THE BORN FREE THURSDAY NEWS FOR JULY 5, 2012

Hey,

I’ve got a quandary I believe needs to be discussed. Michael Lichter recently turned me on to a web site made up of motorcycle scholars. I wanted to put this question to them, and maybe Bikernet readers can help me position it.

I believe this is a core issue within our society: the notion of Freedom. We mention freedom in every description regarding the United States, but, as you know Freedom is considered a joke by many who expect the government to handle all aspects of life.

So, the question is: Is this a Free country, and can we inject freedom back into the equation? I’ll give you an example. We started the EPA because of the smog in our air. They have been very successful in curbing air pollution, and we congratulate them for their efforts. But, do they need to control everything related to air pollution? Do they work for us, or do they control all aspects of our air related lives, no matter how important or meaningless? Can they make it illegal for you to work on your car?

I believe two things: Government bureaucracies have learned how to work the system to build their budgets and justify their growing levels of control. And I believe that with Freedom injected into the equation we can curb this growth, ad the human element back into the equation, and force agencies to work with the people and not overtly attempt to control them. In other words, there could be balance and freedom restored. What the hell do you think?

BIKERNET UNIVERSITY FINDINGS: The new data is in– Vodka and ice damages the kidneys.  Rum over ice causes liver damage.  Whiskey on ice is bad for your heart. Gin & ice causes brain damage. Chardonnay with cubes of ice is bad for your joints. Coke and ice is bad for your teeth.

Warn everyone you know immediately: the damned ice is deadly!!?

I recently read a citizen complaint about loud motorcycles. They scared the citizen’s kid, and disturbed the small animal hunting practices in the park. Good god.

Sinwu bought a new, over-the-shoulder Oreck vacuum cleaner two days ago. She went crazy with that noisy bastard, cleaning all the stairways in the Bikernet Headquarters. I was force to listen to it for hours. I decided to write my legislator. We need to do something about loud appliances. They are scaring our pets, and insects trying desperately to forage for food. Quick, pass a law. –Renegade

AUSSIE CLUBS AGREE TO TEAM UP FOR LEGAL FIGHT AGAINST MOUNTING POLICE POWERS–Motorcycle clubs from across Australia have agreed to work together in the face of mounting pressure from police armed with new legislation that will make it harder for the clubs to operate.

Clubs from South Australia, Western Australia, NSW and Queensland met in Brisbane last week to discuss sharing funds and legal resources.

At a subsequent meeting of the United Motorcycle Council of NSW, held in western Sydney last night, the clubs began actively raising money to fund any potential legal challenge.

A four-page letter recently circulated among NSW’s bikers said “the police are ramping up their attacks on the clubs” and “members need to step up to meet these challenges”.

So seriously are they taking the threat that senior Hells Angels have consented to contact being made with the Nomads to offer assistance before the first court test of new “consorting” legislation this week. This is despite a an alleged feud between the clubs, which police claim is behind a series of shootings in Sydney.

Motorcycle clubs in Queensland are also fundraising for a potential legal challenge to a bid by the police to have the Finks club declared a criminal organisation. If successful, this could prevent individual Finks meeting or visiting their clubhouse.

The letter, sent by the United Motorcycle Council to about 20 clubs across NSW, said that “concerted police attacks” meant clubs needed to change the way they operate in order to survive.

“The police are ramping up their attacks on the clubs,” the letter said. “Their . . . behaviour is increasing and the amendments to the Crimes Act and the Tattoo Parlours Act are nothing short of disgraceful. The challenges are now much greater than before and members of the UMC need to step up to meet these challenges.”

BANDIT’S DAY ROLL REVIEWED–  What the heck? You mean it can’t handle a 2-hour ride, wind blown up against a 100+ watt highbeam headlight? It is also not water tight in a monsoon.

Other then that it is a rocking item, I was surprised that it melted then I remembered I have no low beam right now.

HINES VICTORY AT ROUTE 66 KEEPS HARLEY WIN STREAK ALIVE–Second Win for Hines is Fifth in a Row for Screamin’ Eagle Team in 2012 JOLIET, Ill. (July 1, 2012) – The Harley-Davidson® Screamin’ Eagle/Vance & Hines team remains undefeated in 2012 as rider Andrew Hines rode his Harley-Davidson V-Rod to the Pro Stock Motorcycle win at the O’Reilly Auto Parts Route 66 NHRA Nationals at Route 66 Raceway. The win is the second for Hines in 2012 and the fifth in a row for the team in five events this season. Hines defeated GT Racing Suzuki rider LE Tonglet in the final.

“I was really feeling the pressure when we went to line for the final round,” said Hines. “I wanted to win because this is the closest race to Harley-Davidson headquarters in Milwaukee and we had a lot of fans down here. And we’ve never had a winning streak like this before, undefeated this season and really seven in a row going back to last season. That’s really special and I don’t want this moment to end.”

Hines qualified his Screamin’ Eagle Harley-Davidson V-Rod in second position with an Elapsed Time of 6.917 seconds. Krawiec qualified the team’s other V-Rod fourth at 6.941 seconds. Lucas Oil Buell rider Hector Arana Sr. was the top qualifier at 6.884 seconds.

Hines moved through the elimination rounds with a win over Sovereign-Star Racing Buell rider Scott Pollacheck in round one, an automatic win in round two when Kuryakyn Buell rider Chip Ellis fouled at the start, and a win over Hector Arana Jr. on a Lucas Oil Buell in the semi-final round.

Tonglet had won the last two events at Route 66 and had won 11 consecutive elimination rounds at the track. But the Suzuki rider went for a quick light and left the starting line 0.004 seconds early to hand Hines the automatic win and his 27th career final-round victory.

“I had the performance advantage on him, so I’m sure he was trying to cut a good light,” said Hines. “After the last race I re-wired my V-Rod because we thought there was an electrical issue, and we had a chance to test both bikes. We’ve got a pair of strong-running Harley-Davidson motorcycles right now.”

Krawiec opened Sunday’s rain-delayed elimination rounds with a win over Matt Guidera on the Harley-Davidson of Folsom Buell. Krawiec lost in round two on a holeshot to Tonglet, who used a 0.022-second reaction time and a 6.993 ET to beat Krawiec’s 0.048/6.971 run by just 0.0047 seconds.

“The track was good today but a little tricky, and we had to pull a little clutch out of my bike,” said Krawiec. “When we do that I find it’s harder to hit the tree, so my reaction times were not where I wanted to be today. I really just lost a good drag race to Tonglet.”

Krawiec retains the NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle points lead, leaving Route 66 with 522 points. Hines remains in second place with 447 points. Arana Sr. moves up to third place with 383 points, followed by Arana Jr. with 381 points. Tonglet is fifth with 292 points.

The Pro Stock Motorcycles will be in action again on July 5-8 at the 6th Annual Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Nationals at Summit Motorsports Park in Norwalk, Ohio.

BOUNCE THIS ALONG– U.S. Postal service sent out a message to all letter carriers to put a sheet of Bounce in their uniform pockets to keep yellow-jackets away.

Use them all the time when playing baseball and soccer. I use it when I am working outside. It really works. The insects just veer around you.

All this time you’ve just been putting Bounce in the dryer!

1. It will chase ants away when you lay a sheet near them. It also repels mice.

2. Spread sheets around foundation areas, or in trailers, or cars that are sitting and it keeps mice from entering your vehicle.

3. It takes the odor out of books and photo albums that don’t get opened too often..

4. It repels mosquitoes. Tie a sheet of Bounce through a belt loop when outdoors during mosquito season.

5. Eliminate static electricity from your television (or computer) screen.

6. Since Bounce is designed to help eliminate static cling, wipe your television screen with a used sheet of Bounce to keep dust from resettling.

7. Dissolve soap scum from shower doors. Clean with a sheet of Bounce.

8. To freshen the air in your home – Place an individual sheet of Bounce in a drawer or hang in the closet.

9. Put Bounce sheet in vacuum cleaner.

10.Prevent thread from tangling. Run a threaded needle through a sheet of Bounce before beginning to sew.

11. Prevent musty suitcases. Place an individual sheet of Bounce inside empty luggage before storing.

12. To freshen the air in your car – Place a sheet of Bounce under the front seat.

13. Clean baked-on foods from a cooking pan. Put a sheet in a pan, fill with water, let sit overnight, and sponge clean. The anti-static agent apparently weakens the bond between the food and the pan.

14.Eliminate odors in wastebaskets. Place a sheet of Bounce at the bottom of the wastebasket.

15. Collect cat hair. Rubbing the area with a sheet of Bounce will magnetically attract all the loose hairs.

16. Eliminate static electricity from Venetian blinds. Wipe the blinds with a sheet of Bounce to prevent dust from resetting.

17. Wipe up sawdust from drilling or sand papering. A used sheet of Bounce will collect sawdust like a tack cloth.

18.Eliminate odors in dirty laundry. Place an individual sheet of Bounce at the bottom of a laundry bag or hamper.
19. Deodorize shoes or sneakers. Place a sheet of Bounce in your shoes or sneakers overnight.

20. Golfers put a Bounce sheet in their back pocket to keep the bees away.

21. Put a Bounce sheet in your sleeping bag and tent before folding and storing them. It will keep them smelling fresh.

22. Wet a Bounce sheet, hose down your car, and wipe love bugs off easily with the wet Bounce.

23. Put a sheet of Bounce in your suitcase when traveling, it will
help keep mites or any other critters out of it. While you are at it, travel with several Bounce sheets and run them up and down your bed linen before getting into bed, it will cause all the critters already in your bed to run. Keep a sheet in your suitcase even after you have unpacked to protect your suitcases from bugs nesting in it.

Quick, bounce this on within the next 5 minutes! Nothing will happen if you don’t, but your friends will be glad to hear these hints!

BAD COP RESEARCH CENTER OPEN–  This is exactly what I have been trying to show people with my Bad Cop notices.  This is going on everywhere there are cops.
They break the law and Nothing Happens to them. Well other than staying Home And Getting Paid.

Officer continues to beat system
Opa-locka cop keeps certification despite numerous charges  By Julie K. Brown The Miami Herald

Opa-locka has the dubious distinction of employing the cop who can’t be fired. Though the city keeps on trying. Sgt. German Bosque of the Opalocka Police Department has been disciplined, suspended, fined and sent home with pay more than any officer in the state. He has been accused of cracking the head of a handcuffed suspect, beating juveniles, hiding drugs in his police car, stealing from suspects, defying direct orders and lying and falsifying police reports. He once called in sick to take a vacation to Cancún and has engaged in a rash of unauthorized police chases, including one in which four people were killed.

Arrested and jailed three times, Bosque, 48, has been fired at least six times. Now under suspension pending yet another investigation into misconduct, Bosque stays home and collects his $60,000-a-year paycheck for doing nothing. Before he was ever hired in Opalocka 19 years ago, Bosque was tossed out of the police academy twice and fired from two police departments. Each time he has been reinstated with back pay. He boldly brags about his ability to work a law enforcement system that allows bad cops to keep their certification even in the face of criminal charges.

THE ADRENALINE CLOCK IS TICKING
Speed Week Bonneville, 41 Days
BUB Speed Trials Bonneville, 54 days

Last week started like we were shot out of a cannon securely mounted port side on a Battle Ship Iowa with a full charge of powder sittin’ off the coast of Viet Nam in the heat of the battle on the 4th of July. INCOMING……..

http://www.spykeinc.com

This has been one helleva week in the belly of the happy monster we call life, which is not new around Bikernet Headquarters and the Cantina. Around here we specialize in sunshine, mixed with hot and cold running, scantily clad young southern California starlets parading through the polished hallways lookin’ for a job in the dusty Cantina. It’s hard on a guy trying to concentrate at times. Interviewing will kick your ass after a full day of, well you know. Interviewing. The girls of Bikernet are hand picked, like ripe honey dew melons fresh off of the vine.

Gasser and pat her on the Ass!

Can you imagine sitting around all day on you keister watchin the grass grow? Unless you’re a horticulturalist in the fast growing Medical industry, watchin’ the grass grow under your ass might be a serious waste of time.

Fire up the trusty hot rod, pat your sweetheart on the ass, fill-er-up and haul ass any direction, you will, some-how, find a gas station. Works every time, damn near.

The EVENT of the CENTURY!

Thursday evening with Bandit behind the wheel, Michael Lichter riding shotgun and I’m stashed in the back seat of the hearse with a non-working door handle. Cruised down the street with a GPS guiding the way, , we made a left turn in a factories parking area to check our location? Bandit turned around and headed for the street, BINGO! directly across the street. We rolled in parked and lined up for a guest pass to THE EVENT of the CENTURY hosted by MOTORCYCLIST magazine in Bandit’s, Bikernet, lowered, black Hearse. The Bike of the last 100 years award, The Honda 750 and what an iconic bike, rode one many a time in the early ‘70s. The era was a blurrrrrrrrrrr and the bike was fast.

MALCOLM SMITH
After the awards ceremony ran into the Rider of the last 100 Years, Malcolm Smith. What an honor to meet such an incredible, life long, still rides, in an event last week, motorcycle fanatic. Watching the movie, On Any Sunday resulted in my ending up deep in the heart of Mexico, pit crewing for a bike team in the Baja 1000, we finished the race.

Here’s a quick update on our 5-Ball Racing Team Bonneville build in Rick Tedders shop, Salem, Oregon.

This past week Rick added a neck brace to help keep the rocket in a straight line under power. Fork stops are effective and cool. Also fabricated a support for under the transmission for a bed rock solid foundation. Fabricated swingarm gussets doubling as foot peg (multiple position) mounts. The engine will come out of the frame with the primary cover and transmission connected. Our exhaust header for the Turbo was reamed out thoroughly then ceramic coated inside and out with a .004 thick layer and waiting for a Monday pick up.

Over 10,000 IN ATTENDANCE WITH CHOPPERS FROM END TO END

It’s early, as in 1:30 am Sunday after attending the coolest one day event since sliced bread was invented. The event BORN FREE 4 was held next to a Lake Irvine located on the Oak Canyon Ranch in Silverado, CA. The event reminded me of the Sturgis City Park in the late ‘70s, early ‘80s. GREAT event to say the least. Looking forward to next year. Willie G. Davidson was seen wandering through the crowd.

HOKA HEY REPORT–FACING ADVERSITY IS WHAT IT’S ALL ABOUT–
A few hours ago we completed the live Q&A on the Hoka Hey Motorcycle Challenge business page on Facebook and I wanted to be sure to let everyone know that if you weren’t able to join us in real time the threads from yesterday and today remain for your review. However, if you are not a member of Facebook I want to repeat some things that (I feel) are important to note.

First let me start by reiterating that we are attempting to build a brand with the Hoka Hey Motorcycle Challenge, and this has been a test of our own fortitude as much as any of our riders and we are grateful to everyone that supports us in this endeavor. As I’ve said before, I am an Environmental Scientist and Jim is a Tribal Attorney. Until we started promoting the Hoka Hey Motorcycle Challenge in 2008, neither one had any experience in promotions or in long distance motorcycle events. Admittedly, we have been on a bit learning curve but we are getting most of the bugs worked out in an effort to make the Challenge a world-class event.

But it is not just about us, or the event. Sometimes in the hype of dealing with the good, the bad, and the ugly; people forget about our ultimate mission which is to bring awareness to the plight of the Indian people on the remote reservations. Most specifically, Pine Ridge Reservation since it is the poorest region in the country and it is right in our own back yard! So, while we may not agree on everything that has happened in the past, as it regards the event, let us all agree that something needs to be done about the poverty within the boundaries of the United States and that the grim statistics surrounding the reservations present a compelling argument for our unbending desire to use the HHMC to make some small difference.

There were a couple of doubters online with us during the Q&A, and I tried to address their concerns but I know we are probably never going to convince the nay-sayers and the haters. Some people will believe everything they read on the internet without any proof, one way or the other. They choose what they want to believe. We acknowledge that the HHMC does go against the grain and not everyone likes that about us. But that is OK… To each his own.

On the other hand, I have to say “Thanks” to everyone who does believe in the HHMC. I want you to know that we are doing our best to earn your trust and belief. But, I say again… This is not about us; it is about the people on the Indian Reservations who need something to hope for.

Maybe the actual controversy over the HHMC doesn’t help the young people on Pine Ridge but perhaps, without trying, the HHMC has allowed us to become an example of how difficult it can be to stand for what you feel is right. At a great deal of personal cost to us and our families; the HHMC hasn’t come cheap. And it certainly hasn’t been easy to carry on in the face of so much adversity. But, I suppose that is one of life’s hardest lessons after all.

When I signed off today; I tried to put my finger on the most critical aspect of the HHMC, and I don’t know that I was able to convey the sentiment adequately. What I tried to say is that the HHMC IS about facing adversity. It is about carrying on no matter how difficult things become. The teenage suicide rate on the Pine Ridge Reservation is 150% higher than the U.S. national average for this age group and these young people NEED something to hope for. If we can serve as an example of what it means to adapt and overcome then so be it. We admit to our mistakes and try to correct them if we can. But the HHMC will not reward cheating nor condone bending the rules to get ahead.

People ask what’s wrong with the youth today? Well, I have a clue. I feel that it is because too few adults set the correct example. Right or wrong, the example we intend to set is one of perseverance, dedication, hard work, commitment, honor and integrity. If that is too difficult to understand then this event is not for you.

–Hoka Hey!

If it is for you then we still have space available with just 30 days to gear up!

Contact us now to register for the event that continues to change lives & shape ideas.

BURLY MX STYLE FOOT PEGS– Billet aluminum is nice for big airplanes and your dad’s bagger, but steal is the real deal and the new MX style pegs from Burly are just that. Inspired by the bear trap style of the ‘70s motocross machines and designed to fit your Sporty or Dyna.

Adjustable angle will let you tune them to your liking and serrated edge will keep your feet planted. TIG welded for strength and powder coated satin black to blend nicely with your bike. The Burly guys figured while they were at it, a bottle opener might be a nice touch, too.

Thanks Burly, we like a peg that can multitask.

BORN TO BE MILD— Hundreds of bikers stage go-slow protest along A1.

Hundreds of motorcyclists riding north along the AI from Durham to the Washington services, as part of a national Motorcycle Action Group protest against proposed new European regulations about modifications to motorbikes and scooters.

FOUR hundred bikers staged a go-slow on the A1 in protest against a new European law.
The Motorcycle Action Group (MAG) brought the cyclists together yesterday to show their opposition to the EU legislation, which aims to restrict modifications to new machines in the future.
North East MEP Stephen Hughes helped start the event, before the bikers headed from the Park and Ride at Carrville in Durham, on to the A1, and dispersing at Washington Services.

Rachel Leonard, who was one of the organizers, said: “It went really well and I think we really got our point across.”

WINDSHIELD REVIEW–had a decent trip back from Rockingham and the Smoke Out. I bought a new high windshield before making the trip.
Guy makes ‘em out in the Dakotas and sells them on ebay for $45 shipped.

Sharp product. I nailed a blackbird at 70 mph. It hit square on the shield. I was not injured in any way, the windshield was a mess, but after I wiped it off it wasn’t even scratched, bird was not so lucky. With my lower sport shield, I hate to think what might have happened. Would have hurt for sure.

http://stores.ebay.com/dakotashield
this is the seller’s ebay store.
I ordered a 9″ windshield today.
The one I have is 10″ and the top edge is in my line of sight.

I took the FLHT primary down today. The knocking sound came back on the return trip to Louisiana, I found the compensator nut was loose, like in hand tight loose.

I snugged it up and no more knock.
The threads on the nut are pretty well shot, the engine mainshaft threads are perfect, thank goodness. I ordered a new compensator nut $10. If that does it, I’ll be a happy biker. Watch for a tech later in the news.

Still can’t believe the compensator nut was about to fall off.

ON THE ROAD TO STURGIS?–Ghost Train…Last stop, The Depot Rest “haunt” and Lounge – Yakima, Washington

All aboard for this crazy ride to Sturgis, with a stop at a haunted train station in Yakima, Washington. Another great place to stop, with a shady and ghostly past. The Depot Restaurant and Lounge in Yakima was built in 1910 by the Northern Pacific Railway.

It was a stop originally a train depot, and a main stop in the growing city of Yakima. During the typhoid epidemics in the early 1900’s, the stations basement furnace was used to cremate bodies. If this isn’t spooky enough, the basement also includes an entrance to an underground network of tunnels running below Yakima. It was discontinued as a rail station in 1971, and converted into a restaurant. But did the trains and passengers stop coming? This former train depot might just still be in service, from the afterlife.

The stories and legends about the Depot are more than just one. Rumor has it, that there is a the ghost of a famous traveling hobo who used the nickname “A #1” to elude authorities for who knows what reasons. His name is supposedly carved into the marble of the bathroom wall. While he may have escaped authorities, he seems to never have escaped The Depot. The reports also contain tales of children playing, ghostly organ music, faucets turning on and off by themselves and a “lady in white” seen walking the staircase to the attic.

Whether you believe in ghosts or not, this station had an appeal to us that we just had to indulge. We’ll be stopping ride to Sturgis in this reportedly haunted station. While we enjoy a meal and some rest, we’ll keep our eyes peeled for the ghostly passengers that may still be riding the rails at The Depot. Stay tuned next time for another segment of LRS Myths, Legends, and Tales from the Road…

S&S SAID, “We’re Not Losing Our Minds.  Just Our Shirts!”–During the month of July only, anyone ordering an S&S Throttle Hog EFI throttle body for Harley-Davidson big twins with throttle by wire, will receive a free Throttle Hog t-shirt. This is an exclusive item that is not available to the general public. The only way to get one is to buy a Throttle Hog during the month of July. This high quality all cotton shirt is available in black only. The back features our really mean-looking Throttle Hog mascot, and an S&S logo on the front with the words “Got it 1st!” underneath. Think of it as a really stylish bacon wrap.

Just so nobody feels left out, the selling dealer and the customer each get a shirt! Two coupons will be shipped with the Throttle Hog; one for you and one for your dealer. Coupons must be redeemed on-line by August 31, 2012. You snooze – you lose!
Everybody loves free stuff, but the real reason to get a Throttle Hog throttle body is to get more grunt out of your hog. More air, more power.

Our dyno tests show that if you really want to make power with our 97” and 106” big bore kits and CNC heads, you need a bigger throttle body. We recommend the 58mm Throttle Hog for these engines, but we make even bigger 66mm and 70mm Throttle Hogs for larger engines. Throttle Hog throttle bodies are an exchange item, which means you must send a working stock throttle body to S&S in order to get a Throttle Hog. S&S will use the electronics from the stock throttle body to control the Throttle Hog.

Go to www.sscycle.com/bacon, or see your S&S dealer for more information about S&S Throttle Hog throttle bodies for 2008-’12 baggers with electronic throttle control (throttle by wire).

Remember! Order a Throttle Hog throttle body during the month of July and you and your S&S dealer both get a free Throttle Hog t-shirt!

UNCLE MONKEY ON THE BIKER LIFESTYLE–  It’s been over two years since I had opened the throttle up on my own motorcycle. My self-imposed exile is over now and while I still feel the pain in my back after riding it so far seems to be manageable.

Snow White purrs with delight as I head out onto the highways. Trips are short, usually under ten miles, zigzagging back and forth on the Trans-Canada highway as it passes to the North of my home town. She is a little temperamental and after having the nut on the front open primary back off twice I try to stay with a reasonable walking distance to home.

As the minor bugs disappear I settle into a more relax state with each ride, a few extra miles each way. The cumbersome extra padding of my road gear is replaced with jeans, runners and a beanie helmet. The pace is quick in the heavy traffic and I can finally let my guard down and enjoy the ride, the first ride of many. Its still there – the sun on the face, wind in my hair, the roar of drag pipes, the road beneath me and the traffic around.

People who never ridden don’t understand, can’t understand why we would shed the safe confines of a caged automobile to risk life and limb to ride motorcycles, a danger most often the result of someone complacency behind the wheel of their car or truck.

I wave to the bikes passing on the opposite side of the twin highway, a few wave back, maybe their shiny new leathers are still too stiff to wave, or maybe Harley doesn’t include that useful bit of information in their learn to ride course. I notice a lot of riders wearing the hyper fluorescent green safety vests. Perhaps they have had one too many close calls with the inattentive but with the large number of European immigrants that are calling Saskatchewan home it might be a cause of old habits.

Long haul truckers wave and blast their air horns as I power by. I smile and wave back knowing that somewhere at the end of their highway they have a bike waiting for them to get home. As I rumble down quiet city streets little has changed. The old people scowl, kids run excited along on the sidewalk, and all the pretty girls smile coyly hoping their boyfriends don’t notice their longing. Life is good on two wheels.

BIKERNET READER TECH OF THE WEEK–  A bit of internet searching and this is what I found about about my knocking primary:

“The compensator set up on the early TC88 engines was prone to failure. The compensator nut was known to loosen. The result would be a “knocking” sound in the primary. The “knock” was typically heard at idle and would disappear as the engine was revved.

The reason for the knock was a loose compensator nut. The secondary symptom of the early TC88 compensator set up was a engine backfire at start up. The engine would exhibit a “banging” sound as the engine was initially turned over. The long term effects of this could result in a damaged starter or broken teeth on the clutch shell starter gear.

The Harley-Davidson fix for the compensator nut is Screamin’ Eagle kit P/N 40274-08-A which retails for $250. The SE compensator set up was completely different from the early factory TC88 compensator set up.

The SE part is a direct install. However it does require that the inner primary case be cleared to allow for the installation of the included upgrade rotor. The Screamin’ Eagle parts were used on the 2006 Dyna models and then incorporated in the entire H-D Twin Cam model line up: Dyna, Softail and Touring. The SE compensator set up is factory recommended for all TC 88 Big Twins thru 2005 on an “as needed” basis.

It not a factory recall item. However the factory does recognize the compensator problem on the early TC 88 models.

See attachments for the two different TC88 compensator assemblies.

Also see attached procedure for early style compensator installation.
The required torque setting is 150-165 ft-lbs.
The factory procedure allows for a lower torque setting with an additional tightening of the “nut.”

Note: upgrade kit 40274-08 is for later model TC engines 2007 and up

Note #2: tech tip for adding shim to engine compensating nut. Shim is an original Shovelhead part, interestingly enough. I rest my case

–Anson

And now for a correction: Apparently the SE kit is only for 2006 and up TC engines and was initially recommended for big inch engines, now it is the standard part for all late model engines.

The 1999-2005 TC’s stay with the original style compensator nut. The compensator nut should be checked for tightness should problems arise.

In keeping with this, there is a H-D service bulletin TT122 (which I can not find printed in PDF), it states that a .090″ thick shim (Harley PN 24033-70) should be placed under the compensating nut head to prevent the nut from bottoming out when tightened. The tightening procedure above should be followed.

I think I have had a enough of this “nuttiness.”

This rule, and its corollary—admit nothing into the ambit of the characters’ consciousness which would not reasonably have been there—accounts for both the authenticity of Ulysses and much of its ability to stymie its readers.
–James Joyce, Jeri Johnson, “Introduction,” Ulysses

No, I won’t stymie you, but I could, real fast, you know that.
–Catherine Coulter, KnockOut

Stymie is of unknown origin. It came into common usage in the 1830s, before the rise of golf as a popular game.

BIKERNET MEDICAL CENTER FINDINGS–5 Foods to Reduce the Risk of Stroke.

Want to help reduce your odds of having a stroke? Besides minimizing common risk factors such as smoking and unhealthy stress, consider adding magnesium-rich foods to your grocery cart.

Researchers at the Swedish Karolinska Institute found that the risk for ischemic stroke – the most common type of stroke in older people, which is when a clot blocks a blood vessel in the brain – was reduced by 9% for each additional 100 milligrams of magnesium a person consumed each day. For any type of stroke, adding 100 milligrams of magnesium reduced the risk by 8%.

It is not known exactly how magnesium reduces the risk of stroke, but the researchers suggest that the mineral’s benefits may be related to its ability to lower blood pressure. Next time you are at the grocery or farmer’s market, buy these magnesium-rich foods:

•Green leafy vegetables such as spinach, kale and collard greens, as well as broccoli

•Nuts and seeds. Pumpkin seeds are an excellent source of magnesium, and peanuts, almonds and cashews are good nut choices

•Whole grain products such as brown rice, oat bran cereal and whole grain breads

•Beans. Black beans are a particularly good source, providing 120 mg in one cup

•Fish. Halibut, oysters and scallops are all good sources of magnesium. Choose sustainably raised when possible

SUPPORT FOR MOTORCYCLE RIDERS FOUNDATION–  I got a surprise visit from Karen Bolin’s sister Jane Chaney and her husband who were in town this week enjoying the 4th of July holiday. I hope everyone has a wonderful and safe 4th of July.

PROTEST OF THE WEEK–  The people who own this great BBQ joint in Marietta, Georgia, are good friends of ours.

Check out the WSB-TV news coverage video of what happened when the city cited the
Williamson Brothers for flying a POW/MIA and support the troops flags.

Many thanks to the people of Marietta for their outrage and support. I would have
included the city’s email contact but I think enough people have chewed on their collective asses that there is probably little to be had at this point.

BAD COP FILES–Miramar cop charged with lewd conduct.
By Monique O. Madan The Miami Herald

A teen-age girl tells police a man wearing a badge ordered her to undress so he could make sure she hadn’t had sex. One by one, the 15-year-old girl went through headshots of suspects.

Among them, she knew, was the man dressed as a police officer who she said ordered her to take off her pants and unbutton her blouse, and then spread her legs as he used a flashlight to inspect her.

The man she identified: Miramar police Capt. Juan De Los Rios, 46.

On Friday, De Los Rios was charged with two counts of lewd or lascivious conduct on an underage girl, according to the arrest affidavit. He was booked into Broward County Jail and held on $30,000 bail.

If convicted, De Los Rios could face up to 15 years in prison and up to a $10,000 fine.
According to the arrest affidavit, the girl was sitting in the back of a car with a 19-year-old friend parked in the back lot of a business plaza in Miramar after school on Jan. 18, when a man approached the car and looked at them through the window.

He asked them to roll down the window.
Because he was in a dark-blue uniform and wearing a gold badge, the teens thought he was a police officer and complied.

The man then began to question them. At one point, he leaned against the window, looked at them, gave a hard long pause and asked: “Well, were you having sex? What are you doing here?”
The girl quickly responded “no, no, no, officer no,” the affidavit said. The girl told police she and her friend were just talking.

But the man told the girl he “needed to check.”
The girl asked “Check what?”

“I need to see inside,” he responded.

That’s when he ordered her to take off her pants and underwear so he could look for bruising or other evidence of sexual activity.

In fear, the affidavit said, she complied.
The girl told police she thought it “was the right thing to do” because he was an officer.

Her 19-year-friend turned away, unable to watch, according to the affidavit.

He told police he heard the man tell the girl “I need you to spread your legs wider so I can see.”

The officer then used a flashlight to “inspect” her and told her to pull down her blouse so he could check for bruising, according to the police report.
Then he returned the driver’s license to the boy and told them “Go home.”

The teens got into the front seats of the car, “cried, hugged and drove off,” the affidavit said.

The youngsters didn’t tell anybody at first because they were afraid and intimidated. But then the girl told her older sister, who insisted their mother be told.

When questioned by police, the girl said the man who’d ordered her to remove her clothing had a gold badge and his last name began with the letter “R.’’ She also said she knew she could identify the man if she saw him again.

Officials did not release the identities of the teens.
As far as evidence, investigators had the girl turn in the clothes she was wearing that day — one pair of blue jean pants, a Ralph Lauren sport sized T-shirt, a beige bra, and one pair of pink and black underwear briefs. They also asked the CVS Caremark near where the teens had parked for its surveillance video.

Although the quality of the video was not enough to identify De Los Rios, police say the body language was consistent with the victim’s and witness’ statements.

De Los Rios’ gold badge was also paper bagged.
The 18-year veteran of the department has been on administrative leave since the complaint was filed in January. Miramar police launched a criminal investigation along with the Broward State Attorney’s Office.

A warrant for De Los Rios’ arrest was issued Friday. He later turned himself in to police.
“He is now suspended without pay, pending the outcome of the investigation,” said Miramar police spokeswoman Tania Rues.

LIFE IS NUTS—But what the hell, it is what it is, and Bikernet is here for you, when you need to escape, relax, or worship the chrome messiah.

Over this weekend and next week, we will bring you Smoke Out reports, Born Free story from Gary Mraz, Le Pera tech, review of the Victory Judge, Marlboro man bike research, Arizona HOG rally coverage from Josh, and Wind Vest Champion trike tech from the Triking Viking. We have motorcycle fiction from Gary Mraz, and Uncle Monkey, and a new series, Unity 7, is in the wings.

I hope to also wrap up another report on the Bonne Belle as the roller comes together with fresh paint, and we pray the engine will arrive in time. We are looking for a handful of sponsorship funds to help deliver us to the salt.

I will also begin writing another report on the Bikernet/Cycle Source giveaway Sweeps custom build by Gary and Ron in Detroit. This is going to be one sharp scooter, and you’ll see sheet metal progress next week.

Have a helluva weekend. I’m going to take the Mudflap girl out for a ride, although I still can’t figure out the speedo. It won’t work, no matter what I do.

Ride forever,

–Bandit
