I’m scrambling like never before. I told you this year was going to be tough, and now we’re down to the gnat’s ass bottom line, Bonneville effort deadline. We are nearing the final hour.
Yesterday, Wednesday, I finally picked up my engine in Torrance, California, just a half hour from the shop. Thanks to Howard Stubbins of G/H Marketing, it made it home. Ray’s top end was removed in San Jose, for new rings, and they are just starting to wire the bike. Tobey’s sport bike Honda is complete with fresh heads in New Jersey and being loaded onto a transport today. It will be delivered the day we leave for Bonneville. Holy shit. Ray doesn’t plan to be back at the headquarters until next Wednesday, the 23rd, the day we depart.
I will pick up our Kendon Trailer on Monday. Good god. Let’s hit the news. I’ll bring you updates at the end.

Here’s an excerpt from the Antique Motorcycle Club of America’s website about the “Big Bertha” and Excelsior Hill Climber engine: In the ’20s, the board-track racing era was coming to an end. Motorcycle competition on these massive, banked structures, some of them more than a mile in length, had grown out of the popularity of bicycle velodromes around the turn of the century. But the expense of maintaining the exposed outdoor structures, together with negative publicity following several high-profile fatalities, forced motorcycle racing to take new directions.
The most obvious move was to flat-track competition, conducted on dirt ovals designed for horse racing. But the other big trend of the 1920s was hillclimb racing.
While riding up hills on roads had been a test of motorcycles from the earliest days of the sport, American-style hillclimb racing quickly developed into a form of near-vertical drag-racing. One at a time, riders would launch specially built motorcycles straight up the face of a steep hill. In the early days, the hill often proved too much, and riders were ranked based on the distance they covered. But for those who cleared the top of the hill, the winner was determined on the basis of the fastest time.
The country’s most prominent motorcycle manufacturers—Harley-Davidson, Indian and Excelsior— waged factory warfare on the boards, hiring the best riders and building exotic, one-of-a-kind machines to claim racetrack glory. In the late teens and ’20s, those teams expanded into hillclimb racing, hoping to demonstrate technological superiority in every form of competition.
One of the rising stars of the new era was Joe Petrali, who had burst upon the racing scene with a win in a prestigious 100-mile board-track race in Altoona, Pennsylvania, in 1925. That win came in a one-off ride aboard a Harley-Davidson factory racer that became available when one of the company’s established stars, Ralph Hepburn, was injured. But Petrali was quickly signed to a factory contract for the rest of the year.
When Harley withdrew from racing at the end of 1925, though, Excelsior, part of the Schwinn bicycle empire, hired Petrali, who immediately proved his worth as a racer, repeating his Altoona victory in 1926 aboard Excelsior’s advanced 45-cubic-inch (about 750cc) SuperX.
In the race shop at Excelsior headquarters in Chicago, Petrali worked with the legendary Arthur Constantine, the man who had designed the SuperX, to develop a new overhead-valve engine for the 45-cubic-inch hillclimb class.
In addition, Petrali combined a crankcase from the SuperX with a set of special racing cylinders developed for the company’s single-cylinder, 30.05-cubic-inch (about 500cc) half-mile racing engines. The main advantage of this “M” type cylinder was that it incorporated an air passage between the cylinder and the pocket containing the inlet-over-exhaust valve configuration. The cylinder, developed by another famed engine designer of the time, Arthur Lemon, helped reduce heat distortion, making for an engine that could be tuned for more power without sacrificing reliability.
With two of the M-style cylinders atop the SuperX bottom end, Petrali created a 61-cubic-inch (about 1,000cc) twin that earned the nickname “Big Bertha.”

FIRST ANNUAL BIG BAGGER SHOW STURGIS RALLY 2012– More than 50 super Baggers participated in the first Annual Big Bagger Show put on by Eddie Trotta and John Shope of Sinister Industries, also sponsored by Bikernet.com and Bikernet Baggers. Also on hand for viewing were two examples of Chris Lees Baggster motorcycles.
Baggsters are Sportster motorcycles that have been converted to the Bagger look but retain the Sportster handling. The show was held at the corner of Lazelle and Fourth Streets and proved to be a prime location after attracting thousands of onlookers, spectators, and bikers.

JUST ANOTHER EXAMPLE OF OVER-GOVERNMENT—Keep in mind, this is a very small project, less than a 5,000 square foot building and a small parking area in the Wilmington marina area.
The City of Los Angeles Harbor Department (LAHD) (also referred to as the Port of Los Angeles [Port or POLA]) has prepared this initial study/mitigated negative declaration(IS/MND) to evaluate the potential environmental impacts associated with the construction and operation of the Wilmington Youth Sailing and Aquatic Center (WYSAC).
As part of the permitting process for LAHD, the proposed project is required to undergo an environmental review pursuant to the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA).
This IS/MND includes a discussion on the proposed project’s effects on the existing environment, and identifies potential avoidance, minimization, and mitigation measures.
LAHD is the lead agency for the proposed project, pursuant to Section 15367 of the CEQA Guidelines, because it has the greatest degree of discretion to approve or deny the proposed project. Approvals of permits include, but are not limited to, final design of public spaces and construction contracts.
In addition to the lead agency, several other agencies have special roles with respect to the proposed project as responsible or trustee agencies. These agencies will use this IS/MND as the basis for their decisions to issue any approvals and/or permits that may be required. The following responsible and trustee agencies may rely on this IS/MND in a review capacity or as a basis for issuance of permits for the proposed project.

LYON TOWNSHIP BUSINESS IS LEADER IN PROPANE VEHICLE TECHNOLOGY–Lyon Township, Oakland County, MI (August 14, 2012) – Icom North America, a leading developer and manufacturer of liquid-injection propane (autogas) systems for commercial and consumer vehicles, has received 17 new U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) certifications for its patented JTG II Propane Liquid Injection bi-fuel systems.
•The new certifications cover approximately 200 2010-2012 General Motors Chevrolet- and GMC-brand light-duty trucks and SUV platforms with 4.8- and 5.3-liter engines. The EPA certifications allow Icom to convert these popular fleet vehicles in the U.S. market for propane/autogas bi-fuel use. Icom chairman, Albert Venezio anticipates up to 10 new hires may be necessary.
•The Chevrolet-brand vehicles include Silverado, Tahoe, Express vans, Avalanche and Suburban. The GMC-brand vehicles include Sierra, Yukon and Savana vans.
•Icom’s JTG II system is now available for over 400 vehicle platforms, the most of any liquid-injection system in the U.S. market. Icom’s total number of EPA certifications now stands at 40.
•Icom’s EPA certifications now cover approximately three million vehicles, primarily Ford and GM fleet vehicles. The company soon expects to receive additional certifications for Ford, GM and Dodge vehicles.
•Mr. Venezio said: “Icom JTG II Systems are installed at quality vehicle up-fitters and installation centers nationally through the Icom Distribution Network partners.”
•“We are continually adding qualified installation centers through our distribution network. Further, Icom works closely with propane fuel supply partners for propane fueling and infrastructure for fleets. Fleets across the country are moving to domestic- and green-propane autogas.”
• Venezio added that Jasper Engines and Transmissions Alternative Fuels Division provided Icom with the GM vehicles for integration. Jasper, founded in 1942, is an Indiana-based, employee-owned company that is one of the nation’s largest remanufacturers of a diverse line of drive-train components.
• The Jasper Alternate Fuels Division was formed 20 years ago and has over 70 installation locations throughout the U.S. “Partnering with Icom allows us to present the latest liquid propane injected technology on the market and enhances the progress we have already made in the alternate fuels arena,” said Ed Zoglman, division manager. A major federal agency is interested in ordering many systems.
•Icom previously had been awarded 23 EPA certifications: two for Ford 6.8-liter E-Series vehicles, 13 for 2009- through 2011-model-year Ford light-duty trucks equipped with 5.4- and 4.6-liter engines covering E-Series vans, Navigators and Expeditions, and eight for all Ford E-Series vans, Expeditions, Crown Victorias, Lincoln Town Cars and Navigators.
•JTG II is an industry-leading propane-injection technology currently used by numerous vehicle manufacturers, noted Ralph Perpetuini, CEO of Icom North America.
•“Icom has had seven years of exceptional growth and is positioned for a huge increase in future sales” Perpetuini said.
•As gasoline prices rise, propane continues to have a cost advantage, with more than 95 percent of the nation’s propane coming from the U.S. and the balance from Canadian sources, further reducing dependence on foreign oil. In certain U.S. states, fleet owners benefit from tax credits or rebates as well.
•“We believe propane – a domestic fuel source — is the most energy-efficient and practical alternative fuel currently available,” Perpetuini said. “Icom JTG II bi-fuel systems allow vehicles to operate primarily on propane, with gasoline as a back-up source and for extended range.”
•Since 2004, Icom North America has been supplying its patented JTG liquid-injection propane systems to leading bus, truck and commercial vehicle manufacturers in the United States. Approximately 150,000 vehicles worldwide have been equipped with the Icom JTG Propane System since 2004. SOUTH AUSTRALIAN PROSECUTOR’S TOUGH ANTI-BIKER STANCE–
The public will thank DPP says newspaper
Adam Kimber’s (South Australia’s new DPP) anti-biker stance in the Supreme Court yesterday will win the Director of Public Prosecutions many new fans writes “Staff writers” in the SA Advertisers Editorial spot.
Police, who have long complained of inadequate sentences for outlaw bikies, will be eager to embrace his comments.
The State Government, still working to finesse its maligned control-order legislation, will be thrilled to have a passionate orator on its payroll.
The public, fearful judges are deaf to their expectations, will thank him for bringing their concerns directly to the bar table.
Mr Kimber’s challenge to the four-month jail terms imposed on nine Finks bikies for a nightclub brawl is certainly to be welcomed. At the same time, it is but the first step in a much longer battle.
It is one thing for a newly appointed public servant to make a splash and grab some headlines by tackling a hot-button issue.
It is another thing entirely for that same public servant to back up their passionate debut with persistent effort.
In dubbing the Finks MC members, reprehensible, violent, abhorrent and unbridled thugs, Mr Kimber said what all law-abiding citizens have been thinking.
All the fine words in the world will not, however, make the bikie problem go away.
Only vigorous prosecution, strong evidence and tough sentencing can do that.
Mr Kimber is essential to making these things a reality.
He must ensure the prosecutors in his office are fearless in their pursuit of gang members.
He must lead by example and continue petitioning the courts for severe penalties – and, when he fails, challenge those rulings in the appeal courts.
He must work closely with police to ensure their evidence-gathering techniques survive the poking and prodding of clever defence counsel.
Police can ill afford another wave of aborted prosecutions such as the affray allegations of Vince Focarelli and Michael Sfyris – nor can taxpayers continue to foot the expense of such mistakes.
Mr Kimber’s address is an encouraging sign for criminal justice in this state.
But if his comments are just that – mere comments – his stock will be no higher than other law-and-order proponents of the past decade.

“It’s been a little cold this last week or so. So I’ve been using one of these 10 hrs a day to stay warm,” Tobey said this week while on his job in 100 degree heat.
He’s waiting on his 1000 cc Honda sportbike motorcycle to be delivered from New Jersey. It might arrive on the day we are planning to cut a dusty trail for Bonneville.
SUPPORT THE MRF OR DIE—Lots of motorcycle rights organizations are falling due to declining memberships. Some folks blamed it on the economy, but that’s not the issue. Sturgis grew this year, and it ain’t cheap. Maybe folks are losing their hope in any government process. Maybe folks are too busy, but…
We wouldn’t have helmet free states, almost 30 of them without motorcycle rights organizations. We would have motorcycle checkpoints on every corner if it wasn’t for Motorcycle rights organizations. You can bet we would all be facing smog tests, anti-tampering laws, noise restrictions, and even motorcycle bans, if it wasn’t for motorcyclist rights organizations.
These folks work hard, but they also party and ride hard. Take a look, take the time, and join a motorcycle riders organization or the Motorcycle Riders Foundation.

DEFINE FREEDOM–I’ve had a quandary bugging me for some time. Once in while I’m sitting with someone and I mention how we need to support Freedom, and they look at me aghast. “Freedom what?” They say incredulously. “Everything must be regulated.” That’s when I look at them aghast…
So what’s the problem? For instance the general media seems to be in favor highly restrictive gun regulations, and they seem to like helmet laws. That always startles me. What if a legislative body determined that violent films and coverage of violent crimes was a detriment to the safety of the masses and attempted to tell the media how to act, in a legislative fashion? How would that fly?
So, here’s the homework assignment, and believe me I would love to be the writer. Can someone, is it possible, would anyone listen, or can we make a difference, by sculpting with words, three or more paragraphs capable of uplifting Freedom to national prominence once more. For some odd reason, my positive attitude tells me the world might listen. –Keith R. Ball

I now have the engine, a 1940 45 flathead with a K-model top end. I’m working with D&D on the exhaust configuration.

FOLLOW UP ARTICLE COMING TO BIKERNET– I was thinking about writing a follow up article on “Bikernet Marriage Counseling 101.” It’s been over 10 years and all of what I wrote about still holds true-more than ever.

UNCLE MONKEY SURVIVES STURGIS– It is hard to believe people have never been to Sturgis. I understand that money and times get tight but the Black Hills Rally is a must do for anyone who rides.
Driving through the Black Hills and Mount Rushmore just isn’t the same in the sealed confines of an automobile. These highways were made for bikes, to be at one with the grandeur that Mother Nature can only create.
The town of Sturgis is a people watching delight. Thousands of riders from around the world descend on the area. From the people next door to the strange and wonderful, riders come in all shape and sizes.
Downtown bars thump a wide variety of music pulling people in to watch the wet t-shirt contests or just to chat up the bar tenders, always beautiful, always scantily clad. The big campgrounds like The Full throttle and the Legendary Buffalo Chip continue to lure the big crowds with big name concerts and venders and the added benefit of not having to worry how we would ride home.
Its been a few years since I been to Sturgis and it felt good to be back on the twisting roads and grand canyons and man’s might to literally move mountains. Snow White held her own and drew attention everywhere she went. I want to give a special thanks to everyone who said hi. We had great weather all week and found traffic to be constant but light on the highways. If you’ve never been to the Black Hills now is the time to plan to be there next year.

LEE PARKS TRAINING PROGRAMS– He created “Total Control” (motorcycle school), kind if a cross between a conventional rider course and a track day… among other things.
He and the MSF are not friends. He submitted a proposal to “run” the Florida rider ed program, the MSF took exception.
He is in Denver with the Iron Butt Association (annual awards banquet). He was talking to John Bolin and the MRF came up in conversation. John had him pull up our website and pointed out that I was in Denver. So Lee called me. He wants to talk about things that are happening in motorcycling and the motorcycling industry. He has expressed an interest in attending The Meeting of the Minds, MOTM, next month.
Everybody should try to make it. This is an important year.

9th ANNUAL AMD World Championship of Custom Bike Building – Class winners–
Boccin Custom Cycles, Italy, take Modified Harley-Davidson AMD World Championship win at Sturgis Motorcycle Rally following their triumph at the AMD World Championship program affiliate event at the National Motor Museum at Beaulieu, England in June, Boccin Custom Cycles (B.C.C. – www.boccincustomcycles.com) have become Modified Harley-Davidson World Champions at the 9th annual AMD World Championship of Custom Bike Building at the 2012 Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in August.
Based on a 1946 Harley-Davidson Knucklehead engine and frame, Lorenzo Solighetto’s much admired “Knuckle ’46” was chosen by World Championship fellow competitors and selected VIP judges to have built the stand-out ‘Class of 2012’ custom in the Harley-Davidson sponsored class.
Their win scoops them a first prize of a Screamin’ Eagle 120R engine for their next project.
Second place was taken by noted Hamburg, Germany, based ‘retro’ specialist Uwe Ehinger (Ehinger Kraftrad – www.ehingerkraftrad.com) with “Snow Racer”, a 1936 VLH engined, rigid framed Harley that features 1946 U heads in combination with a German made NH Power primary belt drive, Baker 6-into-4 gearbox with French made Beringer inboard brakes.
Third place was taken by Joe Cooper of Buckley, Washington, USA, (Cooper Smithing Co – www.coopersmithingco.com) with “Gun Baby”, a 1996 XL 883 featuring Buell front end wheels and brakes and a stunning acid etched finish by Tony Morgan (www.gunbabygraphics.com).
AFT takes AMD World Championship Performance Custom Class win for second straight year at Sturgis Motorcycle Rally
AFT Customs of Jackson, California (www.aftcustoms.com) won the Performance Custom Class at the AMD World Championship of Custom Bike Building for the second year running (recently featured on Bikernet) – the first time any custom bike builder has retained a Championship crown since Roger Goldammer took a second World Championship FreeStyle win in 2005, and one of two winners to achieve it at this year’s 9th annual AMD World Championship (the other was in the Production Manufacturer Class).

Called “Halia”, the winning Honda VT 750 BR engined ‘Street Tracker’ was built by the ‘AFT Girls’ – a group of female motorcycle enthusiasts and part-time models who have trained at college and at Jim Guiffra’s AFT Customs to hone their workshop and custom motorcycle skills to great effect!
The class was closely fought, with competitors and selected VIP judges voting an unprecedented three-way tie for the win in the class, with the one, two, three determined by judging preference count-back.
Second place was taken by Steve Garn (BREW Bikes of Creston, North Carolina, USA – www.brewracingframes.com) with “9605” (the bike’s race number) a race prepared 1971 Honda CB 350 that has set class mile records which only cost some $1,800 in bought parts!
Third in the class was taken by noted Big Twin performance engineer Curt Winter (BTRmoto – www.btrmoto.com) of Hayward, California, whose “BTR GP” featured a Harley-Davidson Twin Cam 88 engine in a custom trellis race-style frame with aluminum swingarm, inverted Showa front-end and proprietary BTR 5 speed drivetrain.

PARTS UNLIMITED TO KICK OFF THEIR OWN LINE OF SHOWS– Parts Unlimited Withdraws From Dealer Expo
Just weeks before the annual National Vendor Presentation in Madison, Wis., Parts Unlimited/Drag Specialties has announced plans to withdraw from the 2013 Dealer Expo to focus on launching two new regional dealer showcases in 2013.
“We will not be displaying at the 2013 Indianapolis Trade Show,” says Lemans VP of sales Greg Blackwell. “We feel that we can no longer justify the cost to participate.”
The distributor will produce a West Coast Regional Showcase March 23-24, 2013 in Anaheim, Calif., and a Northeast Regional Showcase April 6-7, 2013 in Valley Forge, Penn.
“Our plan is to produce a Reno Style Showcase where we will feature over 200 vendor booths in each of these shows,” says Blackwell. “We will host a Saturday afternoon Rep/Dealer preview, a Saturday evening Meet & Greet and a Sunday Showcase.”

Time is flying, no shit Sherlock. Seems the current 124-inch, Twin Cam Turbo-charged Bonneville project started at least a year ago and we now have one week and a couple of precious days to pull the, on occasion, the illusive Turbo-charged speeding bullet out of the dusty black top hat.
This afternoon our Spyke starter and charging system arrived via a uniformed driver to the front door. Thank you Mr. Wizard…Also Many thanks to UPS, Fed Ex and the U S Mail.
Ever day is magical at Beach Racing, regardless of the minor set backs, Mike Corbin’s Merry Band of Magicians in Hollister are waiting for our start up in Napa to install the body work. We have the fuel tank at Beach Racing ready to plumb for start up. As of today we are re-scheduling start up for Monday or Tuesday.
Monday at first light the call came in from Randy at Hyperformance, “we made a minor mistake and set the piston clearances to tight. Thanks for an honest man and a long time friend for the heads-up call. Brad and I removed the top end in an hour or so Monday evening. Fresh rings are now in hand, we’ll hone to the required .005 for the perfect fit. Paul Hannans Machine shop in Hayward is standing by.
Ray Whitehead and his crew at Pegasus Performance are completing the air plenum and mounting pieces for final assembly.
Seems most of the major components are in hand or in the mail scheduled for arrival by Friday or Saturday. Just in time for a weekend with final assembly in mind. No more back ups allowed. Then we tune in Napa Monday or Tuesday…haul ass to Mike Corbins for the body work. Hauls ass to to my bed in Wilmington for the first time since July 3rd. Home suddenly sounds wonderful.
Then we load and haul ass to the BUB Speed Trials.

As the #6 ranked magazine within the Transportation/Motorcycle category in Barnes & Noble, RoadRUNNER produced increased newsstand sales resulting in more retail sales revenue than three of the most prominent motorcycle magazines.
This is in line with the Motorcycle Industry Council’s (MIC) figures from 2011 supporting the fact that touring is now the biggest motorcycling consumer segment.

RIGHTS ACTIVISTS LABELLED TERRORISTS– Long-serving National Coalition of Motorcyclists board member Glen Fengstad of ABATE of Montana (Co-Director, NCOM Region III) submitted the following news item from www.rt.com along with the observation that “I think it targets all of us to a tee”:
Are you suspicious of federal authority? How about really into individual liberty? Well according to a new study funded by the US Department of Homeland Security, you very well might be a terrorist. A report published earlier this year by the National Consortium for the Study of Terrorism and Responses to Terrorism (START) at the University of Maryland has surfaced, and in their DHS-funded findings, Americans “reverent of individual liberty” and others adamant about protecting their personal freedoms are categorized as extreme right-wing terrorists.
In the paper, “Hot Spots of Terrorism and Other Crimes in the United States, 1970-2008”, researchers characterize what traits should be considered when describing right-wing terrorists, and identifies “groups that believe that one’s personal and/or national ‘way of life’ is under attack,” and those that are “suspicious of centralized federal authority” and “believe in conspiracy theories that involve grave threat to personal liberty,” the report adds.
START was founded with the aid of a $12 million DHS grant, and their most recent report is described by its authors as the latest part in a series of studies sponsored by the Human Factors/Behavioral Sciences Division, Science and Technology Directorate and the US Department of Homeland Security in support of the Counter-IED Prevent/Deter program: “The goal of this program is to sponsor research that will aid the intelligence and law enforcement communities in identifying potential terrorist threats,” write the authors, which is done “using state-of-the-art theories, methods and data from the social and behavioral sciences to improve understanding of the origins, dynamics and social and psychological impacts of terrorism.”
Apparently, loving America is precisely one of those factors found out through the latest space-age understanding of the human mind.

ROGUE CHECKS IN FROM THE BADLANDS– I got back from Sturgis late last night, 5886.9 miles round trip. I serviced and cleaned the motorcycle and of course used Spectro Golden SAE 20w50. I do not like to go over my normal mileage for oil changes. But sometimes I have to and I rely on Spectro.

THE BONNEVILLE SCRAMBLE—I asked myself, “Why has everything become so last minute?” I’m not even going there. The key is attitude, and we are having a blast. What could be more fun for a bunch of old bikers but to pull together three hot rod motorcycles and fly out to the Bonneville Salt Flats.
We are all pumped to the max and working our asses off. Dr. Willie just left Compu-Fire and is bringing me a solenoid push starter-button for the Bonne Belle. Richard Kranzler is on his way to the headquarters in our new 2004 1500 Express van from Tacoma. The guys at Wellington are working on our vinyl Bikernet siding for the van. Andy at Crank and Stroker is printing our 5-Ball racing team t-shirts. Nyla just ordered the racing team ball caps. She dialed in our hotel reservations at the Wendover Nugget today.
This is turning into a damn exciting year. Remember the creed: Be too strong to let anything disturb your peace of mind. But wait, we’re broke. Ah, fuck it. Let’s roll. We have plenty of Empire Jerky from Brian Ingraham. We’ve tested it. It’s amazing. Quick, buy the Bikernet Hearse.
