Harley-Davidson is presenting sponsor of AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame Legends recognition for Mert Lawwill

Harley-Davidson, whose motorcycles helped write the history of American dirt-track racing, will be the presenting sponsor of the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame's Legends recognition for Mert Lawwill. Lawwill, a 1998 inductee, will be honored at the annual Hall of Fame induction ceremony on Friday, Nov. 16, at the Red Rock Casino, Resort & Spa in Las Vegas, Nev.  Each year during the induction ceremony for the new class of the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame, existing members of the Hall of Fame are recognized as Legends. The 2012 AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame Legends are Lawwill, the 1969 AMA Grand National Champion, and 1998 inductee Malcolm Smith, a pioneer in off-road motorcycling. Both Lawwill and Smith starred in the timeless motorcycling documentary "On Any Sunday." The pair will be introduced on stage by the director of that movie — and a Hall of Famer himself — Bruce Brown.  "The iconic images of motorcycling seen in 'On Any Sunday' were instrumental in bringing generations of new riders into the sport and continue to resonate with riders today," said Scott Miller, Harley-Davidson Vice-President of Parts, Accessories and Customization and an AMA board member. "Mert Lawwill is truly one of the great legends of Harley-Davidson and AMA racing, and we could not be more proud to support this event that recognizes the immense impact that he and Malcolm Smith have had on the history of motorcycle racing through their achievements on and off the track."   In addition, the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony, presented by KTM, will officially welcome the class of 2012: the late Rod Bush, KTM North America president and industry visionary; world championship roadracing tuner Nobby Clark; off-road racing champion Ty Davis; 1975 AMA Supercross Champion Jimmy Ellis; pioneering female motocrosser Sue Fish; world-class bike restorer

Honda Wants car-to-car Networks To Include Motorcycles Too

We’ve been hearing a lot about car-to-car communication, both here in the U.S. and in Europe, that would allow vehicles to “talk” to each other to avoid crashes. Anyone who has ever ridden a motorcycle in traffic knows that one of the biggest hazards is car and truck drivers not seeing bikes. So Honda wants include motorcycles in the car-to-car conversation. At the 19th ITS World Congress in Vienna last week, Honda demonstrated connectivity for motorcycles that could allow bikes to communicate with cars and new active safety technology to make riding safer. Honda has been a member of Europe’s Car2Car Communication Consortium since 2006 and for years has worked on integrating motorcycles into the mix of connected vehicles. Continue reading

The American Motorcyclist Association Urges Riders to 'Vote Like a Motorcyclist'

With the Nov. 6 General Election just around the corner, the American Motorcyclist Association is reminding motorcyclists to research where candidates stand on motorcycle-related issues and "Vote Like a Motorcyclist."  The AMA is a non-partisan organization and doesn't make political endorsements. But the national association encourages riders to cast their ballots based on candidates' positions on motorcycling-related issues as well as other issues of importance to them.  The AMA provides tools to help its members make informed choices on Election Day and offers tips for getting involved in campaigns.  AMA members can easily find out where candidates stand on motorcycling-related issues by reading the 2012 AMA Voter Guide. The online tool is an exclusive benefit of AMA membership and is available at http://americanmotorcyclist.com/votelikeamotorcyclist.  Motorcycle-only checkpoints, restricted recreational access to public land and health insurance discrimination against motorcyclists are just some of the issues used to rate federal congressional and state gubernatorial candidates in the 2012 AMA Voter Guide.  "The 2012 AMA Voter Guide gives AMA members important information about political candidates," said Wayne Allard, a former U.S. representative and U.S. senator from Colorado who now serves as the AMA vice president for government relations. "The guide includes a rating for every federal and gubernatorial candidate of the major political parties who returned an AMA questionnaire. "The rating shows how closely the candidates' answers align with AMA positions," Allard said. "The 2012 AMA Voter Guide also features scorecards for federal incumbents seeking re-election that shows how closely their voting records and other actions match the positions held by the AMA."  Voting and getting involved politically are important because the results of Election Day lay the foundation for legislation and laws, Allard added. If anti-motorcycling candidates earn elected office, then they could legislate away opportunities to ride, cut back or eliminate funding

The award-winning rock band CTS (Consider The Source) has joined forces with CD Baby, the world’s largest digital distributor of independent music, to benefit the non-profit 501 (c) organization B.R.A.K.E.S. (Be Responsible, Keep Everyone Safe) Their goal is to generate additional funding to take the B.R.A.K.E.S. life-saving student driving education programs nationwide. CTS recently issued a new single recording of their popular drag racing song, “Quarter Mile,” on CD Baby and other music download services, with proceeds dedicated to the B.R.A.K.E.S. Safe Driving Programs for teenage drivers. As part of this fundraising effort, the NHRA (National Hot Rod Association) will lend promotional support through its numerous marketing platforms, including social media and NHRA.com, to promote the song’s availability. The organization’s goal is to increase funding to introduce the B.R.A.K.E.S. program to public & private schools throughout North America with the goal of reducing teen driving accidents. “The song ‘Quarter Mile,’ was inspired by a drag racing friend of mine who said she lived her life a quarter mile at a time. I was so impressed by all the obstacles she’d overcome to pursue her racing passion, I had to write a song comparing her life’s journey to achieving any dream we have,” stated Jeff Senour, founder of CTS. “We are excited about this unique fundraising effort with CD Baby to benefit B.R.A.K.E.S., our goal is to generate additional funding so the program can be offered nationwide,” said Senour.
