In the Cantina – Future of Automobile Conference

All the Best Minds Met at the Petersen Museum and Discussed the Wrong Topics

Recently the Petersen Museum proposed a symposium to study the future of Automobiles with leaders in the industry. I was dying to be there to listen to vehicle designers discuss the future of the automobile and travel. I’m going to post some of the YouTube links here to allow you to watch the findings. Below is the design and my take on this effort.

The Future of the Automobile Conference, held at the Petersen Automotive Museum, brings together immersive and inspirational talks, demos, test drives and exhibitions to give a glimpse into the future of our mobility. The conference explores the brave new world of the personal transportation revolution that is set to transform every city in the world.

The mindset that old bikes should be entombed in shrines has shifted quite dramatically over the last decade, due in no small part to the efforts of one very quiet, unassuming antique enthusiast. Sturgis resident, Lonnie Isam Jr., sparked a worldwide age of enlightenment with his opinion that old motorcycles should be allowed to live out their time here on earth as they were intended: in the wind. He set about sharing that view with riders around the world and now, every other year since 2010, antique motorcycle owners take their ancient machines out on America’s back roads to prove their mechanical marvel’s mettle and that of themselves, as well.

Dale Walksler to Receive AMCA “Legends Award”

The Antique Motorcycle Club of America, Legends Chapter, has announced that Dale Walksler, founder and curator of Dale’s Wheels Through Time Museum has been chosen as the recipient of their 2019 “Legends Award.”

Founded in 2016, the Legends Chapter, based in South Carolina, is committed to the love and collection of antique motorcycles. The “Legends Award” was developed to be given away each year to a different person or organization as a way to honor those who have made significant impacts on motorcycle history. The recipient of the award is recognized at a special ceremony and receives the “Legends Trophy,” a perpetual award to be kept for a year.

The trophy is a tribute in and of itself, containing the names of all the previous winners, as well as honoring legendary motorcycle world-record holder Burt Monroe. The trophy is topped with a copy of Monroe’s connecting rods and a hand-crafted replica of his world-famous streamliner motorcycle.

Walksler was selected for this year’s award because of his over 52-year commitment to preserving, collecting, and sharing the history of American motorcycles and American transportation history.

The result of this decade’s long passion is evidenced in Walksler’s Wheels Through Time Museum, recognized by many as the world’s premier collection of rare and vintage motorcycles. The museum displays over 350 all-American made machines and welcomes over 100,000 visitors annually.

In addition to his countless hours committed to preservation, Walksler has dedicated his life to educating future generations on the history, beauty, and craftsmanship of the American motorcycle and to increase awareness of the sport of motorcycling.

The award ceremony will be on Saturday, May 25, 2019, at 1:00 pm at Dale’s Wheels Through Time Museum in Maggie Valley, NC. The ceremony will coincide with the museum’s special Memorial Day weekend celebration featuring The American Motor Drome Company’s “Wall of Death,” a motorcycle thrill show featuring motorcycles driven on a 15-foot vertical wall, who will be performing free hourly shows all weekend long.

Saturday, June 29, is the once a year chance to maximize your motorcycle history experience at the National Motorcycle Museum; the all-day Saturday Bike Show, Car Display & Swap Meet outside are free and Museum admission will be discounted to $10.00. Special guests Frank Fritz and Dave Ohrt will share American picking stories from over ten years of digging through America’s old treasures.

100 Year History of Motorcycle “Cannonball” Run Records; presentation by Carl Reese

Carl Reese is a multiple Guinness World Record holding professional endurance driver. Reese and his fiancee Deena Mastracci have set multiple world records to bring attention to Motorcycle Relief Project, a US-based charity that helps combat veterans with PTSD.

You’ll also have time to walk through the Museum, check out over 500 great old motorcycles and thousands of pieces of art, advertising, apparel and great memorabilia on display.

Lifetime Achievement Award Recipient – Gloria Struck

The Sturgis Motorcycle Museum & Hall of Fame is featuring Hall of Fame Highlights of this year’s outstanding new group of inductees. Here is a glimpse at what they had to say. For the full story join us at the 2019 Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony (tickets available below).  Congratulations to this year’s Lifetime Achievement Award Recipient – Gloria Struck.

While Gloria Tramontin Struck came from a motorcycling family, she didn’t originally have any burning desire to ride. Gloria was born in 1925 behind her family’s business, Lexington Cycle Shop, in Clifton, New Jersey. The business had been selling bicycles and Excelsior-Henderson motorcycles since 1915.

In 1946, at age 21, Gloria joined the Motor Maids that had just started in 1941. She and the founder’s daughter, Betty Fauls, are the longest standing members still riding.

Gloria has logged over 500 thousand miles, riding all 48 continental states many times over. Gloria’s family shares her love of riding. Her daughter Lori is also a Motor Maid and can always be seen riding with Gloria.

Harley-Davidson and the Motorcycle Arts Foundation Announce the Opening of Electric Revolution, the World’s First Museum Exhibit Exclusively Featuring Electric Motorcycles, opening April 6, 2019 at Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles

LOS ANGELES, March 26, 2019 /PRNewswire/ — The Motorcycle Arts Foundation (MAF) and Harley-Davidson announced today the opening of Electric Revolution, the world’s first museum exhibition exclusively featuring electric motorcycles. This exhibit, which is supported by Harley-Davidson, will open at the Richard Varner Family Gallery at the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles, California on April 6, 2019. Curated by MAF co-founder Paul d’Orléans, the exhibit will explore the history and current state of the electric motorcycle and e-bike industry with 21 examples of 2-wheeled electric vehicles from both custom builders and established manufacturers.

Zero-emission vehicles have become a prominent part of the transportation landscape, and electric motorcycles and e-bikes are one of the fastest growing sectors in this quickly evolving market. The exhibit assembles a dynamic mix of production, racing, prototype and custom electric motorcycles from world renowned manufacturers and builders in the EV space including Harley-Davidson, CAKE, Specialized Bicycle Components, Roland Sands Design, Curtiss Motorcycles, Alta Motors, Joey Ruiter, and Noel Connolly.

Harley-Davidson is the lead sponsor for this exhibit and has provided three recent prototypes from their electric portfolio, including the 2020 LiveWire, which will be available to the public in Fall 2019.

“We are creating history with the world’s first exhibition of any type to feature two-wheeled electric vehicles exclusively,” states curator Paul d’Orléans. “The electric motorcycle industry is exploding with new players investing in an electric future, and this exhibit will showcase contemporary manufacturers as the trail blazers of the industry and pay homage to electric pioneers.”

“We are thrilled to support the Motorcycle Arts Foundation and participate in the Electric Revolution exhibition at the Petersen Automotive Museum,” states Harley-Davidson Senior Vice President of Marketing and Brand Heather Malenshek. “Harley-Davidson is at the forefront of the changing consumer landscape within motorcycles and we are excited to showcase our halo product, LiveWire, within the powerful narrative this exhibit presents to the public.”

The MAF is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to the preservation and distribution of motorcycle arts. Electric Revolution will be the second major public project for the foundation. Their first exhibition project, Custom Revolution, just ended its year-long run at the Petersen Museum, and was one of the most important cultural events for motorcycles in the last 25 years. Electric Revolution is produced by the Motorcycle Arts Foundation and Sasha Tcherevkoff.

The opening night VIP and press reception will be held on April 4, 2019 from 6:30-10pm. The event will be attended by the world’s most talented builders, designers, and thought leaders in the electric vehicle industry. The evening will feature exclusive access to the new exhibition, music, food and drinks by the legendary Drago Ristorante, and a live “electrifying” panel discussion moderated by Paul d’Orléans.

I got to thinking the other day. Bikernet and being a member of Bandit’s Cantina makes you a member of a radical, freedom fighter group. I’ve often been pointed at by other agencies as a notorious helmet law fighter, a freedom fighter, a gun owner and supporter, a veteran, and a climate denier.

That puts you in an elite group of people who don’t believe in doomsday because your wife drives an SUV. It places you squarely with folks who don’t want to torture the entire population with laws that might save one life or kill another. It puts you in a group who believes in the freedom to build whatever you want, to take risks with your life, to protect yourself and your family and to ride with the wind. Sounds good to me. Let’s hit the news.
