SPEEDY BIKERNET WEEKLY NEWS for October 25, 2018

Hey,

This week became an amazing experience. It started with a conversation with a local sign painter and muralist. Before I spoke with him, my list contained Truck projects, writing projects, a Cycle Source Deadline, Salt Torpedo research and goals and then I spoke to Aubry the starving artist with five kids.

“I could use some work,” Aubry said during my conversation. I only have one paint project left on the building, the inside patio wall and the back of the shop, but I didn’t know he just painted shit without it being an artistic endeavor. Also, in the back of my mind was an Industry party scheduled for the middle of November. I brought it up and Aubry jumped on it. But suddenly my project list exploded. I had to prep the walls and clear 14 years of patio shit out of the way.

Let’s get to the news. It’s stressful just thinking about it, although I handle my stress level with meditation every day. It’s amazing.

The Bikernet Weekly News is sponsored in part by companies who also dig Freedom including: Cycle Source Magazine, the MRF, Las Vegas Bikefest, Iron Trader News, ChopperTown, BorntoRide.com and the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum. Most recently the Smoke Out and Quick Throttle Magazine came on board.

BIKERTOBERFEST REPORT–

DAYTONA BEACH — Hoteliers on Monday pointed to the impact of two recent hurricanes — Florence and Michael — as a factor in the decline of occupancy and daily room rates for Biketoberfest, a signature event that draws tens of thousands of tourists to the area annually.

“The economy is better,” said Gary Brown, longtime owner of the 91-room Sun Viking Lodge in Daytona Beach Shores. “We should have a bigger crowd, but I think the storms definitely scared away a lot of people. Also, there’s the displacement of people in the Carolinas and the Panama City area, the people who had damage and didn’t bother to come. It all contributes.”

Brown was among the hotel executives who responded to an informal online survey conducted by the Lodging & Hospitality Association of Volusia County. Many of those hoteliers reported a decline in business to some degree.

“I’m a little surprised,” said Bob Davis, president of the association. “Initially, I didn’t believe that the storms would have much impact, but now I do believe that a lot of people who come down from the Carolinas and Georgia were affected by the hurricanes and they did stay home, and rightly so, to take care of their dwellings, their families and their careers. I absolutely agree with that.”

Brown reported that his average daily room rate was down 20 percent compared with Biketoberfest a year ago, an event that unfolded a little more than month after Hurricane Irma hit Volusia County in early September. In 2016, Biketoberfest took place in the immediate aftermath of Hurricane Matthew’s Oct. 7 strike in Volusia and Flagler counties.

The 744-room Hilton Daytona Beach Oceanfront Resort logged nightly sellouts over Biketoberfest, said Jim Berkley, the hotel’s general manager, but thinks the cumulative impact of three years of storms has affected Biketoberfest crowds.

“There did seem to be a visual softness in the market this weekend, if you’re using traffic and attendee visibility as a barometer, however I believe that this event will continue to be one of our destination’s ongoing popular events,” Berkley said by email. “Frankly, I can’t recall another state like Florida that has had three consecutive years of hurricane impact in different areas of the state. That scenario has certainly contributed to the ebbs and flow of incoming bike enthusiasts here in Daytona Beach over the last three years.”

The Hilton wasn’t the only hotel to offer a positive report. Business was up at the Daytona Beach Regency, compared with the 2017 event, said John Betros, the hotel-condominium’s general manager.

Ormond Beach-based Premier Resorts & Management reported sell outs on Friday and Saturday nights at all of the company’s beachfront hotels. “The shoulder days were softer than last year,” said Domien Takx, the company’s vice president of operations.

Premier properties include Hilton Garden Inn; Holiday Inn Hotel & Suites; Best Western Daytona Inn Seabreeze; and Ocean Breeze Club Hotel, all in Daytona Beach; as well as the Holiday Inn Express & Suites, Daytona Beach Shores.

Others, such as Karen Lindley, assistant general manager of the Best Western Aku Tiki Inn, reported “much less” Biketoberfest business. “Lots of repeats did not show this year,” Lindley said.

Hawg Halters Acquires Renegade Wheels Brand–Hawg Halters Inc., of Dahlonega, Georgia, has announced that it has bought Renegade Wheels (Orange, California).

A long-time wholesale and retail business partner and, in effect, Renegade’s south eastern United States distributor, HHI has acquired the Renegade Wheels brand, all their wheel designs and related intellectual property, and will now offer the Renegade program to dealers across the U.S., Canada and internationally.

HHI President Mark Thompson: “Renegade Wheels is a natural fit as we continue to grow Hawg Halters. The acquisition is a logical extension of our existing business partnership with Renegade”

HHI President Mark Thompson told AMD Magazine that “this dynamic new association of two strong brands is a critical step in our strategy of expanding the Hawg Halters business model – one of continuing to develop complementary product lines which maximize our distribution programs to the motorcycle industry.

“Hawg Halters and Renegade have been long-term collaborators – the Spartan forged billet wheel, with matching true floating rotors additionally available, was a Renegade exclusive design for HHI introduced 18 months ago”

“Renegade Wheels’ core philosophy of offering premium quality, uniquely styled and well designed and engineered products mirrors HHI’s own focus and will be carried forward through a continuity of manufacturing processes in both Southern California and Georgia.”

Noted for its front end conversions, builder kits, fenders, triple trees, standard and short neck bolt-on Bagger builder’s kits and, above all, its respected brake caliper and rotor programs, Thompson joined Hawg Halters in 1999 and has successfully evolved the business throughout the market cycle that has been seen in the past twenty years, growing steadily and, in no small part, influencing the direction of the custom market as their versatile and innovative solutions offered dealers and their customers new options.

AMA ALERT, Oppose the proposed EPA Action on E15–Tell the president to protect motorcyclists from unsafe fuel

On Oct. 8, President Trump announced he would direct the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to allow year-round sales of E15 fuel, a blend of gasoline that is 15 percent ethanol by volume, by waiving Clean Air Act requirements related to Reid Vapor Pressure. This action would put the owners of millions of motorcycles and ATVs at significant risk, because this fuel can cause engine and fuel system damage and may void the manufacturers’ warranty.

We are urging you to tell President Trump to reconsider this move and protect American motorcyclists from this unsafe fuel.

Take Action

The American Motorcyclist Association opposes the proposed change and—with other stakeholders affected by this decision and a group of 20 U.S. senators—urged the president to reconsider.

None of the estimated 22 million motorcycles and all-terrain vehicles in use in the United States is approved by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to use E15 or higher ethanol blends. Not only does using E15 in motorcycles and ATVs violate federal law, it can cause engine and fuel system damage and may void the manufacturers’ warranty.

The rush to force more E15 fuel into the marketplace by the ethanol industry greatly increases the chances of inadvertent misfueling by motorcyclists and ATV owners—as well as owners of boats, small engines and other machines that are not warrantied for E15 use-due to blender pumps, confusing pump labeling and the lack of any significant consumer education by the ethanol industry or the federal government.

Thank you in advance for contacting the president on this important issue. Please forward this alert to your friends and ask them to send a message as soon as possible, as well.

Now more than ever, it is crucial that you and your riding friends become members of the AMA to help protect our riding freedoms. More members mean more clout against the opponents of motorcycling. That support will help fight for your rights-on the road, trail and racetrack and in the halls of government.

Join the AMA at americanmotorcyclist.com.

TROPICAL TATTOO SHOW COVERAGE COMING TO BIKERNET BAGGERS–The show is always good. The event was smaller because of the two hurricanes that hit the south shortly before event.
Tourism was expecting 125,000 and later reports estimated 90,000 – 100,000
Still a good turn out and easier to get around though some places traffic was still stop and go.–Rogue

Former Hells Angels Leader George Christie to Play Biker in ‘The MobKing’–George Christie spent nearly four decades running the Ventura, California chapter of the Hells Angels. Now, he is joining another controversial motorcycle organization. Sort of.

Christie will play the role of Alex “Gus” Ventura, former leader of a fictional Canadian outlaw motorcycle club called Unforgiven, in the forthcoming television crime series “The MobKing.” He will also serve as a technical advisor.

In the series, Christie’s character develops a friendship with the main character, Florida mob figure Mike White, played by actor Ciro Dapagio. Dapagio’s character owns a gentlemen’s club and is a partner in a new Indian casino, fighting to climb his way to the top of Miami’s underworld, following a 19-year prison stint. Along the way, he confronts rival organized crime factions, drug cartels, outlaw bikers and law enforcement, all while dealing with the ordinary challenges of being a devoted father.

“I’m excited to be working on this project,” Christie said. “Outlaw motorcycle clubs aren’t always depicted realistically in movies and TV shows. I spent most of my life with one and I have been to prison, so I know what really goes on.”

Christie founded the Ventura, California chapter of the Hells Angels in the 1970s. During his tenure, he survived gang wars, multiple prosecutions and attempts on his life. He left the Hells Angels in 2011 and is now a writer and consultant.

In 2015, Christie was the focus of the highly rated History Channel documentary series, “Outlaw Chronicles: Hells Angels.” More recently, he has also been starring in “Outlaw,” a one-man stage show, based on his life. He is also the author of three books about outlaw motorcycle clubs, including his memoir, “Exile on Front Street: My Life as a Hells Angel…and Beyond.”

“George Christie has been a fantastic source to assist our writer group in understanding the three-dimensional lifestyle of a leader in an outlaw motorcycle club,” said Sutish Sharma of New Street Pictures, one of the producing partners of “The MobKing.”

“George’s experience has provided great authenticity,” added show runner Pat Andrew of Wanda-Halcyon Television. “His natural leadership and complexity came through in his audition.”

MEMO FROM EARL’S GARAGE– One of my buddies has a motorcycle shop. Apparently lately he is getting fed up with stupid questions. Some of his recent comments..

Two fairly large guys pull up on their bikes come inside my bike shop and the one guy says. “I’d like to talk to you about putting a pair of apes on my bike.

“I say OK, no problem I can do that.”

He asks. “how long will it take and how much will it cost?”

I say, “I can do it for free and will be done in less then a minute”.

He asks, “how the hell can
you do that?”

I respond with..”Well if the both of you get on your bike
when your leaving, blam.. there you go, a pair of apes on your bike…”

Guy walks in the shop and says, “I would like to talk to you about boring my cylinders.”

I asked, “what their not bored enough already just sitting in your garage all the time..”

Guy asks, “Can you change my oil?”

I say, “Yes but it really has to want
to change..”

So dude pulls up to the shop, slips inside and asks, “hey would you mind
checking the air in my back tire?”

I said sure and walked out into the
parking lot looked at it and walked back into the the shop.

He says,
“so.”

I said, ” so what?”

He says, “Well what do you think?”

I said, “that’s the right amount of air for a flat.”

So a guy walked into my shop the other day and as always I say how can I
help you?

He replies, “I just blew a seal.”

I say, “I don’t believe I can help you with that.”

He says, “why not?”

So I told him that.. I
don’t sell mouthwash and I believe you should probably talk to an attorney if you ever want to get back into the zoo again…

DRIVER GUILTY OF HOMICIDE FOR CRASH THAT TOOK NICKY HAYDEN’S LIFE
An Italian court found the driver guilty and he received a one-year suspended jail sentence, loss of license and has to pay court costs. The findings were that he was going about 70km in a 50km zone. Hayden didn’t stop at a stop sign while cycling in Rimini, Italy. An expert witness at court said that if the driver was at the proper speed limit he could have avoided the accident whether Hayden stopped or not. The accident report put 30 percent of the blame on the driver. The judge will reveal within 90 days, the reasoning for his findings. The family is still pursuing a $6 million civil suit against the driver, the maximum amount covered by the driver’s Italian insurance policy.

NEWS FROM THE WEST WING–
New Health Options for Small-Business Employees

“Americans should have more options than one plan their employer selects for them. And they should be able to maintain their insurance when they change employers or exit the job market to raise a family or care for a sick loved one,” Labor Secretary Alexander Acosta, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, and HHS Secretary Alex Azar write in The Wall Street Journal. “That’s why the administration is proposing a regulation that would create a new way for employers to provide health coverage for employees.”
“This proposal would give millions of workers and their families more control over their health care. It also holds the promise of more-efficient health-care spending, expanded business growth, and higher wages.”

During an interview with USA Today yesterday, President Donald Trump “vowed to send as many troops as necessary to the U.S.-Mexican border to block a growing caravan of Central American migrants, calling their trek ‘an assault on our country,’” David Jackson, Susan Page, and John Fritze report. “I think this could be a blessing in disguise because it shows how bad our laws are,” the President said aboard Air Force One. “The Democrats are responsible for that.”

The Investor’s Business Daily editorial board writes that Democrats have been trying to hide just how extreme their “Medicare for All” plan truly is. In fact, Democrats aren’t telling American families “anything about what ‘Medicare for All’ means. Probably because the plan would be the most radical socialization of health care on the planet.”

“Chancellor Angela Merkel has offered government support to efforts to open up Germany to U.S. gas, a key concession to President Trump as he tries to loosen Russia’s grip on Europe’s largest energy market,” Bojan Pancevski reports in The Wall Street Journal. U.S. Ambassador to Germany Richard Grenell responded to the news by saying, “We’re creating jobs and we’re also deepening the trans-Atlantic relationship. The U.S. is totally committed to bringing U.S. LNG to Europe and to Germany.”

Today, Zero Motorcycles, the global electric motorcycle sales and innovation leader, announced the release of its 2019 model line featuring more powerful base models, brand new tech features, extended range and bold new styling.

These advanced new models represent the strongest lineup of motorcycles in Zero’s history. Key improvements include:
Faster and Lighter: The exceptionally nimble Zero DS ZF7.2 is 96 lbs lighter than its longer-range counterpart and now boasts an impressive 35% more horsepower and an 8% higher top speed.

Longer Range: The new Zero DS ZF14.4 now leverages the same battery as the premium Zero DSR to extend its range by 10% year over year, enabling it to reach a range of 204 miles in the city and 97 miles on the highway.

New Accessories: The wildly popular Zero DSR has been newly outfitted with a collection of Zero’s bestselling accessories including a dual-sport windscreen, tank grips, hand guards and a 12V accessory socket.
Advanced Operating System: The “brains” behind the bikes have been upgraded to include an industry-first “Long Term Storage Mode” in which the motorcycle automatically puts itself into a low-power mode to optimize battery state-of-charge and further improve long-term battery health.

Bold and Sleek Styling: An overhauled color scheme and undercoat graphics package outfits the bikes with cold new styling. New colors include subtle Dune and Rhino Gray featured on the Zero FX and FXS, sophisticated Jet Black and Black Metallic for the Zero S and SR and sleek Sandstone and Caldera Metallic for the Zero DS and DSR.

ALTERNATIVES TO BONNEVILLE SALT FLATS– two places in the western USA to land speed race that I hadn’t heard of before, the Alvord Desert of southeastern Oregon, and Diamond Valley Playa (alkali flat) in Nevada. Expect that Bonneville will soon be unusable, and more racing will go to these places

Ed Shadle had went 515 mph with the North American Eagle on the Alvord straightaway, and Kitty O’Neil went 512.7 mph there in 1976 in the SMI Motivator, which I just covered in https://justacarguy.blogspot.com/2018/08/once-upon-hollywood-there-was-as.html

However, feeling that the surface of Alvord was too soft for over 700 mph, Shadle chose Diamond Valley Playa, a dry lake bed about 25 miles north of Eureka, for supersonic speed runs.

Of course, the other places that are lesser known than Bonneville for that level of runs is Black Rock, Nevada, where Burning Man happens, and the Nevada State Route 160 near Pahrump where Koenigsegg just went 277.9

Thurst SSC officially broke the sound barrier 21 years ago when accelerating to 763.035 mph at Black Rock, and still trying to get funding to run in the Kalahari Desert of South Africa for the Bloodhound SSC.

https://www.reviewjournal.com/local/local-nevada/team-leaders-death-doesnt-end-quest-for-land-speed-record-in-nevada/
https://www.reviewjournal.com/local/local-nevada/thrill-seeker-gets-ok-to-try-for-land-speed-record-in-nevada/

By the way, the Environmental Assessment request to the U.S. Bureau of Land Management https://eplanning.blm.gov/epl-front-office/projects/nepa/92024/128254/156103/20171218_NAE_Land_Speed_EA_FINAL.pdf shows that the only considerations for using a lifeless dry lake bed, that the US Govt labels “an area of flat, dried-up land, especially a desert basin” where there is NOTHING, not even water or grass, still has to be judged against the imagined needs of the great sage grouse.

To minimize or avoid potential impacts to fish, aquatic invertebrates, wildlife, special status species, migratory birds, raptors, and great sage-grouse. Hard to believe the govt is this stupid, but there you have it, on a govt document.

. Not that ANY are on the dry lake, but, you know… govt regulations:
• American Indian Religious Freedom Act of 1978 (42 USC 1996)
• BLM Shoshone-Eureka Resource Management Plan, as amended (2002)
• Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act of 1940, as amended (16 USC 669-668d)
• Clean Water Act of 1977 (33 USC 1251 et seq.)
• Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act of 1980(42 USC 9615)
• Diamond Valley Weed Control District (NRS [Nevada Revised Statutes] 555.202)
• Eureka County Master Plan, as amended (2010)
• Eureka County Water Resources Master Plan (2016)
• Executive Order 11988, Floodplain Management, as amended (1977)
• Executive Order 11990, Protection of Wetlands (1977)
• Executive Order 13045, Protection of Children from Environmental Health Risks and Safety Risks (1997) which you’ll remember, wasn’t a factor they assessed when the FBI killed all the kids at Waco.
• Executive Order 13112, Safeguarding the Nation from Impacts of Invasive Species (1999)
• Executive Order 13186, Responsibilities of Federal Agencies to Protect Migratory Birds (2001)
• Federal Land Policy and Management Act of 1976 (Pub.L. [Public Law] 94-579)
• Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1918 (16 USC 703-711)
• National Environment Protection Act of 1976 (42 USC 4321)
• National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, as amended (16 USC 470 et seq.)
• Nevada and Northeastern California Greater Sage-Grouse Approved Resource Management Plan Amendment (2015)
• Resource Conservation and Recovery Act of 1976 (42 USC 6901 et seq.)
• Safe Drinking Water Act of 1977, as amended (42 USC 300f et seq.)

And here’s an idea of how varied the American Indian Religious Freedom Act is:
Traditional social activities important to the Western Shoshone include pine nut gathering, edible and medical plant gathering, hunting and fishing, and spiritual/ceremonial practices.

Such sites of importance include, but are not limited to, existing antelope traps; certain mountain tops used for vision questing and prayer; medicinal and edible plant gathering locations; prehistoric and historic village sites and gravesites; sites associated with creation stories; hot and cold springs; material used for basketry and cradle board making; locations of stone tools such as projectile points and grinding stones; toolstone quarries; hunting sites; sweat lodge locations; locations that of consistent pine nut harvesting and ceremonies; boulders used for offerings and medicine gathering; rock shelters; and petroglyph locations; and tribally identified TCPs.

None of which are on the desert alkali flat. However, if they were, the govt would still put an oil pipeline through, but they wouldn’t allow dry lakebed racing.

Anyway, it’s fascinating to read the govt report which spells out every plant, soil sample, all 23 birds, fish and critter that possibly could be in the area. HOW anyone ever gets an oil drilling operation going, which might pollute the area, is a mystery to me

HARLEY SALES ALMOST DOUBLED!–Given a lift from improved international sales, and its 115th anniversary rallies, Harley-Davidson on Tuesday reported higher quarterly earnings.

As the company has set its sights on growing internationally, it has also faced other hurdles, including a 25-percent tariff imposed by the European Union on U.S. motorcycles in retaliation for President Donald Trump slapping tariffs on foreign steel and aluminum.

In the U.S., the company has struggled to attract younger customers who haven’t shown interest in motorcycling like past generations. U.S. motorcycle sales were down 13.3 percent for the quarter, compared with a year earlier.

Baby boomers, earlier a boost to Harley’s sales as they hit some of their best income-earning years, are now aging out of riding.
“For years, the North American heavyweight motorcycle industry grew at double-digit rates due to low interest rates, a strong economy, a rising stock market, and the aging of the baby boomers. However, in recent years and going forward, we expect a much slower growth pattern for the U.S. motorcycle industry,” said industry analyst Robin Diedrich of Edward Jones Co.

Still, Harley’s profit was a positive sign. The world’s largest manufacturer of heavyweight motorcycles said it earned $113.9 million in the three-month period ended Sept. 30, up 67 percent from $68.2 million in the same period a year earlier. On a per-share basis, the Milwaukee company earned 68 cents, compared with 40 cents a year earlier.

Harley reported $1.32 billion in revenue in the recent quarter, up nearly 15 percent from the year-ago period.

Some of the gain was attributed to a 2.6 percent increase in the company’s international sales.

Harley said its 115th anniversary celebrations, in the U.S. and the Czech Republic, also helped boost sales this summer and fall, with a combined 260,000 visitors. And the company added international dealerships, apparel stores in Asia and an Amazon- .com storefront in the quarter.
Harley maintained its full-year shipments forecast range of between 231,000 and 236,000 motorcycles.

“Third quarter progress tracked to our plans with numerous highlights including another quarter of international retail sales growth and increased year-over-year earnings per share,” Harley president and CEO Matt Levatich said in a statement.

Harley said its worldwide motorcycle sales fell 7.8 percent in the recent quarter.
The company has a goal of growing its international business to 50 percent of its sales. A key step was announced in July when Harley said it would partner with an Asian manufacturer, yet unnamed, to build smaller, less expensive bikes for India.

FUELIN’ AROUND TO LAUNCH IN VEGAS–
Ladies & Gentlemen, Start Your Reading

FUELIN’ AROUND, the much-anticipated novel by motorsports veteran JK Kelly, will launch October 30th at the SEMA Show in Las Vegas.

“People say I’ve had a really interesting life and wanted to know more,” said Kelly, whose debut novel FOUND IN TIME received five star reviews and an unreserved recommendation from the Midwest Book Review.

“FUELIN’ AROUND is funny, fast-paced, sad, exciting, and humbling. We’ve all had our ups and downs but at least by reading this everyone can rest assured that if a dreamer like me can succeed then there’s hope. Luck has played a very big part in my life so it’s only fitting we’re going to launch in Vegas.”

Kelly got his first writing and photography credits in Super Stock, Car Craft, and Hot Rod magazines and drove to Pomona from San Antonio in ’78 to deliver drums of race fuel for a Texan named Steve Burns to an up and coming racer, Warren Johnson. He then landed his dream job as the PR Director for Darrell Waltrip and the Gatorade 88 NASCAR racing team. From there, when an opportunity at a young VP Racing Fuels opened, Kelly went all in and spent nearly thirty years helping to build the business.

FUELIN’ AROUND chronicles the many entertaining, thought provoking, and heart breaking moments of his personal and professional life as Kelly reveals a behind the scenes look at how VP waged an epic David versus Goliath war against the giants of the industry.

In his review of FUELIN’ AROUND, Eurodragster News Editor Andy Rogers wrote, “I read the first half of the book in one sitting, which in itself says a lot. I could not put the book down. Most enjoyable stories that made me laugh out loud.” John DiBartolomeo of Drag Racing Edge Magazine commented, “A page-turner you’re going to attempt to read in one shot and if not, it’s going to keep you coming back.”

Fuelin’ Around is now available on Amazon, Kindle, Barnes & Noble, and at book signings in New York, Philadelphia, and the U.K. For more information visit jkkelly.com.

NEWS FROM THE BIKERNET INTERNATIONAL NEWS BUREAU IN INDIA–Chinese spies are reportedly listening to Trump’s phone calls with the goal of stopping US-China trade war

The Times reported that Trump has three iPhones: two that have had their capabilities limited by the National Security Agency, and one that has not been altered at all.

I guess he should have worried about millions of Chinese made expensive phones and computers sold in USA instead of destroying Harley-Davidson which has a few thousand motorcycles sold declining sales since ten years. LOL.

New Oil Guide by LIQUI MOLY–
Clarity in the crowded field of oil specifications

Oil is no longer a general lubricant, but a highly specialized, liquid replacement part that has to precisely fit the corresponding engine. But finding your way through the crowded field of oil specifications, approvals and brands is not easy. The new oil guide by the German oil and additive specialist LIQUI MOLY at www.liqui-moly.us offers help quickly.

“The oil guide is the most popular part of our website,” says Günter Hiermaier, CEO of LIQUI MOLY. “Every day, 5,000 users search for the right oil here: Garage professionals and car drivers alike.” Just a few clicks are enough to select the make, model and engine, and already you receive a list of the right motor oils. This is so important because motor oil isn’t just motor oil anymore. Using the wrong oil is like fitting the wrong replacement part. The consequences range from a loss of warranty to increased wear and engine problems right up to total engine failure.

But the oil guide can do even more: It also lists the right gearbox oils, brake fluids, radiator antifreeze, power steering oils as well as other operating liquids. And not just for cars, but also for motorbikes, classic cars, commercial vehicles, construction equipment, agricultural vehicles and boats. It is more intuitive to use than its predecessor. Furthermore, a great deal has been improved behind the scenes and the database has been updated. It now covers around 80,000 different vehicles. The makes range from A for Abarth from Italy to Z for ZX Auto from China.

“Our oil guide is particularly useful, because it covers more than just engine oils and we are also able to offer all of these liquids,” says Günter Hiermaier. “Such a broad range of automotive chemicals makes LIQUI MOLY unique.”

INTERMOT customized continues its impressive development–
217 suppliers and customizers from the Harley and New Heritage scene

INTERMOT 2018 was a great success, repeating the record result of the previous event. Around 220,000 trade visitors and motorbike fans from almost 100 countries gathered from 3 to 7 October 2018 to explore what 1,041 suppliers from 40 countries had to offer. An important factor in the success of INTERMOT 2018 was the “Customizing” segment, which grew significantly in its second edition and was noticeably more international. In Hall 10.1, 217 suppliers and customizers from Germany and abroad exhibited everything a customizer’s heart could desire: amazing custom-builds, accessories and clothing of the highest quality, and of course the exceptional creative figures behind the products.

According to a representative survey, 70 per cent of INTERMOT attendees also visited INTERMOT customized, i.e. around 150,000 visitors flocked to Hall 10.1. The survey also revealed that 77 per cent of trade fair visitors were very satisfied with what the exhibition had to offer here and the appropriate presentation style, including special features such as the barber and tattoo studios.

Once again this year, the AMD World Championship of Custom Bike Building, which is hosted in Cologne every second year and which set a new record with 107 registered bikes taking part, was the main highlight and a great source of amazement.

The pros showed how custom bikes are built in the trade fair’s “Garage Area”. A brand-new Ducati Scrambler 1100 was given a whole new design and modified over the five trade fair days – including peening and applying new paint in a specially built, transparent painting cubicle.

Under the motto “Schrott wird flott” (Turning scrap into speed), INTERMOT customized searched for a concept idea from the motorbike community in which a certain bike was customized in the Garage Area using parts by the LSL and Highsider companies. Niklas, the winner, gave everything over the trade fair days and learned all kinds of tips and tricks from our customizing experts Danny Schramm, Jochen Lehmann, Ute Jaeckel and the LSL boys. In the end he was delighted by his “almost” new Honda CB 450 S.

On “The Stage”, Jörg Litzenburger, well-known from Glemseck 101, interviewed the stars of the custom scene – designers, sprinters, customizers – and teased some great anecdotes out of them.

The winners of the AMD World Championship of Custom Bike Building are:

I SCRAMBLED ALL WEEK—Just barely keeping ahead of time constraints. Yesterday the list was daunting and demanded I finish some exterior wall patching or die trying. Or worse, Aubry would paint right over me.

I like that depression era green hue, but not that much. The call came from Mr. Perez and the bench aspect of my ’72 Ford truck seat was done. I could have my truck back. Parts had arrived and I could almost make the truck whole again. Aubry and I had to make another time-burning run to Home Depot.

I also wanted to get the Salt Torpedo up on it’s wheels. Jeremiah had another fight with his cool girlfriend, Honor, and went to change the keys to his apartment. I asked him to pick up a batch of Fix-all for some of the patching I couldn’t handle with the stucco patch.

A couple of hours passed. I finished the truck and cleaned the semi-stock interior. The Redhead kicked-off the California Registration process, and I finished by Cycle Source Magazine deadline. It got to be 4:00 in the afternoon when the mutts look at me with that, “Don’t forget dinner,” look. Just as I was turning toward the Salt Torpedo lift project Jeremiah and “Tileman” James showed up.

“Let me handle the patching,” Jeremiah said and went after it. James turned to me and asked about the lift. “Let’s do it,” I said and we went to work cutting the ¾-inch thick plywood to extend the lift to the front. I removed the wheel clamp and James and I measured the plywood and made the cuts, perfect. We installed the swingarm and the Metalsport Foose designed wheel.

Jeremiah finished the patching and came back to the shop to help us with wheel chalks to prevent the torpedo for rolling off the lift. I couldn’t believe it. What a magnificent day.

The day before Charles, from Strictly Hawgs, stopped over. He’s a noted Performance Bagger builder and wants to be apart of the team. He may have a steering box for us to use.

Paul Aiken, the boss of Aeromach, contacted us about piloting the Salt Torpedo. He’s just the right height and has ridden over 200 mph at the Mojave mile. Shit is happening fast, stay tuned.

And ride free forever,

–Bandit
