Pentagon rejects permit request by veterans group for Memorial Day motorcycle ride

by Nikki Wentling from https://www.stripes.com WASHINGTON – The Defense Department rejected a request from organizers of a traditional Memorial Day weekend motorcycle ride in the nation’s capital, throwing logistics of the event into uncertainty just weeks before it is scheduled to take place. Motorcyclists typically use the Pentagon’s parking lot as a staging area for the ride, but defense officials denied the permit application Friday for this year’s event. Officials cited the ongoing coronavirus pandemic and the size of the expected crowd as the reason. Despite the denial, thousands of motorcyclists are planning to gather in Washington during Memorial Day weekend. As of Monday, organizers didn’t know where to gather the riders before and after they drive along the National Mall. AMVETS, a national veterans organization, is coordinating the motorcycle ride. The group said it was committed to still running the event on May 30 and organizers were searching Monday for a backup plan. “There are no options with as much space and convenient routes to the memorials, meaning it will be more difficult, disruptive, and expensive than if the Pentagon parking lots were available,” said Joe Chenelly, national executive director of AMVETS. The group criticized the Pentagon’s slow decision-making process. Chenelly said he applied in July to use the Pentagon parking lot on May 30. He was expecting to hear back by January. Chenelly told the Pentagon last month that he needed an answer by April 16. Americade reschedules 2021 motorcycle rally for Sept. 21-25

from https://www.news10.com After last year’s rally being canceled, the 2021 Americade Motorcycle Touring Rally is playing things as safe as possible in order to rev the engines around the COVID-19 pandemic. The 38th annual Americade rally has been rescheduled from its original planned June dates to Sept. 21-25, according to event manager Christian Dutcher. That additional time was added to make the difference in safety confidence for riders, vendors, and the village of Lake George. “We want to make 100% sure that a 2021 Americade will happen, but we’re not confident an event of this size will be permissible in June,” said Dutcher. “But, moving it to September gives us a very high likelihood of it happening. And, September is also a perfect time of year for riding, with mild temperatures, no rain, and foliage season beginning. It should be beautiful.” Americade said that the decision also helped them to secure certain venues, some of which can more easily agree to involvement with more time for vaccines to be administered across the state and nation, and ideally for coronavirus restrictions to be lifted. The new dates also allow riders and visitors to enjoy the village during the fall, not too far past the summer tourist season, without bumping heads against Labor Day weekend. “We’re very lucky to have found a 2021 date that works for the community and for the motorcycle industry,” said Dutcher. “I feared we may have to cancel until Americade 2022, but miraculously we are able to slide it into September.”

Dakar 2021: Honda registers back-to-back win in motorcycle class

from https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com Argentine Kevin Benavides, riding a Honda, on Friday won the motorcycle category of the 2021 Dakar Rally becoming the first South American to achieve the feat. Ricky Brabec, the 2020 champion in the motorcycle class, finished second to teammate Kevin Benavides to clutch the first one-two Dakar Rally finish for Honda since 1987. Sam Sunderland, the 2017 champion in the category, finished third riding a KTM. Benavides clinched the title on the 12th and the final stage of the category held on Friday. Honda has now registered a back-to-back win in the motorcycle class. The finish of the final stage was completely overshadowed by the death of the French rider, Pierre Cherpin, who had been in an induced coma since his crash on the 7th stage. “On stage five I was worried because I crashed so fast and hit my head and my ankle and felt a lot of pain. On that day I said maybe the Dakar is finished for me. But I continued pushing. I still have some pain, but at the moment I am more happy than in pain,” said Kevin Benavides after the finish.

Destination Daytona Biketoberfest 2020

The city of Daytona restricted vendor permits during Biketoberfest this year. Bummer. They attempted to shut the event down, but the riders kept coming. A result of severe lock-down meant no vendors at the speedway, boardwalk, main street etc. Events did not happen or were moved. But wait! Peel Ferry Route Route Distance: 113 miles with 378 curves. Gasoline Locations: Harrison, Bergman, Forsyth, MO and Branson, MO Time Frame: 2 hours, 58 minutes If you haven’t experienced the Peel Ferry Route, you haven’t experienced the most unique route in the Ozarks. The Peel Ferry was developed when the White River was dammed to make Bull Shoals Lake. The lake now covers AR Highway 125 leading into Missouri. To compensate for the road loss, the Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department created the ferry to transport vehicles across the lake into Missouri. There is no charge for the ferry ride. Just pull up to the landing, wait for the ferry to arrive (about every 20 minutes) and enjoy a ride across the lake. The route takes you on a wonderful ride through the Missouri countryside before arriving in Forsyth, MO and Branson, MO. Enjoy the great shopping, dining, and shows in Branson. Directions: The route will start by departing Harrison on Scenic Highway 7 North. Follow Highway 7 to Highway 14 East. Follow Highway 14 for a very short distance to AR Highway 268 North. Highway 268 North will intersect with AR Highway 125 where it will pass the Corps of Engineers Park on the right side. Highway 125 dead-ends at the Peel Ferry Crossing. Once you are on the Missouri side of the lake, continue traveling on Missouri Highway 125 to Highway 160 West. Highway 160 will intersect Highway 76 West just east of Forsyth, Missouri. Take Highway 76 West through Branson until it intersects with Highway 65 South. Be sure to enjoy Branson before heading south on U.S. Highway 65 to Harrison.

Now it’s the 26th and CNN is screaming outbreak from Sturgis Rally because they are claiming 70 cases showed up around the country. They admitted, 450,000 attended the rally. Hell, the folks who came down with it could have been anywhere from Texas to Oregon. I spoke to Dr. Hamster, our expert in the field of riding, “Out of 450,000, that is statistically an insignificant number.
