LA County Sheriff Motorcycles Get Laptops

Raytheon is installing laptops on motorcycles used by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department with a goal of having 100 motorcycles equipped with the computers by this fall. The company said motorcycle deputies will use the computers to access data, as well as to conduct license plate checks and wanted persons inquiries. These computers are similar to those  the company is installing in other LASD vehicles, said T.J. Kennedy, director of public safety and security for Raytheon’s network centric systems business. LASD Capt. Scott Edson said the department will reduce voice radio traffic and use the computers to issue electronic citations. Raytheon is also contracted to provide new dispatch consoles to LA County’s sheriff and fire departments.

Krawiec Beats Hines In An All-Harley NHRA Final At St. Louis

Harley-Davidson® Screamin’ Eagle®/Vance & Hines rider Ed Krawiec widened his Pro Stock Motorcycle points lead with his seventh win of the season, defeating his teammate Andrew Hines in the final round of the AAA Insurance NHRA Midwest Nationals at Gateway Motorsports Park. It was the fifth all-Harley final of the season, and Krawiec won for the fourth time when Hines left the starting line early. The result puts the Harley-Davidson team back on track after its 13-racing winning streak was snapped last weekend in Charlotte, where both Hines and Krawiec lost in the semi-final round. “Our team focus is back on winning races, rather than on the winning streak,” said Krawiec, the defending NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle champion, who debuted a Hard Candy Pink Flake paint scheme and leathers at Gateway that he will run during the next two races in October in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. “The Screamin’ Eagle team really had to work hard with my Harley-Davidson® V-Rod®  all weekend after we had transmission trouble in the fourth round of qualifying. The transmission skipped a gear again in the first round today and we would have lost if my opponent had not fouled. The third engine of the weekend got me to the finals.” Krawiec now holds a 33-point lead over Hines after three of six races in the Full Throttle Countdown to the Championship playoffs. Krawiec qualified third for the event with an Elapsed Time of 6.839 seconds. Hines qualified fourth at 6.862. Lucas Oil Buell rider Hector Arana Jr. set a new track record of 6.809 seconds to lead all qualifiers. On a day when red-light fouls for leaving the starting line early would decide eight of 15 races, Krawiec opened Sunday eliminations with red-light wins over the Steve Johnson Racing Suzuki and Kuryakyn Buell rider Chip Ellis. Hines defeated Suzuki Extended

Team J-Witz Bumps Their Own Record At Bub/Bonneville Speed Trials

Mother Nature really threw racers and spectators a curve at the Bub Motorcycle Speed Trials this year with a massive rain storm that cancelled many passes on Sunday and closed the track on Monday. Once the rains cleared and racing appeared to get back on track, huge cross winds plagued the streamline classes who make it a point not to run with winds of 14 mph or higher. But, Jody Perewitz and Team J-WITZ came to race and with winds bordering on unacceptable the beautiful J-WITZ machine rolled to the start line. Making constant body adjustments to counter wind pressure from the side, Jody made several flawless passes, one at a blistering 196.9 mph while bumping her previous FIM World Record to 189 mph. So once again this frantic beauty has laid down the gauntlet and made it perfectly clear that she is and will be a major contender for years to come. If you’d like to follow the adventures and race schedule for Jody and Team J’WITZ visit www.facebook.com/teamjwitz or www.facebook.com/perewitz. Coolbeth Is Eighth On Factory Harley At Santa Rosa Mile

Harley-Davidson® Screamin’ Eagle® Factory Team rider Kenny Coolbeth placed eighth in the AMA Pro Harley-Davidson Insurance Grand National Championship race on the Santa Rosa Mile at the Sonoma County Fairgrounds. The race was won by South East Harley-Davidson rider Sammy Halbert on a Harley-Davidson®  XR750 motorcycle. Halbert was the fastest qualifier for the 25-lap main, but it was Crosley Radio Kawasaki rider Bryan Smith who took the lead on the opening lap and appeared headed for a run-away victory after stretching his advantage to 4.9-seconds over Halbert on lap 14. But a few laps later, Smith began to falter as track conditions changed, and Halbert and Rogers Racing/Blue Springs Harley-Davidson rider Jared Mees reeled him in. Halbert passed for the lead on lap 20, and Mees got by Smith on lap 21. Mees and Halbert battled in the closing laps, with Halbert finally winning by 0.874 seconds. Smith held off Zanotti Racing/Schaeffer`s Harley-Davison rider Jake Johnson to salvage a third-place spot on the podium, 3.726 seconds behind Halbert. Eaken Racing rider Robert Pearson was fifth on a Harley-Davidson. Coolbeth opened the race in 12th place, and moved up to eighth on lap 16. “I spun out on the start and ended up way back on the first lap,” said Coolbeth. “The track was a little rough and very dusty, so we could hardly see on the straights, and it was really tough to pass. This was not a typical mile track.” Halbert also won the four-lap Dash for Cash sprint bonus race. After 14 of 16 AMA Grand National events, Mees leads the series with 262 points. Halbert moves past Johnson into second place with 248 points. Johnson is third with 246 points, followed by Smith with 193 points. Coolbeth is in eighth place with 124 points. Riders Beware: Today, Pasadena Police Plans "Motorcycle Safety Enforcement Campaign"

You know what this means if you're planning to ride in Southern California today…   Police are planning a motorcycle safety enforcement campaign Sunday, officials said. Extra officers will be on patrol in areas frequented by motorcyclists, and where motorcycles crashes are known to occur, Pasadena police said in a written statement (this probably means in and around Angeles Crest Highway). In addition to impaired drivers or those riding carelessly, officers will also seek out other motorists that commit traffic violations that could lead to motorcycle crashes. The City of Pasadena has experienced one motorcycle fatality this year. Funding for Sunday's campaign is being provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
