THE BLACK Friday EXTENSION Thursday NEWS for December 5, 2013

Hey,

I listen to Sirius radio and move from channel to channel depending on the mood. I rolled over to 40s on 4 and it’s all old Christmas music, like Silver Bells by Dean Martin.

According to the Wall Street Journal 27 percent more folks went shopping on Black Friday but sales were down over last year by 3 percent. Good god. Black Friday will continue until Christmas to keep the country financially alive.

Or is it the Spirit of the Holidays? Who the fuck knows. Let’s hit the news.

The Thursday News is sponsored in part by Cycle Source, IronWorks, and Easyriders Magazines.

THE 100TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE “Drive-In” Gas Station–In case you didn’t know it December 1st marks the 100th anniversary of the opening of the first dedicated drive-in gas station in the United States by the Gulf Oil Company. This first “drive-in” gas station was located on the corner of Baum Boulevard and St. Clair Street in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in an area of the city known as “automobile row” because of the number of automobile dealerships located nearby.

Previous to that date if you needed gas for your Harley, Indian, or Excelsior you had to find a local business like a hardware store or even a pharmacy that had a gas pump in front of it. These pumps were usually curbside so they presented a traffic hazard for moving vehicles and those pumping the gas where-as the Gulf Oil station gave drivers the convenience of having the pumps away from the street and, something seldom seen now-a-days, an attendant to fuel the vehicles.

The pagoda-style building offered a canopy to shelter employees, a storage room, and one employee only restroom. Gulf soon saw the advantages of having “Free Restrooms” for its customers. On the first day of operation the station sold 30 gallons of gasoline at 27 cents per gallon, then on its first Saturday the new service station pumped 350 gallons of gasoline. BTW it wasn’t until 1919 that gasoline surpassed kerosene as the highest selling petroleum product. How things have changed.

FAMOUS BIKE BUILDER FROM BACK IN THE DAY WITH EASYRIDERS RETIRED–Starting my fifth year of retirement and enjoying every moment. I’m on my third project since I saw you, ’39 Chevy coupe, then a ’52 Chevy pick-p, now a ’49 Chevy Chop Top Coupe. The shovel was my last bike because with my Model A in the garage and another car/truck project, I have no room. I’ve still got my bike lift stashed so there may be one more two wheeler project in my future.

Still trying to get down there for a visit. Howard, aka TREE is sporting a 41″ over Sugar Bear springer and has been riding the snot out of his scoot for five years and is still winning shows.

Having my bike featured on Bikernet was/is a major highlight in my scooter career, Thanks to you, Brother. Hope this note finds you healthy, happy, and
blessed.

HAMSTER MIKE COLE LETTER: To all my FB friends– I have some bad news about me. I have been diagnosed with colo-rectal cancer, that has spread to my liver. I have been going through extensive testing and procedures at the Ohio State University James Center Hospital and I will be starting chemotherapy on Monday.

In my early earning years, I worked for the Department of Energy in a uranium enrichment facility, and I and the doctors feel my exposure has triggered this. I will try to answer all phone calls, and e-mails. The doctors opinion is that is treatable, but I am in for a street-fight, which I will face.

I am asking for your prayers during this time, for comfort, and strength for my family. They are standing strong with me, and are willing to face this head-on. Thanks in advance.

BRAND New Bikernet Reader Comment!–
BadAss Shovelhead Engine Build

http://www.bikernet.com/pages/story_detail.aspx?id=1705

Mike I love the machine work coming from your shop. I’m interested in a pair of the heads. My engine is 96″. I shortened the 5.530 barrels to 5.420 and added S&S’s new forged pistons to increase the compression to 9.7:1 to add some pep to a lazy engine.

The heads have had all the popular up grades over the years like dual plugs and porting. I run a Leinweber L5 cam with Velva touch lifters and single fire Crane 4 ignition.

The carb is an S&S Super E. As you can see I’ve dropped some money into this bike over the years and would still like to run some of the same equipment to keep down cost. I would welcome your suggestions

BIKERNET BAD JOKE LIBRARY NOW OPEN–An Italian workman wants a job, but the foreman won’t hire him until he passes a little math test..

‘Here’s your first question,’ the foreman said. ‘Without using numbers, represent the number 9.’

‘Withouta numbers?’ the Italian says, ‘Datsa easy,’ and he proceeds to draw three trees.

‘What’s this?’ the boss asks.

‘Ave you gota no brain? Tree and tree and tree makes a nine,’ says the Italian.

‘Fair enough,’ says the boss. ‘Here’s your second question. Use the same rules, but this time the number is 99.’

The Italian stares into space for a while, then picks up the picture that he has just drawn
and makes a smudge on each tree. ‘Ere you go.’

The boss scratches his head and says, ‘How on earth do you get that to represent 99?’

Eacha of da trees is a dirty now. So, it’s dirty tree, and dirty tree, and dirty tree. Datsa a 99.’

The boss is getting worried that he’s going to actually have to hire this Italian, so he says,
‘All right, last question. Same rules again, but represent the number 100.’

The Italian stares into space some more, then he picks up the picture again and makes
a little mark at the base of each tree and says, ‘Ere you go. One hundred.’

The boss looks at the attempt. ‘You must be nuts if you think that represents a hundred!’

The Italian leans forward and points to the marks at the base of each tree and says,
‘A little doga come along and crapa by eacha tree. So now you gota dirty tree and a turd,
dirty tree and a turd, and dirty tree and a turd, data makea one hundred. So, whenna I start?’

THE HOLIDAY OFFER FROM RETROVISION–
Below is my new and improved version of one of my most popular prints, “Cruisin’ Bob’s – Summer of ’62”.

Aside from a beautiful new sunset sky (with crescent a moon), now featured front and center is one of the most famous cars in hot rodding history, Norm Grabowski’s famous “Kookie T” rod. This cool car was driven by Ed “Kookie ” Byrnes in the classic ’60s TV series 77 Sunset Strip, and was also the very first T-bucket rod ever built!

That’s Norm at the wheel, and behind him you’ll see other great rods, customs, woodies, gassers, and a Harley chopper. Also making the scene are an assortment of cool dudes, hot babes, and even a Burbank P.D.cop!

The size is 18 x 24″ and they are printed on the highest quality 100lb. archival paper. My prints are still only $30 (or $35 hand signed and dated in gold ink) + shipping.

Visit: www.retrovisions.com to buy it and also see more of my art, or call me: (818) 970-9128 after 9am Pacific Time, please.

As always, I can even put your bike and/or car (and you or whoever) into any of my pictures! Now there’s a cool personalized gift idea! …and since my turnaround time is a week or less we still have time before X-mas to get one made!

New 4×6 ft. banner sized art (on vinyl or fabric) is also now available …perfect for your garage wall!

BIKERNET STAFFER OF THE WEEK–Jack McIntyre – the new Bikernet BAGGERS AND CANTINA Photo Editor.

In Philadelphia I’m known as “Philly’s Favorite Pervert.” I earned that while shooting photos of girls for the cities largest radio station. It’s just their way of saying they love me…

My early years: I joined the United States Marine Corps after attending Penn State. I was in the Artillery Battery and also did combat photography. Once home, I then turned to Photo journalism for the magazines and set up my own websites, which were strictly biker oriented material. After paying my dues, traveling as often as I could afford to, I then found myself contracting to different event staff and magazines. This took years to accomplish, but now I contract with whom I consider the best and most reliable sources in the Industry, folks like Pro Riders Marketing, Bikerpros Media, Iron Works Magazine, Convexx (Las Vegas Bikefest), and of course, the BIKERNET.COM family of websites.

I’ve been up and down this industry, dealt with every magazine editor from 1990 till now, and believe me, the group I just mentioned are the cream of the crop.

In Philly I am partners with Johnny Mac’s Chopper House, (www.johnnymacschopperhouse.com). Our business is that of building of Charity motorcycles for raffle or auction. My particular job within the group is the running/renting of our 2000 sq ft. white CYC photo/video studio know as ELITE STUDIOS (www.elitestudiosPA.com).

I take care of the shooting of the bikes, Hot Rods, models, and products. I also design all of the ad creations, artwork, graphics, and manage the websites. I have more than 10,000 published images worldwide and currently I am limiting my images to Bikernet.com and Iron Works Magazine/blog.

My goal for Bikernet.com is to bring the audience a constant flow of entertaining images and even some video here and there. I strive towards the greatest of motorcycles, the hottest models in the land, and rally coverage that is hard to beat.

THE BAD UNCLE MONKEY REFLECTS ON THE ZOMBIE NATION–The end of days, the zombie apocalypse is upon us. As I sit eating my lunch I can’t help but be amazed at the hordes of people in the restaurant mindlessly tapping away at their Smartphones, unable to hold even the most basic of conversations with the person directly across from them.

Outside it is not much better. People shuffle to and fro with their heads down throwing birds with anger management issues at hapless pigs. They are lost and bewildered. They spend days camping on cold concrete just to buy the latest thing that they don’t need. An opportunity missed when they could have spent that time enjoying any one of the thousands of parks and recreation areas across this great land. Hell, I would even be impressed if they would look up from their “outdated” phones to take the time to look at the beautify architecture that defined our cities, our culture.

Sadly the population it getting stupider. It’s taxing dealing with people day in and day out who don’t understand the basic idea of business, of providing a service for payment. They don’t understand how something that they neglected and ignored for years has now finally quite working. I should guarantee that it would keep working, forever.

The occasional difficult, “challenged” customer is becoming an everyday occurrence. They drag me down to their level, making me dumber as I have to dumb it dumb more and more to the level that a couple idiots would understand and they ask me more absurd questions.

It is days like this that I look forward to throwing my leg over my bike and heading out. Nature, beautiful nature. Bikers understand. There is more to life than being connected all the time (sadly the rush to put more on bikes leaves that statement useless). We understand cause and effect that affects what we do.

We work in and out of traffic, revel in the beauty that surrounds us, beautiful countrysides, beautiful woman, to name a few. We savor drink, no matter the price point. We shuffle our feet to a song that moves us. We know when someone is hurting, when to lend a helping hand, when to leave them alone to work it out themselves. Why because us bikers are social. We interact with the people and places around us. We are alive. Escape into the real world.

Another beautiful day in downtown Wilmington, CA. The Sun is blazin’ and progress is being made on all fronts. This morning it’s a cool 47 degrees headed for a warm 61 degrees this afternoon. Last Saturday we hit the 75 degree mark. The weather for this weekend, might sprinkle Saturday just in time for the IMS Show. Clean streets and happy riders as we head into the finals days of an action packed 2013. But wait, there’s more on the way…….

Speaking of projects. Our 5-Ball Raycer is on the rack at Dr. Willie’s for a short list of to-does before we load and ship to New York for a Dan Thayer Tune Up. The rear foot pegs are looking for a happy spot. We’re real close today.

The Doctor removed the heavy duty STD inner and outer chain cases for a look, seems we had a slight oil leak? While giving the Hot Rod a once over scrutinizing we discovered the Turbo mount had ripped itself into two pieces. My guess is we strained the mount while running on the dyno in San Jose.

Better fix it now, than on the highway or at the Race Track at warp speeds?

Keep an eye out for your Bikernet staff at the IMS Show in Long Beach this weekend.

We have one helleva 2014 comin up. We’ll test and tune on the Highways, the Byways, the Race Tracks and finally, the infamous Bub’s Bonneville Salt Flats in less than ten months.

MRF LOBBYIST TO TESTIFY–just an FYI I have been asked to testify at an EPA field hearing here in Northern VA. The hearing is on the renewable fuels standard.

As of 4:30 today(my last contact with the EPA), I am the only motorcycle advocate testifying at the hearing. Most of the witnesses are from the biofuel
industry. My testimony simply asks for what we have been asking for all along– halt the sale of e-15 while more study is done into the effects on
the power train of a vehicle. I’ll let you know how it turns out.

BAD JUDGE FILES ROCKS THE WORLD–Mark Ciavarella Jr, a 61-year old former judge in Pennsylvania, has been sentenced to nearly 30 years in prison for literally selling young juveniles for cash. He was convicted of accepting money in exchange for incarcerating thousands of adults and children into a prison facility owned by a developer who was paying him under the table.

The kickbacks amounted to more than $1 million.
The Pennsylvania Supreme Court has overturned some 4,000 convictions issued by him between 2003 and 2008, claiming he violated the constitutional rights of the juveniles – including the right to legal counsel and the right to intelligently enter a plea. Some of the juveniles he sentenced were as young as 10-years old.

Ciavarella was convicted of 12 counts, including racketeering, money laundering, mail fraud and tax evasion. He was also ordered to repay $1.2 million in restitution.

His “kids for cash” program has revealed that corruption is indeed within the prison system, mostly driven by the growth in private prisons seeking profits by any means necessary.

MOTORCYCLE BINGO FOR A CAUSE–
How Playing Bingo Can Make a Difference

The number of American households owning motorcycles jumped 26% from 2003 to 2008, while the overall number of U.S. households increased roughly 5%, based on the statistics published by {Women Riders Now}. They also reported that the motorcycle population grew 19% while the U.S. population rose by about 5% during the same period. Due to the popularity of motorcycles, many organizations have used this form of transportation to raise funds. A fun way of raising funds is by playing motorcycle bingo with the game having been used for different charitable purposes.

Legendary Bingo has invited many famous celebrities such as socialite Paris Hilton and “Glee“ star Jane Lynch to be the bingo callers for their fund raising events. Even bingo personalities like veteran actor {Brian Blessed}, who is the resident bingo caller at {bingogodz.com}, has supported many charitable institutions including Brian May’s campaign against a planned badger cull. Bingo has proven to be effective when it comes to raising awareness and funds for various causes that’s why motorcycle organizations have used this game for the same purpose.

In New York, the Adirondack Riders hosted the {25th Annual Kris Amorosi Memorial Bingo Run} last August 4, 2013. Every year the group holds a motorcycle bingo run for different causes; and this year it was for the “Riding for Ryan” cause.

The {Fallen Riders Memorial Fund}, which is an organization of bikers that support their families, hosts outdoor bingo runs all year round. The 9th Annual Biker Bingo Run will be held on May 18, 2014 so you still have time to join the fun and at the same time help the needy.

So instead of spending hours riding a motorcycle for your own pleasure and satisfaction, why not give some of your time and services to a charity motorcycle bingo run, to help worthy causes.

CROSS-COUNTRY VL EFFORT REPORT–
Two more great sponsors have signed on to help support this project. Replicant Metals and Retrocycle are two well known names in the vintage motorcycle industry.

Replicant Metals produces a wide variety of parts for Harley-Davidson twins from 1915 – 1936. Most notably they produce VL sheet metal, which I will be using for this build.

Retrocycle Antique and Modern Motorcycle Parts not only supplies top quality parts, but also builds top quality motorcycles, including VLs. Besides supporting this project with necessary parts, they will be sharing some knowledge gained from years of working with V-series motorcycles.

Don’t forget about our special offer from Flash Productions. They have agreed to provide copies of several of their books to sponsors of this project. Featuring the photography of Jim Miteff, these books are a must have for anyone who considers themselves a biker.

For sponsors at the $100 level, they will donate a signed hardback copy of the Collector’s Edition of Portraits of American Bikers: Life in the 1960s.

For sponsors at the $175 level, they will donate a signed hardback copy of the Collector’s Edition of Portraits of American Bikers: Life in the 1960s and a copy of Portraits of American Bikers: Inside Looking Out.

For sponsors at the $250 level, they will donate a signed hardback copy of the Collector’s Edition of Portraits of American Bikers: Life in the 1960s and a copy of Portraits of American Bikers: Inside Looking Out and a copy ofAsphalt Range.

There is only one week left in this campaign, so we really need your help to keep this project moving forward. Whether you own a motorcycle business and would like to see your parts used on a cross country ride or your just interested in seeing how an antique Harley-Davidson is built, please take the time to check out our site: http://igg.me/at/americanclassic

RED CROSS INCREASES SUPPORT TO THE PHILIPPINES’ TYPHOON HAIYAN TO $16 MILLION
–Additional $5 million is Latest Donation for Red Cross Work in the Philippines.

The American Red Cross today committed an additional $5 million to support the global Red Cross response to Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines, bringing the total to $16 million to date.

The $16 million in funding will be used to purchase and distribute relief items such as food, blankets, hygiene kits, and mosquito nets and to provide cash grants for use when markets begin functioning normally.

“Americans have been very generous in their support of the Philippines, and last week I was able to see firsthand how the American Red Cross is able to provide emergency relief to those affected by this devastating event with that generosity,” said Harold Brooks, senior vice president, international operations for the American Red Cross.

In addition,13 American Red Cross specialists are in the Philippines providing support to the Philippine Red Cross- including a mapping specialist, a shelter specialist, two telecommunication specialist, two assessment specialists, two specialist focusing on providing cash grants and a five-person team to assist the global Red Cross Emergency Response Team in distributing relief supplies.

The Philippine Red Cross is the largest humanitarian organization in the country and thousands of volunteers are engaged in this disaster response. The Philippine Red Cross and its 6,200 volunteers have delivered 44,000 food packages and more than 185,000 gallons of clean water.

Specialized emergency response teams from other Red Cross societies across the globe are working in the Philippines to assist the Philippine Red Cross. These include teams with expertise in logistics, disaster assessment, shelter, health, water and sanitation. They have set up water purification systems, a field hospital, mobile clinics and are delivering relief supplies to affected communities.

The American Red Cross expects to make additional contributions to support the humanitarian response in the coming weeks. Donations received from American Red Cross and other Red Cross partners will aid the Philippines relief and recovery efforts through the Philippine Red Cross and possibly other organizations as experts on the ground determine the best way forward.

HOW TO HELP

Those who want to help can go to www.redcross.org or call 1-800-REDCROSS to donate to typhoon relief. People can also mail in a donation to their local Red Cross chapter. Gifts to the American Red Cross will support disaster relief efforts to help those affected by Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines.

CUSTOM CYCLE CONTROL SYSTEMS– Offers Lifetime Warranty on the New Improved Simplified Air Suspension/SAS

Las Vegas, NV- Custom Cycle Control Systems announced today a new lifetime warranty on all of the machined parts as well as a 3 year “all encompassing” warranty on their new SAS air suspension. If ANYTHING happens to your SAS the first 3 years, take it off and send it back to CCCS (it only take a few minutes), You’ll receive a reconditioned or new unit…no questions asked…and there’s no wait!

Raise and lower your rear end at the touch of a button. Add air pressure to improve ride quality during changing road conditions or while hauling added weight. Also improving the ride quality is a “pre-set factory” dampening valve.

At approximately 150 psi, the bike will be fully raised and the suspension will be resting on its piston bumpers at *maximum ride height*. After that your height will not change, but you can continue to increase air pressure for improved riding during cornering or with a passenger.

The SAS is super easy to install and comes complete with mounting instructions. There’s no compressor to mount, no pressure hoses to run, no fittings to fail…All you have to do is replace your old shocks with a new SAS unit and wire an on/off switch directly to the battery.

The biggest advantage to the SAS vs. “old style” compressor suspension units is that there are no hoses to run…Hoses that after a while get invisible pin holes causing your suspension to leak. It may be hours or days to track down one of these pin holes, but you’ll never have that problem with CCCS’ new SAS System.

You won’t have to remove your EPA canisters to make room for an ugly compressor so you’ll always be legal. Fits all softail Harley-Davidson’s, as well as custom production bikes. Its water-resistant design is perfect for those inclement weather rides and they are manufactured right here in the USA.

MSRP-$1,395.00

For those interested in obtaining more information on Custom Cycle Control Systems new SAS system, you can reach them at 866-438-2129, or 702-438-2129. Check them out online at www.customcyclecontrols.com or email them at lyaple@customcyclecontrols.com.

“When building this show winning ground up custom bike I sourced the very best parts on the market. Naturally that included the Simplified Air Suspension from Custom Cycle Controls as this system rocks!

Being able to slam the bike to the ground at shows, but then at the touch of a button pump it up again, is totally cool. The installation couldn’t be simpler and the unit itself seems bullet proof. Highly recommended.”

BIKERNET UNIVERSITY ENGLISH DEPARTMENT WORD OF THE DAY–

slumgullion sluhm-GUHL-yuhn, SLUHM-guhl-, noun:

1. a stew of meat, vegetables, potatoes, etc.
2. a beverage made weak or thin, as watery tea, coffee, or the like.
3. the refuse from processing whale carcasses.
4. a reddish, muddy deposit in mining sluices.

“…d’yever eat good old fashioned slumgullion boy, ‘taint nothin but scrambled eggs and potatoes all scrambled up together.”

— Jack Kerouac, The Dharma Bums, 1958

We could not eat the bread or the meat, nor drink the “slumgullion.”

— Mark Twain, Roughing It, 1872

Slumgullion is an Americanism dating back to the 1840s. It is perhaps related to the word cullion, which comes from the Latin term meaning “bag” or “testicle.”

HEATHER KNEW TOUCHES A BIKERNET BUCKLE–Hope you like what I have done with your wee piece for Howard Knight.

There is zero chance of me shipping today, although it is done—
We are having a blizzard, and I have a 6+ foot snow drift burying my jeep.

I am hoping for tomorrow, but cross your fingers…its as bad as it gets here today, and
tomorrow may be iffy too 🙁 The whole town is virtually shut down 🙁

Now soup and blankie time…..

SHOW WEEKEND AHEAD—The staff of Biker Pros, the masters behind the Ultimate Builder Competition at all the IMS Shows are staying at the Biker Interplanetary Headquarters in the Wilmington ghetto. Marilyn Stemp the World Wide Editor and Imperial Empress of IronWorks is flying in this afternoon to discuss world wide web management systems and intrinsic behavior pattern of Renegade our depressed Bikernet Staffer.

Of course nothing makes any sense, but what the hell. The Bikernet Performance editor’s mantra everyday is: “Wow, we are so lucky!”

With all the hub-bub this weekend we still have a mission to complete the shipping crate to send our Paughco frame and Class Glass belly Tank body to Kent Weeks at Lucky Devil’s in Houston.

Wil, a biker who works at Quality Refrigeration helped me find some massive conduit to protect the tank ends. I know it’s crazy, but I’ll give it hell to get this shipped.

Hang on for all the reports as the action heats up, and have a helluva holiday season.

Ride Forever,
