BIKERNET HALLOWEEN NEWS – MEES CROWNED GRAND NATIONAL TWINS CHAMPION AT POMONA, LEE PARKS JELLO SHOTS TRAINING FOR CYCLE WORLD 2010 INTERNATIONAL SHOWS, PEGASUS EFI AVAILABLE FOR ANY SIZE V-TWIN ENGINE, SAXON MOTORCYCLES ON THE MOVE, FLAMED MIRRORS FROM AEROMACH AND MORE.

Don’t miss Elle, and this Kiwi Rocket bike feature in the near future.

Hey,

Another wild week on the front, but it’s getting downright exciting. The economy is coming around. The health care issues will be resolved in the next month. Iraq is under control and Afghanistan elections are being recounted. The CIA sends checks to drug lords and all is peachy.

Ace
Watch for this bike to be published in American Iron, then Bikernet. Amazing piece by Rodan and Don Whalen.

No matter what you think of the world politics, or our domestic issues, we still have motorcycle escapism. Thank the lord of metalflake paint. I spoke to Dave Rash, the President of D&D the other day. “Motorcycles are all about Passion,” said Dave. “No matter what, bikes are two-wheeled valiums. They take us away from all the bullshit.”

I also spoke to Lonnie Isem Jr. who is organizing the first pre-1916 cross country run in 50 years. The brothers are lining up to compete in this historic event, and Bikernet will be a sponsor and bring you reports right up until the starting gun is fired. Over 50 bikes ridden by the likes of Jesse James, Urban Hirsh, Don Whalen, Matt Olsen and Dale Walksler will pedal like mad to fire these spindly 15-25 horse relics and ride them across the country at a blistering 25-50 mph.

Bonne

So fuck it. The rest of the world can crumble, but we’ll keep riding and building fantastic motorcycles. Bikernet is headed back to Bonneville with our Bonne Belle, the 1940, 45 flathead with a K-model top end. And it might be a streamliner when we hit the salt. You’ll see all the reports on Bikernet. Hang on for the news:

Saxon group
The Saxon gang was on hand to support the BAD ride.

Doing good in the crisis,Rip’s B.A.D. Ride 2009, Arizona edition–It is not easy to raise money for a good cause in times like these, or even to get the event off the ground. The recent cancellation of the Love Ride sent shock waves not only through the motorcycle scene, but also through the increasing number of charities across the nation. Giving to a good cause becomes increasingly difficult when times are tough, considering those who have the least give the most. Statistics show that people with lower income give more of it to charity than those who make the big bucks, while themselves be in more danger of losing their own support.

With more people having to rely on charities for their essential needs due to economical hardship, organizations struggling for donations, and despite less money accessible to charities as a result of the worldwide economic crisis, it appears that the number of good causes one may chose to donate to is vastly increasing, stretching the support even thinner. Last weekend alone we counted an even dozen of charity rides and poker runs in the Phoenix metro area alone, all benefiting a good cause from national organization to single individuals.

One of these was Rip’s B.A.D. Ride, a charity that began in Southern California and was conceived by the late Easyriders magazine columnist and photojournalist Rip, whose words and photos appeared in Rip?s Run column for over twelve years. Rip lived with Type 2 diabetes for more than 10 years, and passed away Feb 18, 2000. Rip brought the idea of a fundraising motorcycle ride to the American Diabetes Association more than thirteen years ago and continued to be an integral part of the planning of the Southern California ride, up until his passing.

An estimated 1,700 bikers from across the state of Arizona rode from four start locations across Arizona (Chester?s Harley-Davidson, Chandler Harley-Davidson, Arrowhead Harley-Davidson and Harley-Davidson of Tucson) to the Pinal County Fair Grounds to raise money for the Rip?s B.A.D. Ride V. The event featured over 40 vendor booths, a bike show, bike games, and a live concert from Mogollon and Wooden Nickel. The event was emceed by Ruby Cheeks & Steve King of local radio station 93.3 KDKB and included a special presentation from the Arizona ADA Youth Council.

Early estimates show participants as having raised nearly $100,000 in support of the important research, information and advocacy efforts of the American Diabetes Association.

The Arizona edition of Rip’s B.A.D. Ride has managed to establish a solid base of donors over the past four years, along with a strong following of riders in the state. To some extend, this year’s event also benefited from the cancellation of the Love Ride with some participants canceling their plans of making the trip to California and attending the ride in Arizona instead. Raising money these days is more challenging than it used to be.

Guys from Rip’s B.A.D. Ride asked us whether we could mention that they are still accepting donations, and we will be more than happy to do so. If you would like to donate, you may do so by visiting their website at www.ripsbadride.com, or by sending a check to the office of the American Diabetes Association, 333 W fort Lowell Road, Suite 123, Tucson, AZ 85705.

See you next year at Rip’s B.A.D. Ride VI, date to be announced.

British Invasion, now daily in Las Vegas–Another British invasion touched down in Las Vegas last Sunday with the arrival of the inaugural flight for British Airways. The new daily, non-stop service is from London?s Heathrow Airport to McCarran International Airport in Las Vegas.

?This new partnership provides more access for the world to experience Las Vegas? said Mayor Oscar B. Goodman, chairman of the board of directors for the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority (LVCVA). ?The strength of the two brands makes it an ideal partnership. The investment by British Airways to incorporate Las Vegas into their strategic business plan during a global recession demonstrates the strength of our brand.”

?The arrival of a new international carrier with an expansive network that feeds into Heathrow will only enhance travelers? ability to reach Las Vegas from various points in Europe and beyond,? said Randall H. Walker, Director of Aviation for Clark County, Nevada. ?We?re constantly striving to make it easier for travelers to come to McCarran International, and we are very pleased to welcome British Airways to this airport.?

When you are not planning a trip to London, you probably don’t give a hoot, and these guys only did it because they wanted to pose with the dancers anyway. But if you actually plan a trip to Europe, don’t say we didn’t tell you how to get there.

BIKERNET READER HAS QUESTION ABOUT ADAPTIVE MOTORCYCLES– I would like to ask few questions regarding adaptive motorcycles, my fiance’ who is paraplegic is interested in getting a motorcycle and working on adjusting it to fit him. We are new to the whole motorcycle industry and would like to see models, or how these things work, what is needed and where to start.

We are located in Los Angeles. So if there is anything close or around this area. If you can help us with any of this information or point us where to start we would really appreciate it.

BIKERNET UNIVERSITY ENGLISH CLASS WORD OF THE DAY–raffish RAF-ish, adjective:
1. Characterized by or suggestive of flashy vulgarity, crudeness, or rowdiness; tawdry.
2. Marked by a carefree unconventionality or disreputableness; rakish.

The speaker was in his forties, an attractive-looking man with a black eye patch that gave him the raffish look of an amiable pirate.— Sidney Sheldon, The Best Laid Plans

Sometimes we would go to the Gargoyle Club, . . . but it was too full of raffish upper-class drunks for my taste.
— John Richardson, The Sorcerers Apprentice

Raffish derives from the noun raff (chiefly used in the compound or duplicate, riffraff), meaning people of a low reputation.

SAXON MOTORCYCLES ON THE MOVE–We already told you that Saxon Motorcycles is moving full throttle as far as business is concerned, representing their product from local to international shows, building new bikes and conquering the Canadian and European markets. In the near future of the Saxons is also the physical move of the manufacture to a new facility. While this will be in no way as challenging as the migration of part of the germanic Saxon tribe from the European mainland along the North Sea to England in the 5th century, relocating a complete motorcycle manufacturer is no walk in the park either. Management has told us they will try hard to keep downtime at an absolute minimum.

Currently located in Casa Grande, Arizona, Saxon will be moving to a new facility about 50 miles north in Chandler, Arizona. Reasons cited for the move are a better infrastructure in the area and easier for customers to reach. The new facility will also better accommodate current needs and future growth of Saxon.

Final touches are put to the new facility as of this writing, and the move is planned for next month. Along with production and administration, the new building will also provide a point to turn to for customers. Keep it on BIKERNET.COM for the latest on the Saxon migration…

ANOTHER VOTE FOR BETSY–Bandit?I have had the privilege of calling Betsy Huelskamp a friend for a number of years. She is inspirational?she is a wonderful story teller…and her passion for life is contagious. Her first story of Sturgis 2009 is a great read?but I have come to expect that excellence from her. But I am not in the motorcycle community?though at 63 she may one day get me on a hog?but that?s for another time. I?m really happy she is being recognized for her extraordinary writing skills and you had the wisdom to include this phenomenal lady as part of your site.

While I know Betsy has used Calamity in her email address for as long as I have known her, there may be some that don?t know that?including her name in the byline would help others (like me) find her on your site.

BIKERNET METRIC TO FOLLOW BUILD–I pick up a 75 Honda cb360 to build into a cafe racer. This thing will run up to about 90mph, and that’s with me riding it. I weigh 200lbs. Made it a kick only. I have started shaving off all the mounts not being used. I made the tail with 3/8″ round stock and 16ga. steel bent over my knee. Seat pan is 16ga. steel, foamed, and ready to be covered.

Bought some bars off ebay. Threw away the front brake. Started polishing the parts, and they look brand new again. I moved the battery to the front of the swingarm for a cleaner look. I will install the electrics in the tail of the bike.

Going to paint it gloss black, krinkle coat the engine black, and clean up the carbs. So far, I got $300 into it, including the purchase of the bike. I am doing this to prove you can build a show quality bike for under $500 bones.

BIKERNET DARWIN AWARDS SPONSORED BY CRAZYHORSE ENGINES–Semifinalist #3: A 22-year-old Reston ,VA, man was found dead after he tried to use octopus straps to bungee jump off a 70-foot rail road trestle. Fairfax County police said Eric Barcia, a fast food worker, taped a bunch of these straps together, wrapped an end around one foot, anchored the other end to the trestle at Lake Accotink Park, jumped and hit the pavement.

Warren Carmichael, a police spokesman, said investigators think Barcia was alone because his car was found nearby. ‘The length of the cord that he had assembled was greater than the distance between the trestle and the ground,’ Carmichael said. Police say the apparent cause of death was ‘Major trauma.’

CALIFORNIA MOTORCYCLE FATALITIES DROP–According to figures recently released by the California Office of Traffic Safety, motorcycle fatalities in California have declined for the first six months of 2009, reversing a troubling 11-year trend. From January through June of 2009, 198 people were killed in motorcycle related crashes, compared to 264 for the same period in 2008, according to preliminary figures supplied by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. After seeing increases averaging 10 percent per year since the low point of 204 fatalities in 1998, this signals a decline of 25 percent. While overall traffic fatalities dropped nearly 21 percent in the last three years in California, motorcycle fatalities for that same period increased over 19 percent.

“We are very heartened by these numbers,” said Christopher J. Murphy, Director of the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS). “If they continue, it means more motorcycle riders are getting home alive, which is what we have been working for.”

“We have really been working at encouraging riders to get training through the California Motorcyclist Safety Training Program (CMSP), no matter what their age or experience,” said Joe Farrow, California Highway Patrol Commissioner. “Our efforts are paying off as 2008 saw the most students trained in any year since the beginning of the CMSP.”

Research undertaken to help stem the previously increasing rise in fatalities showed that 37 percent of riders killed were not properly licensed for motorcycles. Additionally, 70 percent of fatal crashes involving motorcycles were found to be the fault of the motorcycle operator. Particularly of interest is that while the fast accelerating ‘Super Sport’ type motorcycle favored by younger males constitute only 14 percent of registered motorcycles, they account for 38 percent of motorcyclists killed.

Whatever you think about statistics and their interpretation: stay safe out there!

– C.S. Berg

Yeah right. No mention of how many were hit by motorists or distracted drivers. Usually about 70 percent of accidents are caused by left turners, or folks pulling in front of bikers. Keep your eyes peeled.–Renegade

LEE PARKS JELLO SHOTS TRAINING FOR CYCLE WORLD 2010 INTERNATIONAL SHOWS–After a brief rest after training 400 marines last month, we’re getting ready for the upcoming Cycle World International Motorcycle Shows. I’ll be personally delivering one or two 30-minute riding skill seminars each day of every show. If you’ve already taken a Total Control ARC or IRC, this is a good opportunity for a refresher. If you haven’t had the pleasure of participating in a clinic yet, now is your chance to get a free look at what all the excitement is about.

Due to popular demand, we now have an online forum for Total Control called, appropriately enough, www.totalcontrolforums.com. If you’d like to read or post a comment, check it out and let the TC community know about your experience.

I’m also proud to announce that we have new locations for Total Control in Florida, Missouri, New Orleans and England! Check out the schedule below or keep an eye on www.totalcontroltraining.net. The St. Louis dates are the last classes that I will be personally teaching this year, so if you’re on the fence, it’s time to get off.

On the product front, we are now offering our Total Control Strap-Ons for sale to the public. These are the same units used by our students in our ARCs and are a great way to temporarily add knee sliders to any pants.

MEES CROWNED GRAND NATIONAL TWINS CHAMPION AT POMONA–Coolbeth, Back From Injury, is Second in Race and Championship.

POMONA, Calif. (Sept. 24, 2009) – Blue Springs Harley-Davidson/Screamin’ Eagle rider Jared Mees secured his first AMA Grand National Twins championship by placing fifth in the final race of the season on the 5/8-mile dirt oval at the Pomona Fairplex. K&K Motorcycle Supply rider Henry Wiles won the race on a Harley-Davidson XR-750.

?Winning the championship is a dream come true for me,? said Mees. ?I want to thank Harley-Davidson for its continued support of our team and of flat track racing. The Blue Springs team put me on almost flawless equipment. I think we had only one mechanical problem all season, which allowed us to stay consistent, and that was a key this year with only nine races on the schedule. You had to stay on top of your game at every race.?

Mees had to transfer from a semi-final heat after he placed fifth in the third heat race. But once in the main, the 23-year-old rider from Clio, Mich., only needed to place eighth or better to hold his points lead over the two other racers still in realistic contention for the championship, Moroney?s Harley-Davidson/Screamin’ Eagle rider Bryan Smith and three-time defending champion, Harley-Davidson Screamin’ Eagle factory rider Kenny Coolbeth.

Smith led early in the race but dropped out on lap 10 with a mechanical failure. Coolbeth finished second, 2.9 seconds behind Wiles. The win was the first for Wiles as a Grand National Twins rider. Halbert Family/King Kustoms rider Sammy Halbert finished third on a Harley-Davidson XR-750.

?I just couldn?t get the motorcycle working right in the first heat,? said Mees. ?We adjusted the suspension and then I felt great in the semi. I think if we were starting on the first row for the main I had a chance to run up front, but once I saw Smith drop out I knew I didn?t have to kill myself, just bring it home for the championship.?

Mees, a member of the Harley-Davidson Wrecking Crew, becomes the first champion in the long history of the Grand National series to claim the title without winning a race during the season. Mees finished second three times and was third twice, and never finished worse than eighth place in nine Twins events. Mees has won six Grand National Twins races since he was named the Ricky Graham Rookie of the Year following the 2004 season. Mees finished second in the Grand National Twins championship standings to Coolbeth in 2006 and 2007.

?It feels good to win a title at such a young age,? said Mees. ?My heart is in dirt track racing, and I plan on riding hard for a while.?

Coolbeth saw his opportunity to win a fourth-consecutive Grand National Twins championship diminish when he was injured in a training accident prior to the Labor Day weekend race at the Springfield Mile on the Illinois State Fairgrounds. A broken shoulder kept Coolbeth, who was leading the series in points following a win at Indianapolis, from racing that weekend. Mees finished second at Springfield and opened a 15-point lead on Coolbeth with just the final race at Pomona left on the schedule.

Smith, another member of the Harley-Davidson Wrecking Crew, finished the season in fourth place and had a race win at Lima, Ohio. Wrecking Crew rider Joe Kopp, aboard the Latus Harley-Davidson/Screamin? Eagle XR-750, finished fifth in points with a win on the Beulah Park Mile at Grove City, Ohio.

Mees wrapped up the 2009 AMA Grand National Twins season with 142 points and a nine-point lead over Coolbeth, who earned 133 points. Halbert finished third with 125 points. Smith was fourth with 119 points, followed by Kopp with 117 points.

The Screamin’ Eagle Flat Track team is sponsored by Matco Tools.

Happy Halloween everyone! Just a quick reminder FROM IRON WORKS MAGAZINE– Available now on newstands is the December 2009 issue of IronWorks Magazine. In it you’ll find the opening feature article on Paul Holdsworth’s FXRT. There will be additional articles over the next 3 issues detailing the complete rebuild of Paul’s bike with the final installment highlighting the work performed by DOUGZ. We are proud to have been part of this great project and look forward to seeing the finished product in print as well as in person!

Paul tells me the paint portion will be covered in the April issue where I highlight the products and tools we use to produce our award winning paint jobs. With the help of our local paint supplier Body Shop Supply, we approached a couple of companies who we felt would be interested in taking part in this project. Akzo-Nobel / Sikkens donated product when we told them about it as did SATA Paint Equipment and we’re all anxiously looking forward to seeing the article.

A little background info on Paul Holdsworth – the ‘Meddling Editor’ of IronWorks whom I’ve known for a few years. He calls Chicago home and is absolutely entertaining to talk to if you ever get the chance, as he has a vast knowledge of all brands of bikes (he’s quite fond of Vincents I hear). He can easily spend hours telling you of his experiences, both in the saddle and in mud pits on the side of the road after being ejected from the saddle. Simply put – you just can’t help but like the guy!

Look for the opening article titled ‘Anniversary Party Hangover’ in the December issue. Feel free to share this with every single person you see today because its just the right thing to do.

he lost his camera

He Lost His Camera, But He Found America– Rome, Georgia. Some know him as an amateur road racer who won the first race in which he has ever competed, some know him as Angels & Airwaves guitarist David Kennedy. This racer and rocker was rider this summer, setting aside his Pirelli Diablo shod Kawasaki ZX-10R and taking to the highways of America on his Harley-Davidson, fitted with Pirelli Night Dragons, riding side-by-side with his father, Jim, looking for America.

Kennedy Said, ?The project we?re working on has a lot to do with motorcycle culture. We looked at the 1970?s biker thing and wondered what it would be like made modern, what would they do in 2020? We pay homage to the era of the adventure of the open road. To Captain America. So I took this ride with that in mind.

?Riding from San Diego to Illinois we visited family, stayed off Interstates. On tour I travel so much in the bus and rarely know where we are. On the bike things seem closer somehow. On the bus I feel far from home, but on the bike it was all connected. On a bike, with a few hundred dollars, you can go anywhere, you can ride until you feel sufficiently lost, you can get disconnected.

I?d wanted to go to Mount Rushmore by bike ever since ?98, when we stopped there on the first tour I did in the USA with a band. It was during Sturgis, and we were supposed to play. We showed up and found out we?d been cancelled. The promoter was nowhere to be found, every hotel was filled, so we kept going. We stopped to see Mount Rushmore at 6:30 in the morning. Seeing it on this trip was different, thankfully it was still there. The way I got there this time was way cooler, this was more about the journey than being there.

?We also went to Crazy Horse. It was 36 degrees, raining, foggy, icy. I duct-taped my hands to keep them warmer. It helped. I was unprepared for how much weather there is outside of Southern California. There was lots of rain, but it was cool to see the storms in the distance. I love being out there in it on a bike. There are so many changes. I love riding at dusk, the light is perfect, you feel really small, which is great because being personally so tall I always feel really big. On the road through the Western states all problems become small.?

Prior to leaving on this trip, Kennedy fitted a set of Pirelli Night Dragon performance tires on his 1996 H-D Dyna Superglide. About that Kennedy said, in a nearly embarrassingly enthusiastic over-the-top testimonial,? It was nice to slow things down from my track riding experiences. I hadn?t been on an H-D since high school. At first the bike felt lose, the tires felt skinny and detached. The front would shimmy. The new Pirelli?s transformed the bike. They solved every problem. I couldn?t believe it. It really feels almost like a sport bike now. It?s hard to think of any other modification that simple and with that kind of change. And, after the trip the tires still look nearly new. You know, it took like five minutes to get the tires on the bike and it just felt so good I could rail on the bike. The tires made the trip. I would have had so much more to deal with without them. I thought about that a couple times a day. I used to have to attack crossing lines on the freeway, but on these you don?t care. It was like I had bought a new bike.?

Despite the Night Dragon tires, Kennedy lost his camera and is left with his memories and a few cell phone images, like as the one attached.

Angels & Airwaves has a new album scheduled for release shortly after the New Year, and will be on tour to promote their new music as soon as a schedule can be set in place. Kennedy and drummer Atom Willard have been known to bring their bikes with them on tour, so watch for them in your town.

Pirelli Tire North America designs, develops, manufactures, and markets tires for passenger vehicles in both the original equipment and replacement markets, as well as marketing tires for motorcycles and race cars. 3 Steps to Healthy Joints–Being active is part of an optimal lifestyle, and there are simple steps you can take to help protect your joints from the normal wear and tear of everyday activities. In addition to following an anti-inflammatory diet and prudent supplementation, consider these simple strategies:

1. Maintain a healthy weight. Losing just a few pounds can alleviate excess mechanical stress on joints

2. Avoid intense activities that can injure or strain the joint cartilage.

3. Get exercise. Performed at a level that does not stress joints, exercise is the key to maintaining lifelong mobility- it strengthens surrounding muscles that support and protect joints. Swimming, stationary cycling and light weight training are good choices, as are stretching and balance exercises such as yoga and T’ai chi.

RECYCLED TIRES ON THE WAY–It is truly amazing what all you can recycle these days, now the recycled tire is coming. Well, it is still a long way off, actually, but they are working on transforming the huge piles of used-up rubber into new tires by grinding down the old ones and using the material in compounds for new ones.

Magnum D’Or Resources, Inc. states, “As part of our ongoing development work on improving the range of applicability of Magnum SRI custom compounds, the company recently produced motorcycle tires utilizing in excess of 20% Magnum SRI custom compound consisting of at least 16% recycled material. These particular tires were designed for 70cc to 110cc motorcycles. All indications have been very positive regarding the test results of the final product.?

The development of this motorcycle tire was mostly overshadowed by the simultaneously developed and tested light truck tire, the company with a subsidiary in Hudson, Colorado, is also working on for predominantly the Asian market. While official road tests are underway for the light truck tires at the Rubber Research Institute Tire lab, similar trials are being carried out on the motorcycle tires concurrently.

Recycled_Tires_1

Magnum/SRI are using their technologies to produce next generation rubber recycling solutions for custom compounds, retread compounds, processing aids, advanced state-of-the-art equipment, and reactivated ambient/cryogenic rubber powders for the global market.

While the guys in Asia may soon be zooming around with recycled tires on their small displacement rides, it will be some time until we see the first 300 rear tire with recycled rubber on a custom chop. Should be interesting to see whether that changes the cost for the rubbers some time down the road.

– C.S. Berg

We have a friend in Australia who recycles used tires and produces pure diesel fuel. Ray Russell owns the technology to turn old tires into sulphur free fuel. Recently he’s developed a water filtration system that immediately turns gray water into drinkable water. He’s currently in China demonstrating his device to a country rapidly running low on quality water resources. Congrats, Ray.–Bandit

BIKERNET CHANGES FOR 2010–It’s interesting how stars align, the tea leaves filter to the bottom of the cup and somebody turns over a tarot card and life changes. Over the last couple of months, various elements have crept into place and formed a guiding light for the future of Bikernet. I won’t go into each and every road sign but touch on a couple. We now have an advertising director, C.S. Berg in Arizona added a new substantial editorial connection, Bikernet Betsy rolled her long rusty Softail into the Bikernet Garage, and our long time web master Jason Douglas is retiring. In addition Scout, formerly from Baker and now working with H-D has thrown in his two cents. Another web designer Trent Reker, has offered to help.

In addition Genevieve Schmitt, who is the publisher of Women Riders Now.com has stumbled through many of the same technological woes we have. She continues to be a formidable source of positive guidance. The technology is daunting but the goals are simple, we want to improve Bikernet, make it more user friendly, easier to navigate and improve access. Plus, we want Bikernet to do a helluva job for our sponsors. But I promise not to fuck with the overall style of Bikernet. The articles will remain clean, easy to read and uncluttered with bullshit. We’ll just make it easier to find each department and article. In addition we will add a couple of services, including Insurance contacts, with the help of Biker Marc. Daytona Survival Guide

girl sitting on bike

Have you ever leaned against a bar during a major event? The ride's one thing, the event another. I bellied up to a local bar and spoke to a veteran Florida resident and Daytona correspondent, Rogue, for Bike Week advice. He rode to Daytona in the '70's snorted angel dust and never left.

full moon saloon

“Bike Week is officially the first full week in March,” Rogue said. “Over the years it has grown to ten days, including two weekends. Most of the country endures frigid weather during February and March making Florida a warm oasis on the coast of the Atlantic. Downright hot some years.” He shoved a thick Boothill shot glass my way and a fifth of Jack.

“Wait just a goddamn minute Rogue reporter from the sand,” I spat. “Isn't Daytona for 2004 scheduled to hit the sand from February 27 until March 7?”

From my standpoint Daytona is an urban area of 64,000 and not prone to picturesque rides. It's a city. But who cares, there's races, girls, bike shows, bikinis, antique bike auctions, babes, grand openings, women and every bike related vendor mentioned in this magazine showing off their new wares.

There are adventuresome riding events available to the north through parks and along the coast, or south in the direction of Orlando to Titusville for air-boat rides past alligators snarling along the water's edge. Farther south there's the Florida Keys and one of the most fantastic waterside runs on earth.

cutie riding

Rogue ignored my date complaint and poored another shot. “The two complaints rattled most are the gouging prices and the over zealous law enforcement during bike week,” Rogue said, “but there's a way around high price tags.”

“As the event continues to grow it spreads to surrounding areas,” Rogue explained pushing the bottle across the table towards me. “This gives riders additional options for places to stay and things to do. Bike Week activities and businesses catering to bikers roam from St. Augustine to Cocco Beach on the East coast and to Orlando, on the West, to form the Bike Week triangle. With careful planning riders have a great time and save.”

“Chances are you will never go in the ocean,” Rogue commented taking the half empty fifth back. “The salt spray plays hell with chrome and paint. Traffic jams and cops, who are over-worked, flourish on the peninsula. Also, everything is over priced. Ya can't miss Main Street and A1A, but be careful. Plan to spend at least one day where it all began, downtown. Experience the Boothill Saloon, Froggies and the vendors who scored property on Main.”

cutie metal top

If you have a Harley and need parts see Two Wheelers, and tell 'em that bastard Bandit sent ya. For new stuff see Daytona Harley on Beach street and Harley Heaven for Demo Rides near the racetrack. More and more activities are forming inland since Bruce Rossmeyer refurbished Daytona Harley-Davidson. Just down the street there's Carl's speed shop, Arlen Ness has a shop and there's more bike related businesses. Staying on the mainland side of the inland waterway prevents traffic snarls and run-ins with cops. I downed another shot.

“Planning is the key,” Rogue pointed out. “There are plenty of Hotels, Motels and Campgrounds but they fill up fast and bank on reservations from the previous year. Use your computer to find a place, and check with the Chamber of Commerce (http://www.daytonachamber.com).”

Keep an eye on your bike. That's the code, although brotherhood flows bountifully, there are crime syndicates on hand to steal motorcycles. There were plenty stolen last year. Don't let that bike out of your site and when you do, chain it down.

“Partying is every where,” Rogue pointed out slugging Jack from the bottle, “but if you have 'too much fun' you could join the, 'Come To Florida On Vacation, Leave On Probation Club'.” Don't ruin your trip.Watch your speed, especially on A1A and beachside. If you get stopped don't Argue. You'll go to jail. You can always fight the ticket later.”

guitar sissy bar

“Wheelies, Burn Outs and Endos are a guaranteed bust, because of the threat to citizens,” Rogue kicked in again. “There are plenty of Bars with burn out pits. Showing body parts can also get you busted, and if you're boisterously encouraging the girls, you can be arrested for solicitation. If you roll outside of Daytona Beach there are unrestricted bergs and bars.”

I snatched the bottle back and filled my glass. Don't Touch Bikes Babes and Beer. If it ain't yours don't handle it. “Chances are you will be touched back and won't enjoy it,” Rogue added. “Don't give security guys a hard time, either. They're doing their job and don't like stupid shit.”

nice ass

“As much as I like the Broken Spoke, Iron Horse, and Jackson Hole Saloon on Ormond Strip, I avoid it,” Rogue slurred. “The cops there have a zero tolerance for anything. We joke that they just pick an arbitrary bike to stop.

“It's like gambling. If you feel lucky or want a ticket to hang on the wall, this is the place to get one.”

“Wait a minute,” I snapped at Rogue. “No negative waves.”

“Lock your bike and remember to unlock it before you leave,” Rogue cut in and pushed the fifth of Jack Daniels toward me. “Pay attention to the sandy roads. After rains the roads are slick, and it rains often.”

The shots were flowing and our voices muddled to a blur. We started to tell wild stories of sex and sin, so I'll let you experience Daytona on your own. You'll return, hopefully, with a handful of wild tales to tell over margaritas with your pals.

If you experience an award winning story, send it to Bandit@bikernet.com.

The bastard will read it, and perhaps post it for the world to see.–Renegade

DAYTONA UPDATES FROM ROGUE

Daytona Daily Beach Pass Fees Jump

Volusia County's Beach Advisory Board will consider recommendations next week to change the rates beach-goers pay for parking. Listed below are some key numbers among the recommendations, which will ultimately be forwarded to the County Council.

$10 – Daily amount nonresidents would pay to park on the beach, up from $5. Residents would continue to pay $5.

$50 – Cost of an annual pass for nonresidents, up from $40. Residents would continue to pay $20.

$3-$5 – Estimated cost for anyone to use off-beach parking, which is now free. Source: Volusia County.

Source: Volusia County.

The Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University student surfs at the county park almost every day. Parking is free, so it doesn't bother him to just drive away when the waves are flat.

But Rault's free ride may soon be over.

An advisory board is recommending that Volusia County charge $3 to $5 a day for off-beach parking at beachfront parks. The fee, which would apply to residents and tourists, is one of several recommendations that Beach Policy Advisory Board Chairman Glenn Storch plans to bring before the County Council on Jan. 22.

Money collected from off-beach parking would be dedicated to providing more off-beach parking, beachfront parks and restrooms, Storch said.

Among the other recommendations:

· Doubling the non-resident daily pass fee to $10;
· Increasing non-resident season pass to $50, up from $40;
· Preserving the tradition of beach driving, which is now permitted on 15 of the county's 47 miles of beach.

By CINDI BROWNFIELD and JAMES MILLER, Daytona News Journal

The tourist season is about to start in Daytona Beach with Nascar and of course Bike Week. Visitors should expect to spend more for every thing in the area. Bikers Plan ahead. Watch for reports on Bikernet.

Showcase of Kustoms & Motorama?A Car Show for a Kustom World!?–September 24-25-26, 2010
Long Beach Arena & Marina Green Park-Rainbow Lagoon
Showcase of Kustoms & Motorama is a modern indoor/outdoor car show steeped in tradition! The first to be back in the Long Beach Arena in 30 yrs. it pays tribute to the importance of the Renegade Knights Long Beach Car Club formed in 1941 in Long Beach as well as local ?Kustom Painter Extraordinaire? Larry Watson; without him, kustoms wouldn?t have looked the same. Across the Arena floor, the ALL Kustoms indoor portion will be spatially laid out for 360 degree viewing of these ?One of a Kind? dreams.

On display in the lobby will be Larry Watson?s 1958 Thunderbird that changed it all and is considered to be one of the top 10 Kustoms, which we currently own. This car debuted in the Long Beach Auditorium 51 years ago at the 5 day long Renegades Rod & Custom Motorama; it will re-debuted at our 2010 show in its full restoration form. Along side this display we have some of the Renegade Knights C/C memorabilia, also inside the lobby you?ll meet our ?Master of the Kustom? inductees Frank DeRosa Sr. and Dean Jefferies, both long standing legends of the Kustom car world, and this years ?Kustom Innovator of the Year? goes to Marcos Garcia of Lucky 7 Customs, all will have cars on display.

Just outside the lobby; the ?Horsepower Corral?, this is where Traditional Hot Rods and those wanting their Kustom under the sun will get viewed and judged. With 18+ acres of grass in Rainbow Lagoon & Marina Green Park for the outdoor portion of the Motorama, it takes on a campy feel along the Coast of Southern California, with sail boats and the Historic Queen Mary as our back drop.

For the builder that goes the extra mile in creating their dream kustom, we have created the first ?perpetual? trophy to be released in 45 yrs. ?America?s Kustom D?Elegance? Award. With its $10,000 in cash and the ?Lady of Glass? sculpture, it?s the cats? meow of payoffs! Also the winning car gets pictured on the base of the 10? trophy that holds 60 yrs. of winners!

For the more subdued builder; we offer ?Americas Kustom Extraordinaire? Award with a $5000 pay day and an award being made of Purple Heart wood and large casted Kustom car topper, this award embodies the love of the Kustom. During awards ceremony ?Classic Trophy Queens? will be on hand as our ?Presenting Ambassadors?.

The show enjoys rich car club support that includes: Renegade Knights of Long Beach, LA Roadsters, Satans Angels (Nor-Cal), Cavaliers, Sultans, Dead Sleds, Shredders, Beatniks, Them!, Corsairs, Poor Boys (Nor-Cal), West Coast Kustoms, Choppers Burbank, MoFos, Autoholics, Scrapers, Panel Beaters and many-many more. For the out of town wives there will be shuttles to take them on shopping expeditions to Long Beach?s many shopping districts Belmont Shore-4th St. Vintage row.

The Showcase of Kustoms web sites will link and drive traffic to both http://www.longbeachthingstodo.com, and http://www.visitlongbeach.com/attractions to educate our customer on the many activities within the city.

For Friday night entertainment and a great way to kick off the ?Motorama Weekend? we have, ?Parade of Cars?, a six lane wide, 1.5 mile unobstructed corridor for 3 hrs down Shoreline Drive in front of the LB Arena and grass areas. The parade would be open to all Pre-1969 vehicles, which have been pre-registered. The parade would be FREE to the public and being allowed to have lawn chairs on both sides of Shoreline Dr for viewing the ?Parade of Cars?.THE WEB SITES:

FINDINGS FROM THE UNCLE MONKEY DOCTRINE–Hey are you gonna finish that? As motorcycle riders we are forever tinkering with our bikes. (Yes, I hear you Goldwing and BMW riders – fix what? but I go on) Even perfectly running machines are not immune to our natural curious tendency to disassemble and reassemble, and reassemble, and reassemble until we get it right. Plugs and wires, chrome do-dads, ape hangers and new controls. Nothing is off limits or beyond our meager mechanical skill level.

For us there is nothing better then finding an old bike, used and neglected, left for worse somewhere in the dark corners of a shed or barn. We salivate at the thought of breathing life back into the deceased. We are gluttons for punishment. Old BSA, Nortons, and Tiumphs finicky from the factory but we are going to be the ones to finally solve all their electrical woes. Along the way we find long raked out Jap choppers with thick layers of primitive bondo slathered over questionable welds, flaking chrome and tattered seats. Those of us that are especially lucky find the rarest of gems: Indians, Harleys or any number of the early V-twins that have faded into the distant memories and history books.

We load them up, vowing to be the ones to resurrect them. We tells our significant others of the potential, of the opportunities that the bike will bring. Lying that it is as simply as new plugs, soaking down the cylinders and swelling the seals and gaskets to breathe life back into the beasts. Back in our own garages is when the sad reality creeps out from the dark corners of the garage. These bikes were parked for a reason; burnt valves, worn rings, stripped teeth in the gearbox. We labour and toil as we hunt the swap meets scouring through every dirt and grease cover box in a vane attempt to find the impossible. We join online support groups; like minded individuals who have contracted the same affliction.

Slowly over the years the parts trickle in. A cylinder here, a valve spring there. Some from over seas, some forged by a blacksmith living in a small town in the middle of nowhere. It can be truly discouraging. Often these bikes become charity cases. Moving from one owner to the next. A collection of boxes and milk crates with no rhyme or reason searching for the own right owner, the one that will finally be the one to sort though the boxes of Sportster, 10 speed bike and lawn mower parts to finally begin putting the motorcycle back together again.

For those of us that are committed eventually one day our pride and joy will emerge from the shadows and softly putter down the streets. Our hearts swell, our own inner motors firing on all cylinders. We have created life and all is good.

BIKERNET MEDICAL CENTER MAJOR PRIORITY, Breast Cancer–We asked Dr.Weil for some Nutrition Tips. He came up with seven:

To support national education during Breast Cancer Awareness Month, October will focus on breast cancer awareness, prevention and treatment.

Diet and nutrition can play a significant role in the chances of developing breast cancer, especially if you have a family history of the disease. The following dietary practices may help to prevent or lessen the risks – I encourage all women to give them a try:

1. Keep your fat content low. Below 25 percent of your daily calories is ideal.
2. Avoid animal fats, polyunsaturated fats (many vegetable oils), and hydrogenated oils (margarines and vegetable shortenings) – all can increase cancer risks.
3. Use healthy fats: monounsaturates such as extra virgin olive oil, freshly ground flaxseed and oily fish such as wild Alaskan salmon and sardines (which are rich in omega-3 fatty acids) may reduce your risk of breast cancer.
4. Include whole soy products in your diet. Soy foods contain many cancer-protective substances, including isoflavones. Try to eat one to two servings of whole soy-based foods a day.
5. Avoid alcohol. Even in modest amounts, alcohol consumption is associated with an increased risk of breast cancer.
6. Minimize your consumption of conventionally raised meat, poultry, eggs, and dairy products. Replace with organic, hormone-free versions and use sparingly.
7. Eat more fruits and vegetables! They contain many different cancer-protective phytonutrients.

POT-SMOKING JUSTICE DEPARTMENT MEMO– WASHINGTON (AP) — Pot-smoking patients or their sanctioned suppliers should not be targeted for federal prosecution in states that allow medical marijuana, prosecutors were told Monday in a new policy memo issued by the Justice Department.

Under the policy spelled out in a three-page legal memo, federal prosecutors are being told it is not a good use of their time to arrest people who use or provide medical marijuana in strict compliance with state law.

The guidelines being issued by the department do, however, make it clear that federal agents will go after people whose marijuana distribution goes beyond what is permitted under state law or use medical marijuana as a cover for other crimes.

The memo advises prosecutors they “should not focus federal resources in your states on individuals whose actions are in clear and unambiguous compliance with existing state laws providing for the medical use of marijuana.”

The new policy is a significant departure from the Bush administration, which insisted it would continue to enforce federal anti-pot laws regardless of state codes.

“It will not be a priority to use federal resources to prosecute patients with serious illnesses or their caregivers who are complying with state laws on medical marijuana, but we will not tolerate drug traffickers who hide behind claims of compliance with state law to mask activities that are clearly illegal,” Attorney General Eric Holder said in a statement.

Fourteen states allow some use of marijuana for medical purposes: Alaska, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont and Washington.

California stands out among those for the widespread presence of dispensaries – businesses that sell marijuana and even advertise their services. Colorado also has several dispensaries, and Rhode Island and New Mexico are in the process of licensing providers, according to the Marijuana Policy Project, a group that promotes the decriminalization of marijuana use.

Holder said in March that he wanted federal law enforcement officials to pursue those who violate both federal and state law, but it has not been clear how that goal would be put into practice.

The memo spelling out the policy was sent Monday to federal prosecutors in the 14 states, and also to top officials at the FBI and Drug Enforcement Administration.

The memo written by Deputy Attorney General David Ogden emphasizes that prosecutors have wide discretion in choosing which cases to pursue, and says it is not a good use of federal manpower to prosecute those who are without a doubt in compliance with state law.

“This is a major step forward,” said Bruce Mirken, communications director for the Marijuana Policy Project. “This change in policy moves the federal government dramatically toward respecting scientific and practical reality.”

At the same time, officials said, the government will still prosecute those who use medical marijuana as a cover for other illegal activity.

In particular, the memo urges prosecutors to pursue marijuana cases which involve violence, the illegal use of firearms, selling pot to minors, money laundering or involvement in other crimes.

I pulled the plugs in the Shovel and they indicated a lean condition. Can’t figure that out. I just richened the mixture. I pulled the mainjet and adjusted the clip. We’ll see?

my bike arrive

Nyla’s Root Beer Float bobber arrived this week from Texas. It was finely built by one of the Texas masters, Kent Weeks, of Lucky Devil Metalworks. We will bring you the final tech in the next couple of weeks and photograph the bike for a magazine feature and a Bikernet feature.

More good news includes tinkering with the 5-Ball racer, we decided the existing cushy seat had to go. The position was too high and too far back. It dawned on me that master leather tooling Australian, Glenn Priddle, gave me a luxurious solo seat tooled with the 10th anniversary Bikernet logo. I gave it a try, and it fit like a glove, two inches lower and 2.5 inches closer to the tank. Amazing. I’m that much closer to a maiden voyage.

RINEHART RACING AND CLEARLINE INDUSTRIES, LLC ENTER INTO MANUFACTURING ARRANGEMENT– ASHEVILLE, NC, October 20, 2009 ? Rinehart Racing has entered into a new state of the art manufacturing arrangement with Clearline Industries, LLC for the manufacturing of its motorcycle performance exhaust product line. While this is the V-Twin industry?s first time seeing the name ?Clearline? associated with the Rinehart line, it is not Clearline?s first experience with Rinehart.

Under Rinehart?s previous manufacturing arrangement, Clearline was responsible for product polishing, finishing and chroming. In addition to Clearline, numerous other suppliers, fabricators and vendors already involved in the manufacturing process will continue to perform their established role under the new arrangement. Vendors new to the Rinehart line are those replacing the portion of fabrication that was previously performed by BUB Enterprises.

?Clearline Industries is honored to be awarded this momentous opportunity with Rinehart Racing and proud to be associated with one of the most renowned names in the exhaust industry,? said James Trotter, Vice President of Business Development with Clearline

With the expiration of their previous manufacturing and distribution arrangement with LeMans Corp., the parent company of Drag Specialties, Rinehart assumes the exclusive management of the exhaust product line, including manufacturing and distribution, product development and customer service initiatives. With this transition, dealers can now purchase complete systems and component parts direct from Rinehart or through its distribution arrangement with Custom Chrome.

?This new chapter in the life of Rinehart Racing brings with it the dawning of a new day. Our company now has the autonomy and freedom to focus on and respond to the needs of the entire industry while concentrating our efforts towards motorcycle enthusiasts across the country. Every plan we make, every goal we set, and every design we introduce is driven by a principled desire for quality and is zealously focused on the consumer,? said Judd Hollifield, CEO of Rinehart. Hollifield went on to say, ?The strategic alliance between these two companies, both of which are corporately committed to innovation, craftsmanship and quality, will capitalize on the balance of imagination, innovation and meticulous engineering. The response will be a foundation for an even more successful future.?

Dealer orders for Rinehart product are currently being accepted and processed by Rinehart and Custom Chrome and shipment and delivery of certain products will begin by the end of October. Shortly thereafter, 2009-2010 applications which include true duals and new 2-1 systems being released.

WASHINGTON UPDATE FROM MRF–Motorcycle Crash Causation Study–It was recently announced, and reported by the Motorcycle Riders Foundation (MRF), that the federal government is proceeding with the motorcycle crash causation study. This is news for a number of reasons, as the study has been on virtual life support for the past few years.

A Quick Background on the Study:

Originally mandated and partially funded by the SAFETEA-LU legislation passed in 2005, the original concept of the study was to mimic the European Motorcycle Accident In-Depth Study (MAIDS), using the same OECD (Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development) methodology that the Europeans used. Utilizing that methodology, the study was supposed to investigate 1200 motorcycle crashes and collect 1500 data points on each crash.

Unfortunately, the funding formula of the bill was changed at the last minute leaving a $3 million dollar shortfall for the study. Then came the realization that the estimated $6 million price tag for the study was significantly lower than real world costs, estimated to more likely be in the $9 million range. The federal government?s share totaled $3 million and the motorcycle industry pledged $3 million, leaving an additional $3 million unfunded. A cry for help went out to the states to help offset the shortfall and a few responded, contributing about $600 thousand.

It seemed that the only way to get this study underway was to reduce the sample pool from 1200 to around 900. However, chopping the sample size by 25% seriously reduces the validity, sturdiness and scientific merit of the study. When the Feds announced that they must reduce the sample size, private support for funding the study fell dramatically. A motorcycle industry insider said it best, ?We (the motorcycle industry) do have $3 million for a good study, but not a dollar for a bad one.?

At a recent quarterly meeting, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) disclosed their only option, besides canceling the study altogether. They have decided to fund the study fully in house, taking the $650 thousand from the states and another $500 grand from the NHTSA coffers. So, what we are left with is a sample size of 300, with a price tag of just over $3 million. It?s disappointing that they have chosen this route. What started off as a possible landmark safety study will now be, without question, scientifically invalid and is not likely to be helpful for the motorcyclists of America.

As always, the MRF will keep you updated on this and all other issues happening in Washington DC.

Harley will start talks to save factory–Posted by Bin Du | 21 October 2009, 7:10 pm
Harley-Davidson Inc, the biggest US motorcycle maker, will start talks in coming weeks with union workers in York, Pennsylvania, to decide the fate of the company?s largest US manufacturing facility.

Harley has a plan that may keep the plant open with the union local acceptance of work-rule changes, said Pat Sweeney, a spokeswoman. The Milwaukee-based motorcycle maker is still pursuing a second option to relocate production to Kentucky, Indiana and Tennessee.

Fundamental change -?We have said from the beginning that our clear preference is to remain in York but only if the company can achieve fundamental change there by changing the labour agreement,? Sweeney said.

The decision will be one of the first major actions taken by Chief Executive Officer Keith Wandell, who took over the post in April. The company is trying to cut costs after posting eight straight declines in quarterly earnings as motorcycle sales shrank in the recession.

Local 175 of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers represents hourly employees at the Pennsylvania plant.

The union didn?t return calls for comment. The plant had 2,400 employees as of May 13.

Harley rose 47 cents, or 2 per cent, to $23.75 (Dh87.25) at 4pm in New York Stock Exchange composite trading on Friday. Shares have risen 40 per cent this year. The York Daily Record reported on the talks.

Girder

HOW TO BUILD A GIRDER FRONT END FROM SCRATCH– Back in the sixties the main bread and butter money for most shops that did big twin bike work was raking necks on factory frames and adding ?slugs? to stock hydraulic forks to make them longer. The more aggressive shops also got into extending old factory Springers by using pieces cut from Ford radius rods. Both radius rods and old Springers were cheap and plentiful. Other shops used to extend old Indian Girders and this eventually became my personal area of expertise.

By the time the mid sixties arrived many shops were already doing custom forks that included radically extended rigid setups, Springers and Girders. Several outfits actually set up businesses specifically dedicated to front ends.

For instance many people today instantly recognize the name of Buchanan?s because of their spoke and wheel services but few remember that they started out as a frame and fork business and in the sixties built custom extended Springers from modified stock forks. There was also A.E.E. Choppers, Ron Finch, Ed Roth, and Dick Allen just to name some of the better-known customizers and makers.

For every legitimate business however there were hundreds of small shops and literally thousands of owners who built their own front ends or modified factory units. It was just something that you did if you wanted to customize your bike. In fact building a set of forks back then was just about as common as bolting on a set of new pipes is today.

We’ve discovered a series of builder series DVDs including one on building Girders. Incredible. They are calledThe Chopper Builders handbook, Builders Seriesby G.W. Weishaupt, ISBN 0-9768243-0-3. You should be able to check these out through any bookstore. Or try www.Chopperhandbook.com .

GELPADS

Comfort-Max Gel PadMore cush for your tush–PITY THE POOR POSTERIOR, ESPECIALLY if it’s plonked down on a stylish but skinny motorcycle seat, as Mr. Rditor Edwards’ ass was asked to do in riding the magazine’s Project 100 Harley-Davidson 2600 miles from California to Milwaukee last summer.

Just before departure, Edwards was handed a pre-production version of the Comfort-Max Gel Pad, a triangular cushion of 3/4-inch-thick Viscoelastic medical-quality gel (think boob-job, only not liquid). “Here, you might want to try this,” the donor said, noting that the Project 100’s fender-hugging slab didn’t exactly look cross-country comfy.

Gelseat

Even before the Arizona border, Edwards was sold on the Comfort-Max. It didn’t turn the “Centennial Super Glide” into an Electra-Glide, granted, but made the 10-hour days in the saddle much more bearable. back home, he contacted parent company AMS to see about getting a production version. the pads come in three sizes-standard (12.5 inches at its widest), large (14 in.) and Jumbo (15.5 in.)-all with a grippy bottom; there’s also an 11-inch-wide rear-seat pad. He ordered the standard, but ponied up an extra $20 for the black sheepskin cover. This adds another 1/4-inch to seat height-for a 1-inch total increase-but is much more liveable in hot weather than the standard vinyl cover. An adjustable nylon strap velcroes to the bottom of the pad to keep it in place–it comes with metal clips that are supposed to fit under the seat pan, but on the Project 100 we did away with the clips and simply looped the strap around the top shock mounts.

Six months after his Milwaukee ride, Edwards, refuses to give up either Project 100 or his Gel Pad. We’d call that the best kind of butt-kissing.

Lane wants sentence cut -Victim’s family could reduce biker’s punishment if given opportunity– Imprisoned celebrity motorcycle builder Billy Lane wants a judge to give his fatal crash victim’s family another chance to say what kind of punishment he should receive, in hopes of getting his six-year sentence reduced.

In a defense motion to reduce a sentence filed in 18th Judicial Circuit Court, attorneys Greg Eisenmenger and Robert Berry said victim Gerald Morelock’s family have remained in touch with Lane in the aftermath of his August sentencing hearing.

During sentencing, the victim’s brother, Byron Morelock, and nephew, Sean Morelock, declined to recommend a punishment. But they told the judge the 56-year-old Sebastian Inlet park ranger loved children, and asked him to impose a sentence that would use Lane’s celebrity status to help save the lives of young people through a foundation they plan to create.

They also said they had built a relationship with Lane, who made a sincere face-to-face apology early in the case. However, Lane’s attorneys said the men have since expressed that “the glare of the media and the large group of people in the courtroom” caused them to be vague about their feelings on a prison sentence.

“They were sufficiently overwhelmed by the experience that they did not fully express their feeling that Mr. Lane would better be able to benefit society if he were not incarcerated,” the defense motion says.

The attorneys want Circuit Judge Robert Burger to give the Morelocks another opportunity to be heard and to cut Lane’s sentence if he sees fit.Reached Monday by phone, Assistant State Attorney Tom Brown said he had not yet seen the motion, but noted that Lane’s sentence is less than the nine years called for by prosecutors and sentencing guidelines.

“The judge took everything into consideration,” Brown said. “I think it’s unlikely that he will change his mind and find that the killing of another does not deserve a prison sentence.”

No hearing on the motion has been set.

Although Part 1051 requires full-useful life testing, EPA will allow half life testing on a case-by-case basis limited to the following conditions: that the vehicle is an engine-tested ATV or OFMC without after treatment (non-catalyst), and that the application uses carry-over data for an existing engine family using current technology.

Applications for certification satisfying these criteria will be considered, effective Model Year 2011, through Model Year 2013. Priority will be given to applications carrying over engine-based test data. Alternative test procedures continue to be available independently of this Guidance under the general provisions of 40 CFR 1065.10 and 40 CFR 1051.501.

POWERSPORTS BUSINESS REPORT ON H-D DEALERSHIP CLOSURES–A key Harley-Davidson issue.A very important V-twin industry topic was raised late last week but really never saw the light of day due to the somber news about Buell. That tremendously important topic: The health of the Harley-Davidson dealer network. Harley-Davidson disclosed publicly for the first time what dealer closures they have had recently and what they expect to see in the next six months.

Truly, it wasn?t as bad as expected with rumors flying around about the number of dealers facing credit challenges.

Harley-Davidson has had four dealerships close in 2009 as well as an additional 10 secondary retail locations. These retail locations are often smaller stores that only carry Harley-Davidson?s parts and accessories, apparel and general merchandise.

The OEM says it expects further dealer losses in the next six months, although not in any large numbers. Harley said approximately 15-30 dealership and secondary retail locations could close in the next six months.

By NEIL PASCALE, EDITOR – POWERSPORTS BUSINESS

Speaking of drama, smoke and mirrors, notice how this was swept under the carpet? I know a lot more stores have shut down in the past 12 months… Long-time dealerships like Roeder’s H-D and Ventura H-D being the tip of the iceberg.

Can’t believe they have the nerve to claim it is only four dealerships so far… the rumors I was hearing was that upwards of 30% of the dealer network might go away. But if Harley says all is well, it must be true!–A.F.

BASSANI BIKERNET POSTER TUBE ARRIVED–I’m so happy that your tube with the poster(s) arrived today. We’re trying to figure out where to hang it. We’ll send a photo or two when it is on our wall.

Regarding your books being translated for the European market, we’re somewhat stuck. The translation is almost finished (Prize Possession), but it seems the publication’s moving into a new building and their preparation of the “Costumbike”-fair in December takes a lot of power and effort when it comes to new projects. But be sure I’m still working on it. I believe in your books and the German biker-literature-market, so we’ll carry on. Finally we’ll make it, I’m sure. If there wasn’t a chance I would’ve told you, believe me. I know that it took about a year now and nobody would like to close this case positively more than me (maybe you, smile). So keep on your great work, I will come along soon with a blast of a custom-bike, shot as soon as we have sunny days. Until then a quick glimpse on a screenshot from one of our videos showing an event. And as we start into the Bodybuilding-Sason now two more pix shownig the bike “Madonna” and the girl “Jule”, a fitness-competitor of Kiel, far northern Germany.

wolf panhead

BOOKS OF THE WEEK FROM WOLFGANG–Panhead Restoration Bible: Among all the older Harley-Davidson models, none holds the allure of the Panhead. The bike some would call the first modern Harley. Well-known author Rick Schunk starts the discussion of Panheads with a brief history lesson, followed by a list of things to look for, and avoid, when shopping for a Panhead.

The next section is dedicated to the bike?s chassis, including the wheels brakes and sheet metal. Like the rest of the book, this part is made up of photo sequences that explain, as only photos can, exactly how to disassemble the chassis, repair the fork, and lace the wire wheels. Paint is a major part of any restoration, Rick shows how to apply a nice paint job, and how to achieve the color and finish that will win approval from the judges.

The engine and transmission are two major components sure to require attention during the restoration or repair of your Panhead. Rick documents the overhaul of both an engine and a transmission with two extensive photo sequences.

Electrical components and wiring are one area that many owners and mechanics may find intimidating. Rick removes the fear factor with abundant photos and diagrams.

While there are other restoration guides, there are no how-to restoration books that provide extensive, start-to-finish photo sequences explaining each major operation necessary to the restoration of a Harley-Davidson Panhead.

wolf airbrush

Or how about an Eye Candy book: How to Airbrush Pinups is a collection of 9 sequences done by well-known and experienced airbrush artists. The individuals included here include Edward Reed, Steve Nunez, Susan Heidi, Liz Austin, and Tom Nguyen. Each photo sequence starts with the artist?s sketch, before moving, step-by-step, to the finished panel.

The human form, the human face and skin tones, are three topics that beginning artists struggle to get right. And it is these three topics that make up much of the discussion in this new book. Each chapter includes a Q&A with the artist. These interviews allow the reader to experience the artist, one-on-one. This is a chance to learn not only which airbrush they artist prefer, but also how they learned their skills, who inspires them and how to avoid the typical mistakes.

The styles seen in How to Airbrush Pinups run the gamut from retro pinup and Vargas-style work of Edward Reed to modern stylized pinups of Tom Nguyen. Each artist adds his or her own spin to the classic female shape, and each explains in both words and photos how to create the allure that makes pin-up art one of the most popular art forms in the world.

Gotta watch out for those distractions.

THE BIKERNET DARWIN AWARDS FINALLY– It’s that time again. The Darwin Awards are finally out, the annual honor given to the persons who did the gene pool the biggest service by killing themselves in the most extraordinarily stupid ways.

Last year’s winner was the fellow who was killed by a Coke machine which toppled over on top of him as he was attempting to tip a free soda out.

This year’s winner was a real rocket scientist — honest!

And the nominees: Semifinalist #1

A young Canadian man, searching for a way of getting drunk cheaply, because he had no money with which to buy alcohol, mixed gasoline with milk. Not surprisingly, this concoction made him ill, and he vomited into the fireplace in his house. This resulting explosion and fire burned his house down, killing both him and his sister.

Who’s the prey?

Woman In Krazy Glue Assault: ‘We Were The Prey’–MILWAUKEE, Wis. (AP)A woman accused of helping lure a boyfriend to a Wisconsin hotel room and gluing his penis to his stomach as punishment for his cheating ways said Tuesday she and the other women went to the motel to tell him “the gig was up.”

Therese Ziemann told NBC’s “Today” show that she and the other three women accused of holding the man against his will in a Stockbridge hotel room near Green Bay did not collaborate, and there was no ringleader among them.

Ziemann said the women were simply victims.”He’s a predator and we’re the prey,” she said.

Prosecutors say the women, including the man’s wife and another girlfriend, lured the man to the motel on July 30 to punish him for cheating.

Court documents say the man agreed to be bound with sheets and blindfolded by Ziemann, and that she used Krazy Glue to attach his penis to his stomach.

Each woman is charged with being party to false imprisonment, a felony. Ziemann is also charged with fourth-degree sexual assault, a misdemeanor.

The Associated Press is not naming the Fond du Lac man to protect his identity as an alleged victim of sexual assault.

INSPIRECOVER

AUSTRALIA?S FIRST INSPIRATIONAL / DOCUNETARY FILM ON CUSTOM BIKE BUILDING US LAUNCH – 1st Oct 2009, Las Vegas Bike Fest– Sydney, Australia, 21/9/2009 – Xplode Films is pleased to announce it?s completion of what is believed to be the first Australian inspirational / documentary film on custom bike building and modified Harleys.

The difference between this film and many other films / DVD?s is that this is 100% the words of the bike builders, and in no way written by anyone else. Best of all, this has been compiled by a small team of passionate bike owners with a result that?s visually appealing and different.

The film titled ?The Inspire DVD – Tales from the Roadside? features interviews with new up and coming Australian bike builders, such as Dylan Robb (now titled ?Grand National Champion?). Danny Pelligrino (Custom Valley Choppers), to professional builders in the USA, with the likes of the ?Count? (Counts Kustoms) builder to the rockstars, Eric & Dave from Tempest thru to the

Legendary Arlen Ness and many more builders. This film was produced to try and motivate all the people out there who are mis-guided, by such so called ?reality? shows and the fear of having to spend $50k+ to have a custom bike. Although the film doesn?t show the ?how-to-build? side of things, it does tap into the mind and the logic of building dream machines. There is a brief look at registering a bike legaly in Australia, what the US builders think of our bikes, and for the budding want to be builder, how to make it survive in Australia.

And as usual, there are plenty of pictures of bikes from shows, such as the ?Artistry in Iron? from the Las Vegas Bike Fest (2008) to some bike shows in Australia and some cool bike museums. The film will be officially released at Las Vegas Bike Fest 2009.

A one of a kind limited edition calendar is also in production, and is tipped to be the most unique bike calendar ever done. With concepts by David Willis and photography by Pedro Virgil. The film has a running time of aprox. 95 min and will retail for US$19.95. A 4 min trailer can be seen on the website. The calendar release date is TBA.

BIKERNET NEWS HUMOR BREAK–Once upon a time in the west, there lived an Indian tribe that revered and worshipped the horse. Whenever the horse herd moved for greener pastures, the tribe packed up and followed. They lived in harmony and all was well in their world.

One year, however, the herd was decimated, and this greatly concerned the tribal elders. This was followed by a total eclipse of the sun, which elicited even more alarm. At the same time, four tribesmen were stricken with chickenpox.

So the tribal elders called a council. After much discussion, all agreed that the eclipse demonstrated that the Great Spirit had turned away from the People in anger, but he had marked those responsible with a sign: the four men with the chickenpox. Because they were to blame for the tribe’s recent troubles, the four were banished from the tribe forever, never to return.

In time and with the tribe’s help, the horse population rebounded, but the tribe continued to be plagued with troubling events: burned-down teepees, theft of food supplies, things of that nature. While they often discovered footprints, they were never able to track down and identify the perpetrators.

The tribal elders met in council again and considered all the events, past and present, along with all the circumstantial evidence.

Ultimately, they concluded that the source of their troubles was the Four Poxmen of the Horse Eclipse.

Leadgirl

Hey,

This is going to be an outstanding news column. All week long we collect related news from all over the planet. Each week it takes on a milieu of characteristics. Usually one bastard sticks out to become the overwhelming Zen vibe for this week. We scramble to bring you anything and everything that’s happening in our industry and related items from outside our galaxy.

As we scramble to put all these elements together, I catch a notion of our economic standing, the level of excitement in the industry, a measure of the entrepreneurial spirit, and our relationship to the authorities and the legislative front.

This week, I’m feeling good. You’ll note a heightened level of product development and bike building spirit. The H-D factory is still grappling with our economy, but they will overcome. As you will see, there’s no end to the new products and hot bikes being build. This coming decade, might be the age of the small business, if the fucking, esurient banks will cough up a few loans. Let’s hit it:

Gary currently rides a 1995 Fat Boy and is looking forward with great expectations in adding this Digger Bobber to his stable. ?I?m getting calls from family and friends saying that they want to help me out by riding the bike for me,? said a laughing Zorn. ?And since this bike represents so much, from supporting the troops to American ingenuity, I will be sharing it with my buddies.?

1,200 bikers pay tribute to camp, Bruce Rossmeyer– EUSTIS — Riding near the front of the pack as 1,200 motorcyclists and passengers roared through DeLand on Sunday, Mandy Rossmeyer Campbell spotted a woman standing near U.S. 92 with a sign bearing Bruce Rossmeyer’s name and an angel’s halo.

“That was special,” Campbell said after arriving at Camp Boggy Creek in Lake County on an emotional ride that paid tribute to Rossmeyer — her father and the late owner of Daytona Harley-Davidson — and raised money for one of his favorite charities.

Rossmeyer died in a motorcycle crash July 30 in Wyoming. Campbell — his oldest daughter — her three sisters and brother took their father’s place in leading Sunday’s 15th annual Daytona Harley-Davidson Ride for Children. Their mother, Sandy, rode in a support vehicle with several of her grandchildren.

The event raises money for Camp Boggy Creek, which has served more than 40,000 children with chronic or life-threatening diseases and their families since it opened 1996. Rossmeyer was one of its founders.

One of the children who has benefited from the camp, Bekka Wood of Port Orange, handed out cold lemonade to the arriving bikers Sunday. She later took to the stage to thank the bikers and the Rossmeyer family for their support of the camp.

Bekka, 14, was diagnosed with leukemia when she was 2 1/2 and underwent 2 1/2 years of chemotherapy. The disease is in remission now, but Bekka still under- goes yearly checkups to make sure it doesn’t reoccur.

She has attended Camp Boggy Creek for a week each of the past eight summers. “It’s just a place you can get away,” she said Sunday in an interview. Her favorite activities include boating, fishing and helping to care for the resident animals such as goats, sheep, bunnies and horses.

Bekka, a Spruce Creek High freshman who has five cats at home, would like to be an animal trainer or work at a zoo or maybe be a fashion designer when she grows up.

Sunday was the first time Bekka has been at the camp when the bikers arrived, but she’s been riding on the back of her grandfather’s motorcycle since she was 3 so she could identify with the riders who roared into Boggy Creek late Sunday morning.

“It’s really fun to ride motorcycles,” Bekka said.

Bikers and passengers who paid between $50 and $200 apiece to participate in the event agreed, saying they were out to have a good time and raise money for a good cause.

And she said beginning with 2010, the event will be renamed the Bruce Rossmeyer Ride for Children.

“That will make him smile up in heaven,” she said.

The Bellevue Avenue shop is where the energetic biker spends most of her time, except when she’s out riding — like during Biketoberfest last week, when she rolled in with her entourage to introduce a designer line of bikes, called “Distinctively Roar,” at the Festival of Speed at the Orlando Ritz-Carlton. Or on Friday when she hosted a “Sisterhood Ride” for many different women riders clubs.

“I want to be the Martha Stewart of the motorcycle industry,” Tolleson said in an interview during Bike Week last March.

And it could happen quicker than she thinks, since a friend nominated her for Martha Stewart’s Dreamers into Doers contest, and she is amazed to have made it through thousands of entries to the top 11. Stewart will pick and announce the winner during a show on Nov. 12, in which Tolleson will appear.

Tolleson has been riding motorcycles for 40 years and was convinced women riders needed their own “stuff.” Research prompted her, along with advice from her business-consultant husband, Rodney, to take a chance on her own shop.

She found Motorcycle Industry Council trade association numbers touting more than 4.3 million women motorcyclists. And a marketing survey from Women Riders Now, an information bureau, indicated a 36 percent jump during the past 10 years. The Minnesota-born Tolleson incorporated Roar in 2005 and began her prowl. She spent more than the first year leveraging credit and studying the market. In 2007, she leased a showroom and work area at 897 Bellevue Ave. and started assembling staff.

Her two daughters, an experienced designer, a leather craftsman and a mechanic are among her motorcycle-customizing crew. And don’t for a moment think Tolleson doesn’t get her hands dirty. She works closely with the team.

First: Gary Lyons of Daytona Beach, whom she had known for 12 years. He once had his own motorcycle business, then was in the business of building houses and later had ABA Door Service. “I shut that down when I came to work for Roar,” said the 65-year-old motorcycle designer. “There’s nothing in the Bible about retiring. I’ve worked my whole life. I wake up in the morning and can’t wait to work on motorcycles. They have to make me go home at night.”

Next: Kevin Steinmann of DeLand. “He’s the project manager — a great mechanic — who was in the military building Blackhawk helicopters. He was working for the Volusia County school system on their computers,” Tolleson said. “But he loves motorcycles.”

Then: Tim Heart, the leather man. “He was working for another operator who closed for health reasons right at the time I was looking for someone,” Tolleson said. She contracts pinstripe artists, air brush artists and hand-art painters for the finish jobs, and the business has two administrative employees.

Much like Martha Stewart, Tolleson, 55, has been developing creative product lines, including an original motorcycle for women, a cosmetic collection for the road and an exclusive fashion line.

Her 36-year-old daughter, Leanne Kaplan, handles merchandising and displays. And Tolleson’s other daughter, Tara Romeo, 33, handles customer service.

“We have developed Windblown, a facial-care and cosmetics road kit, body care and makeup good for wind and sun, that can’t melt or shake apart — and things that aren’t bulky,” Tolleson said. “And they both are helping with our online shopper’s showroom.”

But guys shouldn’t be intimidated. Roar does custom paint, metal polishing and seat work for them, as well. In addition, Roar carries a full line of aftermarket parts, and “if anybody wants his-and-hers, we will work with them on that,” she said.

BIKERNET BIKETOBERFEST ECONOMIC REPORT, Bikers less free-wheeling with spending this time around– ORMOND BEACH — Walking out of a T-shirt vendor’s tent, Kim Brundage digs into the plastic bag in her hand and pulls out an infant-sized jumper emblazoned with a motorcycle logo.

“Isn’t it perfect for Flanna?” the 44-year-old said, showing off the souvenir to her husband, Roger. “She will be able to wear it for a while, she is so tiny.” The Syracuse, N.Y., couple spent the first official day of Biketoberfest 2008 on Thursday doing what a lot of those wandering through Destination Daytona were doing — shopping and browsing among the dozens of businesses at the motorcycle enthusiast’s shopping center.

This year’s souring economy hadn’t changed their spending habits, which Roger, a retired police officer, and his crime analyst wife described as “frugal.”

“We spend most of our money on T-shirts for the grandchildren,” Roger Brundage, 63, said. “That, food and incidentals that catch our eyes.” However, with a budget of only $100 per day — they own and live in a time-shared condominium — the couple aren’t giving the local economy much of a boost. And neither are their Biketoberfest counterparts, at least in the early going this year.

“This is a very slow start,” Paula Palladino, owner of Hawg Tyd Superstore, said of the annual fall motorcycle extravaganza, which many merchants count on for a fiscal jump-start. “I have been doing this 10 years, and this is the slowest I have ever seen.” The Brundages have been coming to Biketoberfest for the past eight years, drawn primarily by the weather and the smaller crowds than Bike Week. Throughout that time, their spending has remained pretty much the same, whether the economy was up or down. “We save for four to six months putting away our nickels and dimes,” Roger said. Their fellow travelers, Mike and Mary Kay Manns, also of Syracuse, keep a tight grip on their wallets as well. But their budget is somewhat more extensive. “We both bring $1,000 in cash,” said Mike Manns, 41, who is also a police officer. “And we usually don’t spend all that.” Manns admits the tanking economy does influence his perception of the world, particularly when it affects the family medical records business. But, at least this year, it hasn’t influenced the couple’s day-to-day Biketoberfest expenditures. He even spent a little time in Daytona Harley-Davidson, sitting on a new bike, contemplating the motorcycle’s $45,000 price tag.

“If the business were not doing well, we would not have taken a vacation,” Manns said. Manns, who credits his wife with the success of their company, isn’t as confident about the future though. Calling the president’s bailout plan a “Band-Aid” that is only helping the major players and not small fry such as himself, Manns believes, “The economy is going to get worse before it gets better.”

“But it will get better,” said his wife, 44. “It always does.” Roger Brundage said while he doesn’t think his retirement income has been greatly affected by the downturn, he isn’t as confident about the stocks he owns.

KEYBOARD SHIPPING ON BOARD WITH BIKERNET–We like to work with quality American companies, so we’re proud to have KeyBoard Shipping as part of the Bikernet team. Here’s the deal:

The Keyboard Corporation has, from its very beginnings in 1978, been a specialized transporter of high value, relatively heavy, and easily blemished products from the manufacturer/distributor to their dealer network.

At the beginning of the new millennium, a chance meeting between the President of Keyboard and an Indian Motorcycle dealer led to the development of a unique delivery system for the Motorcycle Industry. Dennis Robey, Keyboard’s President, listened as the dealer described the difficulties he experienced in getting delivery of motorcycles from Indian’s plant in Gilroy, CA to his dealership in Kentucky. Deliveries often took weeks and when they finally did arrive, the motorcycles often required expensive and time consuming prep work before they could be seen on the showroom floor. Keyboard solved that problem with a new unique shipping container.

Cycle Source Magazine becomes the first US based chopper culture publication to launch dual publishing format!–It’s been nearly 13 years since Cycle Source Magazine published their first issue and the world of technology has entered warp speed since then. Today, in a partnership with www.zinio.com Cycle Source has launched their first digital edition that will publish monthly right along side their printed magazine. Readers can purchase the same $20 subscription for twelve issues now and have a digital edition sent to their computer before the print version even comes off the press.

Additionally each issue will have embedded rich media with streaming videos, photo galleries and live links to all articles and advertisements. By the end of 2009, there will even be an i-Phone app that readers may use to have each issue delivered to their i-Phone device for portability.

So what are the advantages? Well, in short, it makes a two dimensional page into an interactive experience. We believe that through this exciting new technology our readers can get more of a “What it was like”? sense from our articles, get more information from advertisers and editorial subjects from a simple click, and have a faster delivery service than ever before possible with the printed page. In each issue rich media will make videos, photo galleries and additional resources available right on the pages making this more than just a digital page flip application.

So is this the end of the print version? Not at all! Cycle Source Magazine staffers believe that this will only enhance what we do in print as it will eventually remove waste from an antiquated distribution system that does very little to encourage growth of smaller, young titles. “We have long been a fan of the integrated multi-media platform that promotes more than just print and this is just another way to reach our audience,” said Chris Callen, owner/ Editor In Chief of Cycle Source.

To promote the combination of this technology further, a subscription bundle has been arranged to give physical subscribers the opportunity to add the digital edition for a very reasonable $5 per year (12 issues).

Subscriptions can be bought three ways now, paper magazine= $20 per 12 issues (US), digital edition= $20 per 12 issues (Anywhere) or by adding them both together for an additional $5 to the regular subscription rate.

Zinio is a full service distribution company that just recently announced a deal where they are the exclusive digital newsstand provider to Barnes & Nobel. Our first issue is on sale right now and can be previewed at www.zinio.com/cyclesource

SPY OPTIC BETTER SUNGLASSES– CARLSBAD, CA – October 15, 2009 – (Motor Sports Newswire) – The color orange is symbolic of much of life itself; bold, fiery, unique and sometimes blinding, a color that ignited a group of active friends in Southern California to re-invent eyewear. Their vision was orange and a single thought rang true: “it’s not seeing different things; it’s seeing the same things differently.” Spy Optic was created by a group of action sports and motorsports enthusiasts who immersed themselves in the culture they knew best. Key founders Mark Simo, Brian Simo and Beaver Theodosakis saw what was on the market for eyewear in 1994 and wanted to make sunglasses better. As authentic, well-connected action sports entrepreneurs, their unbridled enthusiasm for reinventing modern eyewear attracted the world’s best athletes from motorsports, surfing and snowboarding. Spy’s athletes became a huge and influential part of the Spy family and the team’s mojo combined with Jerome Mage’s innovative design sense helped fuel the brand’s rapid growth.

A world-class roster of athletes helped shape, build and lay a foundation for the Spy brand. Snowboarders Shaun Palmer, Victoria Jelouse, Marc Frank Montoya, David Carrier-Porcheron, surfers Sunny Garcia and Malloybrothers, BMX rider Jamie Bestwick, motocross sensation Jeremy McGrath, skateboarder Danny Way, NASCAR drivers Richard “The King” and son Kyle Petty, Indy Car superstars Christian Fittipaldi and Paul Tracy. Spy team riders are not only elite athletes, fun personalities, but also key influencers in the development and design of its technical products for sunglasses, motocross and snow goggles.

Spy’s ground-breaking technological advancement of the all new patent-pending dual Mosaic lens in the Apollo snow goggle uses a proprietary anti-fog and anti-scratch lens that offers brilliant and maximum peripheral vision with nominal profile. Its one-of-a-kind lens technology is the most advanced on the market today.

To continue to push the envelope for exceptional excellence and standards, in 2005, Spy acquired LEM S.r.l., a high quality sunglass and goggle manufacturer in Varese, Italy, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Orange 21 Inc., the parent company of Spy Optic. A majority of Spy’s sunglasses are hand fabricated at LEM S.r.l., which has crafted premium eyewear for Spy and other superior eyewear brands for over 15 years. Spy Optic’s products are unique and the development is original. BUELL OFFICIALS THANK CUSTOMERS, DEALERS AND EMPLOYEES FOR UNFORGETTABLE RIDE– EAST TROY, Wis. (Oct. 15, 2009) Buell Motorcycle Company officials thanked the company’s customers, employees and dealers for an unforgettable ride, following today’s announcement by Harley-Davidson, Inc. that it will discontinue the Buell product line as part of Harley-Davidson’s go-forward business strategy. The new long-term strategy aims to drive Company growth through a focus of efforts and resources on the Harley-Davidson? brand.

“I want to personally thank all our past and present Buell employees, dealers and suppliers for their efforts. I also want to thank Buell motorcycle owners for their support and passion for the brand,” said Buell Motorcycle Company President Jon Flickinger.

Flickinger said a limited number of new Buell motorcycles remain available for sale through authorized dealerships and production will wind down by October 30. He also stressed that Harley-Davidson will provide replacement parts and service through dealerships and that warranty coverage will continue as normal for Buell motorcycles.

“I will always be proud of what we have accomplished. It is a testimony to what a small group of passionate and inspired people can do, and with brilliant innovations, we’ve produced some of the best-handling bikes of all time,”? said Buell Chairman and Chief Technical Officer Erik Buell. “I personally look forward to exploring how I can continue to work with Harley-Davidson to bring advanced product technology to riders.

“I have also had the great fortune to meet and get to know many Buell riders over the years, and they are an amazing and interesting group of free thinkers,” Buell said. “May you ride with pride into the future. And may your roads ahead be as adventuresome and rewarding as mine have been for the last 26 years.”

HARLEY-DAVIDSON ANNOUNCES 3RD QUARTER RESULTS, UNVEILS LONG-TERM BUSINESS STRATEGY– Retail Harley-Davidson Motorcycle Sales Decline Moderates from 2nd QuarterOperating Loss at Finance Unit Impacts Profit

Strategy Focuses on Extending Harley-Davidson Brand, Emphasizes Productivity and Strengthening Core BusinessCompany to Discontinue Buell Product Line, Divest MV Agusta

MILWAUKEE, October, 15, 2009 Harley-Davidson, Inc. (NYSE:HOG) announced decreased revenue, net income and earnings per share for the third quarter of 2009 compared to the year-ago period, while reporting a moderation in the decline of retail new Harley-Davidson motorcycle sales compared to the second quarter.

Worldwide retail sales of new Harley-Davidson? motorcycles declined 21.3 percent in the third quarter compared to last year’s third quarter, an improvement from the 30.1 percent decline in this year’s second quarter. An 84.1 percent decline in net income and an 84.5 percent decline in diluted earnings per share from the year-ago quarter reflected lower motorcycle shipments and the effects of the economy on retail and wholesale loan performance at Harley-Davidson Financial Services.

Harley-Davidson also unveiled major elements of its go-forward business strategy to drive growth through a single-minded focus of efforts and resources on the unique strengths of the Harley-Davidson brand, and to enhance productivity and profitability through continuous improvement. As approved yesterday by Harley-Davidson’s Board of Directors, the Company will discontinue its Buell product line and divest its MV Agusta unit as part of this strategy. “While the environment remains challenging for us, we are mildly encouraged by the moderation in the decline of dealer retail Harley-Davidson motorcycle sales,”said Keith Wandell, Chief Executive Officer of Harley-Davidson, Inc. “And moving forward, our strategy is designed to strengthen Harley-Davidson for long-term growth and deliver results through increased focus.”

“As our announcement regarding Buell and MV Agusta indicates, we are moving with the speed and decisiveness required to bring our business strategy to life,” said Wandell. “The fact is we must focus both our effort and our investment on the Harley-Davidson brand, as we believe this provides an optimal path to sustained, meaningful, long-term growth.”

Third Quarter and Nine-Month ResultsNet income for the third quarter was $26.5 million, compared to $166.5 million in the third quarter of 2008, on revenue of $1.12 billion, compared to $1.42 billion in the year-ago period. Diluted earnings per share were $0.11 for the third quarter of 2009 and $0.71 in the year-ago period.

Through nine months, Harley-Davidson, Inc. reported net income of $163.6 million, down 71.6 percent and diluted earnings per share of $0.70, down 71.4 percent from the year-ago period. Revenue through nine months was $3.57 billion, down 17.1 percent from the same period last year.

Delivering Results Through Focus Strategy

A key element of the Company’s go-forward strategy is to focus on extending the Harley-Davidson brand by leveraging unique Harley-Davidson strengths. The strategy focuses company resources on Harley-Davidson products and experiences, global expansion, demographic outreach and commitment to core customers. In addition, the Company will continue to expand its initiatives to enhance profitability through continuous improvement in manufacturing, product development and business operations.

“We are refocusing our business with the expectation that we can provide growth that is both profitable and sustainable over the long term,” said Wandell. “We believe we can create a bright long-term future for our stakeholders through a single-minded focus on the Harley-Davidson brand.”

Details of Buell and MV Agusta ActionsThe Company will discontinue production of Buell motorcycles. Remaining inventories of Buell motorcycles, accessories and apparel, while they last, will continue to be sold through authorized dealerships. Warranty coverage will continue as normal for Buell motorcycles and the Company will provide replacement parts and service through dealerships.

The decision will result in a reduction over time of about 80 hourly production positions and about 100 salaried positions at Buell. Employment will end for a majority of Buell employees Dec. 18, 2009.

Harley-Davidson, Inc. expects to incur approximately $125 million in one-time costs related to the discontinuation of the Buell product line. The Company expects to incur approximately $115 million of that amount this year.

Relative to MV Agusta, the Company will immediately commence efforts to sell the business, which is based in Varese, Italy.

In the third quarter, Harley-Davidson, Inc. recorded a one-time fixed-asset impairment charge of $14.2 million related to Buell and a goodwill impairment charge of $18.9 million related to MV Agusta.

“Buell and MV Agusta are great companies, with proud brands, high-quality exciting products and passionate enthusiasm for the motorcycle business. Buell has introduced many innovative advancements in motorcycle design and technology over the years and MV Agusta is known in Europe for its premium, high-performance sport motorcycles. However, our strategy to focus on the Harley-Davidson brand reflects the fact that we believe our investments in that brand are a better utilization of overall company resources,”? said Wandell.

Motorcycles and Related Products Segment

Third Quarter. Revenue from Harley-Davidson motorcycles during the third quarter of 2009 was $803.3 million, down 22.1 percent compared to the year-ago period. The Company shipped 54,236 Harley-Davidson motorcycles to dealers and distributors worldwide, down 27.4 percent from the third quarter of 2008 but in line with previous guidance of 52,000 to 57,000 units. Revenue from Parts and Accessories totaled $221.8 million during the quarter, down 14.4 percent and revenue from General Merchandise was $70.7 million during the quarter, down 15.9 percent compared to the year-ago period. Gross margin was 33.1 percent of revenue for the quarter compared to 34.0 percent in the year-ago quarter. Operating margin was 9.5 percent compared to 16.4 percent in the third quarter of 2008. Operating margin was affected largely by lower gross margin, restructuring charges and impairment charges.

Nine Months. Through nine months, revenue from Harley-Davidson motorcycles was $2.62 billion compared to $3.23 billion in 2008 on shipments of 187,085 Harley-Davidson motorcycles, compared to 226,898 motorcycles in 2008. Revenue from Parts and Accessories totaled $623.1 million during the first nine months, down 11.8 percent and revenue from General Merchandise was $215.5 million during the nine-month period, down 12.0 percent compared to the year-ago period. Gross margin was 34.6 percent and operating margin was 14.1 percent, compared to 35.4 percent and 18.9 percent respectively in the year-ago period.

Retail Motorcycle Sales– During the third quarter, retail sales of Harley-Davidson motorcycles decreased 21.3 percent worldwide, 24.3 percent in the U.S. and 13.1 percent in international markets, compared to the prior-year quarter. Industry-wide U.S. retail heavyweight (651cc+) motorcycle sales declined 35.9 percent during the quarter, compared to the year-ago period.

For 2009 compared to 2008 through nine months, retail sales of Harley-Davidson motorcycles decreased 22.9 percent worldwide, 25.5 percent in the U.S. and 16.5 percent in international markets. Industry-wide U.S. retail heavyweight motorcycle sales declined 38.7 percent year to date in 2009, compared to 2008.

Update on Restructuring Activities–On a combined basis, the Company expects previously announced restructuring activities, together with the discontinuation of Buell operations, to result in one-time charges of $215 million to $245 million over 2009 and 2010, or an increase of $55 million from the estimate provided July 16, 2009. The Company estimates annual ongoing savings from restructuring of approximately $140 million to $150 million. The Company continues to pursue its previously announced “two path”? study to determine whether additional major restructuring at York, Pa. facility can make those operations competitive and sustainable long term, or alternatively, whether the Company will relocate those operations to another U.S. location. As part of the restructuring analysis, the Company has begun contract talks with the union representing employees at York and expects to make a final decision on the status of the York operations by the end of this year.

Cash Flow–Cash and cash equivalents totaled $1.52 billion as of Sept. 27, 2009, compared to $504.4 million at the end of the year-ago period. Cash provided by operations was $511.1 million and capital expenditures were $89.4 million during the first nine months of 2009. For the full year, capital expenditures are now expected to be $125 million to $145 million, including $15 million to $25 million related to restructuring activities.

Guidance–The Company is narrowing its guidance for full-year 2009 shipments, and now expects to ship 222,000 to 227,000 Harley-Davidson motorcycles to dealers, including 35,000 to 40,000 during the fourth quarter. The Company continues to expect full-year gross margins to be between 30.5 percent and 31.5 percent.

BARBER VINTAGE FESTIVAL–It’s not very often that I get a chance to step away from my desk, but once a year I’m guaranteed my freedom at the Barber Vintage Festival in Leeds, AL.

The festival is held annually at the Barber Motorsports Park and Museum, just outside of Birmingham. The festival is a tribute to all things motorcycle and is a perfect way to celebrate the enthusiasm we all share for motorcycles. While there I had access to legends and champions of motorcycle history that have made the sport what it is today. There was also the parts swap that helped many a rider locate the parts they needed for their latest project. There was more than enough there to pique my interest and start me thinking about what my next project will be. I’m thinking a 1974 Triumph restoration would be fun, anyone want to lend me a hand?

There were several bike shows, an auction or two, AHRMA road and motocross racing, guest speakers, seminars, the wall of death, Aeroshell air show, great food and much more. If you’ve never been to Barbers, the vintage festival is the best time to go.

And don’t forget the museum!

The Museum collection now has over 1000 vintage and modern motorcycles and as well as a substantial collection of Lotus and other racecars. It is considered the largest in North American and possibly the world. There are approximately five hundred motorcycles on display at any given time. These bikes range from 1904 to current-year production. There are bikes from 16 countries that represent over 140 different manufacturers and the museum is in a constant state of improvement, adding new exhibits so that every time you visit Barber’s they’ll be something new to experience.

You can find more information about the Barber Motorsports Park at www.barbermotorsports.com. There is also a separate website for the vintage festival www.barbervintagefestival.org.

Freedom Fighters Tossed Out of Cop Event– The Desert Thunder event was just another in a string of opportunities for us to preach Rights to other riders. I had never heard of it before but there are so many runs these days, most are unfamiliar to me.

We got to Las Vegas Friday morning. Karen drove my wife and me from the airport to the 13th Annual Motorcycle Rally and Car Show and to the back gate where vendors were allowed in before the start of the show. The event gatekeeper told us the rules were not many, but we heard Club patches were not allowed. When I joked about my “patch” (which is the Bikers Of Lesser Tolerance [BOLT] logo on the back of my shirt) being allowed in, the old guy said it was not a problem. The bad clubs? are not allowed, but the good clubs are OK to enter. Yup, those are his exact words.

Our first clue that something didn’t smell right The guy was definitely was out of line with the club comment, and that bothered me more than his clueless idea that BOLT is a club. I run into people that don’t understand BOLT. Nothing new.

The Desert Thunder had not yet begun when David Stilwell, both a BOLT member and ABATE of Southern Nevada member, described to me a growing list of clues that culminated with the realization that we were not going to have an easy time signing up people to ABATE membership, or erasing the decades old myths about what makes a helmet “legal.” It’s clear we were talking motorcycle Rights at a Police Officer event.

Why could it be a problem? Over the years, the relationship between police officers and motorcycle riders has become strained with the erosion of Rights, both in the courts and through the legislature – state and federal. Who knows this better than a patch holder (Bones, who is the President of ABATE of Southern Nevada and was told to lose the vest with the M/C patch) and an active BOLT member who has kept police from violating our Rights and violating the law. In California, helmet tickets written to someone wearing a helmet are a violation of the rider’s 4th Amendment and 14th Amendment Rights. In 1996 it became a violation of a federal injunction against writing those tickets, and considered a False Arrest, (an arrest without Probable Cause).

Most police who write those helmet tickets are not trained well. If shown the case law they wouldn’t bother riders who have a helmet on. Why risk being fired and sued for a little traffic fine? This is why most cops don’t write helmet tickets. Some understand. Others suspect something is up even if they never heard the specifics.

We went into it knowing there would be a great educational opportunity that we don’t get very often, since the number of contacts? with officers has dropped drastically with the huge results we have seen in our court cases over helmets tickets.

Cops Offended By Rights Info–Hours later, on day 1 of the 3 day run, a phone call from the Promoter, also a cop, notified us that he was angry and wanted us to take our information and go home. I have to admit I was not surprised. I can get along with almost anybody. I can usually shake hands with a police officer after a talk about law or Rights. If fact I had done that several times already that day. BOLT has a history of peacefully bringing officers and Judges around to seeing our point, just by talking. But not every cop will hear it.

The ONLY contact telephone, email on the ground or anywhere in the 3 state area was Stilwell. He made all contacts with the run official, and did all official communication with the police officer coordinating the run. Stilwell is a very respectable and respectful man. A gentleman even when he was being told we were being removed from the run. Five days later, we hear reports that the police are inventing details, you know, like they do sometimes in court. Inventing details like we were invited back in to stay, then kicked out again for aggressive behavior and being mouthy. This just proves to me that the police officer and run coordinator now realizes he was wrong ? that he over-reacted. He needed to use his imagination to re-create our actions to make his re-actions justified. Anyone who knows me or Stilwell will easily see through the phony story of aggressiveness. We did not sit closed mouthed behind the booth table, or not one person would have talked to us. 95% of the run participants were cops from California, and they just aren’t as interested in ABATE as they are in a cigar or another patch for their Blue Knights vest. The other vendors could sit back and collect their money. We were informing and teaching. It all boils down to the disgust that a few cops had for the fact that we were spreading information that keeps riders from having their Civil Rights violated by police officers.

A bastardization of the First Amendment — It is shameful for any cop, but somehow I am a little surprised. Bad Cops don’t usually make it so obvious they don’t respect your Rights.

BROTHERS OF THE WIND UNITE–Crazy times, but if we hang on this too shall pass, and we will ride on the top of the mountain once more–or die trying, right. We can’t ever give up. When the going gets tough, the tough get going.

Or, what the fuck, we can all get jobs working for the new government healthcare bureaucracy. They’ll give a third of the population jobs to make sure that folks who don’t want to work have free health insurance. How does that work?

Okay, I’m being facetious on a day riddled with bummer news. I’ll hold my mud, hold my girl, watch my wallet, and pray for surf. We may need to punt, but the key is finding jobs for folks, and then giving them the confidence to spend money. Oh, and kick the banks who don’t lend funds. Bank of America is in even more trouble this week. Somebody grabbed e-mails that said screw the customer, keep the money.

Next week, we will deliver on some DVD and book reviews. I read the MotorBooks Vincent found in a Barn Book,. It’s packed with interesting stories about wild motorcycle finds and deals. We have Cycle Source Magazine Throttle Junkie Tech in the works. We are working on several features, including a Power Plant bobber and the Progressive/Sucker Punch project bike. Dave Zien promised the story behind his Deer kill.

We raised almost $600, for the Intrepid Veterans Brass Balls Charity Raffle, when 85 brothers and sisters joined the Cantina. The raffle is due to take place next week at Biketoberfest. Hang on for the results.

Governor Schwarzenegger/California Lawmakers Squander Limited Financial Resources on Firearm Owner Registration Scheme– Fairfax, Va. – Governor Schwarzenegger has signed a severe yet impotent gun control measure into law. Assembly Bill 962, taking effect on February 1, 2011, mandates individuals purchasing ammunition to be fingerprinted and registered at the time of sale and outlaws mail order ammunition purchases. AB 962 also requires dealers to maintain these records indefinitely and make them available for inspection by the California Department of Justice.

As an additional burden, ammunition retailers are also required to store ammunition away from purchasers. AB 692 also failed to garner support from Attorney General Brown, and any law enforcement organization. In fact, 15 sheriffs wrote letters of opposition to this legislation.

“This law presents intrusive and unnecessary burdens that will only affect law-abiding firearm retailers and gun-owners, not criminals,” said Chris W. Cox, NRA chief lobbyist. “At a time when California is facing dire budget problems, California has squandered valuable resources in policing law-abiding Californians instead of investing in substantive measures that target criminals. More than two decades ago, Congress abolished similar requirements to U.S. federal law because ammunition sales records were found to be ineffective for solving crimes. It is indeed regrettable that foolish minds and bogus arguments prevailed over common sense and empirical evidence.”

Governor Schwarzenegger vetoed Senate Bill 585, a bill that would have prohibited the sale of firearms and ammunition on the property or inside the buildings that comprise the Cow Palace in Daly City, just outside of San Francisco. He also signed Senate Bill 175, which will exempt gunsmiths from a vague California law. This exemption will now allow for the exchange of a firearm to or from a gunsmith for purposes of service or repair.

“Governor Schwarzenegger acted in the interest of good public policy with his actions to SB 585 and SB 175. But, in signing AB 962, he has paved the way for one of the most intrusive and ineffective gun control laws that California has seen in recent years,” said Cox.

The National Rifle Association will review all possible options to remove this draconian, requirement from California statute, and will assess legislative and legal remedies to do so.

BIKERNET ENGLISH DEPARTMENT WORD OF THE YEAR, 2009– triskaidekaphobia tris-ky-dek-uh-FOH-bee-uh, noun:Fear or a phobia concerning the number 13.

Thirteen people, pledged to eliminate triskaidekaphobia, fear of the number 13, today tried to reassure American sufferers by renting a 13 ft plot of land in Brooklyn for 13 cents . . . a month. They all fell in a sink hole and died.

— Daily Telegraph, January 14, 1967

Past disasters linked to the number 13 hardly help triskaidekaphobics overcome their affliction. The most famous is the Apollo 13 mission, launched on April 11, 1970 (the sum of 4, 11 and 70 equals 85 – which when added together comes to 13), from Pad 39 (three times 13) at 13:13 local time, and struck by an explosion on April 13.

— “It’s just bad luck that the 13th is so often a Friday”, –Electronic Telegraph, September 8, 1996

Despite NASA’s seemingly ingrained case of triskaidekaphobia, which forced managers to impose the bizarre, ’13-free’ numbering system on its flights, the crew of perhaps the most important Shuttle mission to date clearly were unsure if STS-41C was supposed to be unlucky or not.

— Ben Evans, Space Shuttle Challenger: Ten Journeys into the Unknown

Triskaidekaphobia is from Greek treiskaideka, triskaideka, thirteen (treis, three + kai, and + deka, ten) + phobos, fear.

Dave

RETIRED STATE SENATOR, DAVE ZEIN, BECOMES DEER HUNTER–ABATE of Wisconsin celebrated its 35th Anniversary on October 10th, 2009, in Wisconsin Rapids. We were waiting for Sen. Dave Zien to arrive on Friday evening as he was leading musician and movie producer Mike Jones to the event. The deer are at the beginning of the rut season and it’s dangerous to be riding after dark on some of the two lane roads leading to Wisconsin Rapids. That’s exactly the route Dave Zien took, with Mike Jones following him in a borrowed car. Jones phoned me to tell me he could hardly keep up with Zien as he bent his 2009 Road Glide around the twists and turns along Highway 10, east of Stevens Point. “Suddenly, there was a flash of white fur, a blur and then it looked like the Macy’s New Year’s Day Parade, complete with confetti storm,”? Jones said.

Dave Zien had hit a deer at about 60 mph and his briefcase, over stuffed with papers, notes and maps exploded into a blizzard of documents covering the entire two lanes of the highway. Jones pulled over expecting the worst, but it appeared Dave only suffered a contusion to his lower leg. The deer didn’t do as well. The buck was floundering around on the ground, kicking it’s hooves up in the air as a motorist pulled over to see what was going on. Jones shouted, “Put him out of his misery.”? Luckily, the car driver shot the deer and not Zien who apparently was also distressed and in pain at this time. Just then, a local cop pulled up with red and blue strobe lights piercing the cold night air.

By this time, Zien was already on the ground proceeding to disembowel the deer with his K-bar. Uhruh, Semper Fi. The astonished cop asked Mike Jones what the hell was going on, and Jones in shock and confusion said, “I don’t know, I’m a vegetarian.”?

Ziendeer2

Mike Jones is convinced Zien is a complete mad man. Not only did Zien survive a 60 mph crash into a deer, he gutted the beast out, strapped it to his bike and continued on his way to the ABATE anniversary party. Nothing stops a Marine when he’s on a mission.

Some think Dave hit the deer on purpose because there is rumored to be a brass shortage and ammunition is being hoarded. With deer season just around the corner, perhaps Dave was jumping ahead of the game, harvesting a deer and conserving ammo all at the same time. Who knows what goes on in the mind of the Million Mile Harley man?

DETROIT BROTHER STAR IN UPCOMING DISCOVERY SHOW– DETROIT- Business hasn’t been too good lately for the Detroit Bros. Custom Cycles shop. Founders Dave and James Kaye hope the magic of TV may soon help.

The brothers are starring in an upcoming Discovery Channel series called “Motor City Motors” that they hope not only will turn around their struggling business, but also provide a boost to their economically challenged hometown.

“I think the show will bring some attention to Detroit and all of the possibilities here — all the available jobs, all the intelligent people that are here and are out of work or are struggling with their job or aren’t getting paid enough,” James Kaye said. “I’m hoping we can really make a difference.”

Each hour-long episode follows the Kayes and their dad, John, as they work to build a one-of-a-kind vehicle over a five-day period. And the stuff they’re building goes way beyond the typical custom bike or car.

In one case, they built a “Festevil,” a kind of a hamster wheel with a 1991 Ford Festiva in the middle. The Kayes removed a three-foot section from the center of the body, then set the subcompact car inside 10-foot steel rings with independent braking for each side.

Series producer Eric Lange said eight of 13 episodes have been shot, and the first one will premiere early next year.

“It was a win-win situation for them. Their bike shop was hurting. And this was a chance to bring Detroit builders in and give a little back to Detroit for them,” Lange said Friday at an open house for media, officials and businesses.

The brothers are given a challenge and a team of workers on Monday and get five days to make it a reality.

In addition to the Festevil, the Kayes also turned a 1929 Model T into a hot rod and transformed a 1992 GMC Suburban into a pothole filler with a 10-foot nitrogen spring-loaded arm, rotating hot box, 500,000-BTU torch and hydraulic tamping front end.

“We throw big challenges at them, which I always love. It’s ‘can you do this?’ That’s all,” said series creator Thom Beers, whose Original Productions also is responsible for “Deadliest Catch” on Discovery Channel and “Ice Road Truckers” on The History Channel.

The Detroit Brothers, both in their 30s, take pride in being from Detroit and hope the show trains a spotlight on the men and women who represent today’s car culture.

“It’s been hectic, terrifying and amazing — a really surreal experience,” Dave Kaye said.On the Net:
