Idaho Patriot Thunder Ride for 2021 this Weekend

I can’t be the only one who does this, but every time a group of motorcycles drives by me when I’m driving I will roll down the window so I can hear each of them zip past me. I don’t ride motorcycles but I love the sound they make. This weekend there will be a whole bunch of opportunities to hear bikes as they fly by when the Idaho Patriot Thunder Ride happens this Sunday in I-84 between Meridian and Mountain Home.

What Is The Idaho Patriot Thunder Ride?

The Idaho Patriot Thunder Ride is an annual motorcycle ride organized by the High Desert Harley-Davidson. The motorcycle ride raises money for the Idaho Guard and Reserve, Family Support Fund, and the Operation Warmheart. This year will be the 11th annual event after taking a break last year due to the pandemic.

When Is The 2021 Idaho Patriot Thunder Ride?

The Idaho Patriot Thunder Ride for 2021 will happen on Sunday July 25th. The event starts at 8 AM and is expected to last until 5 PM. Participants in the Ride will meet at High Desert Harley-Davidson for sign in and breakfast. The group will then be led on a police escorted ride from the Harley dealership to Carl Miller Park in Mountain Home. The ride is about 55 miles each way and runs down I-84.

For those not participating, you can expect there to be delays as the bikes travel down the highway. If you’re going to be in that area it will be a nice opportunity to roll down your windows and listen to the thunder of the bikes as they drive by.

Registration can be done in advance online for $25 per rider or at the event for $35. A select number of VIP tickets are being sold as well for $100 and those get you placed at the front of the pack during the ride. The event is only open to 1,200 motorcycles.

Get all the details on the event on the ticket purchase website. We may not see, or hear, much from the event in Twin Falls but if Boise travel is in your plans on Sunday morning or afternoon you can expect to see lots of motorcycles and probably some driving delays.

Idaho State Police Shiny Side Up Motorcycle Rally

ISP hosting motorcycle safety rally Saturday

POCATELLO — Approximately 80 percent of motorcycle crashes can be attributed to operator error, according to Idaho State Police Sergeant Andrew Nakashima.

That is why ISP is partnering with Grand Teton Harley Davidson to host a free motorcycle safety class Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Shiny Side Up Motorcycle Rally will be held at Hillcrest High School, and feature training for motorcycle riders from beginner to experienced veteran, because, as Nakashima told EastIdahoNews.com, there is a lot of “bad information floating around.”

“There’s a lot of benefits to be gained from training,” he said. “I used to ride a motorcycle before I got this job, and everything I learned was from the guys I rode with — telling me to do this and don’t do that. Having gone through a formal training program to be a police motor, I realized how much of that was false.”

Nakashima recently transferred to Pocatello’s new ISP Motorcycle division from Meridian, where officers host a motorcycle safety training event every year. He hopes this event will have a similar effect, providing local riders with necessary safety courses annually.

The event, which will feature vendors and food trucks, is open to the public. To take part in the training courses, however, riders will need a motorcycle endorsement or training permit and proof of insurance.

No experience is needed, though.

“If you buy a motorcycle Saturday morning and you ride it on down to Hillcrest High School, we’ll have some riding coaches there and we’ll take you through the very beginner (course),” Nakashima said. “If you’ve been riding for a while, we’ve got some other patterns you can try your hand at. … But it’s not just for beginners. If you’ve been riding for 20 years, you might be surprised what you can learn just going through an intermediate cornering class.”

Along with instruction from ISP, riding coaches from Grand Teton Harley Davidson and Idaho STAR — Skills Training Advantage for Riders — will be in attendance.

Instruction will focus on the factors that play a role in operator-error crashes, including proper cornering and safe lane changing, along with collision avoidance.

“One of the driving forces behind this event is getting people to realize that you are responsible for your own safety,” Nakashima said. “It’s not up to cars to watch for you. It’s not good enough to put a loud pipe on your bike and say ‘loud pipes save lives.’ We really want to push the training aspect for riders.

“Motorcycles need training. That’s pretty much the bottom line.”

The 10th annual Idaho Thunder Patriot Ride

The 10th annual Idaho Thunder Patriot Ride is  Sunday, June 2nd and this year they’re giving away a Harley Davidson worth more than $10,000.  The Patriot Ride will take off Sunday morning around 9:30 from High Desert Harley Davidson in Meridian.  There is a 1,200 motorcycle cap so if you’re interested and haven’t registered, you can do so now by clicking HERE.

Registration in advance is $25 per person which includes the ride and the patch.  Day of registration is $30 per person. V.I.P. tickets are $100 and you can only purchase those at High Desert Harley Davidson.  V.I.P. includes a shirt, the ride, a patch, and front of ride placement.  The ride is limited to 1,200 people so make sure to register a.s.a.p.

The entire event will start at High Desert Harley Davidson (2310 East Cinema Dr.  Meridian, ID.) and ends 55 miles away at Carl Miller Park in Mountain Home.

It’s always so surreal watching our local law enforcement block off freeway entrances and escort all these riders through Boise who ride in honor of the Idaho Guard & Reserve, Family Support Fund, and Operation Warmheart.  It’s a sight to see.

The finale at Carl Miller Park will have live music, food trucks, and that’s where someone wins a Harley Davidson worth more than $10,000.  If you’d like to be in for that, tickets are $10 each or you can get six tickets for $50.  All the details are on the Idaho Thunder Patriot Ride Facebook page.
