Bikernet Cannonball Thursday News

Hey,

We had an executive board meeting this morning. We discussed enhancing our classifieds area for more service to our readers, fixing the Bikernet Studio and running a daily or weekly video clip on the home page, running a girl teaser for the Cantina on the Home Page, kicking up the shop weekly offers, and firing up Bikernet Metric again with Josh Placa as the editor.

There’s a little blonde girl on the staff. She’s a hungry lesbian knockout who chases all the girls on the staff, while all the male staffers chase her. Her constant complaint is the same every meeting. “I thought we were going to slow down, kick back,” she grumbles and reaches for Sin Wu’s ass. “There’s Craig’s list and Ebay, who needs classifieds. There’s NBC and CBS, and cable, who needs videos? There’s got to be a long standing Metric Cruiser site, why do we need to go there again?”

Our general thinking and goals have always been to bring you a complete menu of services, or die trying. Whatta ya tink. Let’s hit the news:

OKLAHOMA RIDERS to pay $3 safety fee after Nov. 1–Oklahoma riders will start paying a new $3 annual fee Nov. 1 to help fund motorcycle safety training and education.

The new fee will be tacked onto existing registration fees for new bikes and renewals.

The state had 123,906 motorcycles registered last year, a 7.4 percent increase from 2008, according to Oklahoma Tax Commission records.

Most riders aren’t objecting to the fee, the Daily Oklahoman says.

Funds generated from the new fees will be spent on safety advertising and promotion, and possibly bringing mobile rider courses to the state. The Oklahoma Advisory Committee for Motorcycle Safety and Education will decide how to spend the money.

Tony Maxey, owner of family-owned Maxey’s Cycles in Oklahoma City, says if the money is used properly, it will benefit riders.

There’s nothing wrong with this fee, if the money is used for training, awareness campaigns, or road infrastructure studies. It’s up to us as bikers, to monitor the use of almost $360,000.–Bandit

HELMET LAWS DON’T WORK–  Rider education, driver awareness are better ways to prevent crashes.

Government officials will tell you that motorcyclists make up 2% of the vehicles on the road and 10% of the fatalities, and they would be correct. That sounds like a major problem. But what they don’t tell you paints a very different scenario.

Motorcycle registrations have more than doubled since 1997, and new motorcycle sales have quadrupled since then. Surely, when the population is increased one must expect the crash numbers to climb as well. Simple statistics.

The last time motorcycle deaths were as high as they are now was in 1986, when motorcycle registrations were slightly more than 5 million. In 2006, almost 6.5 million motorcycles were registered in this country. That’s an additional 1.5 million motorcycles and the same number of fatalities. Maybe the motorcycle fatality rate isn’t as out of control as some would like you to believe.

When motorcycle safety is addressed, it almost always revolves around one controversial issue: helmet laws. All but three states have a version of a helmet law on the books. Twenty-seven states allow riders to exercise choice when donning personal protective equipment, and the remaining 20 require all riders to wear a helmet of some sort. If helmet laws worked, there would be a sharp contrast concerning crash data between states that require universal helmet use and those that don’t. That isn’t the case.

According to a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration August 2007 publication, two of the three states that had the largest increase in fatalities from 2005 to 2006 have universal helmet laws (Alabama and California). Of the three states with the largest decrease in motorcycle fatalities over that period, two (Illinois and New Hampshire) have no helmet requirement, and the third (Ohio) allows experienced riders to ride without a helmet.

The bottom line is that helmet laws don’t prevent accidents. The best case scenario is to avoid the crash in the first place. How? Through proper, affordable rider education and widespread motorist awareness campaigns to educate the general motoring public to be aware of motorcycles.

Motorcycle safety requires a comprehensive approach, or we risk losing even more lives. Simply relying on a helmet law to reduce the number of fatalities has proved to fail time and time again.

MASSACHUSETTS ENACTS RIDER TRAINING FOR JUNIOR MOTORCYCLISTS– The Massachusetts Motorcycle Association (MMA) announces that Senate Bill 2344, dubbed Ryan’s Bill, an “Act relative to assuring that motorcyclists between the ages of 16 and 18 are provided with adequate education relative to the proper safety and operation of a motorcycle.” has been signed into law by Governor Deval Patrick.

Recognizing the additional burden formal training may require, MMA Legislative Director Rick Gleason states, “A weekend of formal training sets the stage for a lifetime of motorcycling enjoyment and the skills acquired through training can help a rider avoid a crash.”

This new law does not make training mandatory, and only affects those under 18 who wish to earn their motorcycle license. MMA Chairman Dave Condon further clarifies that passage of Ryan’s Bill does not require a junior operator take a motorcycle training course. “A motorcycle permit in this state is good for two years. Therefore, a junior motorcycle operator can still ride on hisher permit beyond their 18th birthday, and take the road test offered by the Registry of Motor Vehicles.” Condon further stated, “The MMA was very careful in not taking anyone’s choice away or interfering with a parent’s right to decide what is best for their child.” Condon also pointed out that current state regulations require 40+ hours of formal training before a Junior Operator may obtain a license to operate an automobile.

Motorcycle Rider Education Program (MREP) officials analyzed ten years of information from the Massachusetts RMV and found that just over 63% of those involved in fatal motorcycle accidents have never received any formal motorcycle rider training and 22.5% of motorcycle fatalities were from riders under the age of 21.

The MMA supported the legislation in honor of 16 year old Ryan Orcutt of Brockton who died in a motorcycle accident

Dani Pedrosa is a three-time motorcycle grand prix world champion in the 250cc and 125cc classes. He joined the Repsol Honda team in 2006. That same year he attempted an irrational pass on then teammate Nicky Hayden. The resulting crash nearly cost Hayden his 2006 championship and made enemies of American race fans. CANNONBALL HEADING INTO CALIFORNIA–  I went down to the Cannonball pits (travel trailers at the back of the hotel) last night and there sat Pete Young, rebuilding his 1913 Premier for about the nteenth time since the run began. He was sitting on a milk crate behind his pickup, tearing out parts and replacing them like there’s nothing to it. For the determined engineer, I guess it’s old hat. He expected to be done around 3 this morning.

This image of his bike’s guts reminded me of Frankenstein..sort of a Frankenbike…since the thing just keeps getting pieces parts and the light of Pete’s head lamp shone as electric purple.

CRUISIN’ PEGS FOR HOGS– Finally, a highway peg system that does not have to mount to the engine guards. If you are a rider whose feet cannot reach the crash bar, or the opposite, and your legs go past, then we have your answer. the Cruisin’ Pegs are CNC machined T6 6061 aircraft quality aluminum then chrome plated. They are designed to mount to the underside of stock Harley Traditional or similar Indian floorboards. They have a pivot pin feature designed to allow for three positions: (1) Up close (same distance as the brake pedal) (2) Middle (3) Way Out for 6’3″ and up riders. When mounted to the floorboards the Cruisin’ Pegs have the same clean look as a pair of forward controls. Will also work with factory engine guards.

CALL TO ACTION TO VETO California SB435
Vehicles: pollution control devices–
Purpose of the Call to Action: SB435 has passed CA Legislators and the Governor has until September 30th to make his decision.

The Governor has THREE choices of action:
Sign it into Law;
Use the Power of Veto;
Or do nothing and the Bill becomes Law without signature.

All Motorcyclists in the USA are urged to call, email and fax California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger to urge him to use his Power of VETO before the September 30th deadline!

California Governor’s Office:
Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger
State Capitol Building
Sacramento, CA 95814
Phone: (916) 445-2841
Fax: (916) 558-3160 (new number)

To email, go to: http://www.gov.ca.gov/interact#email

It is time for the USA motorcycle community to stand together with one UNITED voice and tell the establishment to STOP!! Governor
Schwarzenegger is the key person in the game and he needs to know that WE oppose SB435!

In case any of you have been living under a rock: THIS IS THE SINGLE MOST IMPORTANT MOTORCYCLE RIGHTS EVENT
HAPPENING ANYWHERE IN THE USA!

It promotes unfair enforcement, detainment and profiling of the motorcycle community!
It singles out motorcyclist as the primary source of noise!
It misapplies a federal standard intended for manufacturers onto the consumer!

Should this piece of legislation become law it will spread like a plague, and will lead to an onslaught of additional legislation that will
eventually make us all pedestrians.

This bill was NOT the mind-child of its sponsor CA Sen. Fran Pavley (D) 23rd district. It is FEMA, NHTSA and the Federal gov’t. It is
Law Enforcement and safety-crats that want us to disappear. It is the Nanny-crats that are hell-bent on saving us from ourselves.
They have chosen California as the battleground!

WE NEED TO MAKE OUR STAND, put aside our grievances with each other, the MRO’s and MSO’s and make some real noise.

I challenge you to pass the CTA on to ALL motorcyclist, organizations, clubs, and associations throughout the USA, and reinforce the
weight that this Bill has on the motorcycle community.

Legislative Affairs Officer

Damn, I’m bummed. I spent a half hour working on a letter to the governor, then didn’t save it. I’ll do my best to duplicate my bullet points:

More government: We don’t need more government in our troubled state. We need less government and fewer laws. It’s a nuisance ordinance and where will it stop, regulating stereos, garage bands, trucks, construction equipment, or what? In the noise pollution circles the easy target is motorcycles.

Regarding Government: We need to cherish and honor freedom rather than disregard these benefits. We need education over legislation. Educate riders to be respectful in residential neighborhoods.

Florida has reduced their accident and death rate substantially over the last four years after they repealed their helmet laws. Their effort revolves around training or education and awareness campaigns. In Europe, efforts are being made to make road infrastructure more motorcycle friendly.

Loud pipes save lives: It’s true. So, how many motorcyclists will need to die to prove another law was poorly thought out. In Europe, an area heavily regulated motorcycle noise, and then rescinded that law when accident rates increased. In an age of distracted drivers, riders need all the ammo they can muster.

UNCLE MONKEY GOES TO HOLLYWOOD–  I’ve switched gears recently, and I am very happy to be working with the Saskatchewan Filmpool. The ambitious goal is for the group of ten writers is to hammer out ten feature length scripts in four weeks. For builders out there it is the equivalent of building ten bikes in a month. Even the team at OCC would be hitting the walls. Being the biker of the group there is the pang to write the next “Easy Rider” movie. For those of us who write, it has been the lofty goal to put pen to paper to produce a movie, or at least a book that captures the freedom, the frustrations, the nuances of being a biker. It is a difficult task and a look at our DVD collections shows that few have accomplished that goal.

Biker movies have long been the redheaded stepchild of the film industry. Even in its heyday of the late ’60s and early ’70s they were quick, low budget films, most often focused on a famous motorcycle club. Recent offerings such as “Harley-Davidson and the Marlboro Man” and “Hell Ride” continue in that fashion. Loose story plots, plot holes big enough to ride a whole chapter through, and ridiculous motorcycle stunts, I’m looking at you “Torque”.

Most stories center around some sort of criminal element. It can’t be blamed. Guns, drugs and violence is only an arms length away even for the other 99% of us who ride.

The problem with writing the great biker movie is that the best part about being a biker is the ride. The countless hours on lonely stretches of highway with the wind, with our shadows that only thing able to keep up with us. Right now images are dancing through your head about your favorite stretch of road.

Even your best friend riding next to you cannot describe how you are feeling, the thoughts, emotions, smells, the vibrations that go into making that single moment. It is in those moments that made “Easyrider” such a great movie. The moments showing Wyatt and Billy riding across American. We feel the squirm in the handlebars; hear the whirl of rubber on the steel grating of the bridge. We’ve all been there, all experienced it. It is such an important aspect of riding, and yet two miles down the road we will have forgotten about it, moving onto the next.

I’m not writing the next great biker movie, not right now at least, instead taking the easy route of writing a romantic comedy. Sure, it is a cop out but when it comes to riding; if I have to explain it – you wouldn’t understand.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – The Massachusetts Motorcycle Political Action Committee (MMPAC) is pleased to announce its endorsement for David T. Vieira, State Representative, 3rd Barnstable District.

Noting the recent attempts to limit or curtail motorcycle riding in the Falmouth areas, MMA Legislative Director Rick Gleason stated, “It’s especially important for motorcycle riders in this District to exercise their right to vote in the upcoming general election and to wisely choose who they wish to select to stand up and fight for the rights of the motorcyclists. David’s belief that local government should work for the people would be an asset to the motorcyclists of Massachusetts.”

When presented with MMPAC’s formal “Request for Positions” statement regarding the Massachusetts Motorcycle Association’s (MMA) Legislative Agenda, David’s fresh approach was to actually attend formal meetings with motorcyclists and classic car owners to discuss the issues important to their respective positions before responding.

When notified of MMPAC’s endorsement of his campaign, David said, “I am pleased to receive the endorsement of MMPAC. Too often motorcyclists’ are given a bad rap for the actions of a few. I look forward to working with local riders on safety initiatives and noise issues in a way that respects motorcyclists’ rights and educates the general public. I am committed to an open dialogue on these issues.”

David currently is the Town Moderator for Falmouth, MA, having been elected to that position in 1998. At the time of David’s election he became the youngest moderator in Falmouth’s history and was reportedly the 2nd youngest in the history of the Commonwealth.

“Electing a Motorcycle-Friendly State Representative in this district, who will pay attention to motorcyclists’ issues, should be a goal of riders all across Massachusetts”, Gleason states.

MMPAC encourages all motorcycle riders to meet David T. Vieira at one of his state-wide events near you. David’s events listing can be found on his official web site at: www.VoteVieira.com

A comprehensive list of candidate and incumbent positions from those answering MMPAC’s request for a positions statement can be seen on the MMPAC Web Site (www.MassMotorcyclePAC.org ) by clicking the “2010-Elections – The Candidates” button.

WEEKLY SAFETY TIP FROM BIKERNET INSURANCE–STREET-CRACK GUNK CAN BRING YOU DOWN FAST–We have all seen them and ridden over them. Black tar snakes that cover crevices on streets and roadways. The sealant used by road repair crews can be hell for bikers when that sealant is over applied, soften by heat or when it freezes over and acts like ice.

The Sudden Sway or Slip
The problem occurs when you ride over them and for some reason at that moment, the tar causes your bike to sway and/or slip. This abrupt action can throw you off the bike before you even know what happened. The road irregularities caused by tar snakes can be a real problem so beware and extra-alert every time you see them.

Tar Snake Safety
Most tar snakes run parallel to the curb and some are perpendicular to the road. Run over properly and with attention, you can easily navigate over them without incident. It’s the sudden skid or slip that causes the abrupt instability.

Also pay attention when braking or when accelerating when tar snakes are present so that you can keep your bike steady. With a little luck, you’ll simply lose traction but you’ll recover quickly without incident.
Ride safe out there. We care about you.

THE KRYLON JOHN BIKER/BUICK REPORT– Buick to be Wild. We’re bikers it’s in our blood, give us a decent opportunity to fuck up and the odds are pretty good we will. Last Sunday was the Outriders annual picnic held in Oak Canyon Park next to Irvine Lake, and I got a chance to check it out.

A friend of mine has a 1912 Buick that he has been driving to the Outriders picnic since it was held in Newport Beach’s back bay. As I understand it that was a little bit of a while ago. The old girl is stored in a warehouse that overlooks the Pacific Ocean on the Newport bluffs, and that’s where we started our journey.

Dave fiddled with a bunch of levers and then what at first looked like he was going to pray to the car, turned into stuffing in a crank below the radiator shell and spinning the 4-banger to life. Since the very first Buick rolled out of the Flint Wagon Works in 1904, all Buick engines are OHV. The motor in Dave’s ’12 has a crankcase made out of aluminum, with two big separate cast-iron jugs that house the cylinders. The factory rating for the engine is 22-horsepower, so it got us to thinking that maybe the car might be freeway legal. After trying to figure out how the hell we were going to get to where we were going without using the freeway we decided it was.

The freeway travelers bolting through Irvine in their Lexus, Acura, and other trendy Japanese imports looked at us like the Martians had landed. They’re a cold lot, so it was hard to read their emotionless faces, but I think they were relieved to see Martian technology is at least a hundred years behind the times.

The Buick sits pretty high, so if we did collide with another car its likely I would have sodomized someone’s eardrum. Thinking about it got me to hoping it would be one those pretty little blonde female bi-peds with augmented breasts, and not some squinty-eyed bug eater with a chronic dandruff problem. As it turned out I didn’t get a chance to grease anyone’s aural canal, but it was a fun ride.

When we got there, I was amazed to find out I knew most of the people attending, and it was really neat to catch up on what they all were doing these days. In honor of the Buick’s wood spoke wheels I decided to fall off the wagon, and enjoy the free beer. Not long after that the food came, and we got a chance at eating seconds. At day’s end, sunburned, and bloated I waddled off to the Buick and climbed aboard. On the trip home we decided to jump on the freeway and try our luck again. As far as I know we were in compliance with the law, the Buick has over 15-horsepower, and it can maintain 45 miles-per-hour.

If I get invited to go the Outriders picnic next year, I think I’ll ride my 1918 Emblem bicycle. The enticement to commit an infraction of the law is just too tempting, and besides with all of the traffic on California’s freeways I’ll be able to split lanes and beat the cagers.

WEEKLY BAD COP REPORT–  ORLANDO, Fla. — A photo taken by a WESH 2 viewer this week showed an Orange County Sheriff’s Office deputy riding a motorcycle on Interstate 4 through downtown Orlando while looking at his cell phone.

WESH 2’s Amanda Ober reported that the deputy in the photo was riding at about 50 mph while holding a cell phone in his left hand and not looking at the road.

Glenn Victor, of the Florida Safety Council, had a strong reaction when he saw the photo.

“I don’t mind saying that if this guy really is texting while riding this motorcycle, he’s an idiot, because it’s unsafe for anyone to do that,” Victor said.

Victor said operating a motorcycle is much different than driving a car, and he said it’s critical that the motorcycle operator is aggressively searching his environment for possible obstacles and never taking his eyes off the road.

The OCSO investigated and interviewed the deputy who was photographed and concluded that the deputy did nothing wrong.

“The bottom line is there was no violation of agency policy nor was there a violation of state law, so it didn’t go any further,” said OCSO spokesman Jim Solomons.
The sheriff’s office said the deputy in the photo admitted that he flipped open his phone to look at the screen but then quickly put it away and said he was not texting.

According to the OCSO, the Orlando Police Department and the Florida Highway Patrol, it’s not a safety concern for an officer to briefly check a cell phone while riding a motorcycle.

“It’s just not that unusual for a deputy on a motorcycle to get a call, take a look at that screen,” Solomons said. “(It’s) no different than you looking at your speedometer or one of the functions of the motorcycle — looking at that call, getting the number, putting it in your holster and continue driving until you can deal with your request.”

The law enforcement agencies also stressed that their motorcycle officers receive special training on how to deal with distractions while driving. However, some people said they still think looking at a cell phone while riding a motorcycle is risky for anyone.

Bob Simon, of Altamonte Springs, said he has been riding motorcycles as a hobby for years. “No. 1, you’re not paying attention to the road,” he said. “Things can stop really fast in front of you. Stuff happens, potholes, whatever. No. 2, you only have one hand on the handlebar.” After looking at the photo of the deputy, Simon said he would never check his phone while riding.

CAR BUILDER BO HUFF HIT HARD–The custom car world has been hit hard lately with the deaths of some of its pioneers and significant practitioners. Custom painting innovator Larry Watson and West Coast Kustoms founder Rich Pichette both passed away in late July. Larry Alexander, elder half of the famous Alexander Brothers, died in August. We’re losing our heroes.

Another of our good friends and lifelong customizers, Bo Huff, was recently diagnosed with Stage 3 Mutliple Myeloma and is in treatment at Huntsman Hospital in Salt Lake City, Utah, one of the premier cancer institutes in the U.S. As you might guess, the treatment is very expensive and Bo’s medical insurance is not sufficient to cover all of the costs. If you know Bo, you know he is generous to a fault and has given to those in need many times. Now he’s in need. A fund has been set-up to help with his medical costs. If you can help in any way, here’s the information:

BO HUFF MEDICAL EXPENSE ACCOUNT
An account has been set up at Sunnyside Credit Union, 1 Market Street, PO Box 519, Sunnyside, Utah 84539, to help Bo Huff pay his medical bills.

Bo, a longtime resident of East Carbon, Utah and known throughout the United States for his talent in restoring automobiles, is battling cancer.

Bo cannot begin his treatment until he can prove his ability to pay $8000.00 per month for three consecutive months after receiving the initial treatment. Apparently, the medication required on a monthly basis supports the success of the treatment and treatment is not available to those who cannot afford this three month expense of $24,000.00.

THE MOJAVE MILE SEPT. 25TH AND 26TH SAT. AND SUNDAY–WHEELER RACING, SAN JOSE, CALIFORNIA, will be there–W.F.O. WITH NO EXCUSES! The an extremely diligent crew from Hardtailz, my hot rod and the anxious pilot (that’s me) are headed to the Mojave Mile for a hot date with the timed mile.

The Mojave event sponsors are waiving all late fees in an attempt to pull a few more participants into the event, this is the 2nd running of the Mojave Mile.

The W-Rated AVON TYRES arrived early Tuesday morning, they were installed within the hour. Pealed out for a test ride, rolled down 101 for a few miles after a 20 minute blast. Discovered a slight oil leak from a push rod tube, not to worry, it’s being taken care of. The new Avons and a solid 17″ mag off of a Duece have alleviated all rear wheel excuses that were used at Bonneville. While attempting two passes at the BUB meet we destroyed the rear spoke wheel, imagine that. Plans are to meet the riders in Victorville on Sat nite, then roll to Santa Monica Sunday after the track closes at 6:00 to meet Cannonball riders and their crews..

CAN’T WAIT FOR THE WEEKEND–I’m on a number of missions. I’m slowly going to tune several Bikernet chops, including the Sturgis Shovel. We are going to incorporate the JIMS lifter system. It will change the top end oiling system to an Evo style, and I’m looking forward to it. Here’s what the gang at JIMS say about this system:

With this kit installed in either a big 106-inch Shovel or in a stock 74-inch daily rider – you will now have all the same high performance hydraulic tappet function as JIMS high performance hydraulic tappet for EVO or Twin Cams.

Run the biggest cam you can find for a Shovel to help squeeze out all the horsepower you have put in your Shovel; with the right valves, valve springs, pistons and oil. No longer will the oil you have been trying to get to your rockers, through outside oil lines, be lost at the clearance around the rocker shaft to the rocker cover. With all four rocker shafts (new or used) having this clearance the amount of oil going to the rockers will be greatly reduced.

With these components; POWERGLIDE tappets, roller rocker arms, billet tappet blocks, adjustable pushrods,
gaskets and plugs, you will have a valve train system that works without any maintenance. No longer will valve adjustments be needed every 2,000 miles as before with other hydraulic or solid tappets.

Then we are going to install the dual Linkerts back on the Dicey Knucklehead. It’s about time. Chris Maida, the editor of American Iron is one his way to the Bikernet Headquarters for Friday breakfast. Ray is rolling to the Mojave Mile, and the Cannonball gang is headed for Santa Monica.

As of tomorrow morning I’m back to work on the 1%er book for Motorbooks. I’ve set and very ambitious goal to rough out ten chapters by the end of September. We’ll see if I make it.

Ride Forever,

–Bandit
