Texas Snowdrop Run for 2009

Vindicta-The Originals
The Original patchholders of Vindicta Motorcycle Riding Club. Reed, third from the right, founded the group after getting V-Rodders together for weekly rides. The group has grown to over 20 members and continues to spark interest whenever it meets.

Well, 2010 has officially begun and Vindicta Riding Club participated in a charity ride today. Republic Harley Davidson, of Stafford, Texas, organized a charity ride to escort 93Q disc jockey and Snowdrop Foundation co-founder, Kevin Kline’s amazing 482-mile ultra marathon to benefit the Snowdrop Foundation, (www.snowdropfoundation.org). Kevin began running December 20th from Dallas to Austin to San Antonio, finally ending up at Texas Children’s Medical Center in Houston. Republic H-D (http://www.republichd.com/default.asp) and General Manager Craig Slovak organized the Ride with Strides to benefit the Snowdrop event. Republic H-D covered each bike’s $10 registration fee and donated the proceeds to the cause. Republic is starting to establish itself as a dealer any city would be proud of, and I am proud to say it will be my dealer of choice from now on. What an amazing way to start the New Year.

Our Lineup
We lined up in front of Republic H-D before the run.

Vindicta, a V-Rod based riding group that has started in Houston, rode in together at around 11 am to represent our club. There’s nothing like riding into an event 10 strong, cruising in like a unit of jet fighters ready for battle. Overall, we had a decent showing, with several wives coming along to show their support.

Rollin' Hard
The initial group flying down the freeway like a squadron of jets. The speed and grace these bikes exhibit makes everyone around them take notice. From the roar of their distinctive motors to the striking profile, these bikes make you sit up and take notice.

Republic H-D had coffee, doughnuts, and barbeque for those who wanted to eat before the ride. We were surprised to see the large number of bikes that showed up to go along on the ride, but bikers have always been known to be a charitable group, as a whole.

The meeting started with a great turnout, beautiful weather, and amazing people.

People mingled around and talked bikes, hangovers, and expectations for the New Year when we heard the announcement Kevin would be arriving soon. We all lined the street to welcome him into the dealership with an incredible roar. Kevin staid at the dealership just under an hour to get refreshed before taking off on the final leg of his incredible journey, which ended at Texas Children’s Hospital. We would wait an hour before taking off on our police escorted ride through the city to help welcome him in at the hospital.

Kevin 1
Kevin Kline, 93Q dj who ran 482 mile ultra marathon, receives hugs and kisses from supporters at Republic H-D. This was his last stop before the final leg of his run into Texas Children’s Hospital in downtown Houston.

The ride was fan-freaking-tastic! I have never had an interest in participating in one of these “group rides”, but I can tell you I had a great time. Besides the comraderie and brotherhood I felt, it was also awesome to experience the warmth we felt from the community. People were waving and onking their horns. There were several corners packed with well wishers who just wanted to see the pack of rolling thunder migrating through the city. The police escort kept us moving as we made our way through the city streets to the hospital. I am not sure if we made the goal of 1,000 bikes, but I couldn’t see the front or the rear of the pack as we rode to the event. All in all, I was impressed with the teamwork and effort that was displayed throughout the entire event proceedings. Those police riders can ride those bikes, and they did a hell of a job on the event, so thanks to the Sugarland PD.

escorted ride
The escorted ride in. We were in the middle of the pack and I couldn’t see the front or the back of the group. Republic H-D donated all of the rider’s registration ($10 per bike), which they covered, to the cause.

Once we arrived at Texas Children’s, we were met with thunderous applause and a nice crowd. 93q, a local country station here in Houston, was broadcasting live at the hospital awaiting Kevin’s arrival.

Craig Slovak, General Manager or Republic H-D, meeting with the people from 93Q awaiting Kevin’s arrival. The station was broadcasting live from the hospital.

When he rounded the final bend of his journey, the applause and cheering was deafening. Bikes were roaring and the people were screaming as if our team had just won the World Series. I was reminded of what a friend of mine used to say, “If that don’t light your fire, then your wood’s all wet!” I was fired up, as there were several patients waiting to congratulate Kevin on his achievement, and all he wanted to do was tell them how proud he was of each of them for their brave daily battle.

As the confetti fell, Reed, our leader, gave the signal for us to depart. The same as we arrived, there group mounted our bikes and cruised out of the event. After a meal and fellowship, we each said our goodbyes and discussed which way each would go. As we exited the city, I was awed by the sight of our group as slowly the group became smaller, each rider heading towards their respective homes. My wife and I endured the chilling ride home, but I don’t think a smile left either one of our faces the entire night. Until next time…

Watch for more events Vindicta will be attending this year. If you live near the Houston keep an eye out for a pack of V-Rods flying the red V. We plan to make an impact in the Houston area and hope the ripples eventually reach the ends of the country.

Las Vegas Bikefest 2009

Las Vegas Bike Fest Banner

longoutside

…does not stay in Vegas. At least not if we can help it. No need to worry though, whatever you did and were not supposed to do will be safe with us. After great riding weather so far throughout Bikefest, the weather forecast for today predicted gusty winds of up to 55 miles an hour for much of Nevada and Arizona – and they got it right for once. So, instead of hitting the highway and heading home today as originally planned, it might be a smart idea to stick around, take in some more of Bikefest and Sin City and get the wrap-up done.

blast

Nightriders

tankgilrs

Rolling out the event for the ninth time this year, Las Vegas Bikefest is still a young event, compared to Sturgis and Daytona pretty much still in its infancy. Located in a city with a multitude of attractions year round and in the heart of a great riding territory, Las Vegas is a destination for bikers regardless of an organized invasion like Bikefest. With already too much going on in the casinos and bars for one extended weekend, adding the packed schedule of Bikefest makes for tough choices. One has to set priorities, yet no matter how much you narrow it down, you still end up wanting to be in at least three places at the same time.

plumboutside

trike

Vendor Village up at Cashman Center is certainly a must, including the Artistry in Iron exhibition and program on a regular basis. The big names on the list are to be found up there, out in the open air and inside the halls. While some builders we talked to prior to Bikefest were hesitant to participate and planned to come just as a visitor and check out what is going on, those who bit the bullet and worked a booth were happy with the attention they received.

enginehome

blueoutside

Paul Yaffe, who brought his Bagger Nation booth up from Phoenix hardly got a breather all weekend and went through 2000 catalogues until Saturday afternoon. Saxon Motorcycles had no reason to complain either; their display of already upgraded 2009 models – now with Brembo brakes and better transmissions – was well attended. Tim and his crew were even talking about a couple of pending sales from the event and some interest from new dealers to pick up their line.

George Ganem from Nightrider Jewelry, who is displaying his handcrafted masterpieces for the fourth year now at Bikefest was also happy and all smiles. Of course we did not do a representative survey among all the vendors, it should be safe to assume that being here pays off. And it does not even have to be at the epicenter of the whole thing. The guys at Las Vegas Harley-Davidson set up their own vendor village in the parking lot of the dealership, bringing in names like Drag Specialties and Klock Works. The wet T-shirt contest on Friday also contributed to attracting a crowd. Also the Arlen Ness dealership transforms the parking lot into a showground with vendor tents.

JD

In addition to the commercial element, a lot of events are going on during Bikefest. The bikeshow at Cashman Center turned out an impressive line-up of high-quality bikes from professional builders as well as individuals. To pick a winner was near to impossible despite the division of the contenders in numerous classes. For those who are not into the organized display of customized rides, roaming the Strip and the streets around it will provide for a similar experience in many of conspicuous spots.

h-dcafe

Oldschool

But roaming the street of what appears to be a gigantic construction zone that is the city of Las Vegas these days can be tricky. This town seems to be constantly reinventing itself with old casinos being blown up and new ones being built, but this year it seems to be really bad. Not only that you suddenly end up in front of a “Road Closed” sign just feet away from where you wanted to go – the Harley-Davidson Cafe on the Strip is one of those traps right now – the patchwork pavement and loose gravel everywhere makes riding in the city anything but fun, in spots flat out dangerous. The fact that most road construction is inactive during the day and work starts with sundown does not help much.

countguitars

count

countbuiildin

One special event that will take you across town from the main venue is an absolute must for everybody who is into cool custom bikes and custom cars: The Count's Kustoms open house party. Even when you forget the stage, live music, entertainment, free food and tons of bikes in the parking lot, this is just a cool place to visit, and the Count himself a great guy to meet. The collection of cars from Italian sportcars to custom rods to choppers that has its home in the building of Count's Kustoms is enough to make you want to spend the rest of the day there.

Miss

Las Vegas Bikefest, as we feel, is well worth making the trip – regardless whether you are a vendor or just looking for a good time in a cool place with cool people. Whatever you prefer – walking off your shoes browsing vendor booths, putting miles on your ride, or partying until the cows come home (well, we did not actually see any) – the choice is yours. See you next year at the tenth anniversary of Bikefest in Las Vegas, which is scheduled for September 30 to October 3, 2010.

CHARLIE BRECHTEL TO PLAY ABATE PARTY–You guys rock. I?m 99% done on getting Charlie a superb booking on June 19th, day before the ABATE party up north. Iron Horse Hotel, that wonderful new hotel next to the Harley Museum is owned by friends of mine.

Lots of high profile people will be there, including a bike display by Dave Cook (builds neat, low slung choppers in the board racer style). Rogue partied at Dave?s place with me during the 105th, and you saw his shop when you went there to see Colleen?s photo studio. Anyway, it looks like he?s going to display some of his great bikes and we should draw a hefty crowd. It?s listed as one of the top hotels in the country. This is for June 19, 2009, and it should be great.

BIKERNET SOCIAL SEMINAR, Engineer VS Management–A woman in a hot air balloon realized she was lost. She reduced altitude and spotted a man below. She descended a bit more and shouted, ‘Excuse me sir, can you help me?I promised a friend I would meet him an hour ago butI don’t know where I am.’

The man below replied, ‘You’re in a hot air balloon hoveringapproximately 30 feet above the ground. You’re between 40 and 41 degrees north latitude andbetween 59 and 60 degrees west longitude.’

‘You must be an engineer said the lady balloonist.

‘I am’, replied the man. ‘How did you know?’

‘Well, answered the balloonist, ‘everything you told me istechnically correct, but I’ve no idea whatto make of your information, and the fact is I’m still lost.Frankly, you’ve not been much help tome at all. If anything you’ve delayed my trip even more.’

The man below responded, ‘You must be in management.’

?I am,’ replied the lady balloonist, ‘but, how did you know?’

‘Well,’ said the man, ‘You don’t know where you are, or where you’re going. You have risen to where you are, due to a large quantity of hot air within. You made a promise, which you’ve no idea how to keep, andyou expect people beneath you, to solve your problems.?

Now is the time!

BIKERNET VOCABULARY LESSON–APATHY–The wall of apathy among bikers that exists is tough to crack, much less knock down. Louisiana, for example, saw its helmet law reinstated several years ago largely because of biker apathy. The ABATE chapter I belonged to in Baton Rouge disbanded because of apathy, even among the officers. At the very last meeting, only two members showed up – me and one old graybeard biker.

The best example I saw of an intensely involved, proactive MRO was ABATE of Ohio. Even in the dead of winter, upwards of 50 Columbus chapter members showed up for meetings, and some of us were even crazy enough to ride if the roads were clear. And we were always on top of legislative activity, state and national, that was of potential impact.

It’s unfortunate, but you gotta keep hammering. Same goes for the Second Amendment and the NRA – you’ve got four million members carrying the fight for hundreds of millions of gun owners who are too damned lazy and apathetic to get off their asses, spend a few bucks, write letters, and make phone calls to preserve and defend our Constitution and Bill of Rights.

It really pisses me off sometimes. I dunno what the answer is. I guess we’ve got keep bitch-slapping the SOBs and hope some of ’em wake up and smell the coffee before it’s too late.

SBA Announces Floor Plan Program–The U.S. Small Business Administration announced yesterday that beginning July 1, it will be offering government-guaranteed loans to finance titled inventory of eligible dealers. But there’s a hefty borrowing minimum: $500,000.

The Dealer Floor Plan (DFP) pilot program will provide lines of credit that allow dealers to borrow against their inventory, and then repay that debt as they sell their inventory or borrow against the line of credit again to add new inventory.

The SBA says it will provide loan guarantees for the lines of credit through its 7(a) program. The pilot program will be available through Sept. 30, 2010, at which time the SBA will make the determination of whether or not to extend the program.

Loans will be available for a minimum of $500,000 up to the $2 million allowable under the 7(a) program. With a maximum repayment term of five years, the loans will come with a 75 percent government guarantee. Borrowers will also benefit from the temporary elimination of fees on 7(a) loans made possible by the America?s Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.

?Floor plan financing can offer some dealerships the opportunity to get through these tough economic times by allowing them to keep their inventory and cash flow intact, as well as save jobs these small businesses provide,? SBA administrator Karen Mills said in a press release posted on the association?s website.

The DFP program is the latest SBA initiative favoring small businesses. In early May, the administration temporarily amended the SBA 7(a) Business Loan Program to make it easier for businesses to qualify. The Motorcycle Industry Council decided to offer Dealernews readers access the MIC Technical Notice that addresses the SBA 7(a) loan program changes (usually the notices are for members only). AMERICAN GLADIATORS RIDE BRASS BALLS BOBBERS–It all started in Afghanistan… Adam Lynch, USMC, headed to Brass Balls HQ in Oklahoma City, OK on May 11th to pick up his new custom-production Digger. While there he joined the Smoke Out Long Road party that had just rolled in from Smoke Out West.

With the evening air filled with the Jasmine Cain Band?s rock and roll hitting like waves from the sea, Lynch shook down his new custom bike and declared it ready to rubble.

The journey to acquiring his new rigid bobber started back in Afghanistan where he was killing time by checking out magazines. The Brass Balls? Bobber of the Year Award for their Classic Bobber caught his attention in V-Twin Magazine and after he got online the company?s Tattoo Digger hooked him.

Through email, the Brass Balls Bobbers online configuration page and a few calls, Lynch designed his own bike that is personalized to him.

?Not many people have the opportunity to get a bike built specifically for them,? explained Lynch. ?I was able to do it while deployed and it is a thrill to see it, ride it and experience it.?

Lynch also mentioned that wherever he goes the wow factor is high. ?When I stop at the light or fill up with gas everyone is straining their necks to see it,? said Lynch.

The Marine?s Digger Bobber is a rigid bike with a springer front end. The power train includes a S&S 96 inch mil, Baker Drivetrain, Tauer primary and D&D Performance Enterprises reverse megaphone 2 into 1 pipe.

The paint is derivative of the Tattoo Digger with swirl grind marks on the metal, which is clear coated with the hand painted Brass Balls logo done in a slight yellow cast. The bike sits on a race-inspired frame that is flexible enough to soak up the vibration and stiff enough to lay down the power.

?I enjoyed working with Adam on this build because the look on his face when we unveiled it was worth all the time and effort we put into getting it done,? said Dar Holdsworth, Brass Balls BossMan.

BUT WAIT… THERE’S MORE…Dar Holdsworth, Brass Balls Bobbers? BossMan, has something special for all the motorcycle enthusiasts? A chance to win a $30,000 custom Brass Balls Bobbers? sled for just $10. For this particular application each kit contains 2 gaskets both of which are molded rubber on a steel core for an excellent seal and durability, even on warped covers.

fire

Fire near the Headquarters today. Never a dull moment around here…

THE ENDING– I developed a riding route to the Smoke Out along a series of Arizona 2-lane highways. Everything about it speaks of the old west, of open roads and the freedom to ride alone, next to vast open plains. I enjoy each mysterious curve ’cause it doesn’t last long on any one road, like a massive interstate rolling on forever. You need visual breaks and shift when you’re on a rigid. So I slipped off the 62 in 27 Palms, onto highway 95 south in Parker, Arizona, caught the 72 to Hope and Salome, to find the 60 toward Aguila, then Highway 71 to Congress, 89 through Prescott and 89A through Jerome and into Cottonwood.

Duane seat
Duane Ballard just finished this set for a Sucker Punch Sally bike. We’ll bring you a report.

It’s good to feel dust under your boots and not asphalt all the time. The 5-Ball racer parts were delivered to Worco Powder Coating for a strange finish. Wait until you see it. Next week I’ll begin the final preparations for the first Chance Hogan book, “Falling Out of Love.” We will also deliver on a World Run Chapter in the Cantina, and new Girl of Bikernet in the Cantina from Peter Linney on a Honda no less, and some scintillating shots of Sin Wu may show up in the Sunday Post from Sam Dixon. We will road test a Scorpion Jacket, perhaps a Saxon Motorcycle, and maybe a surprise from BMW motorcycles. Hang on, it’s going to be an interesting week. Techs are also scheduled from Saddleman, D&D, Zippers, JIMS and Bassani.

Ride forever,

SEMA banner

California Proposes to Enhance Vehicle Scrappage ProgramState to Target Pre-1976 Vehicles —SEMA is opposing a California Air Resources Board (CARB) proposal to spend roughly $30 million annually for an Enhanced Fleet Modernization Program (EFMP) to augment the State’s existing vehicle scrappage program. The proposal would provide incentives statewide for vehicles not currently eligible under the Consumer Assistance Program by removing the existing requirements that vehicles be subject to and fail Smog Check to participate.

CARB is specifically targeting for scrappage pre-1976 vehicles that are not currently required to undergo Smock Check inspections. According to CARB, allowing vehicles that are not currently undergoing registration or that have passed their Smog Check to participate greatly expands the vehicle population that can be retired.

Participants would receive $1,000 per vehicle or $1,500 per vehicle if they meet low-income requirements. The proposal would also establish a pilot voucher program in the South Coast and San Joaquin Valley air basins that targets the highest-emitting vehicles and requires their replacement with newer, cleaner vehicles. The local air districts would work with the Bureau of Automotive Repair (BAR) to determine vehicle eligibility and low-income status. Once approved, the districts would provide the applicant a Letter of Eligibility from BAR and a redeemable voucher. Consumers would retire their vehicle at a participating dismantler, receiving an immediate compensation of $1,000 – $1,500 for vehicle retirement. Consumers could then redeem their voucher at participating car dealerships toward the purchase of a replacement vehicle. CARB is proposing that the voucher compensation be $2,000 or $2,500 per vehicle depending on income level.

CARB will conduct a public hearing to consider adoption of the proposed Enhanced Fleet Modernization Program Regulation (Car Scrap).

weekly metric-

Mark Ukers 750 Honda FEATURE COMING TO BIKERNETMETRIC– The feature and the lil red head is finally here. Check it out on the Metric side by following the link under the picture.

Metric tech question of the week: Honda 1975 750

Josh asks:

from what ive seen from your page it seems that youre a twin guy which is fine. but i was wondering if you have any experiance with inline 4’s? heres the deal i have a 1975 honda 750 four and im just absolutely sick of fiddling with the unreliable and touchy carbs i was wondering if you know of a semi cheap (for a broke ass 18 year old) way of going about fuel injection. i know that i will need a cpu for controlling the amount of fuel going in at certain times and all that but i want to know if i could pick up just a random set of throttle bodys from say a 2000 or newer fuel injected bike around the same size cc as mine and slap it on with one of your cpu’s?
Josh,

I just checked with Metric World Champion, Jim Giuffra of AFT Customs. He is one of the first 500 Honda certified mechanics in the US so he knows the 750 Four inside and out.

The carbs on the bike are very easy to work on but if they have tons of miles, they need to be rebuilt or even replaced. Contact an older Honda mechanic in your area for help. It is easy for them and will not cost much but the carbs work very well and should be virtually maintenance free. There is no replacement fuel injection system out there and they would require much fabrication and would not be cheap. One option is to use a custom intake manifold. There is one on the market that available that is a two into one. It would reduce the four carbs into two, eliminating two of the carbs. That would make it easier to tune and give you less to rebuild. If you want to find this intake manifold, please contact Duane Ballard and ask for help. Duane is a leather seat maker but his friend makes the intakes. Just ask for help and let him know that AFT Customs and Bikernet referred you.

Also, Jim says that your points or your coil could be adding to your problem. He says that Dyna has an electronic ignition for the bikes and coils which make them run very well. Just another something for the bike.

I hope this all helps. If not, please send me another email and I will see about helping out. wacko@bikernetmetric.com

Ownership of a modern American Motorcycle ? no matter how good it is ? requires certain mechanical skills. This new book from Wolfgang Publications covers all the skills needed to do basic maintenance and repairs on your American motorcycle.

From adjusting the clutch cable to installing brake pads, this book explains in both words and photos how to safely do your own work. Instead of taking the bike back to the dealer or shop where you bought it, roll it into your garage and do it yourself.

When you?re trying to learn something for the first time, there?s nothing like a good photo, or series of photos, that show exactly how the operation is performed. Wolfgang Publications believes that more photos make for better books, and this one is illustrated with over 400 color images.

There is no such thing as a maintenance free motorcycle. Save money and gain satisfaction. AMA eGrandPrix Introduction: American debut of electric racebikes mixes the future with the past at 2009 AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days–The American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) is pleased to announce that enthusiasts attending AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days, America’s grandest celebration of motorcycle heritage, will get the first glimpse into motorcycling’s future this July 24-26 at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington, Ohio, with a special presentation of the AMA eGrandPrix Introduction.

Showcasing the cutting-edge technology of electric road-race motorcycles alongside the grandeur of the country’s premier gathering of vintage motorcycle enthusiasts, the AMA eGrandPrix Introduction will feature new-breed zero-emission racebikes circulating at speed on the sinuous 2.4-mile Mid-Ohio track. The electric bikes will perform spirited exhibition laps during breaks in the vintage road-race program that will run as part of the AMA Racing Vintage Grand Championships. The Introduction marks the first international gathering of high-tech electric road-race bikes in the U.S. in the 21st century.

“AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days is all about celebrating motorcycling’s gloried past,” said AMA President and CEO Rob Dingman. “Yet, as the AMA celebrates its 85 years of two-wheeled history, we thought it only fitting to also offer a glimpse into what the next 85 years of motorcycling may bring. The AMA eGrand Prix Introduction showcases the sharpened point of the latest cutting-edge technology, and we’re excited for fans to see the future up close and personal.”

The AMA eGrandPrix Introduction will showcase a number of teams, racers and machines taking part in the inaugural TTXGP eGrandPrix race on the Isle of Man in June. The bikes are sleek, all-electric machines with performance on par with many of today’s internal-combustion racebikes.

Azhar Hussain, founder of the eGrandPrix, said from his office in England: “The world’s first eGrandPrix will launch clean-emission motorcycle racing onto a global platform and demonstrate to the world that clean technologies have matured. AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days provides us with a fantastic opportunity to take our message directly to the United States, a nation with a passion for motorcycling.”

Mission Motors is one team participating in the TTXGP that has agreed to take part in the AMA eGrandPrix Introduction.

Jeremy Cleland, team leader at Mission Motors said: “This is fantastic news and represents a great opportunity for the American public to experience zero-carbon motorcycle racing up close. I believe this event will be the perfect first pit stop for the TTXGP roadshow as it embarks on its global journey.”

He added: “The U.S. right now is a hotbed of advancement in electric motorcycle technology with a number of companies, including ourselves, already taking innovation in this area to the next level.”

Mission Motors, based in San Francisco, is the developer of the Mission One, which the company claims to be the fastest production electric bike. Mission Motors was founded by Forrest North, who first dreamed of building an electric motorcycle when leading the Solar Car Team at Stanford University. The dream stayed with him, even as he joined Tesla Motors to help engineer the company’s cutting-edge battery pack. Mission Motors’ mission is to build an electric motorcycle that can finally compete with gasoline-powered machines.

About AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days

AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days includes vintage racing, North America’s largest motorcycle swap meet, bike shows, demo rides of current production bikes, motorcycling seminars, stunt shows, the new product Manufacturers’ Midway and club corrals featuring marque and regional clubs. The Marque of the Year for 2009 is BSA, whose bikes became synonymous with racing in the United States when the brand swept the top five positions at the Daytona 200 in 1954. The Classic Clubs this year will be the Sandcast Only Owner’s Club (SOOC), and the International CBX Owners Association.

This year will be particularly special because it commemorates the 85th anniversary of the AMA, and will feature a parade of classic motorcycles representing the past 85 years. Volunteers are encouraged to contact the Museum for information about participating in the parade via MotorcycleMuseum.org.

Buell Named Official Pace and Safety Bikes of AMA Pro Road Racing–Specially Outfitted Ulysses and 1125Rs Will Pace All Classes at AMA Pro Races.

EAST TROY, Wis. (June 2, 2009) Buell Motorcycle Company and AMA Pro Racing today announced a multi-year partnership that will see Buell provide the Official Pace and Safety Bikes of AMA Pro Road Racing. As part of this unique agreement, specially outfitted Buell Ulysses and 1125R motorcycles will pace the opening laps of each AMA Pro Road Racing event and be used during caution periods for all AMA Pro Road Racing classes.

Beginning with the Honda Super Cycle Weekend presented by Dunlop Tires at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, July 17-19, a specially outfitted Buell XB12XP motorcycle (the police version of the adventure sport XB12X Ulysses) will lead the field off the grid for pre-race warm-up laps and during caution periods. In addition, a pair of 1125R motorcycles will serve as chase bikes during caution periods to bring the race leaders forward to meet the pace bike and regroup the field.

?We are excited that the opportunity was available to support AMA Pro Road Racing by bringing pace and safety motorcycles into the series,? said Erik Buell, Chairman and Chief Technical Officer of Buell Motorcycle Company. ?AMA Pro Road Racing has been great to work with, and we were pleased to see how much they wanted to respond to the riders? needs with a program that would further enhance the quality of AMA Pro Road Racing events.?

?This new partnership with AMA Pro Road Racing just puts the official stamp on what has already been a great relationship between Buell and our organization in Daytona Beach,? said AMA Pro Racing President Roger Edmondson. ?Buell has made motorcycle racing history in AMA Pro competition the last few seasons and now we will see this same passion and commitment to excellence extend into the promotional arena. We welcome Buell to the AMA Pro Road Racing family of partners.?

The fleet of track-prepared bikes will be ridden by riders selected by AMA Pro Road Racing and will be maintained and transported by Buell in a uniquely configured display trailer. Details of the on-track procedures are being developed by AMA Pro Road Racing and will be announced and discussed with riders during this weekend?s AMA Pro Superbike Doubleheader event at Road America.

?It is important to Buell and AMA Pro Road Racing that we take the time to work with our competitors in developing a full understanding of this new program,? said AMA Pro Racing Vice President of Marketing and Communications Ollie Dean. ?The pace and safety bike initiatives are designed to provide a better competition experience for the teams, riders and, of course, the fans. We will spend the coming weeks in advance of the Mid-Ohio race educating all involved on these programs and the end result will be a better event experience for everyone.?

RECESSION OR DEPRESSION,DANCES WITH FILMS IS NOT DOWNSIZING–THE FESTIVAL THAT?S BEEN BREAKING THE RULESFOR A DOZEN YEARS OPENS ON JUNE 4TH–WEST HOLLYWOOD, CA (June 2, 2009) ? As many film festivals close their doors, Dances With Films continues to expand as the demand for their truly independent brand surges. Taking place June 4th through 11th at the Laemmle?s Sunset 5 in West Hollywood, the festival will screen nearly 100 films (features, shorts, docs and music videos) from as far away as Australia, Italy and UK to films from local talent outshining many of the films in theaters today.

The industry ?Meet the Filmmakers? cocktail party will be held, June 4, 2009 at Guys and Dolls, located on Beverly Boulevard next to Jerry?s Deli in West Hollywood for industry, press and Dances With Films filmmakers and alumni.

Festival rules require that all competition films have no ?known? actors, directors, writers or producers, however as alumni advance in their careers and, to ?break? our own rules – an ?Alumni Spotlight? section of the festival has been created to continue the support of the DWF community. This year, DWF will spotlight the documentary, MYTHIC JOURNEYS by alums Stephen and Whitney Boe with the voice talents of Tim Curry, Mark Hamill and Lance Hendrickson; the comical short film, COWBOY DREAMS, featuring Bill Engvall and Danny Trejo from alum Paul DeNigris and BEING MICHAEL MADSEN, starring Michael Madsen, Virginia Madsen, with a host of cameos from Harry Dean Stanton to Darryl Hannah, from alum Michael Mongillo. The Spotlight Finale film will be political thriller, THE DIVIDED starring Jeremy London by alum Bennett Stein.

?Since the beginning, Dances With Films has been about building a community of filmmakers who understand the pain and elation of what each have gone through to finish their respective films. We?re proud when we say many of our filmmakers stay in touch with each other long after the festival ends and for many years later,? says Michael Trent, Co- Founder. With an expected attendance of nearly 8,000 audience participants and a 98% filmmaker attendance record, DWF expects the question and answer sessions with the film creators to be lively.

SPRING COLORS FROM WILBERS SHOCKS– Today we write you this email to inform you about another option to individualize Wilbers shocks! Many of our clients are not aware of the fact that Wilbers shock absorbers can be ordered in various spring colours.

Clients often have special requests about how their shock absorber should look like and therefore in addition to the standard blue spring (Blue-line) and the black spring (Black-line) our customers now have the option to pick their spring colour out of a huge array of RAL-colours. We added a file with all possible RAL numbers as attachment so that you know which colours are available!

To warranty corrosion protection the surface of a plastic coated spring is carefully abraded and afterwards lacquered with the desired colour.

Delivery time for lacquered shocks is increased for a couple of days and we offer this special service at a fixed price of 25 Euro net per spring. The new spring colours can be ordered with every Wilbers Racing Suspension shock besides the Eco-line at our US importers given the correct RAL number.

THE REDHEADED SEAT MAKER SUPPORTS PEARLS OF HONOR–I recently met a gentleman by the name of Dana Harbaugh, www.pearlsofhonor.com. He was pointed in my direction by the guys at Chrome Fusion, here in Las Vegas.

He has spent a great deal of time with the survivors of Pearl Harbor, and has put together a book of photographs to portray their vigilance in keeping the memories of the event, the casualties, the heroes, and the survivors of pearl Harbor alive. The book’s title is Pearls of Honor. It shows the remaining survivors in their roles as reminders of America’s vulnerability on Dec. 7, 1941. They strive to ensure it never happens again.

Lead

Hey,

As I rode to Cottonwood, through the Mojave desert, I noticed the blazing heat peeling my Wild Brush pin striping in Moreno, then Merango Valley and finally through Mareno. The names or the sun were sizzling my brain cells. Then I reached Skull Valley and slipped through Death Gorge. I thought it might be a sign until some sweet waitress in Prescott told me to turn left at Cherry, but I spotted Cherry 6, Cherry 11, and Cherry 13 heading through People’s Valley. I don’t know about you, but it’s as if the road talks to me.

Maybe it’s the rumbling vibration of a rigid frame, the thoughts of the redhead waiting for me, or the whiskey cloud from the night before. We dodged another regulatory bullet in California this week; No smog testing motorcycles and for good reason. It doesn’t make sense. But I still contend that we need to stand up to this unrelenting regulatory nature. The loudest ringing in my ear, as I crossed the Harquahala Mountains in Arizona, was the freedom bell. We need to polish that bastard, and never let it dull. Let’s hit the news:

CALIFORNIA SMOG TESTING BILL AMENDED, NO SMOG TESTING–I just spoke to our Lobbyist Jim Lombardo, and he told me that he and Jean would release more info on sb435 tomorrow when all the info comes in BUT Jim said that we KICKED SERIOUS BUTT TODAY ! ! ! Denise Ducheny came in with a speech ready to smite the bill, but they called another Senator to speak instead….(BIG THANKS AGAIN , DENISE) and we BEAT THE VOTE !!!

Senator Pavly, who pushed for SB 435 had to re-write part of the bill, AND according to the Associated Press (Copy Shown Below) the portion of the bill requiring motorcycle smog tests HAS BEEN REMOVED ! More news tomorrow.

Senate rejects mandatory motorcycle smog tests–The Associated Press.

SACRAMENTO-A state senator has agreed to water down a bill thatOriginally would have required smog checks for motorcycles.

The state Senate approved the legislation by Sen. Fran Pavley on MondayAfter she agreed to scale it back. It now goes ( BACK ) to the Assembly.

Pavley, a Democrat from Santa Monica, wanted mandatory smog checks forMotorcycles. She says they’re more polluting than cars and that ownersOften make them worse by removing the catalytic converters.

Opponents say motorcycles get better gas mileage and that a smog checkRequirement would be the equivalent of another tax.

The latest version of Pavley’s bill drops the smog-test provision. ItNow merely authorizes law enforcement officers to fine motorcyclists whoRemove the converters.

If the bill passes the Assembly, it would go to Gov. ArnoldSchwarzenegger, a motorcycle owner himself.

EXERCISE FOR PEOPLE OVER 40 —Begin by standing on a comfortable surface, where you have plenty of room at each side.

With a 5-lb potato sack in each hand, extend your arms straight out from your sides, and hold them there as long as you can. Try to reach a full minute, and then relax. Each day you’ll find that you can hold this position for just a bit longer.

After a couple of weeks, move up to 10-lb potato sacks.

Then try 50-lb potato sacks, and then eventually try to get to where you can lift a 100-lb potato sack in each hand, and hold your arms straight for more than a full minute. (I’m at this level.)

After you feel confident at that level, put a potato in each sack.

MILWAUKEE (May 29, 2009) ? Add luster to 2009 Harley-Davidson Touring models with these new Chrome Nine-Spoke Cast Wheels (P/N 41886-09 front, P/N 41889-09 rear; $549.95 each) from Harley-Davidson Genuine Motor Accessories. Though styled to match the original-equipment wheels used on Touring models, these brilliant wheels are manufactured with tooling developed specifically for chrome-plating that results in a near-perfect finish without the ?waves? created when polishing the original-equipment cast wheel.

The rib feature of the original equipment wheel spoke is removed to provide a smoother look, and countless hours of polishing result in a superior finish. Special masking was developed to prevent plating corrosion inside bolt holes and bearing sleeve areas.

All Genuine Motor Accessory wheels are certified to perform to tough Harley-Davidson standards for handling, quality and durability. All H-D wheels also bear the DOT and JWL marking, ensuring that they passed the tests and meet the standards of those agencies. THE NEVER-ENDING CALL OF THE OPEN ROAD– It is deep within all of us. Stirring us from our sleep in the middle of the night, urging us to slip away from work during the day, to steal a few miles on a lonely stretch of road. There is something about riding under a clear sky with the grass gently swaying in time with the lush fields that calms the spirit within. Our hearts pounding out a rhythm with our iron steeds. A point in time when our souls, our bike, and the road blur into one collective being.

Motorcycle rallies have been a place in time to share these stories. They offer the perfect opportunity to rack up the miles crossing the country, a roaring bonfire to warm us when we get there, and a chance to create a few more stories while camped out under the stars. The sad thing is that many rallies have seen declining attendance over the last several years and risk closing. The problem isn’t that we have stopped riding or going to rallies, but simply that we are going to others. It is hard to find a weekend in riding months that doesn’t have several rallies, poker runs, or bike rodeos scheduled. The open road still churns away inside, but it’s calling us to new opportunities to make new friends, new adventures, ride new roads, create new stories, and to share our old stories with a new audience.

The best part about any rally is the road to get there. The miles between here and there and the stories that it creates. Stories about the waitress at that one bar, the one with the really messed up teeth and smile, the one your buddy went home with at the end of the night. The greasy spoon carved out on the side of the road that had the best piece of pie you’ve ever eaten. The cougar that mauled you…and her friend who joined back at her place. Stories about running through field irrigation sprinklers to cool off on a hot day, pushing through a torrential down pour, huddling under an overpass during a hail storm, sometimes all in the same day. Stories of being broke down on the side of the freeway and fixing your bike with a gum wrapper and a piece of string.

The truth is that we are all looking for that moment in time when reality and the road blend together into one. When we become Wyatt and Billy searching for America, when we become Harley winding, alone, the tangled web of Chicago freeways searching for nothing.

The bottom line is that we are still out here, still riding, still searching for what we can’t describe but can only feel inside. The open road calling to us, pulling us away. Why not pull us to your event? Southern Independent Riders

We were amazed at the enthusiastic response we got to the Ace being in America, and at the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in particular, so we are delighted that we are able to continue as an integral feature of the exciting Champions Park concept.

This will be the 6th annual Official WorldAce Cafe London’s Sturgis facility will be open throughout the Rally from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm each day. Right alongside Jack Daniel’s popular Lazelle Street facility, it will be serving breakfast, lunches, snacks, meals, coffee, light refreshments and beers in a shaded inside environment with direct access into the Official World Championship of Custom Bike Building and onto Champions Park.

This year a record number of vendors have chosen Champions Park as their Sturgis Motorcycle Rally venue of choice. Ranging from S&S Cycle, Custom Chrome and Big Dog Motorcycles to Orange County Choppers Motorcycles, ProCharger and Midwest Motorcycle Supply, Champions Park has quickly established itself as the premier vendor venue for premier vendors, right at the heart of Rally visitor traffic since its inception in 2007.

Top 50 Rally Park, STURGIS MOVES TO NEW LOCATION FOR 2010– Legend Air Suspension started the Legend Top 50 Custom Bike Show hosted during the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in 2002. With overwhelming attendance and sponsor support the event grew rapidly over the next few years. The bike builder competition quickly outgrew the Independent Cycle Inc./ Legend Air Suspension parking lot, so owner Jesse Jurrens purchased land and developed the Top 50 Rally Park. From 2004 to 2008 the Sturgis Motorcycle event and vending location has grown in attendance and vendors each year.

The high risk/exciting entertainment at this event location brought a younger more diverse crowd of motorcycle enthusiasts to Sturgis including sportbike riders and stunt performers.

Independent Cycle Inc./ Legend Air Suspension and Top 50 Rally Park are currently in negotiations with a well-known event community in order to develop a new business location. This community fully supports not only Independent Cycle Inc./ Legend Air Suspensions’ manufacturing, but also the events Top 50 Rally Park has developed and plans to host in their new hometown. This relocation would place Top 50 Rally Park and Independent Cycle Inc./ Legend Air Suspension together in one, better-equipped location.

TOP 50 BANNER3

Understanding a move takes a significant amount of time, planning and investment, Top 50 Rally Park will be postponing it’s 2009 events with the intent of continuing to host these annual events again in 2010 at the new location.

Top 50 Rally Park will be closed for the 2009 Sturgis Motorcycle Rally as we prepare for our big move. We’d like to thank all our past vendors and sponsors for their support and business over the last 4 years. We encourage those who have watched us with interest and those who have worked with us in the past to stay in contact as we move and develop our new manufacturing and event location.

The Motorcycle, Italian Style

American Iron

(Stamford, Connecticut—August 1, 2007) … Transportation meets art in The Motorcycle, Italian Style: Riding the Curves with MV Agusta, sponsored by Cliff’s Cycle Revolution, which opens at the Stamford Museum & Nature Center on Saturday, Sept. 8. A special Members Preview Reception will be held Friday, September 7 at 5:30 p.m. This exhibition is made possible with support from the Connecticut Commission on Culture & Tourism.

This vintage1954 MV Agusta 175 CSS “Disco Volante” and more than 30 others will display in the Stamford Museum & Nature Center exhibition, The Motorcycle, Italian Style: Riding the Curves with MV Agusta, Sept. 8, 2007-Jan. 6, 2008.

This vintage motorcycle exhibition, from the Gary & Connie Kohs Collection, traces the MV Agusta brand from its World War II inception to today. More than 30 bikes, most from the Classic era (1945-1980), will be on display throughout the Bendel Mansion Museum Galleries until Jan. 6, 2008.

This “edgier” exhibition is the first motorcycle show the museum has ever displayed. “We’ve always found our audience to be very interested in transportation and design issues,” said Curator of Collections Rosa Portell. “It offers us a perfect opportunity to underscore the principle that art can be found not only in the traditional media, the kind that hangs in museums, but in these beautiful machines which are, themselves, art works.”

“Museums take objects and interpret them for the public. Hopefully, we’ll help people see things that they may not have thought about,” Portell said. In this show, isolated parts of the machines will be display on pedestals as objects of beauty.

And for children, Chica, MV Agusta factory’s guard dog, will guide them through the exhibition. Tots 2 to 4 years old will be able to ride toy bikes in their special section in the Bendel Mansion Great Hall, as they learn about safety on two-wheeled vehicles.

As World War II came to a close in Italy, the Agusta family saw the opportunity to create a new machine that would provide inexpensive and reliable transportation to a country ravaged by war.

MV Agusta motorcycles had barely hit the market when one of them was driven into first place in a modest race. From 1956 to 1976 MV Agusta would win over 3000 international races, becoming the most successful brand in the history of the sport.

agusta side by side

By the mid 1960s motorcycles began to represent a certain non-conformism. Motorcycle-riding itself with its individualistic, in-your-face, ruggedness became coded speech for counter-culture, with an ethos and worldview of its own.

“If it were a machine strictly for practical purposes, it would have long ago disappeared,” Portell said. “If it was strictly a way to get from point A to point B, there are ways that are more practical than on the back of a motorcycle. Riding a motorcycle is a lot more than a matter of transportation. It’s about image and the experience of the open road.”

In recent years, some motorcycles have evolved into luxury objects and status symbols with their spectacular esthetic qualities. Sometimes priced higher than many an automobile, their machines’ craftsmanship, materials, looks, and limited production numbers are meant to identify their riders as people of means and taste set apart from the crowd.

Kawasakilayoffs

Kawasaki Downsizes Employee Pool–Kawasaki Motor Corp. USA released more than three-dozen employees June 25, many of those at the OEM’s headquarters facility in Irvine, Calif., sources tell Dealernews. The move follows a decision earlier this week to lay off approximately 25 percent of the office and support staff from Kawasaki Motors Manufacturing’s consumer products division in Lincoln, Neb.

The cuts at Kawasaki Motor Corp. USA reportedly involved about 50 people spread throughout the U.S. Sources say the layoffs occurring in both Irvine and Lincoln are part of a reorganization of the company’s consumer products division. The recent round of lay-offs in Lincoln follows last month’s move to shrink the company’s 1,300-person employee pool by 320 workers.

Kawasaki operates six businesses in the U.S., two of which pertain to consumer products: Kawasaki Motor Corp USA (KMC), the sales unit, and Kawasaki Motors Manufacturing Corp. USA (KMM), the production unit.

Besides the headquarters building in California, KMC has regional sales offices and/or distribution centers in Piscataway, N.J.; Atlanta, Ga.; Ft. Worth, Texas, and Grand Rapids, Mich.

KMM, which has operations in Lincoln and Maryville, Mo., builds all of Kawasaki’s ATVs, Jet Ski personal watercraft and Mule utility vehicles.

Departments at KMC that have been realigned include product planning, which moves to the corporate planning division, and human resources and public affairs to Kawasaki’s legal division.

KMC spokespeople say the reorganization focuses on increasing long-term profitability while establishing a new reporting structure more closely reflecting the current operational characteristics of the company’s various divisions.

MRFa

MRF LEGISLATIVE ALERT, Bikes for Beaters?–The Motorcycle Riders Foundation (MRF) took note that the Presidentrecently signed the Car Allowance Rebate System bill, also known as CARS,or by its former moniker, “cash for clunkers.” This law providesindividual Americans with vouchers up to $4500 toward the purchase of anew automobile when trading in an older, less efficient vehicle. The ideabehind the law is two-fold, to stimulate an ailing auto industry and greenup the country at the same time. CARS does not allow for any participationby motorcycle customers or dealers. (For technical information on theCARS program, visit www.cars.gov.)

If Senator Bob Casey (D-PA) has his way, however, you will soon be able totrade an older vehicle that gets less MPGs for a brand new motorcycle.Casey has introduced S. 1248, the Green Transportation Efficiency Act of2009, aka the Green TEA bill. The Casey bill would provide a $2500 voucherwhen trading in an older car or bike to purchase a brand new motorcyclefrom a participating, registered dealership.

The trade-in must meet the following qualifiers:
is in drivable condition;
has been continuously insured consistent with the applicable Statelaw and registered to the same owner for a period of not less than 1year immediately prior to the trade-in;
was manufactured less than 25 years before the date of the trade-in;
andThe new fuel efficient motorcycle must meet the following qualifiers:

equitable or legal title of which has not been transferred to anyperson other than the ultimate purchaser (in other words, brandstinking new);
carries a manufacturer’s suggested retail price of not less than$7,000 and not more than $20,000; and
has a manufacturer’s estimated combined fuel economy of at least 40miles per gallon.

The Casey bill would authorize the program for one year from date ofenactment. The MRF does not have an official position at this time pendingfurther details, but has been working with Senator Casey’s office to getsome additional clarity on the impact of this legislation.

The time frame for this particular bill is relatively brief. Anythinglonger, or worse ? permanent, would seriously call into question theforcing of an end of useful life on vehicles that are still drivable andcollectable. At the same time, the MRF does appreciate the fact theSenator Casey considers motorcycles and cars equal forms of transportationand both deserving of the same benefits.

Whitehorsejacket

WHITEHORSE GEAR RECOMMENDATION–After a few rides in all kinds of weather, I’ve fallen in love with the new Kathmandu jacket from Firstgear…Here is a jacket that does everything the way I would have designed it.

Superb fit, very comfortable with or without the cold weather liner Underarm “pit zip” vents! (Hey a lot of heat hangs out under your arms, like it or not. Easy to operate vents on chest and back too.) Built in under-helmet rain hood and back mounted hydration bladder system are pretty sweet bonus features

Top-shelf armor that is fairly invisible both in the look and feel of the jacket

Handsome styling and great conspicuity with excellent reflective piping

Tough outer fabric feels like it will hold up well for street or trail use. You won’t need to worry about snagging your street jacket on low overhanging shrubs or tree branches should you head off road!

Perfect length for dual sporting. Nearly full 3/4 length in rear, abbreviated length in front for great comfort and mobility

Straps to adjust the fit of armor on your arms No long row of snaps to fasten on the main “storm flap”. Just smooth over the Velcro and go Awesome, comfortable, warm neoprene “cuff gaskets” on the liner to keep the wind and weather outside your jacket

And dry! During a recent jaunt of some 180 miles on a chilly, wet day, I was warm and comfortable without needing any additional rain gear or electrics Of the dozens of jackets I’ve worn over the years, this is probably my favorite to date. Another home run for Firstgear!

NEW BUILDS FROM CRO CUSTOMS– wanted to put the word out that I have two projects that could use a patron. Ideally, I would love to do full custom builds for a select client. I have a ’66 Shovelhead, first year shovel. The current state of the ’66 is motor (needs rebuild) frame with weld on rear section, 4-speed ratchet tranny. The second is an ’84 Shovel last year shovelhead, motor needs rebuild, frame is untouched, 4-speed may tag tranny. All the basic parts are ready to roll for these two.

These two projects can go in any direction. I would love to build the ’66 as a ’70s era stretched out chopper, but I am open to alternatives. Both bikes have clean CA H-D titles, so no hassles registering.

Calebbike

Attached is a shot of the ’66 that was at Michael Lichter’s show last year. I’ve wrapped up three builds recently and now we are working on an Sporty evo powered board track build, complete frame up build, should be nutty. Also my ’56 Pan is in the works. See you in Sturgis?

The Sporty will have dual 23″ wheels, like you’re using from Black Bike Wheels, front pre-unit drum rake, rear sporty drum. Here is a shot of a 45 springer we just narrowed for the project. I’ll send you pics and keep you posted. Check my blog for updates as well. http://crocustoms.blogspot.com/

Rocketcarspeed

Triple-engined car could smash land-speed record–WHEN the supersonic car Bloodhound SSC streaks across the desert sometime in 2011 in its bid to break the land speed record, it will be powered by no fewer than three different types of engine.

A rocket will boost the car to around 1200 kilometres per hour, (Mach 1) while a Eurofighter jet engine will provide more controllable thrust to coax it up to 1600 km/h (1000 miles per hour). Finally, the car is equipped with a V12 petrol engine to pump the fuel and provide electrical and hydraulic power to the jet and rocket.

The car is being developed by a team led by Richard Noble whose Thrust SSC has held the land speed record of 1221 km/h or Mach 1.02 since 1997. Bloodhound SSC is designed to break the 1600 km/h barrier.

While the jet and petrol engines are well-established technologies, the team is building the rocket motor from scratch. The engine is a hybrid design that uses liquid hydrogen peroxide as an oxidizer to burn solid polyethylene, the same stuff that plastic bags are made of. Hydrogen peroxide is squirted into one end of a hole running down the centre of a cylinder of polyethylene, burning the plastic from the inside out. This creates a supersonic flow of exhaust from the other end of the cylinder, which pushes the rocket forward. Changing the flow of hydrogen peroxide alters the thrust.

Last week, Noble announced that his team had completed the first tests of a 1/3-scale prototype rocket engine at a test site in the Mojave Desert in California. One way to judge the performance of a rocket engine is to examine the telltale diamond patterns in its exhaust which are formed by reflected supersonic shock waves. “This first engine looks to be functioning very efficiently from the shape of the flame and the distinct Mach diamonds,” says Adam Baker, an expert on hybrid rocket engines with Surrey Satellite Technology, a space technology company in Guildford, UK.

The next stage of the project may be more challenging. “Scaling up hybrids can be difficult because the fluid flow inside the engine can change significantly as the size of the port in the fuel goes up,” says Baker. Tests of a larger hybrid engine are scheduled to start on 2 July.

Damn, This year was rough. It was like we were being put thru a test. We had one crew member loose two loved ones within 24 hours on Thanksgiving day. We found out from a good friend that his wife had Breast cancer and he couldn't help us this year.

He and I paid to ship the boxes, so everything fell on me and my crew. A couple of weeks before Christmas my little cousin, who is only 3 months old, started to have a hard time eating and was put in the children’s hospital. He had to be fed thru his belly. The little guy had more going wrong for him than right. Things were not looking good for him.

rollin3
Rollin Sixes rods.

Finally, they found out what was wrong with him, operated and within 24 hrs he was like a new baby. He made it home two days before Christmas. I guess miracles really do happen around Christmas time. Then we had one group in Connecticut, who volunteered to help us out. They took over a month past the deadline date to ship us eight boxes of stuff.

Then we were told their backer, who pays to ship the stuff, backed out, so we raised the shipping money in three days thanks to a great group of folks who I am proud to call my friends, The Hot Chili Rods Car Club out of Cape Coral, Florida. Without them we could not have had the boxes shipped to us.

rollin4

To keep a long story short, there just was no reason to take over four weeks to ship the boxes, which made us over a month late with wrapping and shipping the gifts out. As Forest Gump would say, “That's all I got to say about that, LOL.” The last kick to the groin came two weeks ago with the news that my wife’s mom has cancer and that they can't get rid of it, but there is good news. They can knock it into remission. Fortunately, she is strong like the rest of us. I sometimes felt like I was living the Elvis Presley song, “You gave me a mountain.” Like the song says, it's been one hill after another. We climbed them all one by one, but this time Lord you gave us a mountain, a mountain we may never climb, it ain't a hill any longer, you gave us a mountain this time. BUT WE DID CLIMB IT, WE ARE STILL CLIMBING IT AND WE WILL NEVER GIVE UP AND STOP CLIMBING IT.

I asked my family (because I don't have a crew, I have family) if they wanted to call it off this year? Not one of them even thought about saying, yes. What strength and unselfishness. Needless to say, they all have my love and respect, and I am lucky to have them in my life.

rollin5

That's what makes us who we are. That's why when everybody else sees a worthless piece of crap rusting away in an old barn or field. We see a badass bike or hot rod in the making. When everybody else sees a mission impossible, we see a great winter's project or something to do on weekends even though we don't have the cash. We just plainly refused to give in and that's that. Our numbers are not great, but it's cool because that's what makes us unique. The will to keep going, no matter what and because of that we are the only ones who knows what it is like to take that piece of crap on it's first ride.

As you stand in front of her, checking out what a badass machine your scoot, rod ,or sled has turned into, you feel like a 15 year-old-kid who just got his first piece of ass. Hell, if they could put that feeling in a drug, I want a pound, a bottle, I want a case of it. Folks like us are the reasons our enemies don't land on our shores. We are the ones our countries enemies are afraid of. That's why when we do get attacked, they do it like cowards and not face to face.

rollin6

All I know is that I am proud to be one of them, this mechanical clan of outcasts. Doing the T-Shirt Drive for the Troops I have met some of the best people. I have become close friends with folks that I have never laid eyes on who think that we and what we do are worth their time and money, and here is what we did this year. We have wrapped over 1,700 gifts and will send out 148 boxes to the Troops. I want to say thanks to everyone who helped us out. I can't think of a better group to be standing with. I also want to say a special thanks to Keith “Bandit” Ball and Nyla (Easyriders and Bikernet.com, worlds fastest panhead fame) for really stepping up this year to help us out.

rollin2

Thanks to Geno Dipoi and Alan Mayes. Alan helped us in more ways than one (The Horse, Old School Rodz, Car Kulture Deluxe fame) for their help this year. They have supported us since day one, and to the Hot Chili Rods CC of Cape Coral for going way out of their way to help us this year. A real special thanks to Clayton, rumor has it he is a longwinded son of a bitch. He is disabled by tumors and chemo and is just trying to make ends meet. He thought this was worth his time and hand knitted 75 hats. Talk about not being kept down. Our hats are off to you Bro.

I am going to take the time to list the ones who support us. Most have been with us from the beginning. Folks, support these businesses, don't let them fade away because they do what most don't. They give back.

rollin7

P.S. While I was writing this and trying to get it out, I got a call that my mom fell and broke her hip. They will operate on her this Saturday. My mom and dad will have to spend two months with us so she can heal, just another hill to climb.

–Jerry n family, Rollin Sixes Choppers n Rods.(phantom5100@yahoo.com)

Don't forget guys, if you have any leftover t-shirts, cd's, or dvds, etc. from the summer shows we will take them. And if you could set out a collection jar at gatherings to help pay for shipping we would appreciate it.

BIKERNET MEDICAL CENTER FINDING FROM DR. WEIL–Today we look at nutrition and its relationship to cancer. A healthy diet can help the body in its efforts to heal itself, and in some cases, particular foods can lessen the risks of serious illness. To help reduce your risk of some types of cancer, try the following:

Avoid polyunsaturated vegetable oils, margarine, vegetable shortening, all partially hydrogenated oils, and all foods that might contain trans-fatty acids (such as deep-fried foods).

Increase omega-3 fatty acids by eating more cold water oily fish, freshly ground flaxseeds, and walnuts.

Reduce consumption of animal foods and try to replace them with vegetable proteins such as whole soy products.

Use hormone-free, organically produced products whenever possible.

Eat plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables.

Eat shiitake, enokitake, maitake, and oyster mushrooms frequently.

Drink green tea daily.

STUDENT OF BIKERNET STAFFER DR. NUTTBOY SURFACES–My former art teacher, Ladd Terry, aka Dr. Nuttboy, told me to get in touch with you – so here I am. In short, I’m a 17-year-strong tattoo artist and lifetime San Pedro resident who had a calling to do something completely different when it comes to artistically customizing bikes.

For about 10 years I’ve worked to develop a sandblasted etching process that would allow me to get awesome, multi-dimensional artistic effects on chrome and glass. No lasers, no computers, no clip art designs – just my art, by hand.

I love bikes a hell of a lot more than cars, so I’ve pretty much devoted myself to motorcycle etching exclusively. I can etch any chrome part, mirror or windshield with nearly any design. Our company is called Bad Ass Chrome & Glass ( www.badasschromeandglass.com ).

We’ve got three little kids and am working hard to make a real go of this. We pulled together enough cash for one of those mini ads in Easyriders, and we just displayed at the Long Beach Motorcycle Swapmeet. .

freedom isnt free

SHASTA RALLY, OPERATION GRATITUDE AND MEMORIAL DAY THOUGHTS–I saw your headline & I want you to know that you have my family’s & my sincere condolences. My fine son was USAF. He was stationed on Diego Garcia repairing generators & bomb lifts during Operation Iraqi Freedom. He is home now, coaching high school football & teaching Sophomore English. I missed him every day he was overseas. I cannot imagine losing a son.

Too many Americans take our freedom for granted. Freedom is bought by blood! You have my family’s & my biker brothers & sisters eternal gratitude & sympathy. When a son or daughter goes off to war, their family’s & their friends’ hearts follow. No one rests easy until they return. If they don’t return, then, Americans need to shower the family who sustained this most unbearable loss with love & appreciation. Even then, I cannot imagine your family’s & your grief.

My co., South Bay Biker Productions, puts this event on each Independence Day weekend. We sponsor Operation Gratitude (www.operationgratitude.com) & the American Veterans Traveling Tributes (www.avtt.org) – the “Cost of Freedom” & “Traveling Wall” – a football field of the replica display of the Wall in DC as well as similar size displays honoring those who gave their lives in other American War campaigns & 911.

The theme of the Rally is to honor American soldiers who give us the freedom to ride our motorcycles anywhere we want in the greatest country in the world. If you don’t have plans on the 4th, please join us as my guest. The riding is beautiful.

Outside of my own family, bikers are the best family I have ever had. EzJ 877-688-4229 & www.shastarally.com shoot me your email address, mailing address & phone #, I’ll hook you up!

–Jeff Kraus

Thank you very much for the condolences and the invite. Unfortunately, I am working (gotta pay the bills) and saving any extra days I have off for a 5 state 3000+ mile ride this summer with attendance at the Gathering of the Patriot Guard in Ogden UT in August.

I did take Fri/Sat/Sun off to fly back to Arlington to lay a wreath with my son. Having his resting place so far from me is a bit hard, but his lovely wife wanted him resting with the legendary heroes. Since he was the first of the fallen in Iraq and they lived in Virginia at the time, she wanted him laid to rest there. And I have to admit, every time I go back there, I can see it was a wonderful decision as it is such a peaceful place and very beautiful.

So now I go back to work today, and every day until that time that it is time for me to go home and reunite with my wonderful son. Thank God for my BON friends, and of course 2-wheels and the freedom it brings.

I will put your rally in my list of possible rides for next year, and again thank you for the invite. I honor you and the riders that ride with you for all that you do for our heroes, and I am sincerely happy for you and your family that your son did return safe, and as you said, when a soldier goes off to war, the families heart goes with them and does not return till he or she is home safe. My heart is still in Iraq where my hero fell, but I will get it back soon enough.

I am forever thankful for the brotherhood (and sisterhood) of those who ride, and their patriotism. May we never lose that feeling of family and loyalty to those who serve to keep us free.

May God bless and ride with you my friend, and watch over you and yours.

WOMAN RIDER TESTS2008 BMW R 1200 GS DURING CROSS-COUNTRY RIDE–Owner: Monica Holmes, Manhattan, New YorkMonica’s height: 6 feet.

The BMW R 1200 GS is one of the most successful production models for the company. BMW began as a producer of aircraft engines in 1913 and produced motorcycles before it produced cars. In 1921 it developed the M2 B15 known as the first “Boxer” motorcycle. The production motorcycles began as the R series and one of the most successful models was the R2 in 1930 selling more than 15,000 units.

That tradition continues today. The R 1200 GS is one of BMW’s most successful production models with more than 100,000 units sold. The model is a dual purpose bike that can be ridden on the black top, busy city streets or on dirt roads. The engine is an air/oil cooled, 1170cc, flat twin, four stroke with a six speed manual transmission. The bike weight is just over 550 pounds and has a 33-inch seat height. The bike has an on board computer and the ability to adjust the suspension at the touch of a button.

The GS was a natural fit for me. My first bike was a 2006 Suzuki V-Strom 650 and that was great for the first two seasons. When it was time to take a solo cross country trip, there was no question about the bike I was going to ride. In my search for speed, power, safety and endurance, I kept coming back to the same bike, the BMW 2008 R 1200 GS.

WomenriderBMW

In prepping for a ride from Manhattan, New York, to Los Angeles, California, I thought the bike was a little overkill, I was wrong. This is a big bike with an intimidating look. The horsepower and torque have gotten me out of some hairy situations. The heated grips kept me warm in the Rockies. The anti-lock brakes stopped on a dime and the 5.3 gallon fuel tank with 45-50 mpg kept me going and going. The R 1200 GS loved the twisties in the Badlands and the mountain roads of the Black Hills. All of this with a very smooth ride, although with the occasional sore bum.

For a solid week, I rode in the rain and there were times when water was up to the foot pegs. With various construction sites along the way there was a lot of loose gravel on the road and grooved pavement. Whatever the situation, the GS preformed like a champ.

My biggest complaint with the BMW 2008 R 1200 GS was and always will be the seat. At 6 feet even with a 36-inch inseam, I do not have the standard complaint with the bike height and I like the flexibility of the stock seat. The design allows it to be raised or lowered. However, no matter what position it is in, it just isn’t very comfortable after a few hours of riding. With an MSRP north of $14,500, the bike could have a cushier seat.

All in all, I love the BMW R 1200 GS. It is a great motorcycle. The versatility of this motorcycle is unmatched. I ride in Manhattan and love the zippy feel in traffic. On the open road, this bike has proven it can go the distance in widely varied conditions with gusto. I have never felt safer or more confident on a motorcycle.

SHASTA RALLY SUPPORTS OPERATION GRATITUDE–On Sunday , I rode from Redondo Beach, CA to the National Guard Armory in Van Nuys to participate in sending Operation Gratitude?s (www.operationgratitude/com ) 450,000th CARE package to our soldiers deployed in Iraq & Afghanistan. I was also at OPGrat?s HQ as a messenger. Carolyn Blashek, OP Grat?s co-founder, asked me to make the announcement that South Bay Biker Productions & the Shasta Salute to America Motorcycle Rally Staff had finally secured a custom motorcycle that will be designed, built from scratch & donated by Monty Hardt of Klamath Custom Cycles.

Gratitudestage

The keys to the new bike will be in Operation Gratitude 500,000th CARE package which will be tracked & given to a deployed American soldier this Christmas. During the announcement, I called Monty so he could be introduced and say ?hello? to OPGrat?s volunteers over the Armory?s PA system. When introduced, a big cheer went out for Monty followed by thunderous applause. The Military Channel has agreed to cover the service member’s receipt of the milestone package. Monty?s motorcycle will be delivered to the recipient when they return stateside to their home military base.

Monty is a modest man. His only request is to be present so he can see the soldier?s face when they take delivery of his bike. Monty told me, ?This is the most important thing I have ever done in my life.?

Gratitudecrowd

Monty has 2 daughters. Both are currently serving our country ? 1 is in the Army and the other is in the National Guard. A rendering of the bike will be on display at Monty?s booth at the Shasta Salute to America Motorcycle Rally which is held annually over Independence Day weekend. Monty will also be running our burnout pit at the Rally. (He assured me that he will be bringing plenty of fresh tires.) Operation Gratitude?s founders, Mrs. Blashek & SSG Elizabeth Cowie will also be leading the American Veterans Traveling Tributes escort from Klamath Falls Home Depot to the Tulelake-Butte Valley Fairgrounds on Wednesday morning, July 1st , running the OPGrat booth & both of these American heroes will be speaking at the AVTT Dedication ceremony held at the Rally on Sunday morning.

This is part of what the Shasta Salute to America Motorcycle Rally is about. How do you like them apples!
