Harley-Davidson has been about as relevant in the big bore adventure segment as a skateboard at the Dakar. Having loafed on the ADV genre for decades, The Motor Company is finally taking a swing at the segment with the 2021 Pan America, a purpose-built adventure bike to battle stalwarts like the BMW R 1250 GS/GS Adventure, KTM 1290 Super Adventure, and Triumph Tiger 1200. The Pan Am boasts familiar H-D visual elements wrapped around some impressively future-forward technology. This new tech is benchmarked against a field that’s seen numerous iterations and refinements over the years. First (and perhaps foremost) in this image-conscious category, the clean-sheet Pan America strikes a look that stands apart from its rugged competitors. Harley says its styling aligned with the brand’s design language. There’s also a prevailing visual sentiment that departs from the familiar with an unapologetically brutalist look: blocky shapes, menacing headlamps with a secondary strip of lean angle-sensitive adaptive drew headlamp inspo from the Fat Bob and fairing cues from Road Glide, keeping the bike’s LEDs positioned above, and an imposing chunkiness that disregards any attempt at being pretty. Of course, the highest-stake component isn’t its looks, but rather the all-new Revolution Max powerplant. The liquid-cooled, 1,252cc, 60-degree V-twin shares the same bore and stroke as the late, great V-Rod, but has next to nothing in common with any existing Harley engine apart from its dimensions. A Little Backstory & Our Dilemma My name is Avory, and I grew up in Michigan; my whole family still lives there. But for me, that cliché thing happened where “the mountains called,” and you know… Colorado got me. For my mom’s birthday this year, I wanted to share the beauty of Colorado’s canyon roads, rivers, and mountains with her. She’s been riding basically her whole life, but she hasn’t ridden outside of a few midwestern states. I figured the best way to do that was to throw motorcycle exploring into the mix. Then comes our dilemma: for the sake of time and convenience, I didn’t want to have my mom ride her baby, an Indian Chief Classic, all the way from Michigan to Colorado by herself. Honda Motorcycles Southern Africa announced that the newly-launched Africa Twin will be used at the 2020 Honda Quest True Adventure, an adventure challenge designed to give adventure riders a once-in-a-lifetime experience with the Winged H’s legendary adventure bike. 14 riders will get the opportunity to experience the essence of adventure riding atop the brand-new 2020 Africa Twin, and two lucky participants will get to keep the bike they competed with. Testing the skills Honda’s Riaan Fourie explains that the Honda Quest is not a race or a rally – it is an adventure expedition, designed to test human endurance and adaptability. “It will test your adventure motorcycle riding, mechanical skills, as well as endurance, courage, and resilience against the African terrain. If you long for the road less travelled with like-minded adventurers and you are resourceful, independent, yet mindful of your fellow man, then Honda Quest is for you,” says Fourie. “Honda Motorcycles Southern Africa have again partnered with Specialised Adventures, a company renowned for their execution of extreme events, to deliver a tough expedition experience where riders will be put to the test in challenging terrain.” To qualify for entry, interested riders must be residents of South Africa, Namibia, Botswana or Swaziland, and be in possession of a valid motorcycle license. Aurora’s self-driving system needed more motorcycle experience. So a biker club helped out

by Sasha Lekach from https://mashable.com The San Francisco chapter of the Iron Order Motorcycle Club doesn’t usually concern itself much with self-driving cars, but autonomous vehicle company Aurora recently spent the day driving around with the club’s bikers. Aurora, the company co-founded by former Tesla Autopilot head Sterling Anderson, is developing an autonomous driving system it calls Aurora Driver. That system, like all self-driving programs, needs practice on the road, whether that’s in autonomous mode logging real-world miles on public roads, in a computer simulation, or being manually driven. Its perception system is taking in everything around it: pedestrians, bicycles, other cars, trucks, delivery vans, e-scooters, errant shopping carts, construction crews, and, yes, motorcycles. That data is used to predict and react to future scenarios on the road. Motorcycle sightings aren’t rare, but to make sure the machines were more familiar and comfortable around this specific vehicle Aurora needed to devote a machine-learning day to this one vehicle type. So the perception team gathered a group of six motorcyclists to simply drive around the Aurora vehicles. (Aurora isn’t developing the actual cars, but the tech that will work in a car to make it drive autonomously). The cars were in manual mode for the motorcycle testing since it just needed to collect the data. The motorcycle cycle club brought some volunteers and even some Aurora employees and one employee’s dad came out to ride the motorcycles. Being a tech company, Motorcycle Learning Day (that’s what I’ve dubbed the special motorcycle event) wasn’t a free-for-all with revving and vrooming around.
