THE 9-11 TRIBUTE TO FREEDOM NEWS FOR 9-11-14

Hey,

It’s 9-11 and this is going to be an interesting news. We lost lives on 9-11 and went to War. But we continue to lose freedoms, and we should quit torturing all of our citizens daily as they board airplanes. What the hell?

Recently in the Week Magazine, an editor, Theunis Bates said that more guns don’t mean less violence, that gun training doesn’t help. So what is he saying, don’t teach your kids self-defense or how to swim, it won’t help? What a jackass.

I just don’t get how editor’s can spout, in the free press, how freedom and education doesn’t work. First, they are wrong and second, they should do everything to support Freedom in this country, not just their freedom… But don’t get me started. We all know the benefits of Motorcycle training, but Theunis doesn’t.

Here’s Paul Yaffe being inducted into the Sturgis Hall of Fame for his charity efforts, and his creative achievements. Without freedom he wouldn’t be standing there.

And the other shot from Rogue is former Hall of Fame inductees. Most of these guys are freedom fighters. They devoted a major chunk of their lives to keep us riding somewhat free! Join your motorcycle rights group and learn from this scruffy bunch.

Let’s hit the news and give thanks for what’s left of our Freedom and make a pledge to join the motorcycle rights group of your choice and become educated about your freedoms.

BIKERNET PHILOSOPHER DISCUSSES 9 11 2014–The lessons of Life are repeated until they are learned.

When the power of love overcomes the love of power the world will know peace. –Jimi Hendrix

It’s kind of hard to think that it has been 13 years since the terrible day of 911. I wonder what lessons our governments have learned since that fateful day. Have they made the world a better place, a safer place, a happier place?

Have they made Peace with our neighbors? Are we more united as Canadian and American citizens? Have they dealt with the problem? Albert Einstein said, “You can never solve a problem at the same level of consciousness that it was created in.” Have our leaders found new and better ways to create Peace on this planet? I don’t think so, to confirm that just listen to the news. I wonder if our leaders have ever heard of the definition of insanity, keep doing what you are doing and expect a change.

I am not sure what the leaders can do, but I Know that I can make personal changes to make this a better world. A reporter once asked the Dalai Lama how we can make Peace and his simple answer was “make friends,” so I will make more friends.

Mother Theresa said that “Peace begins with a smile,” so I will smile more. The Dalai Lama also said, “We can never obtain peace in the outer world until we make peace with ourselves,” so I will learn to build inner Peace so I can bring peace to others.

May our leaders take all the energy and resources that are spent on war and direct them to Peace.

May your day be filled with Peace
Namaste
And So It Is

HANG ON THE BIKERNET BAD JOKE LIBRARY JUST OPENED-
Did you hear about the gal who was sitting at a bar when a man came up to her and asked, “Where have you been all my life”? She replied, “Well, the first half of it, I wasn’t born yet.”

CANNONBALL UPDATES--Dottie Mattern starts her Cannonball final countdown.

Dottie Mattern, a motorcycle enthusiast who will celebrate her 70th birthday during the Motorcycle Cannonball Coast-to-Coast Endurance Ride during September, has entered the final countdown for the September 5 launch of the big event. Dottie and more than a hundred participants will ride more than 4,000 miles from Daytona Beach, Florida to Tacoma, Washington in 16 days. The kicker is that they are all riding pre-1937 motorcycles! Dottie will be competing aboard her beautiful green 1936 Indian Scout.

But for Dottie, the Cannonball is much more than a joy ride. She has lost two close family members to colon cancer, and as a colon cancer survivor herself, she will be riding to raise funds for the Colon Cancer Alliance, Inc. and the Antique Motorcycle Foundation, Inc. Proceeds from Dottie’s ride will be divided equally between the two non-profit organizations. On the eve of her departure, she has already raised more than $10,000 in charitable contributions. Her goal is $70,000, to match her 70 years as an active motorcyclist and woman-athlete.

In addition to riding her Scout in the mountains of North Carolina to sharpen her skills and test her machine, Dottie has had an active summer of tennis, golf, and workouts in the gym under the supervision of a personal trainer. She explains, “Riding one of these vintage motorcycles is not like riding a modern machine. It takes a lot more work, and the roughly 300 miles we ride each day on the Cannonball will be very physically demanding. Performing well in a multi-day event like this requires stamina, physical conditioning, and a positive attitude.”

Dottie’s sponsors, which are acknowledged on her Ford chase vehicle, include Classic Motorcycle Consignments, Bill Wood of DGM Communications, Greg Konrath of Marathon, Florida Garbage Service, Jim Hughes State Farm Insurance, Tom and Kathy Wrenn, The Wrightson-Ramsing Foundation and Dennis Palmgren, Richard Jodoin of Dimple Motor Oil Magnets, and Bill Campbell.

Dottie’s 1936 Indian was prepared for the Cannonball by Dennis Craig with the assistance of Bob Courboin, who rebuilt two generators and the lower end of the engine; Bruce Linsday, who supplied a restored speedometer cable; Randy Zorn, who supplied a rare and proper carburetor; and Ken Kelly, who supplied a spare generator. Her chase vehicle driver will be Bruce Gullifer.

BIKERNET HOUSEHOLD ALERT–DO NOT wash your hair in the shower!

I need to share this good advice.

It’s so good to finally get a health warning that is useful!

It involves the shampoo that runs down your body while you are showering. I don’t know why I didn’t figure this out sooner!

I use shampoo in the shower! When I wash my hair, the shampoo runs down my whole body, and printed very clearly on the shampoo label is this warning:

“FOR EXTRA BODY AND VOLUME”

No wonder I have been gaining weight! Well! I got rid of that shampoo and I am going to start showering with Dawn Dishwashing Soap. Its label reads:

“DISSOLVES FAT THAT IS OTHERWISE DIFFICULT TO REMOVE”

Problem solved.

THE LAST MILE AT POMONA?
SOLUTE TO POMONA
It has been announced that the LA Fairplex will no longer have horse racing at their facility after November 1, 2014 so the track may or may not be available in 2015. Motorcycle racing dates back to the late 1940s on the famed Pomona Half-Mile. The promoters are confident that the Flat Track Finals will take place somewhere in 2015, it just may not be Pomona.

So on that note, let’s make this a good one. Be there to give a salute to a racetrack that evokes many memories.

The promoters, Chris Morgan and Charlie Frank, have created a “retro” poster as a tribute to the amazing motorcycle races that have taken place at Pomona. It will be available at the races.

Larry Langley, (larry.mediaguy@gmail.com) is again coordinating the Autograph session and Dennis Kanegae (dennis@ninefiftyone.com) will do the same for the Ascot Reunion. Come on, we want to see all you guys out there.

From 3 to 6 pm enjoy the Gasser Customs Vintage Bike Show, Rockabilly music and PinUp style show! (213) 437 6316)

Well y’all, Looked like more than 2,000 bikes for Don Tilley’s Memorial service. Shut down Statesville for more than an hour moving them across town from the dealership to the high school stadium for the service.

Hundreds of locals lined the roads to pay their respects as we went by. Some NASCAR guys at the service. Rode some of the race bikes over there. Don was so well loved and will be missed by lots of folks.

REGARDING BANDIT’S CHOICE OF AN INDIAN
We’ve talked via email about the various incarnations of the brand before Polaris put their stamp on it. They got it right big time. When I can a Chief is in my future. I have to admit I am a little envious but at the same time I hope you enjoy and ride the shit out of it.

I do hope, knowing you can’t leave things stock, that you don’t mess with it too much as the lines are classic right out of the box. Having said that I did see the factory custom on display here in Daytona Beach and it was a beautiful piece of work.

Thanks for the note. I’m not going to change it much at all. I want to modify the bars to be more traditional Indian, and we are going to carve the underside to the rear fender slightly for the same reason. The rest will be paint and powder. You’ll see it all come together on Bikernet.

THE VINTAGE MOTTO GUZZI OF THE WEEK–This is KRAZY! It’s the Moto Guzzi V8, 500cc, built and run in the mid ’50s it would run 170 MPH back then, after racing it a few times it was so far beyond the tires and brakes of the time, top riders refused to race it.

Fuck!… Four cams , eight carbs and only 500cc, a tuning nightmare. Love it!

INTRODUCING THE LOVE JUGS—Make Your Harley Super Cool!

The Love Jugs Cool-Master is the newest model from Hammerhead Engineering, manufacturers of the Original Love Jugs, the World’s Most Powerful Cooling System for Harley-Davidson motorcycle engines. Its’ innovative patented design helps keep Harley riders cooler…especially in stop and go traffic since V-Twin air cooled engines can approach and exceed 500 degrees.

Temperatures this high will destroy the lubricating capabilities of your engine oil, damage your power plant and generally ruin your riding day by “shutting down”. Its patented dual fan cooling system delivers more cooling air that any other product on the market.

The new Love Jugs Cool-Master features:

• State-of-the-art fan motors deliver the most cooling air (CFM) ever offered in a Harley engine cooling system

• Smaller size fans, coupled with the new compact styling appeals to many enthusiasts concerned with keeping cool and looking cool

• Custom look that’s at home on a $100,000 custom bagger or 25 year old Electra Glide

• Easy to use recessed switches on the solid sleek face of each fan motor

• Lustrous smooth outer band on the fan motor cover gives it a cool custom compact look

• Looks like it is an original OEM part from the factory

• Simple to install…takes less than an hour with no special tools

EMERGENCY 5-BALL CORPORATE MEETING–All the executive officers of The Company were called in to the board room, one by one, until only the newest, most junior executive was left sitting nervously outside.

Finally it was his turn to be summoned. He entered the office to find the chairman and the eight directors seated solemnly around the table. He was invited to join them, which he did with trepidation.

As soon as he sat down the chairman turned to the young man and asked aggressively, “Have you ever slept with Miss Foyt, my secretary?”

“No, certainly not, ” he replied.

“Are you absolutely sure?” asked the chairman.

“Absolutely! I’ve never laid a finger on her.”

“You’d swear to that?”

“Yes sir, I swear, I’ve never slept with your secretary. “

“Good … then you fire her.”

Woman Claims Spaghetti Strainer as Religious Headwear in Driver’s License Photo

An Oklahoma woman recently wore a spaghetti strainer on her head while taking a driver’s license photo, citing the state’s allowance of religious headwear.

Shawna Hammond is a Pastafarian and said the colander represents freedom, KTLA’s sister-station KFOR-TV reported Saturday.

“For me the colander represents freedom, our freedom of religion, and to whatever religion that we prefer, or even lack of religion,” Hammond said.

Pastafarianism, also known as the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster, was created in 2005 and is viewed by some as a tongue-in-cheek way of questioning religion, although the official website says it is a real religion.

“A man named Bobby Henderson wrote an open letter to the Kansas State Board of Education. It was actually about teaching creationism in school and he came up with the flying spaghetti monster and it had just as much merit,” Hammond said.

Hammond said she was allowed to take the photo because she obeyed the state’s laws that requires people remove their glasses and wear a religious headpiece that does not cover their face, create shadows, or display text or logos.

“She giggled, gave me a funny look and asked me what religion I was. I told her I was a Pastafarian,” Hammond said.

Living in Oklahoma as a non-religious person is difficult and Hammond was happy she was able to express herself, she told KFOR-TV.

“It felt good to be recognized that we can all coexist and have those equal rights,” she added.

State officials later said they planned to do thorough review of the picture, and were considering changing the rules because they may be outdated.

UNCLE MONKEY FINDS THE PERFECT DAY TO RIDE–Ahh the perfect day to ride. Every once in a while a perfect day for riding comes along. Days when the sky is a clear deep blue when there isn’t a single cloud from horizon to horizon across this great land.

Perfect days that come up when the forecast for snow and cold is looming in the hours to come but right now, the temperature is a just a few degrees above ideal. Your bike is calling, the road is calling. If you are like me you have a honey-do list a mile long but for today it gets rolled up and put away. You promise it will be a short ride, some of the things on that list need to be done before the cold but as soon as you roll out you know you won’t be back any time soon. You meet up with friends; head out on those miles you promised them to ride months ago.

There you are. Traffic blurred away into oblivion, grass along the side of the road swaying as you pass by. This a day to be riding, a perfect day to be riding. You pour on the miles without a care in the world. This is why you ride; this is the day that kept you going in the middle of winter when frost bite nipped at your fingers.

The day that haunts your dreams, fills you with the emotions only another biker can understand. You fuel up, fill up, push on.

People ask why I ride, why I waste my money on bikes and dreams. I smile telling them “just because.” Days like this are lost on them protected and shielded within their cages, lost within their bubble isolated from the world, isolated from their souls.

We feel the wind on our skin, the sun of our faces, the spirit within. It why we ride, why we spent those hours huddled under an overpass in driving rain, why we huddled close to our engines shaking off the cold to ride those last few miles. It is living those moments, sharing those moments with all those that ride that we truly appreciate the perfect days.

They make our hearts swell with pride, they remind us of friends who have gone on ahead to our final resting place. They make us humble in the grandness of the design, arrogant in the progress of man over machine. So whether you are bunkered down waiting for that break, elbows deep in that rebuild take solace in that these days are waiting for you.

HELL, WE DON’T KNOW IF THESE ARE BAD JOKES OR WHAT?
WORRYING does not take away tomorrow’s TROUBLES; it takes away today’s PEACE.“–

An airline pilot wrote that on this particular flight he had hammered his ship into the runway really hard. The airline had a policy which required the first officer to stand at the door while the passengers exited, smile, and give them a ‘Thanks for flying our airline.’

He said that, in light of his bad landing, he had a hard time looking the passengers in the eye, thinking that someone would have a smart comment. Finally, everyone had gotten off except for a little old lady walking with a cane. She said, ‘Sir, do you mind if I ask you a question?’

‘Why, no, Ma’am,’ said the pilot. ‘What is it?’

The little old lady said, ‘Did we land, or were we shot down?’

REPORT FROM THE MOTORCYCLE RIDERS FOUNDATION–Encouraging news from the land of Lincoln. Let’s hope this is a sign of a nationwide trend. Shout out to Bob Myers of ABATE of IL for nailing this interview! Attaboy Bob!

–Jeff

SPRINGFIELD — Motorcycle fatalities decreased by nearly 30 percent so far in 2014, according to Illinois Department of Transportation data.

Sixty motorcycle riders were killed between January and July of this year, compared to 84 fatalities during the same period in 2013.

Three people died in motorcycle accidents in Sangamon County from January
to July in both 2014 and 2013. Only one person was killed in Macon County during the first seven months of the year, compared to three last year.

But Morgan County has seen the most significant decrease in the area, according to the data. Five people died in motorcycle crashes in 2013, and
no one has been killed this year.

Bob Myers, legislative coordinator for a motorcyclist rights group, told
The State Journal-Register that any number of fatalities is “more than any of us want.”

He said people should also look at the number of registered motorcycles on the road, instead of only paying attention to the number of riders killed.

Data from the Illinois secretary of state’s office show slightly fewer motorcyclists on Illinois roads this year. There were 360,188 registered
bikes on the road this year, down from 360,883 last year.

“It’s an inherently dangerous recreation for some people,” Myers said. “But for some people it’s our main mode of transportation. We assume those
risks.”

Increasing speed limits on Illinois interstates to match those throughout the country makes roads safer for motorcyclists, according to Myers. A law
that increased the speed limit on the state’s rural interstates went into effect earlier this year.

“We didn’t jump out and lobby (the law) or anything, but we supported it,” Myers said. “All the states around us already have a 70 mph speed limit. We were in favor of equalizing the speed for all the vehicles.”

The bike was built to pay homage to the dealerships racing history.

This bike was built by Hal’s Harley-Davidson in New Berlin, to pay homage to the dealership’s racing history. Avid Dirt Track enthusiasts, Hal and Kirk traveled the Midwest watching races since the mid ’70s. Like many dealers they turned a hobby into their livelihood when they acquired J&S Cycles in 1978.

ACCIDENTAL REBUILD

Sometimes Mickey Mouse is Best! By Scooter Tramp Scotty

Part One
The girl lived in a trailer park on the northern outskirts of Los Angeles. She was “Trailer Treasure”, and so it was I’d come to stay for the past two weeks. Although this was not the heart of the city, neither could it be confused with countryside. Concrete ruled this place and traffic was often a nightmare. Still, we were a long way from sky scrapers and there were middle class American homes lining the side streets and cul-de-sacs.

The 1st Annual Hawaii Motorcycle Rally (HMR) 2014

Mother Nature finally agreed to let the show happen.

The 1st annual Hawaii Motorcycle Rally (HMR) 2014 is officially in the books. Mother Nature finally agreed to let the show happen this weekend since it was previously re-scheduled due to the two hurricanes anticipated a few weeks ago.

t was nice to see an event that brought the entire Hawaii motorcycle community together. The hype created by the “Biker Build-Off” shows that were once a craze has began to die down so it was nice to see someone in Hawaii trying to keep the spirit of bike building alive with this show. The show kept the crowd engaged with a bike contest and a variety of entertainment ranging from arm wrestling to bikini contests. The show ran for two days at the Aloha Stadium. The main attraction, of course, was the bike show. There were tons of new faces eager and ready to show what they have been working on.

RC COMPONENTS 4 inch Slip On Mufflers

Rogue gets a new set of RC Component’s mufflers.

While in Sturgis for the rally I had stopped to see my friend Dan Fitzmaurice from Zippers Performance so that he could take the current readings from my ThunderMax ECM. This is something that we do on a regular basis so that they can use the information to help program the systems they offer to their customers.

For some time I had been running the same exhaust system. I believe it was the 4th one we had used and Dan asked if I would be interested in trying a new set of mufflers. He took me next door to meet Chris Cross the Director of Sales & Marketing for RC COMPONENTS. They had a very nice assortment on hand and were doing installs and offered to put a set on my motorcycle for me to try.

BIKERNET THOUGHTS OF THE DAY FROM THE WEEK MAGAZINE—“Knowing what’s right doesn’t mean much unless you do what’s right,” –Theodore Roosevelt, quoted in the Montreal Gazette

FLORIDA BRIEFS FROM ROGUENOKOMI

Cops photograph sleeping burglar

An alleged Florida burglar who apparently fell asleep on the job is getting a lot of attention after deputies say they snapped a picture of him asleep in the victim’s home.

According to the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office Facebook page, a cleaning lady discovered 29-year-old Dion Davis inside the home on Monday.

Deputies took several photographs of the sleeping Davis, but he didn’t wake up. Davis was charged with burglary.

Old Farm Equipment And Scrap Metal Turned Into Stunning Sculptures--South Dakotan sculptor John Lopez creates life-sized scrap metal sculptures with a uniquely Western American twist. In his hands, old discarded farm equipment is recycled into sculptures of iconic creatures from the American West like a bison, a horse plowing a field, or a Texas Longhorn.

Lopez already had a career as a bronze sculptor, but after creating a family grave for his deceased aunt using scrap metal, he began creating recycled metal sculptures out of found or donated pieces of metal as well.

“My favorite part about these pieces is the texture,” explains Lopez. “I just start grabbin’ stuff from the pile and welding it, in and if you weld enough of the same thing on over and over it creates this really cool texture that I’ve never seen in these kinds of pieces before. And I think that’s what draws people in.”

CANNONBALL REPORT–We had reports of Ormond Beach motorcycle police pulling over Cannonballers and ticketing them. Really? And it was true.

We saw 2 Ormond Beach bike cops pull over our riders. I left with my three Adventure Power’s Team American Iron partners (Paul Ousey, Cris Sommer Simmons and Pat Simmons, and our mutual pal Jim Petty. We rode four Harleys and one Indian (Petty).

The first day started slow with all the bikes (about 98) all lined up on the sand of Daytona Beach for a fabled “yardlong” photo by Michael Lichter. We arrived at 8 am and were barely finished by 9:30 a half hour before the first riders leave.

We also heard about a 1928 JD catching fire and burning to the ground.

UNCLE MONKEY ON THE HUNT FOR A BIKERNET TRAILER–If you are looking for a trailer I would suggest getting a cargo toy hauler. It is a basic enclosed motorcycle trailer but with some sliding windows, some upper cabinets, maybe a fold down bed or some have a tent trailer pop out on the side.

They are great for loading down with gear, etc and still give you someplace to hang your hat in the heat or the end of the day. The RV based toy haulers are cool but they are more for camping, bikes are a second thought along with storage for them. Just a thought.

AMAZING—Life can be amazing with a little work and a lot of freedom.

Next week rumor has it, we might have a report on the new hot rod JIMS engine.

Also from the rumor mill, I’ve been bugging our esteemed Bagger editor about his report on the Paughco frame to replace his tweeked dresser frame. We are going to build him a very cool King styled touring bike. He would even like to run a springer. I want to see this bastard back on the road. No one works as hard as Richard, and he’s been through a very tough year, then wrecked his bike.

I need just a couple of shots and I will wrap up an interview with Dave Rash, the Pope of Pipe, or the Emperor of Exhaust. He just released a new subtitle for his company, “The best Unknown Exhaust System on the Planet.”

It took some soul searching to make the move, but I sent in a down payment on a 2014 Indian, to American Biker in Charleston, SC. Rich Worley is going to modify it slightly for me, then ride it across the country to visit his daughter in Los Angeles, where she is going to school. Of course, just as I step up to buy an Indian, they stop advertising on Bikernet. What the hell?

I need to launch a Lead Sled feature. Pat won a Builder’s award at the Smoke Out, then I need to write a Tom Seymour feature for Hot Bike, and we are about to feature Andrew’s Sportster, which is on the cover of American Iron right now. The action never stops around here.

Have a helluva Weekend!

Ride Free Forever,

–Bandit
