Fact or Fiction – Helmet Use

Invariably, these stories paint motorcycle rider deaths as a product of irresponsible riders who live in states that have some level of helmet choice. Frequently they report statistics that prove their narrative but fail to paint a full and complete picture. The lens with which these stories are reported often takes the naïve view that crashes can be made “safer” if only bikers somehow followed government helmet mandates. The only true solution to motorcycle safety and reducing fatalities are proactive measures, which prevent a collision from occurring at all, rather than reactive steps that may or may not offer some level of injury mitigation only after a crash has already taken place. Rider education, which prepares motorcyclists to interact with other roadway users by learning and practicing the skills necessary for hazard avoidance and developing a strategy to deal with real world traffic, is the primary component of a comprehensive motorcycle safety plan. Additionally, educating all motor vehicle operators to be alert and free of impairment as they share the road with others is critical in deterring crashes caused by inattention. When coming across these stories keep in mind some facts that are omitted from their reports. Fact: Over the last decade motorcycle related deaths have varied between years but for the most part remain flat. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) data from 2019 shows 5,014 deaths, a decrease from the 2008 5,307 deaths NTSHA recorded. Local legal expert Bryan Waldman breaks down the differences in this Legal Edge report. First, motorcyclists must have the correct kind of insurance. Then, they need a motorcycle endorsement on their driver’s license. Michigan does not require all motorcyclists to wear a helmet, but you first must reach a few milestones. Everyone on a motorcycle under 21 must wear a helmet, regardless of their experience on a bike. They must also have had a motorcycle endorsement for at least two years and/or pass a safety test. You must also have extra insurance coverage to cover medical bills. In Michigan, motorcycles are not considered motor vehicles, meaning insurance works a little differently. Motorcyclists don’t need to purchase any fault insurance. As long as a motor vehicle is involved, a motorcyclist is entitled to benefits. For example, if a motorcyclist spins out and crashes on some gravel by themselves, no fault benefits will activate. However, if they are involved in a near-miss with a car, the benefits do activate.

Harley-Davidson Pan America Apparel Coming From Europe

And we’re not talking from the sales perspective only, but from the partner companies’ point of view as well. Harley pulled the wraps off Pan America at the beginning of the week and announced it would be supporting the upcoming launch with a long list of home-brewed parts and accessories. It also secured the involvement of foreign companies, who were quick to jump on this new and shiny two-wheeled train. European apparel specialist REV’IT is one of them, and it will be making gear for Pan America riders, ranging from jackets and pants all the way to gloves and helmets. For all intents and purposes, they complement the other side of the coin, covered by Harley itself with the launch of luggage sets and accessories. “REV’IT! shares Harley-Davidson’s values in creating protective motorcycle gear that delivers functionality with refined style. Successful adventure touring gear delivers on providing protection, mobility, visibility, four-season versatility and storage, and this new gear was designed based on extensive REV’IT rider feedback and experience,” the company said in a statement. The REV’IT offer comprises two types of jackets and pants and two types of helmets. There are also boots and gloves on the table from the European supplier. Sadly, you will find no reference on pricing yet, as this piece of information was not released. The Harley-Davidson Pan America comes in two variants, 1250 and 1250 Special, both powered by the same 1,250cc engine from the Revolution Max family. The engine is rated at a maximum output of 150 hp, and that’s pretty good for motorcycles that tip the scales at 534 lbs (242 kg) and 559 lbs (254 kg), respectively.

‘It’s about freedom’: Local lawmaker trying again on motorcycle helmet law repeal

Eric Burlison, R-Battlefield, almost had it last year. After pitching the idea as a win for individual freedom, he got it attached to a larger transportation bill that passed both houses. But Gov. Mike Parson couldn’t stomach another part of the bill and vetoed it. This year, Burlison thinks he’s got a decent shot to pass the idea as its own bill. Parson, a Republican, supported similar stand-alone bills as a legislator, so Burlison’s main focus is on getting it through the legislature again. “We’ll see how much time (Senate leaders) give it on the floor,” he said Friday, “but over time, we’ve made so many compromises on this, so I hope people will take that into consideration.” Those compromises, Burlison said, include a requirement for those going without helmets to have qualifying health insurance. The exemption from the state’s helmet rule would also only apply to riders ages 18 and up. Those provisions will likely never be enough for opposing lawmakers who say the plan will lead to more deadly accidents. They have a point. National Highway Transportation Safety Agency research indicates helmets saved more than 1,800 lives in 2016, and that if all motorcyclists would have worn helmets that year, 802 more people could have been saved. On its website, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention make its position clear: “The single most effective way for states to save lives and save money is a universal helmet law.” They also point out that riders wouldn’t have to prove insurance coverage unless they were pulled over by law enforcement and worry the cost of accidents will ultimately take a toll on Medicaid.
