Public safety officials in Delaware are reporting a spike in recent motorcycle fatalities. The Delaware State Police, Delaware Office of Highway Safety, Delaware Department of Transportation and AAA Mid-Atlantic made the announcement on Tuesday.

Officials say from January 1st to Memorial Day, there were 37 total motorcycle crashes, 5 of which were fatal. There were 40 motorcycle injuries and 6 motorcycle fatalities. The deaths took place in Oak Orchard, Wilmington, Fairfax, New Castle and Delaware City.

Sergeant Richard Bratz, the Director of Delaware State Police’s Public Information Office said “Throughout the year especially during this time when it gets warmer we see more preventable speed-related crashes. It is imperative to know that split second critical decisions are made by motorcyclists that impact every driver on our roads.”

Sarah Cattie, Motorcycle Traffic Safety Program Manager with the Delaware Office of Highway Safety said “Motorcyclists are vulnerable drivers on our roadways. It’s up to both riders and motorists to share the road according to Delaware laws that are put into place to ensure that everyone arrives at their destination safely.”

Officials urge motorcyclists to reduce speeds and keep headlights and taillights on at dusk or in dark or rainy conditions. They also advise protective gear like helmets and proper clothing, eyewear and footwear. Motorists are advised to be extra cautious on weekends and to provide adequate room for motorcycles to maneuver.
