Editor’s Note:What appears below is a guest blog post from veteran biker Jeff Maddox, who regularly holds court over at the JMAdog blog. Where did the summer go? As we get just that much closer to November and December I realize that most folks are putting their bikes up for the season. I’m not sure if I could take the thought of not riding and that’s probably why I keep mine out of hibernation. We all know it’s a little ridiculous to ride in 10 degree weather, but it doesn’t turn that cold overnight (at least not here in Kansas). Why is it that 40 degrees in the spring feels warmer than 40 degrees in the fall? It’s the gradual change in the temperature and the constant will to ride that keeps me going, day after day, mile after mile. Or is it the price of gas… Either way, I bundle up and hope for the best. I should get paid to try out winter gear and write reviews. It would be hard for me to give up the stuff I use now because it has proven itself down to three degrees on my 22 mile commute. I don’t really want to know the wind-chill as that would probably be enough to make me park it right there. I hear stories of this “heated vest” and those “heated gloves” like they are something from the future, but I have yet to try them out. Uh yeah, I wouldn’t want to spoil myself. Ben Nighthorse Campbell trucking 2012 Capitol Christmas Tree to Washington, D.C.

  Former Colorado U.S. Sen. Ben Nighthorse Campbell, a member of the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame, is behind the wheel of a Mack truck hauling the nation's 2012 Capitol Christmas Tree from Colorado to Washington, D.C., the American Motorcyclist Association reports.  "It is a privilege to drive the tree for the U.S. Capitol from Colorado this year," said Campbell, who was inducted into the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame in 2001. Campbell, an avid motorcyclist, represented Colorado in Congress from 1993 to 2005.  Choose Outdoors, a national nonprofit coalition for outdoor recreation, is coordinating the 2012 Capitol Christmas Tree tour with the White River National Forest, where the 73-foot-tall Colorado Engleman spruce tree was harvested.  The almost-four-week-long trip began in Meeker, Colo., where the tree was harvested from the White River National Forest in the heart of the Rocky Mountains. On the way to Washington, D.C., the tree is scheduled to stop in cities and towns in Colorado, Oklahoma, Texas, Missouri, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Virginia.  The custom-decorated Mack truck used to haul the tree was fitted with a special cradle to support the tree's branches.  The AMA and AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame are urging motorcyclists along the route to greet Campbell and the tree during its journey.  The next stop is in Denver from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 11, at the Midtown Development at 6700 Pecos St. The AMA will post route updates on its Facebook page at www.facebook.com/AmericanMotorcyclist.  To learn more about the 2012 Capitol Christmas Tree tour, go to www.capitolchristmastree2012.org.

Harley-Davidson And Dav Help Wounded Veterans Move Onward

Campaign spotlights Harley’s Heroes® and DAV with two veterans’ stories   For the fourth straight year, Harley-Davidson continues its tradition of honoring United States military veterans throughout the month of November, this year by raising awareness of DAV (Disabled American Veterans) and the Harley’s Heroes program through a national video campaign spotlighting two veterans who have benefitted from the program.  Troy Torgerson of Wausau, Wis. and Nick Bernardi of Newark, N.J., both served in Iraq and sought help from the DAV upon their return home. Their videos can be viewed at www.harley-davidson.com/military.  Harley’s Heroes brings DAV mobile service offices (MSOs) to Harley-Davidson dealerships throughout the country on more than 200 days out of the year, bringing services directly to where veterans live.  DAV National Service Officers, all of whom are disabled veterans themselves, help veterans understand and apply for the benefits available, including medical treatment, disability compensation,  insurance, home loans, continued education and training, and more. Veterans get help navigating the process of applying for and securing the benefits to which they’re entitled through the VA. Last year, Harley’s Heroes helped the nation’s heroes claim tens of millions of dollars in earned benefits.  “Through these veterans’ stories, we’re hoping to inspire other veterans by showing them the positive impact DAV can have, as well as motivate them to pursue the benefits they deserve,” said Mike McCann, director of core consumer marketing at Harley-Davidson. “The services the DAV provides all across the country day in and day out are vital to helping injured veterans move onward with their lives, and we’re proud to support their efforts with the Harley’s Heroes program.”  Since 2007, Harley-Davidson has provided $2 million in grants to the DAV. Free Car Washes For Veterans & Military Personnel, Nov 11 & 12

Lucas Oil Center will provide FREE car washes to veterans and current military service personnel, through the Grace for Vets FREE Wash Program, on Sunday November 11th from 9am-5pm, and Monday November 12th from 7am-6pm 2012. Washes will be given rain or shine at 2650 N. Green River Rd.  The FREE washes are given to honor and recognize those that have and are serving in the armed forces.   The  November 11 & 12 event will feature a special display of military vehicles at the Lucas Oil Car Wash in Evansville .   Grace for Vets was founded by Mike Mountz, owner of Cloister Wash & Lube, in 2004. The program continues to grow and expand its reach of honoring military service each year as additional car washes register under the program to give FREE washes. Currently there is participation from all 50 United States, and three other countries, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.
