Vintage motorcycles ride in to Gastonia

Motorcycle enthusiasts gathered at Gaston Motorcycle Werks in Gastonia Saturday for Cyclemania – an annual show celebrating vintage bikes made across the globe.

Cyclemania made its Gastonia debut, as it’s been held in Charlotte since 2014. More than 50 European, Japanese and American bikes and their owners convened in the lot beside Gaston Motorcycle Werks.

Bikes were judged based on where they were made and if they were stock or modified. Modified bike owners showed off their creativity, while all-original owners boasted their detail-oriented restorations.

Bobbers, choppers, sport bikes, café racers, off-road bikes and even mopeds were entered in the show in hopes of their owners taking home a trophy for best in their class and best in show.

While technically a competition, show participants talked bikes, shared laughs and stories over coffee and beer without concern over how their bike was judged. It’s a great even to catch up with old friends, network and meet newcomers, said Blair Barwick.

“This is just for fun,” he said. “I like the process of building bikes.”

Barwick, a Canadian-born Fort Mill, South Carolina, resident, drives a 1975 Honda CB550F restored by Benjamin Segal and his team at Gaston Motorcycle Werks. He bought the tired bike three years ago in hopes Segal could turn the four-cylinder cycle into the quick-moving café racer of Barkwick’s dreams.

The café racer should keep certain lines within its shape. For instance, low handlebars, a single-rider seat and unique aesthetics are what make a café racer, Barwick said.

Barwick enjoys riding and looking back at his bike like the other bike owners at the show, but bringing a bike back to life makes Barwick look forward to building his next project and bringing it to Cyclemania.

“You have to like the journey. If you don’t like the journey, it’s an unpleasant process,” Barwick said.

5 Of The Most Exciting Motorcycles Unveiled At EICMA 2019

EICMA, the International Motorcycle Show in Milan is always one of the most hotly anticipated events on the two-wheeled calendar. The show lays claim to some of the biggest model reveals and news of the year and 2019 was no different. There was a strong presence of overlanding and adventure motorcycles this year as that segment continues to trend upwards, but that didn’t stop Honda from grabbing headlines with its all-new MotoGP-inspired sportbike. These are five of the most exciting motorcycles unveiled at EICMA this year.

Ducati Scrambler Desert X Concept

Inspired by classic rally bikes and the legendary Dakar-winning Ducati-powered Cagiva Elefant, the Scrambler Desert X is essentially a bigger, more hardcore version of the Desert Sled. The finer details are scant but not much seems to be keeping this highly-modified Scrambler from going into production. The Desert X uses the Scrambler 1100 as its base architecture, rides on 21-inch front and 18-inch rear Pirelli Scorpion tires and has no less than four fuel tanks for long-distance riding.

Harley-Davidson Pan America

Considering Harley-Davidson’s recent questionable marketing ploys, like randomly sponsoring the X-Games and headlining in a Katie Perry music video, you can tell the American motorcycle manufacturer is throwing a lot at the wall to see what sticks. That includes the all-new, first-ever Harley-Davidson adventure motorcycle. The Pan America made its official debut at EICMA this year and also came sporting H-D’s new liquid-cooled V-twin engine. With the way the adventure market is trending, H-D is pinning its hopes on the Pan America, but seeing as how it’s the brand’s first venture into the space, there’s no way to tell how competitive the bike will be, just yet.

Honda CBR1000RR R

EICMA 2019 was filled to the brim with long-travel suspension and dirt-hungry knobby tires, but some of the biggest news came from Honda, concerning the all-new CBR1000RR-R sportbike. Taking a healthy dose of inspiration from the race-winning, series-dominating Honda MotoGP bike, the new CBR is expected to raise the bar astronomically for Honda. The full-color TFT display and electronics package features electronically adjustable suspension and new readouts like lean-angle sensor. According to the Honda UK media site, the new engine is expected to develop around 214 horsepower.

KTM 390 Adventure

Typically, adventure motorcycles tend to be on the heavier side and the tall seat heights can be intimidating and off-putting for shorter riders. Now that there’s a noticeable uptick in interest in the adventure category, it’s good to see manufacturers catering to the larger population and building smaller, more approachable bikes. The KTM 390 is a smart move on the Austrian brand’s part. KTM is providing a gateway to adventure riding to younger and newer riders, and as those riders get older, gain more experience and look for an upgrade, it stands to reason they’ll stay brand loyal, especially since KTM already has off-road options in nearly every size category.

Husqvarna Norden 901

Over at KTM’s Swedish sibling’s stand, the Husqvarna Norden 901 broke cover and now claims the title as the brand’s first true all-out Adventure Touring motorcycle. Riding on 21-inch front and 18-inch rear wire-spoke wheels and sporting a two-piece TFT display, Husqvarna says the Norden 901 was built as a light explorer motorcycle. It’s based on the KTM 790 Adventure, so it’ll be interesting to see how different the riding experiences are to justify one over the other.

Honda unveils big bike line-up for 2020 at EICMA

Honda unveiled its motorcycle line-up for 2020 at the EICMA Motorcycle Show here on Tuesday. The launches span across all biking segments — commuter, roadster, adventure and racing.

The refreshed models showcased include SH125i and SH150i in the commuter segment; CMX500 Rebel and CBR1000R roadsters; the Africa Twin and the Africa Twin Adventure Sports in the adventure biking space and racing bikes — CBR1000RR-R Fireblade and Fireblade SP. Of these, the CB1000R, the Africa Twin Adventure Sports and the Fireblade racing bikes will be available in India, although the exact time of launch and the prices are yet to be revealed.

Powered by a lighter and more powerful 1100 cc parallel twin engine, both versions of the 2020 Africa Twin use a lighter, narrower frame, improving both agility and comfort. The all-new racing bikes — CBR1000RR-R Fireblade and Fireblade SP — come with a new frame and engine and draw strongly on Honda’s RC213V MotoGP technology. Both bikes will be available in two colour schemes: a Grand Prix Red and a Matte Pearl Black.

Make in India focus

These launches come at a time Honda Motorcycles and Scooters India is making big plans for its exclusive premium motorcycle business under the ‘Honda BigWing’ vertical. With new focus on ‘Make in India for the World’, Honda plans to foray into mass production of select big bikes from India, from the existing CKD/CBU operations. While the existing model of the Africa Twin is assembled in India, the CB1000R is being imported as a fully built unit. The modalities for these 2020 models are still being worked out and whether they will be manufactured, assembled or imported cannot be ascertained immediately, said Prabhu Nagaraj, Vice-President, Brand and Communications, Honda Motorcycles and Scooters India.

The company plans to nearly double its BigWing portfolio from the current seven to 13 models by next fiscal. Nagaraj hopes that the focus on ‘Make in India’ will improve the export potential for the company, especially after the implementation of BS-VI emission norms (Euro V equivalent) from April 1, 2020.

Honda’s R&D team from Rome has been quite active for the last five years, fielding interesting design concepts at every edition of EICMA. At this year’s edition, the Italian wing has come up with a snazzy Honda CB4X adventure tourer concept.

Honda describes the project as experimental machine which is developed under theme “fun seven days a week”. The motorcycle is claimed to be a crossover with healthy blend of Sport and Touring. The motorcycle was designed by Valerio Aiello and his young team of designers.

Without revealing much, Honda says that the concept is powered by an inline four cylinder engine that would offer more than adequate power for a long trip on the weekends and yet be flexible enough for everyday urban grind.

The company describes the unique fuel-tank silhoutte to be inspired by a cobra ready to attack its prey. Complementing the front heavy stance is the sharp semi-fairing with diamond shaped LED headlamp cluster.

The design concept features aluminium sub-frame, a steeply raked tailpiece a pointy tailight and a set of sport exhaust pipes. 17-inch alloy wheels, Brembo braking system, inverted telescopic front fork and rear monoshock round off the hardware configuration.

On board the new CBR1000RR-R Fireblade, the Japanese motorcycle maker’s popular liter-class four-cylinder powertrain develops a heady 212 hp. If at all the CB4X concept makes it to production, we expect this engine to be adoring its bay albeit in a much saner state of tune.

Honda has not discussed the possibility of a production model anytime soon but we hope to see a derivative achieve fruition. It is to be noted that the company showcased CB4 Interceptor concept a couple of years ago which is yet to see the light of day. That said, if the concept garners good positive response, Honda could explore the possibility of a commercial launch.

A production version of the Honda CB4X would competition with the likes of Yamaha Tracer 900, Kawasaki Versys 1000, Ducati Multistrada and so on. Honda has also unveiled the updated Rebel 500 and 300 cruisers at the ongoing motorcycle expo.

2019 Vegas BikeFest Rally Recap

Thousands of Bikers Cruise into Sin City for the 19th Annual Vegas BikeFest®, October 3-6, 2019

LAS VEGAS (November 4, 2019) – Thousands of riders and motorcycle enthusiasts from the United States and 17 countries around the world cruised into Las Vegas for the nineteenth annual Vegas BikeFest at the Downtown Las Vegas Events Center. The action packed, four-day rally delivered an abundance of activities and attractions.

“This year, through our partnership with John Oakes and Freeze Management, the rally was about bringing more experiences to our attendees and attracting new attendees. With the addition of the Hooligan Dirt Dash Flat Track Racing taking place at the Plaza Hotel and Casino’s Core Arena, the Bell Brawl at Red Rock Harley-Davidson, and the return of the Artistry In Iron custom bike show display, a new type of energy was felt throughout the entire rally”, states Mindi Cherry, Event Manager.

Vegas BikeFest 2019 offered attendees a variety of entertainment at the rally including Moonshine Bandits on Friday night and the always entertaining metal band Steel Panther on Saturday night. Carol Lyn’s Herstory of Rock kicked off the weekend on Thursday night. In addition to the concerts, attendees had the opportunity to explore over 100 vendor booths filled with motorcycles, parts, accessories, apparel and more.

Vegas BikeFest partnered with V-Twin Visionary and Russ Brown Motorcycle Attorneys to give away a custom Harley-Davidson Street Glide on Saturday night. Valerie W. from Fontana, CA, was the lucky recipient of the bike that included custom parts from Leading Edge, Saddlemen Seats, Bassani Xhaust, Klock Werks, and ThunderMax.

In addition to the motorcycle, Vegas BikeFest gave away over $100,000 in prizes and cash, including $5,000 in BikeFest Bucks Shopping Sprees that was spent with vendors at the rally. The always popular Miss Vegas BikeFest did not disappoint along with other crowd favorites Best Facial Hair Contest, Bikini Contest, Tattoo Contest and Biker Bingo. Poker Walks, Poker Run, and Lady Luck Fun Run were big hits and mulligan sales raised $2,500 to benefit the Nevada Childhood Cancer Foundation.

Vegas BikeFest featured four different bike shows kicking it off on Thursday with Full Throttle Magazine’s Ride-In Bike Show featuring over 10 different categories. Best in Show went to Anthony Robinson with his 1966 Triumph T-100. On Friday, V-Twin Visionary Performance Bike Show debuted with Best of Show going to Ramjet Racing with the completely custom ’03 Dyna. Saturday was the Vegas BikeFest Custom Bike Show sponsored by Russ Brown Motorcycle Attorneys; with over 15 categories. Brian Hendricks with his 2011 Harley-Davidson Road Glide won People’s Choice while Anthony Robinson’s 1966 Triumph T-100 took home Best in Show. On Sunday, the Sick Chicks, No Dipsticks (All Female Bike Show) debuted at the rally, adding to the festivities with a great showing of all female owned bikes.

Hooligan Dirt Dash brought two nights of flat track racing to Vegas BikeFest with Mikey Virus taking first place on both nights of racing.

Plans are already underway for the 2020 Las Vegas BikeFest in downtown Las Vegas, with dates set for October 1-4, 2020.

Harley Davidson bikers enjoy Jaber Causeway morning ride

KUWAIT: US Charge d’Affairs and Deputy Chief of Mission Larry L Memmott flagged off on Friday a Harley Davidson motorcycle ride on one of the longest bridges in the world – Sheikh Jaber Causeway. It was part of the activities of 11-day Discover America 2019 event being held in Kuwait.

“I am happy to be here to inaugurate this event. It’s a 10-day demonstration of our culture, tradition, musical, food, restaurants, business, cars, education and today, motorbikes,” said Memmott. “Harley Davidson is a proudly American brand; in fact, it’s very iconic. It’s part of our cultural heritage and we are very proud of their achievements. If we talk about Harley Davidson, it’s about tradition and history, because they are in existence for the last 116 years and counting and will be there perhaps forever,” he said.

Riders from various nationalities participated in the event, which started from the Harley Davidson showroom in the Free Trade Zone in Shuwaikh down to Subiya via Jaber Causeway and back. “We are happy to host this major as event part of Discover America. We have participants from all over Kuwait; they hail from various nationalities and backgrounds. I think we have more than 100 bikers. They are here to support us,” Memmott said.

Prior to the motorcycle ride, bikers gathered at the Harley Davidson showroom for breakfast and a briefing. Harley Davidson is also offering a 25 percent discount on all its merchandise displayed at the showroom. “Please visit and be there in the remaining days of event as we want to demonstrate mostly American brands; participating outlets normally give major discounts to everyone. Just like Sultan Center – they have more than 4,000 products on display and they are all from America. Most of the items will be offered at a discounted price. Also, we have seminars and business opportunities for everyone – we have movies and concerts too,” Memmott added.

Discover America is an annual event organized by the US Embassy in partnership with the American Business Council of Kuwait to promote US products and services. This year’s event is being sponsored by Ali Al-Mutawa Commercial Company, McDonalds, Cadillac by Alghanim, Del Monte, Francorp and IFA Travel and Tourism.

Build your own experience at the UK’s biggest bike show

BRITAIN’S biggest motorbike show returns to the NEC, in Birmingham, next month.

Promotion for this year’s Motorcycle Live features a design based on the plastic model kits of aircraft and bikes we used to build when we were kids.

The idea is that the show provides visitors with everything they need to build their own “perfect day out”.

Show MD Finlay McAllan told Mirror Motorcycling: “We pride ourselves on being a show that offers everything under one roof and we place a lot of importance on making sure there is something for everyone.

The MCIA Try Ride offers visitors the chance to take a first step on two wheels, with a 20-minute taster session on a 125cc scooter or motorcycle.

For those who want to experience the feel of riding and try out the controls, but don’t want to go the whole hog, both the BMW Rolling Road and the Harley-Davidson Jumpstart offer the chance to get behind the bars of a motorcycle on a rolling road.

Try out some of the latest bikes in the Test Ride Zone, or have at go at off-road riding in the Adventure Zone or the Try Trials zone.

There are even three different riding experiences for children aged from two upwards.

As always, the show also offers the opportunity to meet and be entertained by some of the biggest names in motorcycle sport.

These include recently crowned British Superbike Champion, Scott Redding and five-time World Superbike Champion Jonathan Rea, four-time World Superbike Champion Carl Fogarty and three-time BSB Champ John Reynolds.

The 2nd weekend of the Rio Grande Arts Festival in Albuquerque, New Mexico will be tomorrow through Sunday. Next week, we’ll head to Las Vegas to prepare for the aviation show which starts on October 22….more on that one later.

As you may know, we send out emails from time to time trying to help find new homes for sold out and rare pieces owned by clients. These do not belong to the studio and are for sale by private collectors. Please view the listings below and let me know if any are of interest. Hundreds of drunk scooter riders lost their licenses at Germany’s Oktoberfest this year

Drinking and riding carries the same penalty as drunk driving

Oktoberfest just wrapped up in Munich, and surprisingly, there’s some pretty alarming transportation-related news coming from it. Ride-sharing scooters and drunk party-goers don’t make for a good combination, but that’s exactly what German police had to fend with throughout the 16-day-long event.

According to German news outlet Deutsche Welle, and picked up by The Drive, local police say they caught 414 people riding scooters while under the influence. Of those, 254 riders had their driver’s licenses revoked on the spot. Germany treats scooters the same as cars, so there are serious consequences for not following the rules of the road — similar to America, there are repercussions for drunk driving. What remains unreported is how many accidents or injuries occurred as a result of all the drunk scootering.

German police were on high alert when it came to the scooters, as they were just unleashed on the public in June this year. The numbers are slightly better for folks who were driving an actual car in the city of Munich during the festival. Police found 315 drunk drivers and forced 215 of those to give up their licenses immediately.

Millions from all over the globe attend Oktoberfest every year. Beer is consumed in copious amounts in massive beer glasses known as steins — the only size of beer served in the beer tents amounts to 33.8 ounces. Drinking tasty German beer and singing all day may have given some folks a little too much confidence to pilot an E-scooter home rather than walking like the rest of the crowd. Police did a great job of keeping the scooters from entering onto the Oktoberfest grounds, banning their use during the festival itself.

We’ll leave you with a few fairly obvious words of advice: Don’t drink and scoot at the same time. Traveling at the pace of a brisk jog is not worth losing your driver’s license.
