CHOPPERS, BOBBERS AND CUSTOM BIKES – THURSDAY NEWS for SEPTEMBER 12, 2013

Hey,

Was this week interesting or what. A brother encouraged over 800 riders, maybe 1000 to ride to Washington D.C. in protest of the Muslim 9/11 gathering. That’s what I call heart, and I wish like hell I was there standing next to Americans supporting America.

Early this week some blog attacked Bikernet, which encouraged our team to look at everything we do and how we do it. We don’t profess to be the biggest whatever, and we are not a blog, generally. But now we will work harder on ours.

We’ve always been about content, entertainment, fun, sex, and custom motorcycles. We don’t want to be a gossip column. In fact, I know how tough it is to make it in the custom motorcycle industry. I know how tough it is to keep this sport free of extreme government intrusion. So we bend over backwards to help anyone in the industry, and to support the folks who dedicate their lives to keeping bikers free.

There are plenty of cool web sites, like the Aging Rebel. He devotes most of his content to clubs. There’s Exif in Australia with some of the coolest bike features in the world. So, what the fuck? Enjoy any web site or magazine that rocks your world. Enjoy yourself, and ride free goddammit.

Let’s hit the news.

The Thursday News is sponsored in part by IronWorks Magazine, Cycle Source, and BikerPics.org

THIS JUST IN FROM OUR FEATURED GIRL OF THE WEEK– Here is the little bio info for you. One thing I think is cool is that Montana is isolated. Every time I tell someone in the industry where I live they seem very surprised because they never would’ve thought of me coming out of this state.

Katy worked with the Biker Pros, AMD show team in Milwaukee, at the 110th posing with bikes and editing video footage way into the wee hours of the night, every night. She has an amazingly positive attitude, strong as steel work ethic, and builds bikes with Jim Guifra and the AFT Custom Cycles team.

I was born in Nebraska, moved to MT at a young age. Growing up my friends would tell me I should be a comedian. I played college basketball but ended up with a back injury, so I dove into studying Radio-Television Broadcast News at the University of Montana in Missoula.

While finishing my bachelors degree I was also working as an on air radio personality for a couple country and a hip hop radio stations. I went out to Sacramento to do a tv news internship and was barely making ends meet. I was sleeping on the floor of my apartment, had no furniture and decided to try modeling to make money. I was lucky to find Jim at AFT Customs in Jackson, CA.

My Dad, both brothers and uncle all ride motorcycles and when I found AFT I thought it would be a great match. At first I didn’t realize I would help build the motorcycles AFT produces. I never heard of women that model also working on the customization of a bike. I thought that was so unique. Since I became a part of the AFT family in 2010 I’ve worked on two bikes. I’ve done a bit of welding and have redesigned a swing arm with lightening holes. Its hard to get out to the AFT shop while living in Montana, but I try to get out there so I’m familiar with the motorcycle and am a part of the build.

3 weeks ago was also my first time working for Bikerpros in Milwaukee. It was basically like being a reporter. I interviewed the builders, got some awesome video of their motorcycles, then edited it all together.

I think I’m pretty lucky to be in a position where I can throw on a bikini if someone needs a model, or use my technical skills to do some intense video editing or write a savvy website posting. Its one thing to have a decent appearance for a photoshoot but I think women are even sexier and more appealing when they have that education, or skill set to help them excel and be independent. Its pretty cool I’ve found a spot in a male dominated industry and continue to learn and meet some of the most talented people.

MILWAUKEE 110TH AMD SHOW WINNER SPORTS 500 Hours of Airbrushing
People’s Choice Award Winner at AMD Invitational Custom Bike Show – Tom Hedrick.

Tom Hedrick’s 1987 H-D Heritage Softail is super slick. It features a seat by Howard Knight of Rocking K Custom Leathers, fairing and Milwaukee Iron fenders and dash. The go-fast parts include a Woods Prowler Cam, twin Mikuni units, Rivera manifold, nitrous and Panhead-style rocker box covers and custom pipes.

But the coolest item of the Heritage is the paint. Dustin Hobert put 500 hours in airbrushing.
Bob Kay Interview painter Dustin Hobert at the AMD Invitational Custom Bike Show about Tom Hedrick’s 1987 H-D Heritage Softail.

In Harley-Davidson motorcycles, the softail frame is designed to look like the hardtail bikes of the past, while still offering the comfort of rear suspension. The shock absorbers are positioned along the axis of the motorcycle, tucked away under the transmission.

There are several Harley-Davidson models with the Softail frame, including the Softail Standard, Custom, Springer Softail, Heritage Softail, Heritage Springer, Night Train, Deluxe, Deuce, Fat Boy, the Dark Custom Cross Bones, and the Dark Custom Blackline.

WISCONSIN HIGHWAY NAME CHANGE EFFORT–U.S. Harley-Davidson Heritage of Honor Highway 45 – could be the 45th designated highway/bridge in Wisconsin. From Bristol, Illinois border to Land O‘Lakes near Michigan, there are Harley stories to tell and messages to share, as there are for all of the Wisconsin named highways and bridges.

Currently 32 highways and 12 bridges are recognized through State Statute according to the current 2013 maps. Only 13 of the 44 have a total 33 signs. Several have multiple signs including Korean Hwy 51 and Hwy 32 – 32nd Division with 5 each.

Many of these 44 highways/bridges of honor cherish veterans, military and other proud patriots. Each community through groups, businesses, families and individuals can reflect their own prominence by recognizing historic, cultural, ethnic and religious preservation.

Alas — revealing exceptional facts and feats, legends, tall stories and mysteries can honor local pride on the interpretative signs. Educating our youth, visitors and ourselves is paramount.

Beyond unique and exceptional, spiritual transcendence can be captured. We discover hidden resources and harness unlimited potential by getting fired up!

Groups, patriots, veteran’s posts/auxiliary, etc. can initiate interpretative signs for approximately $900.—per sign. This includes 2 sign posts, construction, paint, and installation fees. The Wisconsin DOT helps with the verbiage and process.

The State of Wisconsin and the Federal government prefer sign locations off the roadway. This can be negotiated according to State Statute. Taxpayer dollars cannot usually pay for these highway signs.

People traveling Wisconsin roadways must be reminded of the sacrifice and freedom Americans have made. We can spearhead progress towards installing road signs for all the highways and bridges. This should be done under the direction of our State Legislature, clubs, veterans and patriotic groups.

To those of us present, those passed on and all we represent, let us again lead the charge to properly recognize our heroes, military, fire fighters, law enforcement and freedom loving Americans by getting these road signs installed.

God Bless You, your loved ones and our troops.

 VIDEO OF THE WEEK–The classic!

–from Vern

QUOTE OF THE WEEK—from Infamous, Truman Capote movie. A farmer talks about doing good as adding weights to your soul to hold you firm when a wind of temptation comes. The wind can be in the form of drink, drugs, temptation, or the wrong woman. Unfortunately, when that wind comes it picks you up light as a leaf.

FEATURE ARTICLE, A week on the road with Bandit, Hammer, Englishman and Edge.
Choppers, Bobbers & Custom Bikes–

Here is the link:
http://bikerpros.com/a-week-on-the-road-with-bandit-hammer-englishman-and-edge/

I’m sitting here at 30,000 feet coming in exactly one week from the time I started this campaign beginning at the Harley-Davidson 110th Anniversary celebration. Along with my co-hort, Bob Kay, we produced the AMD Invitational Custom Bike Show at the Harley-Davidson Museum.

It was a kick ass show with 31 exceptional bikes. Over 1.8 million in rolling iron.

Speaking of Bandit, I twisted his arm for about a month until he relented and flew into Milwaukee to award the Bikernet Editor’s Choice award at the AMD Custom Show. He’s media royalty so we sent the limo and chauffeured him around during the Harley-Davidson 110th Celebration.

EDITORIAL FROM A READER–I am Very Concerned for My Country and I need to Say this, I once had a Egytpian Roommate back in 92, in Downey, Ca. he told me he had to leave Eygpt because he was Christian and they were being slaughtered by the Islamic Muslims there.. Literally Slaughtered !!!!! The stories he told me were unbelieveable for this day and age, or so I thought, till he told me all that was going on there at that time, and how it happened.

Being passive is going to tear this Country apart one of these days. It’s happened to other countries recently, and is going on all over the World right now…Why would anyone think it won’t happen here… I am not a Christian, but I do believe in My God, and it’s not Allah, and in there views, if you don’t believe in Allah, You are an Infadel, Period !!!!!!!

Were handing this Country over one tiny area at a time. I grew up in Reseda, Ca. the Heart of the San Fernando Valley. My Mom still lives there. Today, it’s being overrun by Muslims, they have taken over most part in that area. From what I have seen personally, that’s just the beginning. If they become powerful enough, they will rise up and there will be War in this Country…. A Religious War!!!

Why? Because We didn’t want to Offend a Religion that only means to take over, wherever it is. Were a Christian based Country, but all religions are welcome “These Days”, but No other religion is still waging War everywhere it gets powerful enough to do so. No other in Modern times. If they Succeed here, All Non-Believers will be Screwed Period.. That means ALL NON- BELIEVERS, Not Just Christians !!!!!!

Something to think about if You want Your Kids and Grandkids to still have the way of life we have enjoyed in this Country! What they do in there own Countries is their business, what they do here in the United States of America is Our Business. I Really Do wish That this was not True, but it is, This happens over time, Not all at once. Open Your Eyes, and Really pay attention.

EDITOR’S CHOICE SHOW UPDATE–First of all I want to thank everyone that participated in the Editor’s Choice Bike Show in Sturgis! While these shows are still in their infancy, I think if we continue forward there is definite potential for growth with this event. Not only is publication participation key but each and every one of us promoting these events via all avenue available to us will only add to the success of these shows. As always I’d love to hear your feedback and suggestions moving forward. I’m here to make this show as easy and successful as possible for you.

Now that Sturgis is behind us let’s move on to Las Vegas Bikefest!!

Since Vegas was where the Editor’s Choice started last year we are happy to be working with Mindi Cherri and her team again for this Year’s Vegas Bikefest and another round of Editor’s Choice Awards!

All the arrangements are being made for this event already but in an attempt to continue the idea of taking this show to the readers we have added the public aspect of this show to the LVBF custom bike show. One thing has come up In conversation with Marilyn from Iron Works who reminded us that the first of these was started to bring kudos to the rest of the bikes of Artistry in Iron who didn’t get the one and only award from that show.

We are proposing that the Editors award an editor’s choice award for the public Editor’s Choice Show and separate award for the Artistry in Iron Bikes. We (the Broken Spoke) will be taking care of the awards, and of course hosting a lunch for the Editor’s, all you will need to do is select a bike from each of the two shows, the Artistry in Iron and the open to the public Custom Bike show…That is if everyone is in agreement to this idea.

The Editor’s Choice Show Awards will take place Friday, October 4th. The Editors have pretty much all day to pick their bike from the Custom Bike Show and Artistry In Iron Bikes. Awards will be from 5:00 to 6:30 on the main stage.

In any event we need to know what magazines will be participating in the Editor’s Choice Show in Vegas so we can get press releases drafted and sent out to everyone. Again, if we could get your help by passing around this info that would be great. One thing we would like to do is to create a Facebook Event on the LVBF Facebok Page that we can all share and generate more interest.
Thanks for your time and looking for your feedback. Hope to see you all in Vegas!

SPAGHETTI THURSDAYS AT THE CHOWDERBARGE—One of the Bikernet babes now owns the Chowder Barge, a floating restaurant in Wilmington, California. If you’re ever in Wilmington, the Port of Los Angeles, Long Beach or San Pedro, you need to check out the Chowder Barge. They have an amazing Double-up Chowder with extra clams, and the beer is always cold.

Tiny, the small boat, 400-pound Tugboat Captain recently passed away and there will be a memorial for him next Tuesday at the Barge. Don’t ask me the address, just turn south on Henry Ford from Anaheim and look to the right. You can’t miss the signs.

LIFESTYLE DEAL OF THE WEEK, 2002 NIGHT TRAIN FOR JUST $10,995.00—Here’s an awesome Night Train with only 11,925 miles on it! It has a custom paint job by Rock & Roll, touring seat, Screamin’ Eagle 2 slip-on exhaust, high flow air cleaner, Harley Davidson “airfoil” pegs front and rear, eagle timing cover, eagle derby cover, chrome chin spoiler, Harley Davidson “knurled” grips and brake pedal pad, fork mount turn signals, mini tach in billet bar clamp mount, tall risers, chrome switches and housings, leather tank bib with pouch, mini sissybar with toolbag, chrome rear axle covers, chrome swingarm inserts, chrome swingarm pivot caps, chrome Harley Davidson mirrors, and a chrome oil temperature dipstick.

We don’t get bike’s this nice in everyday, and when we do they sell right away, so don’t delay, come to Lifestyle Cycles today!

SPECIAL CUSTOM WHEEL ALERT—I recently had lunch with a couple of custom wheel manufacturers, who expressed concern about e-bay and internet wheel deals. They knew of wheel seconds and substandard wheels being sold as quality merchandise on the open market. They wanted me to warn you against purchasing wheels or brake components that are not backed up. It’s one thing if you buy some cheap stuff from a swap meet, then you know you’re rolling the dice.

Otherwise, if you buy your wheels from any reputable source you will be working with experienced manufacturers who stand behind their products. They have reputable customer service programs, and product liability insurance, so you’re covered, if you have a problem. Just be careful.

No Rain, No Rain! Safe, Fast and Safe!

Our Bonneville gear is unloaded, sorted and semi-ready for the upcoming 2014 season. Paul Kittrell of Lyndall Racing Brakes loaned us his 10×10 heavy duty pop up tent (all joints are now oiled) for the 2013 Bub Speed Trials. We lashed a Bikernet 10×10 to the Lyndall unit and made camp for the week on the salt.

Seems every afternoon we had a Chinese fire drill due to incoming wind and rain. Incoming weather, hot rod in the trailer, off with the tops, load tote boxes, help the neighbors, haul ass to the motel to dry out a couple of times.

We chased the will-not-idle gremlin most of the week. The unanimous conclusion and solution, prep the Raycer for the dyno, load, and ship to Dan Thayer in New York. Dan will troubleshoot the wiring system and fuel injection components.

Marc Susman and his Crew at Colorado Customs are machining a tuner/mechanic friendly backing plate for the air plenum with removable velocity stacks offering a variety of tuning options. Ceramic rotor material is in route for the rear Gen. 2 Busa 17″ wheel, the front carriers will also be detailed.

Ceramic bearings will be added for the edge that may or may not be needed on the big end of the race track. The lightweight Busa wheels coupled with the latest 320 mm composite rotors will make one happy hot rod in the handling and stopping department.

The 5-Ball Raycer will idle and tune in the very near future.

Stay Tuned……..

OFFICIAL BIKERNET PHILOSOPHER BACK FROM THE MOUNTAIN WITH A MESSAGE–Show Don’t Tell.

If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader. John Quincy Adams

Over the years we have been told by many people how to do things that they could not do themselves. My father often would say do as I say not as I do– what a load of crap. I have heard religious leaders tell me how to Live a Life that they themselves were so far away from it was pathetic. I have sat in classes with teachers who taught lessons they did not understand themselves.

As I have grown I have learned that there is always a lesson to learn even from these kinds of people. For instance I am grateful to my parents for I learned what I didn’t want to be as a parent from them therefore becoming a better parent to my girls. The religious leaders I had heard over the years taught me that to believe the opposite to their teachings. There is Higher learning not based on shame, fear and guilt.

Today I lead by example, I show, not tell. I am example of the Spirit in me expressing Life to the fullest. I Live a Life of Love, Joy, Peace, Health, Abundance and Prosperity. Each day I move to a Higher Level of Consciousness, a Higher level of expressing Life. I inspire others to Know how Great Life is by showing not telling. I Know that my Family and Friends are gifts I am Grateful for them in My Life, so I am careful to show and not tell.

And So It Is
Namaste’
Today is a gift, Live It, Love It, find Joy in every opportunity!

STATE TROOPER MOUNT MOTORCYCLE FOR ENFORCEMENT ON THE DRAGON

By Don Jacobs Knoxville News Sentinel

State troopers on motorcycles will saturate U.S. Highway 129, especially the section called “The Dragon” in the upcoming weekend because of two events expected to bring a deluge of riders to the area.

Motorcycle riding troopers from Tennessee Highway Patrols districts in Knoxville, Chattanooga, Cookeville and Fall Branch will converge on the federal highway during Sept. 13-15, according to the state Department of Safety and Homeland Security.

A $71,116.79 grant from the Governor’s Highway Safety Office, which covers a period from Oct. 1, 2012, to Sept. 30, 2013, will pay overtime funds to the motorcycle officers.

The decision to saturate “The Dragon” with motorcycle officers was prompted by two events this weekend expected to bring heavy motorcycle traffic to the challenging road. In Maggie Valley, N.C., the “Thunder in the Smokies” event will be under way and in Pigeon Forge the “Fall Rod Run” will be held.

The Dragon is an 11-mile section of U.S. Highway 129 that attracts motorcycle enthusiasts from around the world because of its 318 curves. According to the state, one motorcyclist has died so far this year on U.S. Highway 129.

Officials said the state troopers will especially be alert for aggressive and reckless driving, speeding, impaired driving and seat belt use for four-wheel vehicles. Authorities expect to have a sobriety checkpoint established on U.S. Highway 129 on Saturday

Contact state Senator Ben Hueso NOW
The 2013 California legislative session ends this Friday and state Senator Ben Hueso is akey vote to stopping several anti-gun bills. He MUST hear your OPPOSITION to these bills TOMORROW, September 11.

It is CRITICAL that you express your opposition during this last week of the legislative session in Sacramento. Contact information for Senator Hueso is provided below.  Assembly Bill 48 (Skinner) bans the sale of parts and repair kits capable of converting magazine capacity to greater than ten rounds and bans the simple possession of any magazines holding more than ten rounds.

Senate Bill 374 (Steinberg) bans the future sale or transfer of and classify ALL semi-automatic rifles with a detachable magazine or holding more than ten rounds of ammunition as “assault weapons.” Continued legal possession would require that you REGISTER and pay a FEE (TAX) on ALL your semi-autos newly classified as “assault weapons.”

Remind your family, friends, fellow gun owners, sportsmen and Second Amendment supporters that they also must contact state Senator Hueso and urge him to OPPOSE the bills listed above. The Golden State needs all law-abiding Californians contacting their state legislators to save the Second Amendment.

NRA NEEDS YOUR HELP–Right now, NRA-ILA is waging a bare-knuckle legal brawl for the survival of our gun rights in over a dozen courtrooms around the country. We didn’t want these fights… not on top of the epic battles we’re currently waging against Congress and the Obama-Biden-Bloomberg anti-gun machine.
But if we don’t shift our attention to the courts immediately, we could lose the Second Amendment in a heartbeat.

With the single stroke of a pen, anti-gun judges can create legal precedents that will destroy our precious freedoms overnight…the same freedoms you and I have worked decades to build and defend.Take the case of Peruta v. County of San Diego for example. In this California case, government and gun-ban lawyers are trying to convince federal judges that our Founding Fathers only wanted you to have the right to own a gun inside your home – and that your Second Amendment rights are null and void the minute you walk out your front door.

If we lose this battle, state legislatures and the federal government will have a green light to strip YOU of your fundamental right to self defense outside the home – no matter where you live!
Support NRA-ILA’s Legal Action Project today!

And this case is just the tip of the iceberg. The battle we’re fighting in New York could ultimately decide whether or not YOU can own a semi-automatic firearm – no matter where you live! The battle we’re fighting in Colorado could ultimately decide if YOU can own a standard capacity magazine – no matter where you live!

If we lose any of these individual cases it will have far reaching and devastating consequences on your Right to Keep and Bear Arms for decades to come. That’s why I’m launching the NRA-ILA Legal Action Project and asking YOU to stand strong with me today in this critical mission.

NRA-ILA is the legal arm of your NRA. Our job is to defend and advance your freedom in the court of law, and we take our job seriously. In fact, the hard-fought victories we’ve won over the years built the foundation for the very freedoms that you and I enjoy today. But the courtroom battles we’re waging right now are bigger than anything we’ve ever faced. And I need to recruit an army of NRA-ILA’s strongest and most well-informed supporters, like you, to fight by my side until the bitter end in every one of these legal battles.

That’s why I’m asking you to give $20, $30, $50, $75, $150, or more if you can, to help us win every one of these critical cases today.

The future of our freedom depends on the action you take right now. Thank you.

MODESTO POLICE TO FOCUS ON BIKERS
Modesto police will keep a close eye on motorcyclists this month. In a specialized motorcycle safety enforcement operation to reduce deaths and injuries, extra officers will be on duty to patrol areas frequented by motorcyclists and where crashes typically occur, the department announced, the department announced Thursday.

Officers will look for violations by drivers and riders alike that can lead to motorcycle crashes. They will crack down on drivers and cyclists who are under the influence of drugs or alcohol, speeding, making illegal turns or any other dangerous violation. Over the past two years in Modesto, there have been two motorcycle fatalities, according to a news release from the department.

There were 78 other motorcyclists injured in crashes, including nine hurt in alcohol-related accidents. As the economy improves, police say, there likely will be more miles driven by all vehicles, plus more novice motorcycle riders who are untrained and unable to handle the power of today’s motorcycles.

Riders can get training through the California Motorcyclist Safety Program. Information and training locations are available at www.ca-msp.org or (877) 743-3411.

BIKER BELLES AUCTION AT THE CHIP— A custom Harley Davidson helped raise a record donation for charity during the Biker Belles auction on Aug. 6, 2013 at the Sturgis Buffalo Chip. The one-of-a-kind motorcycle, donated by Bruce Rossmeyer’s Daytona Harley Davidson, was customized by moto-celebrity, Jessi Combs, for the Velocity television show, “All Girls Garage.”

The program features female mechanics repairing and upgrading classic automobiles and motorcycles, and during its Friday, Sept. 14 episode, it will spotlight both the Buffalo Chip’s Biker Belles celebration and this custom Harley.
In the upcoming episode of All Girls Garage, Jessi Combs highlights the reasons why the Biker Belles charity ride is of particular interest—celebrating women and the role they play in shaping the culture, sport, art and history of motorcycling.

Proceeds from the event for which Jessi customized the bike benefit two local charities: Helping with Horsepower and the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum and Hall of Fame.

On Sept. 14, viewers can see exclusive footage of Jessi leading the Biker Belles ride through the scenic Black Hills on the Softail Slim she customized for the show. The 2013 Biker Belles event began at the Lodge at Deadwood with an inspiring symposium of leading industry women. The day-long event then ended at the Sturgis Buffalo Chip with a special catered reception, a fashion show featuring Harley Davidson MotorClothes and a live and silent auction.

The auction featured an array of tempting items, but the All Girls Garage customized Harley was the prize everyone had their eye on. When bidding came to a close, it was Pat Simmons of the Doobie Brothers that held the winning bid. The guitar legend and motorcycle enthusiast explained that he purchased the custom Harley Davidson as a present for his wife. Including Simmons’ purchase, the Biker Belles auction raised over $36,000 for the two charities.

“We’re proud to support women riders by hosting the Biker Belles for the fifth year,” says Rod Woodruff, president of the Sturgis Buffalo Chip. “Seeing Pat Simmons give the All Girls Garage bike to his wife was extra special, considering it was here at the Chip that the couple first met. I look forward to reliving that moment again when the program airs.”

To see this remarkable bike and highlights from the Biker Belles celebration, watch Jessi Combs host All Girls Garage on Velocity, at 11:30 a.m. ET/PT, Sept. 14. For more information about the Biker Belles celebration and to reserve your place in 2014, visit www.bikerbelles.com or call 605-347-9000.

Special thanks to co-owner of Bruce Rossmeyer’s Daytona Harley Davidson, Shelly Rossmeyer; Motorcycle Hall of Famer, Cris Sommer-Simmons; safety advocate, Vicki Roberts-Sanfelipo; Brand Director of Advanstar Communications Powersports Group, Tigra Tsujikawa; Trish Horstman of Baker Drive Train and celebrity rider, Kristy Swanson. Without their support and dedication to motorcycling, this event would not have been possible.

For more information and to join the 2014 Biker Belles celebration visit www.bikerbelles.com or call (605) 347-9000.

LIMITED EDITION PRINTS ON SALE–Harley Prints by MDA Ambassador and Milwaukee Artist on Sale–MDA Ambassador Reagan Imhoff wanted the artwork she created with Harley-Davidson designer Mathew Hintz to “raise a lot of money for MDA so we can have more scientists to make medicines.”

The original drawing of a purple Harley-Davidson Softail Breakout motorcycle brought in $3500 on August 31 at the MDA auction during the 110th Anniversary Celebration. The pair hopes to raise even more with sales of the limited edition, signed prints, available through www.hintzstudios.com.

“I’m happy our artwork raised some money, and hope we sell all of the prints!” said Reagan, who has Spinal Muscular Atrophy, a painful neuromuscular disease. “It makes me feel really good that I can help MDA by sharing things I love to do. I can’t wait to make some more art with Mat, he was really fun to work with.”

Hintz will donate 10% to MDA of any commissioned artwork he paints through the end of 2013. In addition, the pair are planning to work together on future projects, such as the MDA Black-N-Blue Ball in 2014. It’s rumored that piece may have butterflies.

“I’m excited to continue to raise funds for MDA and inspire Reagan’s artwork,” said Hintz, who has who has created logos for MDA events since 1999. “It’s wonderful that we raised so much, and I’m honored to partner with MDA into the future.”
Mathew Hintz of Hintz Studios (www.hintzstudios.com) creates personalized and visceral motorcycle paintings by sculpting the canvas with layers of paint and coating it with a high-glass finish.

He’s worked on hundreds of art production pieces, from helmets to tank medallions to full paint schemes for motorcycles. Harley-Davidson is in his DNA. Hintz graduated from Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 1998.

2013 GRAY GHOST II PROJECT WRAP UP–IronWorks’ friends Warner Riley, Mike Witt and Jim “Jimbo” Fischer (the Gray Ghost team) have been diligently trying to go where every underfunded race program has tried to go but didn’t make it, into the record books at Bonneville.

During this time “Jimbo” has been dutifully keeping us abreast at the progress of the team and their accomplishments. Here’s his report from the recent BUB Speed trials at the Bonneville Salt Flats:

“Shortly after coming home from the 2012 AMA/BUB Bonneville Motorcycle Grand National Speed Trials, our Crew Chief Warner Riley posed the question, “What’s the plan for next year Jim?”

The answer which could have been anticipated was simple. “Lets try and go faster Warner, its what we do isn’t it, and while we are at it, lets try and establish new records at the two premiere Land Speed Venues east of Bonneville.

Two of which we’ll bring both the 1974 Iron Gray Ghost as well as our one year old Alloy 100 cu. in. S&S powered Sportster. We’ll call it, our attempt at a trifecta.”

I saw that mischievous grin and look in Warner’s eyes that I have grown to love, with near sparks emanating from his ears now I could see the wheels turning in his ever calculating mind. His reply was, “Two bikes is more then twice the work Jim.”

So the stage was set.

After considerable time in freshening up the top ends of both bikes, and some needed chassis cleanup, pre-registration was made for the first leg of the 2013 race season, the East Coast Timing Assoc. Wilmington Ohio Mile June 8 – 9. The old 1974 Iron Gray Ghost needed to top an existing record of 117.329, that record was crushed with the help of our new S&S 55th Anniversary Black E carburetor, with a best speed of 141.958.

Next it was time for our 100 cu. in. S&S Superstock Alloy Gray Ghost II which needed to top 167.529 which it did with a speed of 170.454.

The first leg of our adventure was a success bringing home two new land speed records from the Wilmington Ohio Mile. A well run event, smack dab in the middle of our beautiful Country, that we will be sure to attend many times over.

Hoping for some fresh parts, the preparation for the second leg of the journey went forward without delay. The Loring Timing Assoc. 1-1/2 mile track in Caribou Maine is set for July 12 – 13. Pre-registration was made, again just a freshening up of the top ends of both bikes since a glitch arose for our new parts. Changing the sprocket ratio again brought us an even faster speed with our new S&S 55th. Anniversary Black E carburetor on the Iron Gray Ghost with record speeds of 146.979 in the 1350 M/CPF class and 145.6 in the M/CPG class, not too shabby for a 49 year old Sportster.

Next up again was our Alloy 100 cu. in. S&S powered 1998 Sportster which also turned its best speeds to date with a record setting 174.168 in the 1650 A/PF class and a 171.164 in the A/PG class. The second leg of our journey brought home four new records.

Next up was the, “Big One”. The AMA/BUB Grand National Motorcycle Speed Trials at the World Famous Bonneville Salt Flats, Utah. Returning from the LTA event we find several boxes of much needed new replacement parts from S&S. With only several weeks to departure for the salt flats, the mid-night oil was burning every day after work, since I find a need to work $$ to be able to $$ fulfill this need for speed.

This time we will be bringing just the Alloy Gray Ghost II and chasing two different class records. Pre-registration was made and travel plans set. The fuel class record to beat was 167.561, which was topped with a new record two way average of 172.872. Next was to chase the gas class record of 169.+ which was done with a two way average 174.946. Our top speed for the event was 176.482. Not too shabby for a Naturally aspirated “Lil Sportster” running naked. Are we havin fun or what !

In summary, we had a rather successful trifecta, establishing eight new Land Speed Records at three different Land Speed venues. None of this is a result of any individual effort, this season was a true test of a Team effort. Our Team Crew Chief, and head task master Warner Riley, our Master Tuner Mike Witt from Woodstock Harley Davidson, all the Great talent at S&S, Jan Smith, Gene Dlask, Jeff Bailey, Dan Kinsey, Steve Rominsky, and certainly with the blessings of George Smith, it all came together.

Oh well, yes I did a little wrenching here and there and some chassis work, besides having the privilege of piloting these two bikes. What a Team ! And to think this journey all started twelve years ago when my wife Barbara found that old, rolling basket case 1974 Sportster and suggested that I needed to “get back into it.” Thank you Sweetheart!

And thanks also to Wayne & Donna Pingel, Auto-Meter precision gauges, Andrews Products, Magnetrol Flow & Control, and most of all to George Smith and S&S Proven Performance for having faith in our Team.

It takes a Team!

HOLY SHIT—Life is so strange. One day your ol’ lady runs off and the next you start a new Bonneville project with a bang. We have confirmed that we will power our streamlined trike effort with a JIMS 135-inch twin cam monster and a 5 or 6 speed JIMS transmission. Hiro from Vegas caught fire last year, but this year he set several records over 200 mph with this JIMS 135-inch engine with a ProCharger. We hope to bring you a report on his efforts in the near future.

So one day a good friend passes, or you get a bullshit ticket, or have a fender bender, and the next you win the lotto, fall in love, or get a bonus from your boss. Life is strange like that.

So what’s the deal? We should read Professor Yale’s inspirational musings and take heart. From my humble outlaw prospective I look at life with two notions in mind. Never give up, or stop. As long as you keep at it, good things will come, or you will make them happen.

Second: Give unto others. If everyday you attempt to help others, work for charities, assist friends, help family, support your industry in any way, it comes back. But it comes back physically, as well as spiritually. Just this week in the Week magazine researchers discovered a level of happiness from people who emphasize service to others and a connection to community shows a pattern of gene expression linked to less inflammation and stronger immunity to serious disease, according psychophysiologist Barbara Fredrickson in ScienceDaily.com. Interesting.

And so it is established in the Bikernet Code of the West. We’ve been bikers most of our stinking lives. So we help out the industry and anyone in the industry whenever possible. It doesn’t matter if they are customers or not. We’re not about the dirt, but the creative, the freedom, the ride, the adventure, and the art.

That’s Ray Wheeler, in his abode in the Bikernet Interplanetary Headquarters. He’s the Dr. of helping folks, mostly with filtered Kangen water and health advice. He would save the world if given half a chance. He hauled jugs of water to Bonneville to keep the crews hydrated. He’s all about helping others.

I need to head to Bennett’s Performance tomorrow to wrap up a tech, and work on a Rivera tech next week, then a Metal Sports tech. I forgot to place the above image in Rogue’s tech of Bikernet Baggers, but I’ll get to it.

More features and action from all over the country headed your way.

Ride Forever,

–Bandit
