Hey,

This is going to be a good one, according to a government study of websites. First, we’re somewhat behind because of my week vacation sailing around Greece. There are 2000 islands surrounding Greece. I was busy.

It’s also a hot one because of the wild shit happening around us constantly, including the Bikernet staff—never a dull moment. So without further ado, let’s hit it:

Remember, the Bikernet Thursday News is sponsored in part by IronWorks Magazine.

Bonnier, Source Interlink Exchange Titles–
Companies agree to three separate deals, 16 titles change hands.

By Michael Rondon
Folio Magazine

Change continues at Bonnier as the company announced its third major holdings change in the last month, agreeing to acquire nine motorcycle titles from Source Interlink Media. Concurrently, Bonnier has sold the majority of its TransWorld enthusiast properties and sound-system and theater review title, Sound + Vision, to Source Interlink.

While related, each deal was structured separately and was not part of an asset swap, according to a Bonnier spokesperson. Financial terms of the agreements were not disclosed.

The activity comes after Bonnier had recently sold Parenting and Babytalk to Meredith, and five snowsports properties to Active Interest Media.

“The transactions today are the last in a series of moves we have implemented to transform our company to one that will achieve revenue growth and sustained profitability,” says Dave Freyang, CEO of Bonnier, in an internal memo. “I realize this spring has brought significant change to our company. I also recognize that change creates uncertainty. Please be certain of this: We have our operating groups and brands in place, and we have the right people to allow us to achieve our goals.”

A Bonnier spokesperson confirms that there will be no layoffs in the immediate future stemming from the deal.

Bonnier will pair the acquired properties with Cycle World, which it acquired from Hearst in 2011, to form the Bonnier Motorcycle Group–the largest media group in the segment, according to the company. Source Interlink staff will join Bonnier’s Cycle World personnel at its Carlsbad, Calif. offices.

*Update: Bonnier has promoted Andrew Leisner to VP and Group Publisher of the Motorcycle Group. Leisner was publisher of Cycle World.

“The acquisition supports Bonnier’s strategy to be focused in vertical enthusiast interest media,” Freygang says in a statement. “We believe in going deep into selected verticals, and it’s essential that our brands be in a leadership position within those verticals.”

Bonnier’s list of new holdings includes Motorcyclist, Sport Rider, Dirt Rider, Motorcycle Cruiser, Hot Bike, Baggers, Super Streetbike, Street Chopper and ATV Rider.

NEW BOOK HITS THE STANDS–Adventure Motorcycling Manual – 2nd Edition

Everything You Need to Plan and Complete the Journey of a Lifetime

In typical Haynes style and with an emphasis on pictorially-led chapters, the structure of the book leads the reader in a logical progression using first-hand experience from the planning stage through to execution. The subject matter has many unknowns for first-timers and the book will address the majority of these questions, providing enough information and comfort for the reader to confidently consider, plan and complete a trip. The book should inspire, enthuse, invigorate and at the very least, tempt the reader into considering the possibility of an adventure, albeit for some this will take place from the comfort of an armchair, with the book firmly in hand.

NORML REPORT: Inhaled Cannabis Reduces Crohn’s Symptoms–

Tel Aviv, Israel: Inhaling cannabis reduces symptoms of Crohn’s disease compared to placebo in patients who have not been responsive to traditional therapies, according to clinical trial data published online in the journal Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology.

Researchers at the Meir Medical Center, Department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology in Israel assessed the safety and efficacy of inhaled cannabis versus placebo in 21 subjects with Crohn’s disease who failed to respond to conventional treatments.

Eleven participants smoked standardized cannabis cigarettes containing 23 percent THC and 0.5 percent CBD (cannabidiol) twice daily over a period of eight weeks. The other ten subjects smoked placebo cigarettes containing no active cannabinoids.

Investigators reported, “Our data show that 8-weeks treatment with THC-rich cannabis, but not placebo, was associated with a significant decrease of 100 points in CDAI (Crohn’s Disease and activity index) scores.” Five of the eleven patients in the study group also reported achieving disease remission (defined as a reduction in patient’s CDAI score by more than 150 points).
Researchers reported that “no significant side effects” were associated with cannabis inhalation.
The study is the first placebo-controlled clinical trial to assess the consumption of cannabis for the treatment of Crohn’s.

Israeli researchers had previously published observational trial data reporting that Crohn’s patients require fewer disease-related surgeries following their use of cannabis.

According to survey data published in 2011 in the European Journal of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, some one-half of Crohn’s disease patients acknowledge having used cannabis to mitigate their disease symptoms.

For more information, please contact Paul Armentano, NORML Deputy Director, at: paul@norml.org. Full text of the study, “Cannabis Induces a Clinical Response in Patients with Crohn’s Disease: a Prospective Placebo-Controlled Study,” appears online in Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology.

NO DEATHS REPORTED, during Grand Strand biker week– MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (AP) – Authorities are reporting few problems with the Spring Harley-Davidson motorcycle Rally along the Grand Strand.

Troopers say no bikers have been killed so far during the weeklong event, but they warn this weekend is usually the busiest time for the rally.
The Highway Patrol and local agencies have increased enforcement. Horry County Police Sgt. Jeff Benton says his officers have seen an increase in alcohol violations this year.

The Harley-Davidson rally is just the start of the motorcycle season at the beach. Next week is the Atlantic Beach Bike Fest during Memorial Day weekend.

“Cruisin’ The Coast” Spring Bike Rally comes to an end–

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WBTW) – The Harley-Davidson “Cruisin’ the Coast” spring bike rally held its last day today. Many of the Harley riders will head back to their daily routine.

And while many people have the image of tough motorcycle riders, behind the loud pipes and leather are doctors, lawyers, and even government workers. All kinds of professions were represented at this bike week.

We met one woman who is a technology consultant in the travel industry. She said she even stereotyped bikers before she got to interact with them.

“When my husband got his motorcycle about 10 years ago I was like, what are my neighbors going to think with him riding down the street. But we have met so many people over the years, judges, lawyers and doctors all different professions,” said Chauny Dunbar.

Dunbar said she thinks the stigma of motorcycles dates back to the 60s and 70s and from movies. But it was apparent all week that it’s just not like that anymore. Vendors told us they even sell baby clothes because of a more family presence.

TODAY’S MANTRA FROM THE BIKERNET PHILISOPHER–Is Your Consciousness One of Faith and Trust or Hope?

All I have seen teaches me to trust the creator for all I have not seen. –Ralph Waldo Emerson

The Universe does not respond to hopes and dreams, the Universe responds to what we expect and accept fueled with Faith and Trust. When we truly believe with Faith and Trust in the Unlimited Power within and Expect and Accept the Divine Bounty of Life things begin to manifest.

Many wonder why things aren’t going the way he hope them to and fuel these results with fear, doubt and unworthiness, which creates a viscous circle.

So often I forget to pause and think about what I am believing, thinking and talking about. As I start my day, I Pause and get clear about what I expect, accept and will manifest throughout my day. I am taking the time to write out my goals for the day (you can do the same, if you choose), I am clear on the results and know All is unfolding in right and perfect order. My Faith sustains my expectancy at all times.

Today Know: I begin today with Faith and Trust that all my dreams and goals are manifesting. I let Go of any doubt, fear or unworthiness and move to the consciousness of expecting, accepting and manifesting wonderful results. It is clear to me that it begins with Faith, coupled with acceptance and expectance resulting in great demonstrations in my Life. I no longer hope I Know. I am Grateful for this Truth, I am Grateful for the right to change my Life right here and right now. In Faith, Trust and Peace I release these words to Spirit Knowing my Good is Here.

And So It Is
Namaste’

To Wear a Helmet or Not Wear a Helmet? That’s Still the Question–

–By Mark Nootbaar

May is Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month in Pennsylvania, and while everyone wants to keep riders safe, how to best do that is still up for debate in the commonwealth.

When Gov. Tom Corbett declared May Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month he encouraged riders to head to the PennDOT-sponsored website livefreeridealive.com to get tips on how to stay safe while riding. Along with tips such as wearing sturdy shoes and checking tire pressure, it also recommends that riders wear a helmet.

That suggestion runs contrary to the beliefs of many riders who think helmets do more harm than good. At a recent rally in Harrisburg, supporters of the motorcycle awareness and education group A.B.A.T.E Pennsylvania celebrated the 10th anniversary of the passage of legislation repealing Pennsylvania’s mandatory helmet law.

“We want the right to decide,” said state Sen. John Wozniak (D-Cambria), who was among the lawmakers leading the charge 10 years ago to repeal the law. “It’s our fate; it’s our responsibility. To this day I still think it was the right decision to make.”

According to PennDOT, there were 854,493 licensed motorcyclists in the state last year. That’s a 13 percent increase from a decade ago. At the same time, the data shows there was a 9 percent uptick in crashes involving motorcycles statewide, from 3,600 in 2011 to 4,000 in 2012. Those crashes resulted in 210 fatalities, which is up from 199 in 2011.

Most wrecks involving motorcycles do not involve any other vehicle.

Last year the Corbett administration moved forward on motorcycle safety by supporting Act 84 of 2012, which requires motorcycle permit holders under 18 years old to take and successfully complete the Pennsylvania Motorcycle Safety Program’s Basic Rider Course in order to receive their license.

“What is given by a stoke of a pen can be removed by a stroke of a pen,” Wozniak said, adding that it is a “privilege to wear that helmet or not to wear that helmet.”

All sides agree that keeping motorcycle riders safe is not just the responsibility of the rider. Both camps are using the proclamation of Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month to remind all drivers that “bikes are everywhere” and are repeating the bumper sticker slogan “look twice, save a life.”

WR FLATHEAD DISCOVERED–I’ve got something here that I thought you might enjoy.

This is a friend’s WR Flathead racer. I watched, and laid my hands on it some, as it was coming together. Roy is a friend, and obviously an excellent mechanic, craftsman, racer. This bike was mostly built out of his home shop…….needless to say, it is not like everyone’s home shop.

He put it on the track with WERA at Barber Motorsports Park in May. He had a valve guide problem that is now squared away……Next racing stop is Road America with AHRMA. A dozen or so Handshift Flatheads on one of the most beautiful tracks in the country, in the shadow of the H-D factory where it was born….frikkin beautiful man!

Roy and I are also veterans, so helping the Wounded Warriors at “Riding Into History” hits us where it counts.

He has gotten some help with parts from David and Jeff at Atlanta H-D. There may be others that Roy cares to mention.

What is up with your Flathead Bonneville bike?…….wanna race?

Greeley police look for suspects in biker brawl–
GREELEY, Colo. – The Greeley Police Department said it is working to identify suspects in a biker gang stabbing at a sports bar Thursday night.

Officers were called to the RoadKill Sports Grill at the Greeley Mall at 9:30 p.m. on a report of a fight and shooting. Upon arrival, officers found more than 100 people in the parking lot who had been attending a “Bike Night” event sponsored by the business.

During the event, which takes place in the parking lot, rival gang members from Hell’s Angels, Sons of Silence and Silent Warriors were involved in a large fight, police said.

Two people were knifed during the fight, according to police. As the groups were fleeing the scene, a member of Hell’s Angels pulled a pistol and fired two rounds into a rival gang member’s motorcycle, police said. In addition, another person fired several rounds into the air.

On Friday, the Roadkill Sports Grill was served with a motion to suspend its liquor license for a period not to exceed 15 days. A show cause hearing for the business will be scheduled to review the incident to determine if they are eligible to retain their liquor license.

Greeley Police Chief Jerry Garner stated that incidents of this nature will not be tolerated within the city. He also thanked the Weld County Sheriff’s Office and the Evans Police Department for their assistance in the investigation.

UNCLE MONKEY GETS IN TOUCH WITH SNOW WHITE–In building Snow White my goal was to build a stock looking custom softail. That involved working with fat bob gas tanks and stock speedo. I also wanted to keep the bike looking “factory” built by using an aftermarket wiring harness with a single brain that control everything including dash lights It was quite labor intensive, but I was happy with the finished product.

Unfortunately, when sequencing through everything to make sure it worked properly several of the features didn’t work. A call to my supplier revealed that those features had been disabled. No problem but a simple note included with the instructions would have been nice.

The last glitch was the taillight worked opposite to what it was suppose to. Other than that I was ready for the road and for Johnny Law wanting to harass me.

The after glow didn’t last long. A week into riding I lost the headlight, then the horn. Taillight and brake lights failed a couple weeks after that.

I soldiered on by-passing what was needed to keep the bike running and ordered a complete new harness hoping to make it through the rest of the season before tearing the bike apart in the cold of winter to replace the brain. The harness completely failed in the Needles in Sturgis leaving me sitting on the side of the road waiting for a ride back to the campsite. Back home I did get it to start once but lost the left signal light before I could even get it out of the garage. I decided to leave it until the new harness was in.

After months of waiting and hard work rewiring the bike I connected the battery to power up the new harness for the first time. I was about to start plugging in the auxiliary harness to the handlebars and dash when I heard the distinct sizzling bacon of shorted wires. I quickly disconnected and began the meticulous task of going over the harness to find the short, the pinched wire that was the culprit. Not finding anything I connected the harness again, again the sizzle. I ran my hand over the wires hoping to find a hot spot but found nothing until I touched the brain. Yep Murphy’s Law ran amuck. The new brain was shorted out internally right out of the box.

Automotive wiring is not my specialty, but I refuse to wait another six months to replace yet another complete wiring harness that may or may not work. I found a few simple wiring diagrams, plotted out where everything would need to go, how everything should work. I’ll be powering the prototype Soh Ego Designs wiring harness up tonight with my fingers cross that it will work better then my high dollar pieces of crap laying melted on the floor.

BIKERNET BAGGERS CIGAR OF THE WEEK– TATUAJE RESERVA. Country of Origin: Miami, USA
Wrapper: Habano Ecuador
Binder: Nicaragua
Filler: Nicaragua
Length: 7-inch,
Ring: 47,
Box Count: 25

With ten years of cigar designing experience Mister Pete Johnson and Tatuaje Cigars deserve to get some media attention for his vast and exceptional stogie portfolio. This cigar has been on the market for several years, still an awesome smoke.

Tatuaje will continue to deliver its great characteristics for into the future, with the Seleccion de Cazador line destined to become a classic in the industry. Over the years Tatuaje has had several productive releases, this year should be a big year for him as well.

Today’s smoke has been around for sometime, but has been virtually forgotten in terms of reviews. Typically the Reserva line uses a wrapper from the viso priming, but this wrapper was the wrapper that was intended for the Cojonu smokes, and is significantly stronger. Originally crafted with all Nicaraguan tobacco, the cigar now is composed with an Ecuadorian Habano wrapper and Nicaraguan fille!

The cigar possesses a beautiful and smooth wrapper that has a nice natural brown coloring, light Colorado, and has an aroma of coffee, earth, cedar and leather at the foot. There is a terrific cold draw and the construction is terrific.

Halbert Triumphant in Grand National Return–
A Hollywood script writer couldn’t have dreamed up the story any better. Saturday night in Stockton, California, Sammy Halbert made a triumphant return to racing by taking victory in the AMA Pro Flat Track presented by J&P Cycles Grand National Championship Main Event on the Half-Mile at the San Joaquin County Fairgrounds.

Halbert, making his comeback from an off-season knee surgery, and riding his South East Harley Flat Track Live-backed Harley-Davidson XR750, emerged victorious after a race long battle with Dodge Brothers Racing’s Brad Baker. Lloyd Brothers Motorsports rider Henry Wiles took third with a late-race surge around former champ Jake Johnson. It was a great ride for the Short Track and TT specialist Wiles, since he hadn’t raced a Harley-Davidson in years. Johnson and Robert Pearson rounded out the top five.

“That was awesome! What a race,” said a jubilant Halbert. “They did a great job on the track and I’m stoked. I had a long layoff from racing there with shoulder surgery and then I came back and tore up my knee. I’m only 12 weeks out of knee surgery and it’s still not 100 percent, but I feel 100 percent on the bike that’s for sure. I want to say thanks to the California crowd who came out and supported me. It’s always fun racing in this state. My team and I really got a good win here and it’s definitely something to build off of.”

Many figured it would take Halbert a race or two to get back in the swing of things, but the 25-year-old racer from Graham, Wash., proved his rehab from ACL surgery made him as strong as ever. He and Baker traded the lead back and forth several times throughout the 25-lap National at Stockton, but in the end the experience of Halbert made all the difference and he was able to pull away from the 20-year-old Baker, who also hails from the state of Washington.

“Brad came by me, I know he’s hungry for a win,” Halbert said of the race. “I was like, ‘Let’s see if I can steal another one from him.’ He was right there and I didn’t want to be the guy who gave him that first win, so I had to dig deep. I was getting tired and he was starting to pull away and I started thinking about that big Harley contingency and I was like, ‘I want that money. Let’s go!’ I got on the gas and put it on the outside and found a line on the outside there in turn three and four and made it happen. It took me awhile to get around Brad. I ran into him a few times, but I finally got by and I didn’t see him again.”

Baker has opened the 2013 season as a runner up three consecutive times. The young racer is more than eager to score his first victory, which he’ll be looking to do at the upcoming series racing on the legendary Springfield (Ill.) Mile on May 26.

“I got off to a great start and old Kevin Atherton (former AMA Grand National winner) told me not to be afraid to try out that top line it looks like there’s going to be some tacky dirt coming in,” Baker explained of Stockton. “I kind of got a groove going and Sammy and I did a little elbow rubbing and had a lot of fun. Another second-place finish; I guess consistency is the key, so we’re going to have to keep that up. I’m so close to a win I can almost taste it. It’s definitely something I want to add to my list.”

With his podium run at Stockton, Henry Wiles has established himself as a true championship contender for 2013.

“I’m still building a little confidence on this bike,” Wiles said of his new ride on the Lloyd Brothers Motorsports Harley. “I came back on Jake (Johnson) and I’m really excited about this season because this is the first time I’ve had this good of a bike to be able to finish on the podium at these types of tracks.”

The Springfield Mile is next up. One rider looking to bounce back there will be defending champ Jared Mees. After a promising start where he won both his heat race and the Dash for Cash, Mees had a hard impact with Wiles early on and nearly crashed. The miscue dropped him back to last place and he never recovered, only circulating the track in an effort to score as many points as possible. He finished 16th, the last rider running.

Brandon Robinson still leads the Grand National standings after finishing sixth in Stockton.

Wyatt Maguire, of Mead, Wash., scored the victory in the J&P Cycles Pro Singles final. Maguire, riding a Kirkland Racing Yamaha YZ450F, moved past early leader Shayna Texter and pulled away to a comfortable 4.616-second victory over Texter. Kyle Johnson had a great surge late in the race to pass Rodney Spencer Jr. to nail down the final podium spot.

“It was definitely tough getting by people, but we ended up changing gearing and it helped a lot,” Maguire said. “This is my first main [victory] and I’m happy to do it pretty close to home. I mean 14 hours, that’s about as close as it gets for me.”
Maguire and Johnson are now tied atop the Pro Singles standings.

The Memorial Day weekend Springfield Mile is one of the iconic races annually on the AMA Grand National racing calendar. Held on the historic Mile of the Illinois State Fairgrounds, the race features a long freight train of riders lined up in the draft and often is not decided until the last lap. Texan Willie McCoy is the defending winner of the May race.

Motorcycle safety crackdown set for Monday in O’side, California—

By Teri Figueroa

OCEANSIDE — Oceanside police will target drivers on two and four wheels Monday in a crackdown to ensure motorcycle safety.
Extra officers will patrol city streets frequented by motorcyclists and where the most motorcycle crashes tend to occur, Sgt. Ken Gow said.

They will be on the lookout in particular for drivers and riders who are speeding, making illegal turns, or driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
Gow said three fatal motorcycle crashes occurred in Oceanside in 2011 and in 2012.

So far in 2013, no fatal motorcycle crashes have occurred in the city, and the number of motorcyclists injured in collisions in Oceanside has dropped 43 percent, he said.

INDIAN MOTORCYCLE REVEALS PRICING AS LEAD UP TO HISTORIC UNVEILING OF ALL-NEW 2014 INDIAN CHIEF AT STURGIS RALLY–
Highly Anticipated Details Make Clear that Authentic, Affordable Choice is Coming to American Motorcycles as Indian Motorcycle Makes its Debut at the World’s Largest Motorcycle Event.

Indian Motorcycle, America’s first motorcycle company, today continued its trip toward the historic unveiling of the completely new 2014 Indian Motorcycle. Following on the heels of the reveal of the all-new Thunder Stroke 111 engine on March 9 at Daytona Bike Week, Indian Motorcycle is announcing additional details as it accelerates toward the upcoming launch.

Staying true to its heritage, the revival of the Indian Motorcycle brand will debut with the introduction of the 2014 Indian Chief. First introduced in 1922, the legendary Indian Chief is historically the brand’s most popular selling model and is widely recognized by motorcycling enthusiasts around the world as one of the most iconic motorcycles ever produced. The Indian Chief is the flagship of the brand’s 112-year product lineup, and it has come to proudly represent the spirit of the Indian Motorcycle brand.

In addition to announcing the first model to come out of the Spirit Lake, Iowa production plant, pricing for the all-new 2014 Indian Chief will start at an MSRP of $18,999. Inventory is expected to be available at Indian Motorcycle dealerships throughout North America later in the year. Additional Indian Motorcycle dealerships will be opening across the country this summer to accommodate bike demand and service needs.

To view a short video clip in support of today’s announcement, or to see a silhouette image of the flagship 2014 Indian Chief, visit the Indian Motorcycle website.

The new Indian Chief will be revealed at the 73rd annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in Sturgis, South Dakota, which runs August 3-11, 2013. Specific details on the launch timing will be announced this summer. The Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, the world’s largest motorcycle rally, was started in 1936 by an Indian Motorcycle club, the famed Jackpine Gypsies. Indian Motorcycle is proud to reclaim that heritage and share the historic reveal of the 2014 Indian Chief with the rider community at the 2013 Sturgis Rally.

10TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP–While innovation has always been a hallmark of the World Championship of Custom Bike Building, the 10th anniversary of the show reached a new level. Held for the first time in Europe, at the Big Bike Europe Expo in Essen, Germany, the Championship showcased motorcycles, scooters, trikes and sidecar outfits.

Among the power units being employed by the 105 competitors were not only American V-twins, but also Italian singles and V-twins, Japanese multis and singles, a diesel, an engine from a Honda generator and even a 1920’s boat engine. With entries from 23 countries there were a total of 122 machines in five classes.

Of the 66 bikes competing in the Freestyle class, the 2013 World Championship title was taken by Medaza Cycles’ Rondine. Don Cronin and Michael O’Shea, the two Irish men responsible for the build created a one-off frame to carry the single-cylinder, 1971 Moto Guzzi Nuovo Falcone 500 engine. They were also responsible for hand-forming the aluminium bodywork and the heavily modified V-Rod swingarm, which is used as a girder style front fork, on the bike which previously took top honours at the 2013 Irish Motorcycle and Scooter show in Dublin.

Laurent Dutruel originally built Tribute to Hagakure to take to Bonneville and compete with during Speed Week. Although there is no official record for a fully rigid bike, Laurent took his bicycle style inspired, Buell engined machine to 208kph on the salt, and he has now followed that achievement with the motorcycle taking second place in the Freestyle class at this year’s World Championship.

Pete Pearson, of Rocket Bobs in the UK, describes his third placed bike, Gas’d Rat, as: “A rocket bobber built from a Shovel powered, fully redesigned, re-engineered and fabricated FXS.”

In a first for the Championship, a Taiwanese builder took a class win when Winston Yeh, of Rough Crafts, lifted the trophy in the Modified Harley class for his all black, Sportster-based Stealth Bullet, which featured a carbon gas tank and an oil-in-frame conversion.

Claiming the win for Italy in the Retro Modified class was Inglourious Basterds Cycles with Bastarda Senza Gloria a ‘48/’79 Pan/FX Shovel special fitted with the company’s own adjustable Springer front end.

Laurent Dutruel was called to the stage a second time when his turbo charged XR1200 was named the winner of the Street Performance class. Laurent now plans to ship the bike to the US in the summer so that he can ride from San Francisco to the Bonneville Salt Flats and once there attempt to set a record on the bike in the 1350 M-PBG class.

Completing the line-up of winners was Second City Customs from the UK, whose bike The Naughty Gentleman took S&S Cycle’s recognition award in the Production Manufacturer class.

Next year the 11th Annual World AMD World Championship of Custom Bike Building will again be staged the Big Bike Europe expo at Essen, Germany, 4 weeks earlier in the business cycle on 11th, 12th and 13th.

New for 2014 will be a cafe racer World Champion class.

CHICKEN HAWK RACING AND NEW YORK SAFETY TRACK ANNOUNCES THE CHR PRO SCHOOL– Chicken Hawk Racing and New York Safety Track today announced their collaboration on the CHR Performance Riding Option School (PRO). Its curriculum is designed to help motorcyclists of all experience levels take the next step up in their riding abilities.

The CHR PRO school will be taught exclusively on New York Safety Track’ s new 2.1-mile road course, which is located in Harpersfield, New York. Just outside Oneonta and 2.5 hours from New York City, the course features 18 turns, 450 feet of elevation change and a 40-foot-wide front straightaway nearly a half-mile long. Chicken Hawk Racing will also manage the facility’ s member-only track-day events.

The school’ s lead instructor, David Podolsky, is a championship-winning roadracer and founder of Chicken Hawk Racing, which designs and the manufactures tire warmers used by most AMA Pro Road Racing teams.

Podolsky, who has won 12 National titles in AMA Sports and AHRMA competition, and the school’ s seasoned staff is ready to show students the latest riding techniques. The school is accredited by the WERA and CCS racing organizations, so PRO graduates qualify to get their competition licenses by mastering the curriculum.

The CHR PRO School covers advanced body positioning optimized for each part of the track, as well as countersteering and braking and techniques that help get maximum drive off corners and set up passes. These skills will be learned during in-depth classroom sessions, on-track drills and one-on-one instruction aimed at identifying the factors that are holding each student back. Plenty of open practice time allows students to perfect these new techniques while progressing to the next level of their riding potential.

At just $360, Chicken Hawk Racing’s PRO school is an excellent value for any rider at every skill level. This exclusive program will be run only four times this year: June 7, July 19, August 9 and September 27. Additional information is available at NewYorkSafetyTrack.com or by calling 866-HOT-TIRE.

BIKERNET UNIVERSITY ENGLISH DEPARTMENT VOCABULARLY LESSON SPONSORED BY 2WHEELERS–genethliac juh-NETH-lee-ak, adjective:

of or pertaining to birthdays or to the position of the stars at one’s birth.

Really it must be admitted that only in England and America is there anybody who knows how to establish the genethliac theme and construct a horoscope.

— J. K. Huysmans, translated by Keene Wallace, Down There, 1891

It must be said, however, that the Arabs went much beyond the classical doctrines of Ptolemy’s Tetrabiblos and added to genethliac astrology, which was concerned with the conjunction of heavenly bodies at the moment of birth, a more popular science of interrogations and elections for every occasion in life.

— Charles Homer Haskins, The Renaissance of the Twelfth Century, 1955

Genethalic derives from the Greek root genéthli meaning “pertaining to one’s birth.” It is unrelated to the word gene.

IMMIGRATION LETTER TO THE EDITOR–Subject: For some reason, people have difficulty structuring their arguments when arguing against supporting the currently proposed immigration revisions. This lady made the argument pretty simple.
NOT printed in the Orange County Paper

From David LaBonte

My wife, Rosemary, wrote a wonderful letter to the editor of the OC Register which, of course, was not printed. So, I decided to “print” it myself by sending it out on the Internet. It was written in response to a series of letters to the editor in the Orange County Register:

Dear Editor:
So many letter writers have based their arguments on how this land is made up of immigrants. Ernie Lujan for one, suggests we should tear down the Statue of Liberty because the people now in question aren’t being treated the same as those who passed through Ellis Island and other ports of entry.

Maybe we should turn to our history books and point out to people like Mr. Lujan why today’s American is not willing to accept this new kind of immigrant any longer.

Back in 1900 when there was a rush from all areas of Europe to come to the United States , people had to get off a ship and stand in a long line in New York and be documented.
Some would even get down on their hands and knees and kiss the ground. They made a pledge to uphold the laws and support their new country in good and bad times.

They made learning English a primary rule in their new American households and some even changed their names to blend in with their new home.

They had waved good bye to their birth place to give their children a new life and did everything in their power to help their children assimilate into one culture.

Nothing was handed to them. No free lunches, no welfare, no labor laws to protect them. All they had were the skills and craftsmanship they had brought with them to trade for a future of prosperity.

Most of their children came of age when World War II broke out. My father fought alongside men whose parents had come straight over from Germany, Italy, France, and Japan .

None of these 1st generation Americans ever gave any thought about what country their parents had come from. They were Americans fighting Hitler, Mussolini and the Emperor of Japan. They were defending the United States of America as one people.

When we liberated France, no one in those villages was looking for the French-American or the German American or the Irish American. The people of France saw only Americans. And we carried one flag that represented one country.

Not one of those immigrant sons would have thought about picking up another country’s flag and waving it to represent who they were.

It would have been a disgrace to their parents who had sacrificed so much to be here. These immigrants truly knew what it meant to be an American. They stirred the melting pot into one red, white and blue bowl.

And here we are with a new kind of immigrant who wants the same rights and privileges. Only they want to achieve it by playing with a different set of rules, one that includes the entitlement card and a guarantee of being faithful to their mother country.

I’m sorry, that’s not what being an American is all about. I believe that the immigrants who landed on Ellis Island in the early 1900’s deserve better than that for all the toil, hard work and sacrifice in raising future generations to create a land that has become a beacon for those legally searching for a better life. I think they would be appalled that they are being used as an example by those waving foreign country flags.

And for that suggestion about taking down the Statue of Liberty, it happens to mean a lot to the citizens who are voting on the immigration bill. I wouldn’t start talking about dismantling the United States just yet.

(Signed)
Rosemary LaBonte

NO HELMETS REQUIRED FOR ELIO VEHICLE OCCUPANTS–?BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Drivers of the Elio, a three-wheeled vehicle to be manufactured in Shreveport, won’t have to wear helmets.

The Louisiana House gave final passage to the bill by Shreveport Rep. Barbara Norton with a 90-1 vote Tuesday, sending it to the governor’s desk.
Because the Elio has three wheels, it’s considered a motorcycle under federal and state safety regulations.

Norton’s bill modifies the definition of autocycle to include enclosed motorcycles with a roll cage. That change means Elio occupants won’t have to wear helmets or get a special “M” endorsement on their driver’s license as required of motorcyclists.
Officials with Elio Motors, located in the former General Motors plant in Shreveport, said the helmet requirement could harm sales.

More Motorcycle and Scooter Riders On the Road on Monday, June 17th This Year– The 22nd annual worldwide Ride to Work Day is expected to be one of the largest-ever, according to Ride to Work, the non-profit organization that coordinates this annual event. In the United States, over 80 million cars and light trucks are used for daily commuting, and only about 200,000 motorcycles and scooters are a usually part of this mix.

On Ride to Work Day a much higher number of America’s 8,000,000 cycles and scooters are ridden to work. Some estimates put the numbers of added riders at over 1,000,000. Studies have shown that across equal distances, commuting rider can reach their destinations more quickly — in up to 20% less time than those using automobiles — and that motorcycles and scooters consume less resources per person per mile, and that they take up less space on roads.

Motorcycle and scooter riders seek improved employer support for this form of transportation, and more public and government awareness about the societally-positive benefits of riding. The Ride to Work website includes forum areas, merchandise, information, and free promotional support materials.

BIKERNET MEDICAL CENTER FLAWED FINDINGS–Surprising Reason Why Women Live Longer
Among most animal species, humans included, females tend to live longer than males– A number of theories has been advanced over the years to explain this gender-based survival advantage.

Now, new research from Japan suggests a reason that can be tested: women’s immune systems age more slowly. A research team at Tokyo Medical and Dental University analyzed blood samples from 356 healthy men and women between the ages of 20 and 90. In particular, they measured levels of white cells and cytokines, molecules that interact with immune system cells to regulate the body’s response to disease.

As expected from prior research, the investigators found that white blood cells declined with age, but they also observed two key differences between the sexes: in men they recorded a steeper decline of T-cells that protect against infection and B-cells which secrete antibodies. They also found that the expected age-related increase in natural killer cells and CD4T-cells, which attack invaders, rose at a higher rate in women than in men. Elsewhere, similar findings have been seen in mice. The study was published on May 15, 2013 in Immunity & Ageing.

My take? This interesting new finding may help explain an age-old mystery. We know from studies in rodents that the cells in the female body seem to repair damage better than those in male bodies.

Women also have a survival advantage because they develop cardiovascular disease about 10 years later in life than men, often in their 70s and 80s rather than their 50s and 60s. Women may also have an evolutionary based biological advantage because the female role in reproduction is vital to survival – not only do women give birth, but they nurse their babies and care for them during their early years.

Men’s role in reproduction is limited and, for that reason, longevity in men may not be as vital to the continuation of the species. While women may benefit from qualities inherent in their genetics, none of these natural advantages guarantees longevity against poor lifestyle choices.

A case in point: smoking rates and the risk of lung cancer have been rising in women, and lung cancer has surpassed breast cancer as the leading cause of cancer deaths among women in the U.S.

Some 78 days until Speed Week. Time flies when man is attempting to make a dream become reality. Speaking of dreams? Don’t forget to check out the scantily clad sweethearts in the Cantina’s Sunday Post.

It’s the end of May and all is well. Seems the year just started a few days ago? The El Mirage meet was held last weekend, we’re waiting on reports?

The past couple of weeks we’ve made major progress in our quest for speed, via the 124-inch Twin Cam, Turbocharged Raycer. Our local motorcycle technician, Doctor Willie has performed miracle after miracle as we detail the hot rod, while preparing for the starting line the first week of August on the Bonneville Salt Flats during Speed Week where we’ll make our first official attempt at a safe clean pass on the ever elusive, sometimes slippery salt.

Late last week we contacted Pro Charger and ordered an intercooler we’re now modifying to mount on the front legs of the one off Rick Tedder, R/T Performance chassis. With the expertise of our own pro rider/welder Toby, we’ve fabricated aluminum angle that’s been welded on the top and bottom of the intercooler. Steel tabs were fabricated and will be welded to the frame rails to attach the intercooler. The inlet side will be modified for an easier air transition from the Aerocharger Series 66 turbo to the intercooler. Willie and Toby have also rebuilt the backing plate for an air-tight seal between the air plenum and 62 Horse Power Inc. throttle body.

The front calipers are now bolted in place awaiting a custom brake line from Deering Industries Inc. in Long Beach, Ca. specializing in Aircraft hardware, stainless steel hose and fittings.

Just after the crack of dawn, I placed a call to Air Tech to check on a ¼-fairing. Early June we’ll venture south to visit the Air Tech Streamlining facilities in San Marcos and bring you an inside report on the fastest body-work in the west.

Details such has fire sheathing covering the electrics are mandatory.

Bonneville 2013 will see dreams and reality meet head on.

Thanks….With one helleva lot of help from my family and Industry friends….Thanks, Thanks, Thanks.

We’re on track for a stellar year on the street and on the Bonneville Salt Flats.

RETROPHONIC 4 LINER NOTES–
To repeat, this is it! The last Arrows’ album you can hold in your hands. It’ll only be download albums after this final volume of my Retrophonic series. The first download album is the re-release of Restless In L.A. with the original cover idea.

Just a few words about some of the tunes: “Los Cabos” ties the series together with an instrumental version. “War Path” celebrates the 50th anniversary of my first record and it’s only the first remake. Since the Arrows’ instrumentals have always been more popular with my fans, I’ve put together a whole album’s worth (16 tunes) followed by 9 vocals. Even the vocals should be a bit interesting with titles like “Shape of Things to Come”, “(Ghost) Riders in the Sky”, “The Glory Stompers” plus two Buddy Holly tributes: “Think It Over” and “Oh Buddy, We Miss You So” (if you have volume 2 of this series, please note that this version is in a different key, it has some lyric changes and I re-did the entire vocal).

I’m only charging $10 and that includes the postage and bubble mailer. But wait, there’s more: a new mailing label, an autograph and a lyric sheet (oh well, it seemed funny when I thought of it!). You can also use Paypal.
Thank you for your support!

BAR TO DISBARR JUDGE FOR ETHICS VIOLATIONS–

–Associated Press

FORT LAUDERDALE — The Florida Bar is recommending that a former Broward County judge be disbarred for ethical transgressions while presiding over a murder trial.Ana Gardiner resigned from the bench in 2010 while under investigation for having a close relationship with a prosecutor who was trying the case before her.

It later emerged that Gardiner had exchanged more than 900 phone calls and 471 text messages with the prosecutor during the trial.??A judicial referee recommended a one-year suspension of Gardiner’s law license.??But the Bar has asked the Florida Supreme Court to disbar her entirely, arguing that she refused to accept responsibility and showed no remorse.

Gardiner has 30 days to respond. She has said she never discussed the murder case with the prosecutor during their out-of-court contacts.

Brough Shakes The Salt & The Sand with Ace Cafe London!–Ace Cafe London is thrilled and privileged to once again be able to confirm being part of, and supporting, the Brough Superior Team heading out to break and reset land speed records in multiple classes, in August, on the famous Bonneville Salt Flats, USA, with two motorcycles, a “Retro” and a “Pendine”, based on the iconic 1927 SS100, a machine sharing heritage and fame with Col. T.E. Lawrence – “Lawrence of Arabia”.

Brough were on the salt previously in 1949 with a streamlined machine ridden and crashed by Noel Pope – he vowed to “never ride a streamline again”, and on returning to Bonneville in 2011 the new, unstreamlined, Brough Superior SS100 Retro, with a specially tuned J.A.P. V-Twin engine, running on “pump” fuel, clocked two runs, at 127 & 122 mph respectively, giving a mean average speed of 124.98mph and breaking the MA 1350-A-VG speed record!

The 2013 Brough Superior Team, much larger than in previous years, includes riders Eric Patterson, Alan Cathcart and Henry Cole, all flying the flag for England!

In addition, over the weekend of 22nd & 23rd June, the Brough Superior Team, together with Ace Cafe London and support crew, will be racing on Pendine Sands, Wales, the historic home of land speed racing in the UK and where, in 1928, a specially prepared SS100, built and ridden by George Brough, came first and subsequently gave rise to a limited number of very fast, and now very rare, high performance “Pendine Racers” being produced at the Nottingham factory.

An SS100 Pendine Racer is currently on display at the Ace, courtesy of Mark Upham, CEO of Brough Superior Motorcycles Ltd, who confirms that Brough, made in England, looks forward to racing and to setting new records at both Pendine and Bonneville.

NEW YORK Man caught with TWO bullets too many– ALBANY — State police have charged a 31-year-old Hudson Valley driver with a misdemeanor after he was pulled over and found with two more bullets in his handgun magazine than allowed under New York’s new gun control law.

Troopers say Greg–ory Dean Jr. of Hope–well Junction was stopped for an inadequate light on his license plate about 9:45 p.m. Sunday in New Lebanon. They say their investigation showed the semi-automatic on the passenger seat was a legally possessed gun but its magazine contained nine rounds, not seven as required since April 15.

OWN THE NIGHT WITH HARLEY-DAVIDSON ACCESSORY LED LIGHTING–New h-d.com/store Website Offers 48 Brilliant LED Lighting Choices.

Motorcycling on dimly lit back roads presents significant challenges, from lurking deer to poorly marked corners and inattentive drivers. According to engineers at Harley-Davidson, installing LED motorcycle lighting is the fastest, easiest way to enhance visibility for harsh night-riding conditions.

Harley-Davidson Genuine Motor Accessories offers 48 LED lighting accessories, including headlamps, auxiliary lamps, tail lamps and turn signals for almost all late-model Harley-Davidson motorcycles, and has grouped them together on its new h-d.com/store website at http://www.harley-davidson.com/shop/led-motorcycle-lights .

That page also features graphic and video demonstrations of the dramatic difference between incandescent and Harley-Davidson LED lighting performance.

The output of Harley-Davidson LED headlamps and auxiliary lamps is brighter, whiter in color, and provides a superior light pattern compared to Original Equipment incandescent lamps. The solid-state LED lamps feature a shock- and vibration-resistant assembly that mounts into the existing light housing.

Installation uses the factory headlamp wiring – no external ballast or complicated wire harness is required. The brilliant, fast-acting LED arrays used in Harley-Davidson accessory tail lamps and turn signals enhance the visibility of the motorcycle during day and night riding.

LAWYER CHALLENGES HORN-BLOWING TICKET– A Central Florida lawyer wants a De-Land police officer to show up in court to explain why he skipped a traffic hearing after pulling him over for “impolitely” honking his horn.

It started in February when DeLand Detective Christopher Jusick stopped Michael Lambert and gave him a warning for honking his horn at him after the traffic light turned green. Lambert, a criminal defense lawyer, told the officer he wanted a ticket instead of a warning. The attorney then subpoenaed the officer to appear at hearing. He didn’t show and now Lambert has filed a motion ordering Jusick to explain why he shouldn’t be held in contempt.

TENNESSSEE Town says its traffic cameras not missed– RED BANK — Now that traffic enforcement cameras have been gone from a Hamilton County city for four months, officials are saying just how much they are not missed.

Red Bank ended its contract in January. Citizen complaints drove a 4-1 city commission vote to end the contract after six years and 69,000 citations.??The Chattanooga Times Free Press reported that officials said the number of traffic crashes hasn’t increased, there have been fewer tickets issued and anecdotal evidence indicates there is more traffic in the city.

Mayor John Roberts said people continue to tell him they’re glad the cameras are gone. Roberts said the cameras made the city appear unwelcoming.

BIKEKNET INTERNATIONAL EDITOR IN THAILAND–Day 5 in Pats and getting the routine going. Got up and out a little earlier today to visit some Harley shops.

I just received my tax return for 2013 back from the IRS. for review.
It puzzles me!!!

They are questioning how many dependents I claimed. I guess it was because of my response to the question: “List all dependents?”

I replied: 12 million illegal immigrants; 3 million crack heads; 42 million unemployed people on food stamps, 2 million people in over 243 prisons;
half of Mexico; and 535 persons in the U.S. House and Senate.”

Evidently, this was NOT an acceptable answer.

BAMMER RACING UPDATE–Nutley, NJ: Larry “Drums” Brancaccio and Bammer Racing shook out all the cobwebs for their first event of the season.

Not only did they perform with their standard flash, they made the quick eight out of 15 of America’s finest nitro powered Top Fuel monsters at the NHRA -Harley-Davidson Drag Racing Series “The Mickey Mart Rewards Cavalcade of Stars presented by Budweiser” at Summit Racing Equipment Motorsports Park, Norwalk, Oh,

Crew chief, Michael Hopkins had taken time to focus on some new tune up combinations and remained hopeful that they’d done their job at home in prep work, but every racer and crew chief knows the proof of all the time, hard work and late nights comes down to a few precious seconds on the track. As always the crew and management at Summit Racing Equipment Motorsports Park was right on top of things.

“We were thrilled with a 8 quick eight position for eliminations on Sunday. Things were going well and we got a little squirrely off the line against Douglas Horne. We knew he’s a hard competitor to get at the lights, but we ended up going to the center line and were disqualified by hitting a the foam blocks. We’ll disappointed but ready to go racing again,” said Hopkins.

Illegal Kidneys Are ‘Sold Every Hour’ As Human Organ Trade Booms –

By Kyrsty Hazell, Huffington Post

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has revealed that more than one human organ is illegally purchased every hour worldwide.
Trade has risen to worrying heights warns WHO, despite a small decline in illegal organ donation in 2006-2007, and the organisation estimate that more than 10,000 black market operations (using illegally purchased organs) take place every year, reports the Guardian.

Kidneys are currently the most in-demand organ (accounting for 75% of overall trade), with demand believed to be fuelled by the rise in diet-related conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure and heart problems.

Figures released by WHO show that of the 106,879 organs transplanted (legally and illegally) in 2010, around 73,179 were kidneys.
High levels of poverty across the world mean there is never a shortage of volunteers, with some illegal traders luring donors with the promise of up to £5,000 in exchange of a kidney via a speedy operation – all in just 10 days.

It’s estimated that black market traders pay cash-strapped donors around £3,200 for their kidney – and sell them for approximately £128,000 to wealthy patients in need.

Responding to the worrying statistics, Luc Noel from WHO, told The Guardian: “There is a growing need for transplants and big profits to be made.
“It’s ever growing, it’s a constant struggle. The stakes are so big, the profit that can be made so huge, that the temptation is out there.”

Noel also believes the lack of law enforcement in certain countries is making it easy for traders to exploit poor people.

“While commercial transplantation is now forbidden by law in China, that’s difficult to enforce; there’s been a resurgence there in the last two or three years.

“Foreigners from the Middle East, Asia and sometimes Europe come and are paying $100,000 (£63,000) to $200,000 (£127,000) for a transplant. Often they are Chinese expats or patients of Chinese descent.”

For nearly 50 years, Cycle News has covered the sport of motorcycling with a weekly magazine. Now, for the price of a regular magazine, you can get online access to all 2,300+ back issues of Cycle News.

“It’s amazing to have almost 50 years of Cycle News at your fingertips,” says Paul Carruthers, longtime editor of the weekly publication. “The staff has always had the archives available in bound volumes to turn to since day one. Now we’re giving that same opportunity to the rest of the world.”

Docurama Premieres the Exhilarating Documentary “CHARGE” in Theaters Nationwide This Week–From the director of Faster and Fastest (Mark Neale), and narrated by actor and motorcycle enthusiast Ewan McGregor (Star Wars, Trainspotting), CHARGE is proof that maniacs on motorcycles can be a force for global good.

Every screening begins with the 3-minute short film SOLAR ROADWAYS from GE FOCUS FORWARD and is followed by a pre-taped Q&A with Mr. Neale

BIKERNET PARENTING SEMINAR–
A father watched his young daughter playing in the garden. He smiled as he reflected on how sweet and pure his little girl was. Tears formed in his eyes as he thought about her seeing the wonders of nature through such innocent eyes. Suddenly she just stopped and stared at the ground.

He went over to her to see what work of God had captured her attention. He noticed she was looking at two spiders mating. ‘Daddy, what are those two spiders doing?’ she asked.

“They’re mating,” her father replied.

“What do you call the spider on top? she asked. A Daddy Longlegs, her father answered. So, the other one is a Mommy Longlegs?” The little girl asked.

As his heart soared with the joy of such a cute and innocent question he replied, No dear. Both of them are Daddy Longlegs.

The little girl, looking a little puzzled, thought for a moment, then lifted her foot and stomped them flat. Well, she said, “That may be OK in California, but we’re not having any of that shit in Texas.”

QUICK, BREAK OUT THE WHISKEY—Life is too unbelievable. I picked up a copy of the Week magazine and discovered that insurance companies added a new clause to their building policies. If you didn’t pay extra for terrorist attacks, and own a business in Boston, you could be screwed. Incredible.

Check the Pigford ruling. Clinton tried to help black farmers who were discriminated against by giving them bucks, then Obama wanted more votes so he expanded the issue to encompass, Hispanics, Native Americans, and women. Of course it’s a government run program so it went terribly wrong. Folks who have never owned a farm filled out the paperwork and got a check. Incredible.

Okay, so I ordered the Belly Tank to build our streamlined trike, and I have a connection for a frame builder, plus I spoke to Ron at Paughco and his team wants to be involved with the frame for the driveline.

We are going to run a JIMS 135-inch Twin Cam engine and a JIMS 6-speed transmission and go to town. You will see the whole enchilada come together on Bikernet. This is going to be exciting as hell.

Ride Forever,

–Bandit
