EDUCATIONAL BIKERNET WEEKLY NEWS for September 13, 2018

Hey,

Here’s this week’s notion and I need to have some scientific facts to confirm my assumptions.

I’ve been trying to figure out a few things for awhile. You know, we bang through life just handling shit as it comes. We take our knocks and sometime blame the problems on someone else or the other guys. In the case the EPA and the California ARB group, some guys just figured we were fucked and had to deal with it.

So let me try to put this succinctly in a twisted world. Here’s my contention: In just over 100 years innovation and freedom has tripled our life expectancy. We are healthier, safer, more secure than ever before. Vehicles are wonderful, and technology and entertainment is over the top. So, we need to congratulate ourselves, and celebrate our freedoms. We don’t need more attacks on the public, more laws against smoking, guns or motorcycles. That’s it. Why not?

Sure, we need to improve the infrastructure, but we don’t need Zero emission, zero accidents or Zero anything. Back off and celebrate our accomplishments. We don’t need to force electric technology, and fossil isn’t bad. If automated comes, okay, but we don’t need to force it on anything. Whatta ya tink?

The one thing we need more of is education and training, so folks are smart, fit and take responsibility for themselves.

CANNONBALL CROSS COUNTRY–Stage 5 from Ohio into Illinois started off with high anxiety for the intrepid travelers as they jockeyed their way through the morning commute, construction and a few miles of interstate before settling in for some mellow riding through the cornfields of America’s heartland.

Just before the lunch stop at Kersting’s Cycle Center & Museum in Winemac, Indiana, father and son riders Buck #3 and Mike Carson #15 found themselves sliding across a construction zone to end up in a ditch. The senior Carson was transported to a nearby hospital to be treated for several broken bones before being released to join his crew in Bourbannais, Illinois where there was a party in the parking lot to celebrate Buck’s birthday.

Buck is nursing his own less-serious wounds but is more concerned about the condition of his 1925 H-D. Though he was able to ride the machine in to finish out the day and keep his perfect score, the bike has a broken fork and a bit of its own road rash. Mike’s miles are done, however, since he’s looking at surgery and continued care. His 1928 H-D fared much better than he did.

In other news, everything from tire flats to mystery magneto malfunctions plagued the group and sweep trailers were once again earning their keep by transporting the disabled machines.

The sun has reappeared, which has served to elevate spirits and amp up the party vibe in the pits while crews work to get themselves and each other back between the stripes.

Tune in tomorrow as riders are hosted to lunch at Workman Harley-Davidson, Rock Falls, Illinois before rolling in for a celebratory dinner at the famous National Motorcycle Museum, in Anamosa, Iowa. So come on out, race fans, we’re anxious to share our stories and show off our proud antique motorcycles.

DAV 9/11 REPORT–This Patriot Day we’re thinking back on how September 11, 2001 mobilized a nation. Men and women across the country reacted to the attacks in New York, Pennsylvania and Virginia by joining the military.

Michael Franko, Marine veteran

“When September 11th happened and I watched the atrocities occur on that day, it just solidified the fact that I wanted to be an infantryman and lead Marines in the fight against our enemies,” said Marine veteran, Michael Franko.

While serving in Afghanistan, Franko suffered multiple injuries to his legs, hips and spine from IED blasts. He came home with PTSD and a traumatic brain injury that caused debilitating migraines.

Fortunately, a DAV national service officer was able to get Franko his benefits after getting denied by the VA the first time he submitted his claim.

Franko says, “DAV is doing an outstanding job, and after I’ve seen the work they have done for me I’m encouraging others to use DAV as their advocate for their claims.”

9/11 motivated Franko to serve his country, and DAV motivated Franko to serve his fellow veterans and become a DAV member. How about you? What motivated you to join DAV? Click here to share your story about why you became a DAV member.

NEW CONCERNS FROM THE NMA--Bicycle Idaho Stops are Not Safe for Any Road User:

Since 1982, Idaho has been the only state that has allowed bicyclists to treat stop signs as yield signs and stoplights as stop signs. No other state passed a similar law until 2017. Delaware now has a similar law on its book and the Idaho stop fever is starting to rise. Colorado passed a law in May that allows communities to decide on Idaho stops. During this year’s legislative season, five other states, (California, Minnesota, New York, Oklahoma and Utah) all attempted to write their own bicycle yield laws.

Bicycle advocates see the Idaho Stop (or Delaware Yield, etc) law codifying what they already do at stop signs and stoplights. Of course, it makes life easier for bicyclists to slow down and yield rather than come to a full stop (as it would with motorists) but when users sharing the same road play by their own different rules, traffic safety goes out the window.

Recently, there has been disruption in many major American cities with the sheer number of bike shares and with bicycle advocates calling for more. An Idaho stop law will become even more problematic for all road users, particularly if bicyclists universally believe they can use a stop sign as a yield sign and a stoplight as a stop sign regardless of state law.

On top of bike shares now comes electric scooters. Where they have been launched, riders continuously disobey safety and traffic laws.

Remember, share participants only have to sign that they will obey traffic and safety laws, but do weekend share participants really know what traffic laws are for bikes and now electric scooters?

Traffic safety is the responsibility of every road user. Many of us are, at different times, pedestrians, bicyclists, skateboarders, scooter riders, rideshare passengers, bus riders, motorcyclists and yes, even motorists. What better reason that we all abide by one common set of rules of the road? The safest road users are those who are able to anticipate what the other guy is going to do rather than react by surprise in the moment.

In 2016, the NMA embarked on Streets that Work information campaign that is ongoing. Streets That Work advocates for:
Improved road safety that is realistic, fiscally sustainable, and doesn’t feel like a government-mandated social experiment
An end to arbitrary mobility restrictions on urban streets that will decrease personal transportation options while increasing travel times.

One set of “rules of the road” for all users so that individual and shared responsibilities are clear to all Intelligent placement of bicycle paths that complement rather than displace motorized traffic.
As our sidewalks and streets become even more crowded with new modes of transportation, the principles for Streets That Work will become even more important.

This year, contact the legislators in your state house and advocate, “Shared Road, Shared Rules and Responsibilities.” This is the best and safest course for all road users.

STORM WARNING DIRECT FROM THE WHITE HOUSE–A message from President Trump on Hurricane Florence

This week, three major storms threaten American communities across an area spanning nearly 5,000 miles: Hurricane Florence (the Southeastern coast), Tropical Storm Olivia (Hawaii), and Tropical Storm Isaac (the Caribbean).

Hurricane Florence in particular poses a catastrophic threat to millions living in North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, and Virginia. The storm is expected to produce total rainfall of 20 to 30 inches, with isolated amounts up to 40 inches. “These numbers are hard to comprehend, but based on past experience, this amount of rain produces life-threatening, catastrophic flooding,” the National Weather Service tweeted.

President Donald J. Trump met with Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen, FEMA Administrator Brock Long, and other senior officials yesterday in the Oval Office to discuss preparations. “Hurricane Florence is setting out to be a devastating event,” Administrator Long said, comparing its potential to Hurricane Hugo in 1989.

The Administration is focused on helping state leaders and the general public alike before, during, and after the storm makes landfall. “We’re supporting the governors with achieving their life safety evacuation and movements,” Administrator Long said. “We’re focused on mass care and sheltering. And then we’ll be focused on helping them to execute their response and recovery goals.”

Earlier this week, President Trump approved emergency declarations for South Carolina, North Carolina, and Virginia. “I’ve spoken with the governors,” President Trump said yesterday. “They’re prepared. We’re prepared.”

To all Americans in the path of these storms: Be safe, be ready, and follow the advice of local officials.

A video message from President Trump: Hurricane Florence is fast approaching.

AMA National and Regional News--The AMA has adopted an official position statement on automated vehicles that calls on government agencies and elected officials to include motorcyclists in the ongoing discussion, planning and implementation of the policies and regulations governing the rollout of automated vehicles.

The position statement was adopted July 31 by the AMA Board of Directors. “Failure to specifically address motorcycles in statutory and regulatory language amounts to the abandonment of motorcycle safety by legislators and regulators,” the position statement reads. “Essentially, the issue of distracted and inattentive driving will mushroom into a monumental hazard for motorcyclists when flawed AV technology enters the transportation mainstream.” AMA President and CEO Rob Dingman said the position statement emerged from the organization’s ongoing involvement in this crucial issue and reinforces the organization’s commitment to motorcyclist safety.

The AMA recognizes that some features being developed and tested may result in a reduction in the number of crashes and injuries involving motorcyclists. However, no mandate is in place to require motorcyclists are included in the discussion or that motorcycles be specifically addressed during development of detection devices and software development. The full text of the “Automated Vehicles and the Safety of Motorcyclists” position statement is available at www.americanmotorcyclist.com/About-The-AMA/automated-vehicles-and-the-safety-of-motorcyclists.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – A bipartisan group of 39 senators is urging the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency to increase volume obligations for biomass-based diesel and advanced biofuel, and ensure any small refinery exemptions are accounted for in its final rule setting for renewable volume obligations under the Renewable Fuel Standard.

The EPA’s June 2018 RVO proposal would raise the biomass-based diesel volume for 2020 to 2.43 billion gallons and increase the advanced biofuel volume for 2019 to 4.88 billion gallons. The AMA objects to any additional ethanol in the nation’s fuel supply, because it would increase the risk of inadvertently misfueling motorcycles and ATVs, which are not EPA-approved for ethanol blends of more than 10 percent by volume. For a list of the senators who signed this letter, visit www.ernst.senate.gov/public/index.cfm/press-releases?ID=DF44278D-5AA3-4795-9CB2-FE9830770F95.

State News

LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – The Tahoe National Forest is looking for volunteers to help improve one of the forest’s most challenging motorcycle trails. The “Loop 6” motorcycle trail, located south/southeast of the Foresthill Divide Road near China Wall staging area is on the American River Ranger District.

Motorcycle trails normally have three difficulty levels that are a part of the Tahoe National Forest’s recreational trail system. They range from “Easy Trail” designation, with a solid green circle, to “Difficult Trail” designation, with a solid black diamond to identify the trail. A solid black diamond trail is the most difficult and has routes with rocky surfaces, sharp turns, switch backs, steep grades, narrow passages, low overhangs, ledges and large rocks.

The 18-mile Loop 6 is a Black Diamond Trail. This trail/loop needs work in many locations due to its steep, narrow design. The work includes general maintenance, such as corridor cutting and tread work, as well as heavy maintenance, such as drainage work, rock armoring, and sustainable re-alignment.

Grant-funded work began early in 2018 to address the problem areas of the trail. Volunteers from the motorcycle trail riding community are strongly encouraged to help with trail work when they can. This project will begin early October and continue through November. Interested volunteers should contact Matt Brownlee at the American River Ranger Station, (530) 367-2224, ext. 228.

SAUK COUNTY, Wis. – ATV and UTV riders are trying to convince the Sauk County County Board to allow them to use local roads as ATV routes, according to a report at www.wiscnews.com. Owners of restaurants and bars along the routes back the idea. But some residents are worried about safety and noise.

Filipino villagers, including women and children, lined up to receive the boxes of goods from the riders, who navigated the muddy roads to reach the settlements.

Some of the riders also went door-to-door to deliver the relief goods, the story said. Monsoon rains caused by tropical storm Yagi on Aug. 11 led to flooding in Metro Manila and neighboring provinces. According to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council, the floods displaced more than a million people. More than 54,000 were placed in shelters set up across the country.

TEXAS BROTHER TURNS IN HIS BAGGER–So the Big Black Bagger has gone back to the thrives at Harley-Davidson Financial Services! Part is my bad, not the interest rate, that I knew and accepted. However, in close to 3 years I’ve paid barely 3g to principal, instead of closer to 8g in fees and interest.

Seems HDFS likes to take the entire payment and apply it to just interest. Once I went paperless I didn’t pay any attention, it was supposed to be a retirement bike.

If you type in HDFS loans in Google there are numerous stories about HDFS and it’s shady business dealings! Several mentioned south Texas and one went farther and even mentioned a dealership in Houston, just not the name. But I’m pretty sure I know who!

I checked with the state AG and there are complaints, but it’s not illegal, just shady. Thing is I’d have never done it through some other financial service, who knew HDFS was the sleazy one on the block?

If only Greg at MC Creations would have gotten that little white Evo FXR in a month earlier and he would have given me a cop fairing and extra sheet metal too!

So anyway, I took her to all her favorite roads, average speeds 85-115 a couple weeks ago, but ended up having to ride her to the stealership the following weekend.

Plus, I’ve been shooting a lot of concerts and dealing with family stuff, so the Shovel decided to remind me why we don’t ride in shorts, even around the hood to charge the battery some yesterday, before we went for a real ride.

NEWS FROM THE MOTORCYCLE PROFILING PROJECT–After Media Pressure Sheriff Agrees to Address Motorcycle Profiling

As reported by the MPP, the New Mexico Motorcyclists Rights Organization (NMMRO) sent a letter to the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO) on July 7th, requesting a meeting to discuss motorcycle profiling due to an increase in reported incidents. Despite the professionalism displayed by the NMMRO, these requests were ignored for over a month. But then these requests received media exposure, first through the MPP’s grassroots networking and then mainstream coverage. The pressure resulting from this exposure caused the BCSO to agree to a meeting with the NMMRO, which resulted in an agreement by the Sheriff to seriously address incidents of motorcycle profiling.

The NMMRO- An example of effectiveness.

Annette Torrez and Raymond Gallegos, chair and co-chair, along with the board of directors of the NMMRO, are examples of effective activists implementing proven methods for advancing motorcyclists rights. The NMMRO has taken the unique approach of attempting to dialogue with law enforcement related to the profiling phenomenon. And to get authorities to the table, the NMMRO is using a combination off grassroots and mainstream media pressure.

After drafting and sending the letter to the BCSO, Torrez contacted the MPP requesting coverage. On August 14th, 2018 the MPP published the NMMRO’s story on motorcycleprofilingproject.com in an attempt to provide exposure. With over 20,0000 followers, the story spread quickly. Two days later powerful mainstream media outlet KRQE Channel 13 also reported on the story and even called the BCSO inquiring about why no meeting had been scheduled. The BCSO quickly agreed to a meeting on August 22nd, and even guaranteed the Sheriff’s presence.

Sheriff Agrees to Seriously Address Profiling Concerns

On August 22nd, the NMMRO Board met with representatives of the BCSO, including Sheriff Gonzales. The results were positive. The Sheriff agreed to increased education and awareness of motorcycle profiling stops in addition to agreeing to seriously address future stops. As reported on the NMMRO’s Facebook page:

“We are very pleased to let you know that we were finally able to meet with the Bernalillo County Sheriff, along with several members of his command staff. This meeting was very productive and we feel that our community concerns were heard and received well. We also received a personal commitment from Sheriff Gonzales, that any reports we bring to his office in regards to profiling and discrimination, will be seriously investigated and addressed. In meeting overtime, they shared a serious interest in supporting our efforts in addressing motorcycle safety awareness and rider education.”

Torrez further explained to the MPP:

“The captain in charge of traffic came in late due to a swat situation. Now he was receptive to our concerns and said we was going to educate his officers on unconstitutional stops.”

Media Exposure And The Fight Against Profiling

The combination of grassroots and mainstream exposure is a proven method for moving rights issues forward. Many times the biggest challenge is exposure. The MPP provides an outlet for grassroots exposure that has not previously existed for motorcyclists involved in the rights movement. And as the MPP grows, so does the ability to penetrate mainstream media sources.

Torrez comments on the MPP’s Facebook Page:

The whole purpose of a free press is to provide a source of accountability through public exposure and public pressure. Grassroots media has gained power through new technology and cannot be controlled like mainstream media sources can. And getting grassroots messaging reported in the mainstream provides a movement’s message maximum exposure without the traditional risk of not being able to control the language of the debate.

–By David “Double D” Devereaux, the Spokesperson for the Washington State Council of Clubs, Founder of the Motorcycle Profiling Project, and works with motorcyclists at the national level.

LATEST NEW PRODUCT FROM S&S- – S&S Grand National and Slash Cut Slip Ons for M8 H-D Softail Models

S&S Cycle has been on the gas for six decades, with the last handful of years heavily focused on high performance exhaust systems. Their popular Grand National muffler line recently grew to include the latest generation of H-D Softail models and they are now adding a lower dollar slash cut version as well. Why is an S&S slip on better?

We asked the same question and they showed us their elaborate array of dynos, data acquisition tools and emissions lab. Add to that they insist on including a removable dB reducer baffle with every muffler (everyone else charges extra).

We like that almost as much as we do the legitimate v-twin exhaust note and healthy bump in Hp and torque (91Hp and 113lb/ft!). Available in show chrome or ceramic coated black for 2018-19 HD® Street Bob®, Low Rider®, Softail Slim®, Deluxe, Breakout®, Fat Boy® and Heritage® Classic.

FROM THE GEARHEAD DIARIES–After dropping off the Bell of the Belle of the Ball, mantel piece and blowing the head gasket on my old truck last month. It reminded me of another story. I will try to make this one short.

My brother TJ, my wife and I were going to a motorcycle trip to June Lake. We stopped here and there along the way and in the process of climbing the grade to the lake, I blew the head-gasket in the rear cylinder.

At a chug-chug pace up the hill, we finally got there . TJ asked, “What you gonna do brother?” I have heard that somewhere before, oh well.

I told him I’ll vacation now and worry about it at the end of the weekend. He ran my wife back and forth to the showers. We went down to the lake and ate food from our packs.

Come down to the end of the week end a park ranger offered me a ride back in his truck, along with my bike. We stripped it of liquids, gave away the double sleeping bag and tied down on in his truck.

We got my wife on a bus out of Fresno and TJ took off to Redwood City for his wife (she don’t ride too much) and all were on their way.

God ‘s got a way of making things work out. Got home took the ranger out to my favorite Mexican food joint in Torrance, picked my wife up at the bus depot downtown and all is good with the world.

QUICK, FROM THE BIKERNET SPORTS DEPARTMENT–The Washington Redskins finally drop offensive name

Dan Snyder, owner of the NFL Redskins, has announced that the team is dropping “Washington” from the team name, and it will henceforth be simply known as, “The Redskins.”

It was reported that he finds the word “Washington” imparts a negative image of poor leadership, mismanagement,
corruption, cheating, lying, and graft, and is not a fitting role model for young fans of football.

Aussie Biker News–
New powers for NSW cops to search clubhouses

New South Wales (NSW) is the largest Australian state and now the NSW government says cops will have enhanced powers to search motorcycle club premises and will be clearly backed by legislation to search anyone on site.

New laws announced yesterday will make it easier for NSW cops to ‘tackle organised crime’ during raids on outlaw motorcycle club premises, the government believes.

It’s believed the changes have been hurriedly put together after a judge recently queried the legality of a search warrant and subsequent procedures executed by the Raptor taskforce when ‘turning over’ an alleged clubhouse. .

Under the changes, police will be clearly backed by law to search anyone on the site, compel anyone to reveal their name and address, and make anyone at the clubhouse move on.

It comes after an Ombudsman report said police needed more clarity about their powers when raiding clubhouses.

In 2016, the report found that while police could search declared premises at any time without a warrant, they were not doing so.

“Our report found that the amendments have not enhanced police’s ability to disrupt OMCGs or detect firearms,” the report said.

“Police did not obtain any restricted premises declarations, conduct searches without warrant or lay charges for any of the new offence(s) during the review period.”

Attorney-General Mark Speakman said the government had accepted all the Ombudsman’s recommendations “which will give police greater clarity about their powers and responsibilities when raiding outlaw bikie gang clubhouses”.

Police Minister Troy Grant said the reforms would help police identify suspects, gather evidence and seize dangerous firearms and weapons.

“In the past, we’ve used council and other regulation to close these clubhouses down, and we’ve used other types of power to get onto premises,”

“This new legislation allows us … to go in confidently, take control of the scene, and get to the bottom of the facts of what’s happening in that clubhouse.”

“If people don’t provide their details or don’t move on when requested they could face jail time”.

“There is no room in NSW for outlaw bikies, who will continue to be hounded by the police until they leave the state or find a new, legal hobby,” he said.

The new laws will be introduced to parliament within weeks.

Fuller said Strike Force Raptor had “dismantled numerous bikie-led drug and organised crime operations” and “is continuing to crack down on outlaw bikie violence”.

Speakman said the powers may be used at premises that are not clubhouses but only if a search warrant has been granted.

SCOOTERS OUTRUN LAW–I just zipped down a city street on an electric scooter. It cost me 15 cents a minute. Fast and fun!
My scooter was just lying on the ground. I picked it up, activated it with my phone and rode away. When I was done, I simply abandoned it.

Won’t it be stolen? No, because you need an app to activate the scooter and a GPS device keeps track of it.

My wife loves using the newish Citi Bike shared bicycles that are locked in a big dock near our apartment. They were a good innovation.

But then entrepreneurs came up with “dockless” bikes. They’re even better.
Better still are these shared scooters. They’re small, flexible, cheap and convenient. Maybe these scooters will be the next revolution in urban transit!

But politicians may kill them off before we get a chance to find out how useful they are.
Some places have already banned the scooters. San Francisco said they “endanger public health and safety.” City attorney Dennis Herrera complained about “broken bones, bruises, and near misses.”

Sigh. Yet San Francisco also complains about not having enough transportation options.

In San Francisco and other cities, scooter companies tried doing what Uber and Airbnb did: They dodged destructive regulation by simply putting their services out on the street, hoping that by the time sleepy regulators noticed them, they would be too popular to ban.

That worked for Uber and Airbnb. We consumers got cool new ways to travel and alternatives to hotels, and investors got rich — all because they didn’t ask for permission. Permissionless innovation brings good things.

But flying under the radar is harder for scooter companies. Scooters on sidewalks are very visible.

“Unfortunately,” Mercatus Center tech policy analyst Jennifer Skees told me for my latest video, “cities haven’t learned from their experiences with companies like Uber and Airbnb. They want innovators to come ask for permission and go through the regulatory processes.”

But the “regulatory processes” take years. “That prevents consumers from accessing a transportation option that could be accessible now!” said Skees.

After a four-month ban, San Francisco granted permits to two small scooter companies. The politicians stiffed Lime and Bird, the innovators that started the business — presumably because they didn’t kiss the politicians’ rings and beg for permission first.

Still, even I acknowledge that there may be a role for government here. A public square needs some rules. Scooters, especially speedy electric scooters, can be dangerous.
“We haven’t seen a large number of accidents or injuries,” says Skees. “We don’t ban bicycles because somebody might get hurt. … Social norms (like hand signals) will evolve.”

Whenever there’s something new, the media hype the problems. The L.A. Times reports that some people hate the scooters so much that they “have been crammed into toilets, tossed off balconies and set on fire.” Internet videos show scooters abandoned in the Pacific Ocean.

But scooter companies say the vandalism isn’t so bad.

“It’s a low percentage,” said Lime’s Maggie Gendron. In one city, “we had 10,000 rides and 18 vandalism complaints.”

I wanted to try out scooters in my state, New York, but I couldn’t, because craven politicians who claim to represent me banned scooters.

So I took our camera crews to a city that’s been more reasonable.
Oddly, that’s a place that overregulates most everything: Washington, D.C. But the capital embraced scooters.

So, the district has transportation that is green and good exercise and takes up less space than cars.

Maybe politicians will find it in their hearts to leave scooters, their makers and customers alone.

One innovation can make many others possible.

Cars take people to jobs they couldn’t do in their own neighborhoods, allowing them to collaborate with people they might never have met if they walked or rode horses.
Planes, trains and ships bring down costs by allowing inventors to use exotic materials they can’t find in their own back yards.
If any of those forms of transportation had been crushed by regulation, we’d never know how many benefits we’d lost.

Don’t kill scooters. Let’s see where they take us.

The HIVE Gallery Presents “SEXY BEAST”–Over 80 Artists, Curated By Elizabeth Rowin
August 4th, 2018 – September 2nd, 2018
The HIVE Gallery 729 S. Spring St. LA, CA. 90014

Shortly after Laluzapalooza 32 in 2018 I was contacted by Elizabeth Rowin and asked if I would be interested in a themed show she was curating; “Sexy Beast”.

It has proved to be an awesome experience. Although two of the four concepts I gave (for her selection process) have metaphorical elements of my current series of work, two were completely void of any existing iconography I have been working with. I have had a great time working with some colors and images I haven’t experimented with before.

NEWS FROM THE CLIMATE DEPOT– Washington Post – Donald Complicit With Florence

The Washington Post says Florence will be the first category 4 hurricane to hit the Carolinas, and it is President Trump’s fault. They also say there is no reasonable doubt (evil) humans are priming the Earth for disasters.

If Trump cares about Hurricane Florence, his policies don’t show it – The Washington Post

As is almost always the case, the fake news Washington Post is simply making up fake facts. The east coast was hit by three major hurricanes in 1954, including the last two to hit New England (Carol and Edna.) The third major hurricane of 1954 (Hazel) was a category 4, which made landfall at the North/South Carolina border, and then wreaked havoc all the way up into Canada where it killed more than 100 people. Hazel was Canada’s deadliest hurricane.

According to Roger Pielke Jr., east coast major hurricanes are down more than 60% over the past 50 years.

The US is just coming off the longest hurricane drought on record.

BIKERNET BOOK OF THE WEEK CLUB–BIKERNET.COM BOOK RECOMMENDATION

I was thinking about life primarily because my 39th birthday this month or any of the previous birthdays make me very uneasy of not being what I imagined myself to be 20 or 30 birthdays ago. I don’t know if it will help anyone but you should read this one fiction novel.

My book review for Wind in the Willows from 2008 on Amazon.com is below. I mean its been more than 10 years since I wrote that review and still strangely haven’t taken my own advice / interpretation. It’s like wanting to do-over the past and being stuck at that impossibility all the while my present is becoming that past impossibility that I will never be able to do better at.

The Wind In The Willows by Kenneth Grahame

In neat small 12 chapters comprising a 192 page book “The Wind in the Willows” speaks more than voluminous epics. The characters are animals as if in a fable. The introduction includes the letter from President Roosevelt on how he didn’t find appeal in what seems like a children’s fiction. Then as the President’s family found truth in the novel so did he and wrote off a letter of appreciation to the author, Kenneth Grahame, knowing what he could have missed.

The book may seem apt for kids but has fascinating events true to all in society. The resourceful Rat, pleasant Mole, wise Badger and primarily the cocky, arrogant, conceited Toad of Toad Hall bring lessons of Life to us all. The chapters neatly alternate soon into the peaceful acts of rat and mole to the adventures of disaster-prone toad. There are moments each one of us can relate to. The mole discovering a new world by the river-side, a loyal friendship with the experienced water rat, the advice and guardianship with badger and foolishness & misadventures of toad.

The rat is my hero. Knowing what to do when he mentors and grooms the mole. The badger ever welcoming his friends in need while also preferring his solitude and reclusiveness. The other small animals whom they deal with also come out to colour a world we could recognise as our own.

The toad is rich heir and a spoilt one with his fads bringing him infamy and disrepute to his well-wishing friends. But rat, mole and badger who was a friend of toad’s father never give-up on assisting the hapless, cunning toad learn to live with dignity that he prides himself upon.

The toad’s new fixation of the motor-car and his eminent jail-term does little to reform his stupid character. It also reflects on how change of times bring new things in our life we never needed but crave for anyway.

There is also the mysterious angel of the forest whom the water rat and mole encounter in the woods, sort of how we think gratefully of a watchful all-saving entity who would tend to lost souls in our concrete jungle.

The chapter `The Piper at the Gates of Dawn’ describes, nay, illustrates this event of divine intervention beautifully. Through many seasons the animals persist in being jolly and industrious.

The chapters where some leave the winter for seeking the South also talks of how we deal with change. The rat has his moment of weakness too when he wants to heed the call to adventure away from his beloved river-bed but his wonderful friend mole helps him as he was helped by rat on more than one occasion. The strong, determined badger too yearns at one point for his footloose son but his friends stand with him.

This saga of friendship and relationships continues to the grand climax where the carefree toad has to regain his Toad Hall from squatters. The battle is glorious and not without bearing fruit in the form of a reformed toad. A happy ending but a good beginning to taking life head-on with purpose and love for without company of good friends our days would pass without knowledge of how blessed we really are.

LIQUI MOLY– remains the most popular oil for commercial vehicles

The readers of German trade journal “Profi Werkstatt” choose LIQUI MOLY once again

oil and additive specialist LIQUI MOLY adds another title. The company was awarded “Best Profi Werkstatt brand” in the oil and lubricant category at the Automechanika trade fair in Germany. In so doing, the automotive chemical specialist defended its leading position by gaining its third readers’ choice award from a Huss publication.

“Third selection, third victory – it doesn’t get any better,” says Peter Baumann, getting right to the point. He is responsible for LIQUI MOLY marketing globally and accepted the award for “Best Profi-Werkstatt brand” at Automechanika. The most important trade fair in the wear and repair sector takes place in Frankfurt every two years. Since 2014 Huss publications has asked the readers of its specialist publication Profi Werkstatt to vote and uses the event to host its award ceremony. LIQUI MOLY has been part and parcel of the prize list since then.

This year alone, the lubricant specialist has won seven readers’ choice awards, including those of the largest German automotive magazines. But nothing is taken for granted: “Each year we are excited to see if we can defend our title,” the Marketing Director explains. “In the end, this is an honor for the entire LIQUI MOLY team because everyone contributed to make it a success.”

And the result is very important to LIQUI MOLY because the voters take cars and commercial vehicles very seriously and really identify with the issues.

There were more than 200 brands to choose from in 22 categories. In total over 20,000 votes were cast. This range highlights the role that brand plays in the purchase decision. Peter Baumann: “It gives orientation, adds an emotional benefit to product selection and builds trust.”

THE BIKERNET BAD JOKE LIBRARY IS STILL OPEN– The reason Mayberry was so peaceful and quiet was because nobody was married. Andy, Aunt Bea, Barney, Floyd, Howard, Goober, Gomer, Sam, Earnest T Bass, Helen, Thelma Lou, Clara and, of course, Opie were all single. The only married person was Otis, and he stayed drunk.

Think about that for a minute. Authoring a bill often means restrictions in a free society, unless it’s a repeal. Why the hell would anyone want to do that, unless it meant more power for them?

Whatever, let’s party. I’m about to publish our easy to read Global Warming fact sheet. Even the expert confirmed it. We are also about to reveal the RSD mods to the Evel record braking Indians.
