Iron Butt Ride on a ’36 Knucklehead!– I just did my first Iron Butt Association qualifying ride with a friend of mine from Cyprus on Sunday. We rode from Wauseon Ohio to Redfield South Dakota, I was on a 1939 knucklehead and broke the record for the oldest Harley to finish an IBA run, 40 minutes later my friend Iacovos from Cyprus broke the new record on my 1936 EL. We went over 1050 miles in 22 hours. We recorded 5 short video clips along the trip.

Check them out here–> www.youtube.com/gosonytv We start out fresh and excited and gradually get wore down and start looking like zombies.

But wait… there is more. I plan on doing another IBA run in 12 hours and bringing along a friend of mine as a passenger. My friend Mara will be updating our whereabouts along the trip on her blackberry. If you would like to follow along on the trip, go to www.oldbikesinsd.blogspot.com and see where we are at, if we broke down, got arrested, or made it to our destination in Lexington Ohio at the AMA days. If I complete this next run, it will be two IBA runs within five days of each other–on a 70 year old motorcycle. Wish me luck! If any of you are going to the event, look me up and we can have lunch and hang out!

BOSTON STAMP ACT– Riders Protected and will Rally on July 27th!– Justice Riders who filed suit against the City of Boston’s “EPA Stamp Tax” Ordinance received word late Tuesday afternoon the Superior Court denied their request for a temporary restraining order for enforcement of the $300 find Ordinance.

Yet the riders cheered the Court’s decision that places the City ‘on notice’ that it may be held responsible for reimbursing motorcyclists for any fines imposed, and their costs associated with defending the $300 citations, if their Complaint to strike down the Ordinance is successful.

In her well reasoned five-page decision, Suffolk Superior Court Justice Geraldine S. Hines, found the five Plaintiffs, Paul W. Cote, William E. Gannon, II, Michael D. Longtin, Vincent A. Silvia, and Lawrence Cahill, although not Boston residents, had ?standing? to bring the action that would void the Ordinance. However, the plaintiffs did not meet the standing that “irreparable harm” would be caused to riders if enforcement took place, as none had been cited and fined yet.

Judge Hines, in her ruling, opened the door that the City of Boston, and it’s taxpayers, may be responsible to reimburse cited riders for fines imposed and “costs” associated with defending those imposed fines, should the Court later find the Ordinance be struck down.

“This is still a partial victory for riders,” claimed Plaintiff Cote of Amesbury.

“While we hoped the Judge would temporarily restrain the misguided EPA stamp enforcement, this is better than what we hoped for.”

The Justice Riders will co-host a EPA (Either Pay or Act) Citizen-Biker Rally Monday night from 7:00 until 9:00 p.m. at the Hard Rock Cafe in Boston to celebrate their Court Victory, give further legal direction for riders, and raise legal offense funds for the lawsuit by selling stickers reading “Don’t Tread on Me – I refuse to be ruled by Boston City Councilors” for $2 each.

?I am glad the Judge gave us legal standing we hoped for in this case,? said Plaintiff Mike Longtin of Easton. ?Today is a good day for New England area riders.?

“If the City issues 100 repugnant citations that conflict with State Statutes and Regulations, those 100 riders may appeal spending at least $1,000 each in legal fees contesting those $30,000 worth of citations. Then, should the Court strike down Boston?s Ordinance, the City and it’s taxpayers lose that $30,000 and will have to reimburse the contesting riders $100,000.00 in legal fees.”

Plaintiff Vince Silvia of Haverhill was more blunt saying, “The City wants to cite me, I’ll contest. I’ve had my bike sound tested 5 times, I will appeal and they can pay me whatever I spend when they lose.

Plaintiff Bill Gannon explained, “Generally, when you contest a citation, you bear the appeal fees and costs of proving yourself right and not wrong.”

Gannon continued, “Judge Hines told the City of Boston in her decision that they are exposed. If the five Plaintiffs successfully prove that that this Ordinance is repugnant and in conflict with Federal Codes and State Statutes and Regulations, Boston must reimburse the harm (costs) riders incur.”

On July 20, 2009, sets of Interrogatories (questions), admissions of fact, and request for documents were served on the 13 City of Councilors and Mayor Menino to be answered under oath. Copies of those discovery requests can be viewed on www.BostonBiker.com and www.JusticeRiders.com.

Justice Riders encourage riders with EPA stamps on their bike attend Monday night’s Citizen Biker Rally at the Hard Rock Cafe to get updated information and direction for further action.

“This matter is not about noise,” claimed Cote`, “It is about the City of Boston wrongfully imposing this standard that is improper.”

Get the best in windshield performance from Custom Chrome and National Cycle–Morgan Hill, CA ?? National Cycle?s VStream is revolutionizing motorcycle windshield performance! While other manufacturers offer taller screens or air spoiler tops, National Cycle designed, for the first time ever, a windshield with airflow calculated and adjusted to quiet and comfort the rider?s environment.

The typical airflow pattern of the wake from most windshields is called a van Karman vortex. At speeds of 50-90 mph, the air swirls off the windshield in an approximate 90-degree segment of rotation, hits the bottom of the rider?s neck on the way up, and curves off the shoulder at approximately 45 degrees. We gave the VStream its name for the shape it takes at the upper edge. The patented ?V? shape is so quiet because it pushes this vortex out and away from the side of the rider?s head. The rider?s helmet then resides in still air, and the passenger?s environment is greatly improved as well. Of course, with small sporty screens of different sizes, the effect on the rider will vary, but there is always a notable difference in quietness and comfort!

VStream windshields deliver unprecedented durability and optical clarity through the use of 4.5-6.0mm thick Lexan? polycarbonate with FMR hardcoating or our exclusive Quantum? hardcoating.

Here are some pics of Iacovos and I. We went 1050+ miles in 22 hours. I am leaving to do it again at 2am today. Wish me luck.

RUSTY” IRON BUTT CHALLANGE? — Matt Olsen, the Antique Motorcycle Club of America’s Youth Coordinator, is planning on riding his 1936 Harley Davidson EL from South Dakota to the AMA Vintage Days to participate in the AMA’s 85th anniversary parade.

The event in Lexington Ohio, takes place from July 24th through July 26th. The weekend’s festivities include vintage racing, North America’s largest swapmeet, bike shows, demo rides and more.

matt olsen

What makes Matt’s trip so unusual is that he and his passenger, Mara Butler, plan on riding the 1,100 miles in 24 hours with no chase vehicle or support team. “We would love to qualify for the Iron Butt Association Saddle Sore 1,000 award,” Matt stated. “In order to qualify for an IBA Saddle Sore 1,000 award, you have to ride at least 1,000 miles in 24 hours. And we want to do it on a 71 year old Harley.”

“We want to shatter the general motorcycling public’s perception that the old and collectible motorcycles belong in museums, or that they can’t be ridden.” Matt explained. “I figure this is a good opportunity to attempt my first Iron Butt Run and participate in the AMA Vintage Days event while demonstrating the durability and reliability of my 73 year old motorcycle.” If Matt and Mara succeed, Matt’s 36 EL will be the oldest Harley to qualify for an IBA award.

matt engine

If you can’t make it to the AMA Vintage Days event on July 25th and 26th to meet Matt and Mara, you can check in on their progress at www.oldbikesinsd.blogspot.com, Mara will be doing updates along the 1100 mile trip at every gas stop.

We have reached over 4 million people with full-page newspaper ads in the last three years. We have added electronic billboards, airplane banners and television messages.

We are now providing fee of charge, black, orange and white bumper stickers that say ?Watch for Motorcycles? (see attachment). This is another reminder to motorists that they must be careful and specifically look for motorcycles as well as manage their vehicle appropriately when motorcycles have the right-of-way.

Stickers 001

In addition to bumper stickers, we have stickers that can be placed on envelopes or letters that carry the ?Watch for Motorcycles? message (see attachment). The stickers are in black, orange and white. We also have a version available in yellow and black that says ?ABATE of Wisconsin? and a generic orange and black sticker.

If you wish to receive any of these or be added to our Biker Newsbrief mailing list, please send an e-mail to pan@mfhupy.com and indicate which stickers you would like.

H-D to Shut Down Production for 14 Weeks–Harley-Davidson plans production shutdowns and line rate adjustments at powertrain operations in Menomonee Falls and Wauwatosa, Wis., and at motorcycle assembly operations in York, Pa., and Kansas City, Mo.

The shutdowns and line rate adjustments are part of the OEM’s plan to cut production by 25 to 30 percent and lay off up to 1,000 workers in an effort to reduce output, match demand and shrink inventories.

Sportster and V-Rod motorcycle final assembly operations and V-Rod motorcycle powertrain production in Kansas City, and production of Sportster motorcycle powertrains in Wauwatosa will be shut down for approximately 14 weeks in 2009, including the entire fourth quarter. The company anticipates that other production operations will be shut down for a total of approximately five weeks over the rest of 2009.

“When it comes to protecting and enhancing the brand, managing supply in line with demand is one of the most important things we can do,” says H-D President and CEO Keith Wandell. “We’ve got a great lineup of motorcycles and one of our top priorities is to reduce complexity and improve efficiency throughout our product development and manufacturing processes.”

H-D earlier this year announced plans to consolidate its two Milwaukee-area powertrain (engine and transmission) plants into one facility; consolidate paint and frame operations at its York facilities into one plant; and close its Franklin parts and accessories distribution center and consolidate those operations with general merchandise distribution through a third-party logistics company. Also, in April, the OEM completed the transition of its U.S. transportation fleet operations to a third-party provider as part of its restructuring initiatives.

Since the announcement of the original consolidation plans, Harley-Davidson has determined that the company’s York operations are not currently competitive or sustainable.

H-D has undertaken a “two path” study to determine whether major, additional restructuring at York can achieve cost and efficiency targets to make the operations viable, or alternatively, whether the company will relocate the York operations to another U.S. location.

H-D leadership expects to make a decision on the status of the York operations later this year.

MILLION MILE HISTORIC HARLEY-DAVIDSON TO BE DONATED TO STURGIS MOTORCYCLE MUSEUM–The Sturgis Motorcycle Museum & Hall of Fame will be holding a News Conference on Tuesday, June 28, 2009 at 1 p.m. The news conference will feature former Wisconsin State Senator Dave Zien, who?s ?Million Mile Motorcycle? will be dedicated.

Zien, who is riding to Sturgis directly from the completion of a round trip journey from Key West, Florida to Prudhoe Bay Alaska and back to Key West will meet Tony ?Pan? Sanfelipo, first person inducted into the Sturgis Freedom Fighter Hall of Fame (2002) at La Crosse Harley Davidson in Wisconsin on Monday, July 27th.

The two will ride to Sturgis for the opening of the new exhibit. Zien?s Florida to Alaska and back trip netted over 11,000 miles on the new 2009 Harley-Davidson Road Glide, which Dave picked up on April 6, 2009 at the Harley-Davidson Juneau Avenue facility in Milwaukee. He had over 20,000 miles on the bike when he started out from Key West on July 4, 2009. By the time he returns from Sturgis, Zien will have over 44,000 miles on the new motorcycle.

Gilroy-era Indian CEO Pleads Guilty in Racketeering Case–The Gilroy Dispatch is reporting that Gilroy-era Indian Motorcycle CEO Rey Sotelo has pleaded guilty to conspiracy to traffic stolen motorcycles parts in a federal racketeering case.

Sotelo faces a maximum sentence of up to five years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000. Defense attorney Albie Jachimowicz says that said he expects Sotelo to serve six months or less of home detention.

Sotelo was arrested in July 2008 on federal charges of conspiring with an alleged Northern California chop shop to falsify the paperwork of a bike being sent to Sweden.

Federal prosecutors had alleged that Sotelo assisted two others in the exportation of the Harley-Davidson by supplying false Manufacture Statements of Origin and a false VIN.

Sotelo’s arrest was part of wider case against Robert and Brent Holloway, the father and son co-owners of Road Dog Cycles in Denair, Calif., in which they were charged with racketeering, witness tampering, extortion, making violent threats and trafficking in stolen parts.

There are eight other defendants in the case that centers around the Holloway’s shop and their relationship with a number of outlaw motorcycle clubs, including the Hell’s Angels and the Alky Haulers.

Robert Holloway and a number of the other defendants have law enforcement backgrounds, including two men actively employed by the Stanislaus County sheriff’s department charged with making false statements about the case while being questioned by federal investigators.

The federal indictment alleged that Road Dog Cycles was a gathering place and a commercial supplier for the clubs. In addition to operating as the owners of a chop shop and in trafficking in stolen parts and motorcycles, the filing said that the defendants protected their enterprise through intimidation, threats of violence, violence and assaults.

Sotelo’s role in the operation, the indictment shows, was limited to the efforts to alter the VIN and conceal the true manufacturer of the motorcycle being shipped overseas.

POLARIS Q2 Sales Drop 24%–Polaris Industries’ sales for its second quarter ended June 30 totaled $345.9 million, a decrease of 24 percent from second quarter 2008 sales of $455.7 million. The company expects sales for the full year 2009 to be 20 percent to 25 percent lower than sales of $1.948 billion posted in 2008.

Polaris leadership says it expects year-end sales of motorcycles to be down 40 to 50 percent compared to last year; off-road vehicle sales to be down 21 to 25 percent; parts, garments & accessories (PG&A) to be down 13 to 17 percent; and snowmobile sales to be down 15 to 20 percent.

“Our outlook for the North American economy remains weak,” says Scott Wine, CEO, Polaris Industries. “Our expectations for 2009 remain unchanged and we expect our core markets to remain very challenging.”

VICTORY

Sales of Victory motorcycles to dealers decreased 55 percent during the second quarter of 2009 when compared to the same period in 2008. Polaris says the decrease reflects the planned reduction in shipments of Victory motorcycles to dealers in North America during the quarter in response to dealers’ efforts to further reduce their inventory levels as well as the weakening motorcycle industry retail sales environment.

Although dealer inventory levels are 24 percent lower at the end of the second quarter 2009 than at the end of the second quarter 2008, further reductions are needed given the weak motorcycle industry retail sales environment, the OEM says.

OFF-ROAD VEHICLES

Sales of ATVs and side-by-side vehicles to dealers during the second quarter 2009 decreased 25 percent from the second quarter 2008. Polaris says the decrease reflects the continued weakness in the consumer retail environment, as dealers continued to reduce core ATV orders in an effort to reduce inventory levels. As a result, ATV dealer inventory levels in North America finished 18 percent lower at the end of the second quarter 2009 than at the end of the second quarter 2008.Although side-by-side retail sales were also lower during the second quarter 2009 compared to the second quarter 2008, resulting in lower shipments of the vehicles, the decline was less than the core ATV retail declines. The OEM says dealer inventories for side-by-side vehicles are higher than a year ago, but lower than at the end of the first quarter 2009.

PG&A

PG&A sales decreased 13 percent during the second quarter 2009 compared to the same period of last year, driven primarily by the lower retail sales of Polaris vehicles during the second quarter 2009.

SNOWMOBILE

Snowmobile sales totaled $7.4 million for the 2009 second quarter compared to $6.0 million for the second quarter of 2008. The second quarter is historically a seasonally low quarter for snowmobile shipments, as deliveries to dealers ramp up in the second half of the calendar year.

DEALER RELATIONS

Polaris leadership says it is watching dealer health closely so the OEM can respond as appropriate.

“Maintaining the strength of our dealers is a top priority,” Wine says, adding: “We continue to drive down dealer inventory, with a 10 percent reduction from the previous quarter and an eight percent reduction from the second quarter of 2008. But inventory reduction is not the only area where we are working closely with our dealers. We are reducing the overall floorplan receivables and have even accelerated hold-back payments in the quarter to help with their cash-flow.

“Access to wholesale financing remains solid, and losses across our network remain low, both in receivables and in actual dealer count. We have seen dealer repossessions drop from the spike we saw in the fourth quarter of last year, and still expect the overall decrease in dealers in 2009 to be approximately 5 percent, which is in line with our historical annual turnover.”

The objective to Polaris’ recently introduced Maximum Velocity Program (MVP) is for dealers to continue to grow market share while operating with lower levels of inventory.

SPECIAL EDITION ROAD RAGE M-25 MODEL–Talk about ‘road rage’! Just what a motorcyclist needs for riding on I-5. Designed as an equalizer. Inconceivable and unpredictable lane changes and other traffic related anomalies perpetrated by tire losing, cell phone using SUV driving morons in California (and elsewhere) on the rest of us.

The above pictured machine was designed for that purpose. Each mini gun fires at a rate of 3000 rounds per minute (6000 total). During initial test and evaluation it was demonstrated that a single 2 second burst would and did blow a 40 foot RV with tow car clean off the road leaving an open and unobstructed route ahead. It will vaporize an SUV in seconds! Tests further indicated that after two or three RV’s/SUV’s in a row were eliminated, or “friggin smoked”, others voluntarily pulled off the road and thus became a “non threat”.

ACCIDENT STATS THAT WILL FRY YOUR BRAIN–An update of the Motorcycle Accident In-Depth Study of 921 accidents investigated from 1999-2000 in five sampling areas located in France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands and Spain. Among other things, the European study found that just over 50% of the motorcycle accidents in the subject cities were caused by CAR drivers, with 69% of those resulting from ?perception failure,? which can include not seeing the rider, misjudging distances and space on the road.

CAN YOU FATHOM THE THOUGHT: THEY CAN’T SEE US, BUT THEY WANT TO REQUIRE US TO BE QUIET…SOUND IS NOT OKAY, BUT INJURIES ARE.

– Wear protective gear. The 921 accidents in the study resulted in 3,417 injuries — 31.8% of which were to the lower extremities, 24.3% to the upper extremities and 18.4% to the head.

ANOTHER DISTURBING FACT: HELMETS CAN CAUSE YOU TO SUSTAIN 55 PERCENT OF THE PROJECTED INJURIES AND ONLY PROTECT YOU IN 18 PERCENT. IN ADDITION, A PROPORTION OF NECK INJURIES ARE CAUSE BY HELMETS. AND THEY STILL SEE HELMETS AS THE PANACEA.

BIKERNET PRE-STURGIS THURSDAY NEWS BEGINS

endingshot

Hey,

I had some highly profound statements boiling around in my mind the other day, but I lost them amidst the scattered turmoil of life. Besides what the hell can you believe these days? Not much. So, here’s a quote from Geno’s Old Skool Rods latest issue:

Despite the mantra of the clueless experts on the Evening News for Dummies, General Motors, Ford and Chrysler built the cars, trucks, and SUVs that people wanted to buy. That’s how the market works. That’s also why the seemingly all-knowing Toyota and Nissan introduced full-sized trucks and SUVs to the American market. They were jumping onto the Big Three’s collective force-feed of unwanted vehicles. They were trying to capitalize on selling Americans what they wanted to buy.

How about this quote from the book, “Shop Class and Soulcraft:” I mean to clarify the origins of, and thereby interrogate, those assumptions that lull us into accepting as inevitable, or even desirable, our increasing manual disengagement. Holy shit. Is that a mouthful? Let’s hit the news and ponder the fate of life as we once knew it, simple and tough as masterlinks pounded into hot chains with bare hands.

MISSOURI GOVERNOR VETOES HELMET REPEAL BILL

As most bikers across America were celebrating Independence Day weekend, riders in Missouri were reeling from their governor?s veto of a bill to partially repeal the Show-Me state?s 42-year old mandatory helmet law to allow freedom of choice for adult motorcyclists. Despite overwhelming approval from both the State Senate and House earlier this summer, on July 2nd, Gov. Jay Nixon vetoed Senate Bill 202, denying riders 21 and older the right to ride without a helmet. In 30 other states, most adult motorcyclists have the right to make wearing a helmet a personal choice.

The legislation also would have prohibited insurance companies from reducing claims from injured motorcycle riders, deeming them at-fault solely on the basis that a motorcycle is a hazardous vehicle.

In 1999, Freedom of the Road Riders for Missouri (FORR-MO) and other concerned riders and groups succeeded in lobbying a helmet repeal bill through the legislature and onto the desk of then-Gov. Mel Carnahan, who vetoed it.

“It’s a basic freedom of choice,” said FORR-MO chairman Mark Chapman, ?Another human being should be not be able to make a choice for someone else.”

BIKERNET VINCENT ARCHIVES DISCOVERED– Found this today browsing the internet. it’s a Vincent motor from a black shadow that’s being turned into a speed racer. Looks a bit like a guy saw a confederate fighter but didn’t have 150k to blow on one so he built this instead.

It’s supposed to be in the workshop of a “vintage specialist” named Justin Kell in Hollywood.

?It was found in the nevada desert after being hidden since the 1970s,? said Justin, ?I?ll be ripping it apart as soon as we determine the history and decide which way to take the rebuild. it?s going to be a huge rebuild, but a very cool project to do.?

I believe where it’s being built is at a place called “glory”.

Might make a killer story for bikernet.

–TR

About Justin Kell:

Justin Kell may not be an A-list actor, nor a famous screenwriter or director, but if you’ve seen the latest Indiana Jones feature or Quentin Tarantino’s Hell Ride, you’ve seen his work. Kell was the motorcycle coordinator for both films, as well as the upcoming Star Trek movie. As such, he had the enviable task of building, renting and maintaining the motorcycles for each film.

For Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, Harley-Davidson supplied Kell and his crew at Rank and File Motorcycles with five Softail Springer Classics, which he had six weeks to rebuild to fit the movie’s 1957 setting. “Ideally, we would like to have used period bikes,” says Kell, “but due to product-placement deals and safety issues, we had to go with new bikes.” For getting the job done, Kell credits his two main co-workers: Cretins M.C. member Eric Orr and Paul Greenstein, L.A.’s resident Indian expert “for the under-70 set.”

The fact that Kell also owns his own brick-and-mortar retail shop has earned him his movie-industry nickname, “Storefront.” As owner of Glory Sales and Service in Hollywood, a one-stop shop for all of your Rocker needs, Kell, 38, has rebuilt a lot of vintage bikes, many for celebrity clients. Pressed to name names, he prefers to respect his customers’ anonymity. “Nah, I don’t do that,” he says. “That’s why this place isn’t littered with Polaroids of me with Famous Guy A or Famous Guy B.”

But Kell wasn’t always living the Hollywood dream. Back in his native Baltimore he worked as a plasterer, and after he moved to L.A. in ’98 worked for an antiques dealer. Not long after he decided to start his own shop, and in February 2000 opened the doors to Glory’s showroom on Hollywood Boulevard, where it still stands today. “The first day we had three bikes, a couple of couches, some neon signs and not much else,” remembers Kell. “Within six months we were selling Davida helmets and more bikes. It turned into a sort of lifestyle shop.”

Hypnotherapy is another option. Steve Gurgevich, Ph.D., a DrWeil.com expert, is an experienced hypnotherapist who has studied smoking cessation through hypnosis. He says that it takes just three days to get over the physical symptoms of nicotine withdrawal – think of it as a long weekend. The more difficult part is addressing the habitual nature of the act of smoking. According to Dr. Gurgevich, patients have to be truly motivated to quit smoking if they expect hypnotherapy to work. The habit will not be eradicated in one session.

For more smoking cessation information, consider “Dr. Gurgevich’s Amazing Hypnotic Tonic,” available in our Marketplace. This set of smoking cessation CDs may help you quit smoking – and improve your health and life.

Bulldog Bash 23 – Entertainment preview– This year?s Bulldog Bash WILL go ahead as planned after Stratford Council told the organizers that the latest bid by Warwickshire assistant chief constable Bill Holland to have the event?s license reviewed or revoked came too late to affect next month?s show. ?We?re delighted by the news,? said a spokesman ?though we were always confident the bash would happen. We will continue to fight Mr Holland?s unjustified attempts to review the licence.?

Legendary British rockers Mot?rhead and UFO have been confirmed to headline the 23rd annual Bulldog Bash, which takes place August 6th, 7th 8th, & 9th at the festival’s usual site at Shakespeare County Raceway, Long Marston, near Stratford On Avon, Warwickshire.

Live Music

Mot?rhead?s searing live set on Saturday August 8th will be the closing highlight of a weekend of hard rock heaven, headlined on Friday August 7th by UFO and Oliver/Dawson SAXON, with a fantastic line-up of established support acts on the main stage, complemented by a host of exciting up-and-comers on the second, Area81 Rock Club stage.

Fronted by the iconic Lemmy Kilmister, Mot?rhead, one of rock history?s most pivotal bands, have spent the last few decades bringing the house down with their blistering, blitzkrieg punk-metal juggernaut of a live show since their inception in 1975. If there is one musician who has succeeded in transporting the zeitgeist of the founder days of rock ?n? roll to the year 2009, it?s got to be Lemmy. He lives his philosophy uncompromisingly, his bourbon-soaked skin featuring the unambiguous tattoo that sums up his life like no other motto:?Born to lose ? live to win?.

RIGHT TO REPAIR LEGISLATION INTRODUCED–Congressman Edolphus “Ed” Towns (D-NY), along with Anna Eshoo (D-CA) andGeorge Miller (D-CA), has reintroduced legislation that would make itillegal for vehicle manufacturers to withhold information necessary todiagnose, service or repair motor vehicles. Currently vehicle owners areforced to return to the dealership network to have problems diagnosed thatthe over-the-counter aftermarket code readers cannot read. HR 2057, theMotor Vehicle Owners’ Right to Repair Act (Right to Repair), has 31cosponsors to date.

The Motorcycle Riders Foundation (MRF) strongly supports Right to Repair, and urges Congress to swiftly pass this legislation in order to safeguardindividual vehicle ownership rights today and in the future.

“We have formally committed our support to Right to Repair because webelieve that consumers are entitled to choose how their motorcycles, carsand other type of vehicles are maintained or upgraded. The point of Rightto Repair is to protect the freedom of American consumers to choose howthey take care of their vehicles, be it in their driveways or at trustedrepair facilities, and to ensure that they have access to all theinformation required to complete necessary service and repairs,” said JeffHennie, MRF Vice President of Government Relations.

A recent letter to the editor from the MRF generated hundreds of articlesin publications across the country signaling a resounding level of supportfrom the vehicle operating public. “As the economy continues to besluggish, people are looking at cost cutting, and getting vehiclemaintenance at a premium dealership is high on their list of cuts. Alsoconsider the recent forced government closure of dealerships, not tomention the desire to support small business. All these factors point tothe need for this legislation,” Hennie added.

Vehicles, including motorcycles, are becoming increasingly complex withthe addition of more and more computer technology, which will become moreand more sophisticated and complex in the future. Ready access to accurateservice and repair information from the manufacturers is essential to thesafety and well being of the entire American motoring public.

The MRF encourages all motorcyclists to visit www.righttorepair.org tosend a letter to each of their congressional representatives, urging themto support the Right to Repair Act by adding their names to the growinglist of co-sponsors.

Madrid?s Team Sable takes affiliate win at Faro Bike Rally–THIS year saw in excess of 20,000 riders gather for the 28th annual Moto Clube Faro Rally on Portugal’s southern Algarve coast, and the 18th Custom Bike Show that organizers have staged.

By far the biggest motorcycle event in Portugal, the ‘Faro Rally’ is one of the largest such events in Europe as a whole and attracts riders from literally all over the continent for four days of music and riding.

This was the second time the bike show had been affiliated to the Official World Championship of Custom Bike Building, and the judging jury (custom bike journalists from around Europe) chose “The Paisa” by Team Sable of Madrid, Spain, as winner of the Radical Custom class, Best in Show, and winner of the AMD World Championship Affiliate prize.

This means that “The Paisa” will be seen competing at the 7th annual World Championship at Sturgis, Sd., in August 2010.First seen when it scored a respectable 14th place in the 2008 European Championship, and again when it was one of the selected bikes for the ‘Mad Builders’ Show at Barcelona’s MotOH! Expo in May last year, it certainly is a “radical” approach to what can be achieved with a 1200cc Sportster engine!

SUGAR BEAR AND MICHAEL LICHTER CELEBRATED BY BROKEN SPOKE CAMPGROUND–Forty Years of Hard Work Deserves a Great Party!

Sturgis, SD: On Sunday, August 2nd, the Broken Spoke Saloon & Campground will honor and celebrate two undeniable innovators in the motorcycle industry on the Sugar Bear/Michael Lichter Ride. The ride is FREE and open to the public and departs at 3:00pm from the Broken Spoke Campground on 79 North, just in the shadows of Bear Butte.

The goal of the ride is to honor and celebrate two very important, hard-working figures in the motorcycle industry ? show them a good time, and give the public a once-in-a-lifetime to ride with the icons of our industry. The Broken Spoke Saloon is the place where fans can get up close and personal with industry greats. ?We all read about history, but this is your chance make motorcycle history,? Broken Spoke Saloon owner Jay Allen urges, ?Do not miss this ride!?

Michael-Lichter

mike lichter

Photographer Michael Lichter has traveled all over the world, capturing the spirit of motorcycles and the people who ride them in every photograph he takes. The ten ?coffee-table? books with his name on the cover include two on Sturgis, large format books on choppers, and individual books on builders Arlen Ness, Billy Lane and Indian Larry. Since the early Seventies, Michael has been exhibiting his photography in public institutions including solo shows at galleries and museums worldwide. Michael?s reputation as a motorcycling photographer has led to him being featured in photography, motorcycling and general interest magazines as well as a number of television shows. His photos can be viewed and purchased at: www.lichterphoto.com.

Builder Sugar Bear founded Sugar Bear Choppers in 1971 with the intent to produce street rideable choppers and products, not show creations. The belief that all bikes were meant to have scrapes, chips, burnt pipes, dents, style, and smiles-per-miles has always been the shop’s aim. Sugar Bear?s diligent research and development and lifelong commitment to quality enabled him to create his signature Springer with long forks, zero flop, smooth ride (no pogo), and handling thought only to be available for much shorter forks ? just ask the rider who has one! His work can be found at: www.sugarbearchoppers.com

The festivities will begin at the Broken Spoke Campground at 1:00pm with a Kick-off Pool Party ? including a bikini contest, male pole dancing, German stein holding and more. Then at 3:00, the bikes will depart for the 25-mile ride (traveling away from the hustle of Sturgis) to a real working ranch. Once there, the ranch owners grill up lunch and serve ice cold beverages. As far as activities ? you never know what might be planned at the ranch ? there are horses to ride, barrel racing (with horses and bikes!), wagon rides, you might even find yourself branding a spring calf ? anything is possible and it?s guaranteed to be a blast. As photojournalist Colleen Swartz puts it, ?I can say that these rides are the best thing I do during all of Sturgis. It is amazing.?

Then it?s back to the Spoke for food, music, beer and more good times — including the grand opening celebration of the Broken Spoke Legends art gallery, located on the 2nd floor of the Broken Spoke Saloon on 79North.

Join the Broken Spoke Saloon & Campground for a fantastic day of activities to celebrate the motorcycle and two innovators who have made such an impact on our passion.

The Broken Spoke Saloon & Campground is located on 79 North in Sturgis, just past Bear Butte State Park. The 600-acre campground complex ? complete with swimming pool, hot tubs, ride through bar and more – has extended it?s $99/person camping rates through the 69th Sturgis Rally and has tent camping and RV spots still available. The Campground also welcomes the Vietnam Veteran?s Moving Wall to Sturgis and will host an Opening Ceremony on August 1st. Broken Spoke will be running a FREE ?Spoke 2 Spoke? shuttle between the Broken Spoke Saloon & Campground on North 79 and the ?Original? Broken Spoke Saloon on Lazelle Street downtown Sturgis. Blut

Ujjwal Dey (Dey): Hello Mr. Uwe Jarling and warm greetings from India. Do tell us something about your latest project that you have completed.

Uwe Jarling (Uwe): Greetings Ujjwal,First off, please just call me Uwe :-), the whole world just calls me Uwe so you shouldn’t make an exception :-).The latest projects I completed have been some illustrations for Spiraldirect. They will be printed on tee-shirts or other cloths. Also, I just finished some collectible card illustrations for Fantasy Flight Games.Right now I start sketches for an album cover for an English record-label; I think this is going to be much fun.(http://www.spiraldirect.com/), (http://www.fantasyflightgames.com/)

Dey: How many hours/ days due you spend on an artwork on average? How does it differ from special projects on high profile assignments/ requests?

Uwe: The time I spend on artwork always differs, depending on the job itself, whether it is a book-cover or an album cover or a more simple card art piece. But usually for a more or less complex work I need one to two weeks, sometimes it even can be more.If it’s a simple piece I sometimes just need one or two days. As said it always depends on the complexity of the artwork and not the least on the money I get for it ;-).

CDcover

Dey: When did you start doing digital art professionally?

Uwe: Well, I started my professional illustration career in around 1990 or 1991. In this time I did my art the traditional way, you know using real paint on real paper or canvas. In 2000, I quit freelancing and took a job offer from an advertising agency where I still work as a graphic designer. This gave me the time and freedom to paint what I always wanted, fantasy art. I also discovered the computer as a really awesome painting tool (yes you really can paint on a computer). I experimented some time just for myself to get familiar with my new tool and in around 2003 I did the first commissioned illustration digitally. More and more people recognized my work and more and more commissions followed. This led to the situation I’m in now, I now have two jobs, my job in the ad-agency and at evenings and weekends I do my fantasy illustrations.

Dey: Is your main market the book/ CD/ DVD/ games illustration for companies or individual art collectors/ commissioned artwork? Whom do you prefer to do business with among the two groups?

Uwe: I seldom do private commissions for collectors; I usually just work for my own fun and do free paintings, if time allows it. But most of the time I work for companies, be it in the book-/ CD-/ DVD- and game industry.

Demonic

Dey: Growing up did you ever envision yourself as a professional artist? What occupation did you, as a child, favoured?

Uwe: I really always wanted to become an artist. As a child I read lots and lots of comics, I loved the drawings in the comic books.

I never thought I'd be that good to work for a comic publisher or to create book covers or something that level. But as said, I always wanted to do that someday, so I just worked on it and as you can see, sometimes your dreams of your childhood come true :-).

I’m really happy to be there where I’m now.

Dey: What is you preferred technology (application/ software/ hardware/ art instruments) for creating your artwork?

Uwe: I always loved to experiment, even in the time I used traditional paint I always experimented with new techniques. Today working digitally, this has not changed, I love to experiment with as much tools as I can get my hands on. Currently I’m in love with ZBrush for example, an awesome 3d modeling tool.

But for the jobs it still comes down to painting things, therefore I mainly use Painter and lately more and more Photoshop.

As for the hardware I really need my Wacom tablet (a pressure sensitive graphic tablet for computers). With the help of my Wacom I can paint on the computer the same way as I would paint with traditional color.

DVDcovers

Dey: What tools did you use when you first attempted artwork (artwork could have been digital or canvas/paper in childhood or as an adult)?

Uwe: As already said I started with normal traditional paint on paper. Pay attention, goddamnit.

Dey: Did you train professionally? If yes, with whom?

Uwe: I studied Graphic design and there we had some drawing courses. But the courses haven’t been very useful, so most things are self taught. The rest came with the years and with the practice. I still need to learn so many things, but I think that’s the exiting thing about my job, you are never finished, you have to learn new things every day, and this makes the whole thing that interesting and keeps you in the job so long. It just never gets boring.

Oldman

Dey: How do you keep up with digital art market news and market changes? Is it difficult to keep up with changing preferences in style or technology?

Uwe: To be honest I just do my thing and don’t care much about market changes and stuff. As already said I still have a job as graphic designer which pays the bills, so I don’t have much stress to be informed about every market change in the illustration industry. I only take the jobs I really want to do anyway ;-).

Dey: How would you suggest an amateur hone his/her craft? Is formal training/ apprenticeship necessary/ recommended?

Uwe: It definitely is recommended, try to get a really good art education and you have half of the bill. I didn’t have a good art education, as said my art courses haven’t been really good, but at least they taught me a few essential things like color theory and things like that, but didn’t go really deep. So I had to learn most things myself, and that’s definitely the hard and more complicated way. And it sure takes longer to come to a result.

So yes, try to get a GOOD art education and your start in the illustration industry will be much easier.

Jarling

Dey: What do you do in your spare time for recreation? Any hobbies that you find relaxing?

Uwe: Honestly, I don’t have spare time, but as painting is not only my job, it is my hobby I always have recreation when I paint ;-).Maybe some day I will quit my job as a graphic designer and do my illustration business fulltime freelance again, than I will have more time for other things.Right now I just need the money from both jobs, so spare time is something I just don’t have. But that’s not really a problem to me I love to work hard and long.

Dey: Obviously many people admire your skilled artwork. Have you considered hosting a “workshop” similar to how authors hold workshops for aspiring writers?

Uwe: Honestly I just don’t think I’m a good teacher, I have to learn so much myself how could I teach other people?

Destitute

Dey: Does animation attract you or do you prefer digital paintings only?

Uwe: I’m always blown away when I see computer animations and I sure would love to learn more about it, but currently I don’t have the time to learn such complex things, so I think I’ll stay with digital painting for a while ;-).

Dey: How useful do you find connecting to people through your MySpace and DeviantArt profiles?

Uwe: I think without those online communities and galleries, still no one would know me. I started to post in some galleries the time I started my digital paintings and I was impressed how much response I got. I have to say thank you to each and every community I participated.I still try to upload new art in the galleries but sadly time to do so gets less and less. So I’m currently not really active in the online communities, hope that will change some day as I meet so many fabulous people there.

Daemon

Dey: Are the deadlines given by your clients reasonable or do you believe you could do even better with a flexible deadline?

Uwe: Before I take a job I always see if I can hold the deadline. If I think I could get in trouble with the deadline I just don’t take the job. To hold the deadlines is most important! To get there and don’t miss deadlines you really have to arrange your work schedule very, very carefully.

Dey: How important is a client’s vision in your creative output?

Uwe: Well I’m an illustrator, so it’s my job to bring the clients vision to life. But mostly the art descriptions are very vague and you bring lots of your own in every painting.

Bookcovers

Dey: Is it difficult to be on call any day of the week or do you set your own working days/ holidays?

Uwe: As already said I love my work so it’s no problem to me. Sometimes if the work just got too much and I’m really worked out, I just take a short break with commissions and soon I’m fit for service again.

Dey: Which is your favourite city/ village in the world from among the places you have been to? Why?

Uwe: To be honest I haven’t been much around yet :-(. I was in England and France and that’s about it. But we are often in Berlin as we have lots of relations there, and if I had to choose a city right now it probably would be Berlin. But well, I live in a little village in the south of Germany and I’m happy there as well :-).

Arma

Dey: Which artist do you most admire and why?

Uwe: I really can’t answer this question as there are just too many and I sure would miss some. I don’t just do art I love to see art from other artists as well and there are so many awesome artists out there it just wouldn’t be fair to name just a few.

Dey: From the many wonderful artwork you have created, which is your favourite and why? (is it viewable on your website – http://jarling-arts.com/ ? )

Uwe: Honestly I always like the one I’m working at the moment the most. Once an artwork is done it is done, I don’t have any favorite piece.

AAD

Dey: Lastly, do you have any “words of wisdom” for aspiring digital artists of the world?

Uwe: You want to get rich without working much? Don’t become an artist! You want to become an artist no matter how hard you have to work for your goal?Go for it! You will succeed!

HIGH COURT TO HEAR CASE AGAINST MYRTLE BEACH

Tom McGrath, the Virginia-based AIM Attorney (Aid to Injured Motorcyclists) who is personally representing Myrtle Beach, S.C. residents William and Carol O’Day and 47 other motorcyclists who received tickets for not wearing helmets in protest of the city?s new helmet law, told The Sun News that he is awaiting a decision from the state’s high court involving their case.

McGrath, on behalf of the O’Days, filed the first constitutional challenge against Myrtle Beach seeking a court order to stop the city from enforcing two of the myriad new ordinances it passed last fall to dissuade bikers from attending the spring and fall rallies held there for decades, including the mandatory helmet requirement and noise law.

But the O’Days were also among 47 others who received tickets during a Feb. 28 protest ride when the new law took effect, so they are now part of the helmet lawsuits the Supreme Court has agreed to hear. McGrath said there might be little point in moving forward with the Circuit Court lawsuit now that the high court is going to issue a ruling.

The South Carolina Supreme Court became involved after attorney Thad Viers, representing his brother Bart in a helmet lawsuit, and the group Business Owners Organized to Support Tourism appealed directly to the state’s highest court for a ruling.

The two cases have been combined for the sake of oral arguments before the Supreme Court, and McGrath’s and Viers’ helmet arguments will be heard at the same time. So far, no court date has been set, but McGrath speculated about a hearing in November.

Another case involving business owners suing the city to stop it from enforcing some rally ordinances, including the helmet law, is still pending in federal court. The lawsuit claims some of the 15 new municipal ordinances are unconstitutional because they are vague, chill freedom of speech or infringe on interstate business rights.

SOUTH CAROLINA CONSIDERS LEGALIZING POKER RUNS

Not all of the news coming out of the Palmetto State is as controversial as Myrtle Beach?s anti-biker ordinances, and recent actions by the State Senate could eventually legitimize poker runs.

The S.C. Senate Judiciary Committee approved legislation in May that would have revised the state’s 207-year-old gambling laws which ban “any game with cards or dice.” Although the bill died at the end of the legislative session, bikers were able to educate some legislators that banning all such games is not in the best interest of charities.

Currently, the state’s centuries-old gaming laws are enforced at the discretion of the local law enforcement agency and typically only when someone complains. South Carolina’s Lions clubs have lost roughly $500,000 since last year when state law enforcement officers – responding to a complaint – threatened a club that was raffling off a motorcycle.

Traditional motorcycle poker runs, which have historically raised tens of thousands of dollars for local and statewide charities have been severely curtailed as a result of an Attorney General’s ruling that the events were illegal under the current State statute.

A separate proposal would ask voters whether the state constitution should be changed to allow nonprofit groups to hold a limited number of raffles yearly. Currently, the only legal raffle is the state lottery.

GOVERNMENT MAY MAKE ANTI-LOCK BRAKES MANDATORY ON MOTORCYCLES

Citing spiraling motorcycle accident statistics, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration may require new safety features on bikes. For example, the federal agency plans to decide by next year whether or not anti-lock brakes should be mandatory equipment on motorcycles.

The government report also mentions an insurance industry study that shows that the rate of fatal crashes are 28% lower for bikes equipped with optional ABS braking systems than for those same motorcycles without them.

Though NHTSA frequently enforces the implementation of safety technology into automobiles, their involvement in motorcycling tends to focus more on helmet usage and the prevention of drunk riding.

Anti-lock brakes are now standard on some Harley-Davidsons and optional across a variety of manufacturers on everything from dual purpose bikes to scooters — and in many cases, they can be disabled if the rider chooses.

ENGINE REVVING MAY BECOME A CRIME IN ALBUQUERQUE

Revving your engine in downtown Albuquerque, New Mexico, may soon be a crime punishable by a fine of up to $500, imprisonment and seizure of your bike or car. Mayor Martin Chavez (D) proposed adding a blip of the throttle to the city ordinance listing “nuisances” that the city uses as a justification to seize automobiles. The city council is expected to vote on the idea soon, and may expand ticketing to the entire city.

“It shall be unlawful for any person to engage in exhibition driving in the Downtown Quiet Zone by operating a vehicle in a manner that willfully creates excessive engine noise because of revving the engine to magnify the engine noise,” the proposed ordinance states.

At first, Chavez will ask police set up traps to ticket motorcyclists before going after other motorists.

According to Tim Tennimon, ABATE Executive Director, SB 435 is now a two year bill and will be held over until next session….no amendments have been submitted, so it still appears as a smog check bill. ?Despite the promise by Senator Pavley to amend the bill to be more about catalytic converter inspections, rather than smog check…there have been no amendments to the bill,? explains Tennimon, adding that the bill won’t be eligible to be heard again until January 2010. ?Stopping this bill for this legislative session is a huge victory for us…and a testament to Jim Lombardo’s (ABATE lobbyist) hard work…we really weren’t sure we could stop this bill once it hit the Senate floor…but you guys did it!?

However, Tennimon cautions, there are plenty of reasons to be concerned; ?The smog debate ended up being a noise debate on the Senate floor…and there was much discussion about loud pipes…and, not coincidentally, the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) has just released a new standard for sound tests on motorcycles which will make it easy and consistent to test bikes…in addition, the MIC has called for a focus more on noise than emissions…all of which means that we will have to look at all new legislation because it is very possible that there will be attempts at new sound standards and emission standards…and they could pop up anywhere…Unfortunately, this is the message you have heard from us for over a decade…we must police ourselves…we know you love the sound…but not everyone feels the same way…and as much as I hate booming cars and loud trucks, etc…we are an easy target and those behaviors are coming back to get us now.?

U.S. MOTORCYCLE CRASH STUDY STALLS: EUROPEAN MAIDS 2.0 STUDY RELEASED

The bikes crashed. The data was collected. And the information from the 53 accidents investigated in the Southern California pilot phase of the U.S. motorcycle crash causation study are now sitting — waiting for an assessment of its efficacy and, more importantly, a huge infusion of cash. According to an article in the Los Angeles Times newspaper, ?The long-awaited follow-up to the 1981 Hurt Study is short at least $2 million, and it’s unclear whether that funding will come through any time soon. Or ever.?

So while the first nationwide motorcycle-crash study to be conducted in the United States in almost 30 years languishes in limbo due to differences in focus and funding between government entities and advocacy groups, filling the void is MAIDS 2.0: An update of the Motorcycle Accident In-Depth Study of 921 accidents investigated from 1999-2000 in five sampling areas located in France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands and Spain. Among other things, the European study found that just over 50% of the motorcycle accidents in the subject cities were caused by drivers, with 69% of those resulting from ?perception failure? which can include not seeing the rider, misjudging distances and space on the road.

MAIDS 2.0 focuses on the 100 crashes out of those 921 accidents that resulted in death — 25 of which occurred on bikes under 50 cc and 75 of which happened on motorcycles 50 cc and larger.

Of the under-50 cc bikes, the rider, not another vehicle, was responsible for his or her own death in 64% of the fatal crashes; most often, the rider failed to perceive a road hazard and, as a result, failed to react to avoid that hazard. Most of the fatalities occurred in urban areas.

For motorcycles 50 cc and up, the most fatality-prone class was sport bikes. A bike’s displacement and maximum velocity were not significant factors in predicting a rider’s death. As with bikes under 50 cc, the rider, not another vehicle, was at fault in most crashes that ended in death. The most common rider error for motorcyclists was making the wrong decision in reaction to a road hazard; 44% of motorcyclists also lost control in their avoidance maneuver. Most of these fatalities occurred in rural areas.

?How applicable the MAIDS 2.0 data is to the American market is a subject of debate, not only because the study is dated, but also because the European market is so different,? wrote Susan Carpenter in the LA Times article. ?Its riders are more commuter-oriented than those in the leisure-minded U.S. and the bikes are, on average, smaller. Still, the MAIDS update points to some intriguing findings that, at the very least, could serve as cautionary advice as the U.S. motorcycle market becomes more transportation-oriented.?

Some of the more relevant takeaway messages for riders of bikes both big and small:
accidents in the MAIDS report happened during the day, fatal accidents were significantly higher at night.
– Major roads are hazardous. The majority of fatalities occurred on straight roadways and “major arterials.”
– Get a license. Riders who weren’t properly licensed were more likely to crash.
– Wear protective gear. The 921 accidents in the study resulted in 3,417 injuries — 31.8% of which were to the lower extremities, 24.3% to the upper extremities and 18.4% to the head.

ON THE ROAD TO ROMANCEMotorcycling opens the road to romance, love and sex appeal. Famous faces increase their x-factor when they get onto two wheels on the big screen, and Hollywood has provided us with many cool biking images — remember Quadrophenia? The Great Escape? Easy Rider? And they?ve recognized that girls like to ride too, from stylish Audrey Hepburn in Roman Holiday to more recently the modern Charlie?s Angels and glamorous Angelina Jolie as Lara Croft.

Plenty of celebrities like to pull on a pair of leathers and enjoy the freedom of riding on two wheels, from actors and musicians to politicians, comedians, and chefs have all joined the growing numbers of people who like to ride.

But at least in Britain, romantic bikers would rather ride with their other half than movie megastars like Kate Winslet, or Tom Cruise. In a Motorcycle Industry Association survey, when asked to name who they would most like to take a fantasy ride with, twice as many bikers nominated their partners than petite pop star Kylie, Star Wars? Ewan McGregor, or Bond?s Pierce Brosnan.

So if your partner doesn?t already ride, why not get them onto two wheels so you can ?Get More Out of Life? together, as promoted during National Motorcycle Week in England, held July 12-18??More freedom, more fun, more friends, more action and more opportunities.?

CAGE DEAL OF THE WEEK–Hey, want a really cool, rare, cruiser? I found a ’66 Chevy Impala wagon. No big shakes right? Wrong.

It’s a factory, number matching 396 Turbo Jet! It was a special order back in the day and I’ve only see a handful. Body and paint are original as is everything else. Engine need to be gone through but so what. I’d build the shit out of the engine and trans, detail the engine compartment and leave everything just as it is.

Parisshowcanceled

Paris Cycle Show Canceled–The 2009 Paris Motorcycle and Scooter Show, formally called the Mondial du Deux Roues and initially scheduled for Oct. 1-8, has been canceled.

Held every two years, the Paris Motorcycle and Scooter Show is the largest motorcycle show in France and traditionally has been a launching pad for many concept and production cycles. The 2007 show recorded 383,500 visitors and more than 800 brands on display.

Show organizer AMC Promotion together with participating motorcycle manufacturers announced that they had agreed the troubled international economy would compromise the event. Without the participation of the usual manufacturers, organizers say, “it would not be possible to cater satisfactorily to visitor expectations.”

AMC Promotion says it plans to bring the show back in autumn 2010. That means the event will compete for international visitors with the far larger Intermot show in Cologne, Germany (also held every two years), and the EICMA show in Milan, Italy.

CURTAIN TO RISE ON BELOVED KENO FAMILY JAGUARAT RM?S SPORTS & CLASSICS OF MONTEREY EVENT–American antiques experts and television personalities, Leigh and Leslie Keno to offer their beloved1938 Jaguar SS 100 Roadster 3 ? litre for auction in Monterey, California.

BLENHEIM, Ontario (July 16, 2009) ? American antiques experts, authors and television hosts, Leigh and Leslie Keno are no strangers to the spotlight, regularly sharing their expertise with the American public as furniture appraisers on the popular tv series Antiques Roadshow.

This August, it will be their family?s beloved 1938 Jaguar SS 100 Roadster 3 ? litre taking center stage as it is offered without reserve at the highly anticipated Sports & Classics of Monterey auction in California, presented by preeminent international auction house, RM Auctions.

A cherished part of the family for over 40 years, the beloved Keno Family Jaguar, chassis number 39037, was purchased by Ron Keno in 1969. Ron?s twin sons, Leigh and Leslie, were just 12 at the time however as soon as they were old enough they had full access to their dad?s rare British sports car, using it for everything from impressing prom dates and friends during their college years through to driving it in various vintage racing events.

Though its seasons have been short ? the car has spent much of the past 40 years at the family property in Mohawk, New York where it has only been driven during the summer and fall? it is perhaps one of the world?s best travelled SS 100s. The previous owner shipped it to the US from Scotland and in 1998 the Keno twins took it on the 1000-mile Louis Vuitton China Run, passing such famous sights as the Great Wall of China, Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City. Additionally, it has enjoyed various cameos on Antiques Roadshow.

Whilst it will be no doubt bittersweet to part with the car at the August auction for it holds a treasure chest of memories for the family, the Keno?s look forward to passing it on to another passionate motoring enthusiast for their driving pleasure.

?We grew up in this car and absolutely love it,? says Leigh Keno. ?But we have others and the reality is that this one is a family car ? we can?t just cut it up into pieces so everyone can still have it. We hope it brings the next owner as much joy and adventure as it has to us,? he adds.

A longstanding summer tradition for vintage car collectors and enthusiasts from around the world, RM?s Sports & Classics of Monterey event was the first and original auction held during the famous Monterey Classic Car week. Now in its 24th year, it is still regarded as the ?heartbeat? of the annual motoring week festivities and one of the largest auction events of its kind.

This year?s event is set to offer over 200 magnificent collector cars for auction, with something to appeal to all automotive tastes. Other notable consignments set to join the beloved Keno Family Jaguar on the auction block include: a rare 1952 Jaguar C-Type Sports Racer, the first delivered to the United States and driven by the legendary, late Phil Hill ? then just 25 ? in the 1952 Sheldon Cup to claim the first C-Type victory in North America; a historic 1931 Miller V16 Racing Car, the only V16 Miller built and boasting a fascinating tale of survival; a champion 1968 Chevrolet Corvette L88 ?Scuderia Filipinetti? Le Mans Racing car, one of the most successful Corvette racing cars in history; a stunning 1935 Duesenberg Model SJ Murphy Convertible Coupe boasting a fascinating provenance including a transfer of ownership involving unsettled US Navy sailors? bar tabs in Mallorca, Spain; and no less than 26 milestone Ferraris, including a sleek 1973 Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona Spyder, formerly owned by legendary LA Lakers player and coach, Jerry West.

Also set to cross the block at the event will be a magnificent series of pre- and post-war Ford and Mercury wood-bodied station wagons from the distinguished private collection of Mr. Nick Alexander, with part of the proceeds benefiting the Midland School of Santa Barbara, California, along with a factory-original 2005 Ford GT supercar, which will be offered on behalf of the Ford Motor Company with a portion of the proceeds supporting the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

RM Auctions? Sports & Classics of Monterey auction event will be held August 13th through 15th at the Portola Hotel and Spa and Monterey Conference Center, in Monterey, California. Admission to the three-day event is $40 per person, with children 12 and under admitted free of charge. An auction catalog is available for an additional $100 U.S., including shipping and handling within North America. Noise Ordinance Rally overview from the MMA–The riders received an update on the recent court hearing as well as flyers with suggestions about what to do if a ticket is served. Costs of this fight were also discussed. MMA Board members were among the approximately 75 riders and 64 motorcycles that converged on the Hard Rock Caf? Monday night to show support to the five Motorcycle Activists who are fighting the Boston Noise Ordinance in Suffolk County Court. The formerly self-funded Activists requested donations from the group to help defray expenses. The MMA estimates it will cost $7,500.00 or more to legally challenge the ordinance.

In anticipation of this and similar future legal challenges, the MMA has proactively created a Legal Defense Fund. Riders Rally at the Hard Rock Caf? – Boston Noise Ordinance, June 13, 2009

This fund will not only target the new Boston ordinance, but will be used to ensure that other cities and towns do not follow Boston?s approach. The MMA has successfully beaten back similar situations around the State this year so that proposed ordinances did not even go to a vote. We stand prepared to do so again and again. All riders need to be vigilant in their own city or town, and notify the MMA immediately if similar ordinances are being proposed.

What do you do if you receive a ticket? The MMA recommends the following.

1. Note the time and place you were ticketed (take a picture if possible);
2. Take a photo of your exhaust and inspection sticker;
3. Note the time you have in which to contest your ticket and be sure you contest it within that time frame;
4. Make copies of your ticket;
5. Contact the MMA immediately at legislative@massmotorcycle.org or 1-800- 432-1MMA;
6. Make arrangements with an MMA Sound Tech to receive a free sound check of your motorcycle in preparation for contesting your ticket.

Remember, this affects all motorcyclists. The actual sound emitted from your motorcycle is irrelevant because the ordinance is about a ?stamp?. Without a visible stamp, you could receive a ticket even if your motorcycle is parked and shut off! If an official cannot find a stamp, you are in for a $300.00 fine, at minimum $300.00 in court fees to legally contest it, and also six years of insurance surcharges! Whether you ride a BMW, Ducati or Harley — this affects all of you who ride!

We are all in this together and have to work together be sure that this is stopped in Boston! Otherwise, similar ordinances will quickly spread across the State and beyond, making it costly and difficult to ride. The MMA estimates, after consulting with our General Counsel, that Boston?s ordinance will be stopped in court. We will keep you informed. If for some reason, Boston succeeds, be ready to alert other riders and join the fight! Your MMA has a plan and stands ready to win! We will ask all members to join in active support.

For more information or for questions and concerns, please contact either Dave Condon (chairman@massmotorcycle.org or 1-800-432-1MMA) or Doc D?Errico, (legistlativedirector@massmotorcycle.org).

Media show bias against bikers by criticizing safety message– ABATE of Wisconsin, Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke and Hupy and Abraham, S.C. worked together to produce a 30-second message urging drivers to Watch for Motorcycles. All three organizations have the same goal; reduce the number of deaths and injuries to motorcyclists. There has been a disturbing increase in motorcycle crashes due to right of way violations by drivers of other vehicles.

ABATE members and Hupy and Abraham, S.C. organized the video shoot, which was produced as a public service announcement by TV Channel 6, a local station. Sheriff David Clarke delivered the entire message and was not compensated in any way for appearing in the video. Rather than run the spot as a strict PSA in late night time slots, Hupy and Abraham, S.C. donated commercial slots already paid for by the firm to run the safety message. The law firm pays up to $2,500.00 a month to just one station to deliver this message. The PSA now runs on at least three television stations in Milwaukee and will expand to other parts of Wisconsin and Northern Illinois.

A recent newscast on TV Channel 58 in Milwaukee was entitled, ?Sheriff by Day, Pitchman by Night,? and was critical of the fact that the name of our law firm appeared on the 30-second message. No mention was made by TV 58 that ABATE of Wisconsin?s logo also appeared. TV 58 was also critical of the fact that the spot, with Sheriff Clarke as spokesman, was being aired on prime time, insinuating some type of impropriety may have taken place. In fact, as stated above, those prime time spots were already bought and paid for by Hupy and Abraham for commercial purposes. The firm simply substituted the safety message in place of the advertisements.

Some bikers were upset that TV 58 criticized an effort to save biker?s lives yet the station did nothing to bring awareness to careless drivers causing accidents with motorcyclists.Furthermore, the newscast came on the heels of a fatal motorcycle accident involving Hupy and Abraham, S.C. client Robert Perkins. The Sheriff?s office issued the following statement in response to TV 58?s newscast:

?Here’s the bottom line. Sheriff Clarke is trying to change driver behavior so that bikers may ride safely too. PSA?s, like the one here, are a big part of his educational effort. Sheriff Clarke will gladly partner with the business community, Hupy & Abraham, or anybody else to get this important safety message out. Public service announcements are expensive and Sheriff Clarke believes someone other than taxpayers can pay for it. On June 27th, 54-year-old Robert Perkins was killed, KILLED after a car struck his bike. Let’s get upset about that.?

Michael Lichter’s 9th Annual Motorcycles as Art Exhibition–Sturgis, SD (July 15, 2009) You’ll want to be sure and catch Michael Lichter’s 9th annual Motorcycles as Art Exhibition during this year’s Sturgis Rally at the Legendary Buffalo Chip. The exhibit titled “Rebel Rousers- Motorcycle Icons that Inspired Us to Ride” is a must-see attraction at this year’s festivities. The exhibition will be open to the public Saturday, August 1st through Friday, August 7th, and admission is free.

“From studio to riding shots of our lifestyle, he is a true motorcycle fan and rider. There is none greater than Michael.” Agrees reputable motorcycle builders and industry insiders, Brian and Laura Klock of Klock Werks located in South Dakota. “He is to be commended for all he gives back to our industry. Don’t miss his show at Sturgis; it’s one of the highlights of the whole week, true art from a true gentleman of the industry!”

Michael Lichter is the authority when it comes to the photography of custom motorcycles and the biker lifestyle and this year’s exhibit “Rebel Rousers-Motorcycle Icons that Inspired us to Ride” showcases his talent for collecting the best examples of motorcycles and art to explore a subject. This is Lichter’s ninth year as curator for the original Sturgis art and motorcycle exhibition. In 2001 Michael was the curator of his first exhibit entitled ‘The Biker Generation’ and since that time has touched on a variety of motorcycle themes during the yearly Sturgis exhibition including “One World Choppers”, “Speed Demons” and “School’s Out”. Lichter has had the opportunity to curate numerous exhibitions, and was recently curator of the Arlen Ness “Awesome Ness” AMA exhibition on display in their Hall of Legends.

This year’s Rebel Rousers exhibit will be showcased in the brand-new 6,500 square foot Lichter Exhibition Hall at the Legendary Buffalo Chip. The exhibition hall, built specifically for Michael’s current and future displays, will accommodate a number of revered images and sacred memorabilia central to the biker culture. The exhibit will focus on the history and celebrated icons of the motorcycle industry through a review of iconic motorcycles, art and movie memorabilia. On display will be numerous motorcycles from film such as the Captain America and Billy Bike from the movie Easy Rider, as well as representations of iconic bikes. These iconic bikes include an early 1960’s Honda Superhawk similar to the one used in Elvis Presley’s film Roustabout and a Superhawk which Robert M. Persig rode in the iconic book Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance. Bikes such as Jesse James’ “Camel Bike” and Indian Larry’s “Wild Child” Biker Build-Off bike will also be featured to represent a more modern influence on motorcycle cultural icons. Memorable images will include posters and stills from such films as The Wild Ones, On Any Sunday and Easy Rider. The exhibit also depicts contemporary images and bikes that will likely be considered iconic to future generations of bikers. The hope is that all who take in the exhibit will see something that speaks to them personally and they say to themselves “That is what inspired me to ride”.

Rebel Rousers would like to thank this year’s sponsors including Interstate Battery, Metzeler Tires, Progressive Insurance, Spectro Oil, Renewable Fuels Association and Baker Drivetrain.

BIKERNET CARTOGRAPHY DEPARTMENT STUDIES STATES–North Carolina: A man in North Carolina had a flat tire, pulled off on the side of the road, and proceeded to put a bouquet of flowers in front of the car and one behind it.

Then he got back in the car to wait. A passerby studied the scene as he drove by and was so curious he turned around and went back. He asked the fellow what the problem was.

The man replied, ‘I have a flat tire.’

The passerby asked, ‘But what’s with the flowers?’

The man responded, ‘When you break down they tell you to put flares in the front and flares in the back. Hey, it don’t make no sense to me neither.’

And this from South Carolina:’You can say what you want about the South, but I ain’t never heard of anyone wanting to retire to the North.

AT LAST, LOWER ALABAMA WEATHER UPDATE–Well, after 9 days of record setting temperatures and a heat index range of 102 to 110+ degrees the weather has finally changed. From being so hot and humid you could barely breathe and riding a motorcycle was not one of the most enjoyable activities to do it has now started raining. In the last two days we have had 5-7 inches of rain in our little corner of the world and there is more yet to come. I guess you take the good with the bad when you live in the ?sub-tropics?.

There is an up side to all the rain. It has cooled things off and my husband and I are getting our maintenance done on the bikes prior to heading off to Sturgis. So there actually is a silver lining behind the clouds.

July 15, 2009

Coheelee Creek - creek

The weather is still hot and humid with the heat index around 102 degrees and there are occasional showers and thunderstorms however, it is more like the usual summer weather pattern in Lower Alabama instead of a tropical rain forest. And thank goodness we have not had any hurricanes so far this year.

I am getting really excited about our trip. Going to Sturgis will be a grand adventure for me. I look forward to seeing parts of this great country of ours that I have never seen and most definitely never seen from the seat of a motorcycle.

Attached are some photos of another favorite spot of ours. There are very few covered bridges in this neck of the woods, at least not that we have found. But over in the southwest corner of Georgia off highway 62 near the community of Hilton (about two miles from the Alabama line) there is a park called Coheelee Creek. The covered bridge is reported to be the southernmost such structure in existence. You have to travel down a dirt road a little ways to get to the good side of the park. You are not allowed to cross the bridge on vehicles. The paved road on one side leads to a campground near the river. But it has a drop off from the pavement that is not conducive to motorcycle traffic. There is even a little water fall on this creek and for the flatlands around here that is amazing. Sometimes there are a few people around willing to brave the slippery rocks to go for a swim.

You can follow trails down the creek and see the water cascade over the rocks until it ends up just a trickle and an almost stagnant pool. I guess it must go underground and then on to the Chattahoochee river. Where ever it goes the creek is a nice tranquil spot to visit and enjoy the day.

So much for the LA weather. Hopefully, next week, if the universe holds together and all goes well, we will head to Sturgis.

Harley-Davidson deepens cuts as 2Q profit tumbles–NEW YORK -Harley-Davidson Inc. said Thursday it is cutting 1,000 more employees and lowering its motorcycle shipment guidance as quarterly earnings continued to fall due to weaker sales.

The Milwaukee-based maker of the famous heavyweight motorcycles said it plans to cut another 700 hourly and 300 salaried employees from its ranks as it copes with falling demand for its high-end bikes.

“It is obviously a very tough environment for us right now, given the continued weak consumer spending in the overall economy for discretionary purchases,” Harley-Davidson President and CEO Keith Wandell said in a statement.

Harley, the top seller of heavyweight motorcycles, said its second-quarter income fell 91 percent to $19.8 million, or 8 cents per share. That’s down from $222.8 million, or 95 cents per share, in the same period last year.

Revenue declined 27 percent to $1.15 billion from $1.57 billion a year ago.Analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters forecast 24 cents per share on revenue of $1.15 billion. Its shares rose 31 cents, or 1.8 percent, to $17.80 in morning trading.

Harley has been restructuring since the beginning of the year as it sought to cope with weaker sales. Demand for Harley’s motorcycles, which can run $20,000 or more, have taken a pounding in the recession as consumers pull back on discretionary spending.

Earlier this year, the company had said it planned to cut between 1,400 and 1,500 hourly positions and about 300 salaried positions.

In May, the company said it was weighing its options for its main motorcycle assembly plant in York, Pa. The operations at the facility aren’t competitive, the company said, and a study remains under way to assess whether production will remain in York or move to another U.S. site. It said Thursday it expects to make a decision by the end of the year.

Harley said its worldwide motorcycle sales fell 30 percent during the quarter. That was still better than the industrywide decline in heavyweight motorcycle sales of 48 percent.

Harley now expects to ship between 212,000 and 228,000 motorcycles to its dealers and distributors worldwide in 2009, down between 25 to 30 percent from 2008 shipments levels.Previously, the company expected to ship between 264,000 and 273,000 motorcycles. In the third quarter, it expects to ship between 52,000 and 57,000 bikes.

reduced demand. It said Thursday it will implement production shutdowns at its York and Kansas City, Mo., production facilities, as well as at its powertrain operations at Menomonee Falls and Wauwatosa, Wis.

The Company?s financing arm, Harley-Davidson Financial Services, posted an operating loss of $62.1 million in the second quarter, down from operating income of $37.1 million a year ago. The tight credit markets have weighed on the unit, which has been heavily reliant on the battered securitization market for funding.

GOOD NEWS IN CALIFORNIA– I read the news today. California estimates that they can generate $1.4 billion by legalizing pot. They figure $50.00 per oz. fees plus sales tax. Hum, something about the government in California always bothers me. You know, just the way they look at things. Sure $1.4 billion is a substantial amount but there is as always a much bigger picture. Now I am not a pot advocate. I prefer my intoxicants bottled and imported preferably from Scotland after being allowed to mellow for a few years. Though I will indulge in Mexican imports and a number of brewed hops products. I don’t know the numbers but seems to me that a very large number of the prison population is there because of the use, cultivation and sales of this herb. I am sure that the cost of enforcement and detainment are equal to the number.

Here in Florida, the state will pay a private citizen the value of a pot field for reporting it. These guys make a good living flying around in private aircraft snitching on growers. From the figures I have seen in the news, they evaluate the bust by the joint. Now, lets see, last I heard it cost about $45,000 a year to keep a man incarcerated. I have noticed that a lot of these guys are high profile. Own homes and businesses and pay lots of taxes. All of this needs to be figured into the cost of drug enforcement.

See the figures from the state can be very misleading. The state can generate and save a substantial part of the deficit. They could eliminate a large amount of crime. Not to mention having a huge cash cow grazing in the northern part of the state. Maybe then they would see the light. While they are at it, maybe they could legalize hookers and choppers. As goes California, so goes the country.

Anyways, just a thought.

The world is projected to produce around 40,000 million tons of CO2 each year. The goal of having the USA generating 20% power by wind in 2020 would cut the CO2 emissions by 170 million tons. This is less than 0.5% of the total world-wide emissions.

China built more coal generation plants in 2007 that Great Britain in it total inventory.

Research shows when people have access to electricity they tend to live longer, are more likely to survive childhood, drink cleaner water, eat better and are better educated. For an example: In Africa women carry an average of 20 kilograms (44 pounds) of wood each day 5 kilometers (3.1 miles) each day to burn for fuel.

DR. WEIL FINDING FROM BIKERNET MEDICAL CENTER, Craving Chips? Try This Healthy Snack Alternative– One of the healthiest changes you can make in your diet is to incorporate whole soy foods on a regular basis. Soy is rich in protein, iron and compounds called isoflavones, which may have protective effects against hormone-driven cancers such as prostate cancer in men and breast cancer in women. Soy also helps protect your heart.

Roasted soybeans, known as “soy nuts,” are a great way to get the health benefits of soy while satisfying almost any snack craving. A one-ounce serving (about one-quarter of a cup) amounts to about 120 calories, 10 grams of protein, six grams of fiber, and only four grams of fat – three of them unsaturated.

Roasted soy nuts come in sweet and spicy flavors, as well as regular salted and unsalted varieties. Be aware that some of the flavored varieties may have more calories or fat – so read the labels carefully. For more info go to DrWeil.com.

Riders Rally Against Boston’s EPA Ordinance for Motorcycles; 2nd rally planned —(Boston, MA) More than 100 citizen-bikers and supporters Monday night risked $300 citations, riding into the Hard Rock Cafe “Bike Night,” protesting the recently enacted City of Boston Ordinance requiring “readily visible” EPA stamps on their exhausts systems.

“I’m proud riders turned out and stood up in defiance of the repugnant Ordinance,” said Paul W. Cote, a Plaintiff in the lawsuit filed against the City. “I looked at over 80 bikes, and only 3-5 had imprints ‘readily visible,’ the City could have made over $24,000 but choose not to apply enforcement tactics. The police detail officer was a rider himself, and he acted with professionalism and courtesy,” claimed Cote.

Riders representing the Buffalo Soldiers MC, the Boston Divaz MC, Beantown Riders, North Shore Women on Wheels, and South Shore HOG had known representatives present. Members of other groups also supported the Event. Numerous sport bike riders were also in attendance.

Attorneys Jay Kimball, AMA life member, and Laurie McGhee of Attorney Joseph Provanzano’s Peabody office attended.

Long time motorcyclists activist Bill Gannon of Quincy rallied the riders, through his cancer ridden throat, blasting the Boston City Council who had been invited but choose not to attend the rally. Gannon declared this Ordinance needs to be stopped here and now or it WILL COME to your city and towns. He challenged riders to “Either Pay now or Act” (EPA). The riders then answered by donating $305 toward the legal offense fund.

THE LONE WOLF; THE LONE RIDER. SOLITARY AND FREE – THE UNCLE MONKEY REPORT- They roam the countryside as free spirits, untied and unhindered in what they do. It’s not surprising then that we find such a large number of these lone wolves, independent riders, who haven’t linked themselves to a club or riding group. They are however the first to be there to support a cause. They make it to every run, every event, raising money, and bringing out new riders. These free spirits don’t want to be tied down with belonging to a group, attending regular meetings, planning the fine details of an event. For them their freedom comes from participating, contributing and not organizing and doing. All causes and charities are important and deserve equal consideration and it is these independent riders that help ensure that happens.

Belonging to a motorcycle club or group isn’t for everyone. As with most groups there is a lot of politics and personal agendas that a person has to deal with. It is not always cut and dry with everyone in the group working together towards a common cause. Older members pine for the good old days when it was just them and the friends they grew up with. They feel passed over as times change.

Newer members want to move the club forward, fulfilling the goals and ambitions of the founders but feel overlooked because the old guard are resistant to change. Others still are content with inaction and feel if it isn’t broken don’t fix it.

Equal and opposite, the organizations and the riders balance each other out. The great events and fund raising would be nothing without the free riders that attend them. The free riders would be lost without the events and runs the organizations host. In the end, the sum of the parts is greater then the individuals and together they accomplish things that would otherwise be impossible.

Their mission ? to give you a rally experience reminiscent of the old days, when things were a little more wild and fun! Selected for their abilities and physical attributes, the Purrfect Angelz have performed in music videos, film and television; posed for numbers magazines and calendars; and work extra hard to improve the moral of our military boys during tours to Iraq and Afghanistan. Performances Aug 4 – 7

Monkey Rock Girls ? They will entertain you, beguile you, captivate you and take your breath away. Stunning and tantalizing dancers, models, cheerleaders, martial artists, gymnasts, and choreographers from across the country, hand picked by the discerning Chris Edwards, will converge on the Black Hills and perform enticing feats of skill and dexterity daily at Monkey Rock throughout the entire event.

WOMEN RIDERS NOW RECOMMENDS BEGINNER BIKES–If you’re thinking about getting into motorcycling and buying your first bike, you may be wondering what motorcycle is right for you. We at Women Riders Now generally advise to start out on a smaller motorcycle, one that you can easily and confidently practice the skills learned in the motorcycle training class.

Here are some suggestions of motorcycles that are ideal for most beginning riders. There are certainly other motorcycles out there; some small displacement dual sport motorcycles are often recommended as a beginner bike. This is a list we’ve put together based on what we’ve found are the most popular choices among beginning women riders. Note that we did not list prices because they vary from year to year.

Major Manufacturers: Cruisers Kawasaki Eliminator 125
Displacement: 124cc Seat Height: 26.8 inches
Fuel Capacity: 3.4 gallons Weight: 291 pounds

Description -An entry-level cruiser that’s inexpensive to own and operate, this is Kawasaki’s smallest cruiser. The Eliminator 125 is an air-cooled, 5-speed, chain-driven cruiser with a seat height of 26.8 inches, low enough that most riders can easily plant both feet on the ground at stops. Weighing a scant 291 pounds, it is lightweight and easy for a beginner or smaller riders to handle. This is a great bike on which first timers can practice their new-found riding skills. Finishing touches include a stepped seat for two-up riding (although we can’t imagine riding two-up on this small of a bike for any length of time), and classic cruiser styling that make you think it’s bigger than 125cc bike.

Beginnerbikes

Kawasaki Vulcan 500 LTD
Displacement: 498cc Seat Height: 28.1 inches

Engine Break-In Procedure FROM CRAZY HORSE ENGINES–Lots of us are finishing bikes for the summer. Some of us rev up a new engine then hit the road for Sturgis. That’s not the best notion, unless you’ve got the bucks for the repair or don’t mind breaking down in the desert. Correct break-in will assure longer engine life and will prevent unnecessary engine damage. We just posted the Crazy Horse Engine Break-in Recommendations in our tech department. Don’t miss it.

MILLION MILE MAN BREAKS DOWN WHILE ATTEMPTING ANOTHER RECORD TO ALASKA–Dave called to tell me he had a chirping noise coming from his bike and hoped it wasn?t his transmission. It turned out to be some sealed bearing that went out, and Harley says that has never happened before. Anyway, he broke down at Northway Crossing, mile marker 1264, just south of Fairbanks.

That was on Thursday. The bike was repaired at the H-D Farthest North Outpost, and I assume he?s back on the road.

I?m waiting to hear if he reached Prudhoe Bay. I?m hoping he?s been there and is on his return trip to the Keys. He has to get back to Wisconsin so he and I can ride back to Sturgis for the July 28th opening of his Million Mile Bike exhibit at the Sturgis Museum.

I?ll let you know what?s happening when I hear back from him.

“The handgun would not be my choice of weapon if I knew I wasGoing to a fight….I’d choose a rifle, a shotgun, an RPG or an atomicBomb instead.”

“The two most important rules in a gunfight are: always cheatAnd always win.”

“Every time I teach a class, I discover I don’t know something.”

“Don’t forget, incoming fire has the right of way.”

“Make your attacker advance through a wall of bullets. I may get Killed with my own gun, but he’s gonna have to beat me to death with it, Cause it’s going to be empty.”

“If you’re not shootin’, you should be loadin’. If you’re not Loadin, you should be movin’, if you’re not movin’, someone’s gonna cut Your head off and put it on a stick.”

“When you reload in low light encounters, don’t put your Flashlight in your back pocket.. If you light yourself up, you’ll look Like an angel or the tooth fairy…and you’re gonna be one of ’em prettySoon.”

“Do something. It may be wrong, but do something.”

RAY WHEELER PLANS FOR BADLANDS RUN–Sturgis departure date ?? Route ? Possibility I can the pack meet in-route ?

My Dyna is getting a top end re-build with over 900 hours recorded on a Daytona Twin -Tec closed loop computer .

All of this after running coast to coast and low 11’s at 125 mph in Vegas at the drag strip and making 6 passes at B U B races recording a 147.098 mph pass. last summer

Compression test was 190 lbs. per cylinder .

Leak down was 8% front and 14% rear .

We are replacing valves and seals ( seals that came out were still soft ) , guides are still within specs . The valves had a very slight amount of carbon , intake and exhaust — but exhibit slight wear in the guide area .

Fresh .010 over pistons and rings are on order. Cylinders and pistons look great although we are replacing.

J&P Cycles President and Vice President John and Jill Parham presented this year?s check of $23,000 to Camp Courageous of Iowa Executive Director Charlie Becker. ?We are so grateful to our wonderful customers, suppliers and employees for their participation in our Camp Courageous fundraisers,? said John. ?We are ecstatic for our donation this year to be the biggest in J&P history since this is such a special year for us. We couldn?t have achieved this amount without everyone?s support,? he added.

On June 26, J&P held its 8th Annual Golf Outing at Fawn Creek Country Club in Anamosa. The golf tournament began in 2002 as a fun event for the many manufacturers and vendors who make the trek to Eastern Iowa for J&P Cycles Annual Open House. This event gives J&P the opportunity to play host to a relaxing afternoon of friendship and fun, all while raising money for a worthy cause. Distributors and media from around the country attend the event and contribute by sponsoring holes and awards in addition to making cash donations. When the numbers were tallied, sponsors, golfers and other event attendees raised $22,000 including cash and product donations!

The other $1,000 was raised earlier in June at the 12th Annual J&P Cycles? Poker Run despite bad weather and a rainy day.

la cal show

NEW ON BIKERNETMETRIC.COM FOR ALL YOUR METRIC NEEDS–This week is the LA Calendar Show. This is the show where the infamous LowLa bike will be unveiled. LowLa was built under the guidance of World Champion Metric builder, Jim Giuffra. The work was done by the modeling agency. I have some spy shots and it looks really cool. I have promised not to the let the Metric Cat out of the bag but I do have shots of the bike and ALL the models with it. I will get a poster and some shots up next week for everyone to see. This is a real first in motorcycle building and I am glad that LA Calendar?s Jim Gianatsis understands the Metric market. He has always put on a kick ass show and this will be no different.

Other builders will include: Todd of Todd?s Cycles, Greg Westbury, Chica, Roger Goldammer, Russell Mitchell, Roland Sands and more.

Snotter

I am still looking for a Yamaha 650 special or a CB 750 Honda runner so we can do some more tech articles. These bikes are making a great comeback and for good reasons-you can turn them into all kinds of creations with ease. Let me know if you have one in the California area just sitting around. I know you do.

General Stuff

Greg Gillespie is a true bike and has engraved his entire Panhead by hand. However, I have put the video up because this really is the most convenient knife I have ever owned. If you wear a belt you might as well put a knife buckle on it. It is legal in all states and is not considered a concealed weapon. He has tons of designs from mountains to fish to just bad ass engraving. Check out www.buckhead.com for more and please tell ?em you read about it on Bikernet.

Hang on,

This is rapidly turning into a hot emotional summer. Three weeks ago the stars collided and controversy ensued. The regulators over-heated their chambers and attacked motorcyclists the following week–gotta pick on someone. Then this week rolls in with dark economic omens. Good god.

No matter what happens next, it will be a helluva ride. I hinted at some announcements regarding the run to Sturgis, but the economy is still holding court on our findings. We are also investigating a cross-country run to pick up the Assalt Weapan at Accurate Engineering in Dotham, Alabama. We’ll touch the girls at the Smoke Out mansion, Deep South Choppers, the Alamo, the Bikernet Weather Bureau in Alabama, Lucky Devil’s Metal Works in Houston for the Bikernet Root Beer Float Bobber and peel across the Texas plains to the Billet Bar in the Arizona desert for a cold one, then back to the coast.

Just three reasons to stop at the Billet Bar.

We’ll see. The economy dictates our every move. Let’s hit the news:

PORTLAND DEALER BREAKS DUCATI MONTHLY SALES RECORD–ECONOMY AIN’T ALL BAD–Ducati North America announces that Portland, Ore.-based dealership MotoCorsa sold 61 bikes in June, beating its own previous record for the most Ducatis sold in a single month.

MotoCorsa had launched an initiative to beat the record of 50 units it set in 2007. “Progetto 51” began in early June with a mission to sell 51 Ducati motorcycles in the month. The dealership ended up surpassing the target by 20 percent, in the face of a struggling Portland economy, which Ducati?s claims has the second-highest unemployment rate in the country.

?The program really turned into a community effort as MotoCorsa employees and local Ducatisti helped the program along by purchasing bikes and even trading up for newer model year Ducatis,? Michael Lock, CEO of Ducati North America, said in a press release. ?We congratulate MotoCorsa on its record sales month and appreciate Portland?s Ducatisti and their passion for the brand.?

Pushing MotoCorsa to number 61 was local resident Ryan Dalling, a regular MotoCorsa customer who traded in his 2008 Ducati 848 and purchased a new 2009 Multistrada S so he could enjoy touring with his wife.

?We closed out the month with 61 new Ducatis,? said Arun Sharma, General Manager of MotoCorsa. ?This is a feat we could have never accomplished without the dedication and enthusiasm of the entire MotoCorsa family, both staff and customers alike.?

CARLISLE BIKE FEST TOMORROW–MITCHELL, SD ? The Krew from Klock Werks Kustom Cycles (Mitchell, SD) will be in Carlisle, PA attending the Carlisle Bike Fest, Friday, July 17-Saturday, July 19. They will be offering their TRY it before you BUY it FREE FLARE windshield demos and FREE FLARE windshield installs! Recently named 2009 V-Twin Accessory of the Year, the FLARE Windshield has revolutionized the industry in regards to the Batwing Fairing models and Road Glides. Also at their truck you will find nationally-known bike builder Brian Klock and land speed record holder Laura Klock! They would love to meet you!

The Patented FLARE Windshield was developed at Klock Werks out of a desire/need for stability at highway speeds and for racing on the Bonneville Salt Flats. The “hips” at the outer edge of the shield re-route the wind to add downforce to the front of the bike, which aids stability vs. using a stock shield. The “flip” at the top of the FLARE is designed to kick the air up and then allow it to flow back as “clean” air for the rider. The absolute most important effect is added downforce as verified by testing in the A2 Wind Tunnel in Mooresville, N.C. The results found that with a stock, short windshield there was 30-35 lbs of measurable lift at highway speeds, meaning your bike is a KITE. Rocking the FLARE adds 10-15 lbs of downforce on the front of the bike at the same speeds. Why not add a spoiler to the front of your bike? Downforce is the biggest advantage of the FLARE, no competitor piece offers this level of performance!

The priest said, ‘Confess your sins and be forgiven.’

The priest thought long and hard and then said, ‘Squeeze seven lemons into a glass and then drink the juice.’

The young woman asked, ‘Will this cleanse me of my sins?’

The priest said, ‘No, but it will wipe that smile off of your face.’

Queensland, Australia: A new series of motorcycle safety initiatives– that target novice riders is the latest strategy adopted announced by Transport Minister Rachel Nolan to help combat the state’s rising motorcycle fatality rate. The new initiatives will include a Learner Approved Motorcycle Scheme (LAM Scheme) permitting RE class license holders to only ride motorcycles suitable for their level of riding ability and experience.

Motorcycle riding is growing in popularity with over 150,000 motorcycles registered in the state. Under the strategy, motorcycle riders are also encouraged to protect themselves by wearing the correct safety gear to reduce the chances of severe injuries if they are involved in a crash. These changes went into effect on July 1, 2009 and failure to comply with the new rules may result in fines and demerit points.

Trista2
Krsytal Ann, the 18 year old au pair from Canada, stands topless near a Larry McCullough Custom from McCullough Custom Cycles in Elkridge, MD.

THE FINAL GIRLS OF BIKERNET 2010 PHOTO SESSION–Yesterday I wrapped up shooting of the Girls of Bikernet 2010 Calendar in Louisville, KY. The last girl to shoot for the calendar was 21-year-old hair stylist Trista Mae from Switz City, Indiana. You actually had a photo of Trista in your Thursday news with the Broken Spoke Campground article. Trista is the cute blonde who was working the pool bar at the Spoke last year. Her hair color is different this year and I think she’s looking even better in her bikini this year.

Trista will not be at the Broken Spoke Campground this year. All week Trista will be in the Girls of Bikernet Booth at 4th and Lazalle St. from 10am-6pm daily. Trista will be signing calendars and we’ll have a special edition poster of Trista at Sturgis too…. only 225 posters will be available so stop by early in the week to make sure you get one.

I want to thank Derby City Customs for letting Trista and I come into their shop on Saturday and shoot fr a couple hours. Operations Manager Tony Stewart and the rest of the guys there were very accomodating. If you’re in the area this coming weekend they will be having their open house at the shop on 112 W. Jefferson St. in downtown Louisville, KY.

I also want to say thanks to Fred Bramblett who answered my call for help in the Thursday News looking for a bike to shoot Trista on. Fred was over 70 miles away and with a very sketchy weather forecast it didn’t work out to use his Arlen Ness Custom. I’m saving his info though so that hopefully Trista and I can make it out to Fred’s place for a shoot after Sturgis.

Calendar artwork for the Girls of Bikernet Calendar will be finished tomorrow and the printers get their hands on the files tomorrow night…. Everyone should check out the Thursday News for a full release of all the girls in the calendar. I’m already getting emails from people asking me to make sure they get a copy….

KRAWIEC BEATS HINES AT DENVER FOR THIRD WIN OF SEASON–Screamin? Eagle Teammates Lead NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle Points Chase

MORRISON, Colo. (July 12, 2009) ? Screamin? Eagle/Vance & Hines rider Eddie Krawiec won his third NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle event of the season, defeating his Screamin? Eagle/Vance & Hines teammate, Andrew Hines, in an all-Harley-Davidson final at the Mopar Mile-High Nationals at Bandimere Speedway. It was the second-consecutive NHRA event to feature both Screamin? Eagle V-Rods in the final round of eliminations ? Hines won when the pair faced off on June 28 in Norwalk, Ohio. With his victory at Morrison, Krawiec extends his NHRA Full Throttle series lead to 88 points over second-place Hines.

?Three wins and six-consecutive finals after going last year without a win. That?s pretty amazing,? said Krawiec, the defending Pro Stock Motorcycle champion. ?The Screamin? Eagle/Vance & Hines team is really clicking right now. Winning over your teammate is the best victory I can get because we are so competitive with each other.?

Hines qualified second for the event with a run of 7.342 seconds, while Krawiec?s best pass of 7.363 was good for fourth in qualifying. Hector Arana lead all qualifiers with an elapsed time of 7.319 seconds.

Both Screamin? Eagle/Vance & Hines riders advanced through Sunday eliminations with the benefit of opponent?s starting-line fouls, as eight of the 15 races during Sunday?s action were decided by red lights. Hines got red-light wins over Suzuki rider Jim Underdahl and NitroFish.com Buell rider Matt Smith in the first two rounds, and defeated Team Scream Suzuki rider Craig Treble in round three with a 7.335-second pass that would be the quickest run of the elimination rounds. Hines was on the verge of a red light himself, with a perfect reaction time of 0.000 seconds in round two and a 0.004 start in round three.

?I told everyone I was playing with fire at the starting line,? said Hines. ?But Matt Smith is right behind me in points and had just made a really quick run, and I knew it would take everything I had to beat him in round two. The perfect light was a little quicker than I wanted, but it worked out when he went early.?

Krawiec dispatched MB Machining Buell rider Mike Berry in round one, and got red-light wins over Doug Horne on the Horne Racing Buell in round two and Arana in round three. Krawiec had a reaction time of 0.004 seconds in the second round, his closest brush with a red light before the final.

Hines was too quick at the line in the final, leaving 0.008 seconds early to hand the win to Krawiec, whose reaction time was just 0.001 seconds.

?I don?t try to kill the tree unless I need to, but today we had equal bikes and in the final round I knew the best reaction time would probably win, so I went for it,? said Krawiec. ?I owed Andrew one after Norwalk anyway. I think all the red lights today are just an indication of the close competition in the class right now.?

After eight events on the 17-race 2009 NHRA Full Throttle Pro Stock Motorcycle schedule, Krawiec leads the series with 739 points. Hines is in second position with 651, followed by Smith in third with 559, Treble with 535 and Horne with 506 points.

The next event on the 2009 NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle schedule is the Fram Autolite NHRA Nationals, July 24-25 at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, Calif.

The Screamin’ Eagle/Vance & Hines Pro Stock Motorcycle team is sponsored by Matco Tools, Dunlop and S100.

BUB 7 Stealth EPA compliant Bagger mufflers–GRASS Valley, California based manufacturer BUB Enterprises has added some 140 plus new part numbers already this year, but, potentially, none may prove to be more significant in the long run than their new BUB 7 Stealth mufflers.

Said to “represent the finest quality in EPA compliant sound reduction mufflers” they have been fully designed and engineered in-house and are a product of the massive R&D investment that owner Denis Manning has made in being able to “keep BUB out front”.

Described as being “neither too loud nor too quiet”, the company is saying that “our BUB 7 Stealth mufflers provide the perfect balance of 50 state legal sound, outstanding performance, and the tonal sound quality that riders look for on their Milwaukee V-twins.”

With so many issues continuing to surround exhaust usage on motorcycles, issues which, if the City of Boston is anything to go by, are only going to get tougher for the aftermarket exhaust industry. BUB say they developed and tested their ‘Stealth’ mufflers specifically to meet the requirements of the EPA’s Title 40, part 205, subparts D E, which requires on-highway exhaust systems to be under 80 db(A) for most set-up configurations on 95-09 FLs.

BUB’s Stealths are 4 inches in diameter, with a standard length of 30 inches. Mufflers are available in chrome or black ceramic finish with chrome or black Teflon coated slash-cut end caps. Mufflers have the option of two mounting positions – slash-up or slash-down. They can be bought directly from BUB (only) as quiet/EPA legal replacement mufflers that will retro-fit all BUB 7 and/or other aftermarket true dual exhaust systems requiring 2 inch diameter muffler inlets.

However, they are also available as BUB 7 Stealth slip-on mufflers. Stealth muffler slip-on sets are quiet/EPA compliant mufflers that fit all new or existing BUB Standard True Dual headers, as well as OEM headers and other aftermarket brand true dual exhaust systems that require or have 1 3/4 inch diameter muffler inlets.

Counterfeit Products Still a Growing Problem– While motorcycle dealers who purchase vehicles, parts, garments and accessories from licensed brand representatives are largely protected from the trade in counterfeit goods, the growing trend of Internet purchasing by consumers gives criminal enterprises a lucrative outlet for the sale of pirated goods.

A new European Commission report shows that seizures of counterfeit goods smuggled into the European Union (E.U.) in 2008 more than doubled the seizures of 2007.

The European Commission says customs authorities across the 27 E.U. member states seized 178 million fake items in 2008, up 125 percent from 79 million in 2007. China remained the main source of counterfeit goods coming into the E.U., accounting for 54 percent of the total in 2008.

Although pirated DVDs, CDs and cigarettes were the most prevalent fake goods seized in Europe, the global motorcycle industry is no stranger to the problem.

The Federation of Asian Motorcycle Industries (FAMI) estimates that 5 percent to 7 percent of all motorcycle spare parts traded on the open market in its member states are counterfeit, and that 94 percent of those fake items were manufactured in Asian nations.

FAMI’s membership consists of seven motorcycle industry associations in Asia, including ASIS (Indonesia), MASAAM (Malaysia), MDPPA (the Philippines), SMCTA (Singapore), TAIA (Thailand), TTVMA (Taiwan) and JAMA (Japan). FAMI is a member of the International Motorcycle Manufacturers Association (IMMA), an organization also including motorcycle industry associations from the United States, Europe, India, Australia and Canada.

FAMI says it has aimed to stamp out intellectual property rights violations by combining a task force, greater law enforcement efforts and a multinational marketing campaign designed to educate consumers in each country. The organization created an Intellectual Property Rights Task Force five years ago in response to observations that the greatest number of motorcycle-related knockoff products come from the nations represented by its members.

In June 2008, the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association (JAMA), a body representing the interests of Japan’s four main motorcycle manufacturers, created a committee to focus on intellectual property rights. The committee’s purpose is to create measures to help combat vehicle design imitation and the proliferation of counterfeit parts, create agreements/treaties banning the proliferation of counterfeit parts and imitation products, and promote international cooperation concerning global patent rights through partnerships in the U.S., Europe, China and South Korea.

The U.S. this year placed 12 countries on a “Priority Watch” list concerning inadequacies in intellectual property rights enforcement and protection. The countries on the list include China, Russia, Algeria, Argentina, Canada, Chile, India, Indonesia, Israel, Pakistan, Thailand and Venezuela.

The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development estimates that global trade in fake products is worth about $200 billion.

sheetmetalbook

WOLFGANG BOOK OF THE MONTH– Sheet Metal Fabrication Basics #4-3081

Sheet Metal Fabrication Basics gives the reader the knowledge needed to shape sheet metal without the need for expensive power tools. The reader needs only a simple shop equipped with the most basic of tools. If the first Ferraris were built using only wooden mallets and tree stumps, nearly any sheet metal project can be fabricated with only hammers, dollies and bags of shot.

Master craftsman Rob Roehl from the shop of Donnie Smith, explains the types of steel and aluminum that are best suited to motorcycle projects, how to plan and layout a project, and how to stretch and shrink sheet metal without a power hammer or a Pullmax.

The key is planning, and then shaping primarily by stretching. Eventually the various panels must be joined through careful welding. And though many professionals use TIG equipment, there?s no reason you can?t weld both steel and aluminum with gas welding.

Start to finish projects include the creation of an air cleaner cover, a seat pan, and a complete fender. The book covers a wide range of techniques, from hand stretching with a hammer and a bag of shot, to shrinking with a small hand operated shrinker/stretcher. Rob also covers the correct use of the hammer and dolly, and the way an English wheel can be used, both to shape metal and to smooth out the lumps and bumps left by typical hammer work.

You can learn to fabricate sheet metal. All you need is the raw material, the sincere desire to learn and a copy of this new Sheet Metal Fabrication Basics book from Wolfgang Publications. 144 pages long, 100% color, and over 350 photos.
