STRANGE TIMES BIKERNET WEEKLY NEWS for July 20, 2017

Hey,

We live in strange times, but actually it’s all good—sorta. For years we’ve been told the whole safety mantra thing and save the planet, control-freak bullshit. At least someone is shacking the trees and giving freedom a chance.

Without freedom we don’t have anything. It’s all so interesting. But without the ability to question and push for understanding and freedom we might as well lock ourselves in caves and turn out the lights. I don’t know about you, but I’m going to ride free and party till the end.

The Bikernet Weekly News is sponsored in part by companies who also dig Freedom including: Cycle Source Magazine, the MRF, Las Vegas Bikefest, Iron Trader News, ChopperTown and BorntoRide.com, Sturgis Museum.

Let’s hit the news:

Harley-Davidson to cut jobs after sales sputter–

Americans are hitting the brakes on new motorcycles from the country’s best-known maker.

Harley-Davidson warned Tuesday its full-year bike sales and profit margins would fall well short of expectations, concerning investors already fretting about the industry’s struggles to draw in Millennials.

The manufacturer also plans to cut jobs to compensate for the disappointing sales, though the number of positions wasn’t immediately clear. Harley said its full-year shipment of motorcycles to dealers would fall by 6% to 8% from last year, marking a sharp decline from its previous projection of “flat to down modestly.”

The new projection includes a 10% to 20% decline in the third quarter, as well as a full percentage- point drop in operating profit margin for the full year.
Harley CEO Matt Levatich told analysts the company would slash hourly jobs at “some of our U.S. manufacturing plants” beginning immediately. A spokesperson declined to comment on how many jobs would be lost.

Levatich said the company’s innovative 2018 model-year motorcycles would provide a lift. But investors are concerned that Millennials aren’t interested in the “hog” lifestyle that energized previous generations. Levatich said Millennials were buying used bikes in encouraging numbers, but the company must persuade them to buy new.

The dour outlook comes amid speculation that Harley is weighing a $1.7 billion acquisition of rival motorcycle maker Ducati. With sales slumping, the company could face increased urgency to get a deal done because Ducati sales are up 13% over the past two years, according to UBS.

For Harley, second-quarter revenue fell 4.8% to $1.77 billion and net income declined 7.7% to $258.9 million, compared with the same period last year. Global sales declined 6.7% to 81,388. That included a 9.3% decline in the critical U.S. market, where the company sold 49,668 units.

Plenty of Millennials ride motorcycles.
Money is tight and there are some really good deals on used motorcycles.
This is more about money than who rides.

VIETNAM TO BAN MOTORCYCLES IN CAPITAL CITY–

The city of Hanoi, capital of Vietnam, has over 7.5 million inhabitants, and between them these citizens own more than 5 million motorcycles and half a million cars.

In addition to the city progressively developing public transportation and banning certain vehicles from certain locations at certain times to combat congestion and pollution, Hanoi has stated intentions to ban all motorcycles in 2030.

CHAIN DRAGON SUNDAY POST for July 16, 2017

“The more corrupt the state, the more numerous the laws.” Tacitus, Roman senator before the fall of Rome

I can’t believe the litigious society that America is.

You need permission and payments to government and society to paint your own goddamned building?

Don’t you already pay Property Tax on the building?

Where is the freedom of speech if you can’t paint your own building in whatever shade of pink or black you want ?

If I was a lawyer I would sue the city for telling me what I can paint on my building wall.

It is not as if you are painting a mural of two Congressmen having kinky sex. Who the hell is the city or society to decide what I paint on my petrol tank or car or building or if I tattoo my own face calling the Municipal Commissioner an asshole=======”The more corrupt the state, the more numerous the laws.” – Tacitus – Roman senator before the fall of Rome

IRON HORSE SALOON–
Hosting Grease & Gears Garage Round Two!
Industry leading builders and craftsmen to hold live demonstrations throughout the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally for the second year in 2017.

Sturgis, SD July 2017 :Last year Cycle Source Magazine and the Iron Horse Saloon launched a brand-new type of rally entertainment, the Grease & Gears Garage. Over a six day span some two dozen individual builders from the custom motorcycle industry took the stage to present to onlookers the nuts and bolts of what they do. Segments on welding, suspension, frame building and working the tools in a fabrication shop were all played out in front of the entire crowd at the Iron Horse Saloon but also to the world audience via FaceBook Live.

After such a huge success at both the Sturgis Rally in 2016 and the Republic of Texas Rally this year, Grease & Gears is running once again. Rally goers can see some of the top builders and craftsmen doing their thing, up close and personal, while answering any questions about how it’s done.

To give you an idea of the incredible talent that’s been lined up for you this year, you can expect to see the likes of Billy Lane of Choppers Inc. working on a Sons of Speed Chassis, Will Ramsey of Faith Forgotten Choppers jig up a custom frame and build a one of a kind springer front end. RJ Powel of Cutting Edge Customs will bend handlebars and speed hole a custom fender.

Xavier Muriel will show you how to properly align your drivetrain in a custom build using an S&S Motor and Baker Tranny. Tom Keefer of Franklin Church Choppers will give us all an education on the S&S family of carbs and demonstrate the rebuilding of the E and G models, live on stage.

These one to three-hour demonstrations will be scheduled daily throughout the week beginning Sunday, August 6 through Friday August 11. Each performance will be interactive and allow for Q&A from the audiences on site and FaceBook Live via Cycle Source Magazine’s page.

Additionally, there will be live interviews with some of the industries greats like Sugar Bear, Mondo Porras and Steve Massicotte of Paughco. There won’t be a bad seat in the house as monitors located on both sides of the stage will carry a live video feed and capture the up- close action.

There are more seminars and names being added to the lineup daily. Information will be available at www.cyclesource.com or www.ihsturgis.com. If you or your company would like to participate in a demonstration please contact Heather at cyclesourcemain@comcast.net.

QUICK, OPEN THE BIKERNET BAD JOKE LIBRARY– Ralph and Edna were both patients in a mental hospital. One day while they were walking past the hospital swimming pool, Ralph suddenly jumped into the deep end. He sank to the bottom of the pool and stayed there.

Edna promptly jumped in to save him. She swam to the bottom and pulled him out. When the Head Nurse Director became aware of Edna’s heroic act she immediately ordered her to be discharged from the hospital as she now considered her to be mentally stable.

When she went to tell Edna the news she said, ‘Edna, I have good news and bad news.

The good news is you’re being discharged since you were able to rationally respond to a crisis by jumping in and saving the life of the person you love… I have concluded that your act displays sound mindedness.

The bad news is, Ralph hung himself in the bathroom with his bathrobe belt right after you saved him. I am so sorry, but he’s dead.

Edna replied, ‘He didn’t hang himself, I put him there to dry.

How soon can I go home?’

Authorities say Sally is also suspected in the deaths of two bikers in nearby La Grange Ga and the Saturday death of another Biker in Phenix City, Alabama.

Agencies in Georgia and Alabama are working together on the search for the suspect.

Only thing these bikers had in common was the fact that they rode Harley-Davidson brand motorcycles and were bald.

If anyone has any information please call 911, do not try to confront her, she is Armed and dangerous and was last seen eating Vienna Sausages.

GREEN ALERT,
Nevada marijuana supply running low, state of emergency declared, governor says– Nevada state officials declared a state of emergency after stores that sell recreational marijuana reported that their supply is running out just less than two weeks after the drug went on sale legally.

Gov. Brian Sandoval, R-Nev., issued the state of emergency on Friday, which will allow state officials to decide on new rules that could ease the shortage of marijuana, according to Fox 13 Now.

Nevada’s Department of Taxation released a statement that said it will contemplate emergency regulations that would permit liquor wholesalers to cash in on the marijuana sales.

“Based on reports of adult-use marijuana sales already far exceeding the industry’s expectations at the state’s 47 licensed retail marijuana stores and the reality that many stores are running out of inventory, the Department must address the lack of distributors immediately,” the Department of Taxation said in a statement. “Some establishments report the need for delivery within the next several days.”

In November, after the law legalizing marijuana in Nevada was passed, liquor distributors were promised that they would have the sole rights of moving the drug for 18 months, but the department said many distributors did not meet the requirements needed in order to be licensed.

In this Saturday, July 1, 2017, photo, people line up at the NuLeaf marijuana dispensary in Las Vegas. Recreational marijuana sales have exceeded the expectations of Las Vegas area store owners, who have seen long lines outside their dispensaries since Saturday, when Nevada became the fifth state with shops selling pot to the public. (AP Photo/John Locher)Expand /

The legal selling of recreational marijuana in Nevada went into effect on Saturday, July 1, 2017. (AP)
“We continue to work with the liquor wholesalers who have applied for distribution licenses, but most don’t yet meet the requirements that would allow us to license them. Even as we attempted to schedule the final facility inspection for one of the applicants this week, they told us their facility was not ready and declined the inspection. As of mid-day Friday, not one distribution license has been issued,” Stephanie Klapstein, a spokesperson for the Department of Taxation, told USA Today.

To buy, those 21 and older with a valid ID and purchase up to an ounce of pot at dispensaries. The drug can only be consumed in a private home, not in public, including the Strip, hotels and casinos. Violators face a misdemeanor citation and $600 fine.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

GOVERNMENT PROBLEM OF THE WEEK–
Who died before they collected Social Security?

THE ONLY THING WRONG WITH THE GOVERNMENT’S CALCULATION OF AVAILABLE SOCIAL SECURITY IS THEY FORGOT
TO FIGURE IN THE PEOPLE WHO DIED BEFORE THEY EVER COLLECTED A SOCIAL SECURITY CHECK!!!

WHERE DID THAT MONEY GO?

Remember, not only did you and I contribute to Social Security but your employer did, too. It totaled 15% of your income before taxes.

If you averaged only $30K over your working life, that’s close to$220,500.
Read that again.

Did you see where the Government paid in one single penny? We are talking about the money you and your employer put in a Government bank to insure you and me that we would have a retirement check from the money we put in, not the Government.

Now they are calling the money we put in an ‘ENTITLEMENT’ when we reach the age to take it back. If you calculate the future invested value of $4,500 per year (yours & your employer’s contribution) at a simple 5% interest (less than what the Government pays on the money that it borrows).

After 49 years of working you’d have $892,919.98. If you took out only 3% per year, you’d receive $26,787.60 per year and it would last better than 30 years (until you’re 95 if you retire at age 65) and that’s with no interest paid on that final amount on deposit! If you bought an annuity and it paid 4% per year, you’d have a lifetime income of $2,976.40 per month.

THE FOLKS IN WASHINGTON HAVE PULLED OFF A BIGGER PONZI SCHEME THAN BERNIE MADOFF EVER DID.

Entitlement my foot; I paid cash for my social security insurance! Just because they borrowed the money for other government spending, doesn’t make my benefits some kind of charity or handout!!

Remember the benefits for members of Congress?
+ free healthcare,
+ outrageous retirement packages,
+ 67 paid holidays,
+ three weeks paid vacation,
+ unlimited paid sick days.

Now that’s welfare, and they have the nerve to call my social security retirement payments entitlements?

They call Social Security and Medicare an entitlement even though most of us have been paying for it all our working lives, and now, when it’s time for us to collect, the government is running out of money. Why did the government borrow from it in the first place? It was supposed to be in a locked box, not part of the general fund.

GET THEM ON THE RECORD AS SAYING “NO”

Here is what I mean by this – don’t take this initial response as the final response. Likely, a lower level staffer wrote this – it’s a general copy and paste response. They don’t expect (nor want) you to respond. BUT YOU SHOULD. This will kick the issue up to higher level staffer (perhaps the Legislative Director) or a more Senior aide. If it were me, this is how I would respond to the message you got:

Thanks for your response, however as your constituent I am unsatisfied with this. I am asking you to co-sponsor a bi-partisan resolution. This issue is important to me and I would like a clear and firm answer as to whether you will or will not cosponsor this resolution. The resolution is bipartisan, apolitical, and positive in nature and most importantly, it is important to me and ALL of the motorcycle riders in your state who show up to vote.

Bottom line – don’t take the initial response as a final answer…like all good things in life, we’ll have to work a little to get what we want.
-Megan

Senator Heitkamp is aware of SR 154, but “I will keep your thoughts in mind should the Senate consider legislation.“ No commitment to cosponsor.

Tom Birkholz
ND MRF Rep.

Dear Tom:

Thank you for contacting me regarding motorcycle profiling. It was good to hear from you.

I appreciate hearing your support for the S.Res.154 introduced by Senator Johnson (R-WI) on May 4, which would promote awareness of motorcycle profiling and encourage collaboration and communication with the motorcycle community and law enforcement officials to prevent instances of profiling. I understand the vast majority of motorcyclists are law-abiding citizens, and many play an active role in our communities by organizing charity and volunteer events.

It is important that all Americans – including motorcyclists – receive fair treatment by our law enforcement officials, while also balancing the need for our law enforcement agencies to have the necessary tools and resources available to keep our communities safe. As you may know, in recent years, various states have passed laws aimed to protect motorcyclists and curb profiling by law enforcement officials. Please know that I will keep your thoughts in mind should the Senate consider legislation aimed at curbing motorcycle profiling.

Again, thank you for contacting me. Please do not hesitate to contact me should you have any additional questions or concerns in the future.

Sincerely,

Heidi Heitkamp

TRIKE REVIEW: Harley-Davidson Street Glide Trike

I wanted to thank you for this extremely well-written article. I just bought a used 2014 with 4500 miles on it on Friday, July 14th. The only review I had read before yours rated the trike with 1-2 stars out of 5. The only 5 was performance.

Needless to say, I was getting nervous, even though I found no fault. Your article gave me a much-needed kick in the butt to just get out and ride.

So, Thanks!

Harley-Davidson is not new to Trikes as mentioned in the article since the ServiCar is mainstay product of H-D since 1930s. Freewheeler is beautiful and ready for daily use as well as cross-country touring.

Congratulations on the ride and do write in to us at wayfarer@bikernet.com about your riding experience, photos and adventures. Go out and explore. Ride On!

And we need to give credit to Genevieve Schmidt, the Editor of Women Riders Now for the stellar article.

Ace Cafe Orlando Onboard TOP 1 ACK ATTACK– For 400 mph LSR Ride

ORLANDO, FL – The most famous motor-diner on the planet welcomed the world’s fastest motorcyclist during Ace Cafe Orlando’s world debut back in May.

Rocky Robinson, three-time motorcycle Land Speed Record holder, was on hand to give the Ace the green flag. What was kept under wraps was the fact that Ace Cafe is joining the quest for 400 mph with Rocky and the TOP 1 ACK ATTACK. The team is headed to the world’s highest salt flat in Bolivia for the Top of the World Landspeed Trial on August 3-8, 2017.

“It is go time,” says Mark McKee, CEO and Chief Gearhead of Ace Cafe North America. “As the home for all who share a passion for speed, thrills and rock ‘n roll, Rocky’s quest for 400 mph on a motorcycle is the perfect place for Ace. We are honored that Rocky is taking us along for the ride!”

“Records are made to be broken – especially Land Speed Records,” said Robinson. “The TOP 1 ACK ATTACK is headed to the Salar de Uyuni salt flats in the Andes mountains and we are going to go faster than 400 mph.” All systems are go for the twin-engine streamliner. “Bolivia has been selected because it has a much longer run up and down of more than 15 miles versus about 7 miles at Bonneville,” he explained to the crowd at the Ace.

The making of a Legend of Speed: On September 3, 2006, Rocky rode the TOP 1 ACK ATTACK to a new motorcycle land-speed record at the Bonneville Salt Flats, reaching a top speed of 342.797 mph, a whopping 20 mph faster than the previous record, which had stood since 1991. In 2007 he tried to better his speed, but crashed at speeds in excess of 320 mph and rolled 16 times!

Undaunted, Robinson returned to Bonneville in 2008 and piloted the ACK ATTACK to a second world record of 350.884 mph. On September 25, 2010, for the third time in four years, he set a new world’s record, blasting his own record to oblivion by traveling 376.363 mph.

“Conditions are even better in Bolivia than they were at the Bonneville salt flats,” said Robinson. He has spent the past month training in high elevation in the Colorado Rockies to be ready for the nearly 12,000-foot elevation of the Andes mountains.”

“Our team is honored and humbled to be part of Rocky’s quest for 400 mph,” said McKee. “Let’s rock ‘n roll.”

“TOP 1 ACK ATTACK is ready to rock, but we will skip the roll this time,” joked Robinson. Follow the TOP 1 ACK ATTACK’s the quest for 400 mph at: https://www.facebook.com/top1ackattack/

JESS THOMAS SETS SPEED RECORD
Jess Thomas hasn’t taken his helmet off. His first speed record was in Bonneville in 1956 and 1958. He was a teenager. Jess has had a fantastic career as a Road Racer, in the USA and abroad, and as a journalist he was with Cycle Magazine for over 15 years. Last Sunday, July 16th he set a record of 111.733 at the SCTA meet at El Mirage. The class is Modified Production Vintage 650cc, on a 1954 Triumph T110. The story of the project is on the “Stewards of Tradition” Facebook page. It’s pretty complicated and should be interesting to his fellow senior retired racers. Way to go Jess!

BIKERNET HOME SECURITY TECH TIP– I took down my Rebel flag (which you can’t buy on EBAY any more) and peeled the NRA sticker off my front window. I disconnected my home alarm system and quit the candy-ass Neighborhood Watch. I bought two Pakistani flags and put one at each corner of the front yard. Then I purchased the black flag of ISIS (which you CAN Buy on EBAY) and ran it up the flag pole.

Now the local police, sheriff, FBI, CIA, NSA, Homeland Security, Secret Service and other agencies are all watching my house 24/7. I’ve NEVER felt safer and I’m saving $169.95 a month that ADT used to charge me.

Plus, I bought burkas for me to wear when I shop or travel. Everyone moves out of the way, and security can’t pat me down. If they say I’m a male wearing a burka, I just say I’m feeling like a woman today. Hot Damn…Safe at last.

Justice Department Rolls Out New Policy to Seize More Money Under Asset Forfeiture–
The new directive also includes some safeguards for property owners, but civil liberties groups say they don’t go far enough.

The Justice Department, rolling back an Obama-era directive, will seize more cash and property from suspected criminals, whether or not they have been charged with a crime, Attorney General Jeff Sessions said Wednesday.

At a televised meeting with law enforcement leaders from around the country, Sessions laid out a new policy directive regarding the Justice Department’s Equitable Sharing Program, which distributes hundreds of millions of dollars a year in asset forfeiture revenue to state and local police departments.

“President Trump has directed this Department of Justice to reduce crime in this country, and we will use every lawful tool that we have to do that,” Sessions said. “We will continue to encourage civil asset forfeiture whenever appropriate in order to hit organized crime in the wallet.”

Civil asset forfeiture is a controversial practice that allows police to seize cash and property suspected of being connected to criminal activity. The property owner does not have to be convicted or even charged with a crime to have his or her property seized and forfeited by the government.

Under the equitable sharing program, federal authorities may “adopt” state and local forfeiture cases and prosecute them at the federal level. Those local police departments get to keep up to 80 percent of the forfeiture revenue, while the rest goes into the equitable sharing pool and is distributed among partner departments around the country.

RIDER TECH ALERT FROM UNCLE MONKEY–
So there you are at the traffic light and the bike sputters to a stop. For most of us it isn’t a big deal. Maybe we had been tweaking the motor, maybe it is that wiring gremlin we’ve been chasing for two years, maybe we should have stopped at that gas station two towns back.

Whatever the reason we take it in stride – part of the ride, part of the adventure.

It is those unplanned die outs that are sheer terror for new riders. Their heart jumps in their throats as they frantically jab at the start button, panic that the light will change, that the cars and trucks behind them will start honking, cursing them. With that in mind today’s report is for those new inexperienced riders out there who find themselves staled at the traffic light.

Step One –
Take a deep breath or two or three. A stalled bike happens to everyone from new riders to custom bike builders riding $100,000 bikes. The important thing to remember is:

Step Two –
Don’t panic. Really take a couple deeper breathes.

Step Three –
What happen just before the bike quit? Were you riding in traffic? Were you sitting in traffic waiting for the traffic light? Were you attempting to pull away from the light?

Step Four –
Stalling a bike while starting off is one of the most common problems and one of the harder techniques people have to learn about riding. Shift into neutral, pull in the clutch (kick stand up or down if your bike requires it) and start the bike.

If the bike does not start check that the kill switch is in the run position. Check to make sure the gas is turned on. You’d be surprised how far you can ride with the gas turned off.

Step Five –
Bikes stall out idling at a traffic light usually because of three things – gas, ass, or heat. As I mentioned in step four you’d be surprised to find that you can sometimes ride for several blocks with the gas turned off. Is the gas turned on? Is the gas turned to reserve or on?

It seems simple but some people don’t know which is which and ride full time on reserve only to find themselves on the side of the road because they have run out of gas.

If the gas is on try turning it to reserve. Sometimes gas gets stranded on the other side of the gas tank because of the tunnel in the middle.

One of my friends is an ass. When stopped at a traffic light if he notices you are preoccupied with eyeing up the girls he will reach over and hit your kill switch. Hilarity ensues. He’ll also do it while riding.

Lastly we come to heat. Motorcycles can produce a lot of heat especial air cooled bikes like Harleys. Heat can vaporize the fuel in the fuel line starving out the motor.

Heat expands metal and plastic. More than one biker has been stranded on the side of the road because the heat expands an ignition breaking contact. Once the bike cools off the part shrinks re-establishing contact.

Heat melts miss-routed wires causing shorts. If it is heat the bike needs to see a mechanic.

That is about it. The big thing is not to panic. Push your bike to side and slowly go through the starting procedure and remember that builders and vintage riders go through it all the time.

-bad Uncle Monkey

GOOD NEWS FOR HARLEY-DAVIDSON– The Trump administration said today that motorcycle manufacturer Harley-Davidson would not have to pay a portion of a settlement related to allegations of violations of the Clean Air Act.

The Obama administration accused Harley-Davidson last August of selling more than 340,000 after-market defeat devices that boosted motorcycle performance but increased smog-forming emissions.

Under the originally proposed deal, Harley-Davidson would have paid a $12 million fine and given $3 million to the American Lung Association of the Northeast for a program to upgrade wood-burning appliances to ones that reduce nitrogen oxides and hydrocarbon pollution.

The new consent decree proposed in court today keeps in place the $12 million civil penalty but drops the $3 million pollution project.

Last month, Attorney General Jeff Sessions declared an end to such “third-party settlements,” in which companies pay for projects not directly related to their violations. That money should not go to “the political friends of whoever is in power,” Sessions said at the time.

In its filing with Government Accountability Office, the Trump administration also said it was reviewing the mitigation project in the original deal and working on a legal opinion — a process expected to take several more months to complete.

Federal officials and Harley-Davidson “attempted to negotiate a substitute mitigation project, but were unable to reach timely agreement on a suitable alternative,” the administration wrote. “The United States has decided on balance that proceeding now with the substitute consent decree is in the public interest.”

WHAT’S NEXT:
DOJ will take public comment on the new proposed consent decree for 30 days.

NEVER DULL, NEVER STOP AND NEVER GIVE UP— I’ve been trying to get the city of Los Angeles to own up to a Waterfront for Wilmington for 13 years with several others from the community.

The suburb of Wilmington has taken the brunt of Port Action for decades and the money goes to San Pedro, San Diego and Wilmington is beginning to look like a third world country between Long Beach and San Pedro. I don’t get it, but maybe I do.

I listen at meetings how well the Port is doing financially, yet no money is spent here even to fix the streets or landscaping. It’s bullshit and I’m fed up.

I’m trying to walk away from this issue, but can’t. It’s getting worse and who the fuck cares?

Whatever, we have motorcycles to build, land speed records to chase, girls to watch and Sturgis coming up.

No time to lose. Have a blast this weekend.
