SENATOR CAMPBELL REVS UP ATTENTION TO SMALL MOTORCYCLE BUSINESSES: In a June 19 letter to the Environmental Protection Agency, U.S. Senator Ben Nighthorse Campbell (R-CO) urged the EPA to modify their proposed rule to tighten emission requirements for highway motorcycles by including a flexible implementation schedule.

“The flexible implementation schedule would ideally allow smaller motorcycle manufacturers more time to adjust to the rule in order to help them comply with the requirements, without going out of business,” said Campbell. “Clean air should remain a national priority, yet we must be mindful of the unintended consequences that new rules can have on our small businesses.”

Currently, six manufacturers (Honda, Harley-Davidson, Yamaha, Kawasaki, Suzuki and BMW) account for 95% of the U.S. motorcycle sales. Given their significant market presence and economies of scale, these companies are well positioned to incorporate new rules requiring production modifications, Campbell told the EPA. However, manufacturers of the remaining five percent of the motorcycle market are far less likely to meet more stringent requirements without significant and disproportionate market impacts.

The EPA intends to implement California-style emissions cut-backs in a two-phase plan beginning in 2006, resulting in an 80% reduction in motorcycle tailpipe emissions by 2010.

Stricter new limits will be established for hydrocarbons and nitrogen oxides emitted by the engines, requiring motorcycle manufacturers to reduce emissions from a currently allowable 5 grams of Hydrocarbons per kilometer to 1.4 grams/km by 2006 and .8 grams by 2010. Nitrogen oxides, which are unregulated at this time, must also be reduced to 1.4 grams/km in 2006 and .8 grams/km by 2010.

It is widely speculated that new motorcycles will be required to use fuel injection on the intake and catalytic converters on the exhaust in order to comply with the tough new federal regulations, as well as altering cam timing and making other engine modifications, including liquid cooling.

As the federal EPA prepares to release their final rule, it’s nice to know that we have friends in high places. Senator Campbell is a long time motorcycle enthusiast and is a member of the National Coalition of Motorcyclists Legislative Task Force (NCOM-LTF).

RIDING THE CAMPAIGN TRAIL : While Senator Ben Nighthorse Campbell may be the most visible motorcycling legislator, other politicians are climbing aboard.

During a recent meeting of Western governors in Missoula, MT, the star of the show was Idaho Governor Dirk Kempthorne, the former U.S. senator who could eventually be the president’s pick to head the Environmental Protection Agency. Kempthorne is a polished politician, but here he was in a rumpled suit and unkempt hair. What was going on? All was revealed when Kempthorne took the podium and told the audience that he had ridden his Harley-Davidson up from Boise. Kempthorne apologized for his ruffled suit, explaining that his saddlebags didn’t afford much room. The Republican even told how he’d pulled over to hear the birds chirp along the river. The image was Marlon Brando meets Marlin Perkins.

Montana Senator Max Baucus had a meeting in Glacier National Park to discuss the deteriorating condition of its Going-to-the-Sun Road. Baucus seemed to present the image that he was zooming to the rescue, federal checkbook in hand. Why? He arrived – you guessed it – revving the throttle of his Harley-Davidson motorcycle. And, yes, the Democrat did tip off the local TV stations before he rode into town.

Times have certainly changed since California’s Senator George Murphy once called bikers “the lowest form of animal”.

But Ben Long, a contributor to Writers on the Range, is apparently still stuck in the past. “Sure, senators want to look like regular guys, even though most of them are millionaires who wouldn’t know a carburetor from a camshaft. Politicians make laws. Rebels break laws. Politicians and Harleys go together like thermal long johns on an August day in the Mojave. We know the mundane truth: Politicians spend their days behind desks, not behind handlebars.”

JOURNALISM AT ITS WORST : “When Wisconsin repealed its motorcycle helmet law in 1978, cynics saw it as a way of improving the human gene pool. Through Darwinian selection, stupid people who didn’t wear helmets would die off and intelligent people who wore helmets would survive and multiply,” writes Joel McNally in his article “It’s Time to Put a Lid on Motorcycle Carnage,” appearing in the July 22nd edition of The Journal Times in Milwaukee.

“Wearing a helmet is the single most effective way of reducing deaths and serious injuries among riders. State legislatures across the country have been following Wisconsin’s example by listening to the crude, overweight biker lobbies that think rider safety isfor wimps.

The name of the strongest state lobby against motorcycle helmets illustrates how a simple, intelligent safety measure can be demonized by a right-wing, anti-government, militia mentality.

The lobby is called ABATE, which stands for A Brotherhood Against Totalitarian Enactments.

The name implies that totalitarian governments such as the old Soviet Union used to oppress their citizens by making them walk around wearing motorcycle helmets… Thank god we live in the good, ol’ USA where we have a Constitution guaranteeing the rights of motorcycle riders to scramble their brains across the pavement.

We realized the Marlboro Man wasn’t a symbol of American freedom after he died of lung cancer and we found out he’d been damaging everybody else’s health all those years with his second-hand smoke. It’s time we realized motorcycle riders who aren’t smart enough to put on helmets aren’t free of anything but intelligence.”

BUYOU POLITICS:Giving up Freedom for insurance profits. “We are just going to have to get inside people’s lives and change their behavior,” said former legislative auditor Dan Kyle in officially announcing his candidacy for state insurance commissioner on August 14, adding that Louisianians need to change their behavior to reduce insurance costs.

That includes banning all open containers of alcoholic beverage from vehicles, requiring all passengers to wear seat belts and require motorcycle riders to wear helmets.

While he differs with Governor Mike Foster over helmets, Kyle passed the litmus test for Foster?s support: He will decline all contributions from people in the insurance industry.

Kyle dropped out of the governor?s race because he couldn’t raise enough money to run, but told the Lafayette Daily Advertiser that “people in the business community” have agreed to finance his race for insurance commissioner in an effort to hold down insurance costs.

Kyle said rates are based on costs and he has many ideas of how to reduce costs, including stronger DWI laws to lower the number of deaths from drunk driving.

STURGIS BOUND: Amongst a half million bikers, who’d notice one felon? Convicted Watergate figure G. Gordon Liddy set up shop in Sturgis, SD, for the annual motorcycle rally. Liddy, 72, rode his 2003 Harley-Davidson 1,846 miles from the Washington, D.C., area to Sturgis, where he took part in book and calendar signings, a motorcycle ride from Mount Rushmore to the Buffalo Chip Campground, and he broadcast his daily radio show from the rally. In the nearby town of Deadwood, the mayor designated Monday as “G. Gordon Liddy Day” in the gambling town, and on Thursday, Governor Mike Rounds proclaimed August 7 as “G. Gordon Liddy Day” in South Dakota. Liddy served four years and four months in prison for his role in the 1972 break-in at Democratic Party headquarters at the Watergate.

THE GOVERNATOR: On August 7, actor and bodybuilder Arnold Schwarzenegger announced on the set of the Tonight Show with Jay Leno that he was running for Governor of California in the wake of a recall election aimed to unseat Governor Gray Davis.

Who can forget his thrilling ride on a Fat Boy in Terminator 2, which led to the T2:3D mega attraction at Universal Studios? The former Mr. Universe continues to be an avid motorcyclist and can frequently be found mixing with other riders at the Rock Store in the Santa Monica Mountains of Southern California.

Schwarzenegger has had past forays into the political arena. Two Indian Chief motorcycles used in making T3 were auctioned off to help fund California’s Proposition 49 to increase state grants for before and after-school programs, which was sponsored by Schwarzenegger, and he also served as Chairman of the President’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports under President George Bush.

Could the Presinator be his next sequel? Unlike the rise of Ronald Reagan from Hollywood actor to Governor of California, to President of the United States, Arnold doesn?t meet the qualifications because he is not a natural born citizen.

ILLINOIS GOVERNOR SIGNS MOTORCYCLE-FRIENDLY LEGISLATION: Governor Rod Blagojevich signed Public Act 093-0080 (HB-0123) into law on July 2nd to make it a violation to use or sell traffic signal preemption devices except by emergency vehicles, reports the Illinois Motorcyclist’s Rights Association. The IMRA introduced an amendment which “does not prohibit use by motorcycles of electronic or magnetic safety devices designed to allow traffic control signal systems to recognize or detect motorcycles.”

The amendment was created to protect use by motorcyclists of devices such as the “Green Light Trigger.” These devices allow the magnetic loops used by traffic signals to recognize the presence of motorcycles. This has been an ongoing problem for many years and IMRA believes it is important to protect the use of these devices for the safety of motorcyclists.

The bill as originally drafted made no distinction between these and other devices manufactured with the intent of changing the actual pattern of the signal. It would have assessed heavy penalties to both the consumer and seller of such devices.

The bill, introduced by Represenative Don Moffitt, passed unanimously through the House and Senate, and will take effect immediately.

WEIRD NEWS: ACLU DEFENDS DYKES ON BIKES PARADE A group of lesbians trying to hold Orange County’s second Dyke March say city leaders here have come up with a set of rules so onerous that they are trying to march them right out of town.

City officials told the Orange County Register that they have no problem with lesbians parading on their streets. But they say the Dyke March, led by Dykes on Bikes, will have to follow the permit process like any other group. This year’s permit was granted by the city with 21 conditions, including restricting the number of motorcycles to 10 and requiring that all bikers attend safety training before the parade and provide their driver’s licenses and proof of insurance. If police witness traffic violations, tickets could be mailed to the bikers.

“The conditions were clearly designated to make the process so complicated and so intimidating that we would just give up and go away. Well, we’re not going away,” said march organizer Lori Hutson.

The American Civil Liberties Union filed a lawsuit on behalf of the Dyke March in which they claim Costa Mesa is discouraging the group from holding what would be its second annual event on August 16 through its restrictions on motorcyclists, a requirement that organizers arrange for a $1 million liability insurance policy, and that they put up a deposit of more than $3,000 to pay for police.

The lawsuit filed in federal court in Santa Ana asks for a temporary restraining order to keep the city from imposing the restrictions, and contends that Costa Mesa’s permit process is unconstitutional because it lets the city arbitrarily impose conditions that demonstrators must meet to receive a permit.

The ACLU said it has won fights against similar restrictions on gathering permits in Long Beach, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara and Santa Monica.

EPA REGULATIONS COULD DESTROY THE EXHAUST PIPE INDUSTRY AND PREVENT MANY MODIFICATIONS TO BIKES IN THE FUTURE–Much of the following comes from American Motorcycle Dealer article by Richard Burton.

The EPA does, of course, recognize the tendency for owners to modify their motorcycles to enhance the performance and style of their machines and says it has accounted for this in its legislation. It cites the Clean Air Act section 203(a) as the legal authority that makes it illegal “for any person to remove or render inoperative any device or element of design installed on or in a motor vehicle or motor vehicle engine in compliance with regulations under this title…after such sale and delivery to the ultimate purchaser”. Actions that are illegal under this Act are referred to, specifically, as “tampering.”

Under the EPA’s proposals, new 2006 model” year motorcycles are required to meet Tier 1 standards (1.4 g/kmHC+NOx and 12.0 g/km ‘ CO) and new 2010 model year bikes Tier 2 (0 8 g/km HC+NOx and 12.0 g/km CO). To meet Tier 1 standards, the EPA has determined that there are four basic types of existing, non-catalyst-based emission control systems available. To meet Tier 2 standards, however, the EPA acknowledges that manufacturers may have to employ technologies not currently commonly used on many motorcycles. These include computer-controlled secondary pulse-air injection and three-way catalytic converters, as well as adaptive transient fuel control software and heated oxygen sensors in exhaust manifolds.

During a public hearing last year the AMA also warned of the potential dangers associated with some emissions control equipment, such as heat generation associated with catalytic converters. On motorcyclists modifying their bikes, he said that the AMA believes the existing tampering provisions are sufficient and urges the EPA to refrain from revising them.

The MRF also emphasized the importance of motorcycle performance, smooth power delivery and the use of technology that doesn’t generate excessive heat while stationary as being paramount to motorcycle safety. As well as reiterating the effects on the aftermarket, he also stated that the result of what the MRF called “this regulatory zeal” could be an increase in fuel consumption, traffic congestion and air pollution through a radical reduction in motorcycling in America.

PENNSYLVANIA TROOPER ARE RUNNING CAMOUFLAGE RADAR TRUCKS–Troopers using PennDOT trucks for radar camouflageState police are hiding radar in state highway work trucks in a campaign against speeding in construction work zones, according to The Associated Press.

In south-central Pennsylvania, troopers used Pennsylvania Department of Transportation vehicles to conduct Operation Chameleon/Nightcrawler. Trooper Kristal Turner-Childs told the news service the operation netted more than 175 speeding tickets in its first two days.

The news report indicated the operation began July 28 on Interstate 83, near Harrisburg, PA, using double-cab yellow pickups, dump trucks and foreman’s vehicles.

BIKERNET EMISSIONS LAWS STUDY–Bandit, you’re almost on the mark. The MIC, along with Harley, support the EPA standards because it will boost their market share by hindering or eliminating the small business manufacturers and the aftermarket competition.

The MRF and NCOM have opposed the EPA regs from the start as being unnecessary and overly restrictive. The AMA, with all its manufacturing support, is waiting in the wings, and have actually opposed efforts by the MRF.

The ONE person who could resolve all of this is the President, who could easily tell the EPA to back off. I’ve been after Sputnik to contact him and see what he can do, but so far I haven’t heard any results. In my mind, bikers can easily claim to have put him in office, especially with the numbers in Florida where the election was won.

BIKERNET MOTORCYCLE DEALER SHOW INVESTIGATION–Dealer show competition has reached sizzling heights. Years ago there was one dealer show in Cincy. It waxed and waned, then grew until it couldn’t fit in the Cinncinati facility. They moved to Indianapolis. Custom Chrome started their own show in Morgan Hill. Then Easyriders started a show devoted only to the Harley market. It’s been another Cincy success, but now the group wants to crush it. They have finally started to treat their customers with respect and alter the show to fit the needs of the changing industry. In addition Advanstar have launched an additional show in Vegas. All of these elements with crush your calendar during the same time period. Here’s a quote from Robin Bradley’s European based American Dealer mag:

However in the real world of tight budgets and lack of time, just like many firms, we have to take a hard look at how we are to embrace the show, coming as it does the weekend before the EasyridersV-Twin Expo in Cincinnati. In our case it is likely to mean that at least some if not all of our team will be away from our office in Great Britain and living out of suitcases on the road in U.S. hotels of one kind or another for some four and a half weeks, and doing so just two weeks before Daytona Bike Week. Therefore, for us, the costs of doing so will have to be absorbed by having smaller booths than we’d like. But that’s okay, I don’t mind that, if it does at least mean that we can therefore at least participate at all three dealer shows.

However, in the interest of editorial integrity I have to report that the market reaction we have received has not been favourable; there’s no way to dress it up. Advanstar have set themselves the worthy objective of booking some 200 exhibitors for Big Twin West, but I regret to have to report that at the time of going to press only two out of the 20 or so written opinions, and a further 15 or so verbal views that we have received indicate a booth booking to be had; and this informal canvas has included a wide cross section of potential candidates, including some big names whose support would normally be considered vital not just to the exhibitor critical mass of a show but also to the industry effort of getting dealers informed and motivated to visit.

Reporting this news gives me no pleasure. As I said above I intend to exhibit come what may, and hope the show is a success. I await the call I’ll be getting from certain parties when this article appears with some trepidation; but not with the shame I’d have if I was someone who would duck difficult news and fail to meet his responsibilities to report it as I find it– Robin Bradley, Publisher.

For all of us, the preferred option isthe full reauthorization – the 6-year plan – complete with the MRF-SMROjoint safety agenda called for by Congressmen LaTourette and DeFazio. Wecan call that “a full cup of TEA.” There are, however, other optionscirculating. One option is a two-year reauthorization that puts off for afew years some of the contentious money issues. I’m still trying to wake up. For the past two days the Bikernet crew had the austere opportunity to blaze to Buelton California and ride a selection of new 2004 Harleys that will be released to the public in Milwaukee at the 100th celebration. Harley’s new moto relvolves around the next 100 years and from the looks of the line-up, they’ll continue to rock. Rubbermounted Sportsters with 150 tires and major performance upgrade are high on the list for 2004.

Of course I wore my Diamond Gusset jeans and road tested them on the back roads of the California wine country. Not a bad jig. Let’s get to the news. I’ll touch more on the model launch later.

The factory did an admirable job of maintaining the classic look of the Sportster while making significant changes. Note his comfortable stance. FLATHEAD POWER KNUCKLEHEAD– H?r kommer bild 1 och en liten grej jag har skrivit om cykeln.Fredrik.

This is a genuine “Lightning” Knucklehead with a factory hot cam and factory ported heads “Y”-heads, only available to people with factory conections in -36 and -37. The motor is marked as a low compression engine, and oddly they did that on sport jobs in the late thirties, so of the initial 151 E-models built, probably not more than 30 of these was of the “Lightning” variety.

On the pictures the side stand is wrong (leg is too long) – I have found a correct one and will install that as well as the super rare early “squarish” crash bars. Apart from this the bike is 100% correct down to the motor internals, early pinion shaft, early valve covers (baby food jars), early style conrods, lightening gears etc. etc. Even the air horn is of the extremely rare 1937 only variety, as well as the handlebars (36-37 standard bars) The bike is also 100% restored, and it runs beautifully, great handling (frame and forks has been professionally straightened)and a bike that would outrun any bike of that era.

I also have an immaculate extra set of 37 “Y”-heads (the factory ported ones) a set of 36-37 rocker arms, 36-37 shafts, a complete set of the early rocker arm covers (the retrofit version for the 36-37 heads), really difficult to find. I also have an extra NOS 36-38 Pinion shaft, pushrods, standard bore 4-fin cylinderes and more. These parts will accompany the bike.

He was returned to the headquarters in the back of a San Pedro black and white, his hands bound with tie-wraps and duck-tape across his mouth. His camera was destroyed and only a shot of this test cruiser was stuck in his pocket.

My son, Jay Christopher Jarman, was killed on May 17 by hit and run driveronKings Highway and 27th Avenue N. in Myrtle Beach, SC. My son lived in Durhamand worked at Biker’s Boulevard in Raleigh, NC.

Is the death of my son, Jay being treated differently because he was on amotorcycle? My son was left dying on King’s Highway as the Brandon LeeBrogan(the driver) and Mark Daniel Urban (passenger and owner of the car) spedbackto their haven in West Virginia.

I read about the terrible slaying of a young teenage girl just walking on abike path in Murrells Inlet on July 2 in the Myrtle Beach Sun News. Ifollowed the story to also note that the driver was charged immediately andincarcerated and this driver was not released on a Personal RecognizanceBondas are the defendants charged with the death of my son.

It is of great anguish & resentment that no one seems to want to believe oraddress the facts regarding the subsequent arrest and charges of “leavingthescene of an accident with death involved”. The defendants In this case cameback six days later to Myrtle Beach from out of state and turned themselvesin. They were not charged at that time nor restrained in any way. In fact,they were allowed to leave the state and return to their home in WestVirginia. The judge said that they were allowed to return home while theauthorities took time to get paper work done, the investigating officer saidthat they were allowed to return home so that they wouldn’t miss anyschool”.We were not told that they were not in custody but found out much later.

The defendants were requested to return to Myrtle Beach some fourteen daysafter the slaying of my son. They were not charged until the very morning oftheir preset Bond Hearing. A $25,000.00 surety bond was set on Brandon LeeBrogan and also on Mark Daniel Urban and they were detained in the custodyofauthorities at that time. By noon the next day their bond was reduced topersonal recognizance and once again they were allowed to leave the stateandcontinue their lives unencumbered until perhaps the fall until a trial dateis set.

I have been informed that the owner of the car, Mark Daniel Urban had noinsurance on the car. I was told by Myrtle Beach police authorities that theState of South Carolina has no concern with out-of-state vehicles regardinginsurance.

The driver of the vehicle, Brandon Lee Brogan did not have his driver’slicense taken or restricted in any way, even though I have been told by MBauthorities that a charge of “leaving the scene of an accident with deathinvolved” assumes driving under the influence. A DUI charge, even in SouthCarolina, requires immediate confiscation & suspension of one’s driver’slicense. Why does Brandon Lee Brogan still have his license? Why was the carinvolved, a 1995 Mustang, never brought back to South Carolina. Why was thecar not kept impounded? The authorities let Brogan and Urban have theirdeathmachine back to cruise through more city streets. The customized ’95 Mustangnow, basically advertises the fatal accident by offering the profile of it’sdemolished windshield where Jay’s body was catapulted into it, now held inplace with duct tape and glue. The door and side panels resemble wadded upaluminum foil that someone tried to straighten out and reuse, where Jaycollided with the car when they drove in front of him. As of June 16, theyare still driving this car around their hometown. (pictures enclosed)

UNIVERSAL TECHNICAL INSTITUTE BEEFS UP FACILITIES–Phoenix, Ariz. – To meet the industry’s demand for Professional service technicians, Universal Technical Institute Inc. (UTI)?one of the nations leading providers of technical education training?announced that it is investing $54.2 million to expand its facilities across the nation, including relocating corporate headquarters. To accommodate this growth, the company plans to hire 100 instructors within the next two months.

Major investments are being made at Motorcycle Mechanics Institute (MMI) in Phoenix and Motorcycle & Marine Mechanics Institute in Orlando, Fla., among others.

At the Motorcycle Mechanics Institute Phoenix campus, UTI recently completed a $3.5 million, 42,000 sq. ft. expansion, which allows the school to accommodate more student enrollments and industry training. Now totaling 102,000 sq. ft., this facility trains service technicians for the motorcycle industry. MMI is the only technical training school supported by the top five motorcycle manufacturers.

In September, 2002, the Motorcycle & Marine Mechanics Institute in Orlando, completed a three-building, $6 million expansion to bring the total campus area to 117,760 sq. ft. The expansion will enable the campus?which trains technicians for the motorcycle, marine and personal watercraft industries?to enroll up to 1,900 students by 2004.

PETRALI SCULPTURE UNVEILED–To commemorate the 100th anniversary of Harley-Davidson Motor Company and in celebration of the history of motorcycling in Daytona Beach, Mike Corbin has commissioned artist Jeffrey Decker to create a life size bronze sculpture for display downtown. The piece depicts famed motorcycle racer Joe Petrali astride the machine that set a land speed record on the sands of Daytona Brach in 1937. The piece will be on permanent display in front of the Corbin Building on Main Street in Daytona Beach.

LOVE RIDE 19–The 2003 Love Ride, the 20th, November 9, 2003, will be a landmark event sure to exceed expectations and certain to maintain the image of the biker community as a group who cares. We’ll see you there. –ed.

Love Ride 19 is now a part of history and for all intents and purposes it was a resounding success. We had fabulous music from all our performers; we once again raised over $1 million for charity; and after four days of much needed rain the clouds parted to give us a perfect, absolutely picture perfect, day for motorcycling.

Things couldn’t have gone smoother the day of the event. But for me personally Love Ride 19 will go down as the event that almost didn’t happen.

Up until just a few days before the ride we had no insurance–a mandatory element in an event such as this. The major reason was the financial fall out from 9-11. Just about every insurance company got hammered in the wake of that tragedy, and their woes are being passed on to us. But I suspect that there was another factor at play. 2002 saw the unfortunate re-emergence of biker gang violence at a motorcycle rally–violence that received loud, nationwide publicity. The nasty old image of bikers was revived in the public consciousness–and this is something that hurts all of us.

I know for a fact that some people did not attend the Love Ride because of concerns about outlaw elements and the chance of a bad incident. This really bothers me, not only because they missed a terrific ride, but for the future of motorcycling. There is nothing much we as motorcyclists can do about international terrorists–but we can try to keep the terror element out of the biker community. No less than our freedom is at stake.

Another interesting fact on Love Ride 19 is that our average remittance per person was much lower than normal. We had a record crowd but not a record fund raising. This must be a reflection on the economy–which may also be attributed to all that went wrong with this world since 9-11.

For those of you who attended the Love Ride–I thank you. For those of you who helped organize and facilitate the Love Ride–which includes almost the entire chapter membership–I thank you especially. And those of you who chose not to attend because of concerns about violence I can only say that this is an attitude that let’s the terrorist and the bad guys win. The motorcycling community is ours and the only way to preserve it is to sustain it.

Keep riding and don’t let the bastards get you down.

I hope to see you at Love Ride 20. Believe me–it will be special.

2003 BRAG SCHEDULE ANNOUNCED–Milwaukee, Wis. – Buell Riders Adventure Group (BRAG) is excited to announce their 2003 Adventure schedule, packed with numerous opportunities to attack twisty roads across the U.S.

The first national event will be the 2003 BRAG Northeast Curve-Carving Touring Adventure, June 7-13. The tour kicks off June 7 at Centennial Buell in Pataskala, Oh., just east of Columbus. Riders will weave through parts of Ohio, Wet Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont and New Hampshire before arriving at Big Moose Buell in Portland, Maine on June 13.

The fall event is the 2003 BRAG National Adventure; Taking on the Southwest Twisties, October 3-5. This event takes on the infamous “Devil’s Corridor,” an 89-mile stretch between Clifton and Alpine with a few thousand curves.

MIKE LICHTER HOSTS PHOTO EXHIBIT AT JOURNEY MUSEUM–Mike promoted and produced another exhibit in Rapid City, South Dakota, Tuesday. He signed his new book Sturgis, from Motorbooks Int. which we recently review on Bikernet.

It’s a two-wheeled tribute, to the life and times, of the Black Hills Rally, is also a homage, to a man’s vast talents, with a camera. The hard-bound book is 10.25 by 10.25 inches and contains 168 pages, of heavy glossy stock, with a forward by Peter Fonda. Each image is handled, as if fine art, with grand white space to mat each photograph. Over a decade was dedicated to this odyssey, by Michael, to transform his art from the plentiful pages of Easyriders to an austere book devoted to Sturgis and his abilities with a Nikon Camera.

THE PULLIN MYSTERY–The Sunday of the July 4th weekend, I changed the plug wires on myevo-rigid, the memorial bike for Justin. No big deal. After that I tried tostart the bike with no success. I changed the plugs and it started. I rodeit through my neighborhood and it seemed to bogg down and foul another setof plugs.

I had one last spare set of plugs and I put them in. The bikestarted on the first kick. I went about an 1/8 of a mile and came to thefirst stop light and again the bike seemed to be running on one cylinder. Imade it through the light, and it was running bad. I was about to pull offthe road when I reached down to make sure the new plug wires were seated on theplugs.

Little did I know, I was about to go on the ride of my life. All of asudden the bike takes off full throttle, wide open. I almost went off theback of the bike and then into two violent fishtails and finally a wheelie thatwould make anyone proud. When the front end touched down I went over theZ-bars and onto the pavement.

I have been riding since 1976 and it was thefirst time I had tasted the pavement and believe me it has a taste all it’sown. I had road rash, a deep thigh bruise and a bruised chest. Most ofall my pride was hurt and I didn’t want to look at the bike. I gatheredmyself out of the road, and after I checked that I wasn’t bleeding to death, Iinspected the bike. No paint damage, I couldn’t believe it! Like I said, itis the memorial bike for Justin and the paint is very special. Uponinvestigation as to why this happened, the slide on the S.U. carb stuck wideopen. I take the blame for not lubing this properly.

This happened just two weeks before the 5th Annual Run For Breath “InMemory Of Justin”, and the bike has always been a big part of the run. Thedamge consisted of dented right forward control mount, rear brakepedal, footpegs, exhaust, kicker pedal, front brake lever and speedo cableand I was going to shift to a S+S E carb, since I can never remember to oilthe S.U. Not a lot of damage considering the bike was riding me instead ofthe other way around.

The problem I faced was how to get the bike ready for the run, since Iwas in Las Vegas the week before the run??? This is where the friendship andbrotherhood part comes in. While I was in Vegas four guys I work with atH-D of Charlotte said not to worry, it would be taken care of. I stillworried! Their names are Josh, Gingles, Brad and Ashley. When I returnedfrom Vegas, I only had the exhaust left to install and set the idleon the carb! This is what riding and brotherhood is all about, helpingeach other when it’s needed. They did it because they knew how much thebike and the Run For Breath means to all riders in the community.

The day of the run the bike started on the 2nd kick and ran flawlessly. As Irode I could only think of how Justin valued friendship and loyalty and howit still exists between bikers.

TONGLET TAKES SCREAMIN’ EAGLE TEAM TO NHRA PRO STOCK FINAL–Tonglet Wins Three Elimination Rounds; Hines Sets New Track Top Speed RecordMILWAUKEE, WIS. In his best performance of the season, GT Tonglet and the Screamin’ Eagle/Vance & Hines Pro Stock Bike drag-racing team defeated three tough opponents to make the final at the Sears Craftsman National Hot Rod Association Nationals at Madison, Ill., on June 29. Tonglet saved his best run for last as he posted his best time of the weekend, 7.177 seconds at 185.46 mph, but lost to Geno Scali by a mere 0.0177 seconds, or about five feet.

Tonglet was joined in Sunday’s elimination rounds by Screamin’ Eagle/Vance & Hines rider Andrew Hines. Hines qualified sixth with a run of 7.180 seconds and 191.97 mph, a new track top speed record for Pro Stock Bikes at Gateway International Raceway. Tonglet qualified 12th with a time of 7.237 seconds and 183.49 mph.

Hines was eliminated in the first round on Sunday, losing to Mike Berry after a mechanical problem caused him to miss his shift to fifth gear near the end of his run. He was leading at the time.

The next stop for the Pro Stock Bikes on the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series is the Mopar Mile-High Nationals, July 18-20, in Denver, Colorado.

FAMILY CHARGED IN BIKE THEFTS–By Heidi Bell Gease, Journal Staff WriterRAPID CITY ? A Pennsylvania couple and their 24-year-old son have been charged with felony grand theft in connection with three motorcycles stolen from the Sturgis motorcycle rally.

Good timing and quick response from people at Black Hills Harley-Davidson at Rapid City Monday led police to arrest David L. and Linda R. Gebert and their son, Justin Gebert, all of Sarver, Pa. Police also recovered three stolen Harley-Davidson motorcycles valued at a total of $81,000.

According to court documents, a Minnesota man parked his $26,000 Harley-Davidson Road King motorcycle at the Rapid City Harley dealership Monday afternoon and went to buy T-shirts. When he returned, the bike was gone. The owner said he looked up to see David Gebert riding his motorcycle toward a parking lot exit, and reportedly shouted to security guards at the exit to stop the bike.

Gebert later told police the whole thing had been a misunderstanding. He said a “short, fat guy” had asked him to move the motorcycle, and that it was running when he got on it.

However, investigators found chips and scratch marks on the motorcycle that indicated the lock had been broken with channel lock pliers. Pliers were later found in the Geberts’ possession, along with two-way radios.

David Gebert, 56, and Linda Gebert, 55, were each carrying a loaded .380 pistol, and police said a loaded .22 caliber pistol with a silencer device on it was found in the couple’s 2001 Harley-Davidson Ultra Classic motorcycle. Police also found a lock-pick kit in David Gebert’s sock.

According to police reports, Linda Gebert was carrying a key to a motor home parked at Deerview Campground near Sturgis.

When police searched the motor home, they found the key to a trailer containing two Harley-Davidson motorcycles that had been reported stolen from Sturgis on Friday and Monday.

Police said Linda Gebert was also carrying a cell phone labeled with the name of a Wisconsin woman who had reported her motorcycle stolen from Sturgis on Monday. The cell phone was stolen with the motorcycle.

The cycles recovered from the Geberts’ trailer included a 2003 Harley-Davidson Fat Boy worth $30,000 and a 2003 Harley-Davidson Heritage Classic valued at $25,000.

Justin Gebert arrived while police were searching the campsite.

Investigators later determined that his motorcycle included a front-end assembly that was reported stolen from Daytona Beach during Biketoberfest 2001. Justin Gebert was charged in Meade County on Tuesday with three counts of grand theft by possessing or receiving stolen property.

David and Linda Gebert made their initial court appearances in 7th Circuit Court in Rapid City on Tuesday as well.

David Gebert is charged with grand theft, committing a felony while in possession of a firearm, and misdemeanor charges of carrying a pistol without a license and carrying a firearm on a motorcycle. Linda Gebert was charged with grand theft and a misdemeanor charge of carrying a pistol without a license.

Grand theft carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison and a $10,000 fine, and committing a felony with a firearm is punishable by 25 years in prison and a $25,000 fine upon conviction.

Investigators seized a Ford motor home and a Haulmark trailer, along with the elder Geberts’ motorcycle.

Officials said the investigation is ongoing, and additional charges may be pending.

The Motorcycle Theft Task Force is in charge of the investigation with help from the Sturgis Police Department and Meade County Sheriff’s Office.

The task force, which has worked at the Sturgis rally for several years, is a team of special investigators trained and experienced in dealing with stolen-motorcycle cases.

The team is headed by Sgt. Bob Kenney of the Connecticut State Police, who is considered an international expert in Harley-Davidson motorcycle identification and vehicle-theft investigation.

HOW TO DRIVE IN DALLAS, BEWARE–

First you must learn to pronounce the city name. It is DAL-LUS, or DAA-LIS depending on if you live inside or outside LBJ Freeway. Next, if your Mapsco is more than a few weeks old, throw it out and buy a new one. If you are in Denton County and your Mapsco is one day old, then it is already obsolete.

Forget the traffic rules you learned in Driver’s Ed or elsewhere. Dallas has its own version of traffic rules… “Hold on and pray”. There is no such thing as a dangerous high-speed chase in Dallas. We all drive like that. We have to do that everyday to get to work on time.

All directions start with, “Get on Beltline Road”…which has no beginning and no end. (It REALLY DOESN’T!!!) The morning rush hour is from 6 to 10 AM. The evening rush hour is from 3 to 7 PM. Friday’s rush hour starts Thursday morning. If you actually stop at a yellow light, you will be rear-ended, cussed out, and possibly shot. When you are the first one on the starting line at a red light, count to five when the light turns green before going, to avoid crashing into all of the drivers running the red light in the cross-traffic lane.

Construction on Central Expressway is a way of life for us in the Metroplex and a permanent form of entertainment. We have had sooo much fun over the last 35 years with that little project that we have added the President George Bush Freeway and the High Five Interchange to the mix. All unexplained sights are explained by the phrase, “Oh, we’ve gone too far, and we’re in Fort Worth!” If someone actually has their turn signal on, it is probably a factory defect. Car horns are actually “Road Rage” indicators, and remember, it’s legal to be armed in Texas.

All old ladies with blue hair in Mercedes have the right of way. Period. And remember, it’s legal to be armed in Texas. Inwood Road, Plano Road, NW Highway, East Grand, Garland Road, Marsh Lane, Josey Lane, 15th Street, Preston Road… all mysteriously change names as you cross intersections(these are only a FEW examples). The perfect example is what is MOSTLY known as Plano Road. On the south end, it is known as Lake Highlands Drive. Cross Northwest Highway, and it becomes Plano Road, go about 8 miles more, and it is briefly Greenville Ave, Ave K, and Highway 5. It finally ends in Sherman.

If asking directions in Irving or Southeast Dallas, you must have knowledge of Spanish. If in central Richardson or on Harry Hines, Mandarin Chinese will be your best bet. If you are in Arlington, you had better know some Vietnamese. If you stop to ask directions on Gaston or Live Oak, you better be armed (and remember, it’s legal to be armed in Texas). A trip across town (east to west) will take a minimum of four hours, although many north/south freeways have unposted minimum speeds of 75. The minimum acceptable speed on the Dallas North Toll Road is 85. Anything less is considered downright sissy. The wrought iron on house windows near Oak Cliff and Fair Park is not ornamental!!

It is possible to be driving WEST in the NORTH-bound lane of EAST NORTHWEST Highway. Don’t let this confuse you. The North Dallas Tollway is our daily version of NASCAR. It also ends in Sherman. LBJ Freeway is called “The Death Trap” for two very good reasons: “death” and “trap.”

If it’s 100 degrees, Thanksgiving must be the very next weekend. If it’s 10 degrees and sleeting/snowing, the Fort Worth Stock Show is going on. If it has rained 6 inches in the last hour, and it is springtime, the Byron Nelson Golf Classic is in the second round. If it is autumn, then the State Fair is in full swing. Can’t you just smell those Corny Dogs and Turkey Legs? If you go to the Fair, splurge and pay the $8.00 to park INSIDE Fair Park. Parking elsewhere could cost up to $2500 for damages, towing fees, parking tickets, etc. If some guy with a flag tries to get you to park in his yard, run over him. Any amusement parks, stadiums, arenas, race tracks, airports, etc., are conveniently located as far away from EVERYTHING as possible so as to allow for ample parking on grassy areas.

Final Warning: Don’t Mess With Texas Drivers.It’s legal to be armed in Texas.

THE SILENT TREATMENT–A man and his wife were having some problems at home and weregiving each other the silent treatment. The next week the man realizedthat he would need his wife to wake him at 5:00 AM for an early morningbusiness flight to Chicago. Not wanting to be the first to break thesilence (AND LOSE), he wrote on a piece of paper, “Please wake meat 5:00 AM.”

The next morning the man woke up, only to discover it was 9:00 AMand that he had missed his flight. Furious, he was about to go and seewhy his wife hadn’t awakened him when he noticed a piece of paper bythe bed. The paper said, “It is 5:00 AM. Wake up.”

Men simply are not equipped for these kinds of contests.

THAT’S ALL FOLKS–I received a call today from a pal across town. He needs welding, so were loading the truck with the Bikernet Millermatic MIG machine and heading out after launching the news.

I wish I knew what I was doing, but I don’t. Should be in Sturgis or heading to Milwaukee. Instead I’ll sharpen my knife on a rock and have a drink of Tullamore Dew, thanks to Rigid Frame Richard.

RUN FOR BREATH RECEIVES AWARD– The 5th Annual Run For Breath “In Memory of Justin Pullin” was held Sunday, July 27. We had 84 entries in the bike show and all were top quality bikes. The best of show award went to Christian Gordon who entered his rigid frame Sportster.

At the end of the day we had raised $7,000.00 for the American Lung Association’s Camp Air Care for kids who have asthma.

Mike Pullin, the founder, and the lovely Meanest were awarded the American Lung Association’s Top Sponsor and Contributor award.

Mike and Meanest have ordered Bandit to create another metal sculpture, Best of Show award for next year. Stay tuned.

BIKERNET CARIBBEAN REPORT–FROM STURGIS–You thought I was going to miss this week…NOT !As you might know we are in Sturgis and I’m going to try cover some kind of play by play. Last night we stopped to say hi to our friends at Klock Works and visit the Kongo Club, then we headed into the Black Hills. Before I forget, I had a chance to see one of the coolest chops I’ve seen in a while. It will be featured soon, just hang on.

As you know we drove from Florida, there I had a chance to check out the new Discovery bike from Choppers Inc. It’s wicked! I will post some photos in the future of all this amazing bikes, soon, very soon.

The weather is cooperating, warm, verging into hot days with cool nights. The cops are not out, yet, and it’s fairly quiet. Chaos awaits.I rode my new chop for 200 miles or so. The only problem was a cracked top motor mount and the left grip loosening. Other than that, it was cherry.

The guys from Hawaii called, and they are ok, someplace in Wyoming and will show up tomorrow.

Crazy Horse is on her way. I guess all our friends are making way to get here. The real action won’t get rolling ’till Monday or so.Oh well, enough ranting (drove 38 hours straight). I’ll keep this report going daily in Your Shot.

ALL ABOUT COPS–by Jim Smith. In 1994, a study was conducted by the Arlington, Texas policedepartment in conjunction with the Southwestern Law Enforcement Institute of theSouthwest Legal Foundation.

This study surveyed 123 police departments nationwide and found,among other things, that only 19 percent of departments have a policy of firingofficers who are repeatedly domestically violent, and the majority of suchcases are handled within the department, instead of being referred to theDA’s office.

This is called obstruction of justice, in case you were wondering. Or it would be anyway, except that if the police choose not toarrest themselves, who is going to get them in court?

Many police officers in urban areas have said that their mainobjective is to get through the day alive. They do work that is despised by a great many people willing tokill them on sight, and they just want to get home to their families. This gives all police officers common ground, so they band togetherto cover each other’s backs. It also sets up an “us vs. them” mentality and encourages officersto look the other way when they see one of their own breaking the law.

What this yields is a gang, and I’m not saying that simply foremotional impact or to be clever. There is a vast network of people statistically prone to violence,armed to the teeth, wearing their gang’s colors to make themselves instantlyvisually identifiable, ready to handle any and all situations with bruteforce on a moment’s notice, all covering each other’s misconduct so they can ensure their ownand each other’s safety. This is a gang by any definition.

Anyhow, these parts belong to Ed Sherrer of Virginia. He wanted hisflames to look like they were on fire. Can’t wait to see these withclearcoat.

Here’s a first peek at a hardtail whose tank was featured a few weeksback. Jim has the bike together and will ride it around Sturgis.It cranked right up, first touch of the key. I might need to sneak offwith that key when he’s napping.

Everyone who is heading for Sturgis, have a safe trip. Don’t speedout there. I’ve heard evil stories about thorough searchesand confiscated bikes. I’m outta here.
