THE BORN FREE BIKERNET WEEKLY NEWS from June 22, 2017

Hey,

Last week was Smoke Out Action on the east coast. This week it’s Born Free Weekend with builders coming from all over the world.

Mike Lichter, shooting for Easyriders, and I hit it over to the Vard Manufacturing shop in Santa Ana where guys from all over the country and even a builder from Sweden put the final touches to their bikes for the show.

Some were actually assembling their bikes on the spot. I was edgy about being in this organized but small shop when guys are trying to concentrate on their annual goal. Most were invited builders. Three of the bikes were big twins (two Knuckleheads) in modified single loop VL frames (remember Irish Rich). Dave Polgreen is partners with Jeff Leighton in the Wretched Hive Bike Shop (also Vard). Dave pored fluids in his beautiful Knucklehead for the final start up with dual chromed Linkerts, while we were there and on hand. Amazing bikes and a couple of years ago folks said choppers were dead—Never.

Mike Silvio, Cycle Mos, in Tennesse stopped by to deal with a 45 primary chain issue.

Martin Carlgren of Ringo Chop Shop, Gothenburg, Sweden worked assembling the one-off Husgarvana engine from the ’40s. It still wasn’t done, but he smiled while pushing forward on his amazing build. Andy Carter from Pangea Speed, in Salt Lake City with an 80-inch ULH flathead tuned his slick chop for sea level riding.

His handmade custom narrow glide reminded me of Andy Hansen’s first full-on custom in 1970. He rough engraved some of his components and I quizzed him. I’m thinking about engraving something on my Panhead with the help of my grandson who can make a tattoo template. Hang on for more reports. Mike pointed out how Chris Callen beat me to the punch with his all-engraved Sporty.

Blond Guy Joke An Irishman, a Mexican and a Blond Guy were doing construction work on scaffolding on the 20th floor of a building. They were eating lunch and the Irishman said, ‘Corned beef and cabbage!

If I get corned beef and cabbage one more time for lunch, I’m going to jump off this building.’

The Mexican opened his lunch box and exclaimed, ‘Burritos again! If I get burritos one more time I’m going to jump off, too.’

The blond opened his lunch and said, ‘ Bologna again! If I get a bologna sandwich one more time, I’m jumping too.’

The next day, the Irishman opened his lunch box, saw corned beef and cabbage, and jumped to his death.

The Mexican opened his lunch, saw a burrito, and jumped, too.

The blond guy opened his lunch, saw the bologna and jumped to his death as well.

At the funeral, the Irishman’s wife was weeping. She said, ‘If I’d known how really tired he was of corned beef and cabbage, I never would have given it to him again!’

The Mexican’s wife also wept and said, ‘I could have given him tacos or enchiladas! I didn’t realize he hated burritos so much.’

Everyone turned and stared at the blonde’s wife. The blonde’s wife said, don’t look at me. He makes his own lunch…’

In the days before birth control pills, a young bride-to-be asked her gynecologist to recommend some sort of contraceptive. He suggested she try withdraw, douches or condoms. Several years later, the woman was walking down the street with three children when she happened to run across her old doctor.

“I see you decided not to take my advice,” he said, eyeing the young children.

“On the contrary, doc,” she exclaimed, “Davey here was a pullout, Darcy was a washout, and Delores was a blowout!”

ROUNDER RECORDS RELEASES 3rd COLLECTION OF HISTORIC CATALOGUE TO GLOBAL RADIO–
Rounder Records has now released its 3rd collection of their historic catalogue, curated by Ken Irwin, to global radio “exclusively” via AirPlay Direct.

“It has been such a joy working with Ken over the last three months to curate these collections,” says Ashley Moyer Publicity Manager at Rounder. “Many of these releases were before my time at the label and having the opportunity to go back and hear some of the albums that Ken feels shaped the sound of Rounder has been so insightful.

This month’s curation offers a variety of styles from country to polka to western swing and blues, featuring some of the best musicians in their genres including Riders in the Sky and Brave Combo. I think there is something here for everyone to enjoy, no matter their musical taste.”

CHANCE GETS A CHANCE–
Bandit,

Thanks again for the copy of Harbor Town Seduction. Since my hip thing was knocked back a couple of days until Thursday, I had a little down time and picked up the book. Well after a couple of sittings it was done. I’ll create a better review as promised later but just wanted to say I enjoyed the book immensely.

I was sorry I blew through it but then that is a good sign if you can’t put it down and get lost in the story.

Nicely done.

Our first new piece is my Suicide King derby cover. Plus, I’m shipping your 5-Ball Derby this week.

“The King of Hearts is also famously known as the “Suicide King” for the sword he appears to hold to his own neck. Did lost love drive him to madness and despair, or was he simply winding up to run his blade through a romantic rival?

We’ll never know, but this new derby cover from Two-Bit Choppers is sure to add the spirit of the Suicide King to your Twin Cam Harley-Davidson motorcycle. Milled from aircraft-grade 6061T6 billet aluminum stock before being sent off for military spec hard black anodizing, and finally back into the machine to painstakingly engrave the Suicide King to absolute perfection.

It’s 100-percent designed, manufactured and finished with pride in the U.S.A. Fits all 1999-current Dyna, 2000-current Softail and 1999-2016 Touring.”

BIKERNET SCIENCE CENTER–
Autotalks Launches Bike-to-Vehicle (B2V) Technology to Prevent Motorcycle Accidents

Autotalks, the world leader in V2X (Vehicle-to-Everything) communication solutions, is launching its bike-to-vehicle (B2V) solution, a technology for the prevention of motorcycle accidents. The solution is based on the B2X (Bike-to-Everything) chipset developed by the Israeli company.

Bosch, as a leading global supplier of technology and services, announced on May 23 that it is carrying out a development B2V study that incorporates Autotalks’ B2V technology alongside Ducati’s motorcycles and Cohda Wireless’ software stack.
The company also said that according to Bosch accident research, the B2V technology could prevent nearly a third of all powered two-wheeler accidents with casualties in Germany.

Autotalks’ B2V solution enables detection of motorcycles that are not visible to the human eye or cameras of any sort. The advantages of the Autotalks’ solution include, among other things, simple integration, low power consumption, the smallest form factor, highest range of operating temperature and smallest physical size, which results in its resistance to the strong vibration and challenging environmental conditions of motorcycles.

The use of DSRC (dedicated short range communications) protocol enables cars and motorcycles to safely exchange data such as speed, direction of travel, location and braking mode. Since motorcycles rarely have telematics services and are not obliged to support the eCall regulation, they do not include a cellular modem. Therefore, according to Autotalks, the simplest and cheapest connectivity for motorcycles is DSRC.

Zyss added: “A considerable proportion of the drivers involved in an accident with a motorcycle claimed that they did not even see the motorcycle approaching. Motorcycles are characterized by their relatively small size, high speed and maneuverability, which make it difficult to identify them and predict their movements. B2V will enhance motorcyclists’ safety.”

NEW ART FROM HEATHER NEW–
These were a few pieces I did a few weeks ago for Gary Capone at LeMani Moto out of Jersey.

Great guy to work for…he’s hilarious (let’s face it, that’s an important quality in any human being!!) and gives me a lot of artistic freedom. He insists on a whole lot of hand made parts on every bike. The Slavic translates as “hand made” and the eagle motif comes from the Russian coat of arms.

Naturally it is being called “The Russian Bike”
I hope you have time to check out some of his other creations!

ZERO MOTORCYCLES NEW “DON’T WAIT FOR WASHINGTON” E-BIKE PROGRAM–
The recently launched program was created to advocate for electric motorcycles and assure buyers they will get the Electric Motorcycle Federal Tax Credit. “Don’t Wait For Washington” assures “up to $1,869 on a Zero motorcycle if the government fails to reinstate the Electric Motorcycle Tax Credit.”

The initiative serves the dual purposes of driving the conversation on electric motorcycles forward while legislation languishes in Washington, and of motivating would-be electric motorcycle riders to join the e-movement.

Should the federal government fail to reinstate the tax credit by the end of the year, then Zero will step up and send 10% cash back to buyers, matching the expired tax credit for new, eligible 2017 Zero motorcycles.

THE BIKERNET BAD JOKE LIBRARY IS STILL OPEN–
A woman from Los Angeles who was a tree hugging, liberal Democrat and an anti-hunter purchased a piece of timberland near Colville, WA . There was a large tree …on one of the highest points in the tract. She wanted a good view of the natural splendor of her land so she started to climb the big tree.

As she neared the top she encountered a spotted owl that attacked her. In her haste to escape, the woman slid down the tree to the ground and got many splinters in her crotch.
In considerable pain, she hurried to a local ER to see a doctor. She told him she was an environmentalist, a Democrat, and an anti-hunter and how she came to get all the splinters. The doctor listened to her story with great patience and then told her to go wait in the examining room and he would see if he could help her.

She sat and waited three hours before the doctor re-appeared.The angry woman demanded, “What took you so long?”
He smiled and then told her, “Well, I had to get permits from the Environmental Protection Agency, the Forest Service, and the Bureau of Land Management before I could remove old-growth timber from a ‘recreational area’ so close to a Waste Treatment Facility.

And I’m sorry, but due to Obama-Care they turned you down.

IRON AND RESIN MADE BY HAND IN THE USA–
Manufacturing in the U.S. is easier said than done. It’s cheaper and easier to have product made offshore. But if we’re ever going to bring the apparel industry home it’s going to start with a commitment to American Industry and the environment.

Iron & Resin has made the commitment to take the Onshore First approach and strives to develop and produce all garments locally before turning to an offshore resource. And while it’s not yet possible to make everything here in the states, we are proud to say that we design and print all of our graphic tees in our very own factory in Ventura, California.

NEWS FROM AMD EUROPEAN Custom Bike Show–
Norrtälje, Sweden, June 3rd

Arguably the world’s oldest custom motorcycle show, the Custom Bike Show in Sweden (June 3) saw some 230 bikes competing in eight classes for the chance to win expenses to compete at next year’s 13th AMD World Championship of Custom Bike Building at ‘INTERMOT Customized’, Cologne, Germany, in October 2018.

The ‘Custom Bike Show’ was the first event to become an AMD World Championship Affiliate 13 years ago, and this year was the 43rd ‘Custom Bike Show’ organized by Sweden’s Twin Club MC since it started in 1971.

The show is a one day ‘Ride-In’ staged in the city park at the hugely supportive, motorcycle-friendly coastal city of Norrtälje an hour north east of Swedish capital city Stockholm – estimates suggest that this year saw more than 5,000 bikes and over 9,000 show visitors in total descend on the small community from all over Sweden and neighboring countries such as Norway, Finland, the Baltic States (Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia) and Germany.

Sweden is well known as the “motherload” for choppers, and anyone who thinks Swedish style long fork choppers have been consigned to history should be reassured by the 60 bikes competing in the show’s largest class, the ‘Chopper Class’, with Sami Järvelä from Scrap Mc, of Rauma, Finland, taking the class win and the first of the three AMD World Championship prizes.

The growing popularity of BMWs as custom platforms was in evidence, especially among the 30-plus field competing in the ‘Cafe Racer’ class, though none made the podium, with the class win being taken by Jaakko Mäkelä, also from Finland (Nousiainen) with an NSU (remember them?), with second and third places taken by Swedes Dan Andersson from Borlänge second with a Triton (a cross between Triumph and Norton), and third place going to Johan Syrén from Sundbyberg with a Triumph Thruxton.

The always innovative creativity of customizers in Europe was in evidence with Petri Ruusunen’s ‘Velacimoteur’. From Turku in Finland, his brand new design of a hand-built 1910s style antique look engine may have had some of the other “old school” show purists scratching their heads (“how can you enter the show with an engine that never existed?”), but as an exercise in the purest form of custom craftsmanship, it had “original” stamped all over it!

NSU

Even in the highly creative and often exotic circles of the European custom bike building scene, noted for its often eclectic platform choices, NSU engines are rare sights these days. Surprisingly so, given how popular they were in Europe, in the 1950s especially, and given how creative the ‘retro’ scene has proven to be in the past decade.

Founded in Germany in 1873, their first motorcycle appeared in 1901. During WW II it was NSU who produced the Kettenkrad, the NSU HK101 – a half-tracked motorcycle (with an engine from the Opel Olympia) that has become a familiar sight in European theatre period war movies.

Under the guidance of chief engineer Albert Roder, NSU grew strongly, and at one stage (1955) was, in fact, the largest motorcycle manufacturer by annual volume in the world. Bonneville World Land Speed records in 1951, 1953, 1954 and 1955 fuelled that popularity, with Wilhelm Herz becoming the first person to ride a motorcycle (an NSU) over 200 mph (322 km/h) at Bonneville in August 1956.

The company was also a car manufacturer, from 1905 until 1932, and re-entered the auto market in 1957, launching what was then the world’s first rotary Wankel engined car in 1964. However, that was ultimately to prove their financial undoing with NSU being swallowed up by present day Ducati owner Volkswagen in 1969 and folded into their Auto Union/Audi subsidiary; NSU motorcycle production ceased in 1967 – their last model was the ‘Quick 50’.

WEEKLY GUN NUT REPORT–

I used to live in downtown St. Louis, Missouri.

I love my home city. It’s beautiful in so many ways.

But I also knew the harsh reality of my location.

My cousin was robbed at gunpoint – right in my neighborhood. A friend of my husband was stuck up in a parking lot a block away. As the years went by, gang activity increased. Drug use, and the crime it breeds, began to crop up everywhere.

Soon, the nightly news became little more than an ongoing documentary of each day’s victims.

So my husband and I carried.

When our kids were old enough to play outside, they did so with me standing watch, arms crossed and a 9mm on my hip. My neighbors were thankful for it. They knew my husband and I were responsible gun owners, and that we had our eyes on the block. If we were outside, their kids were okay.

If only NRA Carry Guard existed back then.

CHARITY REPORT– Kyle Petty Charity Ride Across America Raises $1.3 Million for Charity.

OVER, 200 riders traveled the Pacific Northwest from Portland to Milwaukee to raise funds and awareness for Victory Junction

The Kyle Petty Charity Ride Across America, one of the most successful and popular charity rides in the country, today announced its 23rd anniversary Ride raised $1.3 million – the most funds raised in a single year since 2008. Funds raised directly benefit Victory Junction – a camp dedicated to providing life-changing camping experiences for children with chronic or life-threatening illnesses.

Since the Ride’s inception in 1995, more than 8,085 children have attended Victory Junction at no cost to their families. And this year, the Ride will send 100 kids to summer camp at Victory Junction.

On May 13, former NASCAR driver and NBC Sports racing analyst Kyle Petty embarked on a 2,400-mile cross-country route, leading 200 bikers from Portland, Oregon, to Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Covering eight states in seven days, the Ride ventured to many of our country’s historic landmarks, including Mount Rushmore, Badlands National Park, and for the first time in the Ride’s history, Yellowstone National Park.

Ending the Ride in Harley-Davidson’s hometown of Milwaukee on May 19, riders celebrated at the Harley-Davidson Museum and were treated to a behind-the-scenes tour of the Harley-Davidson Corporate Offices – where some became the first-ever to sign the company’s famous water tower.

“This might be my 23rd year leading the Ride, but the overwhelming support we receive from fans in local towns across America just never ceases to impress me and we’re so grateful for that,” said Petty. “We had a very special welcome in Ten Sleep, Wyoming, where an entire K-12 school came out to greet us, and unforgettable receptions in Walla Walla, Washington, and in Mitchell, South Dakota. Not to mention the support from small towns like Kooskia, Idaho, and Raymond and Darwin, Minnesota.”

This year’s Ride surpassed last year’s total funds raised by $300,000. Funds were gathered from fans along the route, as part of the Ride’s “Small Change. Big Impact.” program, as well as donations made by generous sponsors, organizations, and the riders themselves.

“We couldn’t do what we do without the support of our loyal sponsors, and this year we were fortunate enough to visit our friends at Manheim Portland, Manheim Minneapolis, WinCraft Inc. and Harley-Davidson,” said Petty. “Not only did these companies make generous contributions to our cause, but they also made an extra special effort to provide our riders with great food, live music, activities and more.”

This year’s Ride also featured several celebrity riders, including NASCAR Hall of Famer and seven time champion Richard Petty, NASCAR Hall of Fame nominee, Hershel McGriff, NASCAR legends Harry Gant and Donnie Allison, former NFL great and ESPN’s 2016 Coaches Poll greatest college football player of all time, Herschel Walker, Heisman Trophy winner (1980) and Super Bowl champion (XXII) George Rogers, NBC Sports NASCAR personality Rick Allen, and Harley-Davidson Museum president, Bill Davidson, whose great grandfather who founded the company.

“Traveling across the country with friends and family on two wheels is an amazing experience in itself, but what makes this Ride truly special is that it’s all for the kids at Victory Junction. That’s why we ride,” said Kyle’s father, Richard Petty. “Nothing is more important than giving kids a chance to just be kids.”

Since 1995, more than 8,175 riders have logged more than 11.9 million cumulative motorcycle miles and raised $18 million for Victory Junction and other children’s charities. Victory Junction has served as the Ride’s primary beneficiary since its establishment by Petty and his family in 2004 in honor of his late son, Adam.

The 2017 Ride was made possible by presenting sponsor Manheim, as well as Coca-Cola, Harley-Davidson, FCA Fleet, Racing Electronics, WinCraft Inc., FLUIDYNE Racing Products, Petty Family Foundation, Krispy Kreme Doughnuts, Headbands of Hope, Piedmont Moving Systems, Blue-Emu, Select-a-Vision, Heated Wear and Goody’s.

The Yamaha bLU cRU Road Racers Are Looking To Be Big Men On Campus In Utah This Weekend– Round Five of the 2017 MotoAmerica AMA/FIM North American Road Racing Championship is this weekend at Utah Motorsports Campus in Tooele, UT, and the Yamaha bLU cRU road racers are looking forward to turning laps and striving for victories aboard their YZF-R1 and YZF-R6 machines on UMC’s 3.048-mile, 15-turn Outer Course.

Monster Energy/Yamalube/Yamaha Factory Racing: Beaubier & Hayes

Two-time and defending MotoAmerica Superbike Champion Cameron Beaubier is currently in second place in the 2017 points standings, just 14 points out of the Championship lead, and he’s coming to the part of the season where the Californian will be racing at tracks much closer to his home.

Cameron commented, “Utah is a fun track, and it always makes for great battles. The team and I are ready to go to work and try to put my #1 Monster Energy/Yamalube/Yamaha Factory Racing R1 Superbike up front where it belongs. I’m looking forward to racing in the western part of the country for the next few races. Also, my brother Ezra will be racing an R6 in Superstock 600 at Utah, so I’m excited to cheer him on!”

Four-time AMA Superbike Champion Josh Hayes is currently ranked fourth in points aboard his #4 Yamaha R1 Superbike, and he’s ready to go forth (see a pattern here?) and add another win or two at Utah to the race victory that he got earlier this season at VIRginia International Raceway.

“I’ve always enjoyed the track at UMC,” Josh said. “And I’m looking forward to trying to right the wrongs from Road Atlanta and Road America. Traditionally, the track has suited both me and my Yamaha R1 fairly well. I expect there’ll be some great racing for the fans to enjoy.”

Superbike Superpole (Qualifying) is on Saturday at 11:30 AM MST, Superbike Race 1 will go green on Saturday at 3:30 PM MST, and Superbike Race 2 is on Sunday at 3:30 PM MST.

Monster Energy/Yamalube/Yamaha Extended Service/Graves/Yamaha: Gerloff & Beach

In MotoAmerica’s middleweight racing class, the quest for the Supersport Championship is a hotly contested one between Monster Energy/Yamalube/Yamaha Extended Service/Graves/Yamaha teammates Garrett Gerloff and JD Beach. Each rider has notched three wins so far this season, and just four points separate Championship leader Garrett from second-place JD. Garrett will try to put an end to JD’s Utah four-race winning streak, with the Kentuckian having notched double wins at UMC for the past two years in a row.

“Miller is a challenging racetrack,” Garrett said. “With the altitude, and also, the hot weather that we’re expected to have this weekend, it’ll make for an interesting few days in the desert! I really love the fast, flowing nature of the track, though. It suits the way I like to ride a motorcycle. So, all in all, I’m excited for another weekend and another race, and I’m going to do the best I can, just like always.”

JD commented. “I’m really looking forward to racing at Utah Motorsports Campus. I’ve had some good fortune there in the past, and it’s a track that I like a lot. This season has been a blast so far, racing the brand-new 2017 Yamaha R6. I’m looking forward to getting back to work with my crew and having fun, which I always do when I’m racing!”

Supersport Qualifying at Utah Motorsports Campus is Saturday at 9:20 AM MST, Supersport Race 1 is scheduled for Saturday at 2:25 PM MST, and Supersport Race 2 will go green on Sunday at 2:25 PM MST.

HANG ON FOR ANOTHER REALLY BAD JOKE– The IRS suspected a fishing boat owner wasn’t paying proper wages to his Deckhand and sent an agent to investigate him.

IRS AUDITOR: “I need a list of your employees and how much you pay them”.

Boat Owner: “Well, there’s Clarence, my deckhand, he’s been with me for 3 years. I pay him $1,000 a week plus free room and board. Then there’s the mentally challenged guy. He works about 18 hours every day and does about 90% of the work around here. He makes about $10 per week, pays his own room and board, and I buy him a bottle of Bacardi rum and a dozen Budweisers every Saturday night so he can cope with life. He also gets to sleep with my wife occasionally”.

IRS AUDITOR: “That’s the guy I want to talk to – the mentally challenged one”.

Boat Owner: “That would be me. What would you like to know” ? ?

QUICK GUN NUT REPORT– Choosing the Best Pocket Pistol for Concealed Carry
by Sheriff Jim Wilson – Friday, June 9, 2017

Small, defensive pocket pistols are becoming more and more popular with citizens who need a gun for concealed carry. One of the reasons for this is because American firearm manufacturers are currently building some fine handguns in this category, like the recently introduced Ruger LCP II. Another reason for the popularity of pocket pistols is ammunition companies have also stepped up to the plate by continuing to develop defensive loads that are a vast improvement over what was available in even the recent past. However, it has been said everything is a tradeoff, and this is certainly true with regard to carrying a pocket pistol for personal defense.

To begin with, by its very nature, the best pocket pistol for personal defense is a good deal smaller than the service pistol. This means the various controls on a pocket pistol—the safety, magazine release, etc.—are also smaller. The shooter who does most of his training with the larger service pistol may find he is not nearly as adept or as fast in running the smaller handgun.

A serious defensive shooter will do most of his training with the handgun he carries most of the time. With the pocket pistol, this means practicing your speed loads and tactical loads on a regular basis. Dry-fire practice and defensive presentation should be done from the actual position you carry your pocket pistol. It will immediately become clear that presentation is not anywhere as fast from a pocket holster, waistband, purse or other deep-concealment location. It is also not nearly as quick to load a handgun when you have to dig your extra ammo out of a pocket or other less-accessible location.

While a bit slower, with thought and practice these manipulations can become smoother and quicker, although they will probably never be as fast as the same drill from an exposed hip holster and magazine pouch.

Another consideration regarding the use of pocket pistols is accuracy. While modern handguns of good manufacture generally provide adequate accuracy for defensive purposes, the shorter sight radius of even the best pocket pistols allows a lot of room for operator error. Essentially, the shorter the barrel and the smaller the handgun, the harder it is to make quick, accurate shots. Again, the defensive shooter deals with this problem through practice.

A common drill is making a head shot on your target from the 3-yard line. With a service pistol from an open hip holster, most people can learn to draw and hit in about 1.5 seconds—some do it a good deal faster. However, when drawing from deep concealment starting with hands down at the side, the same accurate hit with the pocket pistol will take about 2.5 seconds, and that’s only if the shooter has been practicing with his small handgun.

By the way, starting with your hand on your defensive pistol will cut those times down quite a bit. It’s another reason to be alert for danger and prepared to deal with it. Inconspicuously getting your hand on or near your defensive handgun at the first sign of potential trouble is generally not considered brandishing and, in the real world, is an excellent idea.

Another important consideration regarding pocket pistols has to do with ammunition. While this is not a condemnation of ammunition manufacturers, the fact is even the best pocket pistols can be picky about what ammo they like. Failures to feed and, occasionally, to eject can occur even with good quality ammunition. There may be a lot of reasons for this failure, but the fact is it occurs often—and one certainly doesn’t want to discover this in the middle of a gunfight.

For this reason, it is important to thoroughly test concealed-carry ammunition in a particular pocket pistol. Testing several brands with different bullet configurations is always a good idea when considering ammunition for any defensive handgun. It is particularly critical when considering the pocket pistol.

While we are on the subject of pocket-pistol ammunition, it is important to consider the subject of recoil and its effect on performance and accuracy. Most shooters consider a 9 mm +P load fired from a 34-ounce service pistol to be quite easy to manage. However, fire that same round from a 17-ounce pocket pistol and it quickly becomes apparent there is a world of difference. Recoil of the smaller handgun smacks the shooting hand with much more authority. The smaller grip of the pocket pistol allows the gun to move around in the shooting hand a good deal more.

In smaller handguns, I find the .40 S&W cartridge to be a real challenge to shoot quickly and accurately because of recoil. The wise shooter is smart to try out several guns, in various chamberings, before settling on the best pocket pistol to be carried. In addition, finding one’s own recoil and performance threshold is vital when considering a pocket pistol.

In the movies, we see the bad guy hit with a pistol round and get knocked off of his feet while blood flies everywhere. In the real world, even with large-caliber service pistols, this is generally not the case. Even at close range, a violent criminal may not show any immediate signs of having received a fatal hit.

This is especially true when using a pocket pistol.

One of the reasons for this is because the pocket pistol’s short barrel delivers its bullet at a much lower velocity than what is generally printed in ballistic charts. Low velocities may cause even the best defensive bullet fired from the best pocket pistol to fail to properly penetrate and expand. At these marginal velocities, the criminal’s type of clothing becomes another important factor. Heavy winter clothing, for instance, may reduce the bullet’s penetration and can also cause failure of hollow points to fully expand.

For these reasons, the defensive shooter should practice a technique commonly called the “Failure Drill.” If, after two shots to center mass, the violent criminal is still standing and still presenting an immediate threat, a third shot should be quickly delivered to the head in an effort to impact the central nervous system and put him down. While the “Failure Drill” is an important technique to practice with any defensive handgun, it is especially vital with the pocket pistol because of the gun’s reduced velocity and increased difficulty in delivering accurate fire.

None of my comments about pocket pistols are meant to suggest they are not important tools for the armed citizen. I’ve carried one—a small revolver—for more years than I care to think about. What you should realize is the pocket pistol, for various reasons, is not an easy handgun to shoot well. It takes a lot of thought and research to find the best pocket pistol suited to an individual shooter. It takes a good deal of practice, lots of practice, in fact, to learn to shoot it well enough to trust it with your life.

So, what are you complaining about? Spending more time in gun shops and practicing at the range is far from a bad thing.

THE BIKERNET REAL INTERNATIONAL NEWS– Proof That The World Is Nuts!

In Lebanon, men are legally allowed to have sex with animals, but the animals must be female. Having sexual relations with a male animal is punishable by death.

(Like THAT makes sense.)

In Bahrain, a male doctor may legally examine a woman’s genitals, but is prohibited from looking directly at them during the examination. He may only see their reflection in a mirror.

(Do they look different reversed?)

Muslims are banned from looking at the genitals of a corpse. This also applies to undertakers. The sex organs of the deceased must be covered with a brick or piece of wood at all times.

(A brick?)

The penalty for masturbation in Indonesia is decapitation. (Glad I don’t live in Indonesia!)

(Much worse than ‘going blind!’)

There are men in Guam whose full-time job is to travel the countryside and deflower young virgins, who pay them for the privilege of having sex for the first time.

Reason: Under Guam law, it is expressly forbidden for virgins to marry.

(Let’s just think for a minute: Is there any job anywhere else in the world that even comes close to this?)

In Hong Kong, a betrayed wife is legally allowed to kill her adulterous husband, but may only do so with her bare hands.

The husband’s illicit lover, on the other hand, may be killed in any manner desired.

(Ah! Justice!)

Topless saleswomen are legal in Liverpool, England – but only in tropical fish stores.

(But of course!)

In Cali, Colombia, a woman may only have sex with her husband, and the first time this happens, her mother must be in the room to witness the act.

(Makes one shudder at the thought.)

In Santa Cruz, Bolivia, it is illegal for a man to have sex with a woman and her daughter at the same time.

(I presume this was a big enough problem that they had to pass this law?)

In Maryland, it is illegal to sell condoms from vending machines with one exception: Condoms may be dispensed from a vending machine only in places where alcoholic beverages are sold for consumption on the premises.’

(Is this a great country or what?)

Well… not as great as Guam!

Banging your head against a wall uses 150 calories an hour.

(Who volunteers for these tests?)

The Ant can lift 50 times its own weight, can pull 30 times its own weight and always falls over on its right side when intoxicated.

(From drinking little bottles of ???)

(Did our Government pay for this research??)

Butterflies taste with their feet.

(Ah, geez.)

An Ostrich’s eye is bigger than its brain.

(I know some people like that.)

Starfish don’t have brains.

(I know some people like that, too.)

And, the best for last?

Turtles can breathe through their ass.

(And I thought I had bad breath in the morning!)

Thank you all for reading this.

If you need to reach me in the future, I will be in Guam!

UNCLE MONKEY ON ROAD BLOCKS–
So there you are rolling along the great highway of life when you come face to face with a roadblock. It is one of those little hiccups that come with life. Most people roll up and ask what’s all the hub-bub about.

It seems they are got a report of some illegal activity and are following up on it and as such they are searching the vehicles. You grumble about the holdup but pop open the saddlebags, and pop open the trunk. You comment about the weather and how you are happy you’re not the one having to stand out there in the heat. You offer bottled water but the officer politely declines and sends you on your way.

For others it is just another example of the man trying to stick it to you. You demand that he cannot search you without a warrant. So there you are sitting on the side of the road as they call it in. Time and money wasted until a couple hours later a warrant finally arrives. They search your vehicle and find nothing, which you knew. You knew you hadn’t done anything wrong but hey, no one infringed on your rights even though you are now four hours late.

And yet there are those who when asked refuse and take off in a high speed pursuit. As local, county and state join the chase they curse the justice department. They did nothing wrong. Soon choppers are in the air and the Local 4 is live streaming the whole thing. It’s a man-hunt. You’re innocent. Why won’t they just drop the whole thing?

When it ends in a fierce crash and law finally hauls you before the court it is for a litany of charges. You will be looking at hard time, not because you were the one they were looking for but because you thought you were above the law.

HOLY SHIT— Today has been nuts. Lots of interruptions with Michael Lichter trying to make deadlines, while my Grandson is scrambling to ride something, anything, to the Born Free pre-party. So, he’s working on me for the Mudflap FXR to fly to the Born Free party at the flat track races in Costa Mesa.

I thought about trying my hand at rough engraving last week. Then I ran into a young builder, Andy Carter did the same on his flathead 80. I was inspired. I’m still a kid at heart.

I hope Eric Bennett, from Bennett’s Performance finished his bike in time. It’s going to be amazing and Michael Lichter may shoot it on Monday at his shop. Here’s a shot of the Deny 528 Born Free entry.

I gotta get outta here.
