MEGA JACKPOT THURSDAY NEWS FOR MAY 24, 2012

Hey,

I had a slight glitch in my e-mail program and lost a handful of notorious e-mails. If you haven’t heard from me, instead of kicking the cat, drop me another line. I’ll make sure to get back to you.

Here’s another major Bikernet announcement. Toph has gone on to marketing an apparel line, and we wish him the best. Just the other day Buck Lovell, sequestered in the Black Hills, became the BikernetBaggers editor, and Gary Mraz is the esteemed Editor in Chief of BikernetTrikes. In fact the Bikernet board of directors called for a special editorial title conference in Sun Valley, Idaho.

We will endeavor to decide whether to nominate these prolific journalist to the height of Editor in Chief, Editor, Emperor Editor. Editorial Emperor, Supreme Editor, or Staff Jackass. We are open to input from Bikernet readers, or extreme Bikernet Readers, or radical Bikernet readers, or Tea Party Bikernet readers. Good god. I give up.

Let’s hit the news:

FROM THE BIKERNET BLONDE FILES–A Blonde, a Holden and a Mattress – true story !!!!

A Blonde ran over an innerspring mattress on the highway, and decided not to worry — and kept on driving. It caught on the undercarriage etc of her Holden.  The ensuing jumble finally whipped around enough to tear a hole in the fuel tank.

The subsequent lack of fuel is what finally brought her vehicle to its knees.

She had managed to drive 50 kms, with a 25kg tangle of “stuff” wrapped around her drive shaft.

She had it towed to her Holden dealership, and complained that the vehicle had a ‘sort of a noise’ when she was driving at high speeds.

BADAZZ BEDROLL–The design of the original BADAZZ Motorcycle Bedroll came from the many travels of the open road on motorcycle. Whenever I would reach my destination or just a stop on the open road, I had no place to sit or lay down. A chair strapped on by a bungy cord was not an option. The BADAZZ
Motorcycle Bedroll was designed to handle many riders needs.

The bedroll is your quick nap pad, lawn chair, picnic …table, extra blanket for those cold nights. This design also allows you to cover your bike on those hot summer days without touching the pipes. Foggy mornings are not a problem if your bike was cover with a waterproof bedroll. Just shake off the morning dew, roll up, head out. Check out our BADAZZ Apparel for Shirts, hats and more. Get your BADAZZ Product today….we’ve got you covered!!

http://www.bad-azz.biz/

Outside is waterproof. Inside is lined with a separate zip our fleece. It straps on to the front or the back of your bike. We use it when we just need a quick rest on long rides.

BIKERNET UNIVERSITY ENGLISH DEPARTMENT VOCABULARY LESSON–phatic FAT-ik, adjective:

Denoting speech used to create an atmosphere of goodwill.

We conduct phatic discourse indispensable to maintaining a constant connection among speakers; but phatic speech is indispensable precisely because it keeps the possibility of communication in working order, for the purpose of other and more substantial communications.
Umberto Eco, Travels in Hyperreality

They’re just filling the air with noise. This is what’s called phatic speech. “How are you?” they might ask.
Adriana Lopez, Fifteen Candles

Coined by the anthropologist Bronislaw Malinowski, phatic was first used in 1923. It probably comes from the Greek word phatos meaning “spoken.”

WILBUR SMITH NOVELS—I was recently introduced to the works of Wilbur Smith. I’m reading Eye of the Tiger. He’s the most popular author in Australia, New Zealand, and Europe. You want action, Wilbur Smith is your guy.

Wilbur Addison Smith (born 9 January 1933 in Broken Hill, Northern Rhodesia, now Kabwe, Zambia) is a best-selling novelist. His writings include 16th and 17th century tales about the founding of the southern territories of Africa and the subsequent adventures and international intrigues relevant to these settlements. His books often fall into one of three series.

These works of fiction draw on history and help to explain the rise and historical influence of the Dutch and English whites in southern Africa that eventually claimed this diamond and gold rich and disputed territory as home.

AUSSIE STATE OF VICTORIA, NO BIKER SWITZERLAND– The head of the Victoria Police Crime Department has slammed suggestions that the state has become “bikie Switzerland”, amid claims groups are seeking to move from states where governments are introducing anti-association laws aimed at breaking up outlaw motorcycle clubs.

Acting Assistant Commissioner Doug Fryer told The Australian’s Adam Shand that Victoria Police’s Taskforce Echo had not seen any significant increase in the state’s bikie numbers in recent years.

There had been only moderate growth of club membership in Victoria and no influx of new clubs setting up in the state to escape new laws in NSW, South Australia and Western Australia, contrary to recent media reports.

Mr. Fryer would not comment on the need for new laws in Victoria, but said Taskforce Echo had “a handle on the club problem” under the existing legislation.

Victorian Premier Ted Baillieu has flagged new anti-biker legislation but has backed away from earlier promises to introduce anti-association legislation.

…Mr. Fryer said sections of the media had incorrectly connected Victoria’s groups with reports of open warfare between clubs following a spate of biker-related incidents in other states.

He highlighted the reporting of an alleged shooting of a member of the Bandidos in a Surfers Paradise shopping centre last month. Initial reports had indicated the alleged shooter had been a Victoria-based hitman sent to Queensland to assassinate the Bandido, a tattoo parlor owner named Jacques Teamo.

It later emerged the alleged shooter, Mark James Graham, was a members of the Finks motorcycle club and the shooting had been a spontaneous event when the pair had bumped into each other in the shopping centre.

Victorian bikers had deliberately limited the recruitment of members of ethnic groups linked to violent street crime in NSW, including a spate of drive-by shootings, Mr. Fryer said. “Clubs in Victoria have a desire to stay out of the headlines, unlike groups in other states.”

He labeled as unhelpful reports suggesting all club members were involved in serious and organized crime: “There are pockets within the many clubs . . . involved in serious and organized crime but to suggest that church nights (weekly club meetings) are all about the members sitting around to organize crime is not correct.”

He said organized crime in the clubs was non-hierarchical, with members often unaware of each other’s criminal activities.

MAN DIES IN THE MIDDLE OF A LAP DANCE–They say you should go out doing what you love. A 67-year-old Texas man may have taken that inspirational advice to heart Friday night when he died at a strip club while getting erotic lap dances.

According to a manager at the Red Parrot, Robert Gene White was face-deep in pelvic gyrations when it came time to pay the girls and he was found unresponsive. Staff attempted CPR before calling emergency responders, who took the man to the hospital. We can only guess White’s final earthly sights, but we’re pretty sure he passed on to the other side with pleasant visions in tow.

PROM-GOERS PICKED THE WRONG VENUE–Prom-goers surprised to find X-rated event in same building”Exotica” sounds benign enough to be a prom theme, but it was a public relations nightmare for administrators at Miami Beach Senior High School when they discovered that their big spring formal had been booked into the same convention center as “Exxxotica.”

It’s what organizer John Handy calls “the largest adult event in the country dedicated to love and sex,” and what at least one parent called “terrible.” The school avoids staging its prom at hotels to discourage drinking, but had to hire police officers to help keep the kids secure from the, uh, Exxxotics. “Police Presence” – now there’s a modern-day prom theme for you.

UNCLE MONKEY ON THE VERGE OF PROJECT COMPLETION–That tingling anticipation of the finishing a project. My bike build has stretched years longer than expected, sometimes sitting idle for a year, while I save up for parts, made plans or was riding one of my other bikes. I am now facing the final run down, the final assembly of my hard work.

It hasn’t always been easy but it has been rewarding. It is a slow process, as I make sure everything is just right, everything is LocTite protected. I am in a holding pattern waiting for the last few parts to arrive. I wonder around like a lost puppy, unable to proceed, unable to ride. I pass my time finishing up other projects, cleaning the garage of the many, many accumulated cardboard boxes. But it’s hanging right there within reach, the end of the build. Will it be tonight, this weekend, next weekend, did I forget anything? A whirlwind of excitement engulfed me, as I look forward to the motor firing for the first time, to those first few miles out of the garage like a newborn fawn as the bike finds its legs.

I’m really happy with the way the bike turned out, exceeding my wildest dreams. My mind races to the runs I will ride on, the days to be spent out on the highway, back in the wind. I’m a bundle of nerves, anticipating the reveal of my creation. For now, I burn daylight reading over the initial start-up sequence, memorizing the suggested break in procedures, calculating how long it will take, where it will take me, where I will be when I can finally un-harness the 120 horses constrained within the V-twin. In the meantime I wait semi-sorta patiently.

REPORT ON Bikers Inside the Beltway 2012–Thursday, May 17th, 2012 was the 4th annual Michael “Boz” Kerr Bikers Inside the Beltway event in Washington, DC. The event is a national lobby day, sponsored by the Motorcycle Riders Foundation, for motorcyclists to come to Capitol Hill to meet with their elected officials and brief them on all issues affecting motorcyclists at the federal level.

This year’s event drew hundreds of motorcyclists from 17 States and they met with almost 250 elected officials.

One of the top issues the attendees were lobbying for was asking their members of Congress to work the HR 904 language into the now conferenced highway legislations. HR 904 is the bill to prohibit federal funding of motorcycle-only roadside checkpoints.

During the Congressional Panel portion of the day, the group of riders gathered in a Ways and Means Committee room to hear from a select group of Members of Congress. Addressing the group was Congressmen Burgess, the Motorcycle Safety Caucus co-chair, along with his colleagues in the House of Representatives: Alan West-FL, Scott Rigell-VA, Jon Runyan-NJ, Bob Dold-IL, Todd Young-IN, Richard Hanna-NY, Erik Paulsen-MN, and Adam Kinsinger-IL. The MRF thanks all of the Members of Congress who attended the event.

Coinciding with Bikers Inside the Beltway week, Congressman Jim Sensenbrenner ran an op-ed in the daily paper, “Roll Call” urging conferees on the highway bill to include language from HR 904.

Sensenbrenner said “May is Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month and we welcome motorcyclists from across the country to Washington for ‘Bikers Inside the Beltway’ week. During this week, Congress should be reminded that effective motorcycle safety can help keep all of us safer on the road, but efforts to expand a government program that arbitrarily roadblocks law-abiding motorcyclists are a misguided, ineffective use of taxpayer funds.”

This year’s event received media attention in both the print and online editions of “Politico”, a Washington, DC daily paper and website.

Thanks to all who attended and to those who helped support those who attended. This year was a tremendous success.

THE TALIBAN TIE–A fleeing Taliban, desperate for water, was plodding through the Afghan desert when he saw something far off in the distance.
Hoping to find water, he hurried toward the oasis, only to find a little old Jewish man at a small stand, selling ties.

The Taliban asked, “Do you have water?”

The Jewish man replied, “I have no water. Would you like to buy a tie? They are only $5.”

The Taliban shouted, “Idiot! I do not need an over-priced tie.I need water! I should kill you, but I must find water first!”

“OK,” said the old Jewish man, “It does not matter that you do not want to buy a tie and that you hate me. I will show you that I am bigger than that.If you continue over that hill to the east for about two miles, you will find a lovely restaurant. It has all the ice cold water you need. Shalom.”

Cursing, the Taliban staggered away over the hill.

Several hours later he staggered back, almost dead & said,
“Your brother won’t let me in without a tie!”

BIKERNET TECH QUESTION OF THE WEEK–  I have a S&S 93-inch ShovelHead, and I can only use a open end wrench to tighten the cylinders down, how do you suppose to torque these nuts down to 35 to 40 foot pounds, how do you torque yours down. By the way thanks for the articles about this build.

–Michael

We gave him our best advice and reached out to Bruce at S&S: You can use an open end torque adaptor (crows foot) on your torque wrench with no modifications. Since we do a lot of these, we use a modified 12 pt torque adaptor. Our engine assembly guys had to do a little grinding to thin the walls a little bit, but it was not enough that they are breaking the adaptors at that torque level. Be sure to allow for the extra length of the adaptor because it does increase the torque applied. Here’s a link to a website that will calculate it for you.

Let me know if you have any questions.

The Complete Guide to Motorcycling Colorado
Whitehorse Press hits another one out of the ballpark with The Complete Guide to Motorcycling Colorado. Subtitled The Definitive Reference for ALL the Best Roads, Rides, and Tips author Steve Farson brings the roads and scenery of Colorado to life in 448 pages. Filled with maps and more than 300 illustrations in a 6” x 9” paperback you can take this book along on your Colorado adventure. Steve breaks the state into seven sections that are color coded to make them easy to find in the book. There is a regional overview for each section, followed by a list of numbered, named recommended rides with a small map for each ride. The end of each section covers recommended rides and ends with a list of favorite rides broken down further into more specific interests.

The only drawback is the maps are small. A smart rider could load these routes into a GPS and ride to their hearts content.

BIKERNET TELEVISION SERIES EXCLUSIVE—I don’t watch commercial television, so we were surprised to learn a motorcycle tidbit from one of the most popular series finale:  ‘House’ series finale: Hugh Laurie says don’t expect a last-minute change– By Jay Bobbin

How does one of the edgiest, most antagonistic characters in series television history say goodbye?

Pretty much in the same fashion he said hello.

Anything else would ring false for Dr. Gregory House, and title star Hugh Laurie and series creator and executive producer David Shore are determined to see him end true to form as the FOX medical drama “House” wraps up its eight-year run Monday, May 21. Don’t expect major reassessments or revelations by the central figure, then, just a final and familiar round of sass and snark. And, very probably, one last swath of professional brilliance.

“It would almost be one of House’s many mantras that people don’t change, generally speaking,” Laurie tells Zap2it as a two-time winner of Golden Globe, Screen Actors Guild and Television Critics Association Awards who also became a producer as the series proceeded.

“It’s certainly true in television drama. They can’t change, actually. If they do, you wind up with a different show from the one you started with, and that gets economically and logistically difficult.

“I’ve always felt that one of the distinctions between film and television is that in film, by and large, the main characters change, and the world doesn’t,” Laurie adds. “In television, the main characters stay the same, and the world changes, and I think it’s important that House remains uncompromised. There is a defiance about him that’s a kind of strength, and even though it might be belligerent at times, I find it inspiring. He will not suddenly give into the sentimental, even at the end of the show. I find that uplifting, in a twisted and dark way.”

So does Shore, who admits “my mind’s refusing to wrap itself around the idea” that the series is ending, though the February decision and announcement gave him the time to write a final “House” script the way he wanted to.

“I really have lived with this character. It’s a very strange thing. It has affected me in ways that I won’t really know until I’m completely done with it, and I think Hugh is likely having a similar experience.”

The way an actor plays a part can add that extra something that makes it classic, and clearly, Laurie as House is such a case. “That was a beautiful moment for me,” Shore recalls of his creation first being brought to life so indelibly. “We had met with a lot of people, and nobody got it, at least not the way I did. And I was starting to get scared that maybe I’d written someone who doesn’t, or can’t, actually exist.

“Then Hugh came in and read, and it was so radically different from everybody else, and the interpretation was exactly what I’d hoped for. I’m not even sure I’d seen it in my head quite that way. When he read it, all you could do was go, ‘Yeah. That’s it.’ I’d loved his comedy, so I had very much a preconceived notion of him, and I was very surprised.”

In the home stretch, Laurie gave himself an extra challenge by also directing the fourth-to-last “House” episode. Over the show’s eight years, he’s seen various co-stars come and go: Jennifer Morrison (now on ABC’s “Once Upon a Time”), Lisa Edelstein, Olivia Wilde (who returned in the next-to-last story), Kal Penn, Peter Jacobson, Amber Tamblyn (an extended guest in season seven), Odette Annable and Charlyne Yi.

Knowing it takes more than one character to make a series – particularly one built around somebody so relatively unsympathetic – Laurie credits his acting colleagues as major elements of the longevity and success “House” has had.

“The last five episodes featured a lot of extremely powerful stuff for Robert Sean Leonard (alias Dr. James Wilson), to which he rose magnificently. One of the great things about being in a scene with someone is that you get the best seat in the house, and I got to see him doing his thing … and I came away thinking I didn’t know of a film or another television show where I’ve watched an actor that good do something that well. And I can say the same about the other regulars who have been in the show. It’s been amazing to work with them.”

The finale, in which a drug-addicted patient (guest star James LeGros) triggers memories for House, will be preceded by an hourlong retrospective. Laurie says he’ll be “immersing myself, possibly to the point of drowning” in a worldwide music tour in the immediate aftermath of “House,” starting literally the next day in San Diego.

While he wouldn’t rule out a return to American series work some day, Laurie realizes any other project will have a mighty task to match what he’s spent the better part of the past decade on.

This is Television lingo, but if you watched the last episode the stars ride off into the sunset on Harleys. That’s all that counts, right. –Bandit

BIKERNET MEDICAL CENTER–Weight Loss, Get Moving!
A healthful diet is not the only factor when it comes to achieving a healthy weight – physical activity plays an important role as well. While it may seem challenging to find time to work out, the long- and short-term health benefits make it a necessary aspect of achieving optimum health and a healthy weight. These five, simple tips can help get you moving and your calories burning!

Change your daily habits. We’ve all heard the advice to park farther away or take the stairs, because it works. Set a goal to take the stairs at work every other day, then every day.

Join a gym. Make an appointment with a trainer on staff – she or he can help design a plan for your level of fitness, health concerns or time constraints. Then go! (If you think a gym membership is beyond your budget, many healthcare plans now offer reimbursements if you visit the gym a certain number of times per month. Contact your healthcare provider for more information.)

Take care of yourself. Wear the proper footwear, removable layers or light clothing, start slow and work your way up, and avoid dehydration by drinking more water than you think you need.

Get excited to work out. Join an exercise class, rent new exercise videos, hire a personal trainer, or enlist a friend for morning walks. It’s more fun if you don’t go it alone. And mix up your exercise routine to work different sets of muscles and keep boredom at bay.

Try yoga. It is an effective and enjoyable way to burn calories, increase muscle mass (which in turn burns more calories) and enhance stretching, which is important for keeping joints limber and preventing injury.

Start dancing! Fast-tempo dancing is not only fun (especially when you get some friends to join you) but can burn 400 to 500 calories per hour.

WELCOME FRANKENSTEIN TRIKE KITS TO BIKERNET TRIKES—Frankenstein Products just came on board, and there trike kits lead to some amazing custom trikes. This is just one example by MCWORX.

Frank Pedersen owner of MCWORX has been building custom bikes and frames since 1995. In 2005 he saw the writing on the wall and decided to design and manufacture a Trike rear end and Trike Conversion Kits for stock Harley-Davidson Motorcycles under the name Frankenstein Trikes.

These days, Trike Conversion Kits are Frank’s main focus but he can’t seem to get choppers and hot rods out of his head, so he set out to design a Hot Rod Chopper Trike. The platform for this project started with a MCWORX hard tail, drop seat trike frame. The frame was stretched 3 inches up and the rake was set at 40°. The frame was specifically designed to incorporate the mounts for the Frankenstein 30” Standard Hot Rod Rear End.

The fact that Frank can’t get Hot Rods out of his blood is evident in his tire choice. Protrac M50-15 tires wrap the 15×10 Halibrand style polished wheels. These are the same tires that Frank used back in the late 70’s on his big block ‘64 Chevelle. Because these tires are taller than the typical trike tires, the hard tail section had to be kicked up a couple of inches to keep the seat low and maintain the stance. The frame and all components were powder coated graphite. The pin striping was applied by Scott Thomas. The front wheel is a 19”, 60 spoke.

IRISH COMPASSION–A man was sitting on a blanket at the beach. He had no arms and no legs.  Three women, from England , Scotland and Ireland , were walking past and felt sorry for the poor man.

The English woman said ‘Have you ever had a hug? The man said ‘No’ so she gave him a hug and walked on.

The Scottish woman said, ‘Have you ever had a kiss? The man said,’No,’ so she gave him a kiss and walked on.

The Irish woman came to him and said, ‘Have ya ever been fooked lad? The man broke into a big smile and said, No. She said, ‘Aye – Ya will be when the tide comes in.

BIKERNET BAGGERS TEASER–Midnight Rider: Route 666 – The Devils Highway EPISODE 9– Crossing the border into Arizona, I reflect. It was only recently Route 666 was re-designated US 191. Apparently, there are those so superstitious they refused to use the highway. I guess even roads need new identities; new futures because their past is too dark to bear.

SAFETY ASSOCIATION REPORTS MOTORCYCLIST FATALITIES DID NOT INCREASE IN 2011– PICKERINGTON, Ohio — Motorcyclist fatalities for 2011 will be about the same as 2010, according to a preliminary report released on May 21 by the Governors Highway Safety Association, the American Motorcyclist Association reports.

Based on preliminary data, the GHSA reports that fatalities decreased by 1.67 percent during the first nine months of 2011. However, the association projects the final tally will be very close to the 4,502 fatalities reported for 2010. That figure is a slight increase over the number of fatalities reported for 2009 (4,469), which represented a dramatic 16 percent decline from 2008.

“Any motorcycle fatality is one too many, but we are encouraged that the report’s preliminary finding suggests that overall motorcycle fatalities in 2011 will not be greater than 2010,” said AMA President and CEO Rob Dingman.

“Interpreting crash, injury and fatality data is challenging because states have historically struggled with calculating actual motorcycle usage,” said Dingman, himself a former governor’s highway safety program administer for New York. “Measuring fatalities against motorcycle registrations is not effective because it does not take into account how many miles riders are putting on their motorcycles at any given time.”

Dingman added that the economy, gasoline prices and weather are also variables that are difficult to quantify when determining motorcycle usage. The lack of sufficient data underscores the critical need for a new comprehensive crash causation study, such as the one currently under way at Oklahoma State University. The study is being conducted at the Oklahoma Transportation Center under a $2.8 million Federal Highway Administration grant approved by Congress, along with more than $125,000 committed by the AMA and funds from six state safety programs — New Mexico, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, Texas, Wisconsin — for another $750,000.

The last comprehensive crash causation study was published in 1981 by Professor Hugh “Harry” Hurt Jr. Hurt’s groundbreaking work provided a wealth of data that has been used to develop training and strategies to help keep riders safer on the road, and earned Hurt a posthumous induction into the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame. Dingman took issue with one of the GHSA report recommendations.

“We do not agree that mandatory helmet laws are a solution,” said Dingman. “The AMA strongly encourages helmet use, but helmets do nothing to prevent motorcycle crashes. Our experience with helmet mandates shows us that when they are enforced, scarce resource dollars are directed away from rider training and motorist awareness, effective programs that reduce the risk of a crash occurring in the first place.” Rider training and motorist awareness programs are strongly supported by the motorcycling community, and are also recommended in the GHSA report.

BONNE BELLE CARB INVESTIGATION–I spoke to Lee Chapin, then John O’Keefe from Branch this morning. Here’s the deal. John said we should shoot for 9:1 compression, then we could run a 42mm Mikuni. He doesn’t suggest a plenum chamber, but he agrees about an air box. He told me about the success he’s having with Triumphs. He installs a velocity stack on the carb with an air cleaner over it. He told me how surprised he was with the positive results with a K&N air cleaner element.

John, had some other comments about the ports and eyebrowing around the valves for additional flow.

DON’T MISS THE LATEST FRANKENSTEIN TRIKE FEATURE ON BIKERNET TRIKES–  It’s September, 1977, a beautiful Indian summer day. After an anxious wait I have just picked up the Trike from the painter. I immediately drive to Lisa’s house and with an aggressive wick of the throttle the short pipes scream and I get her attention. We head to Jensen’s pond and pull right to the water’s edge. Lisa immediately jumps off the Trike, sheds her jean shorts and tube top. She turns around and smiles, the shimmer of the pond blinds me as she runs towards the water.

NEW SHOW COMING, American International Motorcycle Expo–  In the latest blog posted by the American International Motorcycle Expo, Larry Little, Vice President and General Manager of the Motorcycle Group for Marketplace Events, talks about the busy schedule he’s faced since making the announcement of choosing Orlando, Fla. to provide host to the inaugural AIMExpo. In addition to his hectic schedule, Little takes readers with him as he reflects on an adventure ride he took with close friends, emphasizing the importance of setting aside time to enjoy motorcycling.

We will keep you posted as this show is developed.

TRIKES GO MAINSTREAM with new dealer channel, growing customer base TRIKES HAVE LONG BEEN the Rodney Dangerfield of powersports. Three-wheelers transitioned from mainly serving commercial purposes to being the purview of retirees, aging cyclists and the odd sorts attracted to their niche appeal.

But two major changes took place that radically altered the three-wheeled landscape. In 2007 Can-Am launched the Spyder, its own take on what a tri-wheeled vehicle should be. And then, in 2008, Harley-Davidson radically changed the landscape by launching its own production trike, the Tri-Glide. It was this move by the Motor Co. that, many say, legitimized trikes, taking them out of a niche and into the mainstream.

In making the decision, H-D severed ties with Lehman Trikes, the Spearfish, S.D.-based manufacturer that had been making Harley three-wheelers since 2006. The company suspended operations this year not long after the death of founder John Lehman, when a proposed sale of the company failed to attract investors.

At the other end is Motor Trike out of Troup, Texas, a company that manufactures conversion kits for both American-made motorcycles and metrics. For Motor Trike, the market shift has led three years of continuing growth. “We are no longer a stepchild. When we first started in this business, we’d have to get fitted with Kevlar before we did a rally. The comment always was, ‘I’ll be dead or I’ll give up riding before you get me on a trike,'” says Jeff Vey, Motor Trike’s owner. “If you’d have had thin skin in the early days, you’d have bled to death.”

The introduction of the Tri-Glide buoyed the industry, Vey says: “It was like a blessing from the pope.” Reflecting a trend reported by many aftermarket conversion kit companies contacted by Dealernews, Vey says Motor Trike sales increased 13 percent in 2010 and another 13 percent in 2011, and thus far in 2012 is up 7.5 percent.

CHANGING DEMOGRAPHIC

The trike market is still dominated by the aging rider demographic, a group of longtime or returning riders who put heavy miles on their machines. In fact, Vey says 93 percent of Motor Trike’s products belong in the touring segment.

Some manufacturers, though, report anecdotal increases in the number of women riders and younger buyers. Vey says his customer age range varies depending on the product in question; for example, Motor Trike’s Victory Motorcycle conversion kits with touring trunks attract buyers in the 40- to 45-year-old range.

At Black Hills Harley-Davidson in Rapid City, S.D., owner Terry Rymer says the store does brisk business with Tri-Glide sales — and about 15 percent of buyers are women. They’ve even done some modified trikes for handicapped riders, he says. “These are the people who have always ridden, and it gets them back into the wind,” Rymer says.

The one constant among all trike owners is that they all can afford the $30,000-plus price tag of the Tri-Glide and the add-on sales of accessories and performance modifications. “If you can afford to buy one of these, you can afford to make it your own,” Rymer notes.
Trikes have yet to reach a nationwide audience; yes, the Spyder has captured an international following, but trikes in the U.S. are still largely a regional thing.

Jim Pinto, vice president of Garden Grove, Calif.,-based Champion Trikes, says that about 75 percent of its business is still east of the Rockies. The trike conversion and sidecar manufacturer is starting to see sales pick up on the West Coast, but it’s still largely an untapped market, he says. “The trike business is still in its infancy. Most people think the trike business is fad, but it’s not a fad,” Pinto says. There are 1.5 million baby boomers with licenses who want to keep their dreams alive, women tired of riding behind their husbands, new riders who are uncomfortable on two wheels, and those with disabilities who want to stay on the road. Riders in that last segment, Pinto notes, can write off their trikes on Schedule A of their federal income taxes.

The company sells kits for new bikes and has 54 different models for American-made and metric motorcycles. As the market matures, Champion sees it trending toward a good, better, best approach to sales; Pinto says the company offers products starting with Sportsters and ratcheting upward to models for the Harley FLH and Honda Gold Wing.

“We don’t feel the industry has been tapped out,” Pinto says. “What we see is, as the population grows older, there are more and more trike kits being sold, and there is a also a group of youthful people buying them.”

NEW DEALER OPPORTUNITIES

Champion’s dealer network is an eclectic mix of installers — those who convert bikes for customers, Harley-Davidson and metric dealers, and the small independent shops who ship the bikes to Champion’s factory to be converted. “We’re also the vendor of choice for most of the rental companies,” Pinto adds.

For some of the longtime players, this expansion bodes well for sales of conversion kits given there are hundreds of thousands of motorcycles out on the road that can receive the three-wheel treatment.

With a nationwide dealer network of about 100 dealers, Roadsmith Trikes saw its fortunes drop off during the recession, but then pick up in 2011 and continue to grow heading into 2012. The White Bear Lake, Minn.,-based company was founded in 1972 as The Trike Shop, doing Volkswagen-powered trikes.

Roadsmith’s general manager, Doug Lindholm, says that the company’s audience somewhat reflects the demographic broadening seen across the trike segment, but still trends toward those of retirement age who’ve spent a lifetime on two wheels.

The one thing he sees as a common thread across all trike customers is that all of them have a solid “reason” for buying a three-wheeler. Often this reason is getting a bike back on the road that’s been garaged for some time.

Lindholm is thankful for the newfound acceptance brought on by Harley-Davidson’s official entry into the market. It means better business for his company, which can now target new dealer opportunities and new customers.

“The dealers were like, ‘Oh, no. We don’t sell trikes,'” he says. “Now, they’re like, ‘We can only carry so many Tri-Glides. Maybe there’s another trike we can carry.'”

FORD MODEL A AND VINTAGE TRAILER HAUL FISHING GEAR AND NOSTALGIA TO AUCTIONS AMERICA BY RM’s 2012 AUBURN FALL AUCTION–  AUBURN, Indiana (May 24, 2012) – America’s love of the open road will be a theme at this year’s Auctions America by RM Aug. 30 – Sept. 2 Auburn Fall auction as exhibited by a restored Model A and camper combo that looks like a time capsule from the 1930s. Nearly 1,500 American muscle cars, Classics, foreign sports cars and hot rods will cross the block at the historic Auburn Auction Park, the company’s national headquarters in Auburn, Indiana.

Towing a camper full of fishing gear across the country is nothing new; marine products representative J.M. Keely saw much of the southeastern United States from just such a rig in the middle of the Great Depression. Keely modified his new 1931 Ford Model A Deluxe and custom-built trailer (est. $150,000 – $225,000) for heavy-duty road use, and it provided him a sales platform as well as on-the-road accommodations. Once retired from the road, the Keely combo lived in storage for many decades until its recent restoration.

The nautical-themed, custom-built, single-axle camper is a 20-foot-long rolling fishing cabin with twin bunk beds, a hooded gas stove, icebox, sink, writing desk and cabinets housing Keely’s original enamelware cookery and utensils. A 25-gallon water tank with hand pump serves the camper, and an attachment allows “shore water” to be piped aboard. Model A cranks and regulators operate the trailer’s windows, and brass screens keep the mosquitoes away.

The restorer carefully recreated the lettering that decorated the exterior of Keely’s caravan, advertising products such as Rain-Beau Fishing Lines and Sea HorseBrand Fishing Tackle. A veritable boatload of rare fishing supplies – rods, lure, floats, oars and small outboard motors – is included with the sale, as is every scrap of paper and notebooks full of photographs Keely kept to document the life of this car and camper.

“This Model A and travel trailer combo is a real find for us,” said Auctions America by RM’s President Donnie Gould. “Our Car Specialists are always on the lookout for vehicles that grab attention and set us apart from our competition. We are very happy to offer this 80-year-old travel rig with so much genuine nostalgic value and history.”

In addition to the nearly 1,500 cars for sale, Auburn Fall will feature a seminar and special display devoted to the 50th anniversary of Carroll Shelby’s legendary Cobra and Mustang sports cars.

Tickets to the auction are $15 for a daily pass or $40 for a full event pass, and admission is free for the preview on Wednesday, Aug. 29. There is no charge for the ample on-site parking. The auction runs Thursday, Aug. 30, through Sunday, Sept. 2. Internet, absentee and telephone bidding options are available for those unable to attend the event in person. Full event details and a list of auction offerings areavailable online at www.auctionsamerica.com or by calling toll free 877-906-2437 (or +1 260-927-9797 outside North America). The auction will stream live online at www.auctionsamerica.com to provide real-time coverage of the event.

BIKERNET MEDICAL CENTER DISCOVERS Coffee’s Consequences–Here’s some good news for coffee lovers – drinking java regularly might lower the risk of death. Results from a recent study indicate that seniors who reported drinking a few cups of coffee daily were less likely to die from heart disease, stroke, infections, injuries and accidents than those who didn’t drink coffee at all or those who rarely drank it.

The study looked at the coffee-drinking habits of more than 400,000 men and women who were between the ages of 50 to 71 in 1995 and 1996 and took part in nutrition surveys that included questions on coffee consumption. The researchers tracked the participants through 2008 to learn how many of the participants had died and what caused their deaths. They found that men who drank between two and six cups of coffee per day were about 10 percent less likely to die from any cause than men who didn’t drink coffee at all. Women coffee drinkers had up to a 16 percent reduced risk of death compared to women who didn’t report drinking coffee. The researchers weren’t able to hypothesize what it is about drinking coffee that might lead to a longer life. The study was published in the May 17, 2012 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine.

My take? I never developed a taste for coffee and don’t get a buzz from caffeine, but I have been following the accumulating evidence on coffee’s effects on health. Some studies have shown that drinking coffee isn’t harmful to cardiovascular health and may be beneficial. And a study published in 2006 showed that men from Finland, Italy and the Netherlands who drank coffee had lower rates of age-related cognitive decline than those who didn’t. Other studies have been less clear-cut about coffee’s health benefits. If you don’t drink coffee, I wouldn’t advise you to start on the strength of the latest findings, particularly if it makes you jittery, anxious, or irritates your digestive system, bladder or prostate.

Bikernet / Cycle Source 15th Anniversary Giveaway Chopper Runs Zero Growth Metzeler Rubber–Win the XPress Lid Custom Chopper from Bikernet.com & Cycle Source Magazine.

Metzeler is providing ME 880 rubber for the Bikernet/Cycle Source 15th Anniversary Giveaway Chopper, sponsored by XPress Lid and Spectro Oil, which is being awarded at the Las Vegas Bikefest this fall.

Cycle Source Magazine and Bikernet.com are showcasing the build and reporting on the style of bikes that their readers enjoy and like to ride. Choppers like the ones that roll out of the custom giveaway chopper builders, Chop Docs and Kustoms Inc., are light weight, fast and provide serious fun. Each month Cycle Source Magazine will run an article from the build team. Videos and additional articles are hosted at www.Bikernet.com and www.winthechopper.com.

“The winner of the $55,000 Giveaway Chopper will receive the benefit of riding on Metzeler, which includes improved stability, increased mileage and greater feedback from their custom-production sled,” explained Chris Wall, Metzeler Motorcycle Marketing.

One of the benefits of Metzeler tires is the ability of the tire not to grow when they get hot. This allows custom builders to bring the fender closer to the tire and deliver a more custom look.

“Younger riders are looking at choppers as an alternative to standard production and import motorcycles,” said Chris Callen, Editor of Cycle Source Magazine. “The no-growth Metzeler tire allows us to create a signature styling, the slammed look, which really resonates with our readers.”

Product sponsors for the Bikernet/Cycle Source 15th Anniversary Giveaway Chopper include Rivera Primo Inc., 3 Guyz, ACCEL Motorcycles, Aeromach USA, Bare Knuckle Choppers, Biker’s Choice, Barnett Clutches, Bell Helmets, Crazy Horse Motorcycles, D&D Exhaust, Evil Engineering, Fab Kevin, Hawg Halters, Grip Ace, Rocking K Custom Leathers, Spectro Performance Oils, Texas Bike Works, Wire Plus and XPress Lid by SmartCup.

Enthusiasts can win the custom chopper in one of three ways. They can (1) purchase a subscription; (2) renew a subscription; or (3) send in a postcard. To get all the details on how you can win the chopper motorcycle, logon to www.cyclesource.com, www.winthchopper.com or www.bikernet.com.

POLICE EAVESDROPPING FIX PASSES STATE HOUSE–Measure would allow recording of officers in public place By Alissa Groeninger, Chicago Tribune reporter

SPRINGFIELD — In the wake of the NATO summit, the Illinois House approved legislation Tuesday that would allow citizens to record a police officer who is on duty and in a public place.

The vote represented a key moment for a bill aimed at fixing a state law deemed so unfair that Chicago announced it would not be enforced during the summit, a move made as the city ramped up for NATO and for the protesters who would hit the streets.

Chicago police Superintendent Garry McCarthy previously has said he supports letting people record the police and vice versa. Pressure for change also comes from multiple court rulings that the eavesdropping law violates the First Amendment, a point underscored by sponsoring Rep. Elaine Nekritz, D-Northbrook.

Republican Rep. Chapin Rose of Mahomet said the current ban is hard to defend in today’s smartphone world.

Illinois is one of only a handful of states where every party involved must give consent. Making an audio recording of a police officer without consent is punishable by up to 15 years in prison under current law.

Nekritz wants to change the law so police would no longer have to give consent for audio recording. She also amended a previous, failed version of the bill to make clear that people who manipulate recordings of law enforcement officials can be prosecuted.

Oddly, current law allows video recordings so long as the sound is not recorded. Speaking against the new legislation, Rep. Dena Carli, D-Chicago, said that’s because it’s easy to record video from a distance, but recording audio would require a bystander to get closer to an officer, said Carli, a Chicago police sergeant. “That’s a danger to the officer,” Carli said.

The bill now moves to the Senate, which on Tuesday sent Gov. Pat Quinn a separate eavesdropping measure aimed at helping police record drug deals faster. The legislation would allow law enforcement officials to make audio recordings of drug deals with only the permission of a state’s attorney instead of a judge.

“By that time, the drug dealers are gone,” said Democratic Sen. William Haine, a former Madison County state’s attorney.

Democratic Sen. Tony Munoz, a Chicago police officer, said the measure would better protect undercover police. He dismissed constitutional questions raised in debate, saying the courts can review the law. “But if we can save an officer’s life, I think it’s worth it,” Munoz said.

The Senate also sent Quinn legislation that would bar an employer from requesting a password or other account information from a prospective worker’s Facebook page.
Senate Republican leader Christine Radogno of Lemont won passage on a 55-0 vote, with two voting present. Radogno called the bill a “reasonable protection of people’s privacy.”

In addition, the Senate sent the governor legislation that seeks to crack down on misuse of parking placards reserved for disabled drivers. The legislation creates a two-tiered system, according to Sen. Maggie Crotty, D-Oak Forest.

In 2014, only people who use wheelchairs or are otherwise physically unable to feed meters would be able to park in metered spots without having to pay. Others with disabled parking placards could keep parking in handicapped-only parking lots and garages, but not get free parking in metered spots, according to Crotty.

The plans were for a test & tune session will be Friday from 3-6, where Smitty would get the first passes on his newly re-build drag bike. But after that Mother Nature had her way and brought in the rains, first a soft drizzle, then all day rain-rain rain.

But Smitty did run three 8.90’s on Saturday, really great passes any day and especially out of the trailer. Look for lower ET’s and faster mph’s as the season progresses.

AMA STUDY PRESS RELEASE REVIEW–  A few days ago I received a call from the Allentown Morning Call asking for input on motorcycle helmets and helmet laws and their impact on motorcycle statistics. I was advised that a new study was going to be released soon and it was not favorable. I advised the reporter that I was a bit confused. I explained that we had just held our annual Motorcyclists Rights Rally and that it had been reported that nationwide fatalities were down 2 % and in PA 11%. In addition, it’s been 9 years since we modified our helmet law and when comparing fatality rates and taking into consideration the increase in registrations despite a poor economy, we are doing well.

To make a long story short, that report is out and I am sure over the next few days every newspaper in the state will be reporting it and bikers will be calling the ABATE office asking us to respond. Those of you who were at the Rights Rally had the opportunity to hear Rob Dingman, President and CEO of the American Motorcyclist Association. We have had a long and successful relationship with the AMA.

I encourage everyone to seriously consider becoming a member of the AMA if you are not already a member. I cannot think of a better example of their importance and effectiveness as this quick response proves.

NEVER A DULL MOMENT—This Spitfire Mudflap Girl bike I built is absolutely the most comfortable bike I’ve ever straddled, but now we’re fine-tuning the suspension. Since it’s a custom application the rear shock angles weren’t exactly FXR, but more like Dyna Glide configuration. This has forced me to learn about spring rates, shock sag, travel, and tires hitting fenders.

I’m working with David Zelma at Progressive suspension. They are capable of virtually any shock configuration, but the formula his an interesting mixture of measurements, spring rates, bumpers, and sag. I want the bike to set just right yet give me enough travel to enhance the ride. I believe we are getting closer.

Then we started to mess with the Spitfire girder shocks. Rick Krost has taken little motocross bike seat shocks apart and cut top Springer springs to fit. The existing springs are rated at 300 pounds apiece. That’s too coarse for a comfortable ride, but the springer springs were too soft and the shocks collapsed. I’m working on plan B, and of course I punched in McMaster Carr and they have everything. I can probably order several sets of springs and get exactly what I need. By hook or crook, I’m going to ride this weekend.

We have more book reviews headed your way, an antique Indian from the Sturgis Museum, and a report on the Ride Through Time show and the World Golf Village in St. Augustine. Plus I’m scrambling on another Cantina episode and another chapter of World Run. Like I said, Never a Dull Moment around the Interplanetary Headquarters.

Ride Forever,

–Bandit
