Secret Desert Test Run On Tuesday, January 22, we nervously took the Salt Torpedo into the desert for some passes on a desolate paved road. I can’t tell you where we went. It’s a top-speed secret, that only coyotes and bleak desert bikers know about. What a trip. We did exactly as we were told. We pulled off the pavement, cracked open Don’s trailer, unstrapped the Torpedo and pulled it into the sun. Micah quickly donned his helmet and jumped in, fired it to life and we pushed him backwards toward the pavement. The Cross Country Chase

Kicking off from the Canadian border and motoring towards the Florida Keys, riders on the Chase lit out on their eight-state odyssey just as the weather witch turned the thermostat down and set to soaking the scenery for exactly half of the group’s 2,368-mile route. If you were betting that crappy weather would dampen the doings, however, you’d be dead wrong. Nothing diminished the heightened anticipation of this inaugural run as enthusiastic riders from 28 states layered on weather gear and set their sights on the warm sun and sandy beaches of Florida. The exhilaration of the gathering for the group photo along Saint Mary’s River extended to the next day’s gloomy send off from Sault Ste. Marie in the early morning of September 6. Riders headed off into the predawn darkness along Michigan’s rain-soaked roads and, ironically, crossed the fog-enshrouded Mackinac Bridge just as 1,500 antique tractors were crossing the five-mile long Mighty Mac. Coming from the opposite direction, the annual trek of the tractors seemed perfectly timed to accent the Chase crossing. Adding an air of excitement as the motorcyclists passed the tractors, riders simultaneously checked out the tractors while eyeing the steel grate of the bridge into the frigid white-capped waters of Lake Huron below. The unrelenting drizzle kept riders soggy until a welcomed break lasting just long enough to enjoy a nice lunch hosted at the Hagerty Insurance headquarters in Traverse City, Michigan, which was followed closely by the group’s first pop quiz. Studious riders stood with clipboards, pondering the 10-question, multiple-choice test that was based partly on motorcycle history and partly on scenery along the miles they had just ridden. This exact scenario would play out every day for the duration of the run and would be a general point of consternation for the group.

First-ever motorcycle toy ride at Illuminate Light Show will benefit Mason’s Toy Box

from https://wtvr.com DOSWELL, Va. — Illuminate Light Show and Santa’s Village at Meadow Event Park is partnering with Harley Davidson of Ashland next Saturday to host a toy ride for Mason’s Toy Box. All participating motorcyclists will receive free admission to the park in exchange for a new, unwrapped toy will get into the holiday lights experience for free. Kelley Kassay, whose son Mason passed away from a rare childhood cancer, founded the organization that collects toys for sick children. Kassay said toys for teens and babies are most needed. “Anything to entertain you when you’re in the hospital,” Kassay said. “And then for babies stuff, there are a lot of NICUs that we serve and we always have a shortage there. And children that have developmental delays also require those toys.” The donations will be delivered to area hospitals. Additionally, volunteers are needed to help sort toys on Monday, Dec. 16.

Dallas Harley Owners Group hosts quilt raffle, toy drive

by Kim Everett from https://thegarlandtexan.com The Dallas Harley Owners Group, founded in the mid-1980s, is involved in numerous charitable and fundraising activities. One of the main events is the MotorCops for Kids Toy Run. The owners’ group, the Dallas Harley Davidson dealership and the Garland and Grand Prairie Police Departments work together, with help from the Shriners, to host the event. In conjunction with the toy run, the group holds a quilt raffle and the money from raffle tickets, along with registration fees paid by toy run participants, are donated to Shriners Hospitals for Children – Galveston. Event participants also bring toys that are distributed to local children. The group’s hard work has enabled them to donate $400,000 to the hospital and donate countless toys to children. The late Jerry Patterson and Steve Dye, Grand Prairie police chief, were the two principal founders of the toy run. Patterson, along with his wife, Viola, was involved in getting the charitable programs started. She said that his passion was helping kids. This year’s quilt is the result of 280 hours of work. All of the quilts are made with Harley Davidson bandanas collected from around the world by club members and their friends and families. The design is chosen in February, the quilt is constructed, and the hand-quilting begins in the spring. Julie Steger is the principal designer and constructor. They start early so they can enter their creation in the group quilting category competition at the State Fair of Texas. They have won first place as well as four third-place ribbons. Gloria Barnes, Angela Kennerly, Viola Patterson, Wendy Yeater and Steger are the principle quilters, but a large number of people from all age groups join in the quilting, even if it was just to put in a stitch or two.

Gasoline Alley Harley Davidson hosts 7th annual Toy Run

The seventh annual Toy Run was held at the Gasoline Alley Harley Davidson Saturday morning, where toys and money were donated to the Red Deer Christmas Bureau. “We have to hold the event a little early every year so we can ride before the snow hits,” Bailey Quirico, Gasoline Alley Harley Davidson marketing manager. “Our hog chapter, a group directly out of our dealership, puts (the Toy Run) on for us. So we just basically host it and provide the food.” The bureau is a non-profit organization that supports children and families in need at Christmas through mobilization of community volunteer and financial resources. The total dollar amount raised is expected to come in around $1,000, with about 100 toys donated – the business had toy donation bins up for the past two weeks. Quirico said the event has grown since its inception. “It’s getting a lot more attention. We’ve noticed a lot of other riding groups are starting to do it as well,” she said. “A lot of times (the participants) will strap the toys to their bikes and do little parades. It’s a way to give to children for Christmas.” Teresa Patterson, Red Deer Christmas Bureau Society vice-president, said the organization is 100 per cent volunteer-run and receives no government funding. “The only way we keep our doors open is events like this … and with the help from all our sponsors,” she said. “We completely rely on community fundraising and volunteers.” This past year, more than 1,200 children received presents, as well as Christmas dinner and breakfast. “I think one of the biggest Canadian traditions we have is Christmas. Excitement is building as we race toward the finish line with two more days of riding under predicted dark skies, wind and occasional rain in the forecast. Today’s weather, however, afforded riders their first look at the ocean as they made their way toward Crystal Harley-Davidson for an elegant hot lunch served on the dealership veranda. Riders enjoyed the hospitality and lingered over lunch before hitting the road again with the hopes of staying dry, which didn’t happen, but the sporadic rain served to cool things off enough to make the trip even more enjoyable. By the time the group pulled into Lakeland Harley-Davidson for the hosted dinner, the clouds gathered for another attack and sent riders off to the hotel with soggy duds. Again. So, race fans, here are the scores from Stage 8. You’ll notice the top five have been juggled again but the top two spots are a BSA ridden by Todd Cameron in first and a Harley-Davidson ridden by Jim Gilfoyle holding second, followed closely by a Triumph, then five Harleys, an Indian and a Norton to round out the top ten spots with a good showing from a variety of marques. Cross Country Chase Stage 3

Cross Country Chase riders spent their day in rain gear as Mother Nature dampened the route between Wisconsin and Illinois for one of the longer days on the run. The morning pit stop at Barbed Wire Harley-Davidson in Dekalb, Illinois included hot coffee and donuts served up with big smiles and the daily quiz. Riders have gotten over the initial test anxiety and the rising scores are reflecting their attention to their surroundings and motorcycle history knowledge. Rain had settled down by the time lunch was served under the popups by the friendly folks at Starved Rock H-D in Ottawa. Staff there welcomed riders to the service bay where a bit of welding and wrenching went on before riders headed on to the next destination. By the time the riders covered their 278-mile day and rolled in for the evening check-in at Andrea’s Harley-Davidson in Urbana, Illinois, there was a cool breeze, a bit of sun, and a nice meal. Riders immediately took full advantage of the Andrea’s HD hospitality and set to tending to their machines in anticipation of the arduous Stage 4. Tomorrow will be the longest day of the entire run and, if the weatherman is right, it will be the hottest day the riders have seen so far. With temps in the 90s and only a slight chance of rain, Monday holds the promise of a good ride. Check out today’s scores! Of the 69 Chase riders who started out in Sault Saint Marie, 65 still remain with the mantra of “Florida or Bust!”
