POST-MEMORIAL DAY THURSDAY NEWS FOR MAY 30, 2013

Hey,

This is a good one, but once a week, I’m going to promote Freedom in this country, as an alternative to more regulation, by pointing out an example.

Here’s an interesting one from Ireland. The decline of the family pub has led to a rise in alcoholism. Since more and more pubs are forced to close, it forces folks to buy booze and over-drink at home. Drinking in a pub is a social event, and it comes with social constraints. Liver disease has tripled among 15-to34-year-olds.

Okay, this news could be a bear, so I’ll jump right into the breach and give it hell. Our Belly tank arrived from Class Glass arrived today. I’m in discussion with Paughco and a local hot rod frame builder about the frame.

Let’s see what happens next. Let’s hit the news:

The Thursday New is sponsored in part by IronWorks Magazine.

1. to talk or utter foolishly; blither; babble: The poor thing blathered for hours about the intricacies of his psyche.

noun:1. foolish, voluble talk: His speech was full of the most amazing blather.

She was quiet, and he started to think it had been a mistake to blather out his thoughts.

— Erin McCarthy, Heiress for Hire, 2006

Every ship is a romantic object,” Tom would blather, “except we all sail in.”

Blather comes from the Old Norse word blathra meaning “to chatter, blabber” or “nonsense.”

BIKERNET OFFICIAL CERTIFIED PHILOSOPHER SPEAKS OUT– I Choose To Have A Great Day Today

As I have said the Universal Law of cause and effect is always responding to our most dominant thoughts and conversations. Over the last week most of my energy has been channeled to all the challenges I have been facing in my business, staff, cash flow etc..

As I focused on the problems they got bigger and bigger, how surprising. What is even more alarming is I quit doing my daily writings and let my EGO (edging God out) get in the way multiplying the problem in my mind. Sometimes I fear failure but sabotage my success.

On Friday I did the best Spiritual exercise I could, I paused and took the time to go within for the guidance I needed to get rid of the stinkin’ thinkin’. I allowed myself the time to just be still and Know I am One with the Infinite Source of All Life, to Know that I can overcome any problem, any challenge.

I moved from being part of the problem to part of the solution. Isn’t it interesting how easy it is to forget our Truth, how we can get caught up in the negativity and then find so many people will agree with us on how bad it is. I am happy that I did pause on Friday, altered my thinking and I loved the results. Saturday was the best day I had in my shop in a long time.

Sunday I went on a ride with some great friends and ended up finishing the day off having a constructive meeting at the shop with my top mechanic. As I start today I am Grateful that I do have the choice of how my day is going to go.

And So It Is
Namaste’
I act without struggle
I enjoy what I am doing
I am grateful for the results

BIKER’S CHOICE SPONSORS SMOKE OUT 14–
Biker’s Choice supports the annual chopper blowout by sponsoring the Smoke Out 14 Rally. Biker’s Choice has decided to participate because the Smoke Out is a celebration of guys and gals wrenching on their own bikes.

“The term DIY is synonymous with Biker’s Choice, as they carry everything you need to maintain your bike as well as everything you need to create a chopper from the ground up,” explained Greg “Edge” Scheuer, the Smoke Out Rally Grand Poobah. “Biker’s Choice has everything that our chopper jockeys need to stay on the road.”

The Smoke Out is an annual pilgrimage to Rockingham, NC, where over 15,000 chopper and bobber riders congregate to relax, drag race, swap lies and dance to good ole rock n’ roll. The Smoke Out brings together an all-star entertainment program that is a must-see event for every chopper enthusiast. A highlight to this year’s entertainment line-up is the Monstercraftsman exhibit where enthusiasts will learn about fabricating, pin striping and welding.

“The Smoke Out Rally is aligned with our support of American ingenuity, craftsmanship and the DIY lifestyle,” said Charlie Hadayia, Director of Business Development. “We are looking to work with Edge for many years to come.”

Biker’s Choice is a wholesale distributor and does not sell direct to the public. Their dealer network has access to over 10,000 different products. The firm also is sponsoring the chopper show at the rally and providing swag to 6 lucky winners. Check the SmokeOutRally.com for updates.

S&S COAST CYCLES LATEST 5-BALL RACING APPAREL DEALER–There’s a new Shop in town.

Back at the Laughlin Run I met a cool guy named Dan Holford. After talking for a bit I learned he owned a shop called S&S Coast Cycles in Oceanside, Ca and he was interested in becoming an authorized dealer of 5-Ball Racing and Crank & Stroker Apparel.

Well, this past weekend I took the opportunity to cruise down and check out the shop…Man was I glad I did! The shop is right there on Hwy 1 and they have a lot of cool things. Aside from the service, sales, parts, powder coating, etc. They sell “take offs”, which personally is a great way to get that budget build together.

I think Dan’s tag line sums it up best ” No glitz no glamour, just fast, loud, beautiful bikes.”
Check out the Pan.

RARE HISTORIC STORY COMING TO BANDIT’S CANTINA–I am keying in (typing from printed pages) the George A. Wyman story as published in Motorcycle Magazine in 1903-04. It is still not common knowledge among any of the motorcycle historians I know. It’s a hell of a story. Here is the forward as published in the August 1979 Issue of Road Rider Magazine. George A. Wyman was the first person to cross the continental US on a self propelled vehicle. Until this story was republished in 1979 a car (four wheels had been given credit for this historical feat).

THE GEORGE A WYMAN STORY

Reprinted here with permission from Road Rider Magazine which published the story for the second time in the August Edition of Road Rider Magazine. The story was originally published in Motorcycle Magazine in way back 1903. It’s True….a rigid frame two wheeler was the very first self propelled vehicle to cross the continental US. George a Wyman rode what was a two wheel contraption believed to be manufactured by the California Motorbike Company (one cylinder) from San Francisco to New York in 1903. The story is remarkable given the fact that George did not have a cell phone or a GPS system to keep him on course.

FORWARD BY THE EDITORS OF ROAD RIDER MAGAZINE 1979

When George A Wyman left San Francisco California on the afternoon of May 16, 1903, he was on his way into the pages of history. Unfortunately, history has all but ignored him…..until now (1979). Road Rider Editor/Publisher Roger Hull first became aware of Gorge Wyman and his incredible trip while reading though a 1910 bicycle-motorcycle magazine.

There was very little information…just a reference to Wyman being the first person to cross continental America with a self propelled motor vehicle.Hulls attempts to to find more information came to naught for several years. Hull concedes he made no concentrated search. Just occasional inquiries here an there.

Nobody seemed to know anything about George A. Wyman. Eventually, at the 1978 Daytona Speed Week event, Hull was talking to American motorcycle history researcher G.W. Knudsen, and brought up the subject of Wyman’s epic journey. Knudsen had never heard of Wyman and knew nothing of the trip, but was intrigued in the extreme. Hull thereupon engaged Knudsen to research the Wyman mystery.

Mr. Knudsen invested the next 18 months researching the George A. Wyman odyssey. Without his devoted contributions…as well as those of Herb Glass who, as Knudsen discovered, had a rare cop of the original manuscript as it appeared on the pages of a 1903 Edition of Motorcycle Magazine in collection. The discovery and resulting rebirth of the following bit of American history would not have come about.

In June 1903, Volume 1, Number 1 of Motorcycle Magazine was published in San Francisco, California. That June issue….plus the next four Editions…. Would chronicle the epic journey of the very first motorized vehicle to successfully cross the continent. Motorcycle Magazine shut it’s doors in 1906, and the story of this historically important “tour” was lost for over seven decades.

When researcher Knudsen finally located it, the material was in the public domain. Anyone who had known where to look could have had the story. Since Road Rider Magazine’s 10th Anniversary was just around the corner, we decided to keep the story secret a few more month, and to publish here (August 1979 Road Rider issue).

We want to express our appreciation to all concerned; the dozens of cooperative folks who willingly furnished information to help piece together the puzzleand especially Herg Glass who was willing to share his secret with the world, and finally Oley Knudsen who did all the legwork.

DREAM CHASER RACIN’ NHRA Atlanta Wrap up–After a great weekend in Norwalk, the Dream Chaser Racin’ team struggled in Atlanta. Racing back to back weekends, the team traveled to Atlanta Dragway for NHRA’s Harley-Davidson Drag Racing Series, NHRA Southeast Division 2 event.

“We came off the truck strong, running 7.415 seconds in the first qualifying round” says Janette Thornley, “A 7.415 second quarter mile is a good number except when you’re running Kirby Apathy or Dale Niles.” Both ran stronger numbers, Kirby with a 7.267 ET at 171.23 mph to land him the number one qualifier spot and Dale with a 7.384 ET at 165.01 mph. “Given that we were only .15 seconds apart for qualifying, it was anyone’s Wally to win”, says Thornley.

For elimination round, the team made a few tuning adjustments as Thornley was paired with Niles but it just wasn’t enough. Thornley lost running a disappointing 7.890 ET at 170.51 mph to Niles 7.381 ET at 174.35 mph.

“As team owner I face some hard decisions as Dream Chaser Racin’ continues to make a name for itself”, says Thornley, “I am making adjustments to team roles that will strengthen the team and assist with our success and longevity of Dream Chaser Racin’.”

“I think I can speak for all of the Harley-Davidson racers attending the NHRA Harley-Davidson Drag Racing Series events,” says Thornley, “we really appreciate NHRA welcoming us to the Lucas Oil Series and the spectators they are bringing in.”

Look for Dream Chaser Racin’ June 14-16, 2013 as they make their way to the next NHRA Harley-Davidson Drag Racing Series event held at the Bandimere Speedway, Bandimere Colorado.

Dream Chaser Racin’ would like to thank LAT Racing Oils, Robbins Performance and MaP for your sponsorship. Sponsors always welcome

Motorcycle Caucus Co-Chair Representative Tim Griffin Highlights Motorcycle Safety– Washington, D.C., May 24, 2013 – Congressional Motorcycle Caucus Co-Chair Representative Tim Griffin (R-AR) entered a statement into the May 22 Congressional Record to highlight motorcycle safety and to promote May is Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month.

Griffin said for the record, “Mr. Speaker, as Co-Chair of the Congressional Motorcycle Caucus and a motorcycle enthusiast, I rise today in support of Motorcycle Awareness Month, which is celebrated each May. With more than 27 million motorcycle riders today, and that number steadily increasing, being mindful of other types of road and highway users is critical for everyone. This is especially the case as the weather is warming up and more motorcycle riders are hitting the road.”

Griffin also recognized that motorcycle safety is a responsibility shared by all road users. “Drivers’ failure to see motorcycles is one of the leading causes of motorcycle crashes, and the prevalence of distracted and inattentive driving poses a significant threat to motorcycle riders. I urge vehicle drivers to check mirrors and blind spots and actively look for motorcycles–especially at intersections. Taking that brief moment can mean the difference between life and death for motorcycle riders and vehicle drivers alike.”

Griffin concluded with an admonition to motorcyclists to also take responsibility for their safety. “I also encourage my fellow motorcycle riders to take appropriate safety precautions by practicing safe riding techniques and wearing appropriate safety equipment.”

The Motorcycle Industry Council’s Director of Federal Affairs, Duane Taylor noted, “Congressmen Griffin is a rider himself and a great friend and supporter of motorcyclists and the motorcycle industry. We would like to thank him for highlighting motorcycle safety and using his position as a Member of Congress to urge all road users to play an active role in the safety of motorcyclists.”

Taylor concluded, “Congressman Griffin and the other members of the Motorcycle Caucus are great champions for motorcyclists. We encourage all riders to urge their Representative to join the Congressional Motorcycle Caucus.”

HARLEY-DAVIDSON HARDTAIL HALF MILER–
Way back when men were men and sheep were nervous, Flat Track racing was one of the most popular two wheeled racing events of the time.

One mile, and half mile dirt or clay race courses hosted hundred of event annually and drew large crowds of spectators. If you didn’t already know, flat track racers by rule were not allowed to have brakes mounted on either axle.

The riders wore special boots with steel plates on the bottom to allow them to “skid” around the four corners of the standard oval shaped track at very high speeds. This writer spend many Sundays at the Santa Clara County Fairgrounds one mile track in San Jose, California watching balls-to-the wall 120 MPH plus races.

The over restored machine pictured here was restored by the late Stan Dishon, of Vallejo, California. Stan added some chrome for a little extra pizzazz.

Note the dual sprockets mounted on the rear wheel. When wanting to change the final drive ratio, the mechanic simply flipped the rear wheel so the high or lower ratio sprocket was on the chain drive side of the motorcycle. Of course the change was very limited, but a little up or down goes a long ways when racing.

Prosecutors are more interested in conviction rates than justice–
Here is a example of what goes on all the time.

–By Kyle Hightower Associated Press

ORLANDO — An attorney who testified during a hearing in the Trayvon Martin case that he’d become aware of evidence the prosecutor didn’t properly turn over to defense lawyers says that he’s come forward out of ethical obligation and harbors no ill will toward his former employer.

Former assistant state attorney Wesley White said Wednesday that Fourth Judicial Circuit information technology director Ben Kruidbos was placed on administrative leave shortly after White testified during a hearing in George Zimmerman’s murder case on Tuesday.

White testified that Kruidbos retrieved three photographs and deleted text messages from Martin’s cellphone that were not disclosed to Zimmerman’s attorneys by the prosecutor. White says Kruidbos was interviewed by state attorney investigators before being placed on leave. A hearing on the issue is scheduled for next week.

BIKER IN FLIGHT–Baptist Preacher was seated next to a Biker on a flight to W. Va. After the plane took off, the Biker asked for a Jack Daniels and Coke, which was brought and placed before him. The flight attendant then asked the preacher if he would like a drink. Appalled, the preacher replied, “I’d rather be tied up and taken advantage of by women of ill-repute, than let liquor touch my lips.

“The Biker then handed his drink back to the attendant and said, “Me too, I didn’t know we had a choice.”

THE ROGUE BAD COP INVESTIGATION NEVER STOPS–It is common knowledge that some members of law enforcement let other cops, political figures and friends off of traffic offenses they ticket others for.

Just for the record I do have personal knowledge of this happening.

This happens so often it is a epidemic.
Now a Florida State Trooper who got caught doing it and was fired wants his job back because other cops are doing the same thing and have not been fired.

Instead of giving the trooper his job back the state should follow up and also fire others who are involved in selective law enforcement.
If it is a law it should apply to all equally.

Here is the article from the Tallahassee newspaper:

BRIEFS Fired trooper fights to get job back

TALLAHASSEE — A fired Florida state trooper is fighting to get back his job after giving a speeding legislator a break on a ticket. Former trooper Charles Swindle appeared Wednesday in a personnel hearing where he answered questions about his decision to issue citations for no insurance to two legislators in November.

The first part of the hearing included video footage where Swindle can be heard telling lawmakers that he was giving them the citation instead of writing them an expensive speeding ticket. His attorney insists the trooper was following a long practice of giving legislators a break.

NEVADA LANE SPLITTING LAW FAILS–A proposal To Make Nevada The First State In The nation To Legalize Motorcycle Lane Splitting Has died In the State Senate. The bill would have allowed motorcycles to drive between cars as long as traffic was stopped and the motorcycle did not go faster than 10 mph.

Proponents said the legislation would make it safer for motorcyclists to ride in heavy traffic, preventing rear-end collisions and over-heating motorcycles. Had the legislation passed, it would have made Nevada the first state in the nation to officially legalize lane splitting. California allows lane-splitting although there is no law regulating it. Many countries throughout the world, including much of Europe, allow motorcycle lane splitting

NEW THREAT TO BIKERS–As bikers we’ve always had to deal with hazards like the wet roads, gravel and the inconsiderate left turn drivers. Lately we’ve had to put up with cell phones and texting. But it seems there’s a new danger out there waiting for us. It seems a falling tree struck a Harley rider last Sunday in Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania.

The driver said he was going through a right-hand curve when he heard what sounded like a tree cracking along the side of the road. Police said the rider applied his brakes but the tree fell across the road and struck the bike and riders.

State police said the operator and passenger were unrestrained, not wearing seatbelts, but they were wearing proper eye protection. Both the bike’s operator and a passenger were injured in the accident.

Watch for falling trees…

When the clock hits midnight Thursday another year on the calendar and the last year of my ‘60s are in the books somewhere. The incredible 69 will arrive Friday, what are the odds….war veteran, motorcycle addict since the late ‘50s, sky diver, fly swatter salesman and a few other hair-razing, life defying experiences. Bring on the dancin’ girls, it’s time to think about sex, drugs and Rock N Roll.

Speaking of hair-razing, please welcome my 2nd Grandson, 6/28/2013, 5:02 am, 7lb 10 oz., full head of dark hair, Leon Von Mohr Wheeler. Photo was after his first bath, 5 minutes old.

On the home front in Wilmington your 5-Ball Racing Team loaded and rolled to Race Tech Suspension in Corona, CA. bright and early Tuesday about noon, for a 21st Century state of the art suspension tune up. The owner of Race Tech has set records on the salt, one on an electric motorcycle. We’ll dig into the slippery details and report.

Slippery on my mind. The latest news from Air Tech Streamlining….Kent Riches, Streamlining Guru returning from Thailand excursion to save Bonneville Racers from around the globe. Mid week we’ll pick up a clean, sleek, bad ass 1/4 fairing in San Marcos, CA. for street duty, mount a headlight, then paint and stripe. Naked on the street might work. Stand by.

We have a firm date (always subject to change) for private, hobby shop Dyno time in San Jose, June 7-8-9. Three of Northern California’s finest tuners, Ron Williams (Dyno and much more), Jeff Bodie (Computer, Racer, Wrench) and Duncan Keller (all of the above) will be on hand.

These men maintained, serviced and tuned my 2004 Dyna, with the same drive train/engine package in the new Racer, while the Dyna rolled countless trouble free miles on the street and the salt flats setting two records.

On the ever-shrinking list after Race Tech Suspension saves my ass, we return to Dr. Willie’s in Long Beach to tie up the loose ends getting ready for a trip North to the dyno. Top ten on the list, fabricate shift linkage and foot peg mounting plates, finish air plenum, shorter clutch cable from Barnett’s, headlight plug, 270 mph speed, design a new dash, fill with fluids, fresh spark plugs, check all systems and pre start for a few seconds.

Quite the week, new kid, new hot rod, new year and life rolls on at the speed of light.

Hang on tight.

UNUSUAL TREATMENT FOR KNEE ARTHRITIS–Can knee pain be relieved with dextrose (a form of sugar) dissolved in water? Injecting such a solution into ligaments and tendons may indeed prove to be an effective way to address arthritis.

A recently published study from the University of Wisconsin suggests that the benefits of this treatment, called prolotherapy, can last up to one year.

The research team divided 90 patients diagnosed with osteoarthritis of the knee into three groups. One group received the sugar-water injections, the second group got injections of salt water, and the third group was taught exercises to perform at home.

After 12 months, patients in the sugar water group reported improvements in knee function of 16 points on a 100-point scale of osteoarthritis severity. Those in the salt water group improved by five points and the exercise group by seven points, the investigators reported.

As for pain, the sugar water group improved 14 points on the same severity scale after one year; the salt water and exercise groups improved seven points and nine points, respectively.

My take? The theory behind prolotherapy is that the injections stimulate growth of new, healthy tissue to help stabilize bones and joints, thus relieving pain and stiffness. I’ve read that critics of previous prolotherapy studies supported the methodology used in this new investigation, but noted that additional studies will have to be completed before we can consider prolotherapy as standard treatment for arthritis.

I agree. Risks to this method include localized inflammation, pain, swelling, redness, soreness, temporary stiffness and bruising as well as temporary numbness, tingling or itching at the injection site. The procedure costs $200 to $1,000 per session and is not covered by Medicare. If you prefer supplements to injections for arthritic pain relief, I recommend combination products that contain ginger, turmeric and other anti-inflammatory herbs, which I find work very well with few or no side effects.

MICKEY GLOVE MEETS MULTIPLE NEEDS–
Racer Gloves Introduces Do-It-All Alternative.

May 29, 2013 Morgan Hill, CA — Racer Gloves USA, which prides itself on having the best-fitting gloves you can buy, now has a glove that is an ideal fit into several categories. The “Mickey” is equally at home on the street, dual sport or as an off-road glove. One glove really can do it all, according to the Austrian glove manufacturer’s exclusive North American agent.

The Mickey is a mid-length sport glove featuring a combination of leather and mesh construction. A Clarino palm with silicone finger-grip diamonds makes for a better feel on the controls, even when conditions get a little wet. Better protection comes from Super-Fabric® covered scaphoid and knuckle protectors. “With its hard shell knuckle and palm protection combined with leather, mesh and nylon fabrics, the Mickey makes for a great combo of protection and ventilation,” explains Racer Gloves USA’s Lee Block.

“We really like the Mickey since it fits into several categories,” adds Block. “For example, we just finished a 300 mile dual sport ride wearing the Mickey and the glove exceeded even our expectations. It provided plenty of protection, was not hot and with it’s great fit, no blisters!

The Mickey is much more than an off-road glove, though. “We have customers who love it for the street due to its tough look and protection.” Don’t forget about the fit… “Our products are guaranteed to be the best fitting gloves you’ve tried, or your money back,” proclaims Block. “The Mickey really is one of our favorite gloves for street use, but we really like it for dual sport/off-road riding with its great knuckle and palm protection.”

Features:
– Clarino palm with silicone grip diamonds on fingers
– Super-Fabric® covered hard protection on palm and knuckles
– Leather covered protectors on fingers
– Over-the-top Velcro wrist closure
– Sizes S-3XL

TECH ARTICLE FROM DOC ROBINSON FEATURES JIMS FORCE FLOW—You’ll see it in the next couple of days on Bikernet.

Summer is here and engine heat once again becomes and issue given that Twin Cam engines run hot. Often, very hot. And, as you hot them up to produce more horsepower, they run even hotter again. Which is where this JIMS innovative product comes in. The patent pending JIMS ForceFlow literally forces the heat away from your engine by pushing high velocity air through the cylinder fin pack in a wide flow pattern, directed at the head gasket surface.

Powered by a cooling fan that was designed to cool brakes in NASCAR, it is claimed that the JIMS ForceFlow can lower head temperatures up to 100 degrees. The ForceFlow can either be activated by a thermostat (included), or wired through a manual on/off switch, or both.

This unique design also includes a horn inside the ForceFlow’s streamlined housing, and thus gives the horn mount, or left side of the bike, a new look. The ForceFlow comes with all necessary hardware and wiring. Now there are way too many overblown claims about various aftermarket products for American V-Twins so I wanted to give this unit a thorough test.

THIS JUST IN FROM MICHIGAN–This is from an AP reporter. I spoke to her today. This is scary because IIHS did a really good job on this study. Full study do out tomorrow.

–Jeff

Jeff:
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has a study being released
tomorrow that show motorcycle injury insurance claims rose in severity
after Michigan’s helmet law was changed. I’m looking for your response.
I’m writing today, although the story won’t move on the wire until late
tonight.

Some key paragraph’s from IIHS’s study:

HLDI measures insurance losses three ways: by claim frequency, or rate; claim severity, or the average amount paid on each claim; and overall
losses, which is the product of frequency and severity. Comparing losses in Michigan with losses in Illinois, Indiana, Ohio and Wisconsin – where helmet laws did not change – and controlling for motorcycle age and class;
rider age, gender and marital status; weather; and other factors, HLDI found that MedPay claim frequency was 10 percent higher than would have
been expected without the law change, claim severity was 36 percent higher, and overall losses were 51 percent higher. The increases in claim
severity and overall losses were statistically significant, but the change in claim frequency was not …

… Opponents of helmets sometimes argue that they make crashes more likely by increasing fatigue and impeding visibility and hearing. By that
logic, the crash rate should decline when a helmet requirement is repealed. However, HLDI analysts found that claim frequency under collision insurance, which covers crash damage to a motorcycle and is the coverage most likely to come into play after any crash, rose 12 percent.
(Collision claim severity remained unchanged.) The fact that the claim rate didn’t fall once helmets were no longer mandatory undercuts this
particular argument. It’s not clear what would cause collision frequency to rise, but it’s possible that riders who prefer not to wear helmets rode
more miles after the law change. That also could explain the 10 percent increase in MedPay claim frequency.

Thanks for your help,

–Joan

POLARIS STEPS UP TO HELP WITH THE OKLAHOMA DISASTER–Polaris Donating 10 Off-Road Vehicles to The Salvation Army for Oklahoma Disaster Relief.
Military units to feature Run-Flat and Non-Pneumatic Tires due to harsh conditions

Polaris Industries Inc. (NYSE: PII) today announced the company is donating 10 military, off-road vehicles with a combination of Run-Flat and Non-Pneumatic Tires (NPT), to enhance The Salvation Army’s ability to transport food, water and other critical supplies to survivors, in Moore, Okla. The units will be delivered from Polaris’ Osceola, Wis. plant, free of charge, thanks to a generous donation from Bay and Bay Transport and Overbye Trucking.

“With debris on the ground from thousands of destroyed homes, these vehicles will allow us to serve in places our mobile kitchens cannot,” said Lt. Col. Robert Thomson, Salvation Army Northern Division Commander. “We thank Polaris for this incredible gift. These vehicles will allow us to serve more people in crisis.”

The donated units, a combination of military ATV, RANGER and RZR vehicles, are outfitted with either Run Flat tires or NPTs to prevent down time. Run-Flat tires resist the effects of deflation when punctured giving the operator the ability to continue to use the vehicle; and NPTs are built to never go flat and are virtually indestructible.

“Oklahoma will rebound from this terrible tragedy, through the resiliency of its people and the assistance of organizations like The Salvation Army,” said Scott Wine, Polaris’ Chief Executive Officer. “Polaris has long supported their charitable efforts, and we hope the donation of these vehicles will assist them as they provide the affected communities with the relief they desperately need.”

To date, The Salvation Army has served more than 17,000 meals and snacks to tornado survivors and relief workers across Oklahoma, with pastoral care provided to about 800 people. The Salvation Army is now preparing to offer long-term case management, which can include financial assistance, stress management classes, replacement furniture and much more.

STEP UP AND HELP WITH THE OKLAHOMA EFFORT–To donate to The Salvation Army’s Oklahoma tornado relief efforts:
•Give online at SalvationArmyNorth.org or call 800-SAL-ARMY (725-2769)
•Text “STORM” to 80888 to make a $10 donation via your mobile phone. To confirm your gift, respond “Yes.”
•Mail a check to The Salvation Army, 2445 Prior Ave. N., Roseville, MN 55113. Designate your gift “Oklahoma Tornado.”
Information about the complete line of Polaris products, apparel and vehicle accessories are available from authorized Polaris dealers or anytime at www.polaris.com.

Tom Caldwell/OLD GUYS DO RULE RACING make’s 1st Race of the Season–Tom Caldwell, Tennessee native and veteran drag racer made his first race of the 2013 season. And according to Caldwell, it was a great race.

“We had a GREAT weekend at Atlanta Dragway. We were received well by all the NHRA officials and track staff, and were thanked many times for our coming to their race.”

Clint Rabb of Alberta, Canada was there on the bike he bought from Mike Lozano. It is a monster, 158” and nitrous. He ran 7.35 – 7.5’s at 175+!
I would leave on him every time and at the 1/8 mile mark he would turn my head around, like you see on the NHRA show, when a car blows the tires off and the other competitor FLY”S by them! It was good practice, to work hard and leave on time.”

“I got several good runs in with valuable data to evaluate for this week at the AMRA race in Maryland, running several 8.0’s at over 164 mph. I did not get to T&T on Friday as we just got there and the bike was not 100%. It was a push to get there and I “NEVER” arrive, not ready! But we got it done.
I fought the clutch on the new combo as the motor has a lot more torque than last year.”

“I was comfortable on the bike. I cut several good lights .062, .059 and a .035 in the final. Great for the upcoming racing. Dana and I worked feverishly on it all day Friday and the Q1 run of 8.17 @ 164+ was the 1st run on it and my 1st pass since last October. I think we represented ourselves very well, clean, fast, professional, and the car racers were all over the bikes marveling at the craftsmanship we instill in our equipment.”

“Matt Polito, from Dragbike was around taking shots all weekend. We should get some good pics from him. I had many meet and greet interactions with the spectators. It was a good experience. We’ll be back.”

ROAD AMERICA RACING UPDATE–Here is a little more info that fellow Bikernetters might enjoy.

The next AHRMA race is at Road America, June 7,8,9. The H-D and Indian Flathead hand-shifters will be there in full force. With Road America being in the shadow of the Harley-Davidson Factory, there is an event planned at the Museum on Thursday, June 6.

A fellow AHRMA Racer, Wes Orloff, is an H-D employee, and has made arraignments with the H-D museum for a special event and racebike display. Wes is a great racer, and banged himself up pretty good running up Pikes Peak on an XR1200 last year….hopefully he will be back in the saddle at Road America.

It really does amaze me sometimes the caliber of people who allow me on the track with them….A schmuck like me running with some of the best around….who-da-thought?

This schmuck CY won’t be at Road America, but some of the best riders in the world will…..get out to the track and H-D Museum for a truly unique motorcycling event!

And just to close things out in “Proper” Bikernet style…..here’s what my friends and teammates have to say about my “stellar racing reputation”…..its good to have friends.

TENNESSSEE Town says its traffic cameras not missed– RED BANK — Now that traffic enforcement cameras have been gone from a Hamilton County city for four months, officials are saying just how much they are not missed. Red Bank ended its contract in January.

Citizen complaints drove a 4-1 city commission vote to end the contract after six years and 69,000 citations. The Chattanooga Times Free Press reported that officials said the number of traffic crashes hasn’t increased, there have been fewer tickets issued and anecdotal evidence indicates there is more traffic in the city.

Mayor John Roberts said people continue to tell him they’re glad the cameras are gone. Roberts said the cameras made the city appear unwelcoming.

BIG BIKE SHOW, ‘NO RULES’ DRAG RACING ON TAP AT IOWA GRAND MOTORCYCLE RALLY–An impressive array of motorcycles on display in one of the region’s largest bike shows, along with ‘no-rules’ heads-up motorcycle drag racing will be among the highlights of the second annual ‘Iowa Grand Motorcycle Rally’, scheduled for Thursday, May 30 through Sunday, June 2 at Iowa Speedway in Newton.

The ‘IGR Bike Show’ presented by Handy Motorcycle Lifts will be on display near the Rally concert stage on Saturday, June 1, featuring street bikes, customs and exotic fabrication of two and three-wheeled machinery.

“There’s something for everybody to admire at Handy’s ‘IGR Bike Show’,” said Iowa Speedway CEO Doug Fritz. “From sport and touring bikes to antiques and custom trikes, this incredible display of motorcycle art is going to be a highlight of our Rally.”

According to Fritz, the J&P Cycles ‘No Rules Drags’ on Saturday is designed to let riders challenge each other and themselves on Iowa Speedway’s 500-foot all-concrete dragstrip without a lot of technical detail imposed.

“This is old school drag racing for bikers,” Fritz explained. “It’s ‘run what ya’ brung’, with no timing system and no rules. Just a lot of fun going full throttle down the track. And, thanks to J&P Cycles, it’s included in the Saturday Rally ticket.”

Other special attractions at the ‘Iowa Grand Motorcycle Rally’ include the Big Barn Harley-Davidson ‘Demo Rides’ on featured Harleys, while Big Barn service techs stand by to do minor repairs and offer advice to Harley enthusiasts, and the ‘Budweiser Bar Tent’ on the north end of the concourse, where cold beer and other popular beverages will be in ample supply.

Individual ticket prices for the 2013 Iowa Grand Motorcycle Rally are $20 for Friday, May 31 ($25 with a rider), and $25 for Saturday, June 1 ($30 with a rider). Two-day tickets are available for $40, or $50 with a rider, while the Thursday and Sunday activities are free and do not require a ticket.

Tent camping is free in designated areas, while RV’s are $50 per site with no utility hook-ups, and $150 with water/electric included, for the four days. Vendor spaces are still available, as well as advertising and sponsorship opportunities for businesses catering to the motorcycle marketplace.

Tickets and camp sites for the 2nd Annual ‘Iowa Grand Motorcycle Rally’ are available online at www.iowaspeedway.com and www.iowagrandrally.com, or by calling the toll-free ticketing hotline at 866-RUSTY-GO (787-8946). WILD IN THE STREETS—Don’t know which way to turn. I’m working on some quirky metal-art projects, and you will see the rusting results next week. We have Doc’s tech and another tech from the Tail Gunner. Our extreme content inventory include features coming from Markus Cuff, Buck Lovell, and Peter Linney.

I need to write the article about the sail around Greece for Cruising Outpost, and I’m anxious to delve into the piece on the next Girl of Bikernet. Hang on for that one.

Maybe I can reach Ron at Paughco tomorrow, and we can hatch a plan to build the frame for the Assalt Weapon II and kick off the project. Hang on for that one.

Have a helluva weekend.

It is common knowledge that some members of law enforcement let other cops, political figures and friends off of traffic offenses they ticket others for.

Here is the article from the Tallahassee newspaper

BRIEFS Fired trooper fights to get job back ??TALLAHASSEE — A fired Florida state trooper is fighting to get back his job after giving a speeding legislator a break on a ticket.??Former trooper Charles Swindle appeared Wednesday in a personnel hearing where he answered questions about his decision to issue citations for no insurance to two legislators in November.??The first part of the hearing included video footage where Swindle can be heard telling lawmakers that he was giving them the citation instead of writing them an expensive speeding ticket.??His attorney insists the trooper was following a long practice of giving legislators a break.
