year within the MotoAmerica FIM North American Road Race Championship.

Red Cross to Install Free Smoke Alarms in Baldwin Park–
As Part of National Effort to End Home Fires

LOS ANGELES, May 12, 2022 — On Saturday May 14, the American Red Cross Los Angeles Region will install free smoke alarms for Baldwin Park residents. This effort is part of a national Red Cross initiative called Sound the Alarm with the goal to install 50,000 free smoke alarms in more than 50 at-risk communities across the country this May. Baldwin Park was chosen based on the number of fire incidents in the community over the past three years. The presence of a working smoke alarm in a home reduces the risk of dying in a fire by 50%.

WHAT:
Sound the Alarm kickoff with remarks and volunteer training, followed by smoke alarm installations at area homes where volunteer teams will also discuss home fire safety with families.

WHERE:
Esther Snyder Community Center (4100 Baldwin Park Blvd.)

WHEN:
May 14, 9:30 – 10 a.m. (kickoff);
smoke alarm installations at area homes to follow until 2 p.m.

WHO:
Joanne Nowlin – CEO for the American Red Cross Los Angeles Region
Erica Frausto – Executive Director of the Greater San Gabriel and Pomona Valleys

Office of Mayor Emmanuel J. Estrada – City of Baldwin Park

Councilmember Paul C. Hernandez – City of Baldwin Park

“Our goal is to save lives,” said Joanne Nowlin, CEO for the Red Cross Los Angeles. “That’s why we want to make sure everyone has working smoke alarms, which can cut the risk of dying in a home fire by half.”

In 2022 alone, Red Cross LA has supported more than 670 people following 140 home fires. Most recently, the Red Cross responded to an apartment fire in East Los Angeles during Mother’s Day weekend. The volunteers helped more than 17 people displaced by opening an emergency shelter as well as providing food, water and other services as they begin the recovery process.

“Most people don’t realize they only have two minutes to escape a home fire — and that smoke alarms need to be replaced every 10 years,” Nowlin said. “Taking action with this knowledge can be the difference between survival and tragedy.”

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED— Event volunteers are needed to install smoke alarms and share fire safety information with families during May. Register at SoundTheAlarm.org to join a rewarding day of giving back in Inglewood on May 20 and in Long Beach or Montebello on May 21. No prior experience is needed — training will be provided. You can also make a financial donation to the Red Cross to help people prepare for, respond to and recover from home fires.

LOS ANGELES JOINS NATIONAL SOUND THE ALARM EFFORT This Sound the Alarm event is part of a national Red Cross initiative in May to install 50,000 free smoke alarms with partners in more than 50 at-risk communities across the country. Sound the Alarm events are a critical part of the national Red Cross Home Fire Campaign, which has helped save at least 1, 275 lives since launching in October 2014. As part of the campaign in Los Angeles, Red Cross LA volunteers and local partners have installed more than 52,000 free smoke alarms and made more than 17,600 households safer.

This work is made possible thanks to generous financial donations from regional partners: Southern California Edison, Howmet Aerospace Foundation, SoCalGas and Cedars Sinai.

SONG OF THE WEEK–

Song: “Keep It Between the Lines”
Artist & written by: Sturgill Simpson

Album: A Sailor’s Guide to Earth (2016)
* Best Country Album at the 59th Grammy Awards

Don’t turn mailboxes into baseballs
Don’t get busted selling at seventeen
Most thoughts deserve two or three more
Motoroil is motoroil
Just keep the engine clean
Keep your eyes on the prize
Everything will be fine
Long as you stay in school
Stay off the hard stuff
And keep between the lines

Don’t burn two lanterns at the same time
No ship out on the water or the field we’re in
‘Cause you live and you learn
Sometimes you get burned
When you get out, done got up
Walked out the door and went
Do as I say
Don’t do as I’ve done
It don’t have to be
Like a father, like a son

Don’t let them try to upsell you
There’s a reason they make chocolate and vanilla, too
If there’s any doubt, then there is no doubt
The gut don’t never lie
And the only word you’ll ever need to know in life is, why
Keep your head out of the clouds
And remember to be kind
And just stay in school
Stay off the drugs
And keep between the lines

  • Standard R8 Spindle – Low Cost, Easy to Use Tooling

It acts as a lathe, a milling machine and a drill press. Not bad.

BIKERNET UNIVERSITY ENGLISH DEPARTMENT VOCABULARY LESSON

toxophilite

[ tok-sof-uh-lahyt ] SHOW IPA
noun

a devotee of archery; archer.

WHAT IS THE ORIGIN OF TOXOPHILITE?
Toxophilite “a devotee of archery” is based on the term Toxophilus “bow-lover,” which Roger Ascham coined for his book of the same name published in 1545. Toxophilus is based on Ancient Greek tóxon “bow” and phílos “loving, dear,” the latter of which we learned about from the recent Word of the Day philtrum.

If you were wondering whether tóxon is related to the English word toxic, you have good instincts! Toxic ultimately comes from Ancient Greek toxikòn (phármakon) “bow (poison),” that is, poison used on arrows. Tóxon may be related to or derived from an Iranian source; compare Persian takhsh “cross-bow, arrow.” Toxophilite was first recorded in English circa 1790.

HOW IS TOXOPHILITE USED?
Apollo used to be an Olympic-class archer, a toxophilite of the first rank, until he took a bribe from a betting syndicate and blew a contest he should have won easily.

CAN’T FIND TECHS? DEALER GROUP TRAINS ITS OWN!

Like most dealers, the Windy City Motorcycle Company has been searching for trained techs. However, unlike most dealers they decided to do something about it by teaming up with a community college and top tier trainers. Then again, when you are the size of Windy City — 15 locations in Northern Illinois and Southern Wisconsin employing approximately 350 people, teaching about 2,000 students to ride annually and retailing more than 6,000 motorcycles per year — you can think out of the box and create your own tech school!

The School has honored their first graduating class of eight motorcycle technicians. The graduates successfully completed 360 hours of hands-on training and classroom sessions to become wrench-ready for their technician careers. An amazing 87.5% of these graduates were immediately placed into full-time roles in surrounding dealerships.

“The chemistry of the students with the instructors in this course was truly inspirational” said Doug Jackson, Woodstock Harley-Davidson/KTM/Triumph General Manager, and Midwest Motorcycle Mechanic School Leader. “The students have all improved greatly in proficiency and have vastly increased their knowledge of the motorcycle service industry. The difference in the student’s skills prior to this course versus today is nothing less than sensational.”

“After my dad surprised me with my first bike, I fell in love with riding,” says Class of 2022 graduate Amber. “I couldn’t see myself doing anything else. When I picked up a wrench, it just felt right.”

Slated to start in Fall 2022, Midwest Motorcycle Mechanic School is now enrolling students for their next class at the Woodstock, IL campus. For more information on the Midwest Motorcycle Mechanic School enrollment, click here:

Bikers Inside the Beltway

Yesterday, bikers from across the country arrived on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C. to meet with lawmakers and staff to discuss important motorcycling issues.

Over 200 congressional offices from Alaska to Georgia met face to face with motorcycle advocates on topics like profiling, autonomous vehicles, ethanol and transportation funding. Both in the Senate and House of Representatives bikers answered questions about our priorities and encouraged lawmakers to defend our freedoms.

Our work in D.C. would be impossible without the time and effort MRF members expend coming to our nation’s capital. Thank you to all that made the trip, and truly make the MRF the voice of the street rider in Washington D.C.!

NEW OLD SCHOOL BASKET FROM BDL

Hey Bandit, Here is that new old school basket I am working on.

I am working on a new style old school basket that uses a newer chain drive style clutch pack, and the basket will be a 68 tooth with a 43 tooth front pulley and be a little smaller in diameter.

This will also use the 138-tooth belt so there is more adjustment for the tin primary customers.

THE GOVERNMENT REACHES OUT TO THE MOTORCYCLE OUTLAWS IN THE BLACK HILLS–

US Department of Labor urges caution to avoid fall, electrical, other hazards during spring storm clean-up throughout South Dakota.

High winds from May 12 storm caused damage statewide

SIOUX FALLS, SD – After severe weather, such as the windstorm that roared across South Dakota on May 12, workers and others involved in storm cleanup may face hazards related to falls, downed power lines and sharp debris as they conduct recovery and cleanup operations.

Employers and workers should also be aware of heat illness and hazards from equipment used during response/recovery operations, such as chain saws.

“The Occupational Safety and Health Administration reminds workers and employers to pause and evaluate hazards, safety procedures and the need for appropriate personal protective equipment during response and recovery operations,” said OSHA Area Director Sheila Stanley in Sioux Falls. “Hazards can be minimized with safe work practices, training and proper planning.”

Only workers provided with the proper training, equipment and experience should conduct cleanup activities.

Protective measures should always include:
  • Evaluating work areas for hazards.
  • Using engineering or work practice controls to minimize hazards.
  • Wearing proper clothing and use personal protective equipment.
  • Assuming all power lines are live.
  • Using portable generators, saws, ladders, vehicles and other equipment properly.
  • Following safety precautions in traffic work zones.
  • Using fall protection when working at heights over 6 feet.
  • Proper use of portable generators, saws, ladders, vehicles and other equipment such as front-end loaders and skid steers.

OSHA’s Response and Recovery page has additional information to assist in planning cleanup work safely.

A MESSAGE FROM THE EMERALD BIKERNET TEMPLE ON THE PEAK–

My Day is Filled with Peace and Order

We can never make Peace in the outer world until we make Peace with ourselves.
–Dalai Lama

Today I let go of any stress, confusion, or discord. I no longer allow old beliefs, thought and habits of the past rule my world. I trust in the Infinite Power within to make my way clear. I remind myself of the choices I have of who I want to be and I am clear that my Life is one of Joy and Peace.

Remaining in the Consciousness of Oneness that my every need is met physically, mentally, and spiritually I accept this supply with deep gratitude. Anytime I feel the need I stop and go within and find the answer. As Rumi wrote “the universe is not outside of you. Look inside yourself; everything that you want, you already are.

Today Say: There is no better place to be than right here and right now. I Live in the present expressing my very best. I move forward with ease and grace having Faith and Trust in the Great Power within to dissipate any obstruction or challenge. I give thanks for my Truth and cherish the Peace and Order of this moment and every moment from here on. As it is written “the Lord is my Shepard and I shall not want” I move through my day in complete Faith.

And So It Is
Namaste’

When you feel a peaceful joy, that’s when you are near the truth.

GET READY FOR THE LONG ROAD OR DIE TRYING

Many, if not most of you have Facebook so you’ve been able to access the 2022 Long Road info Mike Allen put out on The Legion Of The Long Road Facebook page, so this letter is aimed more at those who don’t have Facebook.

This letter may be a little late in coming, but the Long Road is still 2 months to the day away and hopefully many of you have a flexible schedule or an easy going boss.

The 14th edition of the Long Road will continue to be a two night/stop ride. The feedback from the two-night format last year was all great. We picked great places to visit and do a short ride or two before we pack our gear and move on. This also gives breakdowns a chance to play catch-up. Of course, we’ll continue the “ Gypsy” style ride where we ride with as many or few others as we see fit.

The registration this year is $48. which includes a t-shirt, two nights use of the Planet Chopper roadhouse in Woodlawn, Virginia, beverages at The Rebel Spirit custom motorcycle shop in Thomasville, NC on Saturday, July 23rd and a catered meal when we return to Planet Chopper that evening.

Note: there is trailer parking available at Planet Chopper, call John Devonshire at 276-233-6974 to make arrangements.

For this years’ Long Road, there is a “Pre-Party” where those who are available and want to hang out for a couple of extra days. We will meet Friday July 15th at Soo Locks Campground located at 1001 E Portage Ave, Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan.

To make camping site reservations their number is 906-632-3191.

They are charging $35per night, but they allow up to 3 tents and 6 people on one site. Phone to make reservations. We will stay both Friday and Saturday night, departing Sunday the 17th for the “official” start. We will traverse the Mackinaw suspension bridge and run along the west side of Lake Huron in our journey.

The “official” start of Long Road 14 will be the only one night stay this year, Sunday July 17 at Point Au Gres Marina and Campground, 2325 S. Green Dr., Au Gres, Michigan 48703

Mention “Long Road” when you get to the campground and expect to pay $10. at the office. Our spots are already reserved in the group camping area.

Monday July 18, we ride south to spend July 18-19 at
Crystal Rock Campground, 710 Crystal Rock Ave. Sandusky, Ohio 44870

419-684-7177

Up to six people per tent site at $32./night. Cabins are available. Talk to Heidi and mention “Long Road” for 10% discount.

Wednesday, July 20, it’s a full day ride south on the scenic roads of Ohio, then a little east towards Fayetteville, West Virginia, near the New River Gorge bridge, staying two nights at Rifrafters Campground 448 Laurel Creek Rd. Fayetteville, WV 25840
304-574-1065

$15./ night tent space and cabins are also available. Call for availability. We will stay for two nights (Wed the 20th and Thurs July 21st to soak in the scenery and enjoy the activities in the local area.

On Friday we ride to Planet Chopper roadhouse at 1203 Woodlawn Rd., Woodlawn, Virginia 24381 276-233-6974 for Friday and Saturday night (July 22-23). On Saturday we’re meeting up at The Rebel Spirit custom motorcycle shop for some beverages at the red bar/table that used to be the centerpiece of the Long Road Lounge at Smokeout.

Long Road medallions will awarded to new riders with Lincoln Infield from Full Throttle Magazine Carolinas covering the event.

We then return to Planet Chopper for an awesome catered meal and more cheer before we head back home Sunday.

To guarantee you a t-shirt, please register by June 25th. It also helps us to know what numbers of people we can expect for the planning part of the ride.

Checks or money orders for $48.(USD) can be mailed to:

Include your shirt size.

Please shoot me a quick e-mail (reply) to let me know if you plan on coming. Let’s me know you got this e-mail too!

Hope to see y’all in July!

QUICK, OPEN THE BIKERNET BAD JOKE LIBRARY

Golfers Never Really Lie

An Old Golfer was hitting his ball from near a water hazard and his club fell into the water.

When he cried out, the Lord appeared and asked, “Why are you sad?”

The golfer replied that his club had fallen into the water and he needed the club to have a chance to win the tournament and supplement his meager pension.

The Lord went down into the water and reappeared with a solid gold club.

“Is this your club?” the Lord asked.

The golfer replied, “No.”

The Lord again went down and came up with a sterling silver club.

“Is this your club?” the Lord asked.

Again, the golfer replied, “No.”

The Lord went down again and came up with an old iron club.
“Is this your club?” the Lord asked.

The golfer replied, “Yes Lord, that’s it!”

The Lord was pleased with the golfer’s honesty and gave him all three clubs to keep,
and the golfer won his tournament and went home happy.

Sometime later, the golfer was walking with his wife along the water hazard, and she fell into the lake.

When he cried out, the Lord again appeared and asked him,
“Now Why are you sad?”

“Oh, Lord, my wife has fallen into the water!”

The Lord went into the water and reappeared with Kate Upton.
“Is this your woman?” the Lord asked.

“Yes,” cried the golfer.
The Lord was furious. “You lied! That is an untruth!”

The golfer replied,
“Oh, forgive me Lord. It is a misunderstanding.

“You see, if I had said ‘No’ to Kate Upton, you would have come up with Jennifer Anniston.

“Then if I said, ‘No to her, you would have come up with my wife. “Had I then said ‘Yes,’ you would have given me all three.

“And Lord, I am an old man not able to take care of all three women in a way that they deserve… so that’s why I said ‘Yes’ to Kate Upton.”

And God was pleased.

The moral of this story is:
If a golfer ever tells a lie, it is for a good and honorable reason, and only out of consideration for others.

SEMA ACTION NETWORK FICTION
CALIFORNIA PASSED A LAW ALLOWING THE STATE TO ENFORCE ITS EXHAUST NOISE LAWS BY NOISE CAMERAS.

FICTION
The California legislature is considering a bill that would create a pilot program allowing six cities to issue exhaust noise tickets using noise detection cameras. These cameras work similarly to red light and speed cameras and are being tested in other cities around the country. Contrary to some media reports, the bill has not passed the legislature. As of this writing, it awaits consideration on the Senate floor and must then still pass the Assembly before moving to Gov. Gavin Newsom for final approval or veto.

More importantly, the bill does not change California’s existing exhaust noise laws, which is based on SEMA’s model bill. The law limits cars and trucks to 95-decibels of exhaust noise when tested using an objective SAE International procedure. Motorists that receive a ticket would still have the ability to have their vehicle tested by the Referee to determine compliance. A court may then use the test result to dismiss the ticket.

Harley-Davidson regains number one position in INDIA

Hero MotoCorp with its vast network empire made sure their deal with Harley-Davidson works wonders.

After exiting and disappointing dealers and bike owners, now Sales figures for end of Financial Year March 2022 shows H-D is again Number One in Sales of Top-End Motorcycles in India – motorcycles having engine capacity above 1000cc.

Unlike last time, when some entry-level models such as Street 750, Iron 883, and Forty-Eight were assembled locally – all of the models are fully-imported from overseas.

Another surprise was – highest selling models were not these entry-level models as in the past. This time 1000cc+ models clocked a big majority of sales.

Out of Total Sales of 601, the number of 1000cc plus models sold was 531 units – mostly of the new Pan America 1250 adventure tourer and Sportster S.

Note: In India, financial year runs from April 2021 to March 2022. Let’s see if petrol and commodity prices change anything in the Q1 and Q2 of FY-2023.

MORE QUOTES OF THE WEEK

from NEW WORLDS FOR OLD
A PLAIN ACCOUNT OF MODERN SOCIALISM

BY H. G. WELLS

LONDON
CONSTABLE & COMPANY Ltd.
1912

INTRODUCTORY REMARKS
“Undiluted Atheism, theft and immorality…. I know of no language sufficiently potent to express fully my absolute detestation of what I believe to be the most poisonous doctrine ever put forward, namely Socialism.”
— His Grace the Duke of Rutland.

“Let all parties then unite to defeat this insidious Socialism which is threatening the country, and take immediate steps to expose and bring it to light. The country may truly be said to be sleeping over a veritable volcano which the next general election may precipitate, unless steps are taken at once to bring this nightmare into the light of day and force it out of its creeping nocturnal habits.”
— Mr. Dudley S. A. Cosby in the Westminster Review.

HANG ON!—Working on the Pandemic. The clutch sticks. The belt might be too tight, preventing the trans from shifting. I’ve spoken to three master mechanics and received valuable insight, which we will impart in a detailed tech next week.

Buck Lovell is shooting the Pandemic for Cycle source. Mike Stevenson a Hamster, chopper builder is working on a story about converting to a trike. This is heavy business for a guy who rode choppers all his life.

Next historic bike feature. The NELK- 1905- a unicorn- one of a kind. Shop burned down and this was the only surviving machine. Don Whalen the founder of Sierra Madre Motorcycle Company has the story details. “To me it combines elements of Art Deco, Streamline Moderne, — circles, cylinders, kidney shapes. Beautiful wood rims and grips,” said Markus Cuff, master photographer.

I’m also working on the second Chopper Chronicles story, which is a trip. But first I must question every aspect of this story line and challenge all my original assertions. WTF over?

Robert Pandya stopped by for dinner and whiskey last night. He is now the new COO of the Buffalo Chip. Hang on for changes at the City of the Chip. I can still feel the peanut-butter whiskey.

I’m also working on the first tech for the Irish Rich VL frame build with an S&S Knucklehead engine and I’m hoping to be able to install an Evo 5-Speed transmission. It’s my first build in my new Black Hills home, as soon as the fucking shop is finished.

Lee Clemens from Departure Bike Works sent this highly modified S&S B carb and an intake manifold. I need a few more parts to make it complete for our Bonneville effort, the Salt Torpedo.

As you can see, it’s all nuts. But we’re making progress, goddammit!

Ride Free Forever,

–Bandit
