100 word fiction contest continues…. #100WFC Shop before you drop by Rhys with illustration by Wayfarer Woke up to a bright sunny warm fall day in New England. Thought it would be fun to ride west into the Berkshires to visit a friend at college a few hours away. Off I went cruising on my old Triumph and enjoying things when in a matter of a mile or two temps dipped way down. Minus gloves and wearing a jean jacket the cold just ripped through me. Stopped for gas and scored some work gloves to cut the wind and bought several newspapers and stuffed my jacket and down my crotch. I finally reached my destination and it took a while to shed the chill. A Review by J.J. Solari Hells Angel… And Beyond, by George Christie The first sentence of Chapter 13 of this 16-chapter book is….. “Solitary confinement is the worst thing one man can do to another.” Now, since this is a “book review” and since I don’t know this guy, but I do know who he is, mostly from the “news,” once I got to the above-mentioned sentence in the course of my already having read the first 12 chapters of the book – which I was reading not to give a “report” on it but to get some familiarity with the fellow, from, ya know, his own self, rather than from the news…….where was I. Oh yeah: so I’m reading this here book, and most of it has been read and stuff, I’m almost done, and I’m goin’ along fine, and then I get to this sentence, the opening sentence of chapter 13. He recently converted from Liberty Island Publishing to Wolfpack and this is book three in the series Bad Road Rising about a biker/private investigator. Wolfpack currently has over 100 authors cranking out adventure books, including biker novels. I don’t know if his other books are centered around the Rock and Roll music industry, but this one is. I tried to look up some of the groups mentioned and I’m not sure where fiction and reality meet. But if you’re a fan of ‘70s Rock and Roll, this puppy will keep you enthralled as Josh, the biker investigator finds himself chasing song rights. Hey, This is another fascinating week. I’m reading Deadwood, the Golden Years, by Watson Parker. It’s basically a history of the region and mining, the impact on the region and the Indians. Since I’m trying like hell to move there, I need to know. I’m also reading the Moral Animal, Why We Are the Way We Are, the New Science of Evolutionary Psychology. It’s a heady book about us and where we come from and how we got here. That term natural selection comes up over and over. Did you know that 99 percent of all species on the planet do it the same way from a wasp to a human. It’s also about the differences between men and women. Speaking of Magazines, another motorcycle magazine, Cycle World bit the dust last week, maybe two. The new Easyriders seems to be stumbling, although it never got off the dime over the last couple of years. A lot of talk, a couple of parties and very little action. Ah, but I just got a peek at the new Choppers magazine, issue 2 and the new issue 3. This is tough. Cary Brobeck, the owner and editor only prints maybe 2,000 copies and attempts to sell them mail order. That’s a tough one, for lots of reasons. It’s all What We Make of It! Hey, Life is amazing. We’re in the middle of a Pandemic and J&P had their best single day sales record in the history of the company. And now J&P is owned by another company. Get this, boat sales have gone through the roof. It’s one way a family can play together and not run into nasty crowds. One manufacturer launched their new models way before the end of the year. Motorcycles have a similar blessing, that’s why Rich is having a banner year at American Biker in Charleston, SC, and Junior, at Lifestyle Cycles in SoCal is kicking ass in Orange County, California. It’s about embracing what’s available. A brother has an event magazine. No events, no business, but that’s not the case. He’s going to start covering underground events. He’s also going to interview big event promoters about their struggle and what they need. Hell, Scott Jacobs was making bank on Cruise line art auctions. That’s gone for now, but Scott, Sharon and their daughters opened a brewery restaurant and bakery in Deadwood and they are kicking ass. There doesn’t seem to be any Covid around here. It’s amazing. Cruise ships don’t need to set idle. Hell, one cruise ship could hold three separated conventions at the same time and stay in dock. Safety measures on one of those massive ships could be a breeze because of the compartments. Everything would be completely contained. But riding is the best. Feel free, in the wind and social distancing is not a problem at 90mph. These Are Still the Best of Times with News from Around the Globe Hey, I could go in a lot of bummer directions today, but that misses the major point. We are absolutely living in the best of times, yet I suppose some folks are bored, so they need attack shit. But I am moved by the brothers and sisters who recognize our flag, our monuments, our heritage and all the greatness flourishing in this country. I’m hiding out in Deadwood, South Dakota and it’s crowded with folks and bikers who have come to smell the Jack Pine trees, ride through amazing highways, inhale the history of the Badlands and check the action in Sturgis. We will get through this virus thing and party once more. In the meantime, the best things you can do to stay healthy and safe are to work out and ride motorcycles.
