Hey,
It’s been an odd week. Remember, this is supposed to be the kick-off to our Roaring ‘20s and now we’re locked down. Plus, the Governor of California said recently about opening that everything will change in the future. No more major sporting events, etc.
What about dances and parties, will we all wear masks? Tough to smoke a joint or take a shot of Jack with a mask on? WTF, over.
Here’s another odd one. This Pandemic bodes well for individual transportation, like cars and motorcycles. All those folks who want us out of our cars and stuffed into electric subways or busses are going to need to rethink their plans. It also doesn’t work for a homeless population left to hang out wherever they want.
Let’s hit the news and see what else floats to the surface. At the end I’ll report on all the shop projects and the kick-off to another Chance Hogan book.

The Veterans of Foreign Wars Unmet Needs Program offers grants up to $1,500 to eligible Veterans, service members and military families.
Since 2004, the VFW has provided more than $5 million supporting Veterans and military families who face an unexpected financial hardship related to their military service. The VFW program can directly pay eligible expenses with no obligation of repayment. VFW also provides referrals to other organizations should additional assistance be required.
After five combat tours in the Marine Corps, Sergeant Dustin Ellison was suffering from the post-war effects of a traumatic brain injury (TBI) and severe PTSD.
“I thought [Dustin’s discharge date] would be the happiest day since he came home from service… I was wrong,” explained Heather Boyd, Dustin’s sister. “It was 100 [times] harder after war. It breaks my heart to watch my brother go through life like a ghost carrying guilt from serving for his country.”
Heather hoped Dustin’s struggles would end after being accepted into a 12-week program specifically designed to treat military-related TBI and PTSD. But when the severity of his condition and medical complications requiring surgery unexpectedly extended Dustin’s treatment, Heather feared her brother would leave the program if he was unable to keep up on his bills.
After learning about the VFW’s Unmet Needs program during a wounded warrior PTSD focus group, Heather reached out to VFW for help. An Unmet Needs grant came through just in time.
“I personally had depleted the money in my bank account… this was not only a relief for myself, but it allowed him the opportunity to focus on treatment and not stress about his lack of income,” said Heather.
Receiving an Unmet Needs grant provided the assistance Dustin needed to stay current on his bills. More importantly, it provided him the freedom to focus on his health – culminating with his graduation in January.
Heather explained that while Dustin still has work to do and will likely face daily struggles for the rest of his life, thanks to the VFW Unmet Needs program, he’s functioning better than ever.
VFW Unmet Needs Eligibility
Applicants must be the service member, Veteran, or eligible dependent listed under the Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting System (DEERS).
The financial hardship must be due to one of the following:
Currently on active duty, whose financial hardship is a result of a current deployment, military pay error, or a discharge for medical reasons.
Discharged on or after Sept. 11, 2001, whose financial hardship is a direct result of military service connected injuries and/or illnesses.
The financial hardship cannot be caused by:
Civil, legal or domestic issues, misconduct, or any issues that are a result of spousal separation or divorce.
Financial mismanagement by self or others, or due to bankruptcy.
All grants are paid directly to the creditor and applicants must provide the most current bills due.
Household expenses – mortgage, rent, repairs, insurance.
Vehicle expenses – payments, insurance, repairs (major repairs for vehicles over ten years old
will not be considered).
Utilities.
Food and clothing.
Children’s clothing, diapers, formula, school or childcare expenses.
Medical bills, prescriptions & eyeglasses – the patient’s portion for necessary or emergency
medical care only.
Credit cards, military charge cards or retail store cards.
Cable, Internet, or secondary phones.
Cosmetic or investigational medical procedures & expenses.
Taxes – property or otherwise.
Furniture, electronic equipment or vehicle rentals.
Any other expenses not determined to be a basic life need.
The eligible and ineligible expense lists are not all inclusive. Each case will be carefully reviewed. Upon approval, payments will be made directly to the creditor. Harley-Davidson lays off staff, cuts salaries, amid coronavirus outbreak--The announcement comes weeks after the motorcycle maker withdrew its earnings forecast for this year, saying pandemic-induced disruptions could dent its ability to supply and sell motorcycles.
Harley’s shares were last trading down 5.7% at $18.25.
With the pandemic hitting their revenues and drying up cash flows, companies of all sizes are trying to conserve cash and bolster liquidity.
However, worries about the impact of the highly contagious virus, which causes a respiratory illness called COVID-19, on Harley’s business have prompted both Fitch and Moody’s to downgrade its credit ratings.
Harley has yet to quantify the impact, but Fitch says the company could see a 25% decline in sales this year.
Separately, Moody’s expects declining sales to undermine Harley’s liquidity position. At the end of 2019, the Milwaukee-based company had $2.6 billion in cash and committed credit facilities, which the rating agency says would marginally cover the $2.3 billion of debt that is due to mature in the coming twelve months at Harley’s financial arm.
As part of the cost cuts, Harley said it would “significantly” reduce all non-essential spending.
Its chief executive officer and board of directors will forgo their salaries, the company said, though it didn’t say for how long.
Salaries of the executive leadership would be cut by 30%, while most other salaried employees would see a reduction of between 10%-20% in their paychecks.
Outside the United States, it will take similar actions.
Harley said salary reductions will be reassessed at the end of the second quarter.
The company said it will also not hand out merit increases for 2020 and will freeze hiring.

Unfortunately, the major of Los Angeles has jailed all Chinese restaurant, laundry and shop owners. I was told they were being tortured in the city’s underground sewer system.

LONG ROAD UPDATE– Hello everyone! Just a little update on the 2020 Long Road. I know we have all been going through some tough and scary times the last month or so. I hope and pray you are all well and that none of your family or friends health has been affected by what I shall leave unnamed as we are already pretty sick of hearing the name.
I’m really hoping we are still able to start the ride when we all meet at Nelson Ledges Quarry in N.E. Ohio on Sunday June 28th. I haven’t seen anything posted on LowBrow Customs website about them cancelling the GetDown from Fri. June 26th to 28th (for those who want to arrive early for the event) but I’m watching! The timing and progress of what’s going on makes things look like they may not happen at that time, but I’m keeping the date set at that for now.
If June 28th ends up becoming dead in the water as a start date, come HELL OR HIGH WATER, I still want to do a ride at some point in the summer and see as many of you as I can! We will all need something to look forward to, to brighten our spirits once this is over! Unlike the big events that are cancelling due to the tremendous logistical issues, we can be flexible as to a start date, provided the campgrounds actually open up AND, they open the borders so me and my fellow Canadians can into the US! Even if we have to schedule into late August or early September, I’m game!
My plan, as it sits, is still the same, starting at Nelson Ledges Quarry (whether the LowBrow GetDown happens or not), heading over to, and south along the Ohio River to the first stop. We then ride southwest through the heart of Kentucky to the Natural Bridges area about 40 miles southeast of Lexington. From there, we will head southwest through KY, into Tennessee, to a stop in the Crossville area, providing they’ve recovered from apparent tornados. Then, we will travel south into Alabama, where we will head west to the northwestern side of Alabama for a final night of revelry and debauchery!
Riding will take place with a departure from Nelson Ledges Monday morning to our final stop Thursday in Alabama, where we part ways Friday morning to head home.
I’d love to hear from each and every one of you, whether you are planning on doing the ride or not, just to hear that you and those around you are doing ok. I haven’t seen or heard from some of you in a number of years, so shoot me an e-mail, even if it’s only a couple of lines! Also, let me know how flexible you are on a future date or any other ideas!

CNN publishes Chinese propaganda praising China, degrading the US Navy–
CNN this week published a report copying almost word-for-word a Chinese Communist Party press release praising the People’s Liberation Army Navy’s efforts to contain the coronavirus and degrading the U.S. Navy’s failures to do likewise.
Almost as bad as CNN’s promotion of Chinese propaganda is the network’s defense of its decision to run state-sponsored agitprop.
The story was a “single update from our international site’s 24-7 Live Story,” a CNN spokesman told the Daily Caller. He added, “[The story] explicitly states the sourcing as a PLA story and identifies the Global Times as ‘a state-run tabloid.’ That transparency is key as a global news source serving a global audience.”
His explanation, however, contrasts sharply with the fact that CNN has made significant edits to its report following online criticism — almost as if someone realized just how bad it looks for a supposedly serious and free news organization to repeat Chinese Communist propaganda nearly verbatim.
For starters, the headline to the CNN story originally read, “China’s PLA Navy is controlling coronavirus and aircraft carrier’s deployment proves it, report says.”
The opening paragraphs also read, “A Chinese naval flotilla headed into the Pacific over the weekend, evidence that the People’s Liberation Army Navy has done a much better job controlling coronavirus than the US Navy, according to a story posted on the PLA’s English-language website.”
The original version of the CNN report continued:
The report said that the Chinese carrier was carrying out this operation while four US Navy aircraft carriers – the USS Theodore Roosevelt, the USS Ronald Reagan, the USS Carl Vinson and the USS Nimitz – have reported cases of coronavirus, crimping their operations.
The Roosevelt, now docked in Guam, has been hit the hardest by the virus, with 585 cases among its crew of more than 4,000 people. Almost all of them have been moved ashore on the island and work is going on to disinfect the ship, delaying its ability to deploy.
The PLA Navy has no such issues, Chinese military experts told the Global Times.
“Through the voyage, the Liaoning showed that the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) has done a great job in the epidemic prevention and control work and COVID-19 epidemic has not had an impact on its deployment and operations,” the story says, citing Xu Guangyu, a senior adviser to the China Arms Control and Disarmament Association.
“It showed that the PLA can dispatch troops stationed anywhere at any time, with the troops always maintaining vigorous combat capabilities. The Chinese people can always count on them,” Xu is quoted as saying.
Just so we are all on the same page: CNN reported this week that, according to Chinese officials, the Chinese military has done a better job than the U.S. Navy of controlling the viral pandemic that the Chinese government tried to cover up.
Everything about the People’s Liberation Army “report” cited by CNN screams that it is government propaganda, yet it ended up on CNN’s website anyway.
How?
The original CNN story, bylined to an “international homepage editor” based at CNN’s Hong Kong bureau, was based entirely on a “news report” that appeared first on a Chinese government website. It is not the sort of place where an “international homepage editor” for a free press would normally trawl for genuine news items, unless the point was to contrast.
The author then made the judgment call that the Chinese government “report” was worthy of serious attention and news coverage, a decision that presumably required the backing of an editor. The author then wrote an article based entirely on a “report” that says the People’s Liberation Army believes the People’s Liberation Army is doing a great job. The CNN article was then (presumably) edited, double-checked by CNN web producers, and then published online. Considering the number of CNN employees who were likely involved in bringing the story to life, it is remarkable that no one flagged it for propaganda or even questioned the news value of a report that states simply that China believes China has handled the pandemic wonderfully.
A spokesman for CNN did not respond to the Washington Examiner’s request for comment.
As mentioned in the above, the CNN story has undergone significant changes, including to its headline, which now reads, “Chinese state media claims country’s navy is not affected by coronavirus.”
The opening paragraphs have also been heavily amended. They now read:
The coronavirus outbreak, which began in the Chinese city of Wuhan in December last year, has spread to more than 180 countries and sickened close to 2 million people, including more than 80,000 in China. Yet according to the Chinese government, not a single serving member of the country’s military has been infected.
The reported absence of cases among China’s armed forces comes despite the fact that thousands of military personnel were sent to Wuhan to assist in front line medical efforts. It also comes in sharp contrast to other military powers, notably the United States, which have seen an uptick in cases in recent weeks.
That is not as egregious as the original version, but the updated version still quotes “Chinese military experts” who say China has done a superb job of controlling the virus.
The fact that there is not even a single, solitary reported case of coronavirus in China’s military says only one thing: China is clearly lying about the severity of the viral pandemic within its borders. Amazingly, ostensibly serious and free news outlets are treating these lies as if there is some debate about whether they may be true or not.
There is no reason to trust China’s government on a good day. There is even less reason to trust it on a subject where it tried to fool the world.

Hey Jules! How’s your confinement going?
I’m confined in the Nord-Pas-de-Calais region with my brother, our girlfriends, our dogs and their cat! I’m very busy with my daily work, but during the weekend I appreciate being able to take the time to cook for everyone. Fresh pasta, risottos, vegetable stir frys… a real pleasure!
I feel reassured to have been back in France for a few months, and I think of those who are confined in worse conditions than me, unable to enjoy a large house with a garden. Of an optimistic nature, I tell myself that all this will certainly be over by this summer.
You’re one of the new recruits to the team. Can you tell us a bit more about your background?
I joined the Vintage Rides team just two months ago. My new position: Assistant General Manager. I make sure that our trips to South East Asia, Peru, Africa and Mongolia are playing out well. This includes booking hotels, managing the motorcycles for the different tours… I make sure that the passengers have a comfortable seat, that a member of the team greets the riders at the airport, in short, that all the details that make a successful motorcycle trip are taken care of, to guarantee unforgettable memories for our riders.
This is a new step for me after having worked for several years in the hotel and tourism industry abroad. A great experience that allowed me to backpack a lot since I lived in Saint Vincent & Grenadines, Burma and Lebanon. I intend to put this knowledge of the hotel industry to good use in the management of our future trips!
What kind of rider are you?
I rode a lot with my Royal Enfield Classic 500 during my two years in Burma, as well as a custom Scrambler on a small Honda Tiger base. The latter was ideal during my stay in Indonesia, for the winding roads of Bali!
Measuring 1m95, it’s hard to find a bike that doesn’t look like a Dax when I’m on it… My dream would be to own a Yamaha T700 that looks like a Dakar and can go everywhere. I also love Blitz or Baak custom bikes on old Triumph or CB550 bases, where the pleasure of riding exceeds the comfort.
Since my return to France, I have unfortunately not been able to ride a lot because I was very busy with my move to Lyon, but I plan to discover the region and take a tour of the Alps soon.
What was your first adventure?
In 2018, I set off with a friend on a two-week round trip from Delhi to Leh and back by Royal Enfield, without any mechanical assistance or any real preparation. On the menu: passes at over 5000m altitude, ball bearings that give up in the mountains, freewheeling descents of passes, with the engine off, to conserve fuel, and the discovery of mountain sickness! I left my comfort zone in order to give chance to chance, encounters, and mistakes. More than pride, it’s a multitude of memories that I will keep in mind and it’s certainly my most beautiful motorcycle experience.
With hindsight, I think we were a bit unprepared because even if we both had the motorcycle level, we were not well equipped! The only protection I had was a helmet and I hadn’t anticipated the rain gear at all. This experience helped me understand the importance of having the right equipment for the weather conditions as well as protective gear such as a jacket, a back protector and high boots (and rain gear!).
Could you share a nice encounter you were able to experience during one of your adventures?
During a road trip in Burma, in the Shan region, I had the chance to attend a traditional wedding in a local village. It was organized a little at the last moment but the spontaneity of this celebration touched me, as well as the natural kindness of the people.
What are your next motorcycle adventure desires?
I would like to develop my mechanical knowledge to participate in the creation of a custom or a renovation. I would also love to discover a craft with indispensable know-how in the motorcycle world such as saddler, metalworker or welder.
In terms of travel, having left France at the age of 5, my desire is to discover our beautiful country: I would love to discover the roads of the Pyrenees, Auvergne or Vercors.

ARCH MOTORCYCLE OF THE WEEK–

5-Ball Vest in Rehab-– We’ve had a few extra days of cool weather allowing me to use my vest again. Rode to physical therapy today. I’m still lacking muscle strength, but will bend enough to get on the mid pegs so that’s a plus. Maybe it’s time to finish the mid control replacement then.

STRIDER BIKE NEWS–Proceeds from auction support getting children on bikes in Kindergarten PE Class
Xavier is best known for being a musician – but as of late, he has come into his own in the motorcycle industry at his Texas-based Providence Cycle Worx. He’s built a few notable bikes, among them a Pan/Shovel called “Grace” that was recognized as the Easyriders 2019 Bike of the Year, and he has twice been invited to the prestigious Sturgis Buffalo Chip’s Motorcycles As Art Exhibition curated by Michael Lichter.
Xavier, also known as “X”, was honored to be asked to build a tiny Strider Custom, especially given the roster of builders he would be included with.
X noted that he wanted to build his Strider Custom Bike for a little girl. He’s a strong proponent of women in motorcycling, and he’s also a believer in getting kids started young on two wheels.
As far as the custom build, Xavier left the frame of the 12” balance bike stock, painting it hot pink while making a custom tank and fenders to match the profile of the Strider.
The “tins” on the bike are also pink, with pink lace panels, pinstriping and tiny detailed fuel lines. He made custom mini apes to give it a chopper feel and to allow the rider to grow into the bike. The low-profile fender has ribbed fender struts to match. He also used the same style tank mount as he did on an S&S Shovelhead-style build he did last year.
The little gem of a bike is clean and sparkling, just perfect for a first experience on two wheels and a striking example of pure eye candy – just the thing to attract new riders! The Flying Piston was delighted to have X join the 2019 Custom Strider Program.
This one-of-a-kind Xavier Muriel creation will be auctioned off, starting Tuesday, April 14th at 12pm MT and will run for a 72-hour period.

SALT TORPEDO LIST—Here’s the ongoing list after the testing wreck. Hang on for a full report in a week.
Order new axle—Done
Order new fasteners for the spindled caps.-Done.
Take exhaust off and have the mouth straightened. I have removed the extension and will remove the system today to take it to my local muffler shop for adjustment and making another extension. This is done and Tim has finished it at San Pedro Muffle. I need to pick it up.
Take rear wheel off and check caliper bracket and rotor. The caliper bracket appears to be bent. Since the muffler was crushed against the lower caliper this needs to happen.–Done
Find someone to repair and true the wheels. Peformance Wheel in Long Beach can do the trick.
Check frame level.
Face front shock plate.
Fix damage fender, which I may do today.—Almost done
Make new fender brackets to fit new steering arms.
Total of 4 chromoly heim joints—they are here sans locking nuts.

The tank was shipped to Paughco and I had an initial discussion with Ron Paugh about it. We will get specific when he receives it. I discovered one of the tank mount tabs bent today.
Tank List:
The tank can’t move forward at all. It’s only 1/8 of an inch from the pilot’s roll cage now. The gas cap needs to stay in about the same spot. We cut a hole in the body so we could reach it. We are hoping you can install the recent venting system, so we don’t need to run a vented cap. Not a big deal.
If possible, we would like to move the petcock out bound about as far as possible. After we adjusted the alignment of the engine, the petcock was too close to the front of the rear rocker cover.
The tank can’t be taller but it can be wider by at least a ½ inch on either side and longer by a couple of inches.
That’s my list currently. The body will be completed Tuesday morning. I’m anxious to see this puppy. We considered flames, but the pilot vents made it impossible to fit flames in.
I ordered a less stiff set of springs for the front shocks from Suspension Technologies.

I’m also getting close to a post-wreck Salt Torpedo report. Most of the parts will be in the shop this weekend. I spoke to Mike Stevenson, who once worked on 200 mph cars. He gave me a lot of clues and some new alignment tools. Hang on for more reports. The paint is in the gym but I’m not putting the body on until we know this puppy is aligned and the weight is properly distributed.
I started another Chance Hogan book, and I’m trying to get into my awake at 6:30 mode, so I can hammer at the keys until 8:00 in the dark shop, before life fires up and all hell breaks loose every day.
There are other projects around the shop and my grandson, Frankie, is constantly on the phone with his FXRP projects. We are working on a new order of Leathers and I’m trying like hell to have some Bandit’s Cantina Stickers made and a new batch of Bikernet stickers.
I’m looking forward to the weekend and working outdoors. I’m making a bench out of a Buell motorcycle galvanized pallet
