SLIPPERY WHEN WET: Belmont Shore’s Green Sharrows

When the “Green Sharrows”, or Shared Lane Markings, appeared on both sides of 2nd Street, I had concerns. First, it seemed dangerous to put bicycles smack into the heart of Belmont Shore congestion. Secondly, the six foot wide green paths looked slippery. It turns out that my first concern was proven wrong.  Installed in June 2009, the green sharrows in the right lanes from Bay Shore Avenue to Livingston have seemingly reduced bicycle accidents.  “Bike Long Beach” recently released traffic accident statistics between 2007 and 2013.Total crashes (car, bike and pedestrian) have fallen each year from 2009-2012. The number of accidents reported to police shows a high of 43 in 2009 versus 12 total in 2012LINK TO FULL STORY
