Hey,

I wish I knew which way to turn, but damn, the sun is shining, and my Mudflap Girl FXR is close to the road once more. We may be starting on our new Bonneville project in a week to 10 days, and I’m so close to wrapping up another Chance book and starting another, I can taste the ink on the paper.

Here’s how Enzo Ferrari described the process of building a car in 1964: In the first act of his labor, the maker conceives what his creature is to be: he dreams of it and sees it in detail, and he lays down the plan of work, which he entrusts to a band of helpers who share his passion.

A racing car, in fact, does not necessarily come into being as the creation of a superior mind, but is always the compendium of the common unflagging and enthralling work of a team of men fired by a common enthusiasm. There follows its construction, which must nearly always be done in record time, although it never takes less than six to eight months of feverish work. The next stage is the assembly of the car and its testing, which is the most delicate, the most engrossing and the most dramatic phase…

IS THERE A NEW LIGHTWEIGHT BIKE ON THE HARLEY HORIZON?–The rumor mill is a dangerous place to stick your hand, but occasionally you pull out a gem. Case in point: IronWorks staffers recently caught wind that there’s something new on the drawing boards at the H-D Motor Company.

Remember the Buell Blast? These 500cc singles are still valued as great street bikes by seasoned commuters and daily riders, who mourned it’s passing when H-D decided to let Buell go in 2009. The Blast filled an important role in the Harley market strategy, since it’s low displacement allowed it to be used for the Riders Edge classes, an MSF certified riding course that’s offered through Harley dealerships around the country.

But with the Blast fleet out of production and the current ranks thinning, We have to wonder what Rider’s Edge students will be riding a year or three from now. All the Sportster models that Harley offers are saddled with too much displacement to be allowed as riding course-ready bikes, leading to questions about a single cylinder Blast-like model to fill this gap. While details are as hazy as the oil mist from an open crankcase breather, sources have confirmed that something big (or actually, rather small) is in the works.

With the current popularity of cafe and street fighter bikes, as well as the disappearance of the XR1200 Sportster on American shores, we can’t help but speculate. Perhaps the Blast will return with new tooling and updates? Maybe a sporty 500cc single in a more classic guise will be in our future. Hell, I’d be happy to see an XR500 single, with tall shocks and wide bars to boot. Or maybe, just maybe, the Motor Company will blast us with something we haven’t even imagined. One can only wonder…

AUSTRALIA: High Court rejects Finks challenge on anti-biker laws– The failed High Court bid by the Finks motorcycle club will boost the state’s push for other laws cracking down on the “Mr Bigs of the underworld”, according to Queensland Attorney-General Jarrod Bleijie.

Mr Bleijie said the failed bid to ‘tear-up’ the Newman Government’s criminal organization laws gave impetus to new laws targeting unexplained wealth.

“The High Court decision today will essentially mean that Queensland, with the Criminal Organization Act, the Unexplained Wealth laws we are going to be introducing and mandatory sentencing, Queensland will be the jurisdiction with the toughest laws in Australia with respect to anti-biker laws,” Mr Bleijie said.

“Not only does it allow the government and the police the resources to continue to go after organized crime and bikie gangs in Queensland, but it also shows the Federal Government that the state is best placed to deal with these types of legislation and laws,” he said.

“So this will really now compliment the government’s existing legislation but also future legislation in terms of tackling the ‘Mr Bigs’ of the underworld, in terms of unexplained wealth laws, serious drug trafficking offences and mandatory sentencing for firearm offences.”

This morning’s decision is the first time that state laws aimed at criminalizing motorcycle clubs have been upheld on constitutional grounds, after the Hells Angels in NSW and Finks in South Australia mounted successful challenges previously.

The decision clears the way for Queensland police to resume their attempt to target members of the Finks Surfers Paradise chapter, whom they allege meet to “engage in and conspire to engage in serious criminal activity”, with controversial anti-association orders.

The countdown to Bonneville Speed Week, 2013 continues at a blazing pace with 146 days until Tech Inspection Thursday and Friday, Aug. 8 & 9, racing starts Saturday the 10th at the crack of dawn, just after the riders meeting. For the next week from day light until sunset you think, eat and sleep with one goal in mind. Go safe, go straight and roll faster than you have ever rolled.

Life started in May of 1944, in 1965-66-67 fought a war, later in life sold horse shit, fly swatters, repossessed coffins and out of tune bongo drums, organized a weekend orgy, converted a virgin and emptied a packed saloon. After all of that shit, finally discovered Bonneville in 2006 on my ‘95 inch 2004 Dyna while rollin’ coast to coast. Unloaded the gear off of my hot rod, passed tech and recorded two passes in the Run What Ya Brung class at BUB Speed Week, 121.966 followed by a 134.361 and the hook was set.

With 146 days until Speed Week we’re planning the next move. The men at Colorado Custom are taking a look at shift linkage and rear sets during the next few days while designing composite rotors, wheels and handle bar sets for street and land speed racing.

   

Here’s a little history about Colorado Custom, Marc Susman and his wife Mina.

In 2002, Classic and Custom Ride (CCR) was founded in Anaheim California by former drag racer Marc Susman. Driving his own nitro burning Chevy Nova, he was hard to beat. Susman later drove the Jungle Jim Liberman and Atlas Oil Tool AA/FC funny cars. Drag racing gave Susman the ability to make split second decisions with ease and accuracy, a trait he still uses in business today. CCR’s principal purpose was to design, program and machine complete private label motorcycle wheels.

Utilizing 3-axis machining techniques, CCR was able to transform otherwise ordinary wheels in works of art. With CCR’s attention to detail and unmatched programming, it be came easy to see they would be around for a long time to come. As the original manufacture for such brands as Renegade, Wicked Image, HogPro, HHI just to name a few, CCR carved out a name for itself very quickly as the go-to manufacture.

With the motorcycle wheel market securely locked down, CCR branched out and in 2007 the addition of S&S Components (SSC) with wife Mina as owner, was needed. SSC’s main purpose was to inventory and distribute the ever-growing list of hubs, rotors and pulleys for the V-twin and Sport bike applications in the various private label wheel designs.

In 2008 SSC learned that the prominent billet road wheel company “Colorado Custom” was up for sale. SSC made an offer and the deal was done. Later that same year the purchase of Roadawg Customs, a billet steering wheel manufacture was made final. Now with the ability to design, program, machine, and market billet road wheels, steering wheels and the aforementioned private label motorcycle wheels it seemed simple to add the up and coming brand of CC Cycle Wheels.

Utilizing state of the art designs, ultra modern programming from programmers with vast experience in all forms of automotive design and the unmatched 3-D machining techniques, CC Cycle Wheels is well on in way to be the brand of choice by the top dealers and enthusiasts around the world.

I have an ‘09 stock 110-inch Twin Cam. I’m thinking about doing a gear to gear set up and changing cams. I ride cross country and would like to add a little performance to it. What would Zipper’s say is a replacement cam for the bike. It’s a Road Glide. Not looking for anything radical.

With a late model 110 engine, we will strongly advise you to stick with the chain drive cams. Some H-D cranks have as much as .006 run out when new, gear drive cams cannot tolerate above .003.

As for your 110, for touring, the power increase from the RS 527 cams will deliver excellent torque and drivability right in the areas you ride, similar to the curves you have seen in the Rogue 525 article.

Glo had been dealing with COPD and Lung Cancer for the past few years. Glo helped me make membership cards at my kitchen table before we even had a State Office. She continued to help me when the State Office opened in September 1987 and eventually became a paid part time employee and worked for me till March 1999, when she left to go to nursing school.

BIKERNET MEDICAL CENTER WORKING WITH DR. WEIL ON THE Secret of Sound Sleep–  Regular exercise is good for your heart, your waistline and your sleep. A new poll conducted by the National Sleep Foundation revealed that people who reported exercising vigorously were almost twice as likely to say they slept well nightly, or almost every night.

They were also the least likely to complain of problems falling asleep or waking too early and not being able to nod off again. In comparison, half of poll participants who said they don’t exercise reported waking during the night, and nearly one quarter had trouble falling asleep again.

Worse, poll participants who didn’t exercise experienced more symptoms of sleep apnea, a condition that causes you to stop breathing periodically during sleep and is associated with an increased the risk of heart disease and stroke. The poll found a 44 percent risk of sleep apnea in non-exercisers, compared to a 26 percent risk among participants who said they exercised lightly, a 22 percent risk among those who described their exercise as moderate and only a 19 percent risk in those who exercise vigorously.

Another interesting finding: contrary to conventional wisdom, poll participants who exercised close to bedtime reported sleeping as well as those who exercised earlier in the day, a finding that prompted the NSF to change its recommendation about the timing of exercise from “not in the hours prior to bedtime” to “any time you want.”

My take? This is good news.

Inadequate sleep can endanger your health in many ways: it increases the risk of accidents caused by fatigue and promotes weight gain, perhaps by disrupting production of the appetite regulating hormones ghrelin and leptin. Sleep deprivation can also disrupt the body’s regulation of blood sugar, which can increase risk of type 2 diabetes. And laboratory studies suggest that not getting adequate rest may also elevate levels of stress hormones, boost blood pressure, and increase inflammation – all changes that may lead to disease later in life.

Performing regular physical activity can allow you to get the rest you need and help prevent the health problems caused by poor sleep.

DRIVERS AREN’T HIGH BUY STILL BEING BUSTED FOR DUI–Arizona drivers are going to jail, paying big fines and losing their licenses even after blood tests prove they were not high.

What if you could get a DUI for having had a few drinks two weeks ago?

Crazy, right?

Except it’s happening. Not with alcohol, but with marijuana.

Drivers from Arizona and at least nine other states, including Utah, Iowa, Indiana, Delaware and Rhode Island, are going to jail, paying big fines and losing their licenses after having gotten driving-under-the-influence citations when blood tests prove they were not high.

“It makes no sense,” says attorney Michael Alarid III, who is representing a man charged in Arizona. “But this is how prosecutors and the courts are interpreting the law. And the legislature doesn’t appear to want to change it. So we’re hoping we can get the issue before the state Supreme Court.”

How could a person who is not high get busted for DUI? It happens when science meets politics.
Blood tests can detect two important chemical compounds that come from marijuana. One of them, THC, makes a person high and lasts for hours. The other inactive chemical, created as your body neutralizes THC, can linger in a person’s system for up to a month.

In Arizona, state law says if you have either of these compounds in your blood, you are guilty of a DUI.

“As things stand,” Alarid says, “a person from Arizona could go on a snowboarding trip to Colorado or Washington state, where marijuana is legal for recreational use, and then a month later he could be driving in Arizona, get stopped and be convicted of DUI.”

Not long ago, the state Court of Appeals upheld Arizona’s law, which says if any “metabolite” of a drug like marijuana is found in a person’s blood he is guilty of DUI.

Alarid got a lower court to dismiss the original charges against his client after it was shown that the marijuana chemicals found in his client’s blood were inactive. The Court of Appeals overturned it. In its ruling in Arizona v. Shilgevorkyan,the court says, “We determined that the legislative ban extends to all substances, whether capable of causing impairment or not.”

Apparently, there is no statute in Arizona outlawing impaired logic. Not in Michigan or Illinois, either, where even the state Supreme Courts have upheld DUI convictions of people not under the influence of anything.

In Arizona, the case is being prosecuted by the Maricopa County Attorney’s office. I asked County Attorney Bill Montgomery whether he believed it was appropriate to convict people for DUI when the only marijuana metabolite in their blood did not cause impairment.

He responded, “The Court of Appeals decision is unremarkable in light of consistent case law on the issue of proscribing driving with a prohibited drug or its metabolite in a driver’s system.”

Because that didn’t answer my question I tried again, asking whether Montgomery would favor amending state law to differentiate between metabolites that cause impairment and those that do not.

He responded, “No. We do not want to create an incentive to ‘game’ how long it takes for any given metabolite to leave a driver’s system. Nice try, Ed.”

It isn’t a game. It’s chemistry.

Some states at least try to acknowledge the science. In Washington state, for example, a person is considered impaired if a blood test shows 5.0 nanograms of marijuana’s active ingredient. That level has been compared to a .08 limit for alcohol.

“An alcohol DUI in Arizona gets your license suspended for 90 days,” Alarid says. “After 30 days, you can drive to work and school. On the other hand, a drug-related DUI, like marijuana, gets you the same fines and jail time but revokes your license for a year. That means a person who wasn’t impaired could be punished more harshly than someone who was.”

Alarid is hoping the Arizona Supreme Court will take his case.

“In addition to the fairness issue, this doesn’t seem right in a state where citizens passed a medical marijuana law,” Alarid says. “It really puts an unfair burden on those patients.”

The risk of getting busted for a DUI charge when they are not impaired might cause some medical marijuana patients not to use the drug, no matter how much it helps them.

Of course, it’s probably just a coincidence that the politicians who could revise the DUI statute hate the medical marijuana law. As does the county attorney.

Coincidence. Yeah, that must be it.

CUSTOM: ExCeL London–THE first of two AMD World Championship of Custom Bike Building affiliate events taking place in the UK was held in London in February, when The Custom Show took place as part of the MCN London Motorcycle Show.

Over the weekend of February 15-17 an international selection of custom bikes was gathered together in London’s ExCel center as competitors vied to win not only travel expenses (sponsored by Ocean Events) to the 2013 World Championship event in Essen, at Big Bike Europe but also an additional €1,000 of prize money from Zodiac International.

No Stock Bikes, which is based in Gijano – Villasana de Mena, Spain, was named best in Show with its BMX inspired bike Herejia.

In the Freestyle class the top honor was taken by Mark Bosher with his Sportster-based Speed Bobber. The runner-up places in the Freestyle class went to Dejavu by AFB Custom Motorcycles and Snob’s Custom Cycles’ Hamdi’s Pan.

The Modified Harley class (sponsored by Harley-Davidson UK who also provided a £1250 prize for the winner to compete at the World Championship) was closely contested between authorized dealer Shaw Harley-Davidson and leading UK custom shop Krazy Horse Customs, with the latter taking not only first place with its Flat Iron but also third with Studdy’s Knuckle. Splitting the two Krazy bikes was Shaw’s Da Hui in second place.

The second UK affiliate show, again operated by Ocean Events, is now accepting entries via The Custom Show and will take place during The Custom Motorcycle Show at Beaulieu, home of the National Motor Museum, 15-16th June, 2013.

UNCLE MONKEY REFLECTS ON THE NEW RIDING SEASON–As I look out across the stark whiteness of the four feet of snow in my yard and the 12″ deep ruts in the ice covered street I don’t think I’ll be riding any time soon. Every year I am amused as my friends would count down to the middle of March, the supposed unofficial beginning of riding season in Saskatchewan. While I’ll agree there have been years where I have ridden my bike to the Moose Jaw Swap meet that weekend, more often then not, it would usually be a few more weeks before the ice and snow would release my bike from the winter clutched of the garage.

This winter has seen an unusually large amount of snowfall for us in the Great Plains but the national weather service assures me that it has been a milder then usual winter. Some of that has to do with the wild temperature swings from -40 to barely above freezing back down to -40 sometimes with 48 hours.

The other factor is telling people that it will be -40 for the next week is not exactly the greatest for tourism so we invented wind chill. What wind chill means is that even though the thermometer says -40, and it feels like -40, if you sealed that thermometer in a sealed chamber, in an enclosed room – it will only read -20 so they tell everyone it is only -20. So while the record books have recorded balmy Saskatchewan winter days of -15C the real temperature was sometimes closer to -50 thanks to wind chill.

So, here I sit with a few more weeks of winter, a few more weeks of pining for the open road. I check the web sites to see which bands have been added to play Sturgis, read the updates from Daytona, plot out my weekend schedule of places and parties to attend, and take comfort that soooon this winter will be over.

CV CARB MODS FROM LC FABRICATIONS–We bolt up air cleaners, a simple way to snag another horse or two and change the all-important right side view of your hog so everyone knows that you’re not just shuffling along on a stock bike. They look great, but as those of you with Evo XLs and Dynas might have noticed, they cause another problem. Check out this photo.

My retro-looking S&S air cleaner has done a great job of flowing air and looking slick, but it’s also putting my duck-ugly sun-faded crap-plastic dashpot cover on the top of my Keihin CV carb out there for everyone to see. Lame.

I ran into Jeremy Cupp from LC Fabrications (www.lcfabrications.com) who had a clean-as-Clorox solution in the form of his machined billet aluminum CV carb topper. Wait, I said that wrong. AMERICAN machined billet carb topper, thanks very much. Like all his other parts, Jeremy’s carb toppers are machined right in Grottoes, VA, which is in the United States of America, in case you didn’t pay attention in Geography.

He makes similar carb toppers for modern and vintage Brit bikes, as well as some of those Yamahas that seem so popular for chopping and cafe racer-ing these days. Check out how nicely it’s added some unlikely flash to my otherwise shabby grocery-grabbing Sportster:

The contrast cut finish takes two separate machining processes to achieve, but the result speaks for itself. This little guy would blend right in with some of the newer contrast cut parts we’ve been seeing from Performance Machine and the like, for those of you interested in building a coherent look. They bolt up to stock CV carbs from early EVOs up to late ones, both Big Twins and XLs.

Installation was a 20 minute affair in the driveway, a simple matter of unbolting the carb and unscrewing the OEM carb top and throttle cable bracket (mind you don’t kink or bind those throttle cables, guys and girls.) Can’t help but be pleased; nothing makes me happier than throwing stock parts into the box under my workbench that’s reserved for that very purpose.

HANG ON FOR Australian Police raids– Explosives, firearms, a machine gun and more than $500,000 in counterfeit cash has been seized by police in New South Wales, Australia’s largest state, in dawn raids on the premises of alleged organized crime groups.

Organized crime squad Superintendent Mick Plotecki said about 400 police officers were involved in the raids, which saw 30 warrants executed, and 18 people arrested. About 29 people are expected to be arrested today.
Among those targeted were “very senior members” of the Hells Angels, Rebels and Comanchero motorcycle clubs, as well as Asian and Balkan crime groups.

Supt Plotecki said police have seized explosives, a machine gun, firearms – including pistols, shot guns and shortened firearms – imitation firearms, $500,000 in counterfeit cash, a hand grenade and a variety of drugs.

“I am disturbed by some of the stuff we’ve taken because of the sheer audacity of these people to think they can actually acquire these materials,” he said.
Supt Plotecki said, over the 21-month investigation, police executed 95 warrants and 41 telephone interception warrants covering 94 telephones. Investigators intercepted more than 500,000 telephone calls.

He said this morning’s arrests wiped out some underground networks.

“Some of the networks we’ve targeted, we’ve basically arrested the whole network so they will be defunct as an entity,” he said. “The key component of this job is targeting those people that make these networks work and we’re targeting particularly the people who go out and procure firearms and drugs and also those that supply them. It certainly makes it more difficult for them. The question they’ve got to ask themselves is who am I dealing with.”

NSW Police Force Commissioner Andrew Scipione said Strike Force Alistair netted senior crime figures.

“You will be surprised by some of the names that will come out. There are some very senior members of organized crime gangs and that will roll out over the course of the day. You will be surprised with some of the allegations because they’re very serious,” he said.

“In terms of organized crime, NSW Police and the Crime Commission have you people [criminals] firmly in our sights. We’re not going away.
“We’ll continue to pursue you, those that support you, those that supply you with drugs. We will come after you. The team today has shown you what we can do…There will be another operation.”
Two new search warrants were undertaken in the Wollongong area this morning.

The home of George Bubanja is among those raided – he is expected to be charged with drug offences.

Babunja is said to be a major figure on the police radar and has been for many years.
His son, Dalibor, is currently in jail for murder.
In Sydney the home if Giacomo “Jack” Dipizio – the president-elect of the Comanchero motorcycle club- was raided on Hillary Street. His brother, Gianni, also had his house on Merrylands road at Merrylands raided.

Police will allege Gianni is not a member of a motorcycle club but was the link for the Comanchero to Asian organised crime figures.
On Pearson Street at South Wentworthville police arrested Kamel “Blackie” Barakat – he was brought out in handcuffs wearing only orange underwear.
A Harley-Davidson motorbike was also seized at the address.

Earlier this morning, several high-ranking Comancheros and Hells Angels bikers were arrested during a large police operation across Sydney and Wollongong.

Heavily armed teams from the elite Tactical Operations Unit raided two homes at Greystanes and South Wentworthville in Sydney’s west around 6.30 arresting two men – understood to be the President of the Comancheros and the Vice President of the Hells Angels Merrylands chapter.
Another man believed to be the brother of the Vice President of the Hells Angels Parramatta chapter was also arrested at his home at South Wentworthville.

Today’s operation, codenamed Strike Force Alistair, is the culmination of a 21-month highly covert joint investigation by State Crime Command detectives and the NSW Crime Commission.
Across the city, hundreds of uniformed officers. State crime command detectives and specialists including the Riot Squad executed simultaneous raids on homes and premises including the Hells Angels clubhouse in Chinatown.

It is understood several senior crime figures from Balkan organized crime and Sing Ma, an Asian organized crime gang, have also been swept up in the net.

Those arrested today are expected to be charged with almost 100 serious drug and firearms offences including supply commercial quantities of drugs and trafficking guns and explosives.
Police will allege senior Balkan organized crime figures supplied a quantity of guns and explosives to a number of bikies which were intended to be used in the escalating war between the Hells Angels and the Comancheros.

During the investigation a large quantity of drugs and guns were seized along with more than half a million dollars in counterfeit money – allegedly belonging to the Comancheros.

76 YEARS AGO YESTERDAY!–  This Day in Harley-Davidson History – March 13, 1937 – Joe Petrali set the land speed record for two-wheeled vehicles on a 4-valve 61 OHV with a speed of 136.183 miles per hour.

On March 13, 1937, Joe Petrali set a land speed record of 136….183 miles per hour at Daytona.

He rode a blue 1936 EL equipped with a 61 cubic inch Knucklehead engine that was specially designed for the attempt.

It featured low-slung handlebars, a fairing made from a cut and reshaped gas tank, and a rear tail fin assembly for aerodynamics.

The tail fin had to be removed for the official attempt, though, because of the vibration it caused.

This race marked the beginning of Harley-Davidson’s pursuit of land speed records.

Since then, Harley-Davidson has built a variety of vehicles that have broken several different classes of land speed records.

An article appearing today on NBCNews.com is falsely reporting that NRA will not oppose legislation being negotiated in the U.S. Senate that would mandate background checks for all gun purchasers.

The story posted on NBCNews.com alleges that NRA will not oppose expanding the background check system to include all private firearm sales, “provided the legislation does not require private gun sellers to maintain records of the checks”. This statement is completely untrue. The NRA opposes criminalizing private firearms transfers between law-abiding individuals, and therefore opposes an expansion of the background check system.

The NRA supports meaningful efforts to address the problems of violent crime and mass violence in America, through swift and certain prosecution of violent criminals; securing our schools; and fixing our broken mental health system.

U.S. Army Specialist Charlie Lemon Announced as Grand Marshal for 2013 Honda Grand Prix of St. Petersburg–  The Honda Grand Prix of St. Petersburg has named U.S. Army Specialist and St. Petersburg resident Charlie Lemon as the Grand Marshal of its season-opening IZOD IndyCar Series race, taking place March 22-24. SPC Lemon is a double-amputee combat veteran and local ambassador for Wish for Our Heroes, a national charity focused on assisting military members faced with hardship.

SPC Lemon will perform the standard Grand Marshal duties, which will include giving the famous “drivers, start your engines” command to start the race.

Susie Wheldon, wife of the late IZOD IndyCar Series driver Dan Wheldon, will wave the green flag and participate in the pre-race ceremonies of the ninth edition of the Honda Grand Prix of St. Petersburg.

Season 11 American Idol contestant Shannon Magrane and local Paralympic sailor Jen French will also be part of the event. Magrane, a Tampa native, will sing the national anthem during pre-race ceremonies. She is a singer/songwriter and the daughter of former St. Louis Cardinal pitcher Joe Magrane. French, a St. Petersburg resident, silver medalist from the London 2012 Paralympic Games and 2012 US Sailing Yachts Women of the Year, will ride in the IndyCar two-seater, known as the “fastest seat in sports”, to pace Sunday’s IZOD IndyCar Series race. Magrane and French will both attend the Greenflag VIP Luncheon, taking place Thursday of race week at the Vinoy Golf Club.

WHAT NEXT FROM DOWN UNDER BY AN AUSTRALIAN MC ROADBLOCK–  Up to 140 Victorian police officers joined members from the Sheriff’s office and dog squad in what media is saying is a massive show of strength as Finks from across the country converged on Melbourne for a national run.

The Sheriff’s Office said it executed about $43,000 for outstanding warrants, handed out to 15 of the riders.

Three bikes were impounded for outstanding fines, and one was impounded for licencing offences.
The roadblock was set up on the Hume Highway just outside of Wallan about 6pm as the bikers made their way from Glenrowan.

Bikers from Queensland and NSW joined others from Western Australia, South Australia and Victoria on the outskirts of Ned Kelly country before making their journey into town.
The club was expected to gather at its Port Melbourne clubhouse before partying into the night.

INDIAN UNVEILS MASSIVE 111-INCH THUNDER STROKE ENGINE—

America’s oldest motorcycle company unveiled its newest engine Saturday night at the Daytona Bike Week celebration in Florida, and it’s big.

Really big. In celebration of the company’s 112-year-old legacy, it’s an 111-cubic-inch engine. With 115 foot-pounds of torque.

The massive V-twin power plant will become the “heartbeat of upcoming, all new 2014 Indian motorcycles.” So far, the company isn’t saying what that motorcycle is.

For now, the only machine being driven by the giant Thunder Stroke is the Spirit of Munro, a brand new speed racer named after legendary Burt Munro, who in 1967 set the all-time land speed record for a motorcycle under 1000cc. Burt hit 183.586 mph at the Bonneville Salt Flat riding a customized 1920 Indian Scout. (His triumph was re-enacted by Anthony Hopkins in the 2005 film “The World’s Fastest Indian.”) The Spirit was designed by Jeb Scolman, of the Long Beach fabricator Jeb’s Metal and Speed.

The engine was built in Osceola, Wisc., and will be attached to motorcycles in Spirit Lake, Iowa, in factories operated by Polaris Industries — the relatively new owner of the very old motorcycle company.

Polaris bought Indian in 2011. The 2013 Indian Chief Final Edition, revealed at last year’s Progressive International Motorcycle Show in Long Beach, was the last of the company’s motorcycles to be assembled at the Kings Mountain, N.C., facility. All future Indians will be built at Spirit Lake.

Folks from Polaris have hinted that the 2014 line will be filled with forward-looking variations on the historic line, with models aimed at segments of the motorcycle market that haven’t purchased Indians before.

Some of them, it appears, will be running Thunder Stroke engines.

HOLY MOLY—Never a dull moment on the edge of Port of Los Angeles. Motorcycles are coming and going at a rapid pace. The Frogman hauled his stretched FXR to the shop for sale. It took just two minutes to sell it to Bob Bitchin. “I’ve got to have that puppy,” Bob said. That scooter is staying in the family.

Then Bad Brad got the itchin’ for a ’98 Road King and found one down the street, build by Fred from ’50s Boys. He’s so excited he can’t stand it. We got our 1928 Shovelhead running, tuned and repaired, and Kyle, the Official Bikernet Electrician is riding it to the Chowder Barge, and digging the shit out of it.

The sun is out, and the spirit is warming up. I can’t wait to pull the Mudflap Girl off the lift, and hit the road. I might not come back.

Jeremiah Soto, the official Bikernet fresh fish distributor, is looking to sell his Twin Cam and buy an FXR. He’s itching for the road and a run to the Redwoods.


 

I should be back at Bennett’s Performance for more progress on the 106-inch S&S build in the next week. Hopefully I can ride over and ride to Mazatlan for the largest Mexican rally.
