Bikernet Thursday Post Laughlin News Flash –

Hey,
This is going to be an earth shaking, do or die news.
It’s also packed with “Chance of a Lifetime” items, and Laughlin images. So take it slow and give it some thought. At the end I’ll fill you in on upcoming Bikernet editorial.

This was a pressurized week, but it’s beginning to come to fruition. Confronted with Motorbooks 1%er book edits, I was scrambling to do my part. But I also came face to face with our ATK Road Test article.

This is a brand new entry level motorcycle being introduced to our market by Frank White, and Bikernet had the first shot at a road test. You’ll see the facts and figures tomorrow or Saturday morning.

Then I decided to write the epic history of Bikernet since it’s our 15th year. Good god, what a daunting task.

I had to figure out when we built the Blue Flame, when I hit the deer, and when we moved into our existing 1923 building. It’s nuts, but for new readers; it will spell out the big steps we took to get to this point.

Let’s hit the news:

WILD FEATURE COMING TO BIKERNET– I’ve got a 1995 Dyna Wide Glide and as probably most ’95 bike past their prime and beginning to fade away and become nothing more than
a parts bike. I kinda did not want my bike to end up in a bone yard. I decided to do a total restoration .

Now, here is where a very unusual place for a restoration happens. I do mean a total restoration engine, transmission tin dash-board instruments wiring, painting everything. By now I think that you kinda get the picture as to what I wanted to do.

I live in New England and we are known for long brutally cold winter so that meant that the family garage was out of the question. Having a
strong desire to restore the bike, I needed to find a heated place where I could work on it often.

Well I did find the perfect place. I asked my boss for permission to build the bitch in his back room and to my surprise he said yes. What a lucky guy I was. I got to do the two things that I love more then anything else. Sex and the bike. My boss owns a several sex shops. Imagine my motorcycle saw more ass that winter than any other bike has ever seen. The bike was reborn in the back room of a porn shop while the shop was operating as usual every day and night. We certainly pulled more than a one all night er. This was much better than Milwaukee.

I’ll send along some pics I think that this could make a real interesting story for your readers. After all how many bikes are built in a porn shop?

THE SMOKE OUT IS ABOUT CHOPPERS– The Smoke Out is about choppers. It is about builders, from professional builders to those bloody-knuckled guys (and ladies) burning the midnight oil in an unheated shed to build a chopper they can call their own.
The Smoke Out is coming up on June 24-25, 2011.   Get the details!

PLEASE DON’T FORGET NEXT SATURDAY!!!!!!

WALK NAKED IN AUSTRALIA DAY–Don’t forget to mark your calendars.  As you may already know, it is a sin for a Muslim male to see any woman other than his wife naked and if he does, he must commit suicide.

So next Saturday at 1 PM Eastern Time, all Australian women are asked to walk out of their house completely naked to help weed out any neighborhood terrorists. Circling your block for one hour is recommended for this anti-terrorist effort.

All patriotic men are to position themselves in lawn chairs in front of their houses to demonstrate their support for the women and to prove that they are not Muslim terrorist sympathizers. Since Islam also does not approve of alcohol, a cold 6-pack at your side is further proof of your patriotism.

The Australian government appreciates your efforts to root out terrorists and applauds your participation in this anti-terrorist activity.

BIKERNET UNIVERSITY POLITICAL SCIENCE CLASS LESSON–A young woman was about to finish her first year of university. Like so many others her age, she considered herself to be Labor Party minded, and she was very much in favour of higher taxes to support her education and for more government programs – in other words, the redistribution of wealth.

She was deeply ashamed that her father was a rather staunch blue-ribbon Conservative, a feeling she openly expressed. Based on the lectures that she had attended and the occasional chat with a professor, she felt that her father had for years harboured a selfish desire to keep what he thought should be his.

One day she was challenging her father on his opposition to higher taxes on the rich and the need for more government programs.

The self-professed objectivity proclaimed by her professors must be the truth, and she indicated so to her father. He responded by asking how she was doing at university.

Taken aback, she answered rather haughtily that she had a 90% average, and let him know that it was tough to maintain, insisting that she was taking a very difficult course load and was constantly studying, which left her no time to go out and party like other people she knew. She didn’t even have time for a boyfriend, and didn’t really have many university friends because she spent all her time studying.

Her father listened and then asked, “How is your friend Audrey doing?” She replied, “Audrey is barely getting by. All she takes are easy classes, she never studies and she barely has a 50% average. She is so popular on campus; university for her is a blast. She’s always invited to all the parties, and lots of times she doesn’t even show up for classes because she’s too hung over.”

Her wise father asked his daughter, “Why don’t you go to the Dean’s office and ask him to deduct 20% off your average and give it to your friend who only has 50%. That way you will both have a 70% average, it would be fair and you would both be equal.”

The daughter, visibly shocked by her father’s suggestion, angrily fired back, “That’s a crazy idea; how would that be fair! I’ve worked really hard for my grades! I’ve invested a lot of time, and a lot of hard work! Audrey has done next to nothing toward her degree. She played while I worked my tail off!”

The father slowly smiled, winked and said gently, “Welcome to the Conservative side of the fence.”

If anyone has a better explanation of the difference between Conservative and Labor/Greens, I’m all ears.

If you ever wondered what side of the fence you sit on, this is a great test!

If a Conservative supporter doesn’t like guns, he doesn’t buy one.
If a Labor/Green doesn’t like guns, they want all guns outlawed.

If a Conservative is a vegetarian, he doesn’t eat meat.
If a Labor/Green is a vegetarian, he wants all meat products banned for everyone.

If a Conservative is gay, he quietly leads his life.
If a Labor/Green is gay, he demands legislated respect.

If a Conservative is down-and-out, he thinks about how to better his situation.
A Labor/Green wonders who is going to take care of him.

If a Conservative doesn’t like a talk show host, he switches channels
Labor/Greens demand that those they don’t like should be banned.

If a Conservative is a non-believer, he doesn’t go to church.
A Labor/Green non-believer wants any mention of God and religion silenced. (Unless it’s a foreign religion, of course!)

If a Conservative reads this, he’ll forward it so his friends can have a good laugh.
A Labor/Green will delete it because he’s “offended.”

ELECTRIC MOTORCYCLES IN OUR FUTURE–  As a society, we’ve done a good job of convincing soccer moms to swap out the van for the Prius. However, I’m probably just as skeptical as a Harley owner when I hear Pike Research’s projections that there will be 138 million e-motorcycles on the roads by 2017.

The Txchnologist, GE’s new digital magazine on tech and science, has an excellent post on three of the newest and hottest electric bikes: The Take: Who Holds Back the Electric Motorcycle . Maybe these models are the first step toward reaching that goal?

BIKERNET MEDICAL CENTER PEA TEST–Three Reasons to Eat Peas.

Fresh green peas are a naturally sweet and delicious addition to any spring meal. They are a good source of vitamins K and C, manganese and fiber, and may help promote bone, cardiovascular and gastrointestinal health. There are three popular pea types:

* Green or garden peas, which have inedible pods
* Snow peas, a version with edible pods popular in Asian cooking
* Snap peas, an edible-pod cross between the green pea and the snow pea

Snow and garden peas are available in early spring, and look for snap peas later in the season. No matter which variety you choose, buy them as fresh as possible. Although you can store them in the refrigerator for several days, they are best enjoyed the same day.

EUROPEAN MEP RIDE — On May 5 the MEP Ride, the motorcycle ride for Members of the European Parliament, will bring politicians, diplomats and civil servants from the EU institutions to Clean Week 2020. Organised by the Federation of European Motorcyclists’ Associations and under the patronage of the four MEPs Frieda Brepoels, Bernd Lange, Toine Manders and Wim van de Camp the MEP Ride, with about 100 people on motorcycles, will depart from the European Parliament in Brussels at 3pm and is expected to arrive at Circuit Zolder at `5pm.

In Zolder a big variety of electric scooters, mopeds and motorcycles are available for MEP Ride participants for testing. MEPs and other European decision makers have the possibility to experience the future of sustainable two- and three wheel mobility and to overcome prejudices related to motorcycling.

While professional trainers assist on test tracks for beginners and advanced riders, Joël Smets, winner of five Motocross World Championships, will present electric motocross bikes on an off-road track. Electric motorcycles are even allowed to go on the race track and some MEPs are expected to seize this opportunity.

JIMS TOOL OF THE WEEK– Tappet Pump and Test Stand: Harley-Davidson valve trains consist of many parts working in concert with one another. If one component fails you could be left on the side of the road or worse! That’s why JIMS developed the Tappet Pump and Test Stand No. 765 & No. 766.

By utilizing this innovative new tool you can now completely fill your standard size hydraulic tappets, physically inspect them and with the help of a drill press, check for proper feel.

Gone are the days of leaking or spongy tappets that can decrease performance. Mechanics can now have the confidence of knowing tappets won’t stick or bleed down once installed.

This tool is available for both Twin Cam (No. 765) and Evo (No. 766) applications. The Twin-Cam model ships with everything you need, except the drill press. For standard size hydraulic Evo tappets, install the sleeve No. 766 into the tool body and you’re ready to go.

OSAMA BIN LADEN DEAD–A couple of nights ago, President Obama announced that the United States has killed Osama bin Laden, leader of al Qaeda and a terrorist responsible for the murders of thousands of innocent people. He made clear that even though Osama bin Laden has been brought to justice, Americans should remember the spirit of unity in the days after 9/11 as we continue to secure our nation and work for a safe and prosperous future.

This is a time to be proud to be an American. We are beginning to see real success in our war campaigns. Korea and Vietnam were tough pills to swallow. In the end South Korea is a wonderful place, and Vietnam ultimately came around and we see an exciting future for the Vietnamese people. More recently we went to war in Afghanistan and succeeded. We killed Bin Laden, gave Iraq back to the people, and killed Sadam Hussien by hanging. It looks like Libya is next. I don’t know about you, but I like positive success ratio, and I’m damn proud of our soldiers.

Now, we just need to prove to our government that freedom will work at home.–Bandit

CUSTOM CYCLE ENGINEERING PRODUCT OF THE WEEK, Pivot Bearing Retro kit FLH/FXR–
Custom Cycle Engineering has solved the age old issue with Cleve Bloc style pivot bearing replacement. This retro kit replaces the old Cleve Bloc style pivot bearing with the new
modern spherical bearing found in the 2002 to present FL models.

The spherical bearing reduces the drag found in the cleve bloc. Less friction allows the swing arm to move quicker with the suspension. The spherical bearing also helps negate
any lateral and torsional movement in the swing arm by the sheer dynamics of the spherical bearing.

Kit comes with or without a new pivot axle.
Update your old ride.

AUSTRALIAN CANNONBALL RUN RAT RACE —Cannonball World Event’s Managing Director, Tim Porter, will be in Sydney at 9am on the 20th of April and will be touring Australia promoting the event until the 11th of May.

The dawn of a new era…

The 19th of February, 2012 will announce the birth of an all new Cannonball Run event to hit Australia…The Cannonball Run Rat Race.

The infamous car rally ‘The Cannonball Run’ meets ‘Raiders of the Lost Ark’ head on in a 3000 kilometre madcap full – on road rally, in a quest to win a brief case crammed with cash which is hidden in a secret location.

No engraved cups to win, no big speeches, no pat on the back… just good old Australian Dollars. A LOT OF AUSSIE DOLLARS!

In February 2012, Brisbane will be rudely awakened to the sound of engines revving and the smell of high octane fuel as cars and competitors gather for the very first Australian Cannonball Run Rat Race event.

It’s a totally fun – filled, exciting, yet simple idea. Use your brains and your driving brawn to follow the clues, outwit your fellow competitors and find a hidden suitcase full of stashed cash. Only problem is… it’s 3000 kilometres away from where you start. The Rat Race is The Cannonball Run with serious financial attitude. It’s all about brainpower, navigation and the desire to win the mountain of money.

Drivers will be given a key to a hidden locker which is just their first clue. Where is the locker? and how to do they get there to grab the money first?

Their task is to then crack the code given out at each morning’s check point and collect the five numeric codes which will then match up to a post code. The sixth clue will release the actual address of that post code and where the hidden locker holding the cash prize actually is. Simple, yet tantalisingly brilliant. It’s an event super – loaded with fun and has the potential for complete chaos and mayhem as the cars and competitors make their way down Australia in search of the money.

The trick is, don’t get arrested by the cops, don’t speed, don’t get lost, don’t upset the local natives and amidst all of this, beat off the competition to reach the cash first. Not easy.

That’s the painless part. They’ll also need to survive a barrage of infamous full on Cannonball parties. A challenge in itself. Each night will see the ‘Cannonball Cash Seekers’ stay at a luxury hotel where the legendary cannonball parties take place. This isn’t picnic time. The food is delicious, and the accommodation sumptuous. It’s all about reaching out with your ability to ‘get down and wild’ with the other competitors. It’s all about having fun, letting off steam and bonding.

And there’s also a gut- churning track day to be enjoyed at one of Australia’s premier race tracks. Rats on a track. Now that’s a first!

It’s an Australian TV ‘caper movie’ in the making.

Can the drivers crack the code, get there in one piece and grab the cash? Let the fun begin….

Entries are strictly limited to 60 cars for the 2012 event and drivers can enter on line from the events website www.cannonballworld.com

BIKERNET HIRES PRIVATE TRAINER, DR WEIL–  We all know the “secret” of successful weight loss: Eat less and exercise more. It’s not always easy, but by adopting healthy eating habits and a regular exercise routine, you are sure to lose weight without depriving yourself of nourishing, satisfying food. And if you continue those good habits after you reach your goal, you will have an excellent chance of maintaining your desired weight. Here are some tips for successful weight loss:

1. Avoid artificial sweeteners and synthetic fat substitutes. They are unhealthy and don’t help you develop good eating habits.
2. Dietary supplements or “fat-burning herbs” are usually just stimulants – don’t rely on them. The pounds will surely return once you’ve stopped taking them.
3. Build lean body mass. Strength training burns excess calories and influences the way your brain regulates hunger, making you less susceptible to food cravings.
4. Pay attention to the mental and spiritual aspects of weight control. Use relaxation exercises – instead of food – to combat anxiety.
5. Accept your body. You may see it as less than perfect, but it is beautiful just the same.

You don’t have to take a second mortgage on the house just to build yourself a motorcycle. The key is the use of a donor bike for most of the components, so skip the fancy shit and build yourself a back-to-basics chopper or bobber – at home – for $5,000.00 or less.

How to Build a Cheap Chopper from Wolfgang Publications documents the cheapest way to build a chopper by using a 1970s vintage Japanese four-cylinder drivetrain installed in a hardtail frame. No, it ain’t a Harley, but it’s probably faster and way less expensive.

Next up — price wise — are three bikes built using Buell/Sportster drivetrains. A complete used Buell or Sportster is an inexpensive motorcycle — and comes with more than just an engine and transmission. A clever builder can often use the wheels and tires, brakes, wiring harness and all the rest — just add a hardtail frame and accessories to suit your tastes. At the top of the food chain, the least cheap of the cheap choppers, is bike number 4. This big-twin chopper uses a RevTech drivetrain set in a Rolling Thunder frame.

Written by Timothy Remus, the book uses over 400 color photos shot in the shops of Brian Klock, Motorcycle Works, Redneck Engineering and Dave Perewitz to illustrate the start-to-finish construction of 4 bikes. Cheap Chopper, normally priced at $27.95 can be had this week on Bikernet for only $17.95 with free shipping to continental US addresses. So don’t be saying, “Someday I’m going to build a bike of my own.” Go buy a Sportster or an old Honda, spend eighteen bucks on this Wolfgang book, and get to work. Riding season is here!

BIKERNET TECH QUESTION–  I need help. I own a 1996 FLHT and have a bit of a PROBLEM. A little after purchasing the bike the key barrel on the ignition switch went to crap and I was unable to lock it. I tried getting a replacement but that proved itself impossible so I then decided to go by my parts book and get a new ignition switch for her. It turned out to be wrong.

I have been searching for probably the last year or so for a key + ignition switch as I cannot leave the bike unattended by fear of having her stolen. I attached a drawing of the part for your consideration. The so called Harley dealers here, Australia, a f***ing useless and can’t tell me what the part number is. I only ever saw this system on one FLHT but at the time didn’t think about taking the VIN.

I’m hoping you will know what it is and maybe get a part # off you or even some info on other models it came out on so I can broaden my research.
Please forgive the drawing, I seem to have lost the original part in the move.
Regards,
Americo Dias

Since he is in Australia, I reached out to the tech editor of Heavy Duty Magazine in Aussieland, Smilin’ Doc Robinson, who reached out to a knowledgeable dealer. Here’s what came back:

Doc this could be confusing. I am guessing without VIN of the bike but anyway my guess is the customer has a “unique” lock type that may if fact be US domestic but without the VIN I cannot determine if the bike was AU delivered or imported.

Anyway easiest way is ask; does the custonmer have the knob style as listed below as #27 which is the HDI key/lock/ign style for FL models. I suspect he does not have this. I think he may have a solid mounted key housing. This bolts solidly to the top tree above the lock housing. Anyway, if this is what he has the part number 71532-95 and it should come with two keys. I have added picture below.

Also he needs to make sure the lock assembly itself is not damaged. (the main body of the lock) if this is cactus he will need to replace this as well.

ARIZONA TRIBUTE TO KIMMY AND CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING SUPPORTS FREEDOM EFFORTS–   We have a Championship boxing show on June 4 at the Celebrity Theatre in Phoenix. If there is an issue or measure you or your friends are trying to get on the election ballot by collecting valid signatures from registered Arizona voters, I might persuade the promoter to let a couple of people set up in the lobby with a petition and clipboard. It might be fitting to pay tribute to Kimmy at the fight. I’ll have to think it out first.

UNCLE MONKEY STUDIES THE COMPETITIVE SPIRIT–The thrill of competition. Pouring your heart and soul into the game. Some times you win, some times you lose but you can take solace in the fact that you gave it your all leaving it all out on the field.

The difference in winning and losing often comes down to hundreds of a second, an un-plated bolt, and missed read, a fumbled ball. For those of us that compete there is little room for error. We put the time in, practicing, perfecting. Some times it means relearning something a new way, a better way. We are always on the look out for that slight edge we can capitalize on. It is competition that makes us better. We savoir our victories, kiss the girl and hoist the trophy.

Competition is a part of life that sadly has disappeared in our children’s lives. They are plodded out onto the grassy fields, everyone tries, everyone wins no matter how bad they are. Organized sports have taken a real down turn in recent years. The experts say it is in the formality of organized sports, that constructive, rigid practice discourages kids who are easily distracted and are programmed by society for instant gratification. While there maybe some truth in that statement I feel the greater harm is in the everyone wins philosophy.

I was lucky enough to grow up in a time when playing sports, competing in something meant winning or losing. I hated the long hours of practice, my coach riding me to try harder to dig deeper. I would have much rather been scrimmaging than running suicides, fielding grounders. But soon I began seeing the payoffs in the games, they became easier, wins out numbered loses and it pushed me to work harder.

Coaches and teachers now a days struggle to make sports more appealing to our youth, trying to find out why Johnny will drop out of soccer to spend hours skateboarding. Perhaps the secret lies in the fact that in skateboarding there is failure, winning and losing. There is no going through the motions to receive a payoff. You can either do a trick or you can’t. Every time they miss they know they lost that time, but they are not discouraged because they know that it can be done.

They know the reward in learning a new trick is in the time not being able to succeed. Once they have tasted victory they want it more, they crave it. No longer happy with learning the sequences, now they want to master it, make it carefree and second nature that they can improvise from it. There is no reward for standing on the ramp, only in doing and doing well.

I judge motorcycle shows from time to time and people always ask what I look for. I don’t think that a winning bike should be as simple as showing up, as simple as bolting (or technically having the dealership bolt) on a bunch of random parts. There has to be effort, there has to be drive. You may not be able to afford the mile deep candy gloss paint job but that doesn’t mean your rattle can flat black should be full of runs, fish eyes and dirt. It means if your kickstand is rusted, pitted and flaking, sand it down and give it a shot of paint.

Take the time to study what others are building, what they have done. Ask questions and listen to the answers. There are no short cuts, no ribbons for participation. Get out there and compete.

BIKERNET TEXAS CORRESPONDENT MODIFYS V-ROD–I finally broke down and bought an Arlen Ness, Bob Dron Fairing for the V-Rod. Because it is designed for a Road King with a FL front end, I had to modify the brackets to make it work on my bike.

Using the drawing Dick Allen drew up after the pics I sent you last year as my inspiration, I think I have one of the few V-Rod’s with this conversion. I have only seen 2 others online thus far. I gotta tell you, I love it! The wind gets directed off of my chest and shoulders but seems to catch my head a little. I’ve already ridden it up to 80 mph on the freeway in the rain and I can tuck behind it enough to block the weather.

There’s plently of room to stash a pistol, flask of whiskey, and a map up front…so in my mind, it’s the perfect set up. Add all this to the fact that the bike can get to 100 mph faster than any other Harley, and I think I have a winning combination of style as well as peformance.

BIKERS ESCORT MOVING WALL TO WICHKAM PARK–Thousand of motorcycles escorted the Vietnam Veterans Moving Wall to Wickham Park in Melbourne Florida for the 24th annual reunion.

The wall is a 288 foot long, 6 foot tall replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington D.C. The wall will be on display at the park throughout the week.

On Thursday the 24th reunion will start in a different section of the park and run for 4 days. The name was changed a few years ago to include all veterans and is now called Vietnam & All Veterans Reunion.

It is the largest reunion of its type in the country and I strongly recommend attending it if you can. I will be there taking photos and doing a follow-up for Bikernet.

To find out more about the reunion and the schedule of events check out www.floridaveteransreunion.com

TIGERLILY IS SPEARHEADING FREEDOM OF CHOICE FOR NEVADA MOTORCYCLISTS–
Lots of developments, but we have a bit of time to address a specific issue and find in our hearts what it is about helmet choice that inspires us to be involved.

As many of you know, the PRIMARY reason I am determined get helmet choice in Nevada is to remove “probable cause” from sadistic, Nevada cops! Before you tune me out for making an “outrageous” statement, I ask that you to continue to read.

On March 10, 2011, I testified at the Nevada State Senate Transportation Committee that Nevada’s helmet law is being used by law enforcers as a means to violate us. I would not have believed this fully, had I not donned a modified LEGAL helmet onto my head and experienced tyranny for doing so, FIRST HAND. When I phoned Shirley Breeden, Senate Transportation Committee Chair that heard SB177 and was forced by us to bring it to a vote, Breeden told me she did not believe motorcyclists are being harassed by cops.

Ladies and gentlemen, motorcyclists are not the only persons getting violated – though we often take a bigger “hit” because we are a “minority” that often gets profiled. I would bet that every law-abiding African American in Las Vegas has at one point been unlawfully detained by a cop just for being “Black.” This is something many White-Americans deny. But if you are a White-American patched motorcyclist, odds are you’ll understand.

I do not believe abuses are a “racist/minority” issue. I believe that Nevada Law enforcers “pick” on people they can get away with violating, like the homeless and immigrants.

What’s the solution? Don’t just know your rights, know how to exercise them !!

That’s what I did on April 13, 2011. It was the day before David Stilwell had his helmet court case heard in District court (he is appealing a guilty finding – and that’s a good thing!)

On that April 13th day, I practiced what I preach by exercising my rights even while handcuffed for 56 minutes. No ticket, no charges, just a show of force for daring to take a video of them while working for us. Hope you get a chance to take a look at my 34 second you-tube and read some of the comments. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RY4R4hERCaA This you-tube has gone viral with some 2,500 views in 10 days. See what one blogger said about this vid…

Las Vegas police continue to harass, intimidate and threaten citizens who dare videotape them in public. … Last month we saw the video of a Las Vegas cop beating a man who continued to videotape him. And now here’s a video of cops ordering a woman to turn off her camera. The woman, who goes by TgrLilGzz on Youtube, said she was handcuffed for 56 minutes before she was released with no charges. http://www.pixiq.com/article/las-vegas-police-handcuff-woman-who-videotaped-them.

Some might say, “Leave the cops alone, their job is hard enough.” To that I’d say that leaving any government agency or agent alone, is un-American. While our military are out risking their lives finding and killing people like Bin Laden, we at home have a civic duty to supervise and hold accountable those who use our tax dollars.

How does this apply to helmet choice? It won’t eliminate tyranny – by far. But helmet choice is a huge step in the right direction toward increased freedom.

I’ll be keeping you posted on SB177 just as soon as I am 100% sure of what is going on. Stand by for a number of interestingly juicy insights about who is doing what to SB177. Let’s just say I have a surprising report about our ABATE of Southern Nevada.

In the meantime, it will help if you continue with your writing campaigns to remind our reps that they work for us and that We the People want SB177 to pass. (Please send me a copy.)

THE BIKERNET AFTERMARKET EFFORT REACHES A TURNING POINT– As you know I’ve been attempting to make something happen to support motorcycling and our industry for several years. I wanted to give the guys in the industry a shot at helping out and being involved. Nace Panzica tried a similar effort 15 years ago. We’ve come to a shit-or-get-off-the-pot turning point.

After SEMA basically turned us down, I approached the MRF, Motorcycle Riders Foundation. I have been knocking on their doors for over a year, hoping for a positive response. I finally received the following from Kirk Willard, the president. Now it’s up to us to prove we want to move forward.
After his letter I ran his e-mail address. If we want a voice in our future, each one of us needs to tell Kirk that we will step up and do whatever it takes to make it happen.–Bandit

Hey Bandit,

I appreciate your doggedness on this, we have this on the agenda to discuss at our May MRF Board of Directors meeting in Baltimore on May 12,13th.

Early read from our monthly MRF Board conference calls is that while this is extremely important work and work that we have invested significant effort and dollars in over many years that we may not be able to justify or afford
going it alone.

When we find various members of the aftermarket industry, and many of them influential, operating countercurrent to efforts to collaborate and unite the whole, including the MIC Aftermarket group, which is unwilling to engage outside of themselves. Plus the industry in general seems unwilling to financially support the effort, and the media (other than you and American Iron) are unwilling to promote any such effort, and the SEMA group is unable to see how it could work. I am not convinced an unfunded basically volunteer organization can carry the water for and unite an industry.

Sad because we may be the only real hope they have now that the TV show fame and money/Chopper craze is over. I don’t think enough of them realize what they are up against in efforts to shut down the way most of them do business.

Regardless of the outcome at the BOD meeting we will fight till death and bankruptcy if necessary to protect our members motorcycling freedom and ability to customize and modify their bikes and if that also benefits the aftermarket industry I trust they appreciate our efforts.

In closing I’ll never forget the recent meeting I was at, in a room full of people in Washington D.C. when the EPA official said you can do whatever you want to your bikes so long as it is limited to color and chrome. Chilling to think these days are upon us.

I am interested in your thoughts, convince me we can pull this off and how, for I have personally invested hundreds and hundreds of hours on this as have other Board members.

CCCS OFFERS 30 Day Money Back Guarantee on New Improved Simplified Air Suspension for Softails–Henderson, NV- Custom Cycle Control Systems, Inc. announced today the addition of their New and Improved Simplified Air Suspension System for softails or SAS for short…Now with a 30 day money back guarantee. The SAS is super easy to install and comes complete with mounting instructions.

The SAS has no compressor to mount, no pressure hoses to run, no fittings to fail…All you have to do is replace your old shocks with a new SAS unit and wire an on/off switch directly to the battery. Stay EPA Compliant on stock HD’s by not having to move canisters to make room for an ugly compressor. Fits all soft tail Harley-Davidson’s as well as custom production bikes. Its water resistant design is perfect for those that ride in inclement weather and they are manufactured right here in the good ‘ol USA.

Raise and lower your rear end at the touch of a button. Add air pressure to improve ride quality during changing road conditions or while hauling added weight. Also improving the ride quality is a “pre-set factory” dampening valve.

At approximately 150 psi, the bike will be fully raised and the suspension will be resting on its piston bumpers at *maximum ride height*. After that your height will not change, but you can continue to increase air pressure for improved riding during cornering or with a passenger.

Additional Features Include:
• Built in compressor
• Cylinder Pistons and Rods are doubled sealed (Pneumatic seals and top quality O-rings are forever protected and eliminate leaks)
• Pre-set factory dampening
• Easiest install on the market (no compressor to mount)
• Allows the full 4″ of swing arm travel
• Quick connect fitting with improved convenient breather line
• The pneumatic cylinders eliminate bottoming out
• Remote filtered air breather keeps compressor clean and dry
• All parts are CNC machined billet aluminum (3 year warranty/30 day money back guarantee/Lifetime warranty on machined parts)
• Moving parts are oil-impregnated (permanent lubrication)
• CCCS offers a 3-year parts replacement warranty
• Adjustable air pressure from 0 to over 250 psi

RIVER RAT SURVIVES THE UTAH TOUR– Yes, I am alive and back in NorCal. I’m trying to catch up on some severely lacking sleep/rest. The 800+ mile ride home was the longest ride ever, I swear. Three days of high wind advisories (2 semis were blown off the road and rolled) and it really beat the shit out of me. Rode through TWO swarms of bees..never had that experience before!

The company really wore us all out. Lots of u-turns and retakes trying for just the right film shots. A couple of the guys threw fits and yelled at the film crew. When I had enough i just split and waited up the road. Interesting adventure.

Lost about 20 pounds in this process and fell in love with the 2011 Heritage I was riding. Felt guilty for cheating on my trusty Nostalgia but got over it by the time I rolled in. There’s a new shipment form Saddlemens sitting here..new seat and HUGE saddlebags ready for install. Think that will help. Gonna be looking for a set of mini-apes now..the ones on the 2011 really helped with the neck/shoulder cramps I get with my current bars…and I liked having the crashbars to stretch out my long legs on. Don’t think I’ll put those on my bike tho. They look crappy.

BIKERNET WANTS TO KNOW–Why the World’s Fastest Indian didn’t see general release, so we are working with a highly trained hard riding journalist, Gypsy Raoul. He’s on the case to bring the story to Bikernet. Here’s a few of his notes so far:

I’m too analytical ? Guilty as charged … trying to put all that schoolin’ and all that experience behind me and fly by the seat of my pants but it’s damn near impossible to do.

By the way … the movie was released, IMDB states the following (the producer says they spent closer to $15M):

Budget:
$25,000,000 (estimated)
Opening Weekend:
$384,131 (New Zealand) (16 October 2005) (62 Screens)
Gross:
$18,297,690 (Worldwide)

Even though the movie didn’t do well at the box office it did receive a lot of awards down under (see attached). I’m trying to figure out how to get a handle on DVD sales and rentals …

I’m packing later today for an early morning departure to Albuquerque … talked to Bill Hayes, he’s getting a Silver Spoke award for his book American Biker – hope to spend a little time with him. Also talked to your friend Ray Wheeler … I offered to help him build a web site for raycwheeler.com – he seemed interested. He’s got great photos on Facebook – I’d love to get him started.

LIFESTYLE DEAL OF THE WEEK, 2006 ROAD GLIDE, AWESOME CUSTOM BIKE! ONLY $18,500.00–This bike is a total custom cruiser! It’s got a 21″ billet front rim, 18″ rear wheel, 14″ ape hangers, cruise control, Pioneer 7″ flip screen satellite radio, Alpine amplifier, four 6×9″ speakers, painted rims, iPod connector, custom paint, tons of chrome, matching inner fairing, and more.

WAY too many features to list here, you MUST see it in person! Like all of LifeStyle Cycles pre-owned Harleys, this bike has been thoroughly tested and inspected by a LifeStyle Cycles technician after undergoing a rigorous 38-point motorcycle inspection.

WAS THAT A NEWS OR WHAT–Drop the MRF a line if you want to see that effort happen. It can only better our chances at remaining free in the future, but we must step up.

So what’s next on Bikernet. I’m going to wrap-up my Evo engine tech with Bennett’s Performance and Branch O’keefe headwork next week, so the next Mudflap Girl FXR build tech is coming. Thad said he sent me his FXR feature story, so I need to finish it up.

Joel is putting the final touches to his blacked out Evolution Softail feature, so that’s headed our way, and Jerry Southworth picked another cutie for the Cantina.

Plus, we are beginning to work with a new tire company to the custom industry, Vee Rubber, based in Thailand. In fact, they will be apart of our Moto Journalist tour next year. They are the only company building 26-inch tires, I believe. They are also developing a complete line of whitewall tires. Check out the MetalSports web site. Ron at MetalSport signed up to distribute Vee Rubber. I will bring you the whole story shortly.

Have a helluva weekend.

Ride Forever,

–Bandit
