Brian Willis and his friend Beverly Bender (Veterans) were on their way home from the Veterans Benefit on November 11, 2001 when they were hit from behind and ran over multiple times. Unfortunately Brian passed away at the age of 48 from his injures after suffering for 5 weeks. Beverly lost one leg, partial of her foot on the other and her right arm severely injured, she will spend the rest of her life in a wheelchair.

The person who destroyed their lives forever is on the run. We are all getting together to raise money for a bounty hunter to go get this individual and bring him to justice.

SOUTH DAKOTA RULES OF THE ROAD– Every motorcycle must be equipped with at least one but no more than two headlamps.

The handlebars of a motorcycle must be no higher than the shoulder height of the person operating the motorcycle.

All persons under the age of 18 must wear motorcycle safety helmets that are approved by the South Dakota Department of Transportation.

A person riding in an enclosed cab attached to a motorcycle does not have to wear a safety helmet.

A motorcycle operator must wear an eye protective device unless the motorcycle is equipped with a windscreen of sufficient height and design that protects the motorcycle operator. When headlights are required to be on, a motorcycle operator cannot wear protective eye devices that are tinted or shaded to reduce the light transmission of the device below 35 percent.

Motorcycles must have at least one tail lamp, which when lighted emits a red light visible for a distance of 500 feet.

Noise Limits: Every motorcycle must at all times be equipped with a muffler in good working order and in constant operation to prevent excessive or unusual noise.Source: AAA Motor Law Digest, 68th (2002) Edition.

HARLEY-DAVIDSON ANNOUNCES 2007 SECOND QUARTER RESULTS–Harley-Davidson today announced its results for the second quarter ended July 1, 2007. Revenue for the quarter was $1.62 billion compared to $1.38 billion in the year ago quarter, a 17.7 percent increase. Net income for the quarter was $290.5 million compared to $243.4 million, an increase of 19.3 percent over the second quarter of 2006. Second quarter diluted earnings per share were $1.14, a 25.3 percent increase compared to last year’s $0.91. During the second quarter the Company repurchased $429.9 million of its common stock.

“During the second quarter, we shipped 95,117 Harley-Davidson motorcycles to our dealers around the world, driving strong financial results,” said Jim Ziemer, Chief Executive Officer of Harley-Davidson. “On the retail side of the business, our dealers’ sales were down 1.2 percent worldwide during the quarter, with US dealers’ sales down 5.5 percent and international retail sales growing at double digit rates. Retail sales in every major country in Europe were up during the quarter, resulting in 13.7 percent growth in total European sales. Japan, Canada, and all other international markets grew at a combined rate of 13.4 percent,” Ziemer said.

Revenue from Harley-Davidson motorcycles was $1.25 billion, an increase of $226.4 million or 22.0 percent versus the same period last year. Shipments of Harley-Davidson motorcycles totaled 95,117 units, an increase of 15,321 units or 19.2 percent compared to last year’s second quarter.

Parts and Genuine Motor Accessories, totaled $263.4 million, an increase of $11.7 million or 4.6 percent over the year-ago quarter. Revenue from General Merchandise, which consists of MotorClothes apparel and collectibles, totaled $72.7 million, an increase of $5.6 million or 8.4 percent over the year-ago quarter.

Gross margin for the second quarter of 2007 was 37.4 percent of revenue compared to 37.5 percent for the second quarter last year. Second quarter operating margin increased to 23.8 percent from 23.6 percent in the second quarter of 2006.

During the second quarter, worldwide retail sales of Harley-Davidson motorcycles decreased 1.2 percent compared to the prior year second quarter. In the US, retail sales of Harley-Davidson motorcycles decreased 5.5 percent for the quarter.Retail sales of Harley-Davidson motorcycles grew 13.6 percent in international markets during the second quarter of 2007 compared to the second quarter of 2006. Second quarter retail sales increased 13.7 percent in Europe; Canada was up 9.9 percent; and Japan was up 5.2 percent. All other international markets combined were up 27.4 percent.

PROOF THAT BIKERNET ISN’T PERFECT–Bandit, I hope you’re finding time for fun with all the projects you have going on. I subscribed to Bikernet a while ago and I love the site. I especially enjoy the news and the Sunday Post. When I sent in my subscription, I paid an extra $10.00 for one of your books. So far, the book has never arrived. I don’t know if it got lost on your end or in the post office, but I thought you should know.

Thanks for all of your hard work keeping the site current and well worth reading. I hope your noise study creates some awareness out there. We really have a fight going on here in Denver with the new noise law. We also got hit with a new helmet law this year after some underhanded dealing in the legislative committees. The nannies are after us and we seem to be afraid to hurt their feelings.

MOTORCYCLE REPAIR SHOP OWNER CHARGED WITH THEFT–The owner of a motorcycle shop in Frankford was arrested Tuesday after failing to provide services that his customers had paid for, Delaware State Police said today.

William T. Rementer, 36, of the 8000 block of Littleton Road, Willards, Md., was charged with two counts of felony theft.

Department spokesman Cpl. John Barnett Jr. said a 54-year-old Atlantic, Va., man brought his 1981 Harley-Davidson FLT motorcycle to Rementer’s repair shop, East Coast Choppers, in August 2006.

He paid Rementer $1,300 to restore the bike, but as of June 15, Rementer had failed to return the bike or the money, Barnett said. On July 2, the victim recovered the motorcycle from the shop but found it to be running out of order and missing numerous parts.

During the investigation, Barnett said, a 43-year-old Millsboro man reported he had paid Rementer $2,500 for a new rear wheel and chrome disc brakes in February, but again, Rementer failed to provide the services or produce a refund.

Rementer was released on $3,000 unsecured bond, Barnett said.

Delaware State Police asking anyone who believes they were a victim of theft by East Coast Choppers to call the Financial Crimes unit at 856-5850.

BANDIT DELIVERS RUN FOR BREATH BEST OF SHOW AWARD–I just got the RFB Best of Show Award. As usual it is too cool! Whoever wins it, I am sure will be very proud to own it. People always talk about the past years awards you have done. I know I don’t have to say it, but I appreciate it very much.

OUTLAWS DELIVER MESSAGE TO CITY–Monday night’s meeting of the Hudson City Council had more drama than usual when members of the Outlaws Motorcycle Club paid a visit to City Hall. The Outlaws are upset with rules aimed at keeping them away from Hudson that have been imposed on Dibbo’s nightclub. Dibbo’s had to agree to the rules as a condition for keeping its liquor license.

Shortly before the City Council meeting was set to begin at 6:45 p.m., members of the motorcycle club reportedly showed up at Dibbo’s wearing their “colors” and asked to be served drinks. Their presence violated one of the conditions of an agreement Dibbo’s management signed with the city in order to keep its liquor license – that anyone wearing gang colors won’t be allowed on the premises.

After being refused service, the group of around 15 Outlaws gathered in the City Hall parking lot and then filed into the crowded council chamber after the meeting had begun. There was already a larger-than-usual audience on hand.

Residents of Aldrich Avenue were there to express their opinions about a planned storm sewer and street project in their neighborhood. Landowners, professionals and businesspeople with an interest in a petition for the city to annex 54 acres from the town of Hudson also were on hand.

Members of the St. Croix Valley Riders, a local motorcyclists’ rights organization, also unhappy with the Dibbo’s rules, were in attendance, too. The Outlaws’ leader walked in at the start of a public hearing on the Aldrich Avenue project and took a seat next to the podium from which members of the audience and city staffer address the City Council. The tall, burly man wore a beret, sunglasses and a vest with a patch on it showing a hand raised in a one-finger salute. The Outlaw sat patiently while residents expressed opinions – pro and con – about the Aldrich Avenue project. He appeared to nod his head in agreement with a speaker at one point.

After the public hearings on the Aldrich Avenue project and several amendments to the zoning code related to the downtown, Mayor Jack Breault invited anyone in the audience with a comment or suggestion for the council to speak.

Hudson resident Dave Anderson, a member of the St. Croix Valley Riders, was the first to come to the podium. He said the rules that were aimed at the Outlaws also had affected his organization, which could no longer hold its meetings at Dibbo’s. “We feel this discriminates against all motorcycle riders,” he said. Anderson was followed by Kim Heinemann, president of the Hudson Area Chamber of Commerce, who gave a rundown of coming Chamber events, including a Girls Night Out bike ride event planned for Sept. 7-8. Heinemann, apparently addressing the motorcyclists ringing the back walls of the council chamber, somewhat nervously added that it was a bicycle ride, and said, “Sorry.” The clarification brought a ripple of laughter from the audience.

Then the Outlaw leader stood to address the council. “Jimmy,” he replied in a gravelly voice when Mayor Breault asked him to identify himself. Jimmy said he had been at Dibbo’s on the night of April 14 when, according to Police Chief Andrew Smith, 30 to 40 members of the Outlaws took control of the nightclub. “Nobody got hit. Nobody got hurt,” Jimmy said. “?We didn’t come into town to hurt anybody. We came into town to have some fun.” The Outlaws leader said the rules the city has forced Dibbo’s to enforce are unconstitutional and that the motorcycle club would challenge them. “We will go there. And we will get arrested. And we will challenge you in court and win,” he said, claiming that a court has ruled that similar regulations imposed on Milwaukee establishments are illegal.

The Outlaws leader lectured council members that they took an oath of office to uphold the constitution. Instead, they ordered a local business to violate it, he said. Motorcycle engines were heard rumbling past City Hall after Jimmy had his say, and the Outlaws left the meeting.

THAT’S A NEWS, DAMNIT–Life is so strange. We struggle from time to time, like many of the shops out there. Guys working hard, and when folks don’t pay, it strangles them.

We experienced the blues last week, waiting for checks and parts. Then the stars aligned and we jumped back on track. I gotta say that most folks who drifted behind in Bikernet payments in the past, ultimately caught up and another company did it again this week. It makes ya feel good when men honor their words and make it up to you somehow.

So what’s coming up on Bikernet. More girls in the Cantina and a feature about a rare 1923 Ner-a-car recently discovered in bicycle collection auction by Rick Krost, of U.S. Choppers. He snapped it up and we have the images and history to prove it.

I have a Chica bike feature that will drive you wild. He promised me lunch if I ride to Huntington Beach to interview him. We have two new pieces of fiction and I need to get to work on them. I need to write another soap opera for the Cantina and post another World Run book chapter. Several techs are hanging out there including a Matt Hotch disappearing tank cross-over line and flush mounted gas cap. We’ve been waiting on a clutch install from Kirk Taylor and I need to hunt it down.

Here’s the seat Glen Priddle built for the Bikernet/Hot Bike Iraqi Vet Build bike, being built by Bikernet Staffer Johnny Humble in Texas for his brother. Many of the components came from Sucker Punch Sallys and J&P. He was going to turn it over in Sturgis, but his brother’s return was delayed. That scheduling change gave Johnny more time to work with Kent, from Lucky Devil Metal Works in Houston, to fix all of Johnny’s fuck-ups.

Bikernet is going to donate a front end to give this puppy class. It will ship out next week. The bike will be turned over to Johnny’s brother in Biketoberfest in October.That’s not all, but I misplaced my notes, so that’s all you get until tomorrow.

MOTORCYCLING ATTORNEY POINTS FINGER AT POLICE BIKES– A new law in Denver designed to curb motorcycle noise is being challenged in court by an attorney who claims police bikes may be violating the standards that went into effect less than three weeks ago. Attorney Wade Eldridge, himself a biker, also claims the noise ordinance is unconstitutionally vague.

The law “lends itself to arbitrary and discriminatory enforcement,” he said Tuesday. “The police can stop you for whatever reason.”Eldridge’s claim that police motorcycles may be exceeding allowable noise levels is disputed by police and city officials.

“I think that is a specious argument from an attorney who is trying to get his client off,” said Ellen Dumm, a spokeswoman for the city’s Department of Environmental Health. “He’s trying to find some fine hairs to split.”

The law, born out of a growing number of complaints about loud motorcycle noise in neighborhoods, generated criticism from the start, mostly from bikers who said they were being singled out because of a few rotten apples.

The law limits noise levels to 80 decibels from 25 feet and requires motorcyclists with bikes made after 1982 to have a muffler with an Environmental Protection Agency noise-certification stamp.

Eldridge represents a biker ticketed downtown.According to court documents, tests conducted by the city on police motorcycles found sound levels at redline of 81.3 decibels and 81.7 decibels. The accuracy of the sound meters the city used is within plus or minus .5 decibels, so police motorcycles may be in violation of the new law, Eldridge said.

VETERAN SPEAKS OUT– Two weeks ago, as I was starting my sixth month of duty in Iraq, I was forced to return to the USA for surgery for an injury I sustained prior to my deployment. With luck, I’ll return to Iraq to finish my tour.

I left Baghdad and a war that has every indication that we are winning, to return to a demoralized country much like the one I returned to in 1971 after my tour in Vietnam. Maybe it’s because I’ll turn 60 years old in just four months, but I’m tired.

I’m tired of spineless politicians, both Democrat and Republican who lack the courage, fortitude, and character to see these difficult tasks through.

I’m tired of the hypocrisy of politicians who want to rewrite history when the going gets tough.

I’m tired of the disingenuous clamor from those that claim they ‘Support the Troops’ by wanting them to ‘Cut and Run’ before victory is achieved.

I’m tired of a mainstream media that can only focus on car bombs and casualty reports because they are too afraid to leave the safety of their hotels to report on the courage and success our brave men and women are having on the battlefield.

I’m tired that so many Americans think you can rebuild a dictatorship into a democracy over night.

I’m tired that so many ignore the bravery of the Iraqi people to go to the voting booth and freely elect a Constitution and soon a permanent Parliament.

I’m tired of the so called ‘Elite Left’ that prolongs this war by giving aid and comfort to our enemy, just as they did during the Vietnam War.

I’m tired of antiwar protesters showing up at the funerals of our fallen soldiers. A family who’s loved ones gave their life in a just and noble cause, only to be cruelly tormented on the funeral day by cowardly protesters is beyond shameful.

I’m tired that when we find mass graves it is seldom reported by the press, but mistreat a prisoner and it is front page news. Mostly, I’m tired that the people of this great nation didn’t learn from history that there is no substitute for Victory.

AMES, IOWA EVENT ATTACK BY ZYLSTRA H-D BRINGS OUT THE DIRT–I can tell you first hand about Zylstra H-D. I worked for them for a short three months a few years back when they had their dealership in Cherokee, Iowa. That dealership closed last year due to lack of business.

First, they have no prices on motorcycles on the floor. They judge you by appearance prior to pricing or you must give them your credit history prior to pricing, most generally it is the second.

The employees had no discounts for anything in the store, which included clothing, bikes or service. Most generally, you waited like everyone else and purchased when there was a sale. In fact, I know of one guy who got fired because he could purchase the motorcycle he wanted cheaper at another dealership and did. The same way with parts and accessories, everything was always cheaper for employees somewhere else.

Along with that, each bike on the floor has a different price each day and most generally you could purchase a motorcycle anywhere else cheaper.

Robert Zylstra and his wife Marcia live up in the Spirit Lake, Iowa area, but farm a few thousand acres along with feeding livestock near Sibley where Robert grew up. Actually, Robert doesn’t farm, he has a staff that does that for him. They own the land they farm since most people won’t rent to them. I have never seen Robert dirty.

Zylstra will not support HOG or any organization that deals with motorcycles that I know of.Yes, I totally agree with you. DO NOT SUPPORT Zylstra’s while in Ames. Don’t even drive by their dealership! Gayle ‘gofer’ Henrich

MODERATELY LOUD PIPES SAVE LIVES–Rode in to work down here near Mayfair from WB on my yellow Wing (Big Bird) wearing a yellow jacket and yellow helmet and yellow side clearance lights, with the radio blasting. Had a large pickup almost change lanes (left to center) into me on Hwy 45 S near Good Hope. I was on the brakes and horn immediately. It was close. I don’t like to run the headlight modulator in heavy freeway traffic, but maybe I should. That still probably can’t break a driver’s concentration from talking, texting and playing games on the cell phone or PDA, and at the same time yelling at the kids to settle down and taking a sip of coffee and a bite from a donut.

I hear the arguments against loud pipes. However, more than ever, I agree that moderately LOUD PIPES SAVE LIVES. If anything, they p-off (oops, annoy) other drivers who then get away. (Kinda like B.O. to the ears.) I’ve noticed that cars avoid me when I ride my noisy Sportster, but seem attracted to Big Bird, like the bugs are attracted to its yellow surfaces when parked on a hot summer day.

Guess I’ll have to trade in Big Bird for an older, rat bike, HD bagger with loud pipes that people want to stay away from. And put signs on my bikes all around: WARNING – STUDENT DRIVER! Whatever it takes to stay unhurt, yet enjoy MCing.

Bikernet Independent Noise Study

AMES, IOWA CONTROVERSY CONTINUES–As you know, Vicki has been working her ass off, playing nice with the Council in Ames and now the Chief of Police. They were unbending in their demands for payment for every little extra, including $400 for lost revenue from parking meters because we were going to get the street blocked off to bike traffic only. I

t appears to me that this is a thinly veiled effort to extort money from Vicki (as Campaign Chair for Team Tommy) thinking we are making a lot of money on this and we’re a big political machine. Nothing could be further from the truth. We’re hard working, middle class bikers who want to help a friend who is running for President. We have no money and we’re not charging money for the event. It was designed as a free concert to entice bikers to come to Ames to involve themselves in the political process.

Tommy Thompson appeared before ABATE of Iowa’s Board of Directors earlier this month to explain why he would make a good president. I introduced him to the Board, and Dave Zien was there to support him. Tommy explained that whomever the bikers of Iowa supported in the Straw Poll, whether him or another candidate, it was important for the bikers to participate. Besides the learning and the experience, it would send a message to all the other candidates that bikers are important, have issues and questions and they vote.

It seems the Council and Chief of Police see us as just a financial boost to their little oligarchy.Vicki is concerned that notification of the cancellation of the party on Friday, August 10th, will cause people to not come to Ames, which will hurt Tommy and the whole political action idea. We still plan on having a party downtown. Vicki has talked to the owner of the micro brewery. and he is looking into a party in his bar and beer garden. Of course, he has to apply for a permit for this but he’s a local business and they may not want to step on him too hard.

We had to cancel Charlie but we still have the local band that was going to open for him. Needless to say, Charlie feels bad and that he’s caused us some problems. I assured him he didn’t and I feel bad that he’s not able to play at the event. He’ll stay at Buffalo Chip and make more money there anyway, but he wanted to be in Ames.

The larger problem that I see, as Bandit pointed out, is that the authorities are using bikers and bike clubs as a basis to extort money from organizers, promoters, etc. I believe and know there was no threat of clubs coming to Ames to cause trouble. Why would they? Some of the clubs mentioned are mid-west clubs, and the Chief said he was afraid because of Charlie’s ties to West Coast clubs. So what? This is a myth being perpetuated by law enforcement to justify the creation and continuation of “gang task force” and tactical units, gleaning tax dollars to conduct “war games” and surveillance activities.

Charlie has never had a problem at one of his concerts and he plays all over the country. Bandit is right, someone needs to challenge this blatant attempt to blackmail money from promoters so law enforcement can conduct training exercises, all the while painting a disturbing picture of outlaw bike clubs and scaring the crap out of local citizens. Once an event is over, and there is no trouble, they point to the fact that the added police presence was the reason, which is baloney. But they have to justify the cost to tax payers and promoters.

It’s job security and nothing more. Yes, tax payers are footing some of this too, I suspect, because there is grant money out there from the federal and local governments for police agencies to tap into for this purpose. My question is, has the Ames Police Department applied for any of this money already to help with the Straw Poll? If so, then trying to extort money from Vicki would be double dipping. People go to jail for this type of fraud all the time.

I would love to test this in court with a law suit, but I’m not convinced that the Straw Poll is the place to do this. How much more damage will this cause, or will it effect Tommy in a more negative way. I’m sure they’ll paint a picture of him as having friends in the outlaw culture or something like that.

NEW FICTION COMING TO BIKERNET–My name is PJ Hyland. I met you and your girlfriend at Rip’s BAD Ride last month. I told you how much I enjoyed your writing and your web site. Not long ago, as I was browsing through “Two Wheeled Tales,” I noticed a piece entitled “Hotel California” by Richard LaPlante. I had read, and been inspired by, “Detours,” his stream-of-consciousness narrative about his trip to Sturgis.

This was the first time I’d read an example of his fiction. I found it spell-binding. Congratulations and thank you for publishing an author of such repute.

I mentioned to you that I was writing for Thunder Press and that I had written some stream-of-consciousness “ride” stories, which didn’t fit their format. You magnanimously invited me to submit one to Bikernet.com. I’ve attached, “Velvet Zona Nights” (3,200 words). It’s a highly descriptive, philosophically slanted, and at times personally introspective, romp through the AZ Desert during this past year’s Laughlin Run. Heh, heh, does that last bit read like something off a book jacket?

HOLLISTER ROCKS AT 60– The 60th anniversary of the Hollister Rally was the largest one so far. July 6th, 7th and 8th brought more vendors, more bands, more builders and more entertainment than ever before.

Record crowds visited the rally to shop at California’s largest motorcycle marketplace. Friday was the largest in rally history and Saturday was almost twice the normal crowd. Rally week brought in 130,000 people to the sleepy little town of Hollister.

The new layout with the vendors on San Benito St (the Main st) was embraced by law enforcement and the city as well. This move has secured the rally for years to come.

The Baker Builders Square , sponsored by Baker Drivetrain was packed all weekend as fans check out over a dozen of the countries best bike builders and talked about new projects with them.

There were three stages with non-stop entertainment all weekend long. bands, boxing, fashion shows and the Ms. Hollister contest filled the 33 hours of the rally. If that wasn’t enough David Chaves International Trials superstar thrilled the crowds throughout the day in Vendor Village.

Sunday on the main stage there was a special surprise. Hollister dubbed the Birthplace of the American Biker Movement; it is home to some of the original riders of 1947. Six individuals, Peter Lomanto, Jess Bravo, Joe Bravo, Harry Prater, Babe and Johnny Lomanto from 77 to 90 years old gathered at this years Rally to celebrate its benchmark of 60 years. They represent one of the most extraordinary eras in our history. Following WWII there was an explosive energy of living and loving life. They shared stories of the tremendous freedom then? riding the hills, racing across open fields, sleeping under the stars amidst piles of hay.

Corbin’s Corner at 4th and San Benito was the hot location. Sunday morning this location hosted the Ego Tripp custom bike show. The bike show had a wide range of styles for all to enjoy. The Corbin factory was busier than ever and sales were an all time high. The official Harley Dealer House of Thunder from Morgan Hill also had a record weekend. They sold three bikes at the show on Saturday alone.

Hollister Police Chief Jeff Miller recapped by saying “this was the safest, smoothest and most organized rally to date.” Considering that this was the largest that’s quite a statement.

Horse Power also plans on adding more VIP bike parking for next year as it sold out early this year. All proceeds from the bike parking along with the other profits go to local youth programs and non-profits.

Horse Power Promotions pulled this together in six months. Now with 12 months before the 2008 rally Horse Power will be focusing on bringing back racing, hill climbs, concerts and spreading out to surrounding areas and country side. “The riding is great up here and there is no reason for people to ride all this way and just cruise around the town of Hollister,” stated Seth Doulton of Horse Power Promotions.

WOMAN HITS FIVE BIKERS–JANESVILLE, Wis. — A 29-year-old Illinois woman hit three motorcycle riders on Highway 14 east of Janesville on Saturday afternoon, sending five bikers to the hospital, according to authorities.

The Rock County Sheriff’s Department said the woman drifted into the oncoming lane of traffic at about 2:15 p.m.

Authoritites said that when the car finally came to a stop, it was in the middle of the road with a motorcycle imbedded in the front bumper.

Two men and three women and the car’s driver were transported to local hospitals.

One was still in critical condition on Sunday.

“We’re still checking to see if there might have been a medical condition or something that contributed to this,” said Sgt. Kerry Schlittler of the Rock County Sheriff’s Department. “But right now, we’re thinking that maybe she was tired and passed out, or hadn’t eaten properly that day and may have passed out or temporarily lost consciousness.”

The motorcycles were part of a group of 22 bikes from Bellevue, Iowa, touring southern Wisconsin.

None of the bikers were wearing helmets, authorities said.

Schlittler said alcohol and speed weren’t factors in the crash. He said that he doesn’t expect criminal charges to be brought against the driver.

He said the driver was apparently moving from Madison to Woodstock, Ill., at the time of the crash.

WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP IN STURGIS THIS YEAR–The Fourth annual World Championship of Custom Bike Building will take place over August 5th-8th, with the awards ceremony commencing at 4pm on Tuesday August 7th.

Our new venue (and permanent home) is Champions Park on Lazelle Street, Sturgis, between 2nd and 3rd.

After killing time at the pistol range practicing my insurgent “good morning” tactics, I raced back to the office to check out what you had on the website today. RUCKER PERFORMANCE COLLABORATES WITHBRUCE ROSSMEYER TO BUILD NOSTALGIA MOTORCYCLES–FORT WORTH, TX (July 18, 2007) Rucker Performance announces another collaboration with Bruce Rossmeyer to build 30 Nostalgia motorcycles to be released in August.

Rucker Performance has started building 30 Nostalgia bikes according to the specifications of Elvis Presley?s original 1957 FL bike. Details include custom parts from Rucker Performance such as the primary housing, fuel tank, dash, oil tank, kickstart adapter and exhaust system. The Rucker Performance team has recreated a bike with authentic parts and accessories that uphold the integrity and style of Elvis Presley’s bike.

The hand-fabricated Rucker Performance primary housing is a hybrid of tin and cast aluminum, giving a new part an old look that is reminiscent of tin primaries from the 1950?s era. Additionally, the fuel tank is channeled, modified similarly to the old style two-piece tanks on FL models and redesigned for a FL style custom dash. Other details include a dimpled tank for the fuel shut off valve that has been added for aesthetic purposes only. Rucker Performance also has modified the oil tank to resemble the horseshoe-style oil tank with decorative 6-volt battery tops.

STURGIS READIES FOR MOTORCYCLE RALLY–STURGIS — Preparations for the 2007 Sturgis Motorcycle Rally will be similar to last year’s planning, according to law enforcement, military and state officers.Early predications indicate if gas prices stay steady, visitor numbers should be similar to the 2006 event.Law officers plan to work 12-hour shifts during the week, with two ambulance crews on call. Also, the Pennington County 40-member special response team will be on call.

Pepper Massey, interim rally director, said preparations are going smoothly.”I think there are certain things that are set in place that we’ll continue. Keeping up with trends, we always want to be an event that would entice people to come. We’re always looking for new and exciting things,” Massey said.

So far, 90 vendor permits have been sold through the city of Sturgis. The state reports 200 vendor permit sales.

NEWS FROM U.S. CHOPPERS–This Monday, U.S. Choppers issued a one time only sale to commemorate their swap to major manufacturer Paughco. The sales flyer went out to U.S. Chopper’s e-mail list only. The deal was good on 20 frames.

Reportedly 7 frames were gone before the sale was even announced (going to big name builders), and rumor has it that the remaining 13 frames are slated to go to one buyer. The terms of the deal are still on the table and should be finalized soon. If this deal goes through, the sale will be over. This would make for an astounding 20 frame sale in less than 3 days. Who says the industry is flat on it’s back?

Rick Krost is quoted as saying, “With Paughco making our frames, we can afford scalability, very short lead times, and a quality product every time. With this alliance our clients and builders don’t have to worry about quality issues or factory support. KOPP AIMS TO GRAB ANOTHER GUN; LOOKING TO WIN THIRD CONSECUTIVE GREENVILLE EVENT– MILWAUKEE (July 18, 2007) – Oddly enough, Joe Kopp is happy being in ninth place of the AMA Flat Track Twins championship point standings. He said he could win more easily because of his current position.

No, the Wrecking Crew rider of the Team Latus/Screamin’ Eagle Harley-Davidson isn’t kidding.

The 2000 AMA Grand National champion is the two-time defending winner of this weekend’s Twins race at Darke County Fairgrounds in Greenville, Ohio and he’s aiming to get another gun.

“It’s the Annie Oakley Shootout this weekend and the trophy is a great gun,” Kopp said. “I would love to earn a third trophy from this event. It’s a cushion track that rewards great starts and I love surfaces like that.

“I also have the benefit of not being in a pressure situation when it comes to the points chase. We’ve struggled a bit lately but last week’s third place finish has helped restore our confidence and I know this team is capable of winning. We’re going to climb back up the points and hopefully win along the way.”

Some of the riders that might get in his way are Screamin’ Eagle factory rider Kenny Coolbeth – the defending AMA Twins series champion and winner of two events so far this season – as well as Wrecking Crew riders Jared Mees and Bryan Smith.

Mees has earned three wins on his Blue Springs/Screamin’ Eagle Harley-Davidson and currently leading the point standings. Smith has his Pat Moroney’s/Screamin’ Eagle Harley-Davidson into fourth place of the standings.

Coolbeth finished in seventh place last year at Greenville but is more confident going into the cushion track after his second place finish at Lima, Ohio’s cushion surface earlier this season.

“We struggled with Greenville last year but we’ve worked a few things out for the setup we need for that kind of track,” Coolbeth said. “I owe that to my team. We’re working real well together and we’re in good shape going into this race. We’ve been consistent all season and we’ve already done better than last year when it comes to the cushion track. We did some testing and I think that has been paying off.”

Coolbeth won last weekend’s race at Saluda, Va., and he was surrounded by his Wrecking Crew teammates. Mees finished second and Kopp was third, earning his first podium finish of the season.

“It was so important finishing on the podium last weekend considering we didn’t qualify the weekend before that (Joliet, Ill.),” Kopp said. “It gives me a lot of confidence coming into an event that I like. The entire crew is happy. Just finishing as well as we did last weekend almost felt like we had won the race. It’s just going to get better.”

One of Kopp’s mechanics, Larry Zumbrun, is a Greenville resident and just makes the race more interesting.

“Larry was born and raised there and it’s always nice to do well in front of his home crowd,” Kopp said. “We’re feeling much more confident now and we don’t have any pressure on us. So we’re aiming for another gun and we’re not going to worry about anything else.”

COOLBETH TACKLES SALUDA – WINS SECOND AMA FLAT TRACK EVENT OF THE SEASON–SALUDA, Va. (July 16, 2007) – Kenny Coolbeth kept the Screamin’ Eagle Harley-Davidson Wrecking Crew winning streak alive Sunday, winning the Joe Whetherly Memorial AMA Flat Track event at Virginia Motor Speedway.

Coolbeth earned his second win of the season and 11th of his career Saturday. The factory-sponsored Harley-Davidson rider has won two of the five 2007 events so far. Wrecking Crew teammate and current points leader Jared Mees has earned the other three wins on his Blue Springs Harley-Davidson and finished in second place at Saluda.

“Kenny and Jared are riding so well and they are keeping the points chase real close,” Harley-Davidson Racing Manager Anne Paluso said. “It seems like all of the teams are stepping up their game and the Wrecking Crew riders are right there every race, trying to compete for every spot on the podium.”

The Wrecking Crew swept the podium for the second time this season (Lima, Ohio) as Joe Kopp and the Team Latus Harley-Davidson team earned third place – his first podium of the season. Wrecking Crew rider Bryan Smith and the Pat Moroney’s Harley-Davidson team finished seventh.

Coolbeth – the defending AMA Flat Track champion – is currently second in the point standings, nine points behind Mees.

“Jared won the last three races and it was our team’s goal to come in here and just finish ahead of him to keep the points close,” Coolbeth said. “I would rather be in the lead but I’m looking forward to the rest of the season. We just need to keep doing what we’ve been doing and stay as close to the front as possible.”

Coolbeth said the race was more exciting because he and Mees traded first and second positions throughout the night.

“It seemed like we passed each other back and forth all race long,” Coolbeth said. “I really wanted to work on my starts and get a better jump at the starting line. That happened and I just kept my head down all night long after that.”

Mees has not finished off the podium so far this season.

“I’m happy with the second place finish especially considering where we qualified (seventh),” Mees said. “We tried a few different things and we finally got caught up and put together a competitive setup for the main event. My team did a great job giving me a bike that could put in great laps and let me catch up.

“It would have been nice to make it four (wins) in a row because Kenny is so competitive and we want to earn as many points as possible. But we finished right next to him and that helps us keep this points battle going.”

Kopp, the 2000 AMA Grand National champion, was pleased to be back in contention for a race victory just a week following his first DNQ of the season.

“It was so important to get back to a race and finish in the top five,” Kopp said. “I was really feeling down in the dumps last week. I felt like I had let everyone down by not qualifying. But all of my sponsors and teammates were supportive and told me they backed me 110 percent. That really helped me work toward a good showing in Saluda.

“We had a great bike from the start and we didn’t have to change much beyond fuel and tires. That let me focus on riding and finishing well. It was great to be back on the podium.”

The next AMA Flat Track Twins race will be held at the Darke County Fairgrounds in Greenville, Ohio on July 21. Coolbeth no doubt will be aiming to keep Mees behind him.

SCREAMIN’ EAGLE NHRA DRAG RACING TEAM LEAVES MILE-HIGH NATIONALS READY TO GET BACK TO SEA-LEVEL TRACKS–DENVER (July 16, 2007) – Eddie Krawiec earned a round victory Sunday on his Screamin’ Eagle/Vance & Hines Harley-Davidson V-Rod at the Mopar Mile-High NHRA Nationals at Denver’s Bandimere Speedway.

Teammate Andrew Hines posted his third opening round loss of the season at the only altitude track on the NHRA POWERade pro circuit. The loss kept Hines from successfully defending his 2006 victory here.

The 24-year-old three-time defending NHRA champion said it didn’t matter where he lost – a loss is frustrating no matter where the location.

“It doesn’t matter if I’m at the U.S. Nationals or any other race on the circuit,” Hines said. “It’s always disappointing if you go out early. I treat them all the same and want to win them all and it’s unfortunate we couldn’t defend last year’s win.”

Krawiec beat Peggy Llewellyn in the first round. Krawiec turned in a 7.405-second pass at 181.57 seconds on his V-Rod while Llewellyn fouled at the starting line on her Karl & Kim Klement Racing Buell.

It was Krawiec’s fourth round win of the season and second consecutive second round appearance.

“With the way the point system is set up now, we’re always counting points,” Krawiec said. “Only the top eight riders get to run for the championship when Indy (the U.S. Nationals) rolls around and winning a round today helped us close the gap between us and that coveted eighth place.”

Hines posted a first round loss against Karen Stoffer and the Geico Suzuki team. Hines fouled at the starting line, losing to Stoffer for the second time this season.

Hines qualified in the No. 2 position with a 7.382 pass at 180.55 while Krawiec qualified eighth with a 7.405 at 182.28. It was the first time since the season opener in Gainesville, Fla., that Krawiec qualified in the top half of the 16-bike elimination field.

“I thought we both qualified well, not to mention how nice it was to be in the top half of the field and go into Sunday with lane choice,” Krawiec said. “I think both bikes were consistently making respectable passes in qualifying. This was my first time to race at such a high-altitude track and I’m still amazed at how difficult it is to run our bikes up here.”

Bandimere Speedway is the only high-altitude facility on the tour. While Krawiec knew the performance numbers would slow down, he never thought it would be more complicated than that.

“It’s so much harder to race at altitude than it is to race at sea-level,” Krawiec said. “Everything is so much slower, but the process of getting the bike down the track is still the same. Your routine is the same, but the process is slower and it breaks the rhythm that has been built up over the course of the first half of the season and it takes some getting used to. It was interesting and I’m glad we got a round win here under us today.”

Hines graduated from Trinidad High School and the Vance & Hines Motorsports shop was located in Southern Colorado for several years. The Screamin’ Eagle V-Rods were originally built at altitude. Still, Hines admits that he’s anxious to get back to sea level.

“The good thing is that Denver is over with for the year and we are going to be racing at sea-level tracks,” Hines said. “Denver is a great place and it’s where my drag racing career started, but it is difficult for the teams to prepare completely different setups.

“This is normally the time of year that our team really starts to come together, so I’m anxious to go to the next stop on the tour.”

Hines and Krawiec will next be joining the rest of the Pro Stock Motorcycle category at the FRAM Autolite NHRA Nationals at Infineon Raceway, July 27-29.

CHARLIE BRECHTEL HAS THE EVENT BLUES, OR HE’S A PUBLIC PIRATE IN DISQUISE–The Ames City Council met this morning to discuss what they see as problems with the Street Dance we are planning and the Charlie Brechtel Band. Due to the increasing concern on the part of the city and the extraordinary costs they expect Team Tommy to assume in order to comfort them, we (Forrest, Tony, Rich & I with the blessing of the campaign) have decided to pull the plug on the street dance and concentrate on the parade. Because there is no way to undo all the advertising we have done. I have spoken to Jamie at Olde Main Brewery downtown Ames. Jamie is willing to host the Ski Band. I have put Brian from Thunderbolt productions in touch with Jamie to work out details.

I am asking that Members of Team Tommy and those who are participating in Tommy’s Reunion ride not patronize Zyltra H-D in Ames and instead, go to Big Barn H-D in Des Moines if they want to visit a dealership since Zylstra is the one who raised a red flag to the city. I’ve never seen a motorcycle dealer sabotage a motorcycle event before. This has turned in a ridiculous amount of concern over nothing.

Bottom Line: There will still be a party downtown Ames however we will not be blocking off Main Street and we will not be hosting the Charlie Brechtel Band. I am asking the businesses in the Main Street Cultural District businesses (who have been wonderful and supportive) to remain open late to serve the people who are coming.

TERRIBLE CHARLIE BRECHTEL UNDER SCRUTINY– I am totally pissed at what has happened in Ames Iowa and the cancellation of the Street Party for Tommy Thompson. A lot of people have put a lot of work into this. Reports are still coming in but it appears that Zylstra Harley Davidson had objected to Charlie Brechtel performing at the event.

The police chief has also come up with demands of payment for extra officers that is totally unreasonable. Reports have him saying that Charlie has ties to motorcycle organizations and the police department was expecting trouble from these clubs and or organizations. If this type of action was done by anyone other than a police agency they would be arrested for extortion.

It should be noted that the Charlie Brechtel Band has performed all over the country at motorcycle and other charitable events and there has never been a problem. I am not sure at this time where the police chief is getting his information But it is sure bogus or possibly made up. It should be noted that the Secret Service has been aware of Street Party for months and they have not objected to it.

Motorcycle riders and the MROs have strived to get people involved in our democratic way of government by supporting candidates for office and now there seems to be a move to stop this or at least make it less effective. It makes one wonder if certain people in Ames are doing it because they support a different candidate and want to hurt Tommy’s chances at the Straw Vote. At this time I am going to ask people to not do business with Zylstra Harley Davidson and to also contact the Mayor and members of the City Council and ask them to explain their action.

TONY ON AMES, IOWA TEAM TOMMY EVENT–By now all or some of you may know about the turn of events at Ames, Iowa. The City Council decided to pull the permit for the street party we have been planning for the last three months. This was a result of our refusal to submit to blackmail and extortion tactics by the Council and the Chief of Police. We (Rogue and I) are looking further into this. We are also very concerned with the HD dealership there, Zylstra Harley-Davidson. We will encourage people to boycott this dealer and refrain from even driving by their location.

This is not so much a matter of security, costs, etc. as posed by the Council, as it is a matter of a very anti-biker attitude and perpetuation of the myth concocted by Hollywood concerning bikers and bike clubs. There is a deeper, more troubling concern I have that the City of Ames does not want bikers coming to town for the Straw Poll vote.

At least they are concerned that outlaw elements are coming there to cause trouble. What police intelligence (pardon the oxymoron) are they relying on for this conclusion?

My question is, what is the AMA or MRF prepared to do to answer this anti-biker sentiment? Is either organization ready to step forward and voice a concern to the City of Ames about the anti-biker attitude exhibited by certain Council members and the Chief of Police? Rogue and I are prepared to expose this bias through the motorcycle media industry and through email communications. We are both hoping that the AMA and MRF will come out opposed to the apparent lack of knowledge and inhospitable atmosphere toward bikers in Ames.

Keep in mind, this has been an event that was discussed and approved for some time. As recent as this week, we were informed that there was a growing concern for security, a need for extra police overtime duty, clean-up, payment for loss revenue of parking meters, and on and on.

Also, the H-D dealership has had direct input to the Council, depicting the band, the Charlie Brechtel Band, as an undesirable element of the program. Charlie is a friend of mine and I take that depiction very personal.

These concerns add up to no more than a thinly veiled attempt to extort money from us in order for us to proceed with our plans to participate in a political event. America is moving ever closer to a closed society governed by a heavy hand and steel toed Gestapo boots.

VALERIE THOMPSON 5-BALL RACING UPDATE–It’s been a while since my last update, and I’m glad to bring you up to speed. Hopefully you find this one worth the wait as it may be my most important one yet. The reality is I’ve traveled over 8,000 miles since the last time I wrote and my busy schedule delayed my Blog and also strained other commitments. With that being said, I learned more about being a full-time professional drag-racer and team owner. My recent lessons were taught from coast to coast and took course from St. Louis to Dallas to Atlanta to Alabama to Maryland to Indiana to Norwalk to Seattle for their respective events and recently home to Scottsdale.

Along the journey I became a better owner-pilot as VTR Team 2007 became a more rounded and experienced team. We’ve made significant changes along the way to our program and are much more prepared for 2008 and the exciting changes that will be announced once we’ve ironed out some details.

I’m now back at home in Arizona and arrived just in time for seasonal high temperatures in excess of 115 degrees. It’s too hot for testing so I decided to take some time off to enjoy training my new puppy “Reckon” as in the saying I learned down south “you recon?” My little sweetie is a 15 week old Maltese that I picked out while traveling to Washington for the “Kresto Pacific Nationals”. I’m also taking time to do local promotional events including a send off party at the famous “Billet Bar” in Scottsdale for “Dustin Cannon, 101st Airborne Division (Screaming Eagles)”. I can’t think of a better way to send a freedom fighter off to war than a large turn out from the biker community and a special thanks to bar owner Myron for making it so memorable.

It’s about mid-season of the 2007 AHDRA race season and VTR Team 2007 is currently in 4th place in the National standings and in 2nd place in the Western division. Coming up on August 10th we return to Bristol, Tennessee for the “S&S Cycle Thunder in the Valley Nationals” where we hope to improve our standings and be reunited with some wonderful race fans.

After that it’s time for another attempt for another Land-Speed record and where Keith R. Ball from Bikernet.com and I will see his latest creation make it happen. Keith has worked passionately over the last year building “120-inch Panhead” which if all goes well, will become the worlds fastest “Panhead” at over 200 mph. The attempt will be on September 2-6th at the Bonneville Salt Flats. This incredible bike was built just for me and is longer, lower and much more aero-dynamic than Keith’s record holder “The Salt Shaker” we titled together with last year.

BIKERNET TRACTOR TRAILER DRIVER ACCIDENT–A tractor trailer driver lost control of his rig, plowed into an empty tollbooth on the Garden State Parkway and smashed it into hundreds of pieces.

While filling out the police and insurance reports for the damage he had caused, he noticed a crew of workers picking up each broken piece of the wrecked tollbooth and spreading some kind of creamy substance on it. Then they began fitting the pieces together. In less than twenty minutes, they had the entire tollbooth reconstructed and looking good as new.

Amazed at what he had witnessed, he asked the police officer, “What was that white stuff those men used to assemble all those pieces together?”

The police officer smiled and said, “Oh, that was tollgate booth paste.”

It gives me great pleasure to write this story. I had a problem with the title, because Dave accomplished so many things, but first he’s a rider who has logged over two million miles on a Harley-Davidson. That’s right, and over 900,000 on his current 1991 FXRP.

But hang on for just a couple more of his accolades. He was a Wisconsin Senator for 18 years, beginning in 1988, until just recently. He’s been inducted into every Motorcycle Hall of Fame in this country. Dave is a Purple Heart Vietnam veteran, a motorcycle freedom fighter until he dies and a genius. He’s one of the most passionate men I’ve ever met, and his fervor is directly centered on the following: Motorcycling, America, Veterans, God, family and Guns.

He’s a historian and an Iron Butt competitor who holds a record for 11 days and 11,000 miles at around 20 mph over the speed limit. He’s ridden 31,111 miles in 31 days, a record, and in 2003, logged 113,800 miles. I met Dave about 18 years ago when he started to run for office in Wisconsin. He’s stocky and wide. He looks to be of German descent and is built with three extra, high-voltage batteries. He was too energetic for me, bouncing off walls and he didn’t fit in suits (he wore engineer boots constantly). At the time, I couldn’t imagine a successful political career in his future, but his constituency recognized what was housed beneath the rugged exterior.

Dave is a man of pure integrity and a representative of what we all grasp for when it comes to describing the American spirit. Dave encompasses that which we all aspire to and pray for in our elected representatives. After 18 years in office, he doesn’t have a dime to his name and lives in a log cabin. He didn’t walk away with a myriad of high-dollar business connections, although he is a Republican. He didn’t slip out of office owning 40 apartment houses, 10 exotic cars and a yacht. He has a gun collection, his motorcycles, and his engine has faced the rebuild bench four times.

Here’s a guy who stretches and works out daily. He never stops for gas until he’s on reserve and gives himself a 10- minute window to refuel, check fasteners, note his mileage, and engage in sporadic or spontaneous thoughts. He takes a leak in a bottle and hits the road again. While riding he salutes veterans, EMTs and fireman. He’s hit four deer and was once pronounced dead by a Catholic priest. He makes eye contact while passing motorists, waves and gives kids the thumbs-up.

As a politician, against stern recommendations, he rode everywhere, to the Capitol, to the state senate, to meetings and fundraisers. Against the will of his party, he flew and still flies flags behind his motorcycle for Veterans, plus always an American flag. He eats while riding, loves our heritage, nostalgia, mystique and studies state of mind while carving through miles.

He doesn’t use synthetic oils but makes sure to change his lubricants every 2000-4000 miles. He’s not mechanical, but keeps a close watch over his tire pressure, exhaust pipe readings for fuel mixture, and axle nuts and bolts.

“I can’t be without a motorcycle for a day,” Dave said. He keeps a backup ’91 for repair and rebuild times. If you call Dave for lunch, he’ll ride, even if you are located two states away and it’s raining.

“I rode 1170 miles yesterday from Houston to Tucson,” he told me.

He wanders briskly around his bike at every gas stop, checking for loose fasteners or problems with the luggage straps.

He generally runs 40 mpg, sometimes as low as 35-38 into headwinds, and he’s usually cranking along at 100 mph. He loves the road, loves to clock those miles while in a therapeutic and meditative state of mind.

He runs his stock gas tank and has a spare 6-gallon unit on the back for 300-400 mile jams between gas stops. “I drink a lot of water and try to keep my body temp low,” Dave said. “I experienced heat strokes 12 times.”

While rolling he does crunches, puts his feet on the saddlebags to stretch, rides cross-handed and lets his armpits breathe. At gas stops he’ll do push-ups, squats and stretches.

Says Dave,“I jump on the bike totally refreshed.”

He’s a stout zealot and non-stop individual who doesn’t take a breath that’s not blessed with a myriad of passions for life. The last time I saw Dave, he was attending a National Coalition of Motorcyclist legislative conference. Two days earlier, he was strapped with a heart monitor at 57 years of age. He ripped it off, rode from Wisconsin to North Carolina, gave several speeches, pumped iron in the mornings and then rode to another event.

That’s an American Rider.

DEELEY BUELL RACERS ON ROAD AMERICA THUNDERBIKE PODIUM–ELKHART LAKE, Wis. (July 8, 2007) – Deeley H-D/Buell Canada/Ruthless Racing rider David Estok rode a Buell XB12R to a second-place finish in the American Sportbike Racing Association (ASRA) Pro Thunderbike National at Road America, adding to his lead in the Thunderbike National season points standings.

Brian Parriott on a BMW R1200RS was the fastest qualifier for the event, turning a lap of 2:28.147 on the four-mile, 14-turn Road America course. Parriott got a jump on the field at the start of the six-lap Thunderbike National. Nate Kern on another BMW R1200RS gave chase in second, with Estok in third and Hal’s H-D/Buell Hal’s Speed Shop rider Dan Bilansky in fourth, after starting from the back row. The top three spread out and finished in that order, with Parriott crossing the finish line 4.412 seconds ahead of Kern. However, Kern’s motorcycle failed a post-race inspection, and he was penalized three positions to fifth place, elevating Estok to second and his Deeley H-D/Buell Canada/Ruthless Racing teammate Darren James to third. Bilansky, the reigning Thunderbike national champion, faded to a seventh-place finish.

After five of eight ASRA Pro Thunderbike rounds, Estok leads the series with 147 points. James moves up to second with 120 points, while Bilansky drops from second to third with 119 points.

In Championship Cup Series (CCS) sprint racing on Saturday, Richie Morris Racing/Daytona Harley-Davidson/Buell rider Shawn Higbee rode a Buell XBRR to win the Expert SuperTwins event, while Joel Spaulding won Amateur GT Lights on a Buell XB12R.

In true Harley-Davidson style, there will be four days of non-stop activities planned throughout the city of Milwaukee. JUDGE ORDERS MAN NOT TO HAVE GIRLFRIEND–PETERBOROUGH, Ontario (AP) – A judge has ruled that a 24-year-old Canadian man is not allowed to have a girlfriend for the next three years.The ruling came after Steven Cranley pleaded guilty on Tuesday to several charges stemming from an assault on a former girlfriend.Cranley, who has been diagnosed with a dependent personality disorder, attacked his girlfriend in an argument after their breakup.He tried to prevent her from phoning the police by cutting her phone cord and punched and kicked her. He finally stabbed himself with a butcher knife when police did arrive, puncturing his aorta.

Doctors say Cranley has difficulty coping with rejection and runs a high risk to re-offend if he becomes involved in another intimate relationship.

Justice Rhys Morgan said Cranley “cannot form a romantic relationship of an intimate nature with a female person.”That is the only way I can see the protection of the public is in place until you get the counseling you need.”Cranley had already served 146 days in pre-trail custody, which Morgan said was enough jail time in this case.His lawyer says the no girlfriend order is the first of its kind that he has encountered.

COUNTY LINE GETS THEIR BEER LICENSE–STURGIS – After listening to nearly two hours of comment – some for, most against, and much of it impassioned – the Meade County Commission voted 5-0 to approve a beer license for a new Sturgis motorcycle-rally bar and campground near Bear Butte, a sacred site to many American Indians.

Entrepreneur Jay Allen, owner of the Broken Spoke Saloon, bought 600 acres of land north of the butte. He plans to open a new Broken Spoke Saloon and Sturgis County Line Campground on the site for the 2006 Sturgis motorcycle rally. Later, he hopes to open a concert venue as well.

But opposition to Allen’s plan has been intense. Diverse American Indian groups including the Sturgis-based Bear Butte International Alliance and the Northern Cheyenne Tribe of Montana oppose the project. The Meade County Commission received 633 letters on the subject. There was even an op-ed piece in the Los Angeles Times decrying Allen’s proposal.

Inside, the courtroom-turned commission room had space for only 70 people. Most of the crowd waited outside through the entire meeting.About 25 journalists crowded into the jury box-turned press gallery as Jay Allen made his case for approval of the beer license – and 20 opponents tried to persuade the commission to deny the license.Allen’s attorney, Bryce Flint, told the commission that the bar itself would be 2-1/2 miles north of the base of Bear Butte. He noted that other licensed biker bars and music venues, including one across the road from the Sturgis County Line property, are as close or nearly as close to Bear Butte.

Among those who spoke on Allen’s behalf was Sasha Mullins, who works for the Broken Spoke. She described her boss as a big-hearted person who wants to develop a harmonious environment for his employees and his patrons.

Flint noted that Allen’s beer-license request meets both legal tests set down by state law – character of the applicant and location of the establishment. He said Allen, who operates Broken Spoke Saloons at motorcycle events in four states, has been found to be a responsible businessman. Flint also said the neighboring landowners support his right as a landowner.

The Meade County Commission apparently agreed. There was little discussion among the five commissioners before the 5-0 vote. Dean Wink was the only commissioner who spoke to the crowd.The Sturgis County Line proposal also apparently renewed some of the debate in Meade County about the Sturgis motorcycle rally. Jesse Levin, a non-Indian rancher who lives 30 miles east of Sturgis, told the commissioners that she is disgusted by the trash, dust and drunken bikers that she has seen at her place.

HOLLISTER SPECIAL REPORT–Man the weather was nice and what a show. I took in the sites and brought my 17yr old son. He especially enjoyed hanging out at Paines, talking with the HA’s, while I had a cool one inside. Too funny, cause he also asked later, “Who’s that guy with the piece in his throat.” Needless to say he had to have a picture, shake his hand, buy a shirt, stickers and now wants a Harley.

Of course he insisted we go back and have lunch and spied the young waitress, same age. Last time I take him. We had a great time, hope you did too! I hear San Juan Batista up the road was the place to be. I went to the school with the Mayor. Next year I’m checking it out.

MAJOR CONDOM MANUFACTURER LOOKING FOR TEST SUBJECTS–MELBOURNE, Australia – A major condom brand said Friday it expected thousands of applicants for a new unpaid job on offer – condom tester.

Durex said 200 adult Australians – men and women – are wanted to test a range of its condoms.

While the successful applicants will not be paid, each will receive a pack of Durex sex products, a chance to win 1,000 Australian dollars ($857 U.S.), plus professional prestige, the company said in a statement.

“Who wouldn’t want to have a chance with an actual authorized professional?” Durex marketing manager Sam White asked.

“Durex is expecting thousands of applicants,” the statement said.

Hopefuls must explain in their applications why they would make “expert” condom testers.

How they test the condoms is not specified, but testers must provide honest feedback about how they find the products.

No deadline is set for evaluating a range of four condoms and other sex products.

HARLEY WOMEN AND MT. RUSHMORE–New this year during the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally this August 4-11, Harley-Davidson will feature new activities and events geared towards women at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center. The Women’s Booth inside the Civic Center will feature a new display showing the history and connection between Harley-Davidson and women riders through the years. Aug. 9, is the inaugural H-D Sturgis Women’s Day featuring an entire day of events for women riders and non-riders such as a demonstration on how to lift a dropped bike and how to customize a motorcycle to fit a rider’s ergonomic needs.

From 8-9 a.m., women-only demo rides will be available with complimentary coffee and morning snacks. Special seminars will be held indoors at the women’s booth that day, including a special functional MotorClothes preview. Renowned female moto-journalist Genevieve Schmitt is also slated to be at the booth at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.

4-VALVE HEADS SEEM TO KEEP TRYING TO COME BACK–This style head was designed by Jim Fueling many years ago and I had the opportunity to do some Research and Development on them.I did numerous tech articles and was employed by two aftermarket motorcycle manufactures that used them on their motorcycles.

While the design of multiple valves did allow more air and fuel into the combustion chamber and the compression ratio was increased providing more performance there was always numerous problems with the package mostly in the rockerbox area.

While the aftermarket manufactures were using this style head the Rockwell of the valves were changed as well as the swivel feet, rockerarm shims and other parts. There were numerous problems with these changes.

The aftermarket companies went out of business and though there are many differences of opinion why the 4 Valve Head was felt by many to be one of the reasons.Officers of the companies had differences of opinion on how the head and rockerbox assemblies should be built. This resulted in them becoming very unreliable.

I do believe the heads when assembled correctly and using the correct parts do work well for certain engines. I did do a article on How To Accurately Build a 4 Valve Engine which was a use of words. I was employed at American Quantum at the time and they were trying to develop a 96 cubic inch engine.

I went to Accurate engineering in Dothan Alabama and with the help of Berry Wardlaw the owner built a 96 cubic inch 4 valve engine and did the article.

I might add that that engine is still running today which is a lot more than I can say for most of Quantum’s engines.I would suggest that anyone considering these heads look into them very carefully. Ask people who have used them and find out their opinion before buying.

HARLEY PLANS FOR 105TH BIRTHDAY PARTY–Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, WI – Continuing its tradition of throwing itself a big birthday bash every five years, Harley-Davidson will hold a four-day celebration next summer to honor 105 years of building motorcycles.

The 105 reunion rides to Milwaukee will start as soon as Aug. 17, 2008. Riders led by Harley officials will travel from 80 starting points to converge at the following 25 cities for official routes to Milwaukee. All 25 of those rides are scheduled to arrive at Milwaukee on Aug. 27, 2008.The 25 cities are: Seattle; Bend, Ore.; San Francisco; Glendale, Calif.; San Diego; St. George, Utah ; McAllen, Texas; Odessa, Texas; San Antonio; New Orleans; Mobile, Ala.; Fort Myers, Fla.; Miami; Savannah, Ga.; Myrtle Beach, S.C.; Raleigh, N.C.; Richmond, Va.; Washington, D.C.; Atlantic City, N.J.; New York City; Providence, R.I.; Boston; Concord, N.H.; Bangor, Maine; and Port Huron, Mich.The 105th anniversary party, scheduled for Aug. 28-31, 2008, will be more similar to the fest in 1998 than the big 100th anniversary celebration in 2003 that culminated with a massive party on Milwaukee’s lakefront and an Elton John concert that played to, well, mixed reviews.

At the company’s annual meeting this spring, Harley Chief Executive Jim Ziemer already promised – to cheers – that Elton John won’t be back next year.

What will be new in 2008: the first chance for enthusiasts from around the country to check out the new Harley-Davidson Museum, which is under construction on W. Canal St. in the Menomonee River valley.The anniversary celebration will kick off at 105 official starting points around the country, with rides heading toward Milwaukee on 25 major routes, the company announced Monday.

It will be “the biggest anniversary ride in company history,” Harley-Davidson spokesman Bob Klein said.The first ride will begin on Aug. 17, and all the rides will finish in Milwaukee on Aug. 27. The next day, the Harley Owners Group will celebrate its 25th anniversary with a gathering at Miller Park featuring a private concert with “headline entertainment.” HOG visitors will have a special hospitality area at the new Lakeshore State Park, and, as in previous Harley reunion years, there will be camping for members at the Washington County Fair Park in West Bend.

On Aug. 29 and 30, the celebration shifts to Milwaukee’s lakefront, including Maier Festival Park, home to a two-day event featuring music and entertainment. Discovery World will also feature a Harley exhibit.

At the Harley museum, anyone can come and tour the grounds, but admission to the museum itself will be limited.The museum will be open, but anticipating a crush of visitors, Harley will hold a lottery for museum admission from those who have paid in advance for tickets to other anniversary events.

The drawing system is similar to one for the 100th anniversary parade through Milwaukee that prevented some of the big traffic tie-ups seen during the 1998 parade.Harley has said the museum is scheduled to open in 2008 but hasn’t set a date for the grand opening. In any case, Klein said, the museum will be ready for the anniversary event.

Most anniversary events will be available to ticket holders only. Ticket packages will go on sale Aug. 15, with advance ticket sales for Harley Owners Group members planned for Aug. 1-15. Tickets will cost $60 plus $5 for shipping and handling, Klein said.

PREPARATIONS FOR STURGIS RUN–STURGIS — Preparations for the 2007 Sturgis Motorcycle Rally will be similar to last year’s planning, according to law enforcement, military and state officers.Early predications indicate if gas prices stay steady, visitor numbers should be similar to the 2006 event.

Law officers plan to work 12-hour shifts during the week, with two ambulance crews on call. Also, the Pennington County 40-member special response team will be on call.Pepper Massey, interim rally director, said preparations are going smoothly.

“I think there are certain things that are set in place that we’ll continue. Keeping up with trends, we always want to be an event that would entice people to come. We’re always looking for new and exciting things,” Massey said.

So far, 90 vendor permits have been sold through the city of Sturgis. The state reports 200 vendor permit sales.

RICHIE MORRIS RACING RIDES BUELL TO MOTO-ST CLASS VICTORY–ELKHART LAKE, Wis. (July 8, 2007) – The Richie Morris Racing/Daytona Harley-Davidson/Buell team won the Grand Sport Touring (GST) class with a Buell XB12R Firebolt at the Road America 500K, the fourth round of the SunTrust MOTO-ST Series.

High winds and temperatures in the mid-90s at the four-mile road course handed an additional challenge to riders in the three-hour MOTO-ST endurance event. But Richie Morris Racing riders Shawn Higbee and Dan Bilansky never faltered and enjoyed perfect pit work to lead the GST class from start to finish. The team completed 66 laps and finished 10th overall.

“Everything went smoothly for us today,” said Bilansky. “I was pretty busy with other races this weekend, and Shawn had the bike set up perfectly for us. The Richie Morris team did a great job on all of our stops, and we got great performance from our Pirelli tires. We knew there would be a lot of Buell fans at this race in Wisconsin, so we’re glad we could bring home a win for them.”

The James Gang Racing/Hoban Brothers Buell XB12R sponsored by Hal’s Speed Shop and Buell of Appleton and ridden by Paul James and Jeff Johnson completed 65 laps and took second place in GST (13th overall), as Johnson passed the Team Ducati Indianapolis entry with just four laps remaining and was 2.2 seconds ahead at the finish. Team Ducati Indianapolis was later disqualified for being below the minimum weight limit of 390 pounds, elevating the Touring Sports Ducati team of Peter Friedland, Brad Phillips and Frank Shockley to third place (14th overall).

After four of six MOTO-ST events, Richie Morris Racing Buell leads the GST team standings with 135 points, followed by Touring Sport Ducati with 122 points and James Gang Racing with 116 points.

The overall MOTO-ST win and first place in the Buell Motorcycle Company SuperSport Twins (SST) class went to Aprilla USA Team 2 and riders Ty Howard and Troy Green, who covered 68 laps on an Aprilla RSV1000 Tuono. Aprilla USA Team 2 leads the Buell Motorcycle Company SST team point standings with 134 points. Speed Werks.com riders Brian Kcraget and Scott Ryan captured the Sport Twins (ST) class win on a Suzuki SV650.

AMA PRAISES MOTORCYCLE INDUSTRY FOR FUNDING NEW MOTORCYCLE CRASH STUDY–The American Motorcyclist Association today praised the motorcycle industry for committing $2.8 million to make a new study into the causes of motorcycle crashes a reality.The motorcycle industry announced that it will provide the money through the Motorcycle Safety Foundation. The funding will go to the Oklahoma Transportation Center, which is an independent and respected research center at Oklahoma State University in Stillwater.

That industry money will be used as matching funding for a federal grant previously approved by Congress. The terms of the federal grant required the motorcycling community to come up with 50 percent of the funding for the study. The AMA has also committed funding to the project, and the association has been collecting additional money from riders through its Fuel the Fund program.

Since 1973, the Motorcycle Safety Foundation has set internationally recognized standards that promote the safety of motorcyclists with rider-education courses, operator licensing tests, and public-information programs. The MSF is a not-for-profit organization sponsored by BMW, BRP, Ducati, Harley-Davidson, Honda, Kawasaki, KTM, Piaggio, Suzuki, Triumph, Victory and Yamaha.

“This commitment by the motorcycle industry is a vital ingredient in getting the first comprehensive study of the causes of motorcycle crashes in more than 25 years,” said Ed Moreland, AMA vice president for government relations. “We recognize and appreciate the investment the motorcycle industry is making in its customers. Without this financial support on their part, we could not have taken advantage of the federal funding we worked so hard to secure.”

The last major study into the causes of motorcycle crashes was completed in 1980. That study provided a wealth of data that has been used by organizations and individual motorcyclists to help keep riders safer on the road. But the traffic environment has changed enormously in the decades since, prompting the AMA to begin campaigning for a new study several years ago. That process continues with the Fuel the Fund program, designed to finalize the budget for the study, which is expected to begin this fall.

CHARLOTTE RUN FOR BREATH UPDATE–Here at STEALTH BIKE WORKS we have been preparing for the 8th Annual Run For Breath “In Memory of Justin Pullin.” Everything seems to be in place. The RFB is Sunday July 22nd. Registration for the poker run is at SBW 10am –12 noon. Registration for the bike show is from 12 noon–2pm.

The proceeds from the RFB go to the American Lung Association and their Camp Air care. A week long camp for kids with asthma. All week the kids have a great time and are educated concerning asthma. The proceeds from the Run For Breath pays for every kid to attend. This means that kids that normally would not attend due to financial reasons have the opportunity to attend.

The Run For Breath demands a lot of time and effort from our volunteers, but it is worth it, just knowing how many kids we have helped. The poker run draws between 400-500 riders and the bike show draws around 100 bikes.

One of the most fun parts of the RFB is the bike show awards. They are all hand made from used or damaged bike parts. I will have pictures next week. The award that always gets the most attention is Mr. Bandits “Best of Show” award. We can’t wait to see what he has come up with this year!

HOLLISTER RALLY SAVED OR RUINED?– I’m thinking that 85% of the attendee’s go to see the spectacle of all the bikes lined up on the main street, with running bikes parading up and down that street. This year, was a joke in comparison. I didn’t see many bikes, and only heard a couple. What’s the point? I doubt I’ll return for another Hollister rally, if the layout stays the same. It Sucked!

All you have to do is, CHARGE every bike $10 or $15 (or $25 for the weekend) to park and ride in that main street area… problem solved.

SICKO’S SUCCESSFUL WEEKEND PUTS MY MOVIE IN 200 MORE CITIES TODAY–The results are in from the weekend — and they are amazing! “Sicko” more than doubled what industry insiders had predicted it would do for the weekend and, as I predicted, it did indeed have the second largest opening weekend in film history for a documentary (after F911). It also had the second highest per screen average for the weekend (after the Pixar animated film, “Ratatouille”). All this in spite of the fact, as Variety wrote, it’s not been a very good year for documentaries at the box office.

According to Variety, there have been 29 docs released in theaters in 2007, and they have grossed less than two million combined. What does it say about the state of affairs for non-fiction films if, in just three days, one film more than doubles what all 29 of them did together?

I’ve decided I want to do something about this. I see so many great documentaries and it’s a shame that most of you don’t get to see them. Later this year, I will announce a new project that will help other f! ilmmakers get the distribution they deserve.

Of course, if you live in Lincoln, NE; Bangor, ME; Reno, NV; New Haven, CT; Columbia, SC; or Oklahoma City, you didn’t get to see “Sicko” this weekend either. But thanks to the massive turnout in the 440 theaters who had it, the studio has decided to expand “Sicko,” TODAY (Tuesday, July 3) to 200 more theaters! And this Friday, they will add another 100 cities. Those of you who went to see it in the last few days have made it possible for others around the country to see my movie. Thank you.

On Sunday, Canada celebrated the 45th anniversary of its free, universal health care system — with its built-in bonus of living longer than we do. Why do they have this and not us? We’ve already taken their Stanley Cup from them for good. Let’s demand we get to live as long as they do, too! What good is a dumb ol’ Cup if we aren’t around long enough to use it?

TWO DROPS OF WATER–A lady goes to the bar on a cruise ship and orders a Scotch with two drops of water. As the bartender gives her the drink she says, “I’m on this cruise to celebrate my 80th birthday and it’s today..”

The bartender says, “Well, since it’s your birthday, I’ll buy you a drink. In fact, this one is on me.”

As the woman finishes her drink, the woman to her right says, “I would like to buy you a drink, too.”

The old woman says, “Thank you. Bartender, I want a Scotch with two drops of water.”

“Coming up,” says the bartender.

As she finishes that drink, the man to her left says, “I would like to buy you one, too.”

The old woman says, “Thank you. Bartender, I want another Scotch with two drops of water.”

“Coming right up,” the bartender says.

As he gives her the drink, he says, “Ma’am, I’m dying of curiosity. Why the Scotch with only two drops of water?”

The old woman replies, “Sonny, when you’re my age, you’ve learned how to hold your liquor. Holding your water, however, is a whole other issue.”

NOISE ORDINANCE IN DENVER–DENVER – It’s been about a week since an ordinance seeking to crack down on loud motorcycles went into effect in Denver. From the police perspective there’s been a noticeable change in the short time.

“Generally I would always hear a lot of these motorcycles from several blocks away, when they’re accelerating rapidly. I’ve seen a decrease in that and also I haven’t had any complaints,” said Officer Jim Pelloni, who is with the Denver Police Department’s traffic enforcement division.

The ordinance requires motorcycle owners to keep their bikes’ “noise” or sound, depending on which side of the debate a person falls on, to 82 decibels. It also requires bikes made after 1982 to carry an EPA compliance seal or sticker, as it’s more commonly known, to be displayed on the pipes. The sticker would serve as verification that the pipes have been modified to meet the established decibel level. Many bikers are not complying.

“I’ve already spent a thousand dollars on my bike (to make it louder). Why would I spend another thousand to get it back to where it was?” asked Kelly Murphy.

From the biker perspective, loud pipes are vital for safety. Murphy says his bike idles at 105 decibels, clearly in violation of Denver’s ordinance. Some bikers spend hundreds of dollars to make their bikes louder because they say it help drivers hear them when they may not be able to see them.

“I do believe loud pipes save lives and that’s kind of why we do that to our bikes,” said Al Galperin.

“The response to that is that if you ride safe I think you have a better chance of surviving out there than if you ride aggressively with loud motorcycle mufflers and try to bring attention to yourself,” Pelloni said.

I find these reports interesting. Last week a kid riding his bike to a church was killed by a motorist who pulled directly into his path. So what’s the deal: Ride Safely and quietly and we’ll kill you anyway? We need to make noise because of all the idiots on the road–Bandit

ANOTHER BROTHER GONE BY NEVER FORGOTTEN–Paul Lucas, also known as Luke or “Mr. Lucky” was found dead on his kitchen floor yesterday when concerned biker friends could not contact him. It wasn’t like him to not answer the call. Luke was in the midst of a health battle to which he succumbed to investigators say, five days before he was found. Living alone in Port St. Lucie for several years now, he told everyone that he was going to the west coast to see a new girl friend. We believe he never made it to the west coast. The day he died is still under investigation. He was 57.

Luke was one very cool “old timer.” Originally from Cleveland, Ohio, he built a life in Ft. Lauderdale and has a son, Cody, who is now 20. We are trying to contact friends and associates in Arizona, New Jersey, Florida and Ohio to let them know of his passing. Luke rode through life the way he is now riding with the ones who have gone on before us. Whenever we heard a clap of thunder and see a flash of lightening, we know the brothers above are firing up the horses and heading out across the heavens.

Just got word that his day is this Sunday at Boyds Funeral Home at 6400 Hollywood Blvd.in Ft. Lauderdale from 2-5 pm.The family wants close friends to come and pay respects at that time only.

BIKERNET NEWS REVIEW– I love the site. I Look forward to the news letter every week. I have been member for two years now.. One of my favorite things is the books. I especially enjoy Chance, I have read all the chapters twice. Looking for the next one any time now.

Also Good luck on the assault weapon I loved the worlds fastest Panhead(Salt Shaker). Enclosed is some picks of the first bike I built I did it in my garage with a very basic set of tools. My model is my oldest daughter who loves to ride.

Oh by the way, my hobby has turned into a full time job. I make my fenders and sheet metal from scratch use stock ’99 Evo crate motors from H-D, and I do all my own painting and upholstery. Perhaps some day we will sponsor biker net as well. One can only hope,

SANITY FOR THE INSANE AT BIKERNET–Bandit, You are the sanity in my insanity. Sound weird. Well here’s a story you gotta hear. I’m a small time builder operating out of Johannesburg in South Africa. I’ve been around custom bikes, racecars and hotrods since the late ’60s.

My passion became my profession back in 1992 when I started producing bodywork and tanks for custom bikes. You will probably want to kill me when you hear that all my products were made in carbon fiber or fiberglass, but hey I live in Africa and an English wheel is about as scarce as hen’s teeth. All that aside, I decided to only do parts for Sportsters as the aftermarket stuff is a little thin on the ground and dudes with Sportys are kinda neglected. I now produce three frame styles namely Chopper, bobber and pro street, and we can go as wide as a 300 tire on our Chopper and Pro street. Here’s the thing. I decided to manufacture everything here save for the wheels and obviously the motors.

Now, a lot of guys build a good number of components but I have listed close to 100 parts that I first designed, welded, had laser cut, machined or molded. Herein lies the insanity. What was I thinking??? Man, this is one bitch of a project, and I have only one dude that assists and he’s a chef by trade. He’s my Gofer. Some nights I go to bed dirty or hungry or pissed off or all three.

I have the three frames mocked up and am waiting for my machinist to finish milling the triple trees. Like an idiot I let some people see the mockups, and now added to the stress of producing enough parts for twenty bikes, I’m being pestered by a bunch of guys wanting their kits. The only saving grace is that I have a sponsor who has put up the finance, so that I can realize this dream.

When the going gets tough I log on to your site and read the stories and look at the bikes. That is the Sanity. Your site is great and is my homepage. When I get these three ” Lil Ladies” on the floor I’ll mail you a few pics. Hey man, thanks from the bottom of my heart.

BIKERNET BONNEVILLE EFFORT, ASSALT WEAPAN PAINT SCHEME– I have a couple of ideas on paint. It’s really hard to explain and bounce ideas off each other by e-mail. I want this bike to look like a ghost bike riding out of a mirage in the distance. I want people to see the flashing of the flake thru the heat waves coming off the desert floor before they see the bike.

Whatta ya know, a week without a holiday? Every week the news speaks to me like Chinese tealeaves. I get a sense for the industry, society and the world. Then I switch it all around, like Emirel, the chef, whipping up a souffl? on his Viking stove, so the world is more palatable, the industry shines and freedom rings. It’s a good thought, anyway.

A news flash. We received the August copy of the V-Twin News today with the new Crocker on the cover. This week we heard of problems between the partners, so there may be some delays in production until deck is cleared and swept clean. Hang on for updates in the near future.

Anyway, the tealeaves indicated clear skies and upbeat lives this week, so let’s hit it:

VAGABOND CHOPPERS MEETS CRAZY HORSE PAINTING FOR TV BUILD–Last week it was chopper hell at Vagabond Choppers of Deerfield Beach, FL. This week chopper hell has moved about 800 miles north to Crazy Horse Painting of Waxhaw, NC. Say what you want about “one week” builds on tv. That is TV, not REALITY! Reality is working 18 hour days, eating when you can, catching a few hours of sleep here and there, hoping against hope that in your intense day, you do not make some glaring mistake that will come back to haunt you at the worse possible moment.

As of right now, the Today Show bike’s frame, sheetmetal and other small parts are hanging in my paintbooth in color. The frame has been molded and bosywork doen to the sheetmetal. All this in 3 days. Dave, an aspiring painter and airbrush artist from Fla came up here for the week and is getting quite a lesson is real world painting. Saturday night, the parts for the bike, frame, tank, rear fender, and assorted small parts, arrived in bare metal.

Sunday there were 3 women and 1 guy sanding and sanding on those parts. Last night, they were in their second round of primer, molding nearly complete. Yesterday it was just Dave and me. I cannot believe in less than 48 hours, that much work had been accomplished. The Today Show bike is a true team effort. Jimmy, my husband, says I’m pushing myself too hard. Jim tells Dave, “Just tell her when you’re ready to quit for the day and leave. She will just keep going and going.”

But it is far from over. I still have several color coats to spray on the parts. The color is one of my secret mix colors and is unreal wild. I’m about out of my main color and Dave has taken off to get some. With my luck he’ll hightail it home and get while the getting is good and leave me here to suffer alone.

Then it’s artwork, more artwork, logos and clear-coat. Hopefully Dave will stick this out with me. He shook his head the other day and said he had no clue what all went into a paint job like this.

Next week the Chopper Chick Crew and the Today Show bike parts, leave for NYC. Stay tuned to Bikernet for another update next week. Sorry no end result photos of the bike. You’ll have to check out the Today Show, Saturday July 21 7am-9am to see the result of all our hard work.

From all my years of experience, countless things can go wrong between now and then. Can I finish this paint in time? Will Athena and I lose our minds? Can the Chopper Chick Crew pull it off? I guess we’ll all find out.

Rooted in the core design principles and character that have defined Buell motorcycles for 25 years, the 1125R offers power, handling and agility that will take its owner to a new level of riding experience. The Buell 1125R joins the XB and Blast as a third and distinct Buell motorcycle platform. The Buell 1125R is expected to arrive in Buell dealerships in late 2007.

“We designed the 1125R from the rider down,” said Erik Buell, chairman and chief technical officer at Buell Motorcycle Company. “The 1125R takes Buell to a new level of performance, while continuing to embrace the fundamental Buell principals of motorcycle design and offering a great motorcycle riding experience.”

The Buell 1125R riding experience derives not just from its power, but from a carefully considered combination of engine performance, precise-and-agile handling, advanced aerodynamics, and superior rider environment and control, all packaged with distinctive styling that leaves many of the motorcycle’s mechanical components exposed.

New V-Twin Muscle

The Buell 1125R Helicon engine is a new 1125cc DOHC V-Twin, the first liquid-cooled engine to power a street-legal Buell motorcycle. This compact, 72-degree engine is the result of a collaboration between Buell and BRP-Rotax, a leader in the development and manufacture of advanced engines for recreational products. The Helicon engine was designed to Buell specifications and is exclusive to Buell. It will be manufactured in Austria by BRP-Rotax. The most-powerful street-legal engine ever offered by Buell, the Helicon engine is rated at 146 crankshaft horsepower, and is designed to deliver optimized usable power, with a broad powerband across its 10500 rpm range. Its V-Twin design retains the styling and character that has always defined the Buell riding experience.

The engine is cradled in a new Buell Intuitive Response Chassis (IRC) with massive, rigid aluminum spars that double as the fuel reservoir. The new 1125R sticks to the three tenants of the Buell Trilogy of Technology – chassis rigidity, low unsprung weight and mass centralization – to deliver race-inspired agility and handling. The all-new front fairing and radiator cowling was developed using the latest computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models to provide superior aerodynamics, rider comfort, and efficient air flow to longitudinal radiators and a ram-air intake system.

The front wheel is supported by 47 mm inverted forks. A new Buell ZTL2 front brake features an eight-piston caliper based on the brake developed for the Buell XBRR racing motorcycle. A smooth-shifting six-speed transmission is mated to a new HVA (Hydraulic Vacuum Assist) Slipper Action clutch that uses engine vacuum to boost clutch-lever action and to provide a “slipper” effect when the engine is down-shifted at speed. A new underslung muffler has dual brushed stainless steel outlets.

The Buell 1125R offers an athletic riding position. Quiet Zone aerodynamics are achieved by managing air flow around the rider for enhanced performance and comfort. The toe levers on both the brake and shift foot controls are adjustable to match rider foot size. The instrument cluster features a large analog tachometer and a digital speedometer, plus an Onboard Diagnostic Information System (O.D.I.S.) screen and other interactive features. The fairing shape is inspired by the Buell XBRR and features six-bulb headlamps. LED turn signals are integrated into the mirror housings.

The Buell 1125R is available with Midnight Black bodywork, Diamond Blue wheels, Diamond Blue frame and swingarm, and Fusion Bronze engine trim.
