WILD BIKERNET WEEKLY NEWS for July 13, 2017

Hey,

This has been a wild-as-fuck week at the Bikernet Headquarters, and it’s not over yet. Our two Bonneville bikes left for the Sturgis Museum. Jimmy and his Rioja son, Josh started to prep the side of the building for a mural effort.

Carlos Canales came by to discuss the mural elements and Paul Aiken, from Aeromach sent us the final babe image—Perfect.

Tony Spinalli, a Hamster, who is buying a Road Glide from Eddie Trotta wanted to stop by for lunch. I didn’t have a minute to breathe, but I said yes. Maybe he could give me a hand prepping the bikes for the KeyBoard Shippers who were due to arrive, but who the hell knew when.

We were working on a couple of bikes to take to Sturgis and I finished one. The other one was messing with me. Tony saved my ass.

The Bikernet Weekly News is sponsored in part by companies who also dig Freedom including: Cycle Source Magazine, the MRF, Las Vegas Bikefest, Iron Trader News, ChopperTown and BorntoRide.com, Sturgis Museum.

CALMING THOUGHT FOR THE DAY–
I find it ironic that the colors red, white, and blue stand for freedom until they are flashing behind you.

If a Republican decides he needs health care, he goes about shopping for it, or may choose a job that provides it.
If a Democrat decides he needs health care, he demands that the rest of us pay for his.

Relationships are a lot like algebra. Have you ever looked at your X and wondered Y?

Money talks…but all mine ever says is good-bye.

ADVICE FROM THE BLACK HAWK–

Good to hear from you. Sounds like the same problem that pre-Twin Cam
H-D’s deal with if they sit for a while. There is a check ball in the oil pump that prevents oil draining from the tank into the engine during shutdown. If a small particle of carbon or dirt gets between the ball and the seat when the engine is shut down then oil will drain from the tank in to the engine and cause a cold-start sumping problem.

When you fire the engine oil will blow out the breathers until the engine runs long enough to return the sumped oil to the oil tank. After running the engine long enough to clear it you may want to change the oil and get any contamination out of the system.

Things are good here at the shop. Still going strong. I am still remanufacturing the Indian PP100 engines. They are coming in at a steady rate. I have four of them here now. Plus, I am offering a national rebuild program on my website, which is beginning to spark interest.

My big push is in the vintage market. I am advertising in the Antique Motorcycle Club of America magazine, which has really begun to get legs. I had a customer bring me a 1921 JD Harley, which they want to have the engine and transmission rebuilt and the bike made ready for the upcoming Cannonball Run next year.

It is a real honor just to be able to work on such an outstanding machine. And there is beginning to be a steady flow of engines and components coming in for work. I also have a few other irons in the fire, all of which keep me pretty busy.

She’s coming along, finally! Would like to switch her to a belt drive, but think that will have to wait. Probably go put the rocker boxes on shortly, then wait on the tappets to come in next weekend.

NEW CHANCE HOGAN BOOK REVIEW COMING, WORLD RUN–

Received the “WORLD RUN” book late last week and finished it yesterday, since I’m still a little restricted on what I can do. Another good read!

Off the cane for a few days now but still not 100%. That’ll take a little time. Lots of walking but no riding as yet, which sucks.

I’ll try and put together enough coherent thoughts for a review in a bit.

Sturgis is on my bucket list. I had Laconia covered as I lived an hour south for many years and now here in South Daytona have Bike Week and Biketoberfest covered.

THE AERODYNAMICS BEHIND THE TOP 1 ACK ATTACK–
The Secret To Going 400 mph!

Drag racers say there is no replacement for displacement. However, when you are going for 400 mph, Mike Akatiff, owner and designer of the fastest streamliner motorcycle in history, would beg to differ.

The secret to success is not more cubic inches, but less drag, according to Akatiff. With the aerodynamics dialed in, the TOP 1 ACK ATTACK is headed to the world’s highest salt flat, Bolivia’s Salar de Uyuni, for the Top of the World Landspeed Challenge on August 3-8, 2017 with an impressive goal of exceeding 400 mph.

“The aerodynamics of the ACK ATTACK, or any high-speed land vehicle, are so important,” notes Akatiff . “We’ve run high-speed computer simulations, but to get really accurate data, we performed wind tunnel testing.” Akatiff and the ACK ATTACK team went to the Darko Technologies wind tunnel to unlock the data they needed to go 400 mph/643.74 km/h on the Bolivian salt flats.

“We wanted to see how the air flows around the bike and found that the bike was already very streamlined the way it is,” says Akatiff. The sleek carbon fiber-skinned streamliner slices through the air with a very efficient drag coefficient of 0.71. That said, Akatiff and the team knew that any reduction in drag would improve their speed.

“For every percentage point we further reduce drag, it gives us another 4 mph/6.43 km/h of speed,” says Akatiff. So, if we reduce drag by 10 percent, theoretically we will go 40 mph faster with the power we already have.”

Up- and downforces were another critical aspect of wind tunnel testing to ensure the ACK ATTACK doesn’t lift off the ground. Akatiff and his team combine scientific data and wind tunnel testing with years of experience challenging — and beating — the land speed record to come up with solutions.

“We added a 30-gallon water tank in the nosecone to create the ‘lawn dart’ effect,” says Akatiff. “It adds enough weight on the front wheel to keep the motorcycle balanced and tracking straight.”

The Salar de Uyuni salt flat is nearly 12,000 feet (3,656 meters) above sea level. However, the team is confident that the twin 1300cc Suzuki Hayabusa engines will deliver more than enough horsepower. A ram air induction scoop channels air into a specially built Garret turbocharger/intercooler system to force-feed both engines with 35 lbs. of boost to generate 900+ horsepower.

Power is not the problem according to Akatiff, keeping his focus on aerodynamics. “We have never been able to run the ACK ATTACK with the doors at the back, for various reasons, but we wanted to find out what reduction in drag they would give us. So we tested the exact configuration we had when we set the land speed record in 2010 — except we put the doors back on to see if we could reduce drag.”

The results were startling: with the doors in place, the wind tunnel tests demonstrated a 40-pound reduction in drag — good for an extra 40 horsepower. This number will be even better in the high elevation of Bolivia.

“If you went 400 mph at the Bonneville salt flats and then go clear up to 12,000 feet with the same amount of drag on the vehicle, you would go 8% or 32 mph faster,” explains Akatiff. “With the doors on we saw another 9% in reduced drag, so that’s going to add another 60 mph with the same power.”

There is one more secret to going 400 mph for the ACK ATTACK. TOP1 Evolution ACK ATTACK Special Formula lubricants. “When we set the land speed record of 376.4 mph/605.7 km/h, we couldn’t shift into high gear,” says Akatiff. “The TOP 1 lubricants endured incredible abuse, extended high heat and shear forces well beyond what we had anticipated, yet the ACK ATTACK didn’t suffer any scoring, galling or internal engine damage.”

The TOP 1 ACK ATTACK is the only streamliner motorcycle to have made more than 25 runs over 300 mph and without catastrophic engine failure. “TOP 1 works,” says Mike Akatiff. “We have held the world Land Speed Record for a decade as proof.”

See more of the TOP 1 ACK ATTACK wind tunnel work in preparation for the Top of the World Landspeed Challenge at Salar de Uyuni in Episode 3 of the TOP 1 ACK ATTACK video series:

101-Year Old Biker Chick Leads Motorcycle Convoy for Her Birthday–

Maud Cartlidge, a charming biker lady, was celebrating her 101st birthday at Autumn Lodge care home in Moss Lane surrounded by her friends and family. She was more than surprised when a whole convoy of over 100 motorcycles crashed the party!

Biker Paul Green organized the surprise on Facebook and drove lots of bikers from around the whole area.

The bikers gifted Maud a motorcycle statue with a plaque saying: “Happy 101st Birthday Maud” which she promised to place in the lounge of the care home so everyone could see it.

The biker lady rode on the back of a trike, leading the convoy and was completely overwhelmed.

Maud said: “It’s very exciting, I love the noise the bikes make, I’m very overwhelmed but that ride was amazing, it’s so nice to not be forgotten.”

Many of the bikers bought cards and flowers to help Maud celebrate her special day.

BIKERNET UNIVERSITY ENGLISH DEPARTMENT WORD OF THE DAY—

Ameliorate:  [uh-meel-yuh-reyt, uh-mee-lee-uh-]

verb
1. to make or become better, more bearable, or more satisfactory; improve: strategies to ameliorate negative effects on the environment.

QUOTES

Why did he go into the record business? Because he wanted to ameliorate the condition of the average man through the one thing that can ameliorate–not bigger cars or better TV sets, but through art, through music.

— Philip K. Dick, Humpty Dumpty in Oakland, 1986

ORIGIN
Ameliorate and meliorate mean the same thing, “to make better.” Both verbs come from the Late Latin meliorare “to improve,” a derivative of the adjective melior “better.” Meliorate is the earlier form (mid-16th century); the a- in ameliorate came from French améliorer and ultimately derives from the Latin prefix ad-. Ameliorate entered English in the 18th century.

SATURDAY HEAT? COOL DOWN WITH SOME NASCAR NIGHT RACING AT IRWINDALE —

Super Stocks & Bandoleros Both Back Saturday!

Irwindale, Calif. – – NASCAR Nights at Irwindale are always a great way to cool off a bit after a hot day (unless, of course, you’re a racing driver in the middle of a torrid Championship points chase).

This Saturday four of the divisions on the night’s event card have close (and closer) points totals at just about half-way in the 2017 competition season…PLUS two other divisions will be making a special appearance for the fans … There’s ton of hot racing on the track and some cool breezes up in the stands … enjoy.

In the track’s premier division, the LKQ Pick Your Part Late Models, only 38 points separate first and second place after the first 11 races of the 20-race 2017 season. Adding to the fun (tension really) is the fact that the two drivers locked in that tight battle are teammates!

Trevor Huddleston, from Agoura Hills, has 528 points, and Dylan Garner, from Yorba Linda, has 490 markers on points standing page in the track’s website (www.irwindaleeventcenter.com).

Pointing up the fact that consistency and good finishes are vital under Irwindale’s points plan, Huddleston has won 7 races so far and Garner has not tasted victory in even one. However … his strong runs and high placings at virtually every event he’s run have kept his car number high up on the points listings page.

Last year a rookie, this year a real contender: La Mirada’s Ryan Vargas is trying to make every race count too and doing a good job of it with his 454 points and his third place standing in the Late Models coming in to Saturday’s set of two (full, points-paying) races at the Speedway.

At the July 1 Late Model race, Toni Marie McCray’s #90 car, (the apparent winner on the track in both of the night’s races), failed to pass a post race technical inspection and the popular driver from Highland dropped down to tenth place in the standings.

In the INEX Legend Cars, Lakeside’s Darren Amidon has a 20-point lead over Bakersfield’s Colton Page 196 to 176 after four races in their 10-race season. Austin Farr, from Lomita, and Chad Schug from Oak Hills are hanging close only 10 points behind Page and tied for third place at 166 each. Legend Cars are technically-identical, purpose-built racing cars powered by a 1,250cc sealed (unmodified and tamper-proof) Yamaha motorcycle engine and the competition is ALWAYS guaranteed close in this division.

Robby Hornsby has a perfect game going after the first three events in the Sharkey’s Spec Late Models, his score line reading: 50, 50, 50. (That’s three wins).

But, once again, consistency pays off at the Speedway and Sierra Madre’s Todd Conrad, with two seconds and a third behind Hornsby, is only 8 points back of the Yucaipa driver at 142. And … Just 2 scant points back of Conrad, there’s Ed Cutler from Ventura at 140. These machines (except for the paint schemes and the racing numbers on the doors) are, like the Legend Cars, technically identical, and the ultra-close lap times and tight points tallies are proof of the supposition.

The Robertson Solar Southwest Tour Trucks will be back on Saturday night for the seventh race in their 14-race 2017 season. Ronnie Davis leads the spec trucks in with 334 points, with Mike Kelperis and Derek Robertson not very far behind at 290 and 284 points respectively.

And, on Saturday night two Irwindale fan favorites will be back for the evening: the Jan’s Towing Super Stocks and the Jan’s Towing Bandoleros will both be back and running hard on Irwindale’s tricky inner third-mile course.

Gates open at 4pm, the On-Track Autograph Session featuring all of the above (and many more) driver, crews and cars starts at 5:45pm, the night’s opening ceremonies are at 6:45pm, and racing starts right on the dot at 7pm.

Discount tickets are available on-line
until midnight Friday, July 14

Third Annual AIDAN’S RIDE Sturgis–
Presented by Geico Motorcycle Insurance is Set for 77th Anniversary Sturgis Motorcycle Rally 2017

Aidan Jack Seeger Foundation Charity Ride to Fight ALD Building on Initial Success

Brooklyn, New York (July 12, 2017) – The third annual Aidan’s Ride Sturgis, a charity motorcycle ride organized to fight ALD, will take place Tuesday, August 8, 2017, during the 77th anniversary of the iconic Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. Last year, 75 riders participated, raising over $6,000 for the Aidan Jack Seeger Foundation, and organizers expect an even bigger turnout this time around.

“We were so happy with the response and support we received,” said Elisa Seeger, Aidan’s mother and founder of the foundation. “This is another great step in our journey and mission to educate people about ALD, push for newborn screening in all 50 states and hopefully save families from enduring what ours did.”

Adrenoleukodystrophy (ALD) is an inherited x-linked genetic disease that affects all neurological functions and reduces those afflicted with it to a vegetative state that persists until death. Aidan Jack Seeger was just six years old when he was diagnosed with ALD in 2011. He succumbed to the disease in April of 2012. Had he been diagnosed at birth, he could have undergone treatment that would have arrested the disease and allowed him to live a full life.

Held to benefit the Aidan Jack Seeger Foundation, which was established in Aidan’s honor, Aidan’s Ride Sturgis seeks to raise funds for the purpose of helping families with children diagnosed with Adrenoleukodystrophy, heightening awareness about ALD and pushing for legislation in every state that mandates screening of newborns for the disease.

New York started the process of ALD Newborn Screening thanks to Aidan’s Law, passed by the state legislature in the wake of Aidan’s tragic and untimely death. As of May 2017, over 800,000 newborns have been screened in New York and 62 babies have tested positive for disease. Thanks to early detection, these children are undergoing treatment that will allow them to live full lives.

The third annual Aidan’s Ride Sturgis will be 70-miles long and start at Sturgis Guns, then wind through Vanocker Canyon in the Black Hills, stop for brunch at Murphy’s Pub in Rapid City, SD, and end at up at The Buffalo Chip, Sportster Show where organizers will hold their charity raffle.

Tickets are $35 per rider or $60 for passenger and rider. Buy Tickets online at https://www.flipcause.com/secure/event_step2/MjA2MTI=/13254

BIKERNET BAD JOKE LIBRARY IS OPEN TO THE PUBLIC–

A State Trooper pulled an 87-year-old woman over for speeding. As he looked at her driver’s license he was surprised to notice that attached to it was a conceal weapon permit.

Taken aback, he couldn’t help but ask, “Do you have a gun in your possession?”

She replied in her crackly voice, “Indeed, I do. Why I have a 45 automatic in the glove box.”

The trooper then asked if she had any other weapons.

She replied, “I have a 9 mm Glock in the center console.”

The shocked trooper asked, “Is that all the weapons you are transporting?”

The little old lady held up her purse and replied, “Well, I do keep a 38 special in my purse.”

Finally, the astonished trooper asked, “What are you afraid of?”

And the little old lady smiled and replied: “Not a Fucking Thing.”

Russia doesn’t rate in Trump Country
Health care, not campaign collusion, is what really gets their motors running

WAYNESBORO , TENN.
There’s a little piece of Russia in the heart of Trump Country, USA.

Urals, Russian-made motorcycles, sit outside Mike’s Cycle and Marine in Waynesboro, about 100 miles southwest of Nashville.

Inside, the shop’s namesake, Mike Mitchell, uses a wrench to crank a lug nut off a motorcycle. His wife, Debbie; smokes a cigarette in the office.

After 37 years of working in Wayne County, Mike Mitchell loves bikes. He has met Russians and liked them, too.
Mitchell isn’t losing sleep over the scrutiny of President Trump’s ties to Russia and revelations surrounding his son’s meeting to get damaging information about Democratic rival Hillary Clinton.

“I’m sure the other side was looking for dirt. I just can’t believe they weren’t. I’m sure the Americans are over there piddling and messing around in their business,” he said. “If they’re over here messing in our system, we’ve just got to figure out how to keep it from affecting us.” In November, Wayne County overwhelmingly voted for Trump.

The region, filled with rolling hills and woods near the Alabama border, is still proud of Trump, said Wayne County Re- publican Party Chairwoman Stephanie Pearson.

“I probably am a bigger supporter of him. I have a greater respect and admiration for him and his office,” Pearson said.

Pearson, who works down the road from Waynesboro as city clerk of Collinwood, said Trump should tone down the personal attacks on Twitter.
But she said she’s more ashamed of the way Democrats, the media and opponents have attacked her president, and she is disappointed in congressional Republicans for not doing more to help him.

She applauded Donald Trump Jr. for releasing his emails about a meeting with a Russian attorney in the midst of the campaign against Clinton.
There’s very little that would change her mind about Trump.

Steven Jackson, who runs a barbershop in Waynesboro where he also sells “good junk,” said his father would kill him if he knew he voted for Trump. Jackson, 51, said his father was a lifelong Democrat, and he’s one too.

Jackson voted for Trump, the first Republican he has ever voted for, not because he disliked President Obama but because he believes the Democratic Party did not do enough to improve the economy.

“I saw (Trump) as a person I could relate to,” Jackson said. “In business, it doesn’t matter if you’re a Republican or Democrat. You’ve got to make it.”
Looking down at a notebook filled with numbers, Mike’s wife, Debbie, said it’s not Russian interference she’s worried about. It’s tough to care about possible collusion with Russia when your husband needs new knees.

“We’ve lost everything, pretty much,” Debbie Mitchell said. “We can’t afford health care, period. We didn’t qualify for Obamacare, we didn’t qualify for (Medicaid), and we can’t afford to buy health insurance. We’re the ones that fall through the cracks.”

Asked if the situation made her nervous, she laughed.
“Nervous? We’ve been doing it for years. We passed nervous a while back.”

THE WOMEN RIDERS NOW REPORT–

Wow, I can’t believe it’s July already! We can certainly tell summer is in full swing here in Southern California, where we’ve seen triple-digit temperatures for the last few weeks.

The only way to beat the heat is to stick to the coast, which isn’t such a terrible thing anyway. Thanks to recent landslides, large sections of the Pacific Coast Highway along the famous Big Sur region of the Central Coast are closed, but we found one 10–mile section that’s still accessible via a narrow, winding road up and over the mountains.

So on a recent three-day camping trip (which you’ll be able to read about next month), we dropped in and scored a campsite with a perfect view of the ocean. Shooting photos on the normally tourist-choked PCH was a surreal, and possibly once–in–a–lifetime experience. You can get a sneak peak at some photos from the trip on our Facebook page.

Give us a “Like” while you’re there, and you’ll be entered to win a brand new Cortech Bella leather jacket.

And now, it’s kickstands up! Happy riding!

I DON’T KNOW WHAT IT IS–
but it’s never dull around here. I keep thinking I’ll catch up with our projects and kick back, but that doesn’t seem to happen.

I know part of the issue includes dreams. I’ve had a dream for several years to have a mural painted on the side of the building to support our waterfront. It’s been a slow process and we’ve tried to obtain grants to cover the cost. We’ve struck out with a couple of efforts, but I never give up on a terrific idea.

Jeremiah hooked me up with this son, who introduced me to Carlos Canales, a tattoo artist, illustrator, muralist. This longshoreman hit the nail on the head when it came to our goals. I kept looking for the money to support the effort.

My painter, the Pirate, had a change of fortunes and he started to flake on me. Once more I found Jimmy who understood what we needed and delivered immediately. Part of making any goal happen is being ready to move when the opportunities align themselves.

Of course, this rule doesn’t apply to my Grandson. His projects keep coming. We picked up his MetalSport wheels the other day and he hauled them to Bartels’ for a set of Metzler tires. Hang on as we fly into the next tech with his ’05 Dyna glide.

And we have more reports coming from Bennett’s Performance on FXRs, his Born Free Bike Build, my Panhead rebuild, you name it.

See, never dull.

Have a helluva weekend,

–Bandit
