NEWS FROM THE BIKERNET CLIMATE CENTER–How Misguided Environmentalism Is To Blame For California’s Wildfires
The saddest part about these fires in California is that they are self-inflicted. Californians should not allow such mismanagement to continue.
I grew up in California’s Ventura County and have family in both southern and northern California. Right now, the most deadly fire in California’s history is racing across northern California. The Camp Fire has already killed at least 56 people, burned down 7,700 homes, and destroyed the entire town of Paradise. A brush fire is also wreaking havoc on southern California. The Woolsey Fire has destroyed 98,362 acres, killed two people, and damaged several Hollywood landmarks such as the set of “MASH” and the Reagan Ranch.
Article after article blames two things for California’s frequent fires: global warming and human action. For example, a BuzzFeed article is titled, “How A Booming Population And Climate Change Made California’s Wildfires Worse Than Ever.” While dry conditions make fires more likely and people often start them, this misses the big picture. President Trump summed it up on Nov 10. He wrote, “There is no reason for these massive, deadly and costly forest fires in California except that forest management is so poor … Remedy now, or no more Fed payments!”
Trump is right. Mismanagement and overregulation deserve most of the blame, but he should keep in mind that the federal government owns 57 percent of California forest land. This mismanagement is also not a result of a lack of care. Believe me, Californians care.

SALT TORPEDO UPDATE—Eric Bennett of Bennett’s Performance came to our Industry party and pointed out something to us. “That puppy will need to be under a chain hoist so you can lift and fit dozens of times.” He was right so James “The Tileman,” and I reconfigured the shop yesterday and fitted the Salt Torpedo under our chain hoist.
I immediately cut six inched out of the frame and repositioned the front end to fit better in the belly tank. And today I jammed over to Phillips Steel in the Bikernet ’72 F250 to pick up all the tubing we will need to build the frame. Hang on for the next report.

NEWS FROM BILL BISH AND NCOM–OHIO ENACTS DISTRACTED DRIVING LAW
Since the early days of motorcycling, riders have rightfully complained that car drivers don’t see them. Frustrated and infuriated by the lack of respect on the road, Motorcycle Rights Organizations across the country began lobbying for and passing laws that added fines and penalties for inattentive drivers who cause accidents resulting in injury or death. So-called “R-O-W” laws to punish careless or distracted drivers who carelessly violate our Right-of-Way have cropped up in numerous states nationwide, with Oregon being the most recent state to enact such a law last June, spearheaded by the Oregon Confederation of Clubs.
When “distracted driving” entered the national consciousness more than a decade ago, the problem was mainly people who made calls or sent texts from their cell phones. Innovations since then, such as car Wi-Fi and a host of new apps, have led to a boom in internet usage in vehicles that safety experts now say is contributing to a surge in highway deaths. After steady declines over the last four decades, highway fatalities have increased to the highest levels in years, and distracted driving has been cited as the main culprit. The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) claims that distracted driving has led to the biggest spike in traffic deaths in 50 years!
Now, distracted driving is about to become a costlier offense on Ohio roads, as effective October 29, 2018, new regulations and penalties went into effect pertaining to what constitutes “distracted driving.” House Bill 95 broadens the description of driving distracted beyond using telecommunications or other hand-held electronic devices while driving. Officers now can cite drivers observed to be engaged in any “activity that is not necessary for the vehicle’s operation and that impairs, or reasonably would be expected to impair, the driver’s ability to drive safely,” according to the legislation.
The bill defines “distracted” as:
– Using a handheld electronic wireless communications device – including phones, tablets and computers – except when it is on speakerphone or otherwise hands-free.
– Any activity “that is not necessary to the operation of a vehicle” and could or does impair the driver.
Governor John Kasich signed the legislation July 30 to make distracted driving a secondary offense in the state. So, if you’re pulled over for speeding or another moving violation, and found to be driving while distracted, the new law enhances the fine by an additional $100 or completion of a distracted-driving safety course. A person can only be cited for “distracted driving” if the law enforcement officer witnesses the offense while the moving violation is occurring, according to the bill.
Texting while driving has already been a secondary offense in Ohio since 2012, but HB95, which passed the legislature with bipartisan support, applies to distracted driving in all its forms, from putting on makeup to changing the radio station. Similar laws are already on the books in Connecticut, Maine, Washington state, West Virginia, and the District of Columbia.

VET GROUPS: Fix care at VA nursing homes
‘Disregard for veteran safety’ cited in report

WASHINGTON – Six veterans’ groups are calling on the Department of Veterans Affairs to improve the quality of care at its nursing homes following a story by USA TODAY and The Boston Globe detailing “blatant disregard for veteran safety” at a VA nursing home in Massachusetts.
“Anybody who respects veterans should be angered by this,” American Legion National Commander Brett Reistad said. “America’s veterans deserve better.”
The groups, who together represent nearly 5 million members, said veterans who risked their lives for our country shouldn’t
have to risk their lives in VA nursing homes.
In Brockton, Massachusetts, investigators found two nurses asleep during their shifts, even though the facility knew it was under scrutiny and inspectors were coming to visit, looking for potential signs of patient neglect. A whistleblower had reported that nurses and aides did not empty the bedside urinals of frail veterans, they failed to provide clean water at night and didn’t check on the veterans regularly. The VA said the napping nurses no longer work at the facility.
The story was the latest in an investigation by USA TODAY and the Globe that revealed care at many VA nursing facilities was worse than at private nursing homes in the agency’s own internal ratings, kept secret from veterans for years.
The stories detailed disturbing examples of substandard care – a veteran with undiagnosed scabies for months, another struggling to eat in Bedford, Massachussetts; and a third sitting for hours in soiled sheets and another writhing in
pain without medication in West Palm Beach, Florida.
A Navy veteran was declared dead after he walked out of a supposedly secure VA nursing home and was never found in Tuskegee, Alabama. An Army vet landed in intensive care suffering from malnutrition, septic shock and bed sores after a stay at a VA nursing home in Livermore, California.
“The stories being reported about the treatment of some individual veterans at these facilities are nothing short of horrifying,” said Rege Riley, national commander of American Veterans, known as AmVets.
He called on VA Secretary Robert Wilkie to “take swift and transparent action to fix this.”
Veterans of Foreign Wars, Disabled Veterans of America, Paralyzed Veterans of America and Vietnam Veterans of America joined AmVets and the Legion in calling for action. Together, the groups are known as the “big six” and wield significant clout in Washington.
“The VA must address and correct these issues,” said Garry Augustine, executive director of Disabled Veterans of America.
VA spokesman Curt Cashour said the residents the VA typically cares for are sicker than those in private nursing homes, making “achieving good quality ratings more challenging.” He said that overall, VA nursing homes “compare well” with the private sector.
“We look forward to briefing each of these groups in the near future regarding these crucial facts,” Cashour said.
The VA has 133 nursing homes across the country that serve 46,000 veterans annually.
Newly released VA data show that 95 of them – about 71 percent – scored worse than private nursing homes on a majority of quality indicators, such as rates of infection, serious pain and bed sores. Roughly the same number, 93, received only one or two stars out of five for quality in the agency’s own ratings.
In a scathing statement declaring those facilities “failures,” VFW National Commander Vincent “B.J.” Lawrence said the VA “must improve its delivery of quality care at these facilities.”
Reistad, the Legion’s commander, added, “We not only expect VA to fix these problems immediately, but we want transparency.” On Sunday, after meeting with VA officials, he said he is confident they
will work with the Legion and the other groups to “institute needed improvements.”
The VA released the quality information on its nursing homes only after learning in June that USA TODAY and the Globe planned to publish it. The agency still has not released the results of inspections.
The reports can include instances of neglect or poor conditions that can be a tip-off to current and prospective residents about problems at a facility.
“I don’t see how veterans are best served by the VA not being open about the level of care it’s providing,” AmVets spokesman John Hoellwarth said.
Cashour said the VA is working with an outside contractor who conducts the inspections, Wisconsin-based Long Term Care Institute, to remove patient information from its reports before they are released, maybe by the end of the year. Private nursing homes have three years’ worth of inspection reports posted on a federal website, Nursing Home Compare.
In September, Congress passed and President Donald Trump signed into law legislation requiring the VA to publish quality ratings going forward. The law does not mention inspection reports.
The Republican-led House VA Committee launched an investigation of VA nursing home care after the initial USA TODAY and Globe reports, but a spokeswoman, Molly Jenkins, said the probe won’t be finished in time to hold a hearing this year as anticipated. The Democrat poised to take over the committee in January, Rep. Mark Takano of California, said it is a “critical issue that will continue to be a priority.”
In Massachusetts, home to two, onestar VA nursing homes – in Bedford and
Brockton – lawmakers are demanding to know what steps the VA has taken to improve patient care there and at other facilities around the country.
“The continued care lapses at VA facilities raise questions about whether concrete, lasting measures are being implemented to prevent misconduct from occurring again – or whether certain VA facilities are unable to institute changes necessary to provide our veterans with the care befitting their service to the country,” Sens. Ed Markey and Elizabeth Warren, both Democrats from Massachusetts, wrote in a letter to Wilkie.

Adventure Motorcyclist Travels Into Philanthropy–Neale Bayly Rides Keeps On Riding!
Adventure motorcycling mixed with the kind of feel-good stories the world needs more of is the domain of Neale Bayly, a longtime journalist and photographer who is using his skills as a storyteller in video form.
“As a motorcycle journalist, I liked the idea of showing motorcycling in a positive light,” explains Bayly.
“My idea was to bring people on amazing journeys through the developing world to really experience the true beauty of these countries from the saddle of a motorcycle, to really challenge them to step outside of their regular life,” says the effervescent ex-Brit who now lives in North Carolina.
“And then, when they felt comfortable with their new surroundings, bring them to an orphanage or place of need to see how they could benefit those who struggle with far less than what they have. I wanted them to see the beauty in the children, not the dirt,” Bayly underscores.
If you don’t recognize Bayly from the pages of countless print and online magazines, you might identify him from the TV show Trippin’ On Two Wheels, a program that illustrated the fun and adventure to be had when traveling aboard motorcycles. Following that experience, Bayly developed a program of his own, called Neale Bayly Rides, as a mechanism to promote adventure motorcycle travel and raise money and awareness for the abandoned children of the Wellspring foundation.
TV executives were skeptical of Neale’s good-hearted ambitions with his concept and his desire to show motorcycling in a positive light. He wanted to show motorcyclists as giving, caring and adventurous.
“It was a tough sell in America,” Bayly relates. “I had 13 network rejections in 18 months, complaining that it was, ‘Too soft,’ ‘too fluffy.’
But Bayly’s dedication to philanthropy could not be stopped, and the show aired on Speed a few years ago, then was later rebroadcast on MAV TV. The heart-warming adventure can now be seen on the Neale Bayly Rides YouTube channel.

Neale hopes the motorcycle community will get behind the show, as he intends to continue his mission to show adventurous motorcyclists traveling to exotic locations to help those in need.
“I can’t say too much at the moment,” says Bayly somewhat cryptically. “We are back on tour in South Africa in November riding to raise money for the Wellspring foundation, and again in Peru next April and May.”
Bayly’s format remains the same: Riding motorcycles in beautiful places in the world to benefit those less fortunate than ourselves.

MY DRINKING AND DRIVING EXPERIENCE!–I would like to share a personal experience with my friends about drinking and driving. This might save you the cost and embarrassment of being arrested for DUI.
As you know, people have been known to have unexpected brushes with the authorities from time to time, often on the way home after a “social session” with family or friends.
Well, this year, it happened to me. I was out for the evening to a party and had more than several margaritas coupled with a bottle of rather nice red wine. It was held at a great Mexican restaurant.
Although relaxed, I still had the common sense to know I was slightly over the limit. That’s when I did something I’ve never done before. I took a taxi home.
On the way home there was a police roadblock, but since it was a taxi they waved it past, and I arrived home safely without incident. These roadblocks can be anywhere and I realized how lucky I was to have chosen to take a taxi.
The real surprise to me was that I had never driven a taxi before. I don’t know where I got it, and now that it’s in my garage, I don’t know what to do with it.

FINAL CALL TO ACTION: NATIONAL PROFILING SURVEY–
As you know, the Motorcycle Riders Foundation (MRF) has been working hard to get support to advance our bipartisan and bicameral legislation to address motorcycle profiling. Earlier this year, we sent out a call to action asking you to take a few moments to answer the Motorcycle Profiling Project’s National Survey.
If you have already answered that call, we thank you for your continued support. If you have not yet had the chance to take the survey, however, we are asking that you please do so today and share the link to the survey with your friends via social media.
The data gathered through this survey is invaluable to the Motorcycle Riders Foundation and to the work we do here on Capitol Hill to address the issue of motorcycle profiling. For example, during our Bikers Inside the Beltway national lobbying event, the MRF was able to provide attendees from 33 states specific data of reported incidents of profiling related to their individual state—all because of last year’s Motorcycle Profiling Project National Survey.
While the Motorcycle Profiling Project 2018 National Survey is winding down for the year, it still needs more people to participate in the survey to broaden the sample size. We are still optimistic that we can make the final push on H. Res. 318 and S. Res. 154 during the remainder of this current lame duck session of this Congress and gather additional co-sponsors.
The MRF is asking that you help us make sure that the data we present to our lawmakers is as accurate as possible. The survey is totally anonymous and is only 13 questions long.

CONGRATUALTIONS KEITH MASHBURN NEWLY ELECTED MAYOR OF SEMI VALLEY
Keith retired from the Ventura County Fire department in 2005, after 30 years, ranked as a Battalion Chief. He didn’t sit around long. He was the Planning Commissioner from 2007 to 2010 and elected to the Semi Valley City Council in November of 2012. He also ran 3 businesses and was active in several committees. Keith was President of the Trailblazers for 8 years. In the late 60’s he was a Yamaha factory sponsored racer. We know he will be the best mayor Semi Valley has ever had.
PAUL HUNT (GRUNT) LOST ALL IN FIRE
Paul (Grunt) Hunt’s home was in Paradise, California where the whole town burned. He is very lucky to have survived, but he lost his home, business and vintage motorcycle collection He said he has his dog and his friend. He is 81 years old. Paul toured Europe a long time ago, racing anywhere there were motorcycles. Chuck Daly has started a Go Fund Me account for him. GEORGE ROEDERS TREASURERS ON AMERICAN PICKERS
The American Pickers had an episode on the late, George Roeder’s collection of bikes, parts, pieces, treasures and junk. It was filmed at his shop & farm in Monroeville, Ohio. His wife and kids still live there. There was of out-buildings and all stuffed mostly motorcycles. George was a Harley Davidson factory rider, National number 94. He won 8 Nationals and piloted a Harley Davidson Streamliner to a land speed record in 1965. You can find the show on the www.history.com Channel. The episode was called Jersey Jackpot. John Serra and Darrel Packard went 92.512 MPH on a much modified open-frame Kawasaki, in the 175cc class, at the rain delayed Bonneville Speed Week. Phillip Waterberg broke the Gas record on a 124.5289-mph Vincent. The Dirt Diggers Hopetown Grand Prix was on the cover. Dusty Coppage and Dick Miller Hopetown photo in the Open Amateur/Expert class. Preston Petty and Brian Wade were also on cover. The 10th Annual Hopetown event drew 850 riders. Several European motocross racers came to U.S. for 6 week MX series. Joel Robert won the 500cc International class and Bengt Aberg the 250cc International class. Larry Bergquist and Gary Preston took overall win of Baja 1000 on a 350 Honda. Darrell Shultz and Danny Chandler were big winners at Trans-AMA MX Series round at Sears Point. Carey Steiner went home from the Women’s National Motocross in Carlsbad Raceway with the #1 plate. Bob Balentine won the CRC Cal City Grand Prix. Bernie Schreiber won the Trick or Treat V.O.T.E. Trials in Littlerock, California. Gaylon Moiser won the final round of the AMA/Toyota Supercross Series at Anaheim Stadium. Bob Hannah was 2nd, but won the championship title. Larry Roeseler and Jack Johnson won the SCORE Baja 1000 on a Husqvarna, by an hour. Some of the top riders of the week on the Southern California MX scene: Brian Myerscough, George Holland, Erik Kehoe, Jeff Ward and Bob Elliott. Mike Hannon won the Redding Dirt Riders Buckhorn Enduro. Dick Burleson won the R.M. Wheeler AMA National Enduro and took his fifth title.

Dan Smith won final round of the AMA Hare & Hound Championship in Wickenburg, Arizona, and also took the Championship. Other Championships: Dave Schultz won the NHRA title and Ed Lojak won the GNCC title at a race in Pennsylvania. On cover was a fully customized Harley Davidson by Jeff Hamilton, built by Bartel’s H-D and sold by Neiman-Marcus for $25,000. Jeff Russell won the final National Enduro of the year in Illinois.

ENJOY YOURSELF—I’m in a frumpy mood. I watched something last night and it disturbed me. It was a PBS drama series and two women did wrong and one violent man against a woman. I don’t like violence against women, although women are just human beings and also capable of evil. I had a tough time going to sleep.
May evil stay away from your homes during the holidays. May your weeks be filled with accomplishments and joy. May we all learn and practice compassion and benevolence.
I stopped by Brat Style in Long Beach on the far Westside twice the other day to deliver and early Xmas present, but they weren’t around. I saw Go and his lovely bride riding out of the show parking lot last week, but couldn’t get suited up fast enough to catch them.
