Hines And Harley V-Rod Smash NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle ET Record At Reading

Harley-Davidson® Screamin’ Eagle®/Vance & Hines riderAndrew Hines set a new national Pro Stock Motorcycle Elapsed Time record of 6.728 seconds at the rain-delayed Auto-Plus NHRA Nationals at Maple Grove Raceway Monday. Hines and his teammate, Ed Krawiec, advanced to the final round of eliminations, but that race was postponed due to more rain, and will be run during the Big O Tires NHRA Nationals in Las Vegas, Oct. 25-28. Hines broke the class ET record twice on Monday, first with a 6.742-second blast in the opening round of eliminations that bettered the mark of 6.750 set by Krawiec in March at Gainesville, Fla. Hines backed that pass up with a 6.783 ET in round two, but then lowered the record further with a 6.728-second run in the semi-finals. “We had just about ideal conditions here today,” said Hines, noting that other NHRA class records also fell on Monday. “It was cool and the pressure was down. I’m glad to get the record because this is probably the last chance we’ll have at it this season. It’s not going to happen in Las Vegas and it would take some extraordinary conditions for it to happen in Pomona.” Setting the record also earned Hines 20 bonus points towards the national championship, and he’s now just 17 points behind class leader Krawiec with two races left on the schedule. “The Countdown playoff is coming down to a battle between Ed and me,” said Hines. “That’s what we wanted, and those 20 points could come in handy for me at the last two races.” It was Krawiec, the defending Pro Stock Motorcycle champion, who set the pace in qualifying. Riding a Harley-Davidson® V-Rod®  in metal flake Hard Candy Pink paint as part of the effort to raise breast cancer awareness, Krawiec used a 6.799-second ET in the last round on

Motorcycle thefts decline 6 percent in 2011

A total of 46,667 motorcycles were reported stolen in 2011, and 17,199 of them were recovered, according to a report released today by the National Insurance Crime Bureau. That compares to 49,791 stolen bikes in 2010, a decrease of 6 percent. Whereas the number of thefts increases dramatically in the warmer months, the day of the week seems to be of no significance. On Mondays, the day of the largest number, there were 6,962 bikes stolen. The number on Sundays, the day of the lowest number, there were 6,422. California ranks first as the state with the most thefts, with 5,927, followed by Texas, Florida, North Carolina, and Indiana. The state reporting the lowest number of thefts was North Dakota (21) followed by Wyoming, South Dakota, Vermont, Alaska, and Montana. Of course, those five states all have low population numbers so it is no surprise they should have lower numbers of motorcycles–or anything–stolen. Continue Reading

Not A Good Time To Be A Biker In Gaza City

Lawmakers in Gaza have continued their draconian campaign against motorcycle usage, taking the bold step of banning the import of spare parts for motorcycles into the ancient Palestinian city. Interior Ministry official Hassan Akashed has admitted that the move aims to directly reduce the number of motorcycles, which he claims are a main cause of car accidents. Motorcyclists in the city have been subject to an ongoing crack down, banning them from riding after midnight, and restricting women from riding. The Interior Ministry recently announced that it was banning women from riding bikes or being pillion passengers, to limit accidents and 'protect community values.' Click here to read more.

Barnes Wins AMA Pro Vance & Hines XR1200 Race at NOLA

KLR Group/Spyke’s Harley-Davidson rider Michael Barnes won his third AMA Pro Vance & Hines XR1200 series race of the season and earned the first AMA Pro Racing class championship of his 25-year professional racing career Sunday at NOLA Motorsport Park in New Orleans, La., in a race that began with an atmosphere of highly charged anticipation and ended in controversy as the 2012 AMA Pro Road Racing season drew to a close. Barnes and fellow championship contender Tyler O’Hara (Bartels’ Harley-Davidson/Scrubblade) jumped into the lead at the start of the nine-lap contest after polesitter Jake Holden (MOB Racing) cras hed on the opening lap.  Following another crash on lap four by Ray Delaney that caused a red flag stoppage, the  pair picked up where they left off on the subsequent restart, setting up a five-lap sprint for the XR Showdown crown and its $25,000 first place bonus. O’Hara shadowed Barnes until the penultimate lap, when he made a move to the front early in the lap, only to give the position back on the white flag lap in Turn 1. O’Hara attempted to regain the lead again several corners later but  went wide under braking, allowing Barnes to stay in front. Then as the pair exited the final corner onto the start/finish straight side by side, O’Hara reached over and appeared to grab Barnes’ right arm, pulling it off the throttle and causing his motorcycle to lose momentum as O’Hara drew past him and crossed the finish line in the lead. However, AMA Pro Racing officials subsequently ruled the incident as avoidable contact between riders and issued a penalty that repositioned O’Hara to last place in the finishing order, settling the championship in Barnes’ favor.  “Tyler came up on the inside of me, but I had the outside line and I
