Jawa Motorcycles to launch in Europe – Rival Royal Enfield

Jawa Motorcycles’ European exports will start with Jawa 300 aka Jawa Classic

Classic Legends, owned by Mahindra & Mahindra group, brought down Jawa Motorcycles to the Indian market back in November 2018. As a first, two motorcycles were launched as direct rivals to Royal Enfield’s ‘350’ range: Jawa 42 and ‘Jawa’ (a.k.a. ‘Jawa Classic’ or ‘300’). Prices for the initial BS4 single-channel ABS models stood at Rs 1.55 lakh and Rs 1.64 lakh, respectively.

Either motorcycle was recently updated to BS6 specifications and prices increased to Rs 1.74 lakh and 1.83 lakh, respectively, for their dual-channel ABS variants. Meanwhile, Jawa Perak bobber was launched towards 2019 end as the Czech-origin brand’s first BS6 product, at a price tag of Rs 1.95 lakh. All prices mentioned here are ex-showroom.

Jawa Motorcycles India plans to commence its European export operations soon with Jawa Classic as a start. The motorcycle has been already homologated for European roads. Compared to its original Indian specifications, Euro-spec Jawa 300 has received some minor updates to comply with local motor vehicle norms. Visually, there are no changes and Jawa Motorcycles is expected to introduce the same colour choices available in India.

There is a good demand for classic motorcycles in Europe and the market has already proved to be a success for modern classics. For the same reason, major names in industry have introduced a range of interesting products in this genre. Honda Motorcycle could even bring back iconic CB series in the not-too-distant future.

Coming back to Jawa Motorcycles, both its entry-level products are powered by a 293cc liquid-cooled DOHC single-cylinder motor derived from Mahindra Mojo’s power plant. The engine, in its latest BS6 format, makes 27bhp and 28Nm of torque while mated to a 6-speed transmission. Jawa Perak gets a re-bored 334cc version of the same unit, mated to 6-speed gearbox. Power figures are significantly high at 30bhp and 31Nm.

In European markets as well, Jawa 300 will lock horns with Royal Enfield Bullet Classic 350. At present, Jawa motorcycle is easily a better choice compared to the current-gen UCE ‘350’ Royal Enfield models. However, the story might be different once Royal Enfield launches its next-gen ‘350’ line-up starting with Royal Enfield Meteor 350.

One of the major challenges faced by Jawa Motorcycles India was delivery times. At various occasions, buyers had even cancelled their bookings due to unreasonably long waiting periods. Jawa plans to address this issue by ramping up its production capacity. The industry is currently facing a new challenge in the form of COVID-19.

2020 Suzuki Burgman 200 unveiled

Suzuki’s new Burgman 200 churns out 17.7bhp and 18Nm of torque from a 200cc liquid-cooled engine

Suzuki Motorcycle has unveiled its new Burgman 200 for global markets. The 2020MY max-scooter might not make it to our market (in the foreseeable future) unlike its lesser 125cc sibling, Burgman Street. The Suzuki Burgman Street (now in BS6 format), although not exactly a Burgman sibling but an Access 125 in a different avatar, introduced a new genre of scooters to the wider Indian mass. This was something which the old, large and expensive Kinetic Blaze could not do.

The 2020 Suzuki Burgman 200 is mechanically identical to its previous version. A 200cc liquid-cooled single-cylinder generates 17.7bhp and 18Nm torque while mated to a CVT. It gets 13-inch and 12-inch alloy wheels at the front and rear, respectively. The scooter boasts of dual-channel ABS thanks to twin 240mm discs at the front and a 240mm rotor at the rear. Suspension duties are carried out by conventional telescopic forks and a monoshock.

In its global spec, the maxi-scooter is available in three colour choices: White, Black and Silver. As mentioned before, the chances of it coming to our market are slim especially when considering the current state of affairs. Global automotive industries have been badly affected by COVID-19 and many brands are trying their best to minimise losses. In India, automakers are collectively losing about Rs 1000 crore each day. On the other hand, several dealerships are on the verge of shutting shops forever.

Thanks to BS6 emission norms, the Indian scooter market has witnessed a rapid evolution. Besides offering new features and styling, almost all the new BS6 scooters come with FI. Some scooters have a lost a bhp or two but let’s face it, most of the mainstream scooters feel exactly the same to ride.

Still, there are certain ‘sporty’ choices to appeal to a smaller group of buyers. Examples include the Aprilia SR 160, TVS NTorq 125 Race Edition and to an extent, Yamaha Ray ZR Street Rally. Meanwhile, Piaggio’s Vespa range is a premium and elegant choice. Sales of these scooters are relatively less but just enough to remain on the market. Hence, there is a small potential for premium scooters in India.

However, the shift towards high-displacement CVT scooters should be gradual for them to be sensible alternatives to motorcycles coming at a similar price range. At the moment, 125cc scooters are the best performers on the sales chart and it would take some time for the market to see the same demand for 200cc scooters.

Ducati Multistrada V4, an ADV with hyper bike performance

The upcoming Ducati Multistrada V4 is expected to make global debut at the coming EICMA 2020 motorcycle show that is slated to take place towards the end of this year.

Ducati Multistrada V4 has been snapped testing and the latest set of images issued by Morebikes.co.uk gives a clear idea of what the upcoming ADV will be like. The upcoming Ducati Multistrada V4 can be seen wrapped in camouflage and hence, the exact visual details are not visible entirely. The test mule has been spotted somewhere in Europe. Take a look at the pictures and you will notice without any mistake that the test mule is that of a Multistrada. However, there are a few changes that make you believe that this one is a V4. In terms of visuals, the new Ducati Multistrada V4 can be seen with a new all-LED headlamp set up and the front fairing has also been revised. Moreover, the rear view mirrors also look new.

Take a deeper look and you will also notice the radar units placed between the two headlamps and these are a part of the company’s radar-assisted Advanced Rider Assistance System (ARAS). As the name suggests, these units will monitor the distance with other vehicles and will give the rider a warning when a vehicle comes too closer to the bike. Apart from these changes, the upcoming Ducati Multistrada V4 will also get a new subframe along with a double-sided swingarm.

You can see that the subframe is trellis type and is painted in red. Coming to the engine, this is the same motor that powers the Ducati Panigale V4 and the streetfighter V4. However, don’t expect the power figures to be as much astonishing as the engine might be detuned to order to suit the characteristics of an adventure tourer. The upcoming Ducati Multistrada V4 is expected to make global debut at the coming EICMA 2020 motorcycle show that is slated to take place towards the end of this year.

Royal Enfield J1D (new motorcycle codename) launch by 2020 April-end

Besides the J1D, Royal Enfield is actively working on the next-gen ‘350’ models Royal Enfield plans to launch an all-new motorcycle by the end of this April. Codenamed J1D, minimal details of the product are known so far. The news comes at the same time when the Chennai-based motorcycle manufacturer is actively testing its next-gen ‘350’ range. Prototypes of the 2020 Royal Enfield ‘350’ models have been spotted on public roads on multiple occasions. In fact, the company is also introducing the Royal Enfield Meteor — the virtual successor to the Thunderbird 350. The Meteor is codenamed J1C0 internally.

Over the months, Royal Enfield has filed trademark applications for the names: Hunter, Sherpa, Flying Flea and Roaster. It is not rare for OEMs to trademark product names way ahead of its actual development and for the same reason, one can expect the upcoming Royal Enfield J1D to sport one of them.

Rumours suggest that the J1D would be a lighter and accessible product. Earlier this year, we had shared a few images of a prototype couple that had similar attributes. Furthermore, Royal Enfield had also shared its plans to develop a new range of lightweight motorcycles targeted for young buyers and women riders. Still, that product bears the codename, J1C. Hence, nobody really knows what the J1D would be in its final production format.

Meanwhile, Royal Enfield is busy updating its current-gen ‘350’ range to BS6 emission specifications. The company initially planned to launch the next-gen models as its first BS6-compliant products but time proved that they were far from being market-ready. In the latest development, prices of the Royal Enfield Bullet 350 BS6 were revealed.

The engine specifications of the BS6-compliant ‘350’ models have not been shared officially and we expect it to be slightly lesser than their BS4 counterparts. The BS6 models sport an FI system while the BS4 models came with a carburettor, with which the 346cc air-cooled single-cylinder UCE (Unit Construction Engine) power plant made 19.1bhp and 28Nm of torque. The gearbox is a 5-speed unit.

The much-awaited next-generation Royal Enfield ‘350’ models would be a much better package thanks to its OHC (Over Head Cam) engine architecture. The current Royal Enfield UCE models (including the discontinued ‘500’) employ an archaic platform and are technically some of the weakest of their kind in the entire Indian motorcycle scenario. Hardcore Royal Enfield enthusiasts would not agree with this. Yet, we are equally interested to see what the next-gen ‘350’ line-up offers.

Facing financial crunch, UK based Norton Motorcycle goes into administration; India roll out hit

Norton had set up an equally owned joint venture with Pune-based Kinetic Motoroyale in 2017 to start making mid-size motorcycles for India and Southeast Asian Markets by 2018. The project got delayed due to financial crunch at the UK-based entity.

UK-based premium bike maker Norton Motorcycle’s India roll out may be hit, as the company has gone into administration after failing to pay outstanding dues to the UK authorities.

According to a news report, the company is struggling to pay a tax bill and faces a winding-up order under the UK’s insolvency law.

Norton had set up an equally owned joint venture with Pune-based Kinetic Motoroyale in 2017 to start making mid-size motorcycles for India and Southeast Asian Markets by 2018. The project got delayed due to financial crunch at the UK-based entity.

When contacted, Kinetic Motoroyale managing director Ajinkya Firodia told ET that Norton was looking to raise funds. Firodia said he would be travelling shortly to the UK to understand the situation better and seek clarity.

“Norton Motoroyale (the joint venture) is a separate company and continues to exist and hold its rights in its territories of India and Asean countries. After our visit, we shall understand the extent of impact, if any. The India-side development of all parts is nearly complete for the 650 Atlas. For some parts developed in the UK or Europe for Norton, I shall seek clarity from the administrator,” Firodia added.

When queried if the 650cc bike would get further delayed, he said it was “difficult to predict” now.

Kinetic Motoroyale had set up a 30,000-unit capacity plant in Ahmednagar in Maharashtra. A range of Norton bikes were expected to be made at this plant for Indian and Southeast Asian markets.

According to media reports, Norton, which was rescued by property developer Stuart Garner in 2008, said the company owed tax authorities 300,000 pounds and could be liquidated if it was not given more time to pay.

The report added that two of Garner’s other companies were also in administration.

Founded in Birmingham, Norton began making motorbikes in 1902 and soon became associated with races such as the Isle of Man TT.

Models like the Dominator and the Commando are well renowned and some of the bikes have even been featured in films including the Bond movies. The Norton Interpol was used by the UK Police in the 1980s for patrolling.

Kawasaki ZX25R rev sound video – All the way to 17k RPM

The upcoming Kawasaki ZX-25R hit all headlines in the motorcycle world about two months back, after its official introduction at the Tokyo Motor Show 2019.

With aesthetics resembling its bigger siblings such as the ZX-6R and ZX-10R, the ZX-25R is quite the package for a 250cc motorcycle. The 25R is powered by a 249cc liquid-cooled DOHC ‘four-cylinder’ engine i.e. just over 60cc in each cylinder. The official output figures are not available at the moment, but rumours claim it peaks at almost 60bhp, at around 17,000rpm — yes, you’ve read that right!

Prices are not yet revealed for any region in the world and we see minimal chances of it hitting the Indian market. However, if it does happen to come to your local Kawasaki dealership, expect a price tag of at least Rs 5 lakh ex-showroom; making it more expensive than a Kawasaki Ninja 400 and every other ‘normal’ 250cc motorcycle on the market.

The screaming baby Kawasaki sports bike borrows a lot from its bigger siblings alongside a host of other sophisticated components. The list includes Kawasaki’s horizontal back-link rear suspension, quick shifter, traction control, Showa SFF-BP (Separate Function Fork – Big Piston), dedicated power modes, and a lot more.

This is an odd and interesting combination of facts and figures, but nothing new in the motorcycle world. There have been multiple 250cc i4 models over the years and especially towards the end of the twentieth century, such as the Yamaha FZR250, Honda CBR250RR, Suzuki GSX-R250 and of course, the Kawasaki ZXR250.

These motorcycles may not be as fast as a conventional middle-weight or any other sensible alternative of its time. However, the customer focus is/was different for these low-capacity multi-cylinder motorcycles. They are meant for those who like to ride on the absolute limit — peaking over 15,000rpm in every straight and putting the time’s V10 Formula 1 cars in close proximity in the acoustic department.

As mentioned before, these kind of motorcycles were not particularly fast and government regulations often cut their peak output to around 45bhp, which is available only towards the top of the tacho. For the same reason, they were very subtle in their behaviour at lower revs and could feel like just any other 250cc single (except for the sound).

The interval of the peak output is quite short in some of these motorcycles and riders have to be very precise at their shifts to keep the pull strong, just to harness 45 horses in the straight line. However, as a wise petrolhead once said, “a slower machine (relatively) can always be pushed to the limit, but a faster machine will mostly remain underutilised”.

 

Honda Benly e electric scooter to go on sale in Japan from April 2020

Honda has announced that its electric scooter Benly e will go on sale from April 2020. The e-scooter will first go on sale in Japan, then in other global markets, says the company in a release.

The scooter will be priced between 7.37 lakh yen and 7.48 lakh yen.

Honda aims to sell around 200 units of the scooter per year in the Japanese market.

The electric scooter targets corporate customers, mainly logistics providers.

The scooter will be available in four different variants. It will be powered by dual electric batteries that can be detached easily and easily swappable as well.

As the two-wheeler manufacturer claims, this electric scooter can be used for last-mile pick-up and delivery services.

Triumph Tiger 900 makes global debut

The new Triumph Tiger 900 is set to be introduced in place of the Tiger 800 with lighter weight, slimmer stance and more powerful engine.

Triumph Motorcycles has revealed the new Tiger 900. It is essentially a replacement to the Tiger 800, which will come in with an updated chassis, suspension, new design and engine which is now Euro 5 compliant.

The Tiger 800 in India has appealed to the adventure biking fraternity in the country. It is among the best ADV bikes in the segment. And with this Tiger 900, Triumph aims to set the bar even higher, given the fact that it also comes in with a more powerful engine.

Set for launch in India sometime later next year, the Triumph Tiger 900 gets a redesigned frame with a bolt-on sub frame, new aluminum swingarm, new LED head lamps, DRLs and a TFT screen. It also receives longer travel suspension from Showa and is expected to be lighter than the Tiger 800.

Tiger 900 is narrower with a tighter fuel tank making it easier for rider to grip the motorcycle. It also receives an updated front fender, windscreen and sump guard which is made of plastic as compared to the aluminum finish seen on the current generation model. Triumph Motorcycles has also replaced the XR and XC variants of the Tiger 800 with GT and Rally models on the Tiger 900.

Engine specifications on the Triumph Tiger 900 includes a new 888cc, inline, 3 cylinder engine which will comply to Euro 5 and BS6 emission standards. It could make the same 94 hp power and 64 lb/ft (86 Nm) of torque.

It will receive cornering ABS and a total of 6 rider models of Rain, Road, Sport, Off-Road, Rider and Off-Road Pro. Triumph Shift Assist and My Triumph connectivity will be offered as standard on the Pro variants.

Suspension and braking on the GT variant will be achieved via Marzocchi suspension units with 180mm front and 170mm rear adjustable monoshock. The Pro trim gets monoshock with electronically adjustable with 9 levels of damping and 4 prefix preload settings. Both bikes sit on 19/17” alloy wheels fitted with Metzeler Tourance Next tyres. Braking is via Stylema calipers.

The new Tiger will be positioned below the Tiger 1200, which is currently on sale in India at Rs 17 lakh and will be priced accordingly so as to allow for equitable competition with the likes of the BMW F 850 GS, new-gen Honda Africa Twin and the Ducati Multistrada 950.

The Husqvarna Norden 901 Adventure Bike Is Heading To Production

After Husqvarna unveiled the Norden 901 concept at EICMA in November 2019, we were pretty very vocal about how much we hoped the model wouldn’t stay a concept for too long. You guys were really excited about it when it was unveiled, it made our top 10 of the coolest bikes showed at EICMA, and it even found a spot in director Jason’s top 5 bikes he’s most excited to see in 2020. Now, we learn that Husqvarna is moving ahead and will make the model a reality.

In a press release published on Monday, Husqvarna confirmed that the Norden 901 will become a full-time member of its lineup. This will become the brand’s first adventure motorcycle—a welcome addition if you ask me. The brand’s main focus was motocross and dirtbikes for a long time. It only very recently made the jump to street bikes with the introduction of the Vitpilen and Svartpilen 401 in 2018, then the 701 in 2019. The Norden 901 will strengthen the manufacturer’s presence in the road bike segment and will become the biggest engine currently offered in the Swedish lineup.

The Norden will run on an 890cc parallel-twin engine, use WP suspension components, and run on 21 and 17-inch wheels. That’s pretty much all the numbers we get for now. We don’t even get a release date. The company promises a lightweight adventure bike—”class-leading lightness”—that will also be comfortable and versatile. Nothing we haven’t heard before. If the 701 twins are any indication, the Norden 901 has the potential to also be a lot of fun.

“Breaking cover for the first time during the International Motorcycle show in Italy, the NORDEN 901 received high levels of interest from the hundreds of thousands of attending motorcycle fans as well as the motorcycle media,” Husqvarna commented in the press release.
