DYSFUNCTIONAL GOVERNMENT THURSDAY NEWS FOR JANUARY 17, 2013

Hey,

This is a helluva news. We have a handful of adventures perched on our desk just waiting for the go-ahead. I’m so goddamn excited I don’t know which way to turn.

Let’s just hit the news, and we’ll see if I don’t boil over at the end. I just want everyone to have a terrific time this year, build something amazing, have a few adventures and ride free. Am I asking too much?

NZ COPS ON THE WRONG SIDE OF THE LAW– At least 67 New Zealand police staff have been arrested in the past three years while serving on the force. Some of the charges include dealing LSD, assault, drink-driving and theft. The NZ Police Association say even one arrest was too many.

In the year to August, 10 police staff – sworn and non-sworn – had been arrested on charges including assault with a blunt instrument, theft of property under $500, theft of a motor vehicle and drink driving.

The districts which led the criminal behaviour were Canterbury and Waitemata, according to police figures released to the Herald under the Official Information Act.

In 2011, 28 police employees were arrested on charges including impersonating police, assault with intent to injure, unlawful sexual connection to a female and obstructing the course of justice.
Then, the districts with the greatest number of police arrested were Counties Manukau and Wellington with seven in each.

Police Association president Greg O’Connor said the figures clearly showed that police don’t look after their own – in fact they do the opposite.
“If there were no police officers being arrested and charged ever, I think the public would have rightfully more concern that there was covering up.

“No one who has had anything to do with police – particularly lawyers who look after police officers – would ever say anything other than they’re absolutely and utterly thorough.”

Mr O’Connor said many of the cases highlighted by the figures would have been found not guilty by the courts because, had they been a civilian, they probably would not have been charged. And he wanted to reiterate that not all of those arrested were police employees but were police staff.

“But even one is too many,” Mr O’Connor said.
The national manager of professional standards, Detective Superintendent Sue Schwalger said police took a zero-tolerance approach to criminal behaviour in their ranks.

NEW MOTORCYCLE SHOW COMING TO THE TUBE–Dale Walksler has a new show coming out soon on the Discovery Channel based around his “Wheels Through Time” museum, restorations, antique bike runs. It is tentatively to be called “Whats In The Barn.”

METALSPORT WHEELS MEETS LYNDALL COMPOSITE BRAKES—Bikernet had lunch with Ron Loynds, the boss of Metalsport Wheels and Paul Kittrell, the boss of Lyndall Brakes. They are excited to be working together to bring you a complete line of state-of-the-art composite rotors attached to billet centers using a new easy to switch out mounting system. Here are a handful of benefits:

1.They will offer up to 16-inch rotors.
2.They will make any center design requested for companies around the industry, (not one-offs).
3.They will sell rotors with blank centers so you can machine your own design into the center.

They are now building 16-inch rotors since bigger diameter wheels are harder to stop. Each MetalSport or Lyndall rotor will come with a lifetime guarantee. Guaranteed to create zero dust, zero noise, 30 percent increase in stopping power, and 100 percent customer satisfaction. If you use Lyndall pads, they are guaranteed to last a minimum of 18,000 miles.

These rotors are 65 percent lighter over any two-piece rotor, and 75 percent lighter than solid stainless rotors. The heat dissipation level is five times that of steal. These puppies are amazing and will be on display at the V-twin Expo show in Cincy first week of February.

STURGIS MOTORCYCLE MUSEUM & HALL OF FAME TO RECEIVE AWARD– The Sturgis Motorcycle Museum & Hall of Fame will be a recipient of the coveted 2013 Silver Spoke Award presented by the National Coalition of Motorcyclists (NCOM). The Award is in the “Special Recognition” category and honors the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum & Hall of Fame for its work in improving the image of motorcycling. The award will be presented at NCOM’s annual convention in Reno, Nevada in May.

“We are extremely honored to be receiving this recognition from NCOM,” said Christine Paige Diers, Executive Director of the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum & Hall of Fame. “We will join a number of exceptional individuals who have received this award in the past.” This is the first time in its history that NCOM has awarded the Silver Spoke for Special Recognition to an organization rather than an individual. Previous winners of the award include a number of notable ABATE members from various states, a long-time NCOM Board member, the AIM Chief of Staff, an author and a publisher.

The National Coalition of Motorcyclists (NCOM) is solely sponsored by the Aid to Injured Motorcyclists (A.I.M.) nationwide legal services program and serves as an umbrella organization for more than 2,000 NCOM Member clubs, organizations and associations worldwide, representing well over a quarter of a million politically active motorcyclists.

The goal and purpose of NCOM is to assist all motorcycle organizations and individual riders with legal, legislative and other motorcycling issues. The Coalition provides numerous FREE services including legislative assistance, nationwide information network, public awareness programs, safety projects, loan program, biker anti-discrimination legal and legislative assistance, etc.

The mission of the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum & Hall of Fame is to collect, preserve, and interpret the history of motorcycling, honor those who have made a positive and significant impact on the sport and lifestyle, and pay tribute to the heritage of the Sturgis Rally. Established in 2001, the museum is home to an ever-growing variety of motorcycles dating back to 1907. On display are a huge selection of American and metric bikes that are on loan from private individuals, along with a wide variety of exhibits, photographs, memorabilia and Sturgis Motorcycle Rally history. Museum memberships are available on the museum’s website at www.sturgismuseum.com.

BIKERNET UNIVERSITY ENGLISH DEPARTMENT LESSON OF THE DAY—Always search for the vertex in everything you do.

vertex VUR-teks, noun:
1. The highest point of something; apex; summit; top: the vertex of a mountain. 2. Anatomy, Zoology. The crown or top of the head. 3. Craniometry. The highest point on the midsagittal plane of the skull or head viewed from the left side when the skull or head is in the Frankfurt horizontal. 4. Astronomy. A point in the celestial sphere toward which or from which the common motion of a group of stars is directed. 5. Geometry. A. The point farthest from the base: the vertex of a cone or of a pyramid. B. A point in a geometrical solid common to three or more sides. C. The intersection of two sides of a plane figure.

When the six-pointed star was laid perfectly over the Great Seal of the United States, the star’s top vertex fit perfectly over the Masonic all-seeing eye…

— Dan Brown, The Lost Symbol

Some way off from its near vertex (which happened to be between terrible Dino and Pemphredo the stinger), I hid behind a shrub of briar to reconnoiter…

— John Barth, Chimera

Vertex stems from the Latin word of the same spelling which meant “a whirl” or “top (of the head).” It comes from the same stem as the word vortex, vert meaning “to turn.” The sense of “the highest point” arose in the 1640s.

THE BIKERNET BLADE CONTROVERSY—I’ve had a very cool hand made sword in my collection for years as a loaner. The craftsman recently asked if I would care to buy it. He asked if I would make him an offer. I called to the mountain to ask my Sensei for advice.

If I saw it at a gun show I doubt I would pay $10 for it. So back to my original thought – no more than $50
Why you may ask? Because there a ton of cool blades out there for that price.
So the only value to you is sentimental — therefore, depends on how generous you are feeling…

The other question is if your grandfather ever gave you a red bicycle, or whether you ever saw your parents having sex, in which case you will need a therapist to truly explore the attachment you may have, or not have, with said sword.

AHDRA Official Announcement–  I don’t really know where to start. This is one of the toughest things I have ever had to do. I guess the best thing to do is just get it out of the way.

The 2013 AHDRA Championship Points Series is cancelled. I am sorry for holding everyone up, but there was potential to work this out, and I wanted to give it my best shot. Unfortunately, it did not materialize.

With our declining sponsorship support, most likely driven by our declining racer and spectator attendance, most likely driven by our crappy economy, we are unable to plan a budget that has a positive bottom line.

This would be the 5th year of negative cash flow for AHDRA and she just can’t stand it financially. Although they were committed to remaining as a presenting AHDRA sponsor for 2013, Harley-Davidson is moving most of its sponsorship spending to the NHRA’s Sportsman series.

Last week’s news from the folks at Rush Racing Products, that they would not be continuing their sponsorship at AHDRA, was the final blow. These were our two largest sponsors and contributed the lion’s share of sponsor revenue for AHDRA.

I want to thank Hawaya Racing, Vreeland’s H-D, Irene Fish, Frank Capone, RC Components, Gainesville H-D and all the others that have committed their support for 2013. However, without the level of support from Harley-Davidson and Rush, we can’t make the numbers work.

I also want to thank Harley-Davidson and Rush Racing Products for their many years of support. Business is business and though I wish it were different, they made their decisions based on what’s best for their future. I have enjoyed working with Kris Schoonover at H-D and Terry Daniel and Lou Pringle at Rush. These were hard decisions for them to make, and I respect their need to make them.

I also want to thank all of the AHDRA members and competitors. You are one great group of people. I have lived and breathed Harley Drag Racing for the past 14 years, and have met some of the finest people I have ever known. You inspired me and kept me going through the good times and the rough times.

Please know that more than anything; you are what I will miss. On the bright side, there’s a bunch of places to race this year. AMRA looks like they have a good schedule. And with the Manufacturer’s Cup Series and NHRA offering several new venues, there should be ample opportunities to race. Maybe there’s even an enterprising entrepreneur out there that would like to take up the reins of AHDRA and run with it! I am open to any and all possibilities……

–Craig Tharpe

AHDRA memberships that were mailed in will be returned and if you signed up online with a credit card your card has not been charged. An official press release with more particulars will be published next week.

35 STATES SO FAR….IT’S GROWING–  Governors of 35 states have filed suit against the Federal Government for imposing unlawful burdens upon them. It only takes 38 (of the 50) States to convene a Constitutional Convention.

For too long we have been too complacent about the workings of Congress. Many citizens had no idea that members of Congress could retire with the same pay after only one term, that they specifically exempted themselves from many of the laws they have passed (such as being exempt from any fear of prosecution for sexual harassment) while ordinary citizens must live under those laws.

The latest is to exempt themselves from the Healthcare Reform that passed … in all of its forms. Somehow, that doesn’t seem logical. We do not have an elite that is above the law. I truly don’t care if they are Democrat, Republican, Independent or whatever . The self-serving must stop.

Proposed 28th Amendment to the United States Constitution: “Congress shall make no law that applies to the citizens of the United States that does not apply equally to the Senators and/or Representatives; and, Congress shall make no law that applies to the Senators and/or Representatives that does not apply equally to the citizens of the United States …”

INDIAN MOTORCYCLE REVS UP NEW YORK MOTORCYCLING FANS AT 2013 INTERNATIONAL MOTORCYCLE SHOW FOR UPCOMING HISTORIC RELAUNCH–‘Indian Summit’ Press Conference featuring Mike Wolfe, creator of American Pickers and Antique Archaeology, Vintage Indian Motorcycles, the Roar of History and the Sound of the Upcoming Completely Reengineered Indian Motorcycle Engine take center stage at IMS-NYC

MEDINA, Minn. — January 16, 2013 — Indian Motorcycle, the original American motorcycle company, today announced its power-packed weekend schedule for this week’s International Motorcycle Show in New York City taking place January 18-20 at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center. Executives from Indian Motorcycle and parent company Polaris Industries will be on-hand throughout the event to engage with motorcycling enthusiasts as the company showcases the entire lineup of 2013 Indian Motorcycle models, including the recently introduced Indian Chief Vintage Final Edition. The stunning new bike is a collectible, limited edition model commemorating the end of one era for the legendary brand and the beginning of the Spirit Lake Iowa era under the stewardship of Polaris Industries.

Motorcycling fans throughout the New York Tri-State area are cordially invited to take part in the must-see event of show — the “Indian Summit” press conference featuring celebrity panelist Mike Wolfe of Antique Archeology and the HISTORY Channel’s “American Pickers” series. Wolfe and top executives from Indian Motorcycle will inform and entertain motorcycle fans and members of the press about everything from Mike’s favorite picks to the company’s exciting plans for the upcoming launch of the all-new Indian Motorcycle — one of the most anticipated and historic events in motorcycling history.

Must Experience: “Indian Motorcycle Experience”
The all-new “Indian Motorcycle Experience” exhibit highlights the brand’s many historic milestones and achievements and features a collection of rarely seen vintage motorcycles and military vehicles, including an exact replica of the Floyd Emde Indian “Big Base” Scout that rode to a dominating victory in the Daytona 200 beach race in 1948. Also on-hand will be the 1935 Indian Chief fully restored by Mike Wolfe and recently featured on “American Pickers.” The display also features a sound booth where attendees can experience firsthand the awe-inspiring sound and power of the upcoming, completely redesigned Indian Motorcycle engine.

Must Hear: Firing up the Munro Special (and the crowd)
Making a very rare appearance on the East Coast, the Indian Motorcycle exhibit will prominently feature the original Burt Munro 1920 Indian Scout (the Munro Special) that broke the under-1000cc land-speed record in 1967 at the Bonneville Salt Flats as famously portrayed in the movie “The World’s Fastest Indian.” Show attendees and members of the press won’t want to miss the opportunity to stop by and listen as the Munro Special — perhaps the most famous and most valuable motorcycle in industry history — is fired up to a deafening roar at the following times throughout the weekend:

– Friday at 2:00 p.m.
– Saturday at 10:30 a.m., 12:00 noon, 2:30 p.m., 5:00 p.m.
– Sunday at 10:30 a.m., 12:00 noon, 2:00 p.m.

BEWARE THE FORCE FACTOR—Since every one in trying to develop a low cost HGH equivalent, it’s become the source of ads everywhere and I was suckered into Force Factor an herbal remedy with a free 14-day offer. Nothing about the offer said anything about charges, or additions. When I received the 14-day free offer that only contained a 7-day supplement package, the fine print said that if you didn’t call within 18 days, you would be charged and sent another batch.

So I was charged and had to fight them to turn it off–not cool. Quick, pass a law.

BIKERNET SENDS A THIRSTY REPORTER TO REVIEW A COFFEE SHOP–
Late last January, during a blizzard on a Sunday night in New York City, I met Rob Camardo at the Ultimate Builder Custom Bike Show while he was promoting his Garage Leathers’ saddlebags. I was talking with him about becoming a sponsor of the Smoke Out Rally, the Choppafest of the East Coast, and while looking at his premium-grade, American-made saddlebags, a pound of his Road Rage Coffee rolled across the floor of his booth.

NEW SAFETY REPORT RELEASED–  The advocates for highway safety released their annual report yesterday, the link is below. Motorcycle helmet recommendations start on page 19.  Nothing new here, this is what we expect this group to say.

From their website: Advocates was founded in 1989 by the heads of a number of major property and casualty insurance companies and several prominent consumer and safety leaders. These two communities share virtually identical goals on highway and auto safety issues.

NEWS FROM THE DOCTOR OF SWORD MAKING–The black wood I use has no botanical name because it is so rare. It is sacred to a very mean bunch of primitives. We took our kilos at gunpoint in an army truck. Heads where seen hanging in the trees.

It is extremely hard. You cannot put a mark in it with your thumb nail no matter how hard you try. Sanded it shines like it has been shellacked. It is extraordinarily difficult to work with.

Detailed carving requires a hand held power dremel, preferably the type dentists use. To make something the size of that stack is very unusual because the wood is marbled in its raw form. We only use the black portions and getting at these without cracking them is an exercise in futility. We once produced a cane in this stuff and someone in the know about the wood thought it must be a fraud, as veins that large are so rare that most of the people who know about this wood claim that black veins that size don’t exist. They do and our cane was real.

Examine the wood closely. It and the inlay, matched with the design are what shines in the piece. The stand fits it well but we didn’t make that, it came from another big knife that I had. I have a chunk of partially marbled stuff here if you’d like to see what it starts as. The black wood is like ore taken out of rocks.

You can show this letter to you buddy in Tibet. It might wise him up. He has never seen this wood unless he has an especially strong knowledge in nearly extinct woods that are so rare that botanists have never named them.

I sweated nights trying to find a supply to work with and when I did Chris and I had major odyssey taking it. The kilos we got were not for sale, it was witch doctor wood that was snatched away at great peril.

BIKERNET MEDICAL CENTER STUDIES EDUCATIONAL FORUM–Bilingual is Better for the Brain–
The ability to speak two languages can help keep an aging brain in better shape than that of a senior who has mastered only one tongue. A new study shows that seniors who have been bilingual since childhood have better cognitive flexibility – which means their brains can deal more easily with new or unexpected circumstances – than can the gray matter of their mono-lingual peers.

Researchers at the University of Kentucky performed brain imaging scans in conjunction with a cognitive flexibility test on 110 seniors in their 60s. Some of the study subjects were bilingual since childhood while the others spoke only one language. Both groups were able to complete the test, but the bilingual seniors finished faster and the imaging studies showed that doing so used less energy in the frontal cortex regions of their brains.

The study was published in the January 9, 2013 issue of Journal of Neuroscience. Another study published in 2011 found that being bilingual apparently slows the progress of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.

My take? If you haven’t been bilingual since childhood, you still have options that may help prevent dementia and Alzheimer’s. I have long recommended staying mentally active as a protective measure. Learning a new language is among a number of strategies you can utilize to keep your mind sharp. I also suggest reading newspapers and books, doing crossword puzzles, playing a musical instrument or taking courses to stretch your mind and keep it active. Regular physical activity can help, too – 30 minutes of aerobic activity most days of the week increases the flow of blood to the brain and can lower the likelihood of Alzheimer’s by 30 to 50 percent.

DREAM CHASER RACIN’ Announces 2013 Schedule of Races–It was an interesting rookie year for Janette Thornley. In her first ever drag race season, she finished 5th in two very competitive Pro Dragster fields. Now it’s time to set a schedule for 2013 and she’s up to the challenge again.

“There’ll be some major changes with my program this year,” says Thornley, “first I’m leaving the nest of Ray Price and the Ray Price Racing team, I can’t begin to thank them enough for their support and assistance but it’s time to stand on my own.” This year, Buddy Foss and Freddie Robbins will comprise the crew for Dream Chaser Racin’. Both fellas have over 25+ years racing experience, Foss worked in the NASCAR circuit so he’s very familiar with need for consistency and attention to detail. Robbins brings tons of experience to the team being both a rider and tuner. “I’m excited to get the two heads together!”

“We’ve arranged an RV for traveling and we will be based in NC so that I can fly in to races from the Northwest. Our trailer will have to be replaced to carry the additional weight of equipment. We are still pulling our schedule together but will likely complete at all the AMRA races and will probably pick up a few additional races throughout the season as time and money will allow.”

March 23-24 AMRA State Capitol Raceway, Baton Rouge, LA
April 27-28 AMRA Beech Bend Raceway,NO TF or Nitro Funnybike, Bowling Green, KY
May 30-June 2 AMRA Mason Dixon Dragway, Hagerstown, Md.
June 29-30 AMRA Beech Bend Raceway, Bowling Green, KY
July 27-28 AMRA Kil-Kare Raceway, Xenia, OH
Sept. 28-29 AMRA Beech Bend Raceway, Bowling Green, KY

Janette Thornley is owner and operator of her nitro burning, carbureted, 121 ci Pro Dragster and Dream Chaser Racin’. She is excited to have added LAT Racing Oils to her list of sponsors as of August 2012. DEFINITION OF A MOTORCYCLE–
What is a motorcycle anyway?
We all know what a motorcycle is, question is do we know what is not a motorcycle? I am not trying to intentionally confuse you. This is a serious question. Look around and you will see many two, three and sometime even four wheeled vehicles all carrying a motorcycle license plate that vaguely resemble a motorcycle.

The motorcycle vehicle category has become a catch all for misfit vehicles that are not traditional cars. This has led the Federal government to refine what a motorcycle is when it comes to accident reporting. The definition in the past has been as loose as “a vehicle with two or three wheels in contact with the ground that is designed to carry one or two individuals.”

The problem with that definition is that it makes no mention of enclosures, riding position over seated position, seat belts, and other add ons that may fit the definition, but is clearly not a motorcycle. In and around Washington DC I have personally noticed vehicles that bear a motorcycle license plate that have a full enclosure, windshield wipers, bench seating, seat belts, doors and windows.
I realize that we are not talking about a great number of vehicles here but it’s important to delineate these vehicles as something other than a motorcycle. Why? Because the motorcycle fatality column on safety reports do not need any additional numbers. We need to make sure that these vehicles remain separate from the motorcycle category.

The Federal definition did improve upon the old definition but falls short in some ways. They created new categories that include break out groups for mopeds, Segways, scooters, motorcycles and motorcycles with enclosures. This gives the States a little more structure when defining two and three wheeled vehicles. But in my opinion anytime a three wheeled vehicle has doors, windows, and a steering wheel, it’s definitely not a motorcycle anymore.

Picture those European and Asian delivery trucks that have one wheel up front and two in the rear. Under the Feds standards those could be considered a motorcycle-with enclosure. We still have some work to do.

Sign the Petition!

A White House petition to ban motorcycle only road side checkpoints has been created. The petition asks the White House to end the funding of the roadside checkpoints. You may be aware that President Obama began his “We The People” initiative back in September of 2011. The idea is that anyone can submit a petition to the White House and if that petition gets more than 25,000 signatures on the website within 30 days the White House will take an official look at the idea and give it an “official response.”

Nothing more is promised than a response. Even if the petition gets 1,000,000 signers, it is still a non binding system. The “We The People” has been used for some serious items such as this, but has also been used to mock some ideas. One such petition asked the White House to build a “Death Star”, Darth Vader’s weapon of mass destruction in the Star Wars movies.

The response from the White House on that one? Not gonna happen.

But this is a serious issue. So take a minute to voice your opinion on the checkpoints by signing this position. The deadline is February 7, 2013.

DEFINITION OF A MOTORCYCLE II–
Regarding the definition of a motorcycle, I would offer a dissenting opinion:

We in SD jumped on this bandwagon around 5 years ago…going after the little Chinese delivery rigs with motorcycle plates but also because we felt the atv accidents were detrimental to our statistics.

There are at least two negative repercussions to going down this road:

1. Our primary goal of reducing the number of motorcycle accidents reported is a double edged sword…true adding these other vehicles adds to our number, but it also gives us an automatic and bulletproof answer to discredit any study…all you have to do is point out that these vehicles were included in the statistics and a legislator will immediately throw it out as flawed.
2. At least here in South Dakota we like to reach out for other organizations to ally with us and strengthen our base…ATVs, Bicycles, moped riders, etc. are a potential asset more than a likely opponent. Most of these groups running our plates are doing so because a segregated class of licensing will end up costing them more….so achieving motorcycle only plates will damage the willingness of these “friendly organizations” to work with us, as we promoted a concept that hurt them.
3. Said atv’s using motorcycle plates have a grey area benefit…the motorcycle related code will obviously have statutes which are not applicable (like having only 2 or 3 wheels being the most obvious so enforcement is hampered. More importantly, they definitely don’t want law enforcement to check them out with a fine tooth comb as the (probably appropriate) rules that would promulgate are undesirable…for example most of their tires are not DOT rated for good reason, they don’t work on dirt…enforcing that one would negatively affect the most common use of the rigs. Is this condoning unsafe behavior???….another very grey area depending on the circumstance….but if they are screwing around on-road they will get a reckless driving ticket or ?? likely, more quickly than the equipment failure would cause an accident; and regardless as long as the state statistician and the reporting cop knows how to fill out the form it is not our problem.

South Dakota has backed away from this concept as a policy statement category issue. Those organizations were beginning to “oppose” proposals we wanted to put forward as they considered us an unfriendly…after a conference and a meeting of the minds, we decided to back off.

Agreed, we don’t like the enclosed cab vehicles classified as motorcycles but thru communication with our DPS who keeps accident records we asked and they did add a classification on accident reports distinguishing these issues but allowing those groups to keep the plates…in our opinion a win/win as the nanny organizations get their prime talking point shot down irrefutably by the fact that the statistic they cite is flawed; and the atv organizations continue to benefit from our cheaper established plates and regulations.

GOOD NEWS FOR TERRY THE TRAMP–  Just wanted to let you know how much I truly enjoyed reading your book on Terry Orendorff. Of particular interest was the historic account of the AMA as well as the origins of MC Clubs back in the day – really excellent material! However, what I found truly alarming were your accounts of the vigilant-style attacks by law enforcement…talk about dark days. Moreover, I had no idea of your history or involvement with ABATE et al…you clearly practice what you preach!

Never stop telling these stories. It is vitally important for the generations who follow to learn about, and appreciate, the freedoms that we/they take for granted. Unfortunately, those very same freedoms, and then some, are again under siege today.

HELLS ANGEL SHOT DEAD IN SYDNEY–   A HELLS Angel was killed and another man wounded in a shooting at the offices of a trucking company in Sydney yesterday afternoon.

Zeljko Mitrovic, a 45-year-old husband and father who worked for Dynamic Transport in Wetherill Park in western Sydney, died at the scene of the attack.

The second man, aged 31, was taken to hospital with a bullet wound in his arm.

Officers from NSW Police Gangs Squad were involved in the investigation last night.

Mr Mitrovic was a member of the Hells Angels and there were unconfirmed reports last night that the business was situated close to an outlaw motorcycle gang clubhouse.

Police said there were reports of a number of shots being fired shortly before 4pm yesterday. Officers were unable to confirm how many suspected shooters were thought to have been involved.

A police strike force, led by detectives from the homicide squad, has been formed to investigate the attack.

The second man, who man was shot in the right arm, was taken to Liverpool Hospital in a stable condition.

Acting superintendent Steve Thomas said the dead man’s family had rushed to the building following news of the shooting.

“The family has been present on the scene, they are very distraught by the situation,” he told reporters.

He would not confirm whether the victims were known to police or whether the incident was linked to previous shootings.

Officers were now looking for a gunman, Mr Thomas said.

“We are looking for a person of interest,” he said. “At this stage the investigation is very early and we are pursuing a number of lines of inquiry.”

UNCLE MONKEY ON DOOMS DAY– Like most people I think I am smarter then the average cookie. I have tackled pretty much any job that has come up. From building houses, to digging dugouts and wells to rebuilding motors I’ve gotten my hands dirty. Though I don’t hunt I have butchered livestock and feel comfortable enough that I could get by and put food on the table for my family if things turn bad. What has brought this about has been the recent doomsday prophecies. I’m not a dooms day prepper, but I think I could cope.

I don’t think the Rapture is going to happen any time soon and the government is too incompetent to really mess stuff up. I think having a plan, any plan is wise, but where do you draw the line.

I’ve always lived in close proximity to a military pilot training facility, so I assume as a strategic strike point the local base would be fairly high. Burying myself in the ground and eating canned beans for three years, until the nuclear fallout is over really doesn’t seem like fun. A blaze of glory rather than my head in the sand.

Most doomsday preppers have vast stock piles of food and water, but I feel a lot safer knowing I could trap and hunt to provide for my family, that I could find enough drinking water in the land rather relying on what I have stored. A shelter can only protect you for so long and you are a sitting target. If you have to bug out of your shelter and relocate I’d rather travel light then trying to move hundreds of gallons of water and canned food.

The most likely scenario we have to deal with is natural disaster. The survivors of Katrina and Sandy can attest to that. The government will not be there to help you or I. Your bomb shelter will be of little use if it and its air supply are under 10 feet of water or swept away by a tsunami.

Here in Canada the extreme cold weather can easily reduce the hardiest man to a frozen Popsicle in no time. I admit, like most people I don’t have a bug out bag though I should. Most natural disasters don’t sneak up on you. The east coast and those in the delta had been told to evacuate but chose to stay. Your home is the safest place during civil unrest. Society breaks down with even the slightest hint of panic. Bunker down and collect your thoughts, your family, and your belongings and hope you still have your freedom on the other side.

AEROMACH TOURS CUBA–  Got back from my Christmas trip to Cuba yesterday. What an awesome experience. I had hoped to find the Cuban Harlistas, the Harley riders that keep their pre-blockade bikes running. I saw tons of little 125s and other strange looking single cylinder bikes. Of course, the most frequent site is a pre-1959 American car. They usually swapped out the gasoline engine for a diesel engine due to the cost of fuel.

One night Molly and I took a 1948 Dodge taxi back to our hotel. The car had no speedometer or any gauges for that matter. The original engine had been replaced by a Hyundai/Kia diesel engine. The car still had that unmistakable old car smell despite the strong smell of raw diesel wafting into the interior. The driver was a well-dressed young guy who spoke quite good English. His grandfather bought the car brand new in 1948.

This country is just so incredible. Places that would be condemned and torn down in the US are homes for tons of Cuban families. It is not uncommon for three generations of one family to live together in a small apartment. The government assigns all homes. Everyone is entitled to health care and education. There are 60,000 students at the university.

There are still ration books in use. Families get 6 pounds of rice per month per person, for instance.

Just so much to comprehend. I loved it there. They have so much history. You can see that Havana had to have been one of the most beautiful cities in the world in its day. I won’t make this a political rant, but, the blockade (embargo) is only causing suffering for the average Cuban citizen. They are so inventive and creative just to survive. We already send apples and other food products to them. Why the hell do we make them suffer by not allowing other trade?

Incidentally, I finally found one Harley on my last day in Havana. It was a 1958 Panhead. I gave my new friend some issues of Cycle Source magazine and a Victory motorcycles hat. Check it out!

BIKERNET DOJO NOW OPEN–I know you’re into martial arts but this really opened my eyes. Was the best $27 I’ve ever spent. Thought I’d share so you can too.

http://www.targetfocustraining.com/

It’s a series of videos and a book. It’s not about combat. It’s how to kill when you’re unexpectedly attacked regardless of the size of the attacker. If you’re not prepared to kill it’s not for folks that aren’t.

It’s hardcore. Not for the faint of heart. I got it so my family will act against any real threat. Even my wife’s into it since no prior training is needed.

For $27 this was a steal. If I had previewed it I would have paid much more.

In this day and age, and where we’re headed (in a hurry) this info is priceless and wanted to share with anyone that has the balls to use it.

Peace Always,

BIKERNET MEDICAL CENTER ALERT: At Last….A Real Cure!–A woman goes to the Doctor, worried about her husband’s temper.

The Doctor asks: “What’s the problem?

The woman says: “Doctor, I don’t know what to do. Every day my husband seems to lose his temper for no reason. It scares me.”

The Doctor says: “I have a cure for that. When it seems that your husband is getting angry, just take a glass of water and start swishing it in your mouth. Just swish and swish but don’t swallow it until he either leaves the room or goes to bed and is asleep.”

Two weeks later the woman comes back to the doctor looking fresh and reborn.

The woman says: “Doctor that was a brilliant idea! Every time my husband started losing it, I swished with water. I swished and swished, and he calmed right down! How does a glass of water do that?”

The Doctor says: “The water itself does nothing. It’s keeping your mouth shut that does the trick….”

BIKERNET BAGGERS CIGAR OF THE WEEK–PURE CLINT SAY SOME!
PURE AMERICAN SAY ALL!

Said to be “pure Clint” by some, and an excellent fishing or deck sitting companion, Kentucky Cheroots are also a big hit with bikers. Not because of their look, which is for-sure American old-West, but because of their solid tobacco flavor, which includes a hint of sweetness from the wrapper.

Some KC smokers cut the things in half for a quick tobacco fix. Yes, they are inexpensive but don’t let that stop you from enjoying this definitely American cigar. An Italian tourist was quoted as saying “Our Toscanos are only slightly better than yours…..but please don’t try to modify yours….they are just perfect.”

Exclusively hand rolled from American grown Tennesee, and Kentucky tobaccos selected for quality, and a robust hearty flavor, the tobacco is cured with hickory-smoke fires, then aged a full 4 months. The taste is pure American.

ST. PETERSBURG — A woman has been charged with stealing a St. Petersburg police cruiser. A police statement says two officers responded to a domestic call Saturday night and left the keys in the ignition. While the officers were busy handling the call, Vanessa Brooks flagged down another driver, reached inside the car and stole the driver’s cell phone.

Brooks then ran toward the police cruiser, got inside and backed up into another marked cruiser before driving away. The police statement says the officers didn’t notice the car missing until they finished the domestic call. Police units in the area were alerted and minutes later, Tampa Police officers found arrested Brooks in a restaurant’s parking lot. The 22-year-old faces charges of vehicle burglary, auto theft, and leaving the scene of a crash.

BIKERNET APPAREL VP ATTENDS DENVER APPAREL SHOW–I was in Denver last week for Branded Bull doing the Western Show. This couple walked into our booth because one of our BB items caught their eye. After learning they had a motorcycle shop I then pulled out a box of Crank & Stroker, 5 Ball, and Bikernet shirts that were not displayed. They liked the shirts and told me they saw the shirts on Bikernet.

After speaking with them I learned the guy was Arlin Fatland, The name sounded familiar, but I did not realize who he was…Then I googled him and man was I surprised.

Towards the end of the show I took some time to go and check out his shop and buy some souvenirs for the wife and kids…It was an awesome shop and Arlin gave me a tour and showed me some of his bikes.

It was the highlight of my whole trip.

Anyways…It’s been a little crazy over the past couple of months..I have to go to Minnesota next week for a couple of days but after that it should clear up and we can get together.

NEW YEAR, NEW LAWS FROM BILL’S COAST TO COAST LEGISLATIVE NEWS FOR JANUARY–  The new year puts new laws on the books across the country, with state and local governments ringing in 2013 with a mix of new laws ranging from the innovative to the odd; one in Kansas City says households can’t have more than four cats, while a town in Massachusetts is banning businesses from selling plastic bottles.

In Florida, drivers can once again flash their headlights to warn others of upcoming speed traps, which was previously outlawed. Meanwhile, driverless cars in California got the green light to hit the public roads, but one of Illinois’ 150 new laws prohibits motorcycle riders from popping wheelies — Public Act 97-743 imposes a fine of $1,000 on anyone who pops a wheelie on a motorcycle while speeding.

Mayor Bloomberg doesn’t have time to help his constituents because he is too busy pushing his anti-gun agenda in Baltimore.

IT’S A WRAP—We are working with IronWorks magazine on a couple of projects, and they may become the magazine sponsor of our news. I’m also working with Tim Remus on a book about our streamlined trike project. My list of stories is daunting, but that’s what I love to do, publish stories about motorcycles and bikers.

This girl (above) just arrived from Jerry Southworth and I looking for a story. If you have a romantic motorcycle story, you think would go with this bike and girl, don’t hesitate to drop me a line. I’ve written an S&S cam install tech, and Bruce, our official copy editor is working his magic. Jeff Najar is working on an interview with Paul James from the factory. Paul has worked in the communications department for a couple of decades, and is an avid road racer.

We also have another feature bike looming, one of the winners from the Long Beach Ultimate Builder Show. And another chapter of the second Chance Hogan book is ready to be published. Plus I have an interview with the new owner of Big Bear Choppers, Simon Scott ready to transcribe. There’s more. Hang on!

This weekend is already jammed, including a community clean-up day Saturday Morning. I don’t want a pickle, I just want to ride my motorcycle.

Ride Forever,
–Bandit
