Hey,

I’m probably in Wyoming heading to Sturgis. The clan is taking over for me, while I’m on the road. Thanks to all the readers and staff who are holding it together, while I drink all the whiskey between Barstow and Deadwood. Gotta get there somehow. A big Indian is chasing me.

STURGIS MUSEUM GAINS SUPPORT — Allstate, Coke, Kuryakyn, Rockwell & Victory Step Up For Hall Of Fame Induction Ceremony

Sturgis, South Dakota, August 3, 2016 – The Sturgis Motorcycle Museum’s mission is twofold: to honor those who have made a positive and significant impact on the sport and lifestyle, as well as paying tribute to the heritage of the Sturgis Rally. A record number of sponsors have stepped up to make the Class of 2016 induction ceremony something special, in addition to the introduction of a special “Lifetime Achievement” award to the legendary Arlen Ness.

“Victory Motorcycles has worked with Arlen for many years now,” says Rod Krois, General Manager of Victory Motorcycles. “Arlen has always been the head of his time, and we are proud to be the Presenting Sponsor at this important event.” Already a Sturgis Museum Hall of Fame member, Arlen was a unanimous choice for the inaugural Lifetime Achievement honors.

Joining the folks from Victory is a new sponsor for this year: Rockwell Watches. The timepiece pros are the Award & Ceremony Sponsor for the Class of 2016. “It is great to have Rockwell making sure everyone has a good time,” quips Sturgis Motorcycle Museum and Hall Of Fame Executive Director Myrick Robbins.

Also new for this year are the Allstate Guardians Of The Ride, five individuals from across the country who have been recognized for their dedication to protecting their fellow riders and promoting safety in their communities. “Allstate has been an advocate for the motorcycle community for many years, and their Guardians Of The Ride initiative is aligned with the goals of the Museum,” says Robbins. “In addition to being our Class of 2016 Gift Sponsor, Allstate is bringing all five of the Guardians to the Sturgis Rally to help shine a national spotlight on their efforts and encourage riders across the country to celebrate the positive impact they’ve had on the riding community and we are honored to have them in attendance.”

Capturing these moments for posterity comes courtesy of Kuryakn, who returns as the Photo Sponsor. “Andy Kawa from Kuryakyn did a phenomenal job last year and we are more than happy to welcome him back,” adds the Museum’s director of business development, Tigra Tsujikawa. Adding to Andy’s photographic efforts will be special video presentations for each member of the Class of 2016 produced by Todd Huffman (of The Motocross Files fame) and narrated by hall of fame broadcaster Dave Despain (who’s new show launched on MAVTV this season:
http://www.mavtv.com/shows/the-dave-despain-show.html)

“We would also like to acknowledge our friends and neighbors from around the Black Hills area who do so much for the Museum and the community year round,” says Robbins. “Without the help, guidance and partnership of the Board of Directors and Black Hills Harley-Davidson, Buffalo Chip, Indian Motorcycles of Sturgis, Lookout Mountain and the Rushmore Regional Business Development team, none of this would be possible.”

The Class Of 2016
The 2016 inductees into the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum Hall of Fame represent every aspect of what makes motorcycling great. One of the most diverse groups ever inducted into the Hall of Fame, the Class of 2016 and Freedom Fighter Award winner Gary Wetzel will be honored during the annual Rally on August 10, 2016.

Bert Baker – V-Twin motorcycle drivetrain innovator, businessman and patriot, Bert Baker is committed to using materials, labor, creativity, know how and grit born of America.

Jerry Covington – Whether it is on TV or the cover of virtually every biker magazine in the world, it is hard to miss custom builder Jerry Covington. What does get overlooked is Covington’s behind the scenes commitment to the motorcycle community, his selfless donation of time and resources to those less fortunate through has various charity projects.

John Penton –
One of the most influential figures in off-road motorcycling in the world, John Penton developed a legendary brand of motorcycles that bore his name (better known as KTM today). He also founded Hi-Point, an accessory and distribution company that had 50% of aftermarket sales in the U.S. and set the mold for modern distribution powerhouses.

Gary Spellman –
Using motorcycle as means to further charitable causes, philanthropist Gary Spellman has been quite effective in utilizing motorcycles to raise money for charities benefiting first responders and their surviving families. He has also brought major business owners into the family of motorcyclists as well as creating the Peace, Love and Happiness Charity Ride with fellow Hall Of Famer John Paul Dejoria.

Buddy Stubbs –
Talk about being born into the business, Buddy Stubbs was raised in his father’s Harley dealership in Decatur, Illinois and has spent his entire life in and around dealerships, including opening two of his own in the greater Phoenix area. This year marks his 50th year as a dealer and more significantly an ambassador to the motorcycle lifestyle.

Gary Wetzel – 2016 Freedom Fighter Award winner. In keeping with the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum’s mission to Honor the Ride, a special “Freedom Fighter” award recognizing an individual who has fought to protect the rights of motorcyclists was instituted. For 2016, the Freedom Fighter is Gary Wetzel, a Vietnam Veteran and Congressional Medal of Honor recipient who has been active for decades in raising awareness of not only Veteran’s issues, but also protecting riders rights.

I have a 2015 650 Burgman and want a slower transition when turning. Can I use a bias tire on the front and keep the radial on the rear?

–Dewayne Skadsem

The difference between a radial tire and the bias tire the radial is the material and the way it is laid and formed to make the layer or belts on a tire radial is usually steel or polyester and bias is usually just rubber
and NO you should not use one radial and one bias tire

MASSACHUSETTS OFFICIALS QUESTION AG GUN BAN —

Friday, July 29, 2016 Massachusetts Officials Question AG Gun Ban
More

As we reported last week, Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey unilaterally banned many common firearms via executive action. AG Healey’s “enforcement notice” has now come under attack by officials within the Massachusetts government, including many from her own party.

In a letter to AG Healey, Democratic State Representative Harold P. Naughton Jr. noted that “this recent directive, concerning so called ‘copies and duplicates’ of banned weapons in the current law is not only confusing, but the vagueness of the guidance has raised significant questions over which firearms are now banned or could be banned in the future.” Signaling his belief that Healey had overstepped her authority, Rep. Naughton cautioned “I strongly believe that any such review of our gun control laws should be a legislative matter to be considered by both the House and Senate along with public input.”

Naughton was not alone in his criticisms. 58 of his colleagues in the legislature signed another letter calling in to question the constitutionality of AG Healey’s action where they wrote:

For the last 18 years, the law has been implemented and enforced consistently, both by your office and your predecessors. Your new directive, which has been presented by your office as nothing more than a closing of ‘loopholes’ in the current law, appears in fact to be much more than that: the enforcement of a whole new law that unfairly infringes on the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding gun owners in Massachusetts.

Possibly the harshest critique of the substance of AG Healey’s new “enforcement notice” came from Daniel Bennett, the Massachusetts Secretary of Public Safety and Security. Secretary Bennett paid particular attention to the vagueness of the two-part test articulated in the “enforcement notice.” He raised substantial concerns that the new test could be read to apply to nearly any semi-automatic firearm when he directly asked AG Healey “Does your enforcement notice mean that your office considers any weapon, even a pistol like the M1911 that has these characteristics to be an assault weapon?”

Supporting the concerns raised by Secretary Bennett, Governor Charles D. Baker further noted that “ambiguities in [the] notice require clarification for responsible gun owners who simply want to follow the rules and for thousands of gun owners who were told they were following the rules for eighteen years.”

While this widespread government opposition to the action of a sitting attorney general may seem surprising, it is indicative of the clearly unlawful nature and vagueness of the “enforcement notice.” NRA continues to pursue all legal and legislative remedies to reverse this unilateral executive gun ban.

MAKE GOOD USE OF THE ROADS: RIDE A MOTORCYCLE!–
Motorcyclists know that riding a bike isn’t just great fun, it’s the best and most efficient way to travel as well.

Motorcycles are efficient

Motorcycles make efficient use of road space in congested areas, require less parking space than cars, have a lower environmental impact and running costs, offer an affordable option where public transport is limited and walking or cycling is unrealistic.

There is a motorcycle for everyone

Motorcycles offer a credible alternative and there is a model for everyone, from the nimble city scooter to the long-range touring motorcycle.

Mobility is a challenge

In the European Union, over 60% of the population lives in urban areas where about 85% of the economic activity is produced. Most European cities are expected to keep growing, along with the demand for personal transport. Many urban areas throughout Europe are chronically congested and this congestion costs Europe €100 billion per year. Reducing congestion, pollution and accident risk while at the same time increasing mobility is major challenge for all major cities in Europe. Powered two-wheelers are a big part of the solution.

Greener cities

Electric scooters and motorcycles offer a high potential for urban and short-range transport. Their introduction could be accelerated with awareness campaigns, scrapping schemes for older vehicles, and the installation of more charging stations.

Safer vehicles & safety behaviour

In the majority of accidents, motorcyclists are not at fault, but are overlooked by car drivers. Awareness and training campaigns can help solve this problem. There is safety in numbers: with more scooters and motorcycles on the road, the accident risk decreases as car drivers learn to share the road with motorcyclists.

What can be done to promote the use of powered two-wheelers in cities?
• Access to bus and taxi lanes where possible
• Allow filtering for better sharing of the road space
• Allow parking on sidewalks where appropriate
• Privileged inner city access and exemption from congestion charges
• Inner city motorcycle and scooter parking areas, free of charge
• Advanced stop lines at traffic lights, shared with bicycles
• Favourable taxation schemes
• Awareness campaigns addressing the advantages of motorcycle use

The Federation of European Motorcyclists’ Associations (FEMA) represents European motorcyclists. FEMA’s purpose is to promote, protect and preserve motorcycling. FEMA’s mission is to promote riders’ interests and defend riders’ rights throughout Europe.

TRIUMPH MOTORCYCLES CONFIRMS NEW WORLD LAND SPEED RECORD ATTEMPT —

•Federation Internationale de Motocyclisme (FIM) World Record attempt to take place at the Bonneville Speedway, Bonneville Salt Flats, Utah – August 2016

•TT legend and multiple speed world record holder Guy Martin confirmed as rider for 2016 world record attempt

•The Triumph Infor Rocket Streamliner, powered by two Triumph Rocket III engines, produces a staggering 1,000 bhp

•Global cloud applications provider Infor and clothing brand Belstaff announced as 2016 title sponsors

ATLANTA (August 1, 2016) – Triumph Motorcycles, the iconic British motorcycle brand, has confirmed that it will return to the legendary Bonneville Salt Flats in August 2016 to break the motorcycle world land speed record. Triumph’s aim is to exceed the current record that stands at 376.363 mph, using its purpose built 1,000 bhp Triumph Infor Rocket Streamliner.

Riding the purpose-built Triumph Infor Rocket Streamliner over the measured mile will be Isle of Man TT racer and multiple speed record holder Guy Martin. Title partner for Triumph’s 2016 record attempt will be global cloud applications provider Infor, with further support from clothing brand Belstaff.

The Triumph Infor Rocket features a carbon Kevlar monocoque construction and two turbocharged Triumph Rocket III engines producing a combined 1,000 bhp at 9,000 rpm. Developed between Triumph, Hot Rod Conspriacy and Carpenter Racing, the motorcycle is 25.5 feet long, 2 feet wide and 3 feet tall. Powered by methanol fuel, the bike is competing in the Division C (streamlined motorcycle) category.

Triumph has a history of breaking the land speed record, holding the title of ‘World’s Fastest Motorcycle’ from 1955 to 1970. The record-breaking Triumph Streamliners included: Devil’s Arrow, Texas Cee-gar, Dudek Streamliner and Gyronaut X1, the former achieving a top speed of 245.667 mph. Today’s record, held by Rocky Robinson since 2010 riding the Top Oil-Ack Attack streamliner, sits at 376.363 mph.

Guy Martin commented: “I can’t wait to take the Triumph Infor Rocket Streamliner onto the salt at Bonneville for the first time this summer. The Triumph engineers have built an amazing machine, giving us the very best chance to beat the two-wheeled land speed record.”

The iconic Bonneville name was conceived following Johnny Allen’s land-speed record runs at the Salt Flats in September 1956, when he reached the record-breaking speed of 193.72 mph. The first T120 Bonneville model was unveiled at the Earls Court Bike Show and went on sale in 1959.

TALKING POINTS: A BILL TO ADDRESS MOTORCYCLE PROFILING —
Sponsor/Support H.Res.831

-Background & Overview

o On July 13, Congressman Reid Ribble of Wisconsin introduced House Resolution 831 which addresses the issue of motorcycle profiling. Congressman Tim Walberg of Michigan is also an original co-sponsor.

o As a member of the Motorcycle Riders Foundation, we support legislation that would define and attempt to limit the practice of profiling of motorcyclists by law enforcement.

o Two States (Maryland and Washington) have already passed similar measures into law.

-Why This Issue is Important

o Increasingly, motorcyclists feel singled out by law enforcement because of their appearance, apparel, or because they are simply riding a motorcycle.

o According to a recently conducted national survey, over 30% of respondents felt they had been profiled by law enforcement despite not committing any traffic infractions.

o The stereotype of the “criminal biker,” has been exacerbated by television shows like, “Sons of Anarchy” that depict motorcyclists as dangerous and unlawful citizens; responsible motorcyclists are suffering the consequences.

o Riding a motorcycle or wearing related attire is an individual’s chosen form of expression and is protected under the First Amendment.

o Further, the Fourth Amendment requires that law enforcement have a reasonable suspicion that a crime has been, is being, or is about to be committed before stopping a suspect and yet, over 30% of survey respondents believe they have been pulled over with no apparent reason and are victims of a “stop and frisk.”

o Riding a motorcycle or wearing motorcycle apparel does not equate bikers to criminals. We believe that through education and awareness, this issue can be addressed and mitigated.

-What Can Be Done?
o House Resolution 831 is the first step in addressing the profiling of motorcyclists at the national level.

o The Resolution promotes public awareness of motorcycle profiling and encourages

collaboration and communication between law enforcement and the motorcycle community.

o Further, it urges state law enforcement officials to condemn motorcycle profiling in written policies and training materials.

o As H.Res.831 gains additional co-sponsors and advances through the House, it makes motorcycle profiling a national discussion and helps to raise awareness for those states considering the perusal of similar laws like those in Maryland and Washington.

***Please consider co-sponsoring H.Res.831. You can contact Megan Ekstrom, Vice-President of Government Affairs for the Motorcycle Riders Foundation at megan@mrf.org if you have any questions, comments or concerns.***

BRASS BALLS ADDRESSES BIKERNET READER COMMENT— Last week we ran a letter from a reader asking about Brass Balls Motorcycles and if they honored their customer commitments. They did. Here’s a comment from the boss, Dar Holdsworth.

Yes, we have made good with our customers. There was only a handful of them who made deposits and had not received their bikes.

Since our reorganization, we have made good with each customer and are actually in the final stages of the last two builds.

We are very grateful for our customers. We always have been. We simply got into a tough spot where overhead out paced production and put us in a negative cashflow challenge.

We are happy to report we are diversifying our offering so we don’t find ourselves in that position again. We are also receiving new bike orders and all is well.

Thank you so much. I hope things continue to go well at Bikernet.com

Cheers,

Dar

PENNSYLVANIA “RIDE ON RED” LEGISLATION SIGNED BY GOVERNOR —

Pennsylvania has joined 16 other states in recognizing that motorcycles often do not trip the sensors that activate stop lights, mostly in rural areas. The new bill, called “Ride on Red,” has been signed into law by Gov. Tom Wolf. It allows drivers to proceed through a red light after pausing to make sure it is safe to proceed without infringing on anyone else’s right-of-way. Now, when a traffic signal is unresponsive to a driver, the driver can legally drive through the red light, rather than waiting at the intersection.

The bill was initially only for motorcycle riders, but was expanded to include other vehicles to allow drivers to legally proceed on a red light safely if their vehicle is not detected by sensors. It was signed into law on July 20 and takes effect around September 18, 2016.

The author of the bill, Rep. Stephen Bloom, said, “Governor Tom Wolf Wednesday signed into law legislation, including provisions, to give motorcyclists and other drivers the option to proceed with caution through an intersection when trapped at an unresponsive traffic light.”

“If the vehicle detection system fails to recognize the vehicle and the driver has come to a complete stop, the driver must then make sure it is safe to continue, and only then would they be able to lawfully proceed with caution through the intersection,” Bloom explained.

“This law does not give drivers a free pass, but ensures a safe and legal option to avoid the danger and inconvenience of being trapped in perpetuity at a locked red light,” Bloom said. “This issue is more common than many people realize, especially on rural roads or during late hours when long periods often elapse before a heavier vehicle comes along to finally trip the unresponsive light.”

Pennsylvania joins a growing number of states, most recently Indiana, that are passing laws to remedy the problem of stop light sensors not recognizing all vehicles.

A couple worn t-shirts, several pairs of fresh socks. You wonder if you should bring rain gear but decide to risk the wet for more room. Everything rolled tightly in a couple Mexican blankets and tarps strapped to the bars. You lay out your 5-Ball Racing Special Ops vest on the work bench. You take your 3/8″ to 3/4″ wrenches and wrap several feet of duct and electrical tape around the middles before tucking them into a pocket. Several feet of wire fill out the lower part of the multi bit screw driver. Spare plugs, a couple brass cable ends and mechanic’s wire find homes in several other pockets. You tuck the magazine with the spread you were telling Jumbo about and a couple dime store pulp books into the magazine pouch Bandit was thoughtful enough to include in the back of the vest. You look over your bike one last time checking to make sure everything is tight, everything is within spec. The rear tire is worn pretty badly but it should get you there no problem before you sacrifice it in the burn out pit. A mental check list is crossed off in your mind one last time. You’re satisfied, if you forgot anything you can pick it up along the way. You’re hesitant to return to the house, anxious to get out on the road. The highway calling, the run beckoning you to get there. If you straight shot it you could be there by midnight, one at the latest. You ring Johnny on the line. He answers with “Ready to roll.” as he is thinking the same as you. You tell him to meet at exit 29. A kiss on the old lady’s cheek and you roar out of the neighborhood. Traffic is heavy as cages snail their way home; luckily you are swimming against the grain. You spot Johnny waiting at the top of the ramp. The bark from his drag pipes rises above your Samson’s as he charges to speed slipping in beside you without losing pace. Seven hours at full throttle. Seven hours to freedom.

I STARTED THE DAY — in a good mood. But it turns out spending 10 hours hunched over the computer drains that shit right out of me. I also started the day with coffee and I can tell you, I’m not ending the day with coffee. Rather… something from the Bikernet liquor cabinet. The last decision of the day, tequila or whiskey? What am I saying, there is no contest.

I asked Bandit to send pictures from the road. For those of us who are unable to go to Sturgis. I received these.

I’m sure as the week wears on we’ll start to receive more from Bandit and the good stuff from our Bikernet Official Photographers. I was promised timely photos and that’s what I want! That or there will be hell to pay!
