SMOKEOUT AND BORN FREE PLANNING THURSDAY NEWS FOR June 12, 2014

Hey,

This is a day of mysteries and mayhem. My name is on a poster for the 4th of July Hollister Run with Branscombe Richmond. Will I be there? It’s a mystery. Some of the permits didn’t come in when they expected. There maybe some problems with the cops. For several years the California Highway Patrol extorted over $300,000 from the Hollister community under the guise of community protection and put the rally out of business. Now it’s back, but is it safe?

The SmokeOut Rally in RockingWorld North Carolina and the Born not-so-Free Rally in southern California were mysteriously planted on the same weekend this year. So where is a poor boy going to go. Since one is on the west coast and one on the east it shouldn’t be an issue, but wait. I’m going to ride a new Indian for the first time to the SmokeOut in Rockingville and party.

Hang on for reports from both ends of the country.

Let’s hit the news:

The Thursday News is sponsored in part by Cycle Source Magazine and Las Vegas Bikefest.

SEASON TWO COMING FROM WHEELS THROUGH TIME TEAM–Walksler has spent his life searching for long since forgotten gems, and uncovering history in the most unusual and extraordinary places. As his passion grew, so did his collection, eventually evolving into the motorcycle paradise that is the Wheels Through Time Museum.

Located in Maggie Valley, N.C., Wheels Through Time features more than 300 of America’s rarest classic motorcycles, and the collection continues growing thanks to Dale’s undying passion for historic machines.

Find out WHAT’S IN THE BARN? every Tuesday night at 10 PM ET/PT beginning June 10 only on Velocity.

The Bikernet editorial team is working on an interview with Dale to be published on Bikernet in the near future. Hang on.

Full Season Two Episode Descriptions Below
All Times ET/PT

“A Diamond in Dodge City”
World Premieres Tuesday, June 10 at 10 PM

A family farm in the mid-west contains houses, barns, outbuildings, trailers, grain silos and buses full of old stuff, as well as what might be the biggest stash of undiscovered old motorcycles in the country. The collection was put together by the family’s patriarch – a true hoarder of things in the 1930s. In this episode, a high-end client agrees to have Dale broker a price for an extremely rare Excelsior motorcycle stored in the family’s garage. Dale has the buyer but will he outbid his own client for the exclusive, one-of-a-kind bike?

“Biker Lore”
World Premieres Tuesday, June 10 at 10:30 PM

Built in the mid-1960s by eccentric engineer “Wild Bill” Gelbke, the Road Dog was, and still is, the largest motorcycle ever built. In a feat of incredible motorcycle engineering the bike utilized aircraft tubing, Corvette disc brakes and a Chevy truck differential to keep it stable. The one-off creation disappeared when Gelbke did in 1978. Outflanked once when the bike was spotted and sold to a private collector in 1995, Dale vows to locate the machine and make Wheels Through Time its final resting place.

“Home Depot’s Wounded Warrior”
World Premieres Tuesday, June 17 at 10 PM

Home Depot’s Senior Vice President Gordon Erickson is a big fan of Dale’s Wheels Through Time Museum, and a huge supporter of the Wounded Warrior Project. For years the hardware giant has donated goods and services to help returning servicemen and women with their home improvement projects. Now Home Depot would like to go one step further and build a WWII military bike to raise awareness and funds for the Wounded Warrior Project. Erickson approaches Dale, sending him on an exhaustive, time sensitive, cross country search for a rare WWII era military motorcycle. A lead finally lands him in Harrison, Arkansas but there’s conflict over which branch of the armed forces the bike belonged to.

“Vegas Payday”
World Premieres Tuesday, June 24 at 10 PM

Every year hundreds of top bidders wonder what Dale will bring to the Mid-America Auction in Las Vegas. In 2013 it came down to the wire, but a three-of-a-kind find that included a Redding Standard, a 100-year-old Harley, and a six-figure Pierce – picked from the Heartland – netted Dale’s clients more than a quarter million dollars. This year, Dale has put the Vegas challenge to his son Matt while he finishes work on a rare 1912 Harley. Matt follows up leads on three valuable bikes in a Detroit barn, searches for a home-made Harley-Davidson in Virginia, and looks pull one of his prized possessions from the Wheels Through Time to net the Jackpot he and his dad are looking for.

“Time (is not) on Their Side”
World Premieres Tuesday, July 1 at 10 PM

For Dale and Matt sometimes the dotted line to treasure splits and heads in opposite directions. In this episode, time is thrust to the forefront of this multi-state, long distance, north, south search. Timeless and priceless 110 year old bikes, antique cars, airplanes, and the Infamous Egberts 1930 neon Harley-Davidson sign that coined the phrase “Ride a Winner” are high on this father and son’s list of “must haves”. The clock ticks, both literally and figuratively, on one rare time piece and two old-timer’s cars, bikes, and automobiles.

“The Second Time’s a Charm”
World Premieres Tuesday, July 8 at 10 PM

The RM Auction Company has worked with Dale before as a buyer, seller, historian and caretaker at the prestigious Lee Roy Hartung auction. The auction is a well calculated, time consuming, multi-media, and multi-motorcycle prized art deal. As information leaks that Dale has found machines, artwork and signage–all of exceptional value–prices could reach an all-time high! Dale tries to leverage the sale of various art and automobilia, including a 1926 full sized factory billboard and a rare electric side car, for an outside shot to outbid the high rollers in attendance for a rare 1911 Indian Board Track Racer.

“Orphan Bikes”
World Premieres Tuesday, July 15 at 10 PM

Promoters of the prestigious Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance ask Dale to develop a show and field bikes for extremely rare, non-Harley or Indian machines or what they’re calling “Orphan Bikes”. To build the show Dale utilizes an extremely rare Yale California, which was the first motorized vehicle to cross the U.S. back in 1903. Other “Orphan Bikes” include a rare Elk and Flesher Flyer, which was inspired by Wyman’s Yale, a Dixie Flyer still winning races, and a crated up 1911 Thor Board Tracker in Lima, Ohio.

“Don’t Tell Dale”
World Premieres Tuesday, July 22 at 10 PM

Dale’s son Matt is out for revenge. Last year he beat Matt badly at the Annual Vintage bike race in Barber, Alabama. This year, with just days until the race, Dale is secretly struggling to get the bike he beat Matt with last year up and running. But Matt is also struggling to find a 100-year old motorcycle that runs, but his prayers are answered thanks to an old priest. The priest will let Matt use the bike in a race but there are conditions – the toughest being not telling Dale he has it. Can Matt afford to buy the bike and get it running in time for the race without Dale seeing it? Will Dale even get his broken bike started? And if they ever get to race, will Matt exact his revenge?

WHAT’S IN THE BARN? is produced for Velocity by Chet Burks Productions. Chet Burks is executive producer and Ed Coughlin is senior producer for Chet Burks Productions. David Lee is executive producer for Velocity. Robert Scanlon is general manager of Velocity.

BIKER BOOK OF THE WEEK FROM BIKER MEDIA USABikers Are Animals: A Children’s Book On Motorcycling is a great new biker book series for kids. The four books are written and illustrated by Paul Jamiol, a very talented guy who has been around this lifestyle for a long, long time.

Paul takes the old “bikers are animals” saying and makes it a positive as a variety of cool actual animals (like Bandit the dog, Thor the bear, and Zig and Zag the apes) are seen cruising on their bikes, showing kids every part of the biker culture: from the brotherhood to the runs to wrenching on bikes to safety procedures and everything in between.

These books are not your usual Barney the Purple Dinosaur kind of lame stuff for kids; they’re cool, fun and perfect for kids from a home where a big bike is as much a part of the décor as is the TV and the microwave.

All the books are in large format (8.5″X11″) and filled with 37 pages of full color illustrations, fun text and even a coloring book section. The Bikers Are Animals series and so many other great books and DVD documentaries produced from the “inside” of the biker way of life, is available at www.BikerMediaUSA.com.

BIKERNET WEEKLY GUN NUT REPORT–Schumer Flubs Basic American History

Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.), sponsor of the Brady Bill and the “assault weapon” and “large” magazine ban when he was in the House of Representatives, probably shouldn’t be the go-to guy for historical arguments against the individual right to keep and bear arms.

The Washington Times reports that Schumer said on Tuesday Thomas Jefferson was the architect of the Bill of Rights. As the Times notes, Jefferson was overseas serving as minister to France during the Constitutional convention and the congressional debate over the Bill of Rights.

Schumer can perhaps console himself that both Jefferson and a pivotal author and champion of the Bill of Rights, James Madison, had a lot in common.

(Sen. Schumer, take notes.) Jefferson and Madison were both from Virginia. Both later became president of the United States. And both supported the right to arms.

But there are some important differences, too. For example, Jefferson wrote the Declaration of Independence. Madison, on the other hand, argued for ratification of the Constitution in The Federalist, commonly referred to as The Federalist Papers.

In The Federalist, Number 46, for example, Madison said that under the Constitution, the people would retain the right to keep and bear arms for defense against tyranny.

For that matter, Alexander Hamilton, from Schumer’s home state, also endorsed an armed citizenry for the same reason in The Federalist, Number 29.

But, we digress.

Since his election to the Senate, Schumer has spent a considerable amount of time trying to enact gun control, in contravention of the work of men like Jefferson, Madison, and Hamilton. In particular, Schumer proposed to expand the Undetectable Firearms Act, expand the federal “armor piercing ammunition” law, impose “assault weapon” and “large” magazine bans, and expand background checks.

Instead, he might want to spend a little more time with a history book.

BIKERNET INTERNATIONAL EDITOR NEVER STOPS–Quite a few asked about these photos –

Saturday and Sunday was the 20th iteration of a fundraiser in Lancaster.
It is called – Thunder On The Lot – held at the fairgrounds. Hot for sure.

I had committed to covering it for Quick Throttle magazine or I would have stayed in South East Asia a few more days, as I had some money left and you know I would be pissed if the plane crashed before I could spend it. The good news is the plane didn’t crash and I still have the money.

It is the first time this has been seen in it’s entirety by the general public.
He, the owner of the collection, did show a bit of it privately one other time.

I think his name is Jim, if not it will be for this writing, is a studio employee.
His craft is sculpturing which is significant to the story.

The collection began back about 40 years ago when Jim first saw the movie.

Jim claims that the frame and many of the bike parts are truly original.
He claims to have paid $10,000 for that frame as it has authentication.
He claims both bikes to be the most correct re-creations of any on the planet.

His craft is important because HE sculptured the bodies and faces, of silicone.
His association with hair and makeup artists helped finish the heads.
They are the most authentic looking figures I have seen of any celebrity.
I don’t think the wax museum has any that are as realistic.

Jim is retiring at the end of the month and moving to Texas.
His display is for sale with a reserve bid of $500,000.00

Aren’t you glad you asked ???

THE BIKERNET MUFFLER MANTRA—We are in the process of putting together an extensive interview with the Pope of Pipe, Dave Rash, the boss of D&D Exhaust. In the process we thought it would be important to touch on emission regulations and suspected noise requirements being developed.

I’ve reached out to members of the industry who are working with the MIC or the MRF. Here are a couple of our findings:

One of the issues is with the EPA working quietly with the OEMs on the next level of motorcycle emissions regulations. I don’t know the details, this is all very behind the scenes now.

I suspect that they want to be able to blunt any negative comments on the rules when they are published for public comment by saying that these are the rules the manufacturers agreed to. I do not know if they are looking to reduce sound levels along with pollutants or not. Hopefully they will not include anti-tampering measures like shear bolts in the heads.

As you know, there are always people out there who want motorcycles to be quiet,

I have not heard anything about what CARB is doing these days, have you? They got pretty nasty a couple of years ago with ECMs and pipes.

–MRF

I’m not sure if there is an official position paper, MIC has continually responded to both ARB and EPA on regulations that are over reaching. Example was the Fran Pavely proposed regulation a number of years ago suggesting annual emissions testing and sounds requirements for motorcycles. That one was finally watered down to a sounds requirement which already exists.

MIC also developed a roadside sound testing procedure that has been presented to both ARB and EPA. It was based around the current sound requirement of 80 DB drive by.

As for catalysts, that’s a no brainer, you can’t remove them, just like cars. As you know there were many fines handed out over the last few years by ARB to exhaust manufactures and distributors.

Manufactures are working on developing exhaust with catalysts and some already have EO’s. I am working with one company now and it’s really interesting how the sound and performance with the catalyst is better than the stock and their aftermarket pipe. Other states are going to enforce this issue eventually.

–MIC

We have also contacted the California Motorcycle Dealers Association for their input. If you have any comments or question, don’t hesitate to drop me a note. I find it interesting, there is never any mention of freedom, Loud Pipes Save Lives, or emissions from a economic perspective. It’s all about more regulations. How about more industry, more jobs, and more fun?–Bandit

BIKERNET ON NOAH TODAY
In the year 2014, the Lord came unto Noah, who was now living in Somerset and said:
“Once again, the earth has become evil and I see the end of all flesh before me. Build another Ark and save 2 of every living thing along with a few good humans.” He gave Noah the blueprints, saying: “You have 6 months to build the Ark before I will start the unending rain for 40 days and 40 nights.”

Six months later, the Lord looked down and saw Noah weeping in his yard – but no Ark. “Noah!” He roared, “I’m about to start the rain! Where is the Ark?”

“Forgive me, Lord,” begged Noah, “but things have changed.”

“I needed a Building Permit.”

“I’ve been arguing with the Boat Inspector
about the need for a sprinkler system.”

“My neighbours claim that I’ve violated the
Neighborhood By-Laws by building the Ark in my back garden and exceeding the height limitations. We had to go to the Local Planning Committee for a decision.”

“Then the Local Council and the Electric Company demanded a boat load of money for the future costs of moving power lines and other overhead obstructions, to clear the passage for the Ark’s move to the sea. I told them that the sea would be coming to us, but they would hear nothing of it.”

“Getting the wood was another problem. There’s a ban on cutting local trees in order to save the Greater Spotted Barn Owl. I tried to convince the environmentalists that I needed the wood to save the owls – but no go!”

“When I started gathering the animals the RSPCA took me to court. They insisted that I was confining wild animals against their will. They argued the accommodations were too restrictive, and it was cruel and inhumane to put so many animals in a confined space.”

“Then the Environmental Protection Agency ruled that I couldn’t build the Ark until they’d conducted an environmental impact study on your proposed flood.”

“I’m still trying to resolve a complaint with the Human Rights Commission on how many minorities I’m supposed to hire for my building crew.”

“Immigration are checking the Visa status of most of the people who want to work.”

“The Trades Unions say I can’t use my sons. They insist I have to hire only Union workers with ark-building experience.”

“To make matters worse, the Internal Revenue Service seized all my assets, claiming I’m trying to leave the country illegally with endangered species.”

“So, forgive me, Lord, but it would take at least 10 years for me to finish this Ark.”

“Suddenly the skies cleared, the sun began to shine, and a rainbow stretched across the sky.”

Noah looked up in wonder and asked,
“You mean you’re not going to destroy the world?”

“No,” said the Lord.
” The Government beat me to it.”
May I please have an AMEN.

Partying, Fighting and Biking

Motorcycle Enthusiast Autobiographies, by Kevin Thomas – Official Book Reviewer for Bikernet.

The common thread of the following books is a passion for motorcycles and adventure. Adventure can be found in riding great distances and crossing state and national borders and finding yourself. Adventure can be more localized and involve urban turf wars against other clubs and law enforcement agencies and finding yourself in jail or prison. What is it about the two wheeler that attracts the outsider, the weird, the loner and the misfit?

Family Tradition and Youngblood Kustomz

As a builder, Steve admits he prefers motorcycles to hot rods in his shop. Text and Photos by Tyler Ludlow

I hear bikers say they grew up riding, or riding has been in their family for generations. It is something to be proud of, and arguably more sincere than a recipe book, or a fishing spot. Those motorcycles carry memories and family legacy, not just the rider. With a name like Youngblood Kustomz, you can almost expect a deep lineage in the motorcycle shop, but it’s hard to top Steven Youngblood’s roots in the motorcycle community.

BIKERNET GUN NUT ADVOCATES–Ask Your U.S. Representative to Cosponsor and Support H.R. 2959 – “The Right-to-Carry Reciprocity Act of 2013”

The “Right-to-Carry Reciprocity Act of 2013” (H.R. 2959)–introduced in the U.S. House by Reps. Richard Nugent (R-Fla.) and Jim Matheson (D-Utah)–would allow any person who is not prohibited from possessing or receiving a firearm under federal law and who has a valid concealed firearm permit, to carry a concealed handgun in any state that issues its own residents permits to carry concealed firearms. Persons carrying a handgun in another state pursuant to H.R. 2959 would be subject to the laws of that state with respect to where concealed firearms may be carried. Similar legislation to H.R. 2959 passed the House in 2011 by an overwhelming bipartisan vote of 272-154.

H.R. 2959 would not create a federal licensing system, nor authorize the federal government to interfere with the powers of the states to set standards for the issuance of carry permits, nor establish federal standards for carry permits, nor override state laws that recognized the right to carry firearms without a permit. Rather, it would simply require the states to recognize each others’ carry permits, much like drivers’ licenses.

Please contact your U.S. Representative and ask him or her to cosponsor and support H.R. 2959 – “The Right-to-Carry Reciprocity Act of 2013”.

You can contact your U.S. Representative about this important legislation by phone at (202) 225-3121.

RIDE TO WORK DAY RELEASE
The 23rd annual Ride To Work demonstration can more than triple the number of riders on some roads. Most motorcycle and scooter clubs and organizations encourage riders to commute by scooter or cycle on this day. Riders seek employer recognition and support for this form of transportation and increased public and government awareness of the societally positive benefits of utility riding.

Adding motorcycles and scooters helps traffic flow better, according to Ride to Work, a non-profit advocacy organization. Studies have also shown that across the same distances, riders reach their destinations up to 20% faster than those using automobiles. Most motorcycles and scooters also consume less resources per mile than automobiles.

Riding to work on this day is fun and highlights value of motorcycling. Riding is a form of
personal mobility that saves energy, helps the environment and provides a broad range of public benefits,” stated Andy Goldfine, event organizer.

Motorcycle racers to chase records at Bonneville Salt Flats–AMA Land Speed Grand Championships set for Aug. 23-28

PICKERINGTON, Ohio — The world’s fastest motorcyclists will compete for
their place in history this Aug. 23-28 as they race for national and world records at the Bonneville Motorcycle Speed Trials.

Over a typical running of the six-day event, the American Motorcyclist Association clocks numerous provisional record-setting runs in classes featuring everything from 50cc mini-bikes to 3,000cc purpose-built top-speed machines.

“The Bonneville Motorcycle Speed Trials, also known as the AMA Land Speed Grand
Championships
, is one of the most unique competition events that we sanction,” said
AMA Track Racing Manager Ken Saillant. “Land-speed racing, and this event in particular,
attracts an incredible diversity of motorcycles and racers. Every year the competition gets even more fierce, and we expect 2014 to be one of the most challenging ever.”

Delvene Manning, owner of Deliciate Promotions LLC and the Bonneville Motorcycle
Speed Trials
and former daughter-in-law of long-time event promoter and AMA Motorcycle
Hall of Famer Denis Manning, said that she’s excited to take the reins of the event

during an era of growing popularity of the sport.

“Denis shepherded land-speed racing into a new era, drawing competitors from all
corners of the country and all backgrounds to chase their place in the record books,”
Delvene Manning said. “We have everyone from weekend warriors to fully backed factory
teams at this event, and we’re looking forward to carrying on the grand tradition
of AMA championship land-speed racing on the Bonneville Salt Flats.”

A number of high-profile attempts are expected this year. One is the Castrol Rocket,
a 1,000-horsepower motorcycle with an eye on the outright land-speed record. Backed
by Castrol and Triumph, the Hot Rod Conspiracy/Carpenter Racing Castrol
Rocket will be ridden by former Daytona 200 winner Jason DiSalvo. DiSalvo will be chasing the current record of 376.363 mph set by rider Rocky Robinson and builder Mike Akatiff in 2010.

“The outright land-speed record is one of motorcycle competition’s great triumphs,”
Saillant said. “It is an enormous undertaking to compete for titles that push the frontiers of human achievement, and the investment, practice and teamwork that goes into just a few seconds of time at speed on the track is both mind-boggling and awe-inspiring.”

Entry information, a detailed schedule, rules, classes and existing records are

BIKERNET ROGUE REPORT–Up early running well over the speed limit and getting to bed late.

Good news is radar detection devices working well.
Klock Werks speaker and amp system work over 100 MPH LOL.

When ya get time please see if you can get the tech article up.

The piece that Chris and Cat did on the first part of the ride is generating Much Good Comments – They are doing such a good job.

So far the event that Berry Wardlaw and the people from Dothan put on was the best yet. They even collected more than the cigar people did. But Of Course That Was Expected – Bikers Did It.

Gotta go pack bike and get down the highway,
I will keep you up to date as best I can.

AND NOW FOR THE BIKERNET BAD JOKE LIBRARY
Do you remember the famous Olympic skier Picabo Street (pronounced Pee-Ka-Boo)? Well, Picabo is not just an athlete. She is now a nurse currently working at an Intensive Care Unit of a large metropolitan hospital. She is not permitted to answer the hospital telephones any longer. It caused too much confusion when she would answer the phone and say, “Picabo, I.C.U.”

POKER RUN LAW PASSED IN ILLINOIS— Abate of IL – SB 3312 is now law

The Governor signed into law today, June 10th, SB3312, our Poker Run Bill, PA 98-0644.

You may now go to your county clerks office and apply for a permit to hold your poker runs and that permit capped at a max $25 will cover all stops no matter what county your stops are in.

Groups that are Not-For-Profit may do non-charity events to keep themselves financially sound.  There are no minimum or maximum amount of stops per event.

There must be a go-to person in charge OTHER THAN YOUR TREASURER.
Felons cannot be in charge of the money matters and records must be kept and available for 3 years.  Take a copy of the law to your county clerks office for discussion.

The PA 98-0644 has not been listed on the General Assembly web site so the Senate Amendment 3 above will work as that is the bill that passed.

I highly suggest that when you get your permit that you photo copy it and give a copy to all your stops to prevent other state agencies from giving those stops a hard time/hassle.

I want to thank all those members that showed up and also all the Shriner s that came and that have been so supportive.

–Bob

Your 5-Ball Racing Team is one week closer to scrutinizing and the starting line on the salt in August. We have made major progress this past week in the quest for speed. Above image is one of the first attempts at an intercooler.

With Dr. Willie slaving away, completing the ever- shortening to do list. The 5-Ball Raycer is starting to look like all of the pieces have a happy, logical place.

Willie spent the past few days kickin ass, changing the oil line fittings (the hardware is now safety wired) on the front of the engine to AN fittings, the Series 66 AerochargerTurbo has been on and off a couple of times while completing the last two oil fittings. Willie’s safety wiring is aircraft approved, nuts on the money.

Bright and early Tuesday morning Marc Susman and his Crew dedicated a 5-axis machine, a programmer and operator to attack the final designing and machining of our latest air plenum.

Note the interchangeable velocity stack, Marc machined two for upcoming tuning opportunities in New York. Master Tuner, Dan Thayer is the proprietor behind the helm of Thayer Sales & Service: www.vtwinfuelinjection.com. Dan will handle the tuning end of the www.kingofcubes.com, Randy Torgeson www.R&RCycle.com, 124 inch, S&S Cycle Twin Cam.

Lurking behind the Susman air plenum we’re running a 62mm www.horsepowerinc.org throttle body. Our Daytona Twin Tech closed loop computer will control all of the technical duties including fuel management, timing, etc. We ran this engine combination in a 2004 record setting Dyna for over 135,000 miles.

While the Thursday News is going to print the Classic and Custom Rides air plenum will be in the final stages. A 2 ¼-inch inlet will be added to the air plenum while the bonnet is welded in place allowing the Twins at www.twinsturbo.com in Long Beach a chance to connect the intercooler piping.

A pick-up date was confirmed Wednesday morning with www.keyboardmotorcycleshipping.com. Bikernet has shipped with Keyboard experiencing timely pick- ups and delivery.

Stay tuned for an overdue monthly update.

MOTORCYCLE RIDERS FOUNDATION WASHINGTON DC NEWS: HR 4745 Walberg Amendment Passes

On June 9th the United States House of Representatives agreed on the Walberg Amendment to the 2015 Transportation, Housing and Urban Development Appropriations bill by voice vote on the House floor, reports the Motorcycle Riders Foundation.

The Amendment offered by Congressman Tim Walberg (R-MI) along with Mr. Sensenbrenner (R-WI) and Mr. Ribble (R-WI), eliminates a provision in the 2015 Transportation, Housing and Urban Development Appropriations act that would have allowed the Secretary of Transportation to discuss motorcycle safety initiatives with state legislators.

In 1998 Congress passed a law that made it illegal for the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to lobby state legislatures. Prior to 1998, according to the Government Accountability Office, NHTSA had spent tens of thousands of dollars traveling to states whenever a state debated changing their own state helmet law. Seeing this as a waste of taxpayer money, the congress prohibited anyone from NHTSA to lobby states uninvited.

Mr. Walberg had this to say “This money should go to fund eliminating distracted driving, motorcycle rider education, and motorist-motorcycle awareness campaigns.”

“Put simply this is a states rights issue”, said Jeff Hennie Vice President of Government Relations and Public Affairs for the Motorcycle Rider Foundation. He added “With such limited, precious funds they need to be used in areas of safety that are proven, not for bureaucratic waste.”

The amendment was opposed on the floor by Ed Pastor (D-AZ).

The Motorcycle Riders Foundation (MRF) thanks everyone who made calls on this important issue, your participation was key in getting this amendment to pass.

The full bill was passed by the U.S. House of Representatives the evening of June 10th with the Walberg amendment enacted.

MORE FROM THE BIKERNET GUN NUT COMMITTEE, Accused Arms-Smuggler Gets Nearly 300,000 Votes in California Election–

On Tuesday, over 287,000 Californians cast their votes for San Francisco-area State Sen. Leland Yee in the Democratic Party’s Secretary of State primary election. You might recall Sen. Yee is a long-time anti-gunner and, in 2006, received an “A+” rating from the Brady Campaign and was named to the group’s so-called “Gun Violence Prevention Honor Roll.”

The strange thing here is not just that Yee is currently under federal indictment on arms smuggling charges (no doubt his supporters would say he is still entitled to the presumption of innocence). The votes for Yee are even more curious considering he dropped out of the race in March.

Then again, maybe we shouldn’t be surprised. Gun control supporters who vote for anti-gun politicians like Yee are notorious for forming their opinions on the basis of little or no factual information. Others may be so committed to their anti-gun agenda that even the facts that are brought to their attention no longer matter.

Whatever else can be said for the motives of these voters, their uninformed behavior should serve as a warning. Those who still cast their ballots for pro-freedom candidates had better show up in force this November or face the prospect of even more fact-free governance.

THERE YOU HAVE IT—We are scrambling but making progress across the board. Ray’s bike will be shipped next week.

Mistress Chris is helping me launch the Biker’s Choice ramp evaluation. We have a new Girl of Bikernet coming with a series of blonde jokes, unless she will talk about how much she likes to be whipped (photos by Jack MacIntyre).

Yaniv at Power Plant has been sick, but I may ride to Melrose and interview him about this hot Café bobber next week. The boss of MetalSport Wheels is reviewing the article on the Vinnie, so we may be making some progress on Matt’s Vincent feature.

And Jack MacIntyre turned me onto this Panhead feature. It’s interesting how a builder can take an old Panhead and make a helluva comfortable classic and safe rider out of her. And I’m making progress on my Ride Wright winged wheel project for the front of our old building.

There’s more but it never stops flying at us. Let us know if you need anything covered. We have anxious motorcycle writers and photographers all over the country, and they are all dying to send me a bill. I don’t mind. I like keeping talented guys alive and thriving.

Ride Free Forever,

–Bandit
