Sunday services,

That’s right, bring your Panhead manual and a doo-rag. We’ll have the chips, salsa and Corona’s for communion. I’ll jump right into the meat of the Gospel, for it alone represents the true spirit of the Sabbath.

Hell, I even wrote a poem last night prompted by Panhead Josh’s inspiration. I started it in 2004 and it took to 2007 to make any sense. Let’s hit the news. There’s lots going on with Biketoberfest, Hawaii, Smoke Out coverage and California Bike Week hangin’ over our heads. Wait until you read the line-up for next week at the end.

Lee Clemens told me to drink lots of Patron to relieve the Smoke Out cold haunting me. Maybe that’s the ticket.

The build is flying together now. I should have fire by late Friday.

SUCKERPUNCH/CCI/BIKERNET BIKE FOR IRAQI VETERAN NEARLY COMPLETED– The SPS build sponsored by Bikernet, Hot Bike, Sucker punch Sally’s, Custom Chrome, and J&P Cycles is coming together smoothly in preparation of the bike being presented to my brother on October 20, 2007, at the Hard Rock in Daytona, Florida. We are super excited as this project has illustrated that most outrageous support from our industry. Gotta head back to the Devil’s shop in Houston. He saved my ass. Hopefully to have a finished shot for the Sunday news!

CUSTOM CHROME BACKS THE BIKERNET SPS EFFORT FOR A BIKERNET WRITER’S BROTHER– That’s awesome! Sounds a lot like me work all day and then go home and lock myself in the garage and work all night. It is truly a righteous thing you are doing for your brother. I wish I had a brother like you! I am sure he will be more than shocked when he sees the bike and you tell him it is his.

Send me a picture of it when you get some time I would like to see it. Here is a picture of what a lot of late nights in the garage got me. This was a ‘basket case’ 1992 FXR I bought back in June of this year.

WEEKEND RECOMMENDATIONS FROM BIKERNET– Saturday morning I got up early, put on my long johns, dressed quietly, made my lunch, grabbed the dog, slipped quietly into the garage to hook the boat up to the truck, and proceeded to back out into a torrential down pour. There was snow mixed with the rain, and the wind was blowing 50 mph.

I pulled back into the garage, turned on the radio, and discovered that the weather would be bad through out the day. I went back into the house, quietly undressed, and slipped back into bed. There I cuddled up to my wife’s back, now with a different anticipation, and whispered, “The weather out there is terrible.”

My loving wife of 20 yrs replied, “Can you believe my stupid husband is out fishing in that shit?”

I still don’t know if she was joking …

ABATE OF FLORIDA AGAINST HB137– AMA is against it and so are the Florida motorcycle riders. Phone calls, e-mails and letters continue to be sent to Florida Legislators and many will continue to do so until the Bills Sponsor makes a Press Release saying: That The Bill Has Been Pulled and WILL NOT be Re-submitted With Different Wording.

This action is working and shows what can be accomplished when concerned people speak out! Thanks to all of you that have already contacted people on this issue and those of you that will soon.

Dear Representative Lopez-Cantera:

I have had numerous phone calls about HB 137 stating you have released a letter saying I support this bill. That is not what our conversation was in your office during special session. I stated at that time I would not support HB 137 as it discriminated against all motorcyclists. I also asked why automobiles were not included in this bill. I will not support any bill that discriminates against motorcycles.

I have spoken to the Chairman of the Senate Transportation Committee and he has assured me he will not support this bill as there are statutes already covering this. Since our conversation last week three people were killed by autos drag racing so again this bill discriminates against just motorcyclists and neither I nor Abate of Florida will support it.

Please remove my name from any correspondence supporting this bill.

Respectfully
James D. “Doc” Reichenbach II

CHANGING THE WAYS MOTORCYCLE DATA IS COLLECTED– Washington, DC -National Transportation Safety Board Member, Deborah A. P. Hersman today encouraged the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and the states to work together to improve the ways they collect and estimate motorcycle activity data such as motorcycle registrations and vehicle miles traveled.

“Improving the quality of this data will have a major impact on improving both our understanding of motorcycle safety, and on our efforts to reduce the number of accidents and fatalities on our highways,” Hersman said. Hersman’s remarks were made at the Motorcycle Travel Symposium, cosponsored by the FHWA and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The stated goals of the Symposium are to “continue the discussion on motorcycle activity data initiated by NTSB at their Motorcycle Forum held September 2006, share state best practices in the collection of this data, explore ways to merge the data from the various groups represented at the Symposium, and propose future research in the area that would ultimately lead to better State and National estimates of motorcycle travel.” The Motorcycle Travel Symposium is being hosted at the NTSB Conference Center in Washington, D.C., and will continue through October 12.

BUD EKINS PASSED AWAY– (CBS/AP) Bud Ekins, a renowned off-road racer and stuntman who performed the famous motorcycle jump over barbed wire in the film “The Great Escape” and bounced a Mustang up and down the hills of San Francisco in “Bullitt,” has died. He was 77.

Ekins died of natural causes at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles on Saturday, family spokesman Paul Bloch said.

Ekins, a friend and mentor of fellow biker Steve McQueen, had a stunt career that lasted for 30 years, and appeared in dozens of movies, including “Diamonds Are Forever,” “Earthquake” and “The Blues Brothers.”

Born in 1930 to a working class family in Hollywood, Ekins fell in love with motorcycles at an early age and in the 1950s he was one of the first U.S. competitors in world-class motocross events in Europe.

His friendship with McQueen grew out of their love of motorcycles. Ekins owned a Triumph dealership in the 1960s. McQueen hung out there and Ekins taught him about off-road racing.

Ekins, his brother, David, and McQueen raced as a team in the 1964 International Six Day Trials in Germany, although McQueen crashed and Ekins broke his leg, Bloch said.

Overall, Ekins won four gold medals and a silver medal at the international trials in the 1960s.

Ekins got into stunt work when McQueen asked him to work on “The Great Escape” in 1962 in Germany. While McQueen did some of the motorcycle stunts, it was Ekins, uncredited, who doubled in the scene in which McQueen’s prisoner-of-war character jumps a motorcycle over a barbed-wire fence.

It is considered one of the most famous motorcycle movie stunts ever performed.

Ekins later worked with McQueen in “The Cincinnati Kid” and “Bullitt,” where he performed much of the driving of McQueen’s Mustang in that film’s landmark chase in and around San Francisco, where he hit speeds of more than 110 mph.

The Devil

JOHNNY HUMBLE, THE DEVIL AND THE BIKERNET BIKE FOR HIS BROTHER– I went to Kent’s again yesterday, and while he is closing in on the finish and tightening all the loose ends, he needed a break. We took off for about an hour and actually rode around North Houston to a lowrider/bike show. While the show was mostly hip hop, we did see a few niceties, check the pics I have sent. Afterwards, we went back to the shop where he kicked me out and told me to come back today for the break-in ride on Joey’s bike. It looks spectacular.

johnny pal

On another front, my buddy Mike made it back yesterday from his adventure. While he is safe and sound, his back, ass, and spirit were pretty worn. He had a multitude of problems with the bike, but learned a lot about it in the process. He bought it for only $10,200 and rode it from San Francisco to Houston in three days. Whatta ride.

johnny on bike

Overall, a very productive weekend. We will finish the bike today and then set her aside for Sucker Punch to pick her up Monday or Tuesday. I leave for Florida Tuesday, so I will be out of pocket for a week. Look for a plethora of pics from Biktoberfest when I return as well as exclusive coverage of the presentation to my brother next Saturday. We should have fun. Have a great week!

STOP IT IN DELRAY BEACH… OR EXPECT IT IN YOUR HOMETOWN– THIS CALL-TO-ACTION APPLIES TO ALL AMERICAN MOTORCYCLISTS (from the American Motorcyclist Association): Proposed Anti-Motorcycle Ordinance [No. 45-07] in Delray Beach, Florida A proposed ordinance in Delray Beach, Florida, would ban ALL motorcycles from a five-block section of Atlantic Avenue, between Swinton Avenue and U.S. 1, between the hours of 7 a.m. and 11 p.m. Further, the ordinance would require all motorcycles to be equipped with stock exhaust systems or “…U.S. EPA-approved low-noise emission mufflers…”

The Delray Beach City Commission will meet on Tuesday, October 16, to consider the ordinance. An October 10 article…

…WHAT YOU CAN DO… * [GO ONLINE AND] visit the Delray Beach City Commission website… http://tinyurl.com/37jzzg …and contact each member by telephone and/or e-mail…

RitaEllis@MyDelrayBeach.com
Fetzer@MyDelrayBeach.com
Montague@MyDelrayBeach.com
gpe@mydelraybeach.com
wmcduffie@mydelraybeach.com …to let him or her know how you feel about banning your legally licensed and insured motor vehicles from Atlantic Avenue just because it has two or three wheels. Be polite — ask if the City Commission is willing to ban other “noisy” vehicles, such as cars and light trucks with modified exhaust systems and loud stereo systems.

* Attend the City Commission meeting on Tuesday, October 16 and express your position on banning ALL motorcycles because of the actions of a few irresponsible operators. Again, be polite — ask how the police department plans to enforce the motorcycle ban. After all, if the police department can’t respond in time to issue a citation for a noise violation, how will they respond to a motorcycle passing through the “forbidden zone?” Does the police department have enough officers to post at each end of Atlantic Avenue? If so, they have enough officers to work the district and issue excessive noise citations on a CASE-BY-CASE basis.

* Contact your Florida state senator and representative and explain that Delray Beach plans to ban ALL motorcycles from a public roadway because of the actions of a few. Ask if he or she thinks this is an appropriate approach to solving a problem created by a few irresponsible motor vehicle operators. Also ask if he or she supports a ban on ALL motor vehicles to solve the excessive noise problem. If you don?t know who your state senator and representative are, visit the AMA Rapid Response Center and enter your 9-digit Zip Code in the text box under “Find Your Officials”: http://www.amadirectlink.com/legisltn/rapidresponse.asp

* Write a polite letter [or email] to the editor of your local newspaper. Explain Delray Beach’s approach to problem solving — collective punishment. Suggest that the reason we have laws and law enforcement agencies is to punish and deter those alleged to have committed offenses. We have a court system to allow citizens the right to challenge their alleged violations. There are many examples of collective punishment in history books — none worked for the betterment of the common good.

Do not let this unjust ordinance take effect unchallenged.
