PRE-STURGIS RUN THURSDAY NEWS FOR JULY 25TH 2013

Hey,

This has been an interesting week, to say the least. I’m beginning my search for a solid formula for aligning my Mudflap girl FXR, and Kyle brought up laser measurements. I’ll let you know. Speaking of Mudflap girls and such, there has been some pressure on me to be more conservative with the girls.

But just the other day a brother pushed back. He liked the old days of more whiskey and women chasing. I hate to bring this up, but my age is getting in the way of finding the 6th Mrs. Ball, although Lena Fairless is always after me, and she could be my granddaughter. I’m looking for a couple of young gun contributors to bring the fever back. In fact, I think I will ask Lena to write for Bikernet.

So, what do you say? Should Bikernet open a strip joint or a high-tech center? Ah, the questions of life. Let’s hit the news.

The Thursday News is sponsored in part by IronWorks and Cycle Source magazines.

ARMOND RETURNS–I was talking yesterday with a guy I’ve known for 25 years, and just learned he went to high school with Armond. More than just going to school together Bob Sage was a friend of Armond’s and had some neat stories about it all. Like the time Armond’s mom’s Cadillac got shot up in the driveway because the shooters mistook it for Armond’s Caddy.

MORE SERVICES FROM CARL’S CYCLE SUPPLY–We offer a variety of services including Long Block Rebuilds, Heads, Knuckhead Rebuilds, Panhead Rebuilds, Manifold/Intake, Carburetors, Transmissions, Frames/Forks, Machining Services.

Manifolds and Intake Systems:

It is of the utmost importance to have an airtight seal on the intake system of your engine. The plumber intake manifold is a very well designed sealing system, however over time and heat cycling the insert can develop leaks. These leaks, which happen between the head casting and the threaded insert, have to be addressed in order for your motor to perform at its peak. First we pressure test the insert-to-head seal, and repair as necessary.

Now that the inserts are sealed, we move onto the intake manifold. First we reform the seal surface by pressing plugs inside the holes, and then we machine a new sealing surface.

Now we machine up new seals out of a high tech material called PEEK, which is gas, oil, and heat resistant. Then we surface the carburetor face of the manifold.

Carburetors:

The linkert carburetor was a well-designed and popular carburetor for both Harleys and Indians.

We start with resurfacing the mounting flange of the body. Now we install throttle shaft bushings and line ream them to fit the new throttle shaft.
Then we fit the venturi and install the correct fuel nozzle.

Now we assemble the rest of the correctly plated parts to the nickel or painted body. We make sure that the needle and seat are sealing.
Finally we install and adjust the carburetor float. We use a high tech floats in all of our motors that is machined out of a closed cell foam that is impervious to modern gas additives.

Transmissions:

We pay as much attention to the transmission as we do the motor. We start out by disassembling, cleaning and inspecting all of the parts.
We install and line hone new races and bushings. We fit new bearings to the main drive gear. We assemble the complete transmission with all new bushings and bearings, and set up the correct countershaft and third gear endplay.
Next come the shifting forks, we check them for straightness and wear. Now we time them to the shifting drum to insure a smooth shifting transmission.

Now we move onto the kicker cover and gears. We install new bushings in the cover, and line-hone them to fit the kicker arm.
Now we install the kicker gears on the main-shaft, making sure the bushings and dogs are in tolerance. Finally we install the powder painted kicker arm and spring to the cover and bolt it up to the case.

Frames and Forks:

We have all of the jigs and fixtures to straighten and align frames and forks for all models and years. We have been doing our own frame alignment for over fifteen years and have many satisfied customers nationwide.

We align all of our forks and frames off of a center line to insure that the bike will not only go together easily during the assembly stage but also ride down the road with ease.
We have not run across a frame that we cannot repair; from simple straightening to neck replacement we’re capable of doing it all.

Machining Services:

We have all the necessary machine tools in house to fix or repair any damaged or broken part that we run across during the restoration process. Some of the services we provide include, machining miss-matched cases to work together, machining and or replacing motor mounts, decking cylinders, machining out OHV breathers, fin repair, transmission side-cover thread replacement, and pretty much anything else a bike could need.

KLOCK WERKS PRE-STURGIS BASH–Just wanted to invite everyone heading out to Sturgis to our annual Pre-Sturgis Party on Thursday, Aug. 1 from 4 to 9 pm at Klock Werks.

If you are traveling in from anywhere East and are on Interstate 90 take a right exit 332 and come on down to the shop. We are located at 915 S. Kimball St. in Mitchell, SD.

The staff will kick-it with a Taco Bar starting at 6 pm with water and soda. Feel free to bring your favorite beverage and join us for the annual celebration.

It’s all free and our way of saying Thank You for a great year and welcome to South Dakota. Industry leaders, magazine editors and celebrities will all be part of the mix on Thursday night. Past attendees include James Simonelli from Baker Drivetrain, Chris Callen with Cycle Source Magazine, the team from S&S, Gary Gray with Indian/Victory, Skeeter Todd and Rick Petko from Orange County Choppers and Doc Robinson with Australia’s leading motorcycle magazine Heavy Duty, to name a few.

Stop on by and say hello. Looking forward to seeing you all on the first.

DETROIT IN BANKRUPTCY–Oh, the Detroit bankruptcy… been in the news for a few days now. One federal judge ordered them to cancel it, saying it was unconstitutional. It’s a very small city (why they say 4th largest is a crock unless you count the 78,000 abandoned buildings from the ‘67 riots that still dot the city streets).

It’s a messy deal. The former Mayor, Kwame Kilpatrick, was a real piece of work, screwed the city big time with all his buddies. A 32-year-old running the city? He’s in prison now, after being busted, charged with dozens of different things, cost the city billions.

Bunch of family, friends and lovers got busted too, strippers and murder at the mayor mansion, crazy shit went down for years, cover ups, embezzlement, racketeering, laundering money, overpaid city contractors (his buddies), movie of the week stuff.

No doubt his shenanigans contributed heavily to that mess… it was horrible dealing with him, for everyone. No way Obama will bail Detroit out… automakers will have to do something internally especially since they’re starting to do well again.

Last night, heard Detroit now has the dubious honor of once again being the murder capital of the US. Oh joy… soooo happy I’m out of there and back in Los Angeles.

Passion and purpose are the best drugs on the planet!

By working together, parents and grandparents, health care providers, community leaders and educators can truly make a difference. Here are 7 things you can do to help:

1. Take The Pledge. (See the orange box on the right.)

2. Safeguard Your Medicine. Keep prescription medicine in a secure place, count and monitor the number of pills you have and lock up your medicine.

3. Dispose Properly of Your Unused Medicine. Learn how to safely dispose of medicine at home — and find a medicine take-back site near you.

4. Educate Yourself. Find helpful resources for Parents & Grandparents, Health Care Providers, Communities & Law Enforcement officials and Educators.

5. Share What You Know. If you’re a parent, share information with family, friends and neighbors. If you’re a doctor or other health care provider, share educational materials with your patients. If you’re a community leader or law enforcement official, share information with the people in your community. If you’re a teacher, school nurse or administrator, share information with the parents and students in your school.

6. If You Are a Parent: Talk to your kids about the risks of abusing prescription drugs and over-the-counter cough medicine. Children who learn a lot about the risks of drugs from their parents are up to 50 percent less likely to use drugs than those who do not get that critical message at home.

7. Get Help. If you think your child has a problem with prescription drugs or over-the counter cough medicine, please visit Time To Get Help or call our Parents Toll-Free Helpline to speak to a parent specialist at 1-855-DRUGFREE (1-855-378-4373).

THE BAD COP REFERENDUM–
I want to be clear that I Do Not Have Anything Against Most Members of Law Enforcement or the Legislature. As a matter of fact I have many friends and associates in both.

Just as with motorcyclist and organizations that some are involved in there good and bad in both.
I send in Bad Cop and Bad Whatever because so much of the Non Motorcycle Media is bias in their reporting.

You wrote; that you run the bad cops news because of the historic battles between bikers and cops and that is one of the reasons I continue to send it in.

I think I will go along with your statement Out of most vocations I’ll bet more cops ride more than in any other job title because it appears that way to me as well.

I do ride with members of law enforcement, legislature, clubs and one percenters and have made many friends in doing so.

In the world of motorcycling we have seen things like “You meet the nicest people on a Honda” and groups doing whatever to convince the world we are really nice people. Well most are.

Now if members of law enforcement are tired of hearing about the Bad Cops in their ranks maybe they need to start doing something about it. Yes I know all about the Thin Blue Line and it being something that a lot of cops do not want to cross and take action against a fellow officer who is violating the law and or doing other things he should not. And yes the threat from Bad Cops that a Good Cop may have back up responding slowly or not at all if they do not go along with the Bad Cops.

To members of Law Enforcement that ride motorcycles you can be the ones that make changes starting from within your ranks. You took an oath when you took the job and any who are not enforcing it equally to all I suggest have succumbed to Gang Mentality.

But Then Again Many Already Consider Law Enforcement and the Government the BIGGEST GANG IN THE COUNTRY!!!!

Help Change That Thinking!!!

THE EXODUS, BY SUPRINE: A recumbent motorcycle powered by BMW

–By Loz Blain

The Exodus recumbent motorcycle, by US company Suprine, is a 130-horsepower lay-back motorbike with a roll cage and a perspex windscreen. It’s a radical design with a street-legal prototype already in action, and its remarkable form factor allows it to make a fantastic 80-plus miles per gallon on the highway, while looking like something out of a Japanese anime movie.

I think we’ll file this under “nice execution of an odd idea.” We see a lot of strange motorcycle concepts here at Gizmag, many of which never make it past the CGI stage. This is often for good reason.

Motorcycles don’t appear to be evolving particularly quickly at this point, so it’s tempting to propose wild new designs, but at the end of the day the standard motorbike as we know it seems to still have an edge over competing ideas when it comes to real-world use and practicality.

One design that has made it through to a working prototype stage is this one, the Suprine Exodus. Built in Baltimore in the United States, the Exodus is a naked, recumbent motorcycle with a large windshield and a tubular steel spaceframe with a protective roll-cage.

Built around a 1200-cc four-cylinder BMW engine, presumably out of the K1200LT tourer, the Exodus also incorporates the BMW’s shaft drive and paralever rear suspension. Front suspension is a pair of raked-out telescopic forks and the gearbox is a five-speed with reverse – which I can imagine would come in very handy.

The cockpit features an aluminum racing bucket seat that puts the rider’s backside just 7 inches off the ground. Initially, the Exodus is conceived as a bare-bones, naked celebration of engineering, but you can easily envisage it becoming an enclosed riding cabin in future releases.

The rider’s feet are free to touch the ground and hold the bike upright at the lights, although the seating position looks like it’d make this a bit of a challenge. When it’s moving, you pop your feet up onto a set of cruiser-style forward controls and off you go. Parking the bike requires an electrically operated centrestand (there’s no side stand) so you’ve clearly got to pick a good flat spot.

Benefits of the recumbent motorcycle design

The Exodus has been built to achieve rider comfort, aerodynamic efficiency, high gas mileage, enhanced rider safety and a low centre of mass. Probably its most impressive achievement is its claimed 80mpg (less than 3 litres per 100km) gas mileage – that’s roughly twice the bang for buck I get out of my 2002 FZS1000, even when I’m being good.

The gas mileage is mainly a function of aerodynamics – with the rider sitting low in the frame and behind a smooth clear windshield, the Exodus has roughly 50% less frontal area than a regular motorbike, and its bullet-shaped profile no doubt helps it slip through the air even easier.
Drawbacks of the recumbent motorcycle design
While the aerodynamics look really handy for extended freeway riding, drag racing and land speed record runs, to me the Exodus looks wildly impractical for day to day use.

For starters, the wheelbase looks to be well over 2 m (6.6 ft) long. Combined with the extreme rake of the forks, I’d expect the Exodus to execute a u-turn in roughly the same distance as a nuclear icebreaker. It’s also big and heavy, weighing in at 680 lb (308 kg). Granted, it’s lighter than the 761-lb K1200LT donor bike, but then, in your recumbent position, you really only have your calf muscles to hold it up with.

Then there’s the safety element. It’s open to debate whether a rider is safer crashing in an enclosed metal frame or separating from the vehicle and doing the old Superman impersonation in a collision. But in terms of passive safety, one of the motorcyclist’s key advantages is sitting higher than most car drivers, allowing you to see over the cars in front of you and read traffic two or three cars forward in the line. The Exodus puts you at tailpipe level even if you’re following a compact sedan. With less information to work with, you’ll need to leave a significantly bigger gap in front of you to maintain the same level of safety.

THE OFFICIAL THROTTLE BODY USED ON THE RAY WHEELER’S 5-BALL RAYCER FROM HORSEPOWER INC.–
Horsepower Inc. (HPI) specializes in the manufacturing of aftermarket throttle bodies and related products engineered to provide you more power and performance to complete your EFI build.

We design and manufacture a wide variety of products that include throttle bodies, intakes, air cleaners, injectors, push rods, and more.

We have been injecting horsepower in the v-twin industry for the past 10 years. Our beginning dates back to the summer of 2002 when members of our crew were utilizing our facility after hours to improve the performance of their fuel injected bikes.

We knew then there was a need for performance products in the EFI market.
Our mission is to offer you upgrades to replace your stock components for increased horsepower and torque.

“We pride our company in American made products. All of our manufacturing is done in-house, in the United States on state-of-the-art CNC machining equipment from United States material and United States labor.”

Our units provide a crisp throttle response and are flow bench tested for unparalleled dyno-proven performance to increase airflow and to allow for substantial increases in horsepower and torque.
Each HPI big bore throttle body is fully machined and ported and polished internally for unmatched flow compared to other throttle body manufacturers.

All of our throttle bodies feature a split shaft design for reliability and maximum flow. Each throttle body is equipped with a sealed double roller bearing for a smooth throttle operation and response. Increased strength of brass throttle blade and shaft resist deflection, helping to maintain throttle position accuracy, which absorbs vibration and engine harmonics. All this leads to a product that is easier to tune, and produces a better running bike.

ACCIDENT SCENE MANAGEMENT PRE 110TH PARTY–We are having an industry party at the Compound on Thursday, August 29th, from 10am til 2-3pm. It’s free and we hope to have an old skool bike show there too, with Editor’s choice award.

Milwaukee Mike is representing Cycle Source because Chris is in Chillicothe but he sends his regards. Marilyn Stemp will be there for Iron Works and Rogue is there for several different publications.

Charlie Brechtel is going to perform while the band Riff Raff takes a break, and Mary Lou Funk will have here Brew City Babes and their special edition calendar there. Erik Buell wants to come but might not be able to make the early times. He said he could do it if it were later in the day, but Thursday afternoon at around 5pm, the HD events start to pick up and we didn’t want to compete with that.

Free food for our VIP guests at the Industry Party and we’ll have special VIP ID cards for them to wear.

Also, let people know we’re providing a drop off for trailers at $20 a trailer for the entire 110th week. We have limited space so first come, first serve. Most hotels downtown don’t have trailer space on site, and they’re charging $25 per day for offsite, so we have a good deal.

CRAFTSMAN MAKE-A-DIFFERENCE TRUCK HEADING TO THE BADLANDS–
I wanted to touch base to let you know about a philanthropic endeavor happening the week before the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. After 10,000 miles traveled across the U.S., the Craftsman “Make A Difference” Tour and its 36-foot trailer filled with the brand’s newest and most innovative tools will be motoring into town to make much needed repairs to the Sturgis Veterans’ Club. The three-day rebuild begins on Monday, July 29th and commences on Wednesday, July 31st. Are you planning to attend the Sturgis rally? If you are in town prior to it, we would love for you to stop by on the reveal day (7/31) to check out the center and even pitch in, if interested. We will be there on-site, and happy to facilitate.

After the renovation is complete, the Craftsman “Make A Difference” Tour truck will participate in the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally from August 3-10 alongside Harley-Davidson at their Lazelle and 3rd Street event site to showcase the latest tool innovations, including the new “Dark Custom” Craftsman/Harley tool storage units that will be on display for the very first time (this information is under embargo until 7/25).

DOGS TRAINED FOR VETERANS–On June 15th, Aaron’s furniture store held its “First Annual Bike and Car Show at the Y”. The show was held in the Aaron’s parking lot at 9312 N. Division St. in Spokane. This benefit was organized to raise much needed funds and dog food for Operation Dog Tag which trains dogs for veterans that are returning from combat and are dealing with PTSD and physical disabilities.

Rick Fabel and the rest of the crew at Aaron’s at the “Y” with the help of local volunteers raised over $450 in cash donations and 800 lbs. of dog food were raised to help out this incredibly worthy cause.

Program director Joe Scheffer was pleasantly surprised when he needed to return with a pickup truck to pick up the dog food! Fabel called Veteran’s, one of this country’s “unsung heroes” and was only too happy to put this show together.

The organizers of the event would like to thank everyone who participated and volunteered. The biggest thanks goes out to those of you that stopped and donated. Thanks to all of you, the event was a great success.

Anyone interested in donating to Operation Dog Tag can contact Joe Scheffer at 509-276-4364 or 509-995-4517.

The 4th annual “Run What Ya Brung” Street Drags and Veteran’s Benefit took place in Oldtown, Idaho on July 6th–What started out as a grand opening party for Killing Machine Choppers four years ago has evolved into one of the areas largest events. Thousands of people filled the tiny town of Oldtown to watch brave souls “Run What They Brung”. A good Old School Street Drag Race.

Algie Pirrello (Retired owner of Killing Machine Choppers) had a vision: motorcycle street drags. He thought that, not only would it be fun but, it would be a great opportunity to raise some money for local veteran’s organizations.

This year’s beneficiary was the Spokane Veteran’s Forum, a volunteer group of veterans and Gold Star Mothers who serve as Mentors to men and women coming through the Spokane Veterans Court.

After expenses, the event raised over $1300 for this worthy charity. This does not include the donations that came in before the event!

Algie would like to thank all of the sponsors, volunteers, vendors, racers and spectators for making the event a success. He would also like to send special thanks to the City of Oldtown (especially Lonnie and Sheila), Rick Fabel from Aarons, Jamie Zachary, the Club Rio, Breeze Pirrello, Justin Sprague, and the ladies at the Priest River Times. Without all of you this event would not have been possible.

BIKERNET CRIMINAL ATTORNEY WINS CASE IN FLORIDA–
Twists and turns in federal honey case lead to judge’s rebuke of prosecution, dismissal of charges

Read more at Jacksonville.com:

–By Jim Schoettler

Qiao Chu sat in a federal detention center for 18 months, missing the birth of his first child and death of his grandfather, primarily based on the work of government chemist Sharon Stricklin.

Chin Shih Chou’s wife and two children suffered as he was locked up for the same period. Wei-Tang Lo’s family also missed him, though he got out in a year.

The three men were charged in 2011 with smuggling Chinese-origin honey into Jacksonville and other ports without paying $1.1 million in tariffs that would have been required for contents of more than 50 percent honey. The arrests were the latest efforts by the federal authorities to protect domestic honey producers from a surge into the country of cheaper foreign product.

A year later, a federal judge cut Stricklin as an expert witness after finding her analysis that the barrels were predominantly filled with honey had no scientific basis. The U.S. Attorney’s Office dropped the charges in May after an independent lab ruled the barrels contained syrup, as the men originally claimed, with little to no honey at all.
Stricklin wouldn’t discuss her work when reached this month by the Times-Union at her government lab in Savannah.

“I’m under kind of a hush order,” she whispered over her office phone.

But a powerful figure who had plenty to say was U.S. District Judge Marcia Howard.

Howard’s frustration with the case can be heard after prosecutors announced plans to drop the charges in May. Six months earlier, she’d struck Stricklin as an expert witness after finding that the lab tests that found the product full of honey had no scientific basis.

Prosecutors told Howard in early May they intended to dismiss the indictment. During three days of hearings, she called the case an embarrassment. She also described it as the worst miscarriage of justice she’d witnessed in 10 years as a judge.

“It’s the American justice system being everything it is not supposed to be,” she said.
Howard said the men deserved an apology from lead prosecutor Russell Stoddard for their loss of liberty. When Stoddard refused, Howard apologized instead.

She then watched them walk free on May 8 from her Jacksonville courtroom.

Rob Scroggie, a member of the Bikernet legal team, represented Quiao Chu and may be countersuing the prosecutors in the very near future.

BAD JOKE LIBRARY NOW OPEN– Just grant me the senility to forget the people I never liked, the good fortune to remember the ones I do, and the eyesight to tell the difference.

Now that I’m older here’s what I’ve discovered:

I started out with nothing, and I still have most of it.

I finally got my head together, and now my body is falling apart.

Funny, I don’t remember being absent-minded.

If all is not lost, then where is it?

It was a whole lot easier to get older, than to get wiser.

I wish the buck really did stop here; I sure could use a few of them.

When I’m finally holding all the right cards, everyone wants to play chess.

It’s not hard to meet expenses . . . they’re everywhere.

Funny, I don’t remember being absent-minded.

THIS JUST IN FROM THE BIKERNET PHILOSOPHER–Today My Path is Clear, I have a personal GPS

Do not go where the path may lead you, go instead where there is no path and leave a trail. –Emerson

Just as light dissipates darkness, Spirits Light dissipates all darkness in My Life. I am certain that my path is made clear. I release the shackles of my past knowing that it is the past and the only power the past has is what I hold in my mind.

I cleanse my mind of all discord and uncertainty trusting in the Power of Spirit to guide me through all obstructions and challenges. I know longer need to repeat the lessons of Life for I now have learned from them.

Through meditation and good thinking I carve out My path letting go of old dysfunctional maps and create my very own path.

BIKERS ROUSTED AT NOTHERN ARIZONA RALLY–Members of a motorcycle club claim their constitutional rights were violated when Arizona officers rousted them at gunpoint at a campsite where a man shot his wife and two others before killing himself.

The Sons of Hell filed a federal lawsuit last week against the Arizona Department of Public Safety and the Coconino County Sheriff’s Office. Its members claim officers were trying to collect information for a criminal street gang database, even though they knew club members weren’t involved in the 2011 shooting at a bike rally near Flagstaff.

A DPS spokesman declined comment Tuesday. The sheriff’s office didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.

A similar lawsuit the club filed last year was dismissed without prejudice after its attorney abandoned the case.

The club has new legal representation and is seeking monetary compensation.

HARLEY-DAVIDSON SURVIVES SECOND QUARTER– Harley-Davidson has reported second-quarter 2013 diluted earnings per share increased 13.1% on higher motorcycle shipments and continued gains in operating efficiencies, compared to the year-ago period.

Second-quarter net income was $271.7 million on consolidated revenue of $1.79 billion, compared to net income of $247.3 million on consolidated revenue of $1.73 billion in the year-ago period. Second-quarter 2013 diluted earnings per share were $1.21, compared to $1.07 in the year-ago quarter.

Through six months, Harley-Davidson net income was $495.9 million on consolidated revenue of $3.37 billion, compared to net income of $419.3 million on consolidated revenue of $3.16 billion in the year-ago period. Six-month 2013 diluted earnings per share were $2.20, compared to $1.81 in the year-ago period.

“Harley-Davidson again drove strong financial performance in the second quarter, reflecting the many improvements in operations we have made throughout the Company over the past few years as well as our brand strength globally,” said Keith Wandell, Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer. “Our employees, dealers and suppliers continue to do an outstanding job, working as one team and moving in one direction, to deliver a great experience for our customers,” Wandell said.

“During the second quarter, we completed our first year of seasonal surge production at York with great success. We also surpassed a milestone for international dealership growth. With the opening of a dealership in Salvador, Brazil on June 29th, we have added 104 dealerships outside the U.S. since late 2009, achieving our goal to add 100 to 150 international dealerships by the end of 2014,” Wandell said.

“Of course, all summer long we are celebrating our 110th anniversary with Harley-Davidson enthusiasts from around the world, including one of our biggest-ever international consumer events last month in Rome and the upcoming celebration in Milwaukee on Labor Day weekend. And less than a month from now, we will launch an exciting line-up of new 2014 motorcycles.” Wandell said.

Retail Harley-Davidson Motorcycle Sales

Dealers worldwide sold 90,193 new Harley-Davidson motorcycles in the second quarter of 2013, compared to 85,714 motorcycles in the year-ago quarter. In the U.S., dealers sold 58,241 new Harley-Davidson motorcycles in the quarter, up 4.4% compared to the year-ago period. In international markets, dealers sold 31,952 new Harley-Davidson motorcycles during the second quarter, compared to 29,953 motorcycles in the year-ago period, with unit sales up 12.3% in the Asia Pacific region, 1.0% in the EMEA region, 39.2% in the Latin America region, and 3.6% in Canada.

Through six months, dealers sold 144,447 new Harley-Davidson motorcycles worldwide, compared to 145,391 motorcycles in the year-ago period, with retail unit sales up 11.9% in the Asia Pacific region, 22.8% in the Latin America region and 2.4% in Canada, and down 2.7% in the U.S. and 3.6% in the EMEA region, compared to the first half of 2012. The Company believes first-half U.S. retail sales were adversely impacted by a prolonged and abnormally cool and wet spring in 2013, compared to an abnormally early and warm spring in 2012.

COP FIRED FOR SPEAKING OUT AGAINST ARREST AND TICKET QUOTAS–Auburn, Alabama is home to sprawling plains, Auburn University, and a troubling police force.

After the arrival of a new police chief in 2010, the department entered an era of ticket quotas and worse. “When I first heard about the quotas I was appalled,” says former Auburn police officer Justin Hanners, who claims he and other cops were given directives to hassle, ticket, or arrest specific numbers of residents per shift.

“I got into law enforcement to serve and protect, not be a bully.”Hanners blew the whistle on the department’s tactics and was eventually fired for refusing to comply and keep quiet. He says that each officer was required to make 100 contacts each month, which included tickets, arrests, field interviews, and warnings.

This equates to 72,000 contacts a year in a 50,000 person town. His claims are backed up by audio recordings of his superiors he made. The Auburn police department declined requests to be interviewed for this story.

“There are not that many speeders, there are not that many people running red lights to get those numbers, so what [the police] do is they lower their standards,” says Hanners. That led to the department encouraging officers to arrest people that Hanners “didn’t feel like had broken the law.”

Former Reason staffer Radley Balko, now an investigative reporter for the Huffington Post and author of the new book, Rise of the Warrior Cop, says that this isn’t just a nuisance, it infringes on public safety. “You have a policy that encourages police to create petty crimes and ignore serious crimes, and that’s clearly the opposite of what we want our police to be doing,” says Balko.

Hanners repeatedly voiced his concerns through his chain of command, and the department responded that these requirements are necessary for increasing productivity. Yet Hanners firmly believes that the quotas are entirely revenue driven. “I had no intention of dropping it,” says Hanners, “This is a problem in more places than Auburn, and I think once the people know that they can hold their public officials accountable, it’ll change.” The police chief singled out by Hanners retired this July, citing medical reasons.

BIKERNET MEDICAL CENTER PERFECT FINDING BEFORE STURGIS RUN–Does Drinking Interfere with Antibiotics?– You may have heard the widespread myth that you shouldn’t drink alcohol while taking antibiotics. While drinking probably won’t lessen the effects of most antibacterial drugs, alcohol can lower your general energy and may delay your recovery – so it is best to minimize drinking until you’ve finished any prescribed course of antibiotic treatment.

If you are taking antibiotics, you should also consider the following:

•Antibiotics not only kill harmful bacteria that are making you sick, they also destroy the beneficial flora in your gut and can promote the development of resistant organisms in your body. To restore the helpful organisms, take supplemental probiotics – dried or liquid cultures of live bacteria that aid digestion and maintain intestinal health. Look for products that contain Bacillus coagulans (BC-30) or Lactobacillus GG.

•Work with your doctor to reserve antibiotic use for situations that really require them, such as bacterial infections in vital organs or fast-moving infections that the immune system can’t contain.

UNCLE MONKEY RIDES A KAWI–I have to admit the riding the Kawi is taking some getting use to. Don’t get me wrong the basic principles of riding a motorcycle are pretty universal the Kawi just has some quirks to get use too.

The Kawi runs well enough but it desperately needs the carbs set; all four of them sequenced to work together as a single unit. I’ve never had to deal with that many carbs working as a team so there will be a bit of a learning curve.

The hold up is the Kawi is an interim bike until Snow White gets back and while Snow White is away I’m renovating my garage. All my tools are in storage and my garage floor is dirt and hundred year old decayed wood. But the Kawi runs well enough to leave it alone for now. It means I have to constantly adjust the choke to keep the mixture right, a mixture that fluctuates as the bike warms, as it cools in fast moving traffic, “overheats” in stop and go. A nudge this way, a nudge that way.

Sometimes giving a little extra throttle slowing for a traffic light. All this is on top of “learning” to use the manual signal lights that have to be held on. It gives me a greater appreciation for the riders of old vintage bikes. Old bikes placed great demands on the riders that they made seem effortless. Foot clutches and tank shifters are only the tip of the iceberg, Some old bikes required you to give a couple pumps to oil the motor while you rode, gas powered headlights and the list goes on.

Throw in bad roads, lack of traffic signs, and lack of rules of the road and those riders are the original multitaskers and they did it with style and grace. Though almost 30 years old the Kawi is a long way from being a true vintage but it is giving me a glimpse into the past.

BEST CASE SCENARIO OF THE WEEK–Judge orders more than $1M to be returned to exotic dancer

–By Sophia Rosenbaum, NBC News

A federal judge in Nebraska ordered the government to return more than $1 million to a California exotic dancer who says she saved the money one dance at a time.

The ruling came in an opinion last week after federal authorities claimed at trial the money — $1,074,900 — was the product of illegal drug sales.
On March 3, 2012, Nebraska State Patrol Trooper Ryan Hayes pulled over a couple – Rajesh Dheri and his wife, Marina – on Interstate 80 near North Platte for driving 93 mph in a 75-mph zone.

Hayes questioned the couple as to where they were going. Dheri explained they had rented the Mercedes SUV in Los Angeles and were driving back home to New Jersey with various stops to visit friends and family.

Before he let the couple go, Hayes asked them if they had anything illegal in the car. The couple said no and agreed to let him search it. He found a duffel bag lined with dryer sheets and stuffed with rubber-banded bundles of $100 bills totaling $1,074,90, according to court documents.

Hayes detained the couple and brought them to Nebraska State Patrol where a drug dog indicated the “odor of controlled substances emanating from the currency,” the official complaint said.

The Dehris said they were taking the money to New Jersey for their friends for a business deal involving a nightclub.

The U.S. Attorney’s office argued that both the amount of money and the way it was stored was indicative of drug trafficking.

Tara Mishra, the Dheri’s friend, testified last month at a bench trial in Omaha that she earned the money as an exotic dancer and had given it to the couple to invest.

In his ruling, Judge Joseph F. Bataillon said the canine alert held little weight in the case because the government offered no statistical support to back it up.

“For all the court knows, there is a 90 percent chance that all money is drug tainted,” the judge said, but the government “left too many unanswered questions and had a general failure of proof in this case.”

The money, plus interest, was ordered to be returned to Mishra.

There are many different concerns that affect each individual business. First on the agenda will be the battle to keep other Countries from infringing on United States patent and making knock off parts. This is a fight that we all have to win. We will need plenty of support from all of the parts designers and patent owners that have been taken advantage of over the years to build a strong case.

We will also put a call out to all of the bike builders who are having title and registration issues. There are many insurance company policy problems that affect the values of motorcycles and the ability to even insure custom built bikes. We want to put a realistic value on the old iron.

The idea that we can make a difference if we all have a common goal is the driving force behind this committee. If you like what you hear so far, please contact us and join. We really need your support and feedback to make this work. We will be announcing the mission statement several times at the Broken Spoke Sturgis County Line before all of the Headliner concerts during the upcoming Bike Rally.

Thanks for your support.

N.H.R.A. Pro Stock Motorcycle Racer Steve Johnson Visits PSI–

Recently National Hot Rod Association Pro Stock Motorcycle racer and team owner Steve Johnson visited the students at PSI.

Steve Johnson brought his rig and pro stock motorcycle to PSI to talk to students and instructors regarding employment opportunities, and how students should start preparing themselves for the job market.

Steve was at PSI for 5 hours presenting and talking with students. It was a great day, “Steve is such a great speaker, during his presentation the students and the staff gained a great deal of knowledge, and had a lot of fun with Steve and his team technicians.” Said Bernie Thompson, PSI Campus Director.

“The best part for me was the race event in Norwalk, Ohio. We invited students up to see the races and one lucky PSI student got to experience what is like to be in the pits and on the starting line when Steve launched the bike and completed the run in 6.94 seconds at 193.16 miles per hour. Seeing the dedication and commitment on the teams faces to do well, was very inspiring and exciting to be part of the event.” adds Bernie Thompson.

The PowerSport Institute sponsored Steve for the one time event in Norwalk. Be on the lookout for additional pictures and video on:

MOTORCYCLIST USES GUN TO WARD OFF ROBBERS—

By Taylor Colwell

A motorcyclist in Colorado defended himself against highway robbery Wednesday by carrying a handgun. After pulling over to change clothes, the rider was accosted by three men in a car with knives. The motorcyclist punched the knife-wielding man then pulled his gun, causing the men to run away.

Here’s the story:
They say never to bring a knife to a gunfight.
Such was the case Wednesday night in unincorporated El Paso County.
Three men who reportedly tried to rob a motorcyclist at knifepoint got a big surprise when the motorcyclist hit one of the men and then pulled out a gun.

The motorcyclist had pulled over in the 3800 block of Marksheffel Road about 6:25 p.m. to add another layer of clothing, sheriff’s spokesman Lt. Jeff Kramer said.

Three men who appeared between 19 and 20 years old pulled up behind him in a black Honda Accord . Two of the men got out of the car and demanded the motorcyclist’s money. One of the men was armed with a knife, Kramer said.

The motorcyclist didn’t comply with their demands.
Instead, he punched the knife-wielding man and then pulled out a handgun, which he was lawfully carrying, Kramer said.

The suspects ran back to the car and sped away, Kramer said. No arrests have been made, and the investigation is ongoing, he said.

VETERAN’S Hero Story–
Spc. Austin H. joined the army shortly after his 18th birthday. Trained as a combat medic, he was assigned to the third brigade combat team, 82nd Airborne Division. As a trauma team leader, he provided medical care to his fellow wounded soldiers.

After returning home, Austin struggled with memories of the terror he had witnessed. His PTSD however, did not emerge until a car accident 2 years later brought all of his buried pain to the surface. Austin’s family says he “hit rock bottom, and just ‘lost it’ “. Unemployment, addiction, and a “severe disconnect with interpersonal relationships” followed.

Austin’s father Eric contacted Healing Heroes Network, hoping to “improve his life and get the help he needed”. Dr. Samuel Smithyman, (Healing Heroes Network Provider and Air Force Veteran), began seeing Austin for counseling sessions, and Austin began to take his first steps toward healing within weeks.

His sister Sara states, “Healing Heroes Network was immediately responsive and supportive. My brother began seeing Dr. Smithyman , and has really been able to turn things around.”

Seconds his father Eric, “Healing Heroes Network’s role in this incredible change is significant. I fear that Austin may have slipped past the point of help if they had not stepped in and assisted!”

Because of the generous donations and ticket entries received through Harleys For Heroes, Healing Heroes Network has been able to provide financial assistance for many heroes just like Austin, to receive the treatment that they need to turn their lives around and begin on their road to recovery.

COP CLUBS ON THE RISE–Moctezuma’s Bar in Prescott, Ariz., where a brawl took place last December involving members of the Iron Brotherhood Motorcycle Club.
And their day jobs were police chief, county sheriff’s sergeant, police officer and paramedic.

An increasing number of police officers are forming motorcycle clubs, and hundreds now exist nationwide, according to experts on motorcycle gangs. Gang investigators fear that such clubs, some of which have the trappings of outlaw biker groups, can hurt the credibility of law enforcement and undermine criminal cases brought against traditional gangs.

“In the last 15 years I would say that we’ve probably seen a tenfold increase in these clubs,” said Terry Katz, vice president of the International Outlaw Motorcycle Gang Investigators Association, who works for the Maryland State Police. “The first ones were pretty straightforward—they were family-oriented clubs. What we see now as a trend is biker by night and cop by day.”

The growth of such groups worries some law-enforcement officials because of the rowdy and violent behavior that sometimes goes on. In South Dakota, for instance, prosecutors charged a Seattle police detective who was a member of a group called the Iron Pigs with shooting and injuring a Hells Angels biker in a 2008 brawl between the clubs. The charges were later dropped.

This year, the police chief in Melrose Park, Ill., a Chicago suburb, disbanded a police motorcycle club called the Reapers whose members had allegedly been in a bar fight.

“If this is not addressed, you’re going to continue to have these issues like you have in Arizona,” said David “Vito” Bertocchini, a retired detective who investigated motorcycle gangs in California. “If these guys were dressing as street-gang members and they had red rags hanging out their pockets, would this be tolerated? Absolutely not.”

In the courts, defense attorneys seek to torpedo charges against alleged gang members by arguing they are no different than police motorcycle clubs. Jorge Gil-Blanco, a retired San Jose police officer and expert witness, said the issue “muddies the water for juries.” He adds, “I shouldn’t have to sit there and justify this type of behavior.”

Members of police clubs say the concern is overblown. The Blue Knights, a law-enforcement club with more than 20,000 members around the world, was formed to raise money for charities and ride bikes with fellow officers and families, said D.J. Alvarez, international vice president. “We try to maintain a positive appearance,” he said. “We promote motorcycle safety, we involve families and we’re not discriminative,” he added.

The national board of directors for the Iron Brotherhood didn’t respond to requests for comment, but on its website appeared to distance itself from the Arizona bar fight, denouncing “any behavior by its members that would reflect negatively on our club or our profession as law-enforcement officers.” The board said what was known as the Whiskey Row Chapter in Prescott no longer exists.

The fight broke out Dec. 22 last year at Moctezuma’s Bar in Prescott, where members of the Iron Brotherhood had gathered for their Christmas party. A patron approached Bill “Tarzan” Fessler, president of the Iron Brotherhood chapter and the police chief of neighboring Prescott Valley, and either grabbed his vest or asked about the club’s patch, according to witness accounts in a report released by the Arizona Department of Public Safety.

A melee ensued and a security guard observed an Iron Brotherhood member “pounding” someone’s face, the report said. Investigators concluded that the man, who was treated for a possible broken nose, and another patron were hit.

State investigators recommended assault charges against two Iron Brotherhood members, obstruction-of-justice charges against Mr. Fessler and another member of the club, and disorderly conduct charges against the patron. A spokesman for the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office said prosecutors were reviewing the recommendations, but have yet to decide on filing criminal charges.

ONLY IN CALIFORNIA–Fake Signs On Bay Area Highways Say Drones Looking For Speeders

MARIN COUNTY (KPIX 5) — Several signs have cropped up on Bay Area highways, telling drivers that drones are enforcing speed limits. The California Highway Patrol told KPIX 5 the signs are fakes and that they do not have drones.

“As people are driving by and they see something like this, it’s definitely a distraction,” said Officer Andrew Barclay of the California Highway Patrol.
“The first officer who saw this on Highway 37 was out patrolling his beat…did a double take, flipped around, came back, and confirmed it was what he saw.”

The metal signs say, “Speed enforced by drones.” They also show a drone firing a weapon.

Barclay said the signs violate Section 21465 of the California Vehicle Code, which prohibits imitation signs from being posted on highways.

According to Barclay, whoever made the signs knew what they were doing. “Professional materials, it is a black & white reflective sign, just like the signs that we use on the side of the road for speed limits, and everything else,” he said.

“One of the signs that we found on Highway 37 was actually mounted using tamper-resistant bolts,” Barclay said. “The other two signs were strapped using metal strapping on poles on the side of the freeway.”

Barclay said the agency does not have the unmanned aircraft.

“At CHP we definitely do not have drones. We use radar, lidar, pace, we have planes and we have helicopters, but we do not have drones,” he said. “Along with not having drones we definitely do not have any drones that would fire any type of weaponry.”

KPIX 5 learned several more signs have popped up on Bay Area roadways on Thursday. The Highway Patrol is investigating and checking in with sign makers to see if they filled the unique order.

NEXT DOOR TO THE BIKER BARFLY RANCH–A successful rancher died and left everything to his devoted wife. She was a very good-looking woman and determined to keep the ranch, but knew very little about ranching, so she decided to place an ad in the newspaper for a ranch hand…

Two cowboys applied for the job. One was gay and the other a drunk.

She thought long and hard about it, and when no one else applied she decided to hire the gay guy, figuring it would be safer to have him around the house than the drunk.

He proved to be a hard worker who put in long hours every day and knew a lot about ranching..

For weeks, the two of them worked, and the ranch was doing very well.

Then one day, the rancher’s widow said to the hired hand,”You have done a really good job, and the ranch looks great. You should go into town and kick up your heels.” The hired hand readily agreed and went into town one Saturday night

One o’clock came, however, and he didn’t return.

Two o’clock and no hired hand.

Finally he returned a round two-thirty, and upon entering the room, he found the rancher’s widow sitting by the fireplace with a glass of wine,
waiting for him.

She quietly called him over to her..

“Unbutton my blouse and take it off,” she said.

Trembling, he did as she directed. “Now take off my boots.”

He did as she asked, ever so slowly.. “Now take off my socks.”

He removed each gently and placed them neatly by her boots.

“Now take off my skirt.”

He slowly unbuttoned it, constantly watching her eyes in the fire light.

“Now take off my bra..” Again, with trembling hands, he did as he was told and dropped it to the floor.

Then she looked at him and said,
“If you ever wear my clothes into town again, you’re fired.”

(P.S. – I didn’t see it coming, either)

JUST THE BEGINNING—Of a fiery batch of weeks ahead. Brothers and sisters are packing to ride to the Badlands. The Chip and the Spoke are gearing up for the onslaught. Bub’s Bonneville follows in just a couple of weeks, then the 110th hits Wisconsin like the brass band from hell.

Holy shit, and the summer is in full-blown nitro-charged swing. Can we keep up? Can we tune or repair all the projects in the shop? Can I find a redhead born in the year of the Monkey or Dragon? Which whiskey should I drink next?

Tomorrow we will spring a major 106-inch Twin Cam tech on you from Bennett’s Performance.

Peter Linney will be all over me tomorrow about a bike feature he’s been trying to sell me for months. The word around the industry is that some magazines are hurting and cutting their freelance talents, including writers and photographers. Many writers are paid less than when I started in this industry in the ‘70s. It’s sad, and we try to do anything we can to support freelancers. It’s a tough road.

Speaking of tough ways to go. There are perhaps tens of thousands of screenplays collecting dust, and I’m going to give it a shot. I have a notion for a motorcycle movie based during the board track era. I just bought a book about writing screenplays and a software program called Final Draft.

Next week some time, I will clean up the treatment and send it to the Writer’s Guild, and then I will publish it on Bikernet, so you can coach me while I attempt to write the screenplay. Should be interesting.

Some Paughco parts arrived today for our Streamlined Trike effort. As soon as I have a few more, I will cut a dusty trail for Texas to Kent Week’s shop where we will start on the frame. I’m itching for a road trip, since I’m forced to miss Sturgis.

I have a feeling that due to the piss-poor weather this last winter and the 110th folks are chompin’ at the bit to hit the road. I may make the Harley event and help Bob and Prince Najar with the AMD show at the Museum. I enjoy hanging out in Milwaukee. Like Sturgis it’s all about motorcycles. You can feel it in the air.

Ride Forever,

–Bandit
