We were doing some filming for the Smoke Out last week, then Tobey, our official BIKERNET certified welder showed up. He is helping Kyle, the shop intern, pass his welding certification and become a union crane mechanic. I don’t want to tell you how much this 25-year-old will make at the Port of Los Angeles. Let’s see if he steps up.
As Tobey prepared to roll out last night he mentioned his Thai massage girls and a Thai TV network in the states. They want us to shoot some riding footage. I’ll keep you posted, but I need a massage. He blew up his Ninja engine. If anyone knows of one cheap, let us know. The poor bastard is without wheels.

INDY ULTIMATE BUILDER WINNERS–The 2013 J&P Cycles Ultimate Builder US Championship saw winning bikes from Chicago, Cleveland, Dallas, Detroit and Atlanta compete with the local heroes from Indianapolis. The Championship presented 54 outstanding customs competing for $26,000 in cash and prizes. The local Southside Harley-Davidson provided a four-bike vintage showcase to celebrate the racing heritage of Indianapolis.
As imagined, with so many winners in attendance from previous events, each of the five classes were extremely tight with just a point or two deciding the first 3 places. Judging is based on the AMD Championship of Custom Bike Building with the builders judging each other’s bikes.
To celebrate the US Championship, Powersports firms jumped in to provide awards including Harley-Davidson with a Screamin Eagle 120R powerplant, Avon Tires with 2 sets of tires, Yoshimura with a slip-on and gift certificate as well as JDA providing gift certificates. Bell offered up a couple Custom 500 lids pinstriped lids by Scratch. HelmetLok and Wizard Products kicked down products for all the placing competitors too.
On hand for the Championship and to show some love to the competitors were Cyclesource Magazine and IronWorks Magazine. They awarded feature articles to Paul Anderson with his 1946 WLA and Jay Hart with his 2012 / 1977 Harley-Davidson FL, respectively.
Kyle Shorey of Shadetree Fabrications took Indy by storm. His FreeStyle class win at the US Championship of the Ultimate Builder Custom Bike Show in Indianapolis with Speedmetal has brought in $12,500 in total winnings to date. T
Kyle has won each show he has entered and has taken the top prize in Atlanta, Dallas, Chicago and now Indianapolis. Speedmetal began life as a customer’s Saxon Crown chopper. The wheels, engine, brakes and tranny were salvaged from the donor bike. A key feature of the bike is the prototype springer, which has gone through extensive on-road testing and will be available to the public later this year. With his win in Indy, Kyle is now the leading money winner in the series with $12,500.

Adams Karns turned his shop-worn ’01 Sportster into a primo new school board tracker that rocks the 2013 US Championship of the J&P Ultimate Builder. It boasts a 360mm rear wheel and C and S Customs extended 360 single sided swingarm, tricy air ride suspension with a modified front suspension to give the bike a correct ride height.
To get the performance just right, the bike features twin-bottle nitrous, Velocity stage 2.5 turbo kit, GTX Turbo, undercut transmission and lock up clutch.

UNCLE MONKEY ON THE COST OF INSURANCE IN CANADA–
I try not to complain about our local auto insurance company SGI. In Saskatchewan if you want to plate any vehicle you only have one option in the Saskatchewan Government Insurance. Along with your plate you get insurance.
You have no other option other then to buy down your deductible, as SGI coverage is more then adequate. This upsets many people and competition would be nice but we are fortunate to have some of the lowest insurance in Canada and many parts of North America. We have peace of mind that everyone with a currant registered vehicle is covered with insurance.
Recently SGI has announced that they will be increasing our insurance rates. For the most part the increases are minimal. For example my wife’s truck will be decreasing by $75 while my truck is going up $39.
The kick to the teeth comes to us motorcycle riders. SGI is proposing massive increases across the board. How much of an increase? Snow White, a 2012 custom built motorcycle’s insurance will be increasing from $1766 to $2553. Mrs Monkey 30+ year old Honda CM250 is increasing 366% to 844. The hardest hit ($844 is still somewhat manageable) are the sport bike rides who could be seeing a 242% increase.
To plate a 2011 or newer sport bike riders will be paying $5661 per year. That is $472 per month just to have insurance on a two-year-old motorcycle. Someone who has a newer Harley, a ten-year-old crotch rocket, and old Panhead and a 250cc enduro will be paying over $10,700 a year for plates for them let alone any caged vehicle they drive. The bright spot being if his cage is a 2013 Camaro ZL-1 convertible his plates will be going down $53 to $1344 per year.
They claim that the rising cost of injury claims for motorcyclists is the reason behind the increases. It is a double edge sword that we are stumbling onto. Most motorcycle accidents are not caused by the rider but by other drivers’ inattention to motorcyclists. The increase in riders in recent years means there are more riders out on the streets fighting to be noticed over people’s cell phones and texts. The increase in riders also means that there are more inexperience riders out on the streets now.
Sadly I’ve seen sport bike riders regularly dump their bikes as they try to learn some new trick, some new wheelie only to turn around at the end of summer and file a claim that their bike had been in an accident. Some metric riders learning the depreciation of jap bikes the hard way decide it is cheaper to lay their bike down into the ditch to get a pay out than try to find a buyer or get pennies on the dollar at the dealership. This is over and above the usual accidents that we unfortunately see every day.
Another contributing factor is SGI is not recouping money from total lost motorcycles. It is not uncommon to see SGI trying to sell a total lost ‘98 Road King for $10,000 when the local street price for a non-wreck is $11,000 or a ‘07 ElectraGlide for $12,500 when the non-wreck is $15,000.
These are not scratch and dent total loss bikes either. They require complete front ends, all new bags and sheet metal, new chrome and bright work. Some of these bikes are not even worthy donors as they have cracked heads and cases. As a builder, with access to wholesale cost parts, and my own free labor, often it would be cheaper to buy a complete running bike rather then from SGI and that isn’t even considering selling off the parts that I change out.
The new rates are not to take effect until Aug this year, as they first have to pass a rate review panel. In the past Saskatchewan rate review panels rubber stamped everything that pasted their desk but in recent years they have been putting their foot down and not allowing unjustified rate changes. With the majority of motorcycle accidents the fault of vehicle drivers and not motorcyclists it seems unfair that we should shoulder this rate hike.
Time will only tell if the Saskatchewan government will tax our freedom.

BRIEFS Deputy quits over prostitute allegations– CLEARWATER — A Pinellas County Sheriff’s deputy has resigned over a series of misconducts that include picking up a prostitute. Deputy Robert Johnson resigned this week after an internal investigation found that he lied to detectives about his actions Sept. 12. That’s when Clearwater police saw him picking up a prostitute.
The investigation also found that Johnson violated policy by leaving work early and telling his ex-wife that she was being investigated for doctor shopping.

MOTORCYCLE OFFICERS RECEIVE BODY CAMERAS–Motorcycle police officers in Pigeon Forge will soon be outfitted with video cameras that attach to their uniforms.
The city council there has approved the purchase of eight body cameras for their motorcycle officers that cost about $900 each. With most police cars equipped with dashboard cameras, Police Chief Jack Baldwin said the officers who ride motorcycles wanted a version they could use because it enhances their testimony in court and protects them against complaints.
L3 Communications Mobile-Vision, Inc., of Boonton, N. J., provides the department with in-car cameras and loaned the department a body camera to try out for a month. Baldwin said the cameras have been tested out by the military and other police agencies.
NEVADA BILLS WOULD REDUCE EMISSIONS TESTING AND REPEAL HELMET LAW–

CARSON CITY — Bills introduced in the Nevada Senate on Monday would reduce vehicle emissions testing in Clark and Washoe counties and repeal the state’s motorcycle helmet law for riders 21 and older.
Vehicle emissions testing would be reduced to every four years for newer vehicles and every two years for other cars and trucks.
Sen. Don Gustavson, R-Sparks, sponsor of both bills, said they would not result in more smog or motorcycle deaths.
A similar emissions bill was approved in a Senate committee in 2011 but never got to the floor for a final vote, Gustavson said. “I’ve got lots of support for this,” he said.
The smog inspection stations might oppose the bill, but the certificate fee for the emissions test — which does not include the inspection fee — would be raised from $6 to $12 for the two-year check.
As far as Nevada’s motorcycle helmet law goes, 31 states have repealed similar laws and research has shown little change in motorcycle crash death rates, Gustavson said. Most injures from crashes are to the arms, legs and other parts of the body — not the head, Gustavson said.
The exemption from the helmet law would apply to those 21 years old or older who have at least one year of riding experience and pass a safety course.
Passengers also would not have to wear helmets, as long as they are at least 21.
Cyclists would still have to wear goggles or glasses if the bike does not have a windshield.
Gustavson said some people won’t buy motorcycles in Nevada or attend motorcycle rallies in the state because of the helmet laws. That results in lost revenue from tourism and sales taxes, he said.

MAGGIE MCNALLY ELECTED CHAIR OF AMA BOARD OF DIRECTORS–
PICKERINGTON, Ohio — The American Motorcyclist Association is pleased to
announce that Maggie McNally was unanimously elected chair of the AMA Board
of Directors at its meeting in Indianapolis on Feb. 16.
McNally, of Albany, N.Y., was elected vice chair in December 2011 and has been a member of the board since 2009, representing individual AMA members in the Northeast Region. With her election, she becomes the first woman to
lead the AMA board in the association’s 89-year history.
“I’m honored that my fellow AMA board members have chosen me as chair, and I’m humbled by the historical significance of a woman taking this office,” McNally said. “At the end of the day, however, the important thing is not the gender of the board’s chair, rather it is the united commitment by the board and the AMA staff to carry out our mission to better protect and promote motorcycling. Doing so enables us to nimbly and ably meet the needs of our existing and future members.”
McNally succeeds South Central Region Board Member Stan Simpson, who did not seek re-election as chair. Simpson, who remains on the board, was elected to the AMA Board of Directors in 2005 and served as its chair since 2007. In 2008, he was recognized as the AMA Motorcyclist of the Year.
Also at the meeting, AMA Business Member Russel Brenan of Kawasaki was elected vice chair, and Ken Ford of the Southeast Region was elected assistant treasurer.
Members elected at-large to serve on the executive committee were Perry King of the
Northwest Region and business member John Ulrich, of Roadracing World.
At the AMA Business Member meeting earlier that same day, Scott Miller of Harley-Davidson Motor Company and Brenan were re-elected to the AMA board.
“The AMA Board of Directors represents a wide-ranging pool of experience,
expertise and passion for motorcycling,” McNally said. “We draw from the
motorcycling industry, AMA clubs, our membership and the entire motorcycling
community. I’m confident that we are in an excellent position to build upon
the momentum we’ve created to continue the AMA’s mission of promoting the
motorcycle lifestyle and protecting the future of motorcycling.”

HARLEY-DAVIDSON RUNS E85– An interesting article in Ethanol Producer Magazine about the conversion and tuning process of a Harley-Davidson motorcycle to run E85 fuel (85% ethanol and 15% ordinary gas).
The use of E10 Unleaded is approved under warranty by major motorcycle manufactures including Harley-Davidson, Honda, Kawasaki, Suzuki and Yamaha. In fact, Harley goes so far to actually promote/recommend the use of renewable, clean air fuels such as E10 because of their environmental benefits. Their stance is on E85 is bit less clear.
However, Ronald M. Hutchinson (Sr. VP Product Development; bio) recently provided some insight in an interview with QuickThrottle.com (October 2008 edition):
Question: Is Harley doing any initial research on alternative fuels and energy sources? Answer: I can’t really talk about future products. But I can tell you that we are looking at and have run and currently have motorcycles that run on a much higher level of ethanol because we sell a lot of motorcycles in Brazil. Fuels there are sugar-based ethanol that have slightly higher energy content than stuff we get here. But regardless we already have the capability of providing products that do just that – that run on a higher percentage of ethanol and we are also looking at a variety of different alternatives.
More than 40 percent of the gasoline sold across the U.S. contains oxygenates such as ethanol. There has been an dramatic increase in the availability of E85 as well as the number of automobiles that can operate on E85 (called Flexible Fuel Vehicles (FFV’s)). It will be interesting to watch how this progresses for motorcycles. For a current list of E85 station visit E85.

FLORIDA, BIKERS IN NEED–This past weekend, along with a lot of other bikers, I attended the Bikers In Need run to collect food and basic necessities for families in the biker community throughout Brevard Country Florida. This run was started by Bear Conaway and continues in his memory. Helping our own is what it is all about he said.
Like “Bear” I try to support motorcycle charities BUT I also realize that charity starts at home and that means the Bikers and Their Families.
There was a good turnout for this event including many clubs and free riders. I hope all will help BIN continue to help our brothers, sisters and their families through these troubled times.

For the fifth time Glenn Ocklund the founding father invited daredevils to the middle of Sweden in the small city of ORSA Dalarna. He and his volunteers of 100 had been preparing several courses since Christmas! By removing snow everyday the ice thickness increased to 80cm (30 inch) with snow left 40cm (15 inch).
Ola Sveen from Norway came with 20 over springer and handshift!!! 141 km/H with his out of the box S&S Panheadseries engine, Ola is a showman some screams could be heard from the 5000 spectators while he was snaking his way through ice and snow, BIG BALLS!
Still I feel like it´s more lika a rendezvous like the ol’ trappers who came down from the mountains of the wild west in USA and discussed what happened during the winter. BBQ on ice and to hear the mix of so many languages is a mindblower in the dark. My wife complained for several days that I was speaking english with her..
When an event like this turns 5, there is choices for the future. With more and more people with a professional view things have to have a good flow. Spectators want to look at jetengines and weird stuff that move and unfortunality brake and take time to clean after. And with a gigantic staff workin around the clock it take it´s toll. For me after 2 years I also notice that 80% is the same vehicles, more new riders, how to get them??
Whatever 295 km/H was the topspeed, and I got sick over and out!!

Yet another unbelievable week living the most remarkable life, in the heart of Southern California where the action is non-stop seven days a week. The NHRA opener this past weekend in Pomona had Antron Brown walking away from a major top fuel fireball, simply amazing. The safety capsule took care of business, perfectly.
Last Friday just after sunrise while a port full of heavily loaded trucks rumbled past the Bikernet headquarters shakin’ the shit out of things, we loaded the 5-Ball Racing Teams 124 inch, turbocharged twin cam Raycer on the shops trusty Kendon Combo Trailer for a trip to Mark Susman’s, Colorado Custom where a few of the final pieces needed will come to life before heading to Race Tech in Corona for the finest in suspension tuning and alignment. We are on the lift once again with a plan and our goal from day one in mind, arrive safe, leave the same way, run straight and run faster than the day before.
George the Wild Brush is headed our way to kick the paint job into the next gear. Stay tuned for the latest news every Thursday, with a little extra earth shattering news for the Sunday Members only Cantina news. Attached are a few pics around the hood and on the way to Tuel Sleng Museum, in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. This was used during the Pol Pot regime – Khmer Rouge extermination of all “traitors,” some 20,000. Tuel Sleng means the hill of poisonous trees.
It used to be a High School and was the center of torture to find more “dangerous subversives.”
Not too different from Nazi concentration camps except it was his own people. I had been to the killing fields before, so I didn’t need to see them again. Tuel Sleng was just one of 150 execution centers in Cambodia.
Had another great lunch at a hotel restaurant because it was air conditioned (refrigerated air)
Seafood noodle soup and shrimp fried rice – excellent for $6.50 – too much had to leave some.
The days go by and it was time for the last fun run of this stay.
Walked to the zone streets – in and out of several – tattoos are super big here.
Generally speaking I would say this place is worth a visit by anybody. There is enough to do for a stay of several days. – food is inexpensive and very good.
While the food is very Thai like the lifestyle is very Vietnam like. People are pleasant – only the Tuk-Tuk drivers are a nuisance – a bunch on every corner.
They will ask (yesterday) $7 for a $1.50 ride – I won’t negotiate with a bandit. He loses.
I just go to the next guy so he sees that I was indeed a passenger, if he wasn’t a rip-off.
I took a metered taxi once that cost less than a T-T, just like Thailand.
Staying next to the Royal Palace is fairly central to most things to do and see, and walk-able.
So it is now 11:10 and got to move bags out of the room for a couple of hours.
Heading to Bkk at 5:10pm – arrive 6:20pm. NY Mike is there now.
Harry-Tommy and the boys will stay for about 12 hours to catch a 5am flight out to the US.

THE HUBCAP MAGNET–Yep, I was a teenager in So. Cal. in the 1950s. Was at the first race at Lions Drag Strip and most all of them after that. I’ve owned around 55 old cars, mostly Hot Rods. Owned two tire shops in the ‘60s and ‘70s, sold out and moved to Idaho in 1979. That’s a little of my history, very little, but enough.
A little over a year ago I went to an auction in a small town and found about a 65-year accumulation of classic and vintage wheel covers and hubcaps. This guy had been collecting hubcaps forever, almost as long as I have been taking up space on this planet and that’s a long, long time.
There was every make, model and year from the ‘40s, ‘50s, ‘60s, and ‘70s with quite a few from the 1900s thru the ‘30s. Some 98 percent of them are original. I went nuts when I saw them and had to have them. Reminded me of my tire shop days when we would sell a hundred or so sets of custom wheels a week and got the stock hubcaps and wheels for free. I had almost every one of these hubcaps, except mine, were mostly new. I HAD to have these, all of them.
Well, I now have them (moving them was sort of a chore) in an old bean warehouse in a thousand piles just waiting for someone to need them. The floor of that 8,000 sq. ft. building filled up very quick. Since there is no electricity, heat or water in that warehouse it took dang most all of the winter, spring and summer to sort through all of them.
I also have a business to run. We have been embroiders, for over 30 years, of hats, shirts, jackets, etc. and business is very good, thank goodness. Last winter we acquired another full time job, two Black Lab Puppies, they are training me very well. So, the hubcaps are a part time hobby to get me away from the other two jobs and I’m lovin’ it.
Yes, they are For Sale and I thought I’d offer the car club members the first chance at what they want or need before I advertise them to the general public. So, if you or anyone in your club is looking for one or a hundred let me know. You will also get pictures of the specific hubcaps you will get and it helps if you can send me a picture of exactly what it is you are looking for. If you have a question or want me to look for some for you, please contact me and I’ll be glad to do it.
Some are dented and with those I’m going to make into clocks. Great gifts or just fun to have in a garage or shop.
Oh Ya, how many hubcaps do I have??? Approximately 30,000. Yep, 30,000 of these wonderful shiny saucers. As it says in the subject line, “An Old 1950s Hot Rodder Has Lost His Mind.” My Wife totally agrees with that.
If you are thinking that I don’t have what you are looking for, you better ask me, because I have ‘em all. How many people do you know that have an Oakland hubcap from the 1920s, I do.

PENNZOIL AT BONNEVILLE IN 1932— The Bonneville Salt Flats have been a draw for speed freaks since before the term “hot rod” entered the popular lexicon, and this week’s film provides the proof. This video, recorded in September 1932, features footage of legendary race driver Ab Jenkins piloting a fenderless Pierce Arrow across the dry lakebed.
Jenkins was participating in a 24-hour endurance run that saw the V12-powered Pierce Arrow achieve an average speed of 112.91 mph. Advanced cinematography — and, remarkably, audio recordings — let us experience the run from all angles. There’s even aerial footage shot from a biplane.
If seeing and hearing Ab Jenkins in action isn’t enough, the film also gives us a rare glimpse into the world of prewar speed culture. Note the close-ups of early wire-tripped mechanical timing devices — later replaced by more accurate systems such as the electronic paper-punch mechanism developed by Walter Nass — and relatively sparse crowd of onlookers standing just feet away from Jenkin’s speeding Pierce Arrow.

We would like to thank everyone for their support. We are loading for Daytona on Monday March 4th, we will be setting up in Daytona the 8th thru the 17th of March. Some of our builders will also be set up at the IX show in Cleveland Ohio March 15-17. KENTUCKY’S MEET YOUR LEGISLATOR DAY– Members of the KMA/KBA legislative team will be in Frankfort this Wednesday 2-20-13 speaking with legislators from across the state on a variety of bills. We would like to invite any member who is able to make it to the Capitol in Frankfort to join us for a day of grassroots lobby work.
If you come please meet the team at 8:30am in the Capitol Annex cafeteria for light breakfast and then on walk the halls. Bring some comfy walking shoes!!!! Wear your leathers as well or whatever you feel comfortable in. Show that you are a biker, just please be tasteful in your t-shirt choices. (No FTW stuff for example) Also if you are coming, you may wish to call ahead to your legislators and set up a specific time to meet.
Sometimes their schedules can be hectic so getting on their agenda is a good thing to do. It is not always necessary but a good idea nonetheless. The switchoard’s number to get any legislator is 502-564-8100. Just ask for their office and you may get them or a secretary if they are out. If you cannot make it until later that is fine. Just look for the leathers, black shirts and jeans walking around the halls. Trust me we stand out in Frankfort.

Please ask your House of Representatives members to Please co-sponsor HB137. This is the bill that would increase the fines and penalties of someone who runs over a biker while not paying attention.
Rep. Bob Damron has asked us to help support his bill that folks at the Freedom Fighters had asked about. This bill would help bolster the 2nd amendment in the state and tell the federal government hands off our guns here. Once again please call and ask your Representative to Please co-sponsor HB 168.
A bill that has some steam moving through the legislature that we would like to stop is the statewide smoking ban HB 190. Personally, I do not smoke and do not see this as a smoking issue but rather another step towards the nanny state ideas that government has to tell us how to live every aspect of our lives. Please call you Senators and ask them to Please oppose HB 190.

DRUG PROHIBITION DOESN’T WORK
Never has…never will…………
Drug prohibition in America simply isn’t working in the USA anymore than the prohibition of alcohol did. The so called war on drugs would end instantly with the legalization, regulation, and taxation of the drugs that are currently in so high demand in the United States.
I personally don’t advocate the recreational use of drugs, with maybe the exception of Cannabis, but to keep drugs illegal is to maintain the outrageous profit margin of drug sales, and therefore the violence associated with illicit drug trafficking. Any astute businessman can see the solution….legalize drug use…regulate and tax the sale of those drugs, and the violence associated with drug trafficking will evaporate.
Oh, and by the way DEA people, Cannabis is not a narcotic, as I see it so erroneously referred to by anti-drug law enforcement officers on all the anti drug television shows. Of course the DEA would oppose such common sense measures. One of the single biggest positive results of legalizing drug use would be the loss of the swollen DEA budget, which is in the billions.
No self-respecting upper echelon DEA official would ever admit the current drug war can not be won the way it’s being waged, that would be like committing career suicide. The so-called War on Drugs money could and should then be targeted for rehabilitation of addicts, and other health concerns related to drug use.
Drug use is health problem, and should be treated as such! The number of people in jail or prison as of this moment for the sale and possession of marijuana is in my opinion a crime. A crime perpetrated on American citizens by the federal government. The bottom line is this. Americans are demanding drugs, the drug cartels are making a huge profit by bringing the drugs into America, and the DEA is spending billions of dollars in a losing effort to stop the drugs from coming across the border. The positively infantile, and ignorant head-in-the-sand anti cannabis stance of the federal government continues to be ludicrous, especially when considering today’s research based facts about the weed.
It’s time for American citizens to legalize the stuff that’s causing the problem. End the profit, tax the sales, and treat the addicts. We might even be able to start the trend towards balancing the budget, instead of burying the dead who lost their lives in the drug trade on both sides of the law. Sooner or later drugs will become legal in the USA, The violence associated with the drug trade will be gone, and anybody with a functioning brain will wonder why it did not happen a whole lot sooner.

SADDLEMEN ON THE PATH TO DAYTONA– Been swallowed whole here! Hahaha. I am working more and planning for Daytona this week so my time has been jacked up. I had my buddy weld the stud back on the shrunken FXR muffler. I added a thin grommet and washer to make a low budget mount that had some give to it. But this is a temp fix at best.
For now I can ride again so I am happy as a pig in shit. I have turned all the bad thrown at me into a positive. Shit, even I am proud of myself. I do dream of a change to my pipes- a 2 into 1 with a small megaphone on the end. Any ideas/suggestions?

ANOTHER WILD WEEK—Every week slips past like pulling the trigger on a seven round clip. I try to make every day count. I went for about seven to ten years with very limited connection to drugs, except pot. Pot is cool, although I can’t seem to smoke it anymore.
Okay, so over the last couple of years friends and relatives started running into drug problems. Use of pain killers became drug addicts. Folks got busted and didn’t follow up on the case, and it lead to more problems. What gives? I feel fortunate. I survived the ‘70s and ‘80s, but now it’s as if the kids didn’t learn anything from their parents. They are now heading down destructive paths. I can’t stand it. Enough negative waves.
We are hoping to receive a T-Rex Campagna frame and front end clip in March, and then we can decide on our body style for our next Bonneville effort. This could be fun.
