Hey,
I don’t know if we’ll rock the world but we’ll give it a helluva shot, and we’re looking for partners in the industry. My current partner is Dave Rash, the boss of D&D Exhaust. Here’s the issues: First we’re going to work with the university of Texas and the environmental efforts and the cost for success study. We will demonstrate where the money needs to be spent to effect the greatest change in the environment.
The second issue involves the future of motorcycling. “We are screaming about gas prices, when the rest of the planet has faced even higher prices for over a decade,” said the Pope of Pipe, Dave Rash. “Do you know what other countries do to curb the gas crunch? They ride motorcycles.” High gas prices could be a major boon to motorcycling.
Let’s hit the news. We’ll bring you more reports on the above over the weeks to come. Also note how the noise issue may change for the louder in the coming months. Oh, and our Bikernet Webtrends report came in for May. We had 318,000 unique users who came to visit Bikernet almost 600,000 times, for 909,000 impressions and over 8 million hits. Not bad for a bunch of bikers. Let’s rock:

Oakland Police Department Backs Up Bikernet Noise Study Headline: “Oakland cops can be heard, if not seen” Tagline: “City spends $15,000 on mufflers to make Harleys safer — and noisier than federal standards.”
Over in Oakland they like it loud — so loud that all 45 of the Police Department’s Harley-Davidson motorcycles have been equipped with shiny new tailpipes, at a cost of $500.00 apiece, to rev up their roar. It seems that the cops just didn’t feel safe on the toned-down bikes.
“There’s an old motorcycle adage that you are heard before you are seen,” said Deputy Chief Dave Kozicki, explaining the department’s decision to toss the bikes’ muted factory-issued mufflers in favor of the more high-volume pipes.
Kozicki cited an accident three months ago in which an Oakland officer riding a toned-down cycle was struck by a motorist who said he hadn?t hear the officer approaching. But some City Hall insiders, as well as motorcycle cops elsewhere, said the safety argument is a stretch.
Even the folks at the national Motorcycle Industry Council (MIC) which represents all the big bike manufacturers, were unaware of any safety benefits from louder mufflers.
“We encourage all motorcycle riders to keep the original low sound levels that meet the … federal sound limit of 80 decibels,” said industry spokesman Mike Mount. “It would seem counterintuitive that a law enforcement agency would go against federal standards.”
Ironically, it was just a short time back that Oakland police were called upon to crack down on noisy motorists who had modified their auto mufflers to make a whistling screech. The “whistle tip” pipes were eventually outlawed under state law.
Oakland’s cops had a long tradition of riding their Harley-Davidson with the modified, louder tail pipes, hearing them the nickname “Rolling Thunder.” But after an officer complained about a loss of hearing and other around town questioned whether the police force was violating the very noise standards it was supposed to enforce, the department brass ordered a switch to the quieter stock mufflers.
So last year, the department launched a $1,200 study in conjunction with the city?s risk management division to determine whether: A) the louder motorcycles contributed to the officers? safety, B) were detrimental to their hearing, and C) complied with noise standards.
Kozicki acknowledged that whatever safety-related findings the study produced were largely anecdotal. Still, after everything was taken into consideration, the department concluded ?it was in the best interest of the officers to put more-audible pipes back on,? Kozicki said.
Hence, all 30 of the department?s Harleys were sent down to the central maintenance yard for a muffler makeover at a cost of about $15,000, according to City Hall insiders. Another 15 newly-purchased motorcycles were ordered with the louder pipes, though at no extra charge.
Oakland officials acknowledge that the noisy pipes, when tested, averaged 93 decibels ? well above the federal legal noise limit, according to the Motorcycle Industry Council.
But city Finance Director Mill Nolan, who oversees the risk management division, isn?t alarmed. ?if they were riding eight straight hours, it would be a problem,? he said. ?But they aren?t.?

MOTORCYCLE RALLY IS AN ANNUAL TRIBUTE TO PAPPY WHO FOUGHT FOR OUR FREEDOMS– Motorcyclists participating in Sunday’s Memorial Run arrive at the Comstock Cemetery in Montville for a brief service at the grave of Donla “Pappy” Pittsley.
Montville – Bald heads shone in the bright afternoon sun and pony-tails blew in the light breeze Sunday as the pack of roaring motorcycles rolled down Depot Road toward Comstock Cemetery.
It was easy to see those heads and others clad in baseball hats and colorful bandanas as many of the riders weren’t wearing helmets during the memorial motorcycle run, which was fitting, as the event remembered the Montville man who led the fight against a mandatory helmet law and also fought for the rights of motorcycle riders.
The 33rd annual Memorial Day motorcycle run, whose name changed this year from ?Pappy’s Run? to the ?Memorial Run,? is held each year to remember Donald ?Pappy? Pittsley and his efforts to give motorcycle riders the ?freedom to choose.?
This year was no different as thousands participated in the event, but many riders continued to refer to the ride by its original title. ?It’s more of a celebration of individual freedom, than just helmet laws,? said John Stratton. ?(Pappy) was a good man. He believed in individual freedom.? David Hutchins, the co-chairman of the Connecticut Motorcycle Riders Association, who spoke at Pittsley’s grave Sunday, estimated that between 3,000 and 4,000 riders showed up at the Sprague Road & Gun Club to participate in the event.
Standing at Pittsley’s grave, encircled by a large group of riders, Hutchins reiterated the significance of the run. Hutchins remembered Pittsley with a moment of silence and then went on eulogize the man who fought so hard against a mandatory helmet law and inspired others to do the same after his death in 1975.

Wanted for SpeedWeek, Women riders and Men to build the Lady’s Bikes– We would like to find additional women riders, who would be interested in setting records and then accept the challenge of racing for the title of Women’s Fastest Motorcycle Rider. We do not need a rider with a lot of experience, as the two bikes we have entered do not have a lot of hp. The new rules require that the rider have a m/c endorsement on their driver license. Rider must live in the LA area of Calif. Single, Fit, Age 18 to 25, not taller than 5′ 6′. We will train you to ride/race with safety.
As you know using a women rider to set the records generates a lot of publicity. The last two years I have worked with Kimberly and she has set five records now. I met Kimberly in December 2005 and she had never operated a motorcycle. By August 2006 she was setting two records in front of National Geographic TV film cameras and in 2007 she was filmed for NBC Jeep World Of Adventure Sports while setting three Land Speed Records.

Root Beer Float Part 2

Building bikes was simple until Harley-Davidson threw in a myriad of models, new engine configurations and now the axles are larger, which fucked with the bearings, sprockets, rotors, frames, etc. At one time we all built rigids, using the same frames and components. That lasted for 20 years. I digress. It ain't so no mo'.
Two dissimilar elements kicked off this build, new 1-inch axle, Harley-Davidson spoked wheels with contoured rims, that shook the industry, and a retro rigid frame from Kraft Tech, set up for a 3/4-inch rear axle. Kent, the master builder behind Lucky Devil Metal Works knew just what to do. He replaced the stock 1-inch sealed bearings with sealed 3/4-inch units.
“Sealed bearings are kick ass,” Kent told me. “Timkens need to be set up with .002-.006 end play, but sealed bearings have no need for end play, but the center spacer must be perfect. If the center wheel spacer is too small it will roast those puppies pronto.”
For 3/4-inch axles Kent makes his center tubes out of 1-inch DOM mechanical tubing with a 3/4-inch I.D. for a comfortable slip fit. “You don't want a sloppy spacer banging around in there or fucking with wheel balancing,” Kent explained and tried to hit me with a ball peen hammer, 'cause I was about to touch something I shouldn't.
Kent made a new axle for the rear wheel and an aluminum end cap with a counter-bored hex nut fastener. He also makes his own thick wheel spacers. “That gives them a more solid grip on the frame,” said Kent.
Most of the current sprockets are built for 3/4-inch axles or Timken bearing wheels, and he needed to open the centering hole to fit the late model hub.
“I believe the old standard sprockets have a 1.999 hole,” Kent said, “and the new units have a 2.210 hole.” Fortunately the fastener holes are the same.”
Kent likes PBI sprockets. “They afford me several options,” Kent said, while machining our sprocket. “They have lots of offset options for the trans or rear wheel and I like the aluminum rear sprockets.
Alignment is critical and Kent began the process with the engine and trans in place, loose. Then he bolted up the primary, centered the rear wheel and aligned the sprockets.
Seat Pan Installation:
Next came the Lucky Devil seat pan, hand made by Kent to fit the lovely Sin Wu. “I cut a chunk out of flat mild steel, 14-guage sheet and worked it over with an air hammer to develop the shape, with the owner's ass in mind.”
I snatched up the ball peen hammer.
“I didn't mean it that way,” Kent said regarding Sin Wu's nice ass. “I do consider the owner's ass, body style, arm and inseam length as I build and mount any seat system.”
We also discussed how the seat impacts the gas tank, the oil tank, the battery and the rear fender. All these elements need to be considered for proper fit.
After he built the seat pan he mounted the Fab Kevin seat hinge system and Rocky's, Pure Kustom, valve spring suspension system. “I used 1-inch medium body foam on her seat,” Kent explained. “It's pink. I like pink.”
He glued the foam in place then shaped it with a Scotchbrite 3-inch wheel. While I ground my teeth over the “Pink” comment, he explained that there are various foam alternatives. “For a round-town bike I use a stiffer foam,” Kent said. “For longer distance projects I use unifoam, which combines a softer foam on top molded to a stiff foam on the bottom.”
Kent handily mounted the Pure Kustom seat suspension system, but we decided to relive the process through Rocky Felis's web site, with his shots:
Root Beer Float Part 1–2008 Bikernet Project Bike
By Bandit |
We love a visual stimulation, mystic guide to stimulate any bike project. We're fortunate to know several inspiring biker artists, including Tim Conder who created this eye-candy to kick us off the mark and get us started on the mini-bob. I was also inspired by Sin Wu's diminutive size and the former Russ Tom's artistry to develop a bike so tight and right that it would not only be a knockout, but a classic artistic sexual expression. That's what Sin Wu is all about, sex.
No, it's not going to be pink and be adorned with thongs. It's not going to be a solid chrome artifact, but something so timeless that it reaches all builders. I don't ever mind sharing the credit for the construction, design and inspiration. Russ Tom, of Downtown Seattle built a Panhead in a traditional H-D rigid frame years ago, and I spotted it in a garage off Junction Street in Sturgis a decade ago. He shrunk the already light looking classic, which made the bike even compact looking, and distinctive, yet the finish was basic black. It was a classic and taught me that it could be accomplished for the right rider.
I've known Tim Conder for 20 years and his passion for motorcycles, coupled with his artistic talent is remarkable. I looked to him to bring our notion to life. The master fabricator behind the Root Beer Float was hand picked for his fabrication and sheet metal artistry. We have covered Kent Weeks', Lucky Devil Metal Works in Houston, and his developmental evolution for the last five years. Kent is an excellent builder, fabricator, sheet metal manipulator and designer.
He will take a simple bob job and turn it into a functional piece of art. Kent's Shamrock bike and his Triumph Bobber for Joe T inspired me. As you will see over the coming months, Kent can turn anything ordinary into something extraordinary. He is a master of details and you'll learn as the bike is assembled the level of care and reliable function he imparts into every aspect of a build from wiring to oil lines. “But I generally build long bikes,” Kent told me recently.
I like to afford an artist his own style, and we all need to keep that in mind when we pick someone to build a bike. You don't want to approach Paul Cox and ask him to build a Denver Chopper. He's a master in his realm, where he's comfortable. In this case I felt Kent was capable of this notion and might come to understand the challenge and embrace it. If not, he can do whatever he pleases, he's the man.
This bike is based around a classic retro Kraft Tech frame, an original Harley-Davidson VL front end, an 80-inch Harley-Davidson engine and 5-speed Softail transmission. The wheels are also pure Harley-Davidson, but late model styled contoured rims and the Avon tires will not be wide at all. We generally run with reliable Spyke and Compu-Fire electrics. The Carb is a highly modified H-D CV by Ron Trock and Dennis Goodsen of Fantasy in Iron built the cast aluminum air cleaner. We're still pondering the oil bag and sheet metal, but let's start with some of Tim Conder's thoughts:
…other folks would do it different, it's that “circle of life” thing, and I ain't trying to step on toes…
I really love simplicity these days, and my next Bomber gets this Bronze/Navy Blue color scheme. Sin Wu said she likes deep wood tones, so a super dark burgundy or blue pearl frame, oil tank, wheels and front fork would really set the amber tones off. The whitewall (on the back only) lightens the bike up and gives 'er a “nicer” feel. I'm a sucker for front 21s on a stripped early H-D, and this also gives it a sweeter, lighter feel. I'd like to see the shotguns and the notched early horseshoe oil tank on her bike, without the notched gas tanks.
Frankly between you and me, I'm pretty burned out on all the old timey gingerbread that's going on the “Chobber” style bikes. I realize to stand out these days most folks think they gotta get wacky. However, there are plenty of cool tricks to be applied to Nyla's bike without being too trendy…*Shortened frame tail – Cut the frame diagonals where they meet the back bone in the seat area, and down low where both sides of the frame are straight and parallel. Then just cut the rear tranny crossmember loose at the back and move the whole tail forward as much as you can. Then re-weld.
*De-rake it and shorten the forks if you have to get that front tire tucked way up there.
*The stock oil tank not only needs to be notched for the electric start primary boss, but it will need to be modified to look right in the shorter frame, as well as hold a typical new style battery.
*Shotgun exhaust is very short, 2″ diameter pipe with VERY subtle mounts and stainless tips machined from thickwall tubing.
*Rear fender is a hinged stocker that will have to be pie-cut where the upper frame tube passes by the fender side. The reason for this is stock fenders rise up and away from the tire at the hinge, and must be cut and pushed down to follow the rim perfectly.
*16×4 inch rim using a Coker RePop Firestone 5.00×16 whitwall on the rear. The 1″ extra rim width will flesh out the tire for a stockier look, and let the tire actually fill out the fender.
*I would use the beautiful stock mechanical rear brake and the early springer front brake, but if you need a disc, a Tolle or Exile Sprotor is great for keeping the brakes on the primary side.
*You can actually chuck up a V-Twin aftermarket top springer tree in a lathe and machine the spuds down to accept 1″ drag bars, or Flanders “Low Cafe” bars on each side, just cut out the center, slip the bar ends over the spuds and weld them up.
*Skull dash, no stretch. Stretching anything on a Bobber confuses the era. That's custom Softail territory.
*The temptation to black out the engine is strong on bikes with black rims, but the early Cop (20s, 30s, 40s and 50s) bikes had natural aluminum drivetrains with black rims and to me they were much more interesting.*Depending on Sin Wu's height, mid-controls will be really fun for her I think, and tricky to install cleanly. Especially with a mechanical rear brake.
Yeah I know, there are hundreds of hours of labor here that only the badasses will see….I cain't help it!!!!! – Tim
Root Beer Float Part 3 Plus Extras

When the package arrived with the new BDL belt drive system in it we had a little problem. Unfortunately when our hell hound doesn't get the chance to chase the delivery truck he takes it out on the cardboard.
Fortunately none of the contents were damaged (this time) so I got everything spread out to make sure I had everything I needed and also to make sure nothing had been consumed by the beast . In this package they sent the instructions on a disc but if your computer isn't able to read it I recommend you simply go to their website where you can download the instructions and or just check out some of the various install info here on Bikernet.com.
In the last round I had already installed the inner primary with a new sealed bearing so I went right to the business of assembling the front pulley.
Following the supplement instructions in the box, I installed the spline insert into the pulley and to keep from scratching it up I used a clean red rag on the bench while I installed the supplied roll pins from the back side of the assembly.
Next, I turned the pulley over and set the outer plate into the pulley, applied red Loctite (supplied with the kit) to the three 5/16×18 fasteners and bolted the pulley, insert and outer plate together.
After flipping it over again to install the inner plate, I started checking over the pulley alignment and spacing the front pulley as needed, this process is not too complicated. It is important to rotate the motor to be sure the belt is tracking properly. It's critical to avoid extreme belt wear and a big problem on your hands later.
Once you are ready to install the pulleys it is recommended to use red Locktite on the transmission spline shaft, but I skipped this step because it will come back apart for paint later.
But for Sin's project we discussed chopping up the outer primary cover. This will not only vent the hell out of the primary system but it will provide a different look too.
Most of the time I like to vent the inner primary cover by drilling holes in it while I have it off and on the bench and before I press in the new main bearing.
I also normally cut spacers on the lathe to space out the derby cover to vent the outer cover as I did on this other project bike.
This is actually a very old trick and with all the narrow belts that have been run over the years. I think it's safe to say it's been done before. I think it might be cool to fabricate a belt cover similar to the covers on the open primary systems to give it a cleaner look and keep rocks out?
The next thing on the choppin' block for this project will be to get the rear section set up with the new Paughco bobber style rear fender and twin tanks mounted
Speaking of the “other project bike” in the shop
I had the opportunity to install a six speed gear set from S&S along with the closed belt system. During the install I didn't take very many good shots because I was haulin' ass and flyin' solo. I thought it was worth sharin' if nothing else to show some of the case modifications.
S&S products come with good detailed instructions on how to set up the gear set and it went in easy, not that I recommend this task for a total beginner, but a guy with some modification experience can get the job done without difficulty.
Next, I removed the main gear and bearing and began carving up the stock Harley tranny case. Using the supplied template I marked the area to be trimmed and started removing material for the proper clearance for the new shift fork assembly where the outer shift shaft support used to be, as well as a couple other specified places inside the tranny case.
Once I had the case cleaned out, I installed the new main gear & bearing, new shift shaft sleeve & new shift arm assembly, and gear set.
I mounted the shift drum and clearanced the top cover and wrapped up the install. I don't want to make it seem like it took 10 minutes or anything, but it did slip together like sex and so far hasn't given me any trouble. My buddy Rick loves it, so it's all good!
Back at the Root Beer Float we are still grappling with the wheels, the classic VL front end, hubs and fitment. I am cool with running a 39MM front end (and I even have one we can put on) but we will still have the issue with the front hub being too wide and I know ya'll wanted to run the old springer to help with the classic look.
I do have these late factory mags that match the motor / trans that have sealed wheelbearings and narrow glide front hub that will give plenty of room for a brake hanger up there. The only thing you may not like is the front wheel is a 19″ and rear 16″ I know you were going for the big wheel look but I also think these will look good too. if you like the idea I'll get you some tires for them and trade you for what you have. I know I have a front white wall around the shop for the front but I don't have a problem getting you black walls either, maybe some classic style Avon roadrunners?
Right on, what's your preference on the rubber, the white wall I have in stock is a maxis classic so I can get a 150/16 to match if you like or I can get you a set of Avon Road runners, I know you are an Avon fan so I figured you might go that way?
Here is a brief list of stuff we still need to figure out:
brake components ( rotors and calipers )
grips
hand controls
turn signals
gas caps
Speedo

The build up for the Root Beer Bobber designed specifically for our own Nyla Olsen has been painstakingly stretched out over the past two years. Due to circumstances beyond anyone's control, delays have hung their weary shadow upon the build causing the queen of Bikernet to sit back patiently…tapping her foot. Kent Weeks, the devil from Houston, refuses to let time dictate his creative flair or expert design decisions when building a bike. He is stoic in his straightforward approach to build something exactly as he sees fit to build it. This is the reason Bandit chose him for the build.
As usual, per any build, the concept starts with one thing, design-wise, but the finished product very rarely hits the pavement exactly as the original design is planned. Kent massaged this build to fit Nyla exactly, she should be more comfortable on this bike than she was on the Custom 1200 Sportster Bikernet built several years back.
The beautiful brake rotors painted to match the frame, front end, and oil-bag. The rotors are going to look beautiful with the GMA brakes and touch the bike off beautifully with the BDL controls. BDL bought GMA and kept the tradition alive when Bill Gardner retired.
As of the last installment, there were several questions to be answered concerning final components. The front end was also still up in the air as to whether go with the VL Springer or use a 39mm Narrow-Glide front-end. In the end, Kent stayed with the original VL and also painted it’s legs to match Ken Hill’s job on the tanks and fender.
Ken Hill not only handled the paint and pin-striping, but he also performed all of the body work. His shop is in The Woodlands area and it's called Ken's Airbrush.
Kent heavily massaged the gas tanks and dash to fit the profile of the bike, but unfortunately, I broke the disc that Holly gave me of the pics, so they are lost forever. Here’s a shot of the frame hanging in Kent’s paint booth.
The hand tooled leather seat is styled to match the engraving that adorns several components of the bike. Glenn Priddle, owner of GP Leather in Australia, really out-did himself on not only design, but quality as well. The seat is designed to cradle Nyla's posterior with the same gentle touch as Bandit’s sasquatch sized hands. Heather New, of New Line Engraving put her delicate touch on several of the bike's components.
The flowers add a feminine touch to a machine that emanates an attitude for the road. It seems ironic that something styled to be so sweet could come from the Devil’s compound. I expect everything he touches to be laced with evil, but maybe this bike is comparable to the forbidden fruit in that it looks tasty, but the consequences could change your life.
The paint has a marbleized finish that starts at the top and then fades as it goes down the tanks’ crown. So looking at the top of the bike, you will se the marble. From the side you only see a shadow that appears to lick the top of the bike. If you look from the lower components, like during service or routine tightening, you won’t see the dark shades of marble.
Custom Chrome Euro Dealer Show For 2008
By Bandit |
Custom Motorcycle Mayhem at Mainz/Germany: With a powerful and extraordinary Bikeshow, dealershow and european Championship of Custombike-Building, the 2008 edition of the CUSTOM CHROME EUROPE DEALER SHOW again topped last years record results in terms of attending dealers, visitors and bikeshow-participants – not to forget the glamourous guest-stars from the US and Germany: Jesse James, Cory Ness, Marcus Walz and Fred Kodlin. The quality of the motorcycles exhibited blew everybody’s mind – as 100 never before seen custombikes premiered at what now is the most excellent bikeshow of europe and the definite highlight in the european bikeshow calendar and a true celebraton of Custom Chrome Europe’s 10th anniversary Dealer Show.
“If you want to see extraordinary Custombikes, it is here,” stated one visitor pushing through the crowd on Sunday noontime. “I’ve been here at the Phoenix Hall ever since the event was moved to Mainz and opened to the public and I never saw the same bike twice!” Europe’s market leader in Customparts-Distribution again has teamed up their show with the AMD European Championship of Custombike-Building to create one of the best Custombike-Shows in Europe. 100 awesome custombikes from all over europe participated, competing for three tickets to the World Championship at Sturgis/South Dakota in August 2008 and prices worth no less than 30.000 €!
“The quality seen in these bikes is just incredible,” stated both Custom Chrome Europe President Holger Mohr and AMD Show host Chris McGee. In 2008 the show marked the big comeback of the german customizers, as two out of three top FREESTYLE class bikes came from Germany and (almost) every other 1st price was won by a made in Germany Custombike! Top-honours and the prestigious EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIP went to Thunderbike at Hamminkeln, authorized Harley-Davidson Dealer, who are well known for their 2006-Bike Spectacula, winning both the European Championship and the vice-world champion title! So Open Mind was in the footsteps and built to win, nevertheless achieving the task in spectacular fashion.
Second place went to Sturgis-experienced french team of Riverside Motocyclettes for a stunning one-off frame sportive lowrider that is as radical as the brake system is dangerous: Bicycle-brakes instead of brake discs. Nevertheless, the radical compact bike caught the attention of the other builders which, along with judges from press and industry, had to select their favourite bikes. Stunning design, advanced technology and the most radical choice of tire one have ever seen on a Custombike won TGS from bavaria the 3rd ticket to Sturgis: Ice-Speedway nails!!! The Seppster shares the name with last year's show-winning creation but is in fact a completely new creation with one off frame, single-side-fork and turbo-charged S&S 96 cubic inch V-twin. The Freestyle class again attracted some of the wildest custom creations from all over Europe, but the Modified Harley-Davidson category, this year with a 31-bike strong field did show some extraordinary craftmanship! The Custom Chrome Motorcycle class highlighted the best bikes build from CCE’s motorcycle kits. Again, TGS scored top-honours in this class with their Spirit-based, Voodoo Child.
This years 10th anniversary had Custom Chrome Europe bring out the best of the best fort he dealer show and the exhibits too: Classic motorcycles from German collectors ????? and Dieter Hofem, painting artist Michael Knepper and more than 50 top-names of brands from the CCE catalogue, most of which were represented by the presidents themself . S&S’s Brett Smith, who will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the engine manufacturer in june 2008, was there to pick the best S&S-powered custom creations and to check out some of the bikes that were built to be part of the 50-bike special exhibition that will highlight this years celebrations: Fred Krugger Bertrand was the first European to finish his project and Germany based shop Custom Garage exhibited the first European X-Wedge powered bike, tributed to the anniversary!
This years Special Guests included West Coast Chopper TV-Star and Bikebuilder Jesse James, Cory Ness and his son Zac, taking Custombike building in the Ness family into the 3rd generation, world renowned Custombike photographer Michael Lichter and former CCE designer and legendary bike-builder John Reed who was awarded with a special exhibition at the event AND received a Custom Chrome Europe Lifetime Achievement Award for his outstanding work.
“We are looking forward to the year 2008 with great confidence“, said Holger Mohr, “as we have very interesting new products for all Twin Cam riders and our Custom Chrome Motorcycle line is running well. ALL RevTech engines are now Euro-3 approved using carburators – and we have a complete new engine line coming up. Not to forget that we have upgraded our Custom Chrome Europe Motorcycle line to meet European emission standards and the changing trends.” With approximately 3,000 visitors on Sunday, plus the 1,500 CCE-dealers from all over the world, the event was a huge success for both CUSTOM CHROME EUROPE and the Custombike Motrcycle market in general! “It is incredible that already 10 years have passed by,” says Holger Mohr, “but we have come quite a way in those years – and the future has a lot to offer.“

Hey,
This news will be strange. Aren’t they all? Hollister is this weekend in the wine country of California, and the LA Calendar show rocks the Queen Mary right here in Long Beach, the home of WCC. That’s just the tip of the chrome iceberg. There?s events and parties all over the globe, plus we’re all preparing for Sturgis.
We have our famous 5-Ball trophy parts ordered and my fingers are crossed for the Kevin Baas Bikernet metal signs. I’m hand-building the Best of Show Trophy bases. Plus Mike Lichter asked me to create a metal sculpture for his Art Exhibit at Thunder Road in the Dome in Sturgis.
That’s not all. A high-Dollar Ducati was delivered to the Bikernet Headquarters on Monday and Tuesday morning a lovely model arrived at our Headquarters with Rick Hustead, a photographer for Easyriders, and picked up Billy Lane’s bike. I’ll tell you about the Italian Duck at the end of the news:
HARLEY-DAVIDSON TO ACQUIRE MV AGUSTA GROUP EXPANDING PRESENCE IN EUROPE–Italian Company Known for Premium, High-Performance Motorcycles.
Milwaukee, Wis., July 11, 2008 — Harley-Davidson, Inc. (NYSE: HOG) today announced the signing of a definitive agreement to purchase the Italian motorcycle maker MV Agusta Group (MVAG). Under the agreement, Harley-Davidson will acquire 100 percent of MV Agusta Group shares for total consideration of approximately 70 million euros ($109 million), which includes the satisfaction of existing bank debt for approximately 45 million euros ($70 million). In addition, the agreement provides for a contingent payment to Claudio Castiglioni in 2016, if certain financial targets are met. MV Agusta Group is privately held, with the Castiglioni family owning 95 percent of MVAG shares.
The acquisition is expected to close in several weeks, pending the satisfaction of contingencies and receipt of regulatory approvals. Harley-Davidson intends to fund the transaction primarily through euro-denominated debt.
MV Agusta Group has two families of motorcycles: a line of exclusive, premium, high-performance sport motorcycles sold under the MV Agusta brand; and a line of lightweight motorcycles sold under the Cagiva brand. MV Agusta?s F4-R motorcycle, powered by a 1078cc in-line four-cylinder liquid cooled engine, is rated at 190 hp. The company sells its products through about 500 dealers worldwide, the vast majority of them in Europe. In 2007, MVAG shipped 5,819 motorcycles. During 2008 MVAG has significantly slowed production due to financial difficulties.
?Motorcycles are the heart, soul and passion of Harley-Davidson, Buell and MV Agusta,? said Harley-Davidson, Inc. Chief Executive Officer Jim Ziemer. ?Both have great products and close connections with incredibly devoted customers. The MV Agusta and Cagiva brands are well-known and highly regarded in Europe. They are synonymous with beautiful, premium, Italian performance motorcycles,? Ziemer said.
Harley-Davidson, Inc. plans to continue to operate MV Agusta Group from its headquarters based in Varese, Italy. Following closing, the first priority will be to appoint a leadership team to include a new Managing Director and to resume the manufacture of current models.
Current MV Agusta Group Chairman Claudio Castiglioni will continue in a leadership role as Chairman and will play a major role in future product development. Design Chief Massimo Tamburini will continue his leadership of MV Agusta Group?s world leading sport-bike design studio.
?We take enormous pride in MV Agusta and Cagiva motorcycles,? said Castiglioni. ?Our riders seek an uncompromising experience in premium performance motorcycles. And with Harley-Davidson?s deep understanding of the emotional as well as the business side of motorcycling, I have great confidence that our motorcycles will excite customers for generations to come.?
According to Ziemer, the acquisition is intended primarily to expand Harley-Davidson, Inc?s presence and footprint in Europe, complementing the Harley-Davidson and Buell motorcycle families. Retail sales of Harley-Davidson motorcycles have grown at a double-digit rate in Europe in each of the last three years, as the Company has increased its strategic focus on global markets.
?The acquisition of MV Agusta Group will enhance Harley-Davidson, Inc?s position as a global leader in fulfilling customer dreams and providing extraordinary customer experiences. We look forward to a long relationship with the MV Agusta and Cagiva families of customers and employees,? said Ziemer.
Conference Call
Harley-Davidson, Inc. will hold a webcast conference call regarding the acquisition from 8:00 to 8:30 a.m. (central time) today, July 11, with Tom Bergmann, Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer, Harley-Davidson, Inc. To access the webcast, please log on and register at least ten minutes prior to the start time at www.harley-davidson.com
RUN TO THE S&S 50TH RAY WHEELER, W8LESS MASTER, SAGA–San Jose to Laughlin, then Larkspur, Colorado for two weddings, then to Wichita, Kansas for 2-3 days and monsoon madness, then off finally to lake of the Ozarks, Sunrise Beach, Missouri. Lynn Long threw on a paint job quick in two days. Best friend since ’67. He used drawer liner to mask off the theme real snappy like. Out of the Ozarks, destination S&S 50th on 2004 Dyna with RR 124-inch engine and Daytona Twin Tech EFI, with RB Racing pipes.
In Wayland, MO the fuel line quit. Ended up on the road for four hours. No one stopped except the Mail lady who pulled a page out of the phone book and gave it to Ray. He made calls. He called a half-dozen bike shops and they didn’t have time on a Monday, between noon and five to rescue a brother along side a road scattered with road kill running from the Mississippi floods.
Finally Haps Brothers, truck and agricultural repair service, out of Wayland, MO, Keith and Tony came and got him. They both rode custom metric bikes.
“They were too cool,” Ray said. They worked on the bike until 11:00, then worked with Tattoo Artist Doug Smeltser. Loaded up at midnight and Doug gave him a place to stay. Next morning they hauled to Heartland H-D in Burlington, Iowa. He was there all Tuesday and Wednesday to 5:00 and spent $11,000 to fix and replace a $32 collapsed fuel line. Remember our editor Bruce Snyder had the same problem with his King.
He rolled to Ainsworth, Iowa to Sucker Punch Sally dealer Papa Clutch, Tim Anding, his parents own the truck stop up the road. He hit a monsoon and hid out under a hotel awning until midnight. Clear skies, lollypops and he peeled out with Bad directions from the truck stop lad,y turned around on highway 20 slipped onto highway 38 to Anamosa and J&P Cycles.
About 4:00 in the morning heading into an unknown dangerous curve a pickup pulled onto the road behind him, flashed his brights and ran right up on his ass. “Four bikers have died on that curve in the last year,” Ray said. It went from hard pan to pea-gravel. He lost total control but rode straight off the bluff. “I slipped past the guard rail, fortunately, over a bluff and down a hill. Dead man’s curve.”
Sat on the guard rail for awhile then returned to my bike for a flashlight. It was black. Tried to flash down folks, but half-dozen folks, wouldn’t stop. Called 411 for cops number, but was disconnected three times. Called 911 and they couldn’t decide what county he was in.
“Stay on line, policeman on the way. Can you hear the sirens?” He wasn’t found for a couple of hours. Then the cops arrived from all different directions. Two cars and a pick-up. Talked about getting a wrecker, but one of the cops, Dave Weatherwax, was a rider. “I’ve been riding forever,” Dave said. ” I’ll ride it.”
They got it upright and pushed it up the hill. “I crawled over, punched the compression release and showed him how to start it,” Ray said. Fired it up.
“Cancel the wrecker, I’ll ride it home,” Dave said.
Cops took Ray to the Regional Medical Center in Manchester, Iowa. Fractured a bone in his foot. “I was there until 2-3 in the afternoon and an EMT gave me a ride to a Motel 6,” Ray said.
Dave Weather came over and hung out, told him that the bike was okay. He called his best friend, Kit Knutson. The next morning Dave’s friend came over with his bike loaded up and took him to the S&S 50th.
The Boss of Purple slice delivered Ray and his bike from Iowa to LA, where we patched up his bike for the six hour ride home to San Jose. Just another Ray adventure.
BANDIT’S CANTINA, WORLD RUN REVIEW–Great read, but I want to know about the end. I’ve been subcribing for a little over a year and didn’t even realize that you wrote a damn good story, until I got bored at work and read, Bandit’s Cantina – The Series. So, then I moved on to reading, Chance 2: World Run, — figured I start at the bottom of the book section and work my way up. Anyways, I hope the rest of the books don’t leave me hanging.
Hell, I haven’t read a book since High School and you got me hooked. I’m like a crack whore waiting for my next fix. I just got to now the end of that story. Have a good one and thanks for my entertainment here on the job.

EVENT–Automotive stylist, and son of the legendary designer of the ?forward look?,to be in attendance as his father?s custom 1957 Chrysler Diablo concept carcrosses the auction block August 15th to 16th in Monterey, California. Monrovia, CA (July 6, 2008) ? RM Auctions announced today that Virgil Exner Jr., son of the legendary V.P. of Design at Chrysler Corporation Virgil Exner Sr., will attend the much anticipated Sports & Classics of Monterey auction event in California, August 15th to 16th. Exner Sr. ushered in the first notable era of the Chrysler concept car with his ?forward look?, an innovative design concept which centralized around tailfins. One of his most notable works was the sleek 1957 Chrysler Diablo concept car, which is slated to make its auction debut at the RM event in August. ?We are extremely honored to be welcoming Virgil Exner Jr. to our Monterey event to offer a unique personal perspective on the design of the extraordinary Diablo,? said Ian Kelleher, Managing Director of RM Auctions. ?His insight on his father?s legacy will add much excitement to the offering, as the car has received considerable international interest.? ?Concept cars have always held our fascination and will be a featured highlight of the famed Pebble Beach Concours d?Elegance held following our Monterey auction? The 1957 Chrysler Diablo comes to us from a time when Exner was given carte blanche to develop his designs and express them with candor. It was designed with aerodynamics in mind to appear light and fluid, like a moving work of art and is a spectacular example of a show car. Even its immense stature (18.2 feet long, 6.7 feet wide) does not weigh down its streamlined, racy appearance. “I was fortunate to have an opportunity to drive the Diablo myself,” said Exner Jr. He added, “My father was very fond of the car, as it confirmed what he was trying to achieve – less chrome, clean lines, more sculptural in appearance. The Diablo which was a serious design that proved to have excellent aerodynamics and directly influenced the Chrysler line of cars for that followed,” recounted Exner Jr. RM Auctions’ Sports & Classics of Monterey will be held August 15th and 16th at the Portola Resort & Spa and Monterey Conference Center, in Monterey, CA. Coinciding with the famed Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, the annual auction event, which is now in its 23rd year, attracts thousands of automobile enthusiasts and participants from around the world. Admission to RM’s Sports & Classics of Monterey auction event is $40 per person, with children 12 and under admitted free of charge. The culmination of this planning will occur on June 27-29, 2008 as 50 of the world?s best custom builders converge on La Crosse, Wisconsin to compete for top honors in an amazing bike show. Along the way, S&S has been releasing commemorative items like a catalog loaded with historic images, a calendar reflecting images of S&S over the years and a line of apparel featuring the S&S 50th Anniversary logo. The only thing missing was a painting-or series of paintings-that represented S&S over the years.
?S&S has a reputation not only for it?s own quality, but the quality of it?s strategic alliances,? said S&S president, Brett Smith. ?We were very impressed with Stefanie?s work and her values and felt very strongly that she was a match for S&S and our efforts regarding our 50th Anniversary Celebration.? Smith went on to say, ?I am quite certain people will be very impressed with her work?just as we were??
Stefanie Aziere-Sattler came to S&S by chance and brought with her a distinctive painting style that reveals a perspective guaranteed to evoke emotion. Her focus is not on the object, but the feeling you get when looking at the object. Aziere-Sattler has been gaining recognition over the last few years with private commissions for many custom bike and car owners, and invitations to appear at such well-known shows as SEMA, Barrett-Jackson, The Sturgis Rally and The Goodguys Shows.
?I?ve been blessed with great things in my life; an amazing personal life and the passion to portray the vehicles people love in a little different light. I strive to give back some of the blessing with my work?life is a journey, enjoy the ride,? said Stefanie Aziere-Sattler.
A meeting between S&S staff and Stefanie produced an instant connection. Her artistic style and the rich history behind S&S were made for each other. Her first painting focuses on Bonneville and the many years S&S went out to conquer the salt flats. To be unveiled formally at the S&S 50th Anniversary Celebration, a limited number of giclee prints and lithograph prints will be available at the event. Aziere-Sattler plans to have five unique paintings done within a month of the S&S event, all available through the S&S website www.sscycle.com and Stefanie?s website www.chromedimpressions.com in limited numbers.

P.S. Keep up the great work on BIKERNET!
BIKERNET SAFETY ALERT, SOME TURN SIGNALS MAY BE WORSE THAN HAVING NO SIGNALS–I recently read a motorcycle awareness letter to the editor reminding the general public that many motorcycles don?t have self canceling turn signals. The point was to make sure a motorcycle was actually turning before pulling out in front of them. Sometimes riders forget to cancel the turn signal thereby sending the wrong ?signal? to other drivers.
It occurred to me that this may be a big factor in a lot of t bone collisions. Car drivers see a motorcycle approaching with their right turn signal on, then assuming the motorcycle is going to turn, the car driver pulls out. Since this is a problem that money can solve I am amazed that it hasn?t already been addressed. I know that many in the motorcycle industry hate any mandatory regulation but what do you think about making self canceling turn signals mandatory on new bikes.
I would argue that no signal light at all is better than one that could be on at the wrong time. With no signal light, riders use their hands to signal. Except at night, hand signals are probably as good or better. They are certainly never going to fool a driver into thinking you are going to turn when you aren?t.
I know there are kits to convert signals to be self canceling. Especially for new riders who already have lots to think about when they ride, this sure seems like money well spent. Even one accident prevented or avoided would make the whole program worthwhile.

THE END–I can’t believe I endured this far. All the girls lounged around Vegas for a week. I’ve got to blast over to the airport and talk security into turning them over to me. Then some of ’em will help me wrap up the news, and Coral and her new bubbly girlfriend will need to pick up all the whiskey and Tequila bottles and clean up this joint.
Keep an eye on Bikernet next week. We have another Jon Towle road test of his very first FLT standard. We couldn’t get him off that bastard. Rogue submitted a tech on the new Daytona Twin Tech EFI adjustment system and we have an unbelievable story about Bad Cops and one that was forced to choose sides.
We’re about to start a FXR custom touring build and these Renegade Wheels were key. With the Avon tyres mounted we can mock up the bike. Watch for reports.
Then there’s several bike features hanging fire. Never a dull moment at Bikernet.com.
Ride Forever,

BIKERNET GUN NUT REPORT, HOW YOU CAN EASILY BECOME A GUN FELON– ?If you pull the trigger once and it fires more than one round, no matter what the cause it?s a machine gun.?
At 2:15 PM on January 8 of this year, the Milwaukee jury in the trial of United States vs. David R. Olofson convened. Forty minutes later they emerged, returning a unanimous verdict against the veteran and National Guardsman: ?Guilty.?
Olofson, you see, had loaned one of his rifles, and it malfunctioned at a range, firing off short bursts before jamming. This was called to the attention of local authorities who seized the rifle, an Olympic Arms AR-15. They in turn called BATFE, who decided to make a federal case out of it, charging Olofson with illegally transferring a machinegun.
Enter Len Savage (See ?Failing the Test,? July 2005), President of Historic Arms, LLC, brought in by Olofson?s defense to testify the automatic fire was not by design or intent, but rather by mechanical failure, and that the firearm in question was simply a semiautomatic rifle that needed to be repaired.
The opposition would have none of that. Savage was not permitted to personally examine the rifle ? not even to touch it. He was required to observe as the ATF officer opened it for inspection. His professional credentials were challenged by the prosecution, who wanted his testimony excluded, even though Savage is a firearm designer by profession, and the government?s expert witness received all of his training in the 2-1/2 years he?d been with the bureau. Then the prosecution reneged on its pledge not to sequester witnesses, and had Savage removed from the courtroom so he could not hear the government?s testimony.
So in the end, it didn?t matter this was merely a case of a ?hammer follow.? It didn?t matter the rifle in question had not been intentionally modified for select fire, or that it did not have an M16 bolt carrier or sear, that it did not show any signs of machining or drilling, or that that model had even been recalled a few years back.
It didn?t matter that, when asked if he?d test fired the gun, Savage testified ?From my examination and from what I saw on the [ATF test] video I wouldn?t want to attempt it ? the video shows the guy who was shooting it was so afraid to fire it from the shoulder he had to hold it out in front of him. So he knew it was dangerous.?
It didn?t matter the government had repeatedly failed to replicate automatic fire until they replaced the ammunition with a softer primer type.
It didn?t even matter that the prosecution admitted it was not important to prove the gun would do it again if the test were conducted today.
What mattered was the government?s position that none of the above was relevant because ?[T]here?s no indication it makes any difference under the statute. If you pull the trigger once and it fires more than one round, no matter what the cause it?s a machine gun.? No matter what the cause.
Think about if your semiauto ever malfunctions. Because that?s how close you could be to becoming a convicted ?gun felon.?

COOLBETH CRUISES TO GRAND NATIONAL WIN AT VERNON DOWNS–Smith and Mees Complete A Podium Sweep for the Harley-Davidson Wrecking Crew.
VERNON, NY (June 1, 2008) ? Harley-Davidson Screamin’ Eagle factory rider Kenny Coolbeth led every lap and scored a convincing win on the Vernon Downs mile in the first complete race of the 2008 AMA Grand National Twins Championship. The two-time defending AMA Grand National Twins champion pulled away from an early battle with Chris Carr and was not challenged as he built up a lead that was 15.898 seconds at the finish of the 25-lap main. It was the 16th career Grand National victory for the 31-year-old rider from Morris, Conn., who was riding a Harley-Davidson XR-750 motorcycle.
The race-long battle for second place was a closer contest. Moroney?s/Screamin? Eagle Harley-Davidson rider Bryan Smith dogged Carr for 13 laps and made the pass for second place on lap 23 in the midst of a dog fight that included fellow Wrecking Crew rider Jared Mess of the Blue Springs/Harley-Davidson Screamin? Eagle team and PBW/Fresno Harley-Davidson rider Brandon Bergen. On lap 24 Mees slipped past Bergen for third, as the Harley-Davidson Wrecking Crew riders finished 1-2-3. Bergen, making his first appearance in a Grand National Twins main, finished fourth, and Carr faded and finished fifth.
It was the first AMA Grand National race at Vernon Downs since 2003, and for the second weekend in a row weather played a significant role. The race was delayed for hours after heavy rain moved through the area Saturday evening. The Vernon Downs crew managed to dry and groom the track and racing resumed on a good surface late in the evening. The main did not conclude until after 1 a.m. on Sunday. The Grand National Twins season-opener in Springfield, Ill., was rained out on May 24-25 and rescheduled for Labor Day weekend.
The next stop on the 2008 AMA Grand National Twins Championship schedule is June 21 at Mountain Raceway Park in Maryville, Tenn.
The Screamin’ Eagle Flat Track team is sponsored by Matco Tools.
