There I was minding my own business. My to-do list was moderately packed with creative endeavors, bike build projects, Bonneville builds, book-writing schemes, and anything to help keep motorcycling freedom alive. Then the phone rang. It was Don Whalen, rare antique motorcycle curator.
“I need to make a run north to deliver a 1942 Salisbury to our secret motorcycle collection location,” Don said, “but that’s not all, we need to head farther north to buy a rare, one of five, 1914 Fielbach Limited, and bring it back to Los Angeles.”
These clandestine endeavors involve secret locations, weapons, and piles of cash. Of course, I said, “I’m in, and packed a small bag.” We drove over 2,500 miles in less than three days, with two days at over 1,000 miles, and 16 hours behind the wheel.
Let’s hit the news, while I mentally sort out all the big candy issues, fake antiques, stolen motorcycles, integrity and bad blood. I could write a book around the high-dollar antique motorcycle market. There’s just not enough time in a day.

BILL INTRODUCED IN CALIFORNIA TO REGULATE LANE SHARING–No sooner had the California Highway Patrol published guidelines on how to safely maneuver your motorcycle between lanes of slow-moving traffic, than SB 350 was introduced by State Senator Jim Beall (D-San Jose) to codify the rules into law.
California is the only state that allows “lane sharing” or “lane splitting,” precisely because there are no laws against it; though officers have a variety of charges they can levy against a reckless rider such as unsafe lane change or too fast for conditions.
Beall’s bill would restrict the practice by prohibiting motorcycles from splitting lanes unless specifically allowed; “…when a highway has been divided into three or more clearly marked lanes for traffic traveling in the same direction, a person operating a motorcycle shall not pass another vehicle in a portion of a lane occupied by that vehicle unless the following conditions are met:
(1) The passing occurs during traffic congestion.
(2) The passing occurs at a safe speed.”
Following furious feedback from motorcyclists opposed to over-regulating an act that 87% report doing almost daily during crowded commutes, Sen. Beall soon pulled his proposal and turned it into a two-year bill for future reconsideration.
In the meantime, although ABATE of California did not initiate the measure, the group will work with Beall to amend the language, and vows “…our goal is to ultimately submit a bill that addresses the concerns of the motorcycle community; a bill that can be supported and endorsed by the ABATE membership. If the final bill doesn’t meet ABATE’s requirements, ABATE will vigorously oppose the bill and try to kill it.”

DOCTOR HAMSTER COMES TO BIKERNET MEDICAL CENTER AS A CERTIFIED CONSULTANT–Fiber is too often overlooked in the average American’s diet.

NORTON HEADQUARTERS ALMOST AS COOL AS BIKERNET’S–Norton has purchased a 26 acre countryside estate from British Airways to use as their headquarters. The area is located within the Donington Park Grand Prix Circuit race complex which is less than a mile from Norton’s current manufacturing plant.
The main building on the property is Donington Hall which was built in 1790. The 40,000 square foot building has a grand entrance with remarkable architectural styling. The inside of the structure features modern office and meeting facilities. Located behind Donington Hall is the newly constructed 45,000 square foot Hastings Hall which will eventually house Norton’s production facilities.
The Donington Grand Prix Circuit complex will host the 2013 rounds of the World and British Superbike championship. It also has scheduled world class road racing, vintage racing and rock concerts for this year. The Grand Prix Collection museum, which has the world’s largest collection of Formula One cars, is also on the site.

With no debate, the Florida House on Tuesday moved to repeal a law that created an international stir and threatened to undermine a key component of the state’s tourism industry.
The House is expected to vote today to reverse a 2012 law that required Canadians and other foreign visitors in Florida to obtain an international driving permit before they could operate a vehicle. The Senate is scheduled to take up the bill Tuesday and send it to Gov. Rick Scott for immediate approval.
The law took effect on Jan. 1 — at the height of Florida’s winter tourist season — and caught thousands of Canadian visitors by surprise, forcing them to scramble to obtain the driving permits, which are only issued in their country.
The impact on Canadians was particularly significant since they represent the largest cohort of foreign tourists who come to Florida each year.
As the controversy took hold, Florida law enforcement officials announced they would not enforce the law, in part, because it appeared to violate international treaties governing driving rights in foreign countries.
Lawmakers said the legislation was originally passed to help Florida law enforcement officers more easily determine whether a foreign visitor had a valid driver license. But they have moved quickly in their annual session to repeal it after realizing the potential negative impact on foreign visitors and tourism in the state.
“From time to time, we will pass legislation and find out there were some unintended consequences,” House Transportation and Highway Safety Chairman Daniel Davis, R-Jacksonville, told the House.
He said the quick passage of the repeal would send a message to the Canadians and other tourists “that our state is open for business and we want to make sure we let them know we will roll out the red carpet.”
After the House gave preliminary approval to the bill (HB 7059), Rep. Ben Albritton, R-Wauchula, who had formally apologized to Canadian officials for the passage of the 2012 law, said he felt “relieved” that lawmakers were moving to correct the problem.

HELLS ANGELS TRADEMARK LAWSUIT–The legendary Harley-Davidson riding Hells Angels have settled a suit amicably out of court with apparel company Dyrdek Enterprises for jacking their logo according to sources today. The clothing company was accused of commandeering the iconic logo for use with their Young and Reckless clothing line.
Dyrdek is owned by MTV star Rob Dyrdek and his cousin Chris “Drama” Pfaff. According to legal documents that have been filed in California, the parties resolved their differences out of court; however, the terms of the settlement have not been disclosed.

UNCLE MONKEY ON LOOKING FOR SOMETHING NEW–How much is that little doggie in the window? I’m always kicking tires looking for something new and exciting. Even if I don’t end up pulling the trigger, I get a good feel for what the market price is for things.
I’m loosely looking for a bagger as a next project something I can haul Mrs. Monkey around on the back of – Snow White is a one person kind of gal. Since I don’t ride stock I need something that is priced well enough that I won’t break the bank customizing it.
My usual M.O. is to buy a salvage bike. A few have come up. One was a late Twin Cam that only needed a saddlebag and fresh paint. The price was right but my bank account funds were too low. A second twin came up, but it needed everything including frame, engine mounts and cases. Ironically it sold for more then the first.
The first bike would have been a good bike to pick up because I could recoup some of the cost of extended bags, trick fairings and trunk by selling off the good stock parts. The second bike was way too damaged to be anything more then a paper weight but if a bike had all the sheet metal and plastic damaged and need to be replaced and it was priced right I wouldn’t feel bad about having to buy new.
The next up the list is finding a bike with a blown motor. Often we push our bikes harder than we should throwing rods, dropping valves. Facing an expensive repair bill some choose to simply finance a new bike. If I can find a cheap bike I can always drop in another Evo 113-inch, and start building. The last option is to buy a complete running bike.
Recently a clean Evo RoadKing came up that would be a nice platform to build from. The year was right; the mileage was high enough that the bike needed a complete rebuild. The problem was the price. They want the same price as hundreds of two and three-year-old Road Kings with a third of the miles.
I would like to buy local, I encourage people to buy local, support local but when the price is that far out of whack I have to move and continue kicking tires.

NEW YORK EMPLOYES THE SNITCH FACTOR–Yesterday I received this from one of my law enforcements contacts regarding an announcement from Governor Cuomos’s Division of Criminal Justice Services.
Governor Cuomo has dug his feet in and is now employing Gestapo like tactics to encourage NY citizens to report on their fellow NY citizens thru financial incentives that are derived from the taxes of New Yorkers.

The reward for “turning in” or “reporting” your neighbors for suspected “illegal” activity regarding the regulations put in-place by the recently enacted NY SAGE Act is $500.00 for each individual case.
This is the State’s way of enforcing the regulations that most, if not all, gun owners have publicly said they would not comply with.
This is eerily reminiscent of 1934 Germany.
How many brutal dictators can we all name who have taken similar measures of turning the people against one another in the past 100 years.

The tip line also allows for information to be submitted via text – individuals can text GUNTIP and their message to CRIMES (274637). While the state will provide the administrative support and fund the rewards, the investigation and validity of the tip will be up to each local department.??
To spread the word about this free resource, New York State is planning a comprehensive campaign, including public service announcements that will air on television and radio stations across Upstate.
The tip line can provide your agencies with another avenue for receiving intelligence about crimes being committed in your jurisdictions. This initiative is designed for communities where no tip lines are in place and is not meant to replace existing gun tip lines.
Here’s how the tip line operates: The New York State Police staff the tip line 24 hours a day. Upon receiving a call, troopers will solicit as much information as possible regarding a firearm tip, while allowing the individual to remain anonymous. The caller will be informed that this program is not the traditional gun buyback program but rather is focused on identifying individuals who are carrying an illegal firearm.
The State Police will in turn contact the appropriate police agency with the lead to initiate an investigation. Staff from the Division of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) will follow up with that agency to determine the validity of the lead. Once the investigation is completed, the police agency would convey to DCJS the outcome of the investigation.??If the information leads to an arrest for the illegal possession of a firearm, the anonymous “tipster” will be awarded $500.
DCJS staff will handle all of the financial transactions. State Police staff will explain the program in its entirety upon notifying an agency that a lead has been generated for their jurisdiction. SINGER DAVID ALLEN COE INJURED IN ACCIDENT– Police cited country music singer David Allen Coe for running a red light before being struck by a tractor-trailer near downtown Ocala. A message on his website says 73-year-old Coe is “recuperating from his accident and will be OK.”
His agent told the newspaper that Coe’s concerts in St. Louis and Louisville, Ky., have been canceled. Ocala police say Coe was driving a 2011 Suburban when he ran a red light, striking another vehicle.

Local residents were stunned, as a community spokesman said: “We’re all shocked; we never knew we had a library.”

FINK’S SUPREME COURT HEARING SET--inks’
The fate of the Gold Coast Chapter (Queensland, Australia) of the Finks motorcycle club will be determined by the end of the year.
The Supreme Court this morning set down a seven-week hearing to take place after mid-October to decide if the Gold Coast Chapter of the Finks will be declared a “criminal organization”.
It follows the High Court of Australia yesterday upholding the Queensland Government’s Criminal Organization Act.
If the police application succeeds they will be able to ban Gold Coast Finks from wearing colors, stop them from operating businesses together and prevent them from gathering at their clubhouse. Any breach of the action and they could be jailed.
Supreme Court Justice David Boddice said he as well as legal representatives for the Finks and police would need time to review the implications of the High Court’s decision.
Potts Lawyers’ Julia Jasper said there was still uncertainty if additional material would be required for the hearing and if the police’s application would be amended.
The matter will come up for further review in the courts on April 4.
Police last year made an application to the Supreme Court under the new Criminal Organization Act to have the Gold Coast Chapter of the Finks declared a criminal organization.
But the application was halted when the legislation was unsuccessfully challenged in the High Court by the Finks.
Police have indicated if this application succeeds they may move against other motorcycle clubs and criminal organizations.
High-ranking members of the Finks reacted with disbelief to the High Court’s decision.
Sergeant-at-arms of the Gold Coast chapter, Greg Keating, yesterday spent hours with the club’s powerful legal team led by Potts Lawyers and Sydney constitutional expert Peter Kulevski.
Keating was stunned by the High Court decision and vowed the club would not give in.
“We’ll keep fighting,” he said. “That’s all we can do.”
He arrived at the Southport office just after the 9am decision and was in conference with the legal team until midday. Other Finks members attended briefly but it was left to Keating to brief the club.
Senior Finks across the country were reeling after the decision was handed down.
A Finks spokesman said the club would work closely with its legal team and was preparing for the next stage.
“We don’t really know what happens next. We will take this one step at a time,” the spokesman said.
“It isn’t over. People need to realize this isn’t a law against bike clubs — it is a law that can be used against anyone.
“This affects all clubs. We knew that this was inevitable. It’s the third time clubs have fought this in the High Court and eventually (the legislation) had to be successful.”

I’m looking at finishing up the Mudflap Girl over the weekend (you will see the feature). We will be testing Centramatic Wheel Balancers and writing a tech.
Then I’ll be jamming over to Bennett’s Performance for a final installment on his 106-inch Twin Cam S&S build. We will also cover his D&D exhaust install, and a new Rivera Clutch addition to the drivetrain.
We have a new tech from the Tail Gunner on L A Choppers product install. And of course the monthly Bill Bish Coast to Coast legislative update.
While in Daytona Gary Maurer called me. He has wired bikes for year, and when we were building the Bikernet/Cycle Source Sweeps bike we supplied him with a Wire Plus custom bike wiring loom. Since he is comfortable with his own system, he didn’t use it, but recently he built another bike and decided to give it a shot. “It was amazing,” Gary said. “It made wiring a bike so much easier and more organized.” He is going to send us Wire Plus wiring tech in the near future.
Over the weekend we will tear down Bob Bitchin’s new FXR and haul some elements to Tony’s Worco powder-coating facility. And to top it off, we will start to work on the crashed 1928 Shovelhead. “It will be sharper than ever before,” Wrench said. He scored a taillight from the ‘20s. We will reshape the rear fender and build new fender rails.
We have two road tests coming from Daytona, one Harley by Paul Garson, and Prince Najar rode a new Victory. We will deliver their stellar impressions and photography shortly. Wait, there’s more: Garage Company is having an open house on Saturday in Inglewood, and Roller Derby Girls will compete in the dome next to the Queen Mary Saturday night. Sunday the MC swap meet will rock the Veteran’s stadium.
So, as you can see, we don’t have time to stop, except for her and whiskey. Have a terrific weekend.
